Allan's father walked out when Allan was just three years old, leaving him and his mother, Catherine.
Catherine was one of nine siblings, brought up in the Southern States in the 1950's. She was the only one of the children who finished high school.
Allan and Catherine lived in Chicago where drugs and gangs were the norm.
Working a number of jobs over endless hours, taking qualifications whilst trying to bring up her son alone was hard for Catherine. Nothing stopped her though and she was able to put her son through school and watch him grow into the successful man he is today.
