Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to another fabulous 5 Things Friday UK
- 0:04edition. I'm Alex, the Co host, I'm
- 0:18sorry, the Co host for five things Friday.
- 0:20I'm the founder of the Retail Podcast and I spend my time
- 0:23helping retailers and people who sell to retailers retain and
- 0:27maintain their retail thought leadership process.
- 0:32And I'm joined by my wonderful Co host, Simone Olloman.
- 0:35Hi, I'm Simone, the Co founder and CEO of Need it for Tonight,
- 0:41also known as NIFT. I always say easiest way to
- 0:44describe those is kind of like deliver route, but for quality
- 0:47fashion. So I spent a lot of my days
- 0:49working with lots of wonderful retailers helping them to
- 0:53implement 90 minute and same day delivery.
- 0:56I'm just curious, one of the things I meant to ask you last
- 0:59week in terms of the partners that you are in your ecosystem,
- 1:03they're physical retailers who then use whose products are on
- 1:09needed for tonight. Correct.
- 1:10Yes, mainly physical we have because we work with smaller
- 1:15retailers as well, but they don't have a bricks and mortar
- 1:17store. But it yeah, bricks and mortar
- 1:20stores. It tend to do fulfilment from
- 1:22the stores and actually trying to make it a bit more localised
- 1:25as well, trying to encourage people to see what's in their in
- 1:27the area and shop locally. Oh, cool.
- 1:30Fantastic. OK, without without any further
- 1:33ado, let's jump straight in this week.
- 1:37Another week full of full of interesting news, but why don't
- 1:40you start us off on this sad news?
- 1:43Yes, this one hits personally for me, creates a lot of
- 1:47nostalgia, but Top, she's coming back to the catwalk this summer
- 1:51and I've got to say they have absolutely nailed the build up
- 1:56of just their return in general. It's just the nostalgia, the
- 2:00height, even the mystery. It's giving early 2000s energy.
- 2:04And I dying to see what their new site is like.
- 2:08And I'm also dying to see what they will eventually do.
- 2:11And they do eventually turn to the High Street because let's be
- 2:14real, that Top Shop start on Oxford Circus was iconic.
- 2:18It had everything. It had photo booths, it had you
- 2:23could go get your nails done, your heads on.
- 2:25It always had a cool DJ in there.
- 2:26I mean, not for me. I would turn up and I would make
- 2:29a full day of it. And I've been there for hours.
- 2:32It wasn't just a store. It was a whole fashion landmark.
- 2:35And I guess the real question that I have is can they really
- 2:40create that cultural magic in a new era of retail?
- 2:44Because it's going to take more than just a relaunch.
- 2:48It's, you know, I guess it's a bit of a reinvention of, of what
- 2:52Top Shop means now. But on this topic, super, super,
- 2:55super fascinating because they are coming back, but they're
- 3:00kind of walking this tightrope between Gen Z and millennial
- 3:05nostalgia, You know, if they've actually been teasing even.
- 3:08Do you know the Johnny Jeans? Have you heard about the Johnny
- 3:11Jeans before? Go on, tell me a bit more about
- 3:14it maybe? Well, for example, the journey
- 3:16jeans were iconic place to buy and the journey and journey
- 3:22jeans and like they've even teased back old products like
- 3:25that. I was just curious to see if you
- 3:26left. Interestingly.
- 3:32Well, they were, they were women's jeans.
- 3:33I don't think top man did the same.
- 3:36But that's all I used to wear. But now I'm like, would I really
- 3:41go back to that? You know, have I evolved too
- 3:44much as a consumer because I'm not the same 19 year old
- 3:48building outfits in Oxford Circus changing route anymore?
- 3:53And I guess it raises the real question is are they trying to
- 3:56win over Gen Z with a new brand moment?
- 4:00Or. Are they banking on millennials
- 4:04really kind of emotionally reconnecting with the old brand
- 4:08with things like the Johnny Jeans?
- 4:09And either way, it's a smart play.
- 4:12Just quickly, they've not said that they're reopening, right?
- 4:14They're just going to come back with a cap so this could be
- 4:18stocked on this is their Rambu who owings them is it?
- 4:22Well, they're coming back with their new topshop.com.
- 4:26So, right. So actually they're going to go,
- 4:28OK, got you. Oh yeah, they're coming back.
- 4:31And you know, they've done an amazing job at the hype as well.
- 4:34They've they've really hinted at having a physical space as well.
- 4:38So they are making a real comeback.
- 4:41I don't know which way it's going to go.
- 4:43I don't know whether they're trying to target both, but I'm
- 4:46very intrigued to see how it's going to pan out.
- 4:49And I think they've done an incredible job at the hype.
- 4:52They really have. That's super interesting.
- 4:55OK. Well, listen, moving on to my
- 4:57first one, I think I can't remember last week or the week
- 5:01before I spoke about pop ups and luxury and how pop ups are sort
- 5:06of the way of connecting online brands to physical spaces.
- 5:12And here we have a homegrown AUK brand called Studio 7.
- 5:16They were born out of, I'm sorry, they were born during
- 5:19COVID. They've gone online from
- 5:21strength to strength. And now they're having their
- 5:24first ever pop up in where is a Greek St in central London.
- 5:29And it starts tomorrow. So if if you, you know this will
- 5:31go out, if you're listening to this and fancy going to see some
- 5:34cool probably will butcher what It's not athleisure.
- 5:38I don't know. Whatever you call this category,
- 5:42Simone, what would you categorise this as?
- 5:44Is it leisure wear? It's like.
- 5:48It's cutesy Ledger. I don't know what pyjamas.
- 5:53Is it loungewear? Yeah, there's loungewear.
- 5:56OK, it's loungewear. I don't know.
- 5:58I don't want to say it's loungewear and it might not.
- 6:01Yeah, what I'm like, is it also? Yeah, exactly.
- 6:04And I think, you know, and I found the story going from
- 6:07strength to strength. They're doing their first.
- 6:10I don't think they're London-based either, but they're
- 6:12doing a London-based pop up and I'm always up for supporting UK
- 6:17talent. And I if you, if you're about go
- 6:19ahead and, and, and take a visit.
- 6:21And then that's the details there will be in the show notes
- 6:23as well. Back over to you for a a battle
- 6:27of retail. Yeah.
- 6:28So something that I feel like it's just been an ongoing topic
- 6:32of conversation over the well in 2025 has really been this John
- 6:39Lewis versus M&S. There's been a lot of talk
- 6:43whether John Lewis can actually close the gap on M&S,
- 6:47especially, you know, Marks and Spencer's as we know they've had
- 6:50such a moment over the past few years.
- 6:53I myself have questioned me like, am I getting a bit older
- 6:57or is M&S getting a bit cooler? I think it's a mix of wealth,
- 7:02but M&S for me, it's been, it's really gone from like your mum's
- 7:05safe bet to something genuinely so, so fashionable, so confident
- 7:09with a real clear sense of identity as well.
- 7:12And John Lewis is making some good moves, new hires, store
- 7:16refreshes. And what I've noticed is a
- 7:19really kind of a tighter edit in fashion.
- 7:21And I've noticed recently some really great third party brands
- 7:25joining and brands that I wouldn't expect.
- 7:29Brands like Hayley Menzies, Regina Peel have an exclusive
- 7:33collab with them, Aloha's beautiful shoe brand.
- 7:36And it just feels like that they're starting to really
- 7:39sharpen their curation and maybe take more risks.
- 7:43Yeah, it will be interesting to see how that pans out.
- 7:46And I'll be honest, I haven't done much shopping at John
- 7:51Lewis. I don't really feel like I'm
- 7:54that consumer, but when they're starting to introduce brands
- 7:57like that, I'm their heads turning and they've got me
- 8:01interested. And I think they are wanting to
- 8:03attract a younger, more style conscious shopper.
- 8:07But I think as we know their core customer is being more of a
- 8:14maybe practical loyal older shopper who it's.
- 8:17It's really difficult, but I know like a few years back M&S
- 8:20bought Jaeger and a few other brands right as part they sort
- 8:24of integrated them. And I, I don't know if this
- 8:28whenever I say I shot them, I'm thinking is that doing the brand
- 8:31any just this or not? But M&S does happen to have I, I
- 8:37stop at both and, and John Lewis is always that sort of, if you
- 8:41want that, you know, branded item like they do Oogo boss,
- 8:44they do, they do Ralph Lauren, they do all these brands for
- 8:47especially for men that they are.
- 8:50And they've introduced these younger brands.
- 8:53So they 100%, I think you're absolutely right.
- 8:55They are trying to appeal to a new generation.
- 8:59And then they have the massive CEO scandal, you know, where
- 9:03they had a new scandal. She did what she did and then
- 9:06they said that's not the way we want to go, you know, like
- 9:09getting rid of the no never knowingly undersold strap line.
- 9:13And they always and the food element with Waitrose played a
- 9:17part as well. And so that had a a contentious
- 9:20element. Whereas M&S quietly has been
- 9:23transforming and whether or not it's fighting ALDI about or Lidl
- 9:28about Colin the Caterpillar, but they're basically tried to stay
- 9:33in in the headlines. And I think it's interesting
- 9:38whether or not my generation has the wallet spend or your
- 9:42generation is the future of that wallet spend and who they're
- 9:46going to. And I think they're going to try
- 9:48and go to both of us because they can't afford to alienate
- 9:51one of us. And I've seen loads of, you
- 9:54know, LinkedIn posts where middle-aged men find themselves
- 9:58going through John Lewis trying to be cool because they know
- 10:02it's a trustworthy place to start.
- 10:06Right. So that the brands that you've
- 10:07mentioned, obviously I have, oh, I dare of, but I can imagine
- 10:11that's a very sort of strategic move trying to get the caller
- 10:15shopper in there because that's where the future is for them.
- 10:19And, and I think the, the other major thing about John Lewis was
- 10:23again, three or four years ago, they said that 60% or sorry, 40%
- 10:28of their revenue will come from non retail activity such as
- 10:33being a property landlord. And I was like, wow, that's I
- 10:37have no, probably things have moved on since the departure of
- 10:41the CEO, but they, it feels like maybe they're retrenching back
- 10:44in their heritage as retail. Yeah, part as a part from trying
- 10:48to be a landlord and furniture and all the other categories
- 10:52that they sell. OK, moving on, keeping
- 10:56everything going. Beauty.
- 10:57Beauty is feels like retails growth category across the world
- 11:03and Australia seems to be churning out these big brands.
- 11:07Aesop, they've got these amazing stores in Westfield.
- 11:11They're all around the world and they're going from strength to
- 11:13strength. But there's also another pop up
- 11:16for for people who may be interested in a loose end.
- 11:19Eco by Sonia is the brand obviously huge in Australia.
- 11:24Australia. How many followers have they
- 11:26got? Three about 300,000 followers.
- 11:28But they have an interesting founder story.
- 11:31But I'll let you the listeners will readers go off and and look
- 11:35at her story. But if you are at a loose end,
- 11:38they are also running a pop up. I would go to their Oh, sorry,
- 11:41it's right here. That's the first post.
- 11:43Yeah, it's on Columbia Rd. If you're in London.
- 11:46I have a pop pop up to them, pop by to their pop up.
- 11:50I'll be editing that out of my my bit and then I will finish on
- 11:55Wimbledon. Finished last week.
- 11:57Very happy for the winner. Very disastrous for all the
- 12:00Spanish followers as Akaras didn't win but Biro did an
- 12:05activation. You might be thinking you may
- 12:07know who Biro is because you're super trendy.
- 12:10Obviously I didn't, but I saw them at Wimbledon.
- 12:12Tom Holland. Mr Spider Man Marvel Universe,
- 12:17this is his huare into the alcoholic or beverages market
- 12:23and a strong, strong association with tennis.
- 12:27Again, we talked about this on the podcast heritage activities
- 12:32such as Formula One, Wimbledon being tied into these new
- 12:37brands. And obviously Bureau is a
- 12:40alcohol free non alcoholic beer. The interesting strapline born
- 12:45in London, crafted in America, enjoyed worldwide and they offer
- 12:49a whole membership around this and I didn't know, but I was
- 12:53already a member. But they're clever.
- 12:55This is what this is a great example of how seamless the
- 13:00Shopify payment integration into a sign like Bureau allowed me
- 13:07seamlessly to sign up without even knowing that I was already
- 13:11sign in. You know, so as soon as I go in,
- 13:13it's oh, and I've got a five $5 credit off we go.
- 13:15I'm going to be having fun this weekend.
- 13:20So anything that's the my final story for this week.
- 13:23OK, They were our five things Friday.
- 13:26Thank you so much for giving up your time and joining us on this
- 13:29fast-paced 5 Things Friday UK edition.
- 13:32Simone. Until next week.
- 13:35Until next week. Thanks, Alex.
