Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: Clay Travis on Lincoln Riley’s USC Future, College Football Playoff Expansion & the SEC | Hour 2
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, you know, it was weird yesterday. The Braves and
- 0:02Speaker 1: Phillies were having to sit around. I assume they had
- 0:06Speaker 1: to wait until the end of the Red Sox-Yankees. Apparently Padres, too,
- 0:10Speaker 1: from what I've read. That the Padres could have ended
- 0:12Speaker 1: up being primetime? That's what I have read. I don't
- 0:15Speaker 1: know if that is factual, but I saw that on
- 0:16Speaker 1: social media. I know Red Sox-Yankees for sure. Yeah, I've
- 0:19Speaker 1: finished what I was saying, waiting to find out what
- 0:21Speaker 1: their start time was for today's game. They obviously want
- 0:25Speaker 1: the best game in primetime. There ends up only being one.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So I thought it was just Red Sox-Yankees. You're telling me.
- 0:30Speaker 1: They possibly were waiting on the end of the very
- 0:33Speaker 1: popular Cubs and Padres series. That's right. I think they
- 0:35Speaker 1: were going to keep the Braves early and show that
- 0:36Speaker 1: in primetime if the Cubs were able to extend that series.
- 0:40Speaker 1: But that was late night when you found out the
- 0:42Speaker 1: result of that one. So the Braves go primetime tonight.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I would imagine maybe some of them went to bed
- 0:48Speaker 1: or the coaches went to bed thinking that we're prepared
- 0:50Speaker 1: for a day game, but wake up and have a
- 0:52Speaker 1: little extra hour. So it's primetime tonight for the Braves.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Do or die, Phillies-Braves, 7 o'clock Central on NBC. The
- 1:00Speaker 1: Braves a slight betting favorite at minus 102, minus 118
- 1:05Speaker 1: for the Phillies. So that's virtually even, right?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, virtually.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Virtually a pick-em game today for the Phillies and the Braves.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Football tonight, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and then a couple of college games,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Western Kentucky, New Mexico State, and North Texas and Tulsa.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You can play those games with our friends at Hard

- 2:07Speaker 1: the story on three. You can go read his story.
- 2:09Speaker 1: He has a lot more categories, but I pulled out six.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And we're going to fill these out and answer them
- 2:14Speaker 1: as I call them. So, guys, you'll need your big
- 2:17Speaker 1: dry erase board. Brownie has set them up for us,
- 2:20Speaker 1: ready to go. Best or biggest. And you got him
- 2:24Speaker 1: a marker, Brownie?
- 2:26Speaker 2: I'll take any color.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Any color at all. All right. The best story in
- 2:31Speaker 1: college football so far. What has been the best story
- 2:35Speaker 1: in college football so far for you guys? I am
- 2:38Speaker 1: going to go with Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor. I
- 2:43Speaker 1: just think it's such a cool story that he is
- 2:47Speaker 1: a local kid. Oh, sorry, Scott. He is a local kid.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Grew up going to Mississippi State games. Loves the Bulldogs.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Wanted to play for his hometown team. Could have played
- 2:58Speaker 1: for a lot of teams, obviously, this kid. Wants to
- 3:00Speaker 1: play for his hometown team and wants to shut down
- 3:02Speaker 1: any discussion that he's not going to keep playing for
- 3:04Speaker 1: his hometown team.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Super Kamario Taylor. the best story in college football right now.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Chris Lowe said UMass being 4-0, and they're going to
- 3:12Speaker 1: sell out their stadium for the first time since Doug
- 3:16Speaker 1: Flutie came to play at UMass this weekend. The stadium
- 3:19Speaker 1: holds 17,000. Yeah, well, I mean, they had lost 16
- 3:22Speaker 1: consecutive games. Now they're 4-0, probably 5-0 after this weekend.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm going to go to the Florida Gators.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Just because this Florida brand, there is something that has
- 3:30Speaker 2: been missing, and it automatically has been infused with John Summerall,
- 3:34Speaker 2: this offense with Buster Faulkner. I think Florida has been
- 3:37Speaker 2: an incredible story and they're all the way up to
- 3:38Speaker 2: number eight. If I would have told you guys before
- 3:41Speaker 2: the season, when we hit October, Florida will be a
- 3:44Speaker 2: top 10 team. You would have said, I'm crazy.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Who has been the best coach so far in September,
- 3:50Speaker 1: in your opinion? Um, I'll go first to make it
- 3:53Speaker 1: look like Lance is not in the Gator radio network,
- 3:56Speaker 1: but I'll go John Summerall, uh, for everything Lance just said,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I'll put, um, ditto and quotation marks all around what
- 4:03Speaker 1: Lance said. John Summerall has, uh, has changed the way
- 4:07Speaker 1: I look at Florida. And I'll be honest. I'll go
- 4:09Speaker 1: ahead and say this. I've never liked the Florida Gators.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Not one time in my life. I didn't like Steve
- 4:13Speaker 1: Spurrier's Florida Gators. I hated Urban Meyer's Florida Gators. I
- 4:17Speaker 1: didn't like Galen Hall. Is that his name? No, it's
- 4:20Speaker 1: his name. I didn't like the guy before him, the
- 4:23Speaker 1: guy called Cheating with the Florida Gators. Charlie Pell? Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I never liked the Florida Gators in anything, really.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I would agree.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But I like the Florida Gators now with John Summerall.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm going to go Bob Chesney at UCLA. Again, I mean,
- 4:35Speaker 2: both of these guys, because you went Summerall, I'm going
- 4:37Speaker 2: to go Chesney. but UCLA, it's been a doormat. There
- 4:42Speaker 2: has been zero buzz around the program, and when you
- 4:44Speaker 2: watch them, they don't turn the football over. They run
- 4:47Speaker 2: at a high rate. I just think he's done a
- 4:50Speaker 2: hell of a job at least four games in.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And let me tell you, I had no emotions for
- 4:54Speaker 1: Bob Chesney, and I'm a, of that rivalry, UCLA-USC, I'm
- 4:58Speaker 1: a UCLA guy, but he's done nothing yet that has
- 5:02Speaker 1: sort of moved the meter for me until the story
- 5:05Speaker 1: that Dan Lanning told, and Brown, you've heard this too,
- 5:08Speaker 1: so Do you want to tell the story? Well, here
- 5:09Speaker 1: we go, because I'm also going Bob Chesney. And this
- 5:12Speaker 1: was such a cool thing Chesney did. You thought that
- 5:14Speaker 1: tractor was sexy at James Madison. Look how sexy it
- 5:17Speaker 1: is at UCLA. That's the other Chesney. I did walk
- 5:19Speaker 1: in and say, Lance, did you see what Chesney did?
- 5:21Speaker 1: And he goes, Kenny?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Kenny?
- 5:24Speaker 1: So Bob Chesney apparently calls Dan Lanning Saturday night. Now,
- 5:29Speaker 1: keep in mind, UCLA had to fly halfway around the
- 5:33Speaker 1: globe to play a Big Ten game. They're on their
- 5:35Speaker 1: way back from College Park, Maryland. And he calls Dan Lanning, says, hey,
- 5:40Speaker 1: I just saw what happened to Dante and I know
- 5:42Speaker 1: he's got to stay back. And you guys are going
- 5:45Speaker 1: back to Eugene. If there's anything I can do to help,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you just let me know. If I need to go
- 5:49Speaker 1: see him, if I need to accommodate his family, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: if there's anything I can do to help, you just
- 5:54Speaker 1: let me know. And Lanning was sincerely moved by it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He was like, man, that. This guy is coaching his
- 6:00Speaker 1: own season. He's got a team full of players to
- 6:02Speaker 1: worry about, and he's worried about one of mine.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, for Lanning to actually come out with that and
- 6:06Speaker 2: not to be leaked, you would think that it was
- 6:09Speaker 2: a little manufactured on UCLA and Bob Chesney's part, but
- 6:13Speaker 2: for that to actually come from Dan Lanning, it means
- 6:16Speaker 2: a lot more.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Best game in September. I mean, I almost put Florida
- 6:22Speaker 1: Ole Miss because I thought that was an entertaining game
- 6:24Speaker 1: last week, but I'm going to go Ole Miss-LSU. That's
- 6:27Speaker 1: I mean, that was such a good football game in
- 6:29Speaker 1: that atmosphere. It's hard not to.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I don't know what our final three categories are, so
- 6:33Speaker 2: I might be jumping the script on mine, but I'm
- 6:35Speaker 2: going Oak State 39, Oregon 31. I thought that was
- 6:38Speaker 2: such a fun game based on the fact that Oak
- 6:40Speaker 2: State virtually threw two pick sixes, one for a pick six,
- 6:44Speaker 2: the other first and goal at the two, gave them
- 6:47Speaker 2: 14 points. But Drew Mestemaker continued to make play after
- 6:51Speaker 2: play after play. And there was drama for the full
- 6:53Speaker 2: 60 minutes.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And it was a huge upset. Yeah, I'm going to
- 6:56Speaker 1: go Ole Miss-Louisville. That was just such a fun game
- 6:58Speaker 1: that first weekend of football. We did not get a
- 7:01Speaker 1: lot of great games the first weekend of football, so
- 7:03Speaker 1: it was just tasteful. Made it a little better. The
- 7:10Speaker 1: best win so far in college football, in your opinion.
- 7:14Speaker 1: The best win so far, in your opinion, in college football.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Um.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Look, I'm just going to steal one lance just at
- 7:23Speaker 1: Oklahoma State beating Oregon. I mean, when you think back
- 7:27Speaker 1: on it, honestly, Oklahoma State losing to Tulsa and turning
- 7:31Speaker 1: around and beating Oregon is probably the most shocking. I
- 7:35Speaker 1: could never have sold you on that in the offseason.
- 7:37Speaker 1: You could not. Not a minute. Hell, I couldn't have
- 7:40Speaker 1: sold you on them beating Tulsa and then beating Oregon.
- 7:43Speaker 1: If they would.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Have beat Tulsa like they would beat them right now
- 7:45Speaker 2: by 21... That number is probably Oregon 19 instead of 24.5,
- 7:50Speaker 2: and it still is an impossibility. I'm going to go
- 7:54Speaker 2: Texas over Ohio State. Very, very obvious, but such a
- 7:58Speaker 2: big matchup in the fourth quarter comeback. You talk about drama.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Everything had to go right for Texas in that fourth quarter.
- 8:06Speaker 2: It's the only really good quarter we've seen Arch play in,
- 8:09Speaker 2: but that was a hell of a win.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I'm going to go Florida over Ole Miss. That was
- 8:13Speaker 1: an entertaining game, and I think it has now set
- 8:16Speaker 1: the table on what Florida could be. Ole Miss was
- 8:19Speaker 1: up to number four. Trinidad was trending to win the Heisman.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And a Florida win sort of flipped the script, not
- 8:26Speaker 1: only in the SEC, but I think nationally on what
- 8:28Speaker 1: the Gators could be this year. So Florida over Ole
- 8:31Speaker 1: Miss for me. The biggest surprise so far in college football.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Like player, coach, anything? It could be player, team, coach, anything.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And some of it's a little duplication earlier, but. The
- 8:42Speaker 1: biggest surprise, and the other one so you can be
- 8:44Speaker 1: thinking ahead, is the biggest disappointment so far in college football.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I'm going to write this down because I'm not going
- 8:49Speaker 2: to be able to do it again this year. But
- 8:53Speaker 2: for me.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Well, I'm having a tough time on this one, honestly.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I'm going to go Kentucky. I mean, Kentucky to be
- 9:00Speaker 2: ranked Will Stein's first year and sitting at 3-1, I'm
- 9:03Speaker 2: going to take Kentucky on that.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I liked the way you said you couldn't do it anymore.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They're about to fall out.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Well, they're about to lose.
- 9:11Speaker 1: They are.
- 9:14Speaker 2: So this will be the only time I can do Kentucky.
- 9:16Speaker 2: But you think about the offense. The offense for Kentucky
- 9:19Speaker 2: has been really, really good. I mean, 567 yards coming
- 9:24Speaker 2: off that performance, their most since 2021 in any game.
- 9:28Speaker 2: So it's a fun product.
- 9:30Speaker 1: To watch, finally.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Brown, you still thinking?
- 9:33Speaker 4: I am.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Biggest surprise? Biggest surprise to me so far has been
- 9:38Speaker 1: just how Texas Tech has not looked better than they've
- 9:43Speaker 1: looked so far. And I thought BYU would win that league,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but I'm not sure if Texas Tech finishes even in
- 9:51Speaker 1: the Big 12 championship.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Now, you know they're still undefeated at four.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Oh, I do. But that's why it's been a surprise
- 9:56Speaker 1: to me that they have not looked better than they've looked. I...
- 10:00Speaker 1: honest to goodness, think that we could play a Big
- 10:02Speaker 1: 12 championship game without the highest paid roster in the
- 10:06Speaker 1: Big 12. That's a surprise to me. I thought they
- 10:08Speaker 1: were a given. You know, I want to say Western
- 10:12Speaker 1: Michigan here, but they got drilled by Boise. But the
- 10:15Speaker 1: fact that they were ever on the stage was a
- 10:17Speaker 1: huge surprise. I know they've got two losses. One of
- 10:20Speaker 1: those has an asterisk, though. You've got to grant me that.
- 10:25Speaker 1: That's a tough one on me, man. I'm going to go. Jim,
- 10:28Speaker 1: there have been no surprises for me this college football season.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It's hard to surprise him. It's like trying to buy
- 10:33Speaker 1: a gift for your Christmas. You've got everything. Yeah, I've
- 10:34Speaker 1: got everything I need. But I do know my biggest disappointment.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I can go negative if you want me to. Go
- 10:38Speaker 1: biggest disappointment. Yeah, it's going to be, for me, and
- 10:42Speaker 1: it's not a surprise, Gary Patterson. Now, the reason I
- 10:44Speaker 1: say it's not a surprise, I respect his coaching, but
- 10:46Speaker 1: it's not a surprise that Lincoln Riley has gone out
- 10:49Speaker 1: and hired a big-name defensive coordinator that's got a great pedigree,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and it's supposed to finally fix their defense, and it
- 10:54Speaker 1: has not worked. That has been a huge disappointment. Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Well, for me, I'm going to go Oklahoma. You guys
- 11:00Speaker 2: know this. I mean, over their last three games, they've
- 11:02Speaker 2: scored 27 total points. They're two and two. I thought
- 11:06Speaker 2: they would lose to Michigan. I thought they'd be competitive
- 11:08Speaker 2: against Georgia. They weren't. Now, I will say after I
- 11:11Speaker 2: put this up, they're about to win their next four.
- 11:13Speaker 2: So they're going to be six and two. before they
- 11:16Speaker 2: go to Florida because they're going to beat Texas. They're
- 11:18Speaker 2: going to beat Kentucky. They're going to go into state and.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Beat Mississippi State. I thought you gave up on John Mateer.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I don't think the season is going
- 11:24Speaker 2: to be nearly what I thought it was. But coming
- 11:26Speaker 2: off this bye, I think they'll go on a little roll.
- 11:28Speaker 2: They'll end up still– they'll still lose four games. Eight
- 11:31Speaker 2: and four, very, very disappointing year coming off. Double-digit win
- 11:35Speaker 2: hosting a playoff game last year.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I just picked one because I thought you– it shows
- 11:39Speaker 1: you where the media is. So many more negatives than
- 11:41Speaker 1: there are positives. No, it was so much easier for
- 11:42Speaker 1: me to find the disappointment. Like, I had Michigan last year.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Like to his Oklahoma, I had Michigan. There you go.
- 11:47Speaker 1: And Texas A & M are disappointed. I had to
- 11:50Speaker 1: pick Gary Patterson over all those. What was your expectation
- 11:53Speaker 1: for Michigan, though? I thought they'd be a playoff team.
- 11:56Speaker 1: They've lost two games. I know the record says one,
- 11:59Speaker 1: but they lost that. I don't know if I thought
- 12:00Speaker 1: they'd be a playoff team. I thought they would look
- 12:02Speaker 1: better than this under him. They just haven't looked.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I know.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Their only quality win is against the team that you
- 12:09Speaker 1: have as your biggest disappointment.
- 12:10Speaker 2: But this played out. The win against Western Michigan was
- 12:14Speaker 2: complete horseshit, but the loss against Iowa was complete horseshit.
- 12:18Speaker 1: That's true. Don't lie.
- 12:19Speaker 2: They are 3-1, and we'll see if they get better.
- 12:22Speaker 2: This is a big game. I can't believe I'm saying this.
- 12:24Speaker 2: They haven't lost on the road since 1987 to Minnesota,
- 12:27Speaker 2: but this is a big game against Minnesota.
- 12:28Speaker 1: That was in the Metrodome last time they lost to Minnesota.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Fleck is 0-4 in the battle for the Little Brown Jug,
- 12:34Speaker 1: which we don't play every year anymore. Oh, was that
- 12:36Speaker 1: a we lost the Little Brown Jug to expansion? Conferences
- 12:39Speaker 1: get so big.
- 12:40Speaker 2: It does not affect me at all. I was more
- 12:42Speaker 2: upset when Taco Bell put the Mexican pizza off the
- 12:45Speaker 2: menu when Superior Grill shut down. But now we know that.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Now the Brown Juggers. It comes in threes, they say.
- 12:50Speaker 1: From Chris Lowe on three, best story, UMass. Best team,
- 12:54Speaker 1: he had that category, Georgia. Best player, he had that category.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And I can't read my own Mensa, Darian Mensa. Best coach,
- 13:03Speaker 1: he went John Summerall. Best game, Ole Miss, LSU. Best win,
- 13:06Speaker 1: he had Texas over Ohio State. Biggest surprise, he had
- 13:09Speaker 1: UCLA so far. And biggest disappointment, he had Texas A & M.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Let's get to our buddy Clay Travis right now, brought

- 14:07Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw the segment to start
- 14:09Speaker 1: our show today, but we debuted episode one of the
- 14:12Speaker 1: Righteous Gemstones Locks. And I like the Phillies today over
- 14:17Speaker 1: the Braves. I don't know about you, how you're going
- 14:19Speaker 1: to play that at Hard Rock Bet.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Uh, I'm going to play it on the Braves, uh,
- 14:24Speaker 5: because I have a soul, uh, but, uh, that was
- 14:30Speaker 5: a tough one yesterday. Uh, the Travis boys, all three
- 14:33Speaker 5: of my kids are big Braves fans too. Uh, we
- 14:36Speaker 5: took that one on the chin back-to-back pitches for home runs, uh,
- 14:40Speaker 5: pretty tough for Dylan Lee.
- 14:42Speaker 6: I would think to get out of bed this morning.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Uh, it's not the relief appearance you were hoping for
- 14:46Speaker 5: when you come in with a three, one lead in
- 14:48Speaker 5: the top of the eighth, only need six outs, uh,
- 14:51Speaker 5: and you'd let back-to-back.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Dingers go yard.
- 14:55Speaker 5: I will say, I don't know if you guys have
- 14:56Speaker 5: seen the Bryce Harper response after he blew it in
- 15:01Speaker 5: right field, had the ball that he misplayed go over
- 15:03Speaker 5: his head to allow the Braves to take the lead
- 15:05Speaker 5: like they did. And if you haven't, it's worth watching
- 15:09Speaker 5: because I think it's a good illustration of probably the
- 15:13Speaker 5: most important lesson we've learned in sports, which is everybody fails.
- 15:18Speaker 6: And it's hard to fail.
- 15:19Speaker 5: The bigger the stage you're on, the tougher it is
- 15:22Speaker 5: to fail because so many more.
- 15:23Speaker 6: People see you.
- 15:25Speaker 5: But the way that you respond to it is the,
- 15:28Speaker 5: I think, ultimate lesson. of sports that transcends, uh, long
- 15:32Speaker 5: after most of our playing careers are over. Um, and, uh,
- 15:37Speaker 5: I thought it was really well said, even though I
- 15:38Speaker 5: hope the Braves beat the Phillies brains out later today.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Uh, not bad, uh, by Bryce Harper.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I feel like a, uh, an important lesson in life.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I tell my daughter plays soccer clay and, uh, she
- 15:48Speaker 1: had a soccer game last night. Scoreless tie is going
- 15:50Speaker 1: to shock you last night. Was she in the gold?
- 15:52Speaker 1: She's not. the goalie no she does not play goalie
- 15:54Speaker 1: more she plays striker now so anybody flop any red
- 15:56Speaker 1: cards I mean they outplayed the other team but it
- 15:59Speaker 1: was a scoreless tie that other team had a great
- 16:00Speaker 1: goalie but I tell her all the time you're going
- 16:02Speaker 1: to make mistakes all we expect of you is to
- 16:05Speaker 1: make them at full speed as long as you make
- 16:07Speaker 1: mistakes at full speed I can I love that I
- 16:09Speaker 1: can live with any mistake you make at full speed.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I love that um you know um and uh Again,
- 16:17Speaker 5: sports are important in that way for youth, I think,
- 16:20Speaker 5: because you can learn life lessons in a relatively protected environment, right?
- 16:26Speaker 5: And you hope that they're going to be applied in
- 16:28Speaker 5: a significant way in the years ahead. So I thought
- 16:33Speaker 5: that Bryce Harper statement was a good one. I'm excited
- 16:36Speaker 5: to watch the Braves-Phillies tonight. It's an obviously huge game.
- 16:42Speaker 6: And we will see.
- 16:43Speaker 5: 164 games played, and it all comes down to this
- 16:46Speaker 5: to see whose season gets to continue.
- 16:50Speaker 6: We'll be watching.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Okay, so we switch to college football. Speaking of failures,
- 16:54Speaker 2: big one in the Coliseum on Saturday night with Lincoln Riley,
- 16:57Speaker 2: USC up 7-3. Dante Moore goes out. Raiola takes over.
- 17:02Speaker 2: They lose by 14. When you look at this five-year
- 17:05Speaker 2: window for Lincoln Riley, 11 wins in year one. Caleb
- 17:08Speaker 2: Williams wins. a Heisman Trophy since then. Eight wins, seven wins,
- 17:12Speaker 2: nine wins, probably eight wins this year is what I'm projecting.
- 17:15Speaker 2: If you're Jen Cohen, a really well-respected AD at USC,
- 17:19Speaker 2: you've got a $ 70 million buyout. Let's say that you're
- 17:23Speaker 2: the athletic director. What do you do now with Lincoln Riley?
- 17:25Speaker 2: Five years is a massive sample size in today's college football.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I think the question becomes it's a financial decision because
- 17:33Speaker 5: I think you know that he hasn't performed at a
- 17:36Speaker 5: level that would make you believe that he's going to
- 17:39Speaker 5: win championships there.
- 17:41Speaker 6: And so then it becomes a financial question, right?
- 17:44Speaker 5: Because the reason coaches want big buyouts like this is
- 17:48Speaker 5: so they don't end up getting fired on the tarmac
- 17:51Speaker 5: like Lane Kiffin did. And if they're going to get fired,
- 17:54Speaker 5: that they're going to get that generational payout. So A
- 17:58Speaker 5: lot of times we don't know the particulars. Is there
- 18:01Speaker 5: offset language in that contract? In other words, if he
- 18:04Speaker 5: gets another job, how much of that do you end
- 18:06Speaker 5: up having to pay? How much of it is due
- 18:08Speaker 5: up front immediately? I mean, honestly, that to me is
- 18:13Speaker 5: what I would be looking at if I were the
- 18:15Speaker 5: athletic director at USC.
- 18:17Speaker 6: I would know.
- 18:19Speaker 5: That Lincoln Riley is not the right choice and that
- 18:22Speaker 5: he's unlikely to win championships, and that's what we're paying
- 18:25Speaker 5: him to do. And then it would move into, OK,
- 18:28Speaker 5: what are the financial requirements? Is there some monster donor
- 18:32Speaker 5: out there, right, that is worth seven, eight, nine billion
- 18:35Speaker 5: dollars that can stroke a check to to pay that
- 18:38Speaker 5: buyout to help you out? Because you're probably going to
- 18:41Speaker 5: have to pay in addition to that 70 million dollar buyout,
- 18:44Speaker 5: all the terms associated with it. You know, you're going
- 18:47Speaker 5: to have to pay somebody eight, nine, 10 million dollars
- 18:49Speaker 5: probably to come in and take over that job. So
- 18:52Speaker 5: it's really, to me, when you look at it, it's
- 18:54Speaker 5: more akin to a $ 150 million decision than it even
- 18:59Speaker 5: is a $ 70 million decision, right? And then you get
- 19:02Speaker 5: into some of you have renovated houses. Some of you
- 19:05Speaker 5: have had stocks that went down. You get into the
- 19:08Speaker 5: sunk cost fallacy where you look at all the money
- 19:11Speaker 5: that you've spent and all the money you're going to
- 19:13Speaker 5: continue to spend. And you may make decisions that are
- 19:16Speaker 5: not in the best interest of you because you're continuing
- 19:19Speaker 5: to make the same bad decision that you made before.
- 19:22Speaker 1: That is very interesting. It's ironic. It's funny that the
- 19:28Speaker 1: AD at USC also is the AD that hired Kalen
- 19:31Speaker 1: DeBoer at Washington. So if you were interested in a
- 19:35Speaker 1: guy like Kalen DeBoer, there's a huge buyout. I believe
- 19:37Speaker 1: they'd have to pay Alabama, too. So that price keeps
- 19:40Speaker 1: going up.
- 19:41Speaker 5: So you add another layer of complexity associated with the decision.
- 19:44Speaker 5: I just think at a minimum, it's probably a $ 150
- 19:47Speaker 5: million decision, and it could extend. all the way up
- 19:50Speaker 5: to $ 200 million.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Or USC and Alabama could just switch coaches.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Alabama fans will love that. Hey, Front Office Sports this morning,
- 19:59Speaker 1: I believe these numbers, I want your opinion, I believe
- 20:02Speaker 1: these numbers are going to show that people are only
- 20:05Speaker 1: watching the big brands now in college football, but they
- 20:07Speaker 1: reported college football viewership is down 11% through September compared
- 20:12Speaker 1: to last season. But I feel like the numbers are
- 20:16Speaker 1: up for the brands. I think this is just bad
- 20:18Speaker 1: for the teams around the edges. I think you're 100% right.
- 20:23Speaker 6: And this is my big thesis on media in general.
- 20:27Speaker 5: What you're seeing in an attention economy, and I had
- 20:30Speaker 5: mentioned this to you guys before, but it's one of
- 20:32Speaker 5: my favorite quotes. Reed Hastings says, we're not competing with others.
- 20:36Speaker 5: We're competing with sleep. We have never had more media opportunities, availabilities,
- 20:42Speaker 5: every movie under the sun available instantaneously. Netflix, brand new
- 20:48Speaker 5: top 10 every day. There's always something new out there.
- 20:52Speaker 5: What typically happens is the biggest brands get bigger.
- 20:57Speaker 6: Everybody else suffers.
- 20:59Speaker 5: And I think what you're seeing is Greg Sankey's decision
- 21:03Speaker 5: to expand and add Texas and Oklahoma and also A &
- 21:06Speaker 5: M and Missouri compared to the Big Ten's decision to
- 21:11Speaker 5: add Maryland, Rutgers. That created an overall strengthening of the
- 21:18Speaker 5: SEC brand.
- 21:19Speaker 6: And then, guys, everybody bullied the SEC. to go to
- 21:22Speaker 6: nine conference games.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Oh, you've got to go to nine. Oh, you've got
- 21:26Speaker 5: to go to nine. And finally, the SEC said, okay.
- 21:29Speaker 5: And what it actually did was it kneecapped the Big 12,
- 21:33Speaker 5: the ACC, everybody else. Because it took, first of all,
- 21:37Speaker 5: a lot of the ACC games against the SEC away.
- 21:40Speaker 5: You heard Dabo talking about that with Clemson. But it
- 21:43Speaker 5: then has created so much big brand conflict. I mean,
- 21:47Speaker 5: Texas-Tennessee conflict. was the most watched noon kickoff game in
- 21:51Speaker 5: 10 years for ESPN. That nearly 10 million people, it's
- 21:55Speaker 5: the most watched game of the day. Now, you can argue, well,
- 21:57Speaker 5: that's why it never should have been on at noon.
- 22:00Speaker 5: But then you combine it with, I watched all day.
- 22:03Speaker 5: I closed it out with Mississippi State Mizzou at midnight
- 22:06Speaker 5: on the East Coast up in Knoxville. And I think
- 22:10Speaker 5: the beneficiary is going to be the SEC. I think
- 22:13Speaker 5: the Big Ten at the top of the Big Ten
- 22:15Speaker 5: will also benefit. But I think what you're seeing is
- 22:19Speaker 5: a flight to brand. And on the margins, the smaller
- 22:24Speaker 5: things suffer. And I think that's true across all of entertainment.
- 22:28Speaker 5: And I think you're seeing it in sports in a
- 22:29Speaker 5: big way.
- 22:31Speaker 1: And college football will regret their scheduling philosophy if they
- 22:34Speaker 1: don't fix it. They've got time to fix this problem.
- 22:37Speaker 1: But they have created this situation, Dunaway, by this horrible
- 22:40Speaker 1: scheduling that we've had the first three weeks. This has
- 22:42Speaker 1: been the worst scheduled, and I've watched it all, but
- 22:45Speaker 1: the worst scheduled first three weeks we've ever seen. You're
- 22:47Speaker 1: fixed to this, in my opinion. Every conference plays the
- 22:50Speaker 1: same amount of conference games, Clay. So now every conference
- 22:54Speaker 1: has the same amount of non-conference games, and you play
- 22:56Speaker 1: them all at the start of the season, and you
- 22:58Speaker 1: allow the networks to schedule those games. So Fox gets
- 23:01Speaker 1: first pick, and Fox says, we want Ohio State-Alabama. Great
- 23:05Speaker 1: ESPN is your pick. Alabama's back on the board, but
- 23:07Speaker 1: they've got to play a home game. You can't put
- 23:08Speaker 1: them on the road because they're having to go to
- 23:10Speaker 1: Ohio State. You could fix this in a heartbeat if
- 23:12Speaker 1: you let the networks do your out-of-conference schedules.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Really, what you're speaking of, too, is the NFL doesn't
- 23:20Speaker 5: do this. They set their best games in their biggest windows.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I think what you will see in the years ahead
- 23:28Speaker 5: is the SEC and the Big Ten are going to
- 23:29Speaker 5: do a challenge. And I think it will be wildly popular.
- 23:33Speaker 5: But basically what you're creating is the SEC and the
- 23:39Speaker 5: Big Ten to a certain extent, you know, the six
- 23:42Speaker 5: or seven brands at the absolute top of the Big
- 23:44Speaker 5: Ten are going to be playing a different sport than
- 23:47Speaker 5: everybody else. And typically what follows viewership is money. And
- 23:53Speaker 5: so I suspect that what you're seeing is the SEC
- 23:57Speaker 5: starting to distance itself from everyone else. because the culture
- 24:02Speaker 5: of the conference is supreme across all areas, right? You know,
- 24:08Speaker 5: it's harder to get into Vanderbilt now than it is
- 24:10Speaker 5: Columbia and Yale.
- 24:11Speaker 6: You guys know this. I mean, Nick.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Saban made people who are growing up in L.A. and
- 24:17Speaker 5: New York City want to go to Alabama for college.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Twenty years ago, your mom would have strangled you if
- 24:23Speaker 5: you were in Westchester and you said, hey, I want
- 24:26Speaker 5: to go to Bama, dad or mom. Same thing would
- 24:30Speaker 5: have happened if you're in Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach
- 24:34Speaker 5: out in the L.A.
- 24:35Speaker 6: Area. Mom and dad are sitting around. They're like, there's
- 24:37Speaker 6: no way you're going to Alabama.
- 24:39Speaker 5: That's how much the brand has grown and skyrocketed, and
- 24:43Speaker 5: I think it's translating across all fronts right now.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You mentioned Texas, Tennessee. You were in Neyland for that game.
- 24:49Speaker 2: After watching Texas in person, Arch Manning, very, very pedestrian
- 24:54Speaker 2: once again. Do you think this offense is finally going
- 24:58Speaker 2: to come together at some point, and is Arch good
- 25:01Speaker 2: enough to win a national championship?
- 25:06Speaker 5: That game, to me, I think will be an interesting
- 25:10Speaker 5: test going forward. Whatever Texas ended up with 10 sacks,
- 25:15Speaker 5: I thought that Faison Brandon looked like what he was,
- 25:18Speaker 5: a true freshman quarterback, which we don't see very often
- 25:21Speaker 5: in major college football, that was overwhelmed by what he
- 25:24Speaker 5: was seeing in front of him. Tennessee's defense was way
- 25:28Speaker 5: better against Texas than I thought they would be. And
- 25:30Speaker 5: I thought they would be pretty good. If you had
- 25:32Speaker 5: told me Texas is only going to score 20 points,
- 25:35Speaker 5: I would have bet a lot of money that Tennessee
- 25:37Speaker 5: would have won that game. So I think the question
- 25:40Speaker 5: that comes out of that game to me on both
- 25:42Speaker 5: fronts is just how good is the Texas defense?
- 25:46Speaker 6: Just how good is the Tennessee defense?
- 25:48Speaker 5: If both defenses are going to be top 10, 15
- 25:51Speaker 5: caliber in the nation, then I think that you will
- 25:54Speaker 5: start to see Arch put up big numbers later in
- 25:57Speaker 5: the season. I mean, I think we know Ohio State's
- 25:59Speaker 5: pretty good and that they're not showing a lot of
- 26:02Speaker 5: wrinkles with other teams. What I saw the way Arch
- 26:05Speaker 5: finished the season last year, he certainly was good enough
- 26:08Speaker 5: to win a national championship. What we have seen so
- 26:11Speaker 5: far on the road against Tennessee and against Ohio State,
- 26:14Speaker 5: he's shown flashes. I tend to think that those are
- 26:17Speaker 5: two of the toughest games that Texas will have. And
- 26:21Speaker 5: so I really kind of want to see what.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Happens as we move into October and November.
- 26:24Speaker 5: I think your answer is to be determined more so
- 26:28Speaker 5: than anything else.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Sometimes I think good business decisions are forced upon you
- 26:33Speaker 1: or they happen by happenstance. Last week, because of President
- 26:38Speaker 1: Trump being in Knoxville, they opened the gates an hour
- 26:41Speaker 1: early at Neyland and took 50 percent off of all
- 26:44Speaker 1: alcohol sales. and Danny White comes out now and he says, hey,
- 26:48Speaker 1: we're going to keep that going. Happy hour, open three
- 26:51Speaker 1: hours instead of two hours before kickoff, 50% all alcohol
- 26:55Speaker 1: sales starting this weekend for the Auburn game. It's going
- 26:57Speaker 1: to be the policy moving forward at Neyland. Sounds like
- 27:00Speaker 1: a moneymaker to me.
- 27:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it will be.
- 27:04Speaker 5: I think also not only is it a smart moneymaker,
- 27:07Speaker 5: I haven't heard a lot of people talk about this,
- 27:09Speaker 5: it also makes getting in the stadium way easier. Because
- 27:12Speaker 5: what it does, let's say that there's only 15,000 people
- 27:15Speaker 5: that decide to go in early. The 15,000 that do
- 27:19Speaker 5: decide to go in early make it way easier for
- 27:21Speaker 5: the crush that you're going to get come closer to
- 27:24Speaker 5: game time. I got in an hour before that game,
- 27:27Speaker 5: right after big noon, and I waited 30 seconds to
- 27:31Speaker 5: get into Neyland Stadium. So I suspect they looked at
- 27:35Speaker 5: the flow of traffic and said, hey, we don't know
- 27:37Speaker 5: how many people we're going to get. But happy hour
- 27:40Speaker 5: in the stadium is a great revenue producer, but it
- 27:43Speaker 5: also makes it far easier to get everybody into the
- 27:49Speaker 5: actual stadium. So I see it kind of as a no-brainer.
- 27:53Speaker 1: All right, Clay on his way to do Fox News.
- 27:54Speaker 1: And then Clay and Buck follow us here on Sport
- 27:58Speaker 1: and State coming up at the top of the hour,
- 28:00Speaker 1: about half an hour from right now. Clay, have a
- 28:02Speaker 1: great weekend. We always appreciate the time.
- 28:05Speaker 6: My blood bank guarantee for Hard Rock Bet, by the way.
- 28:08Speaker 5: I think Nebraska is going to obliterate Maryland feels to
- 28:12Speaker 5: me like Maryland has quit. It's at Nebraska minus 14
- 28:16Speaker 5: and a half right now. It was yesterday. I haven't
- 28:19Speaker 5: seen if the line has moved anymore. Um, But the
- 28:22Speaker 5: guys at Hard Rock Bet have got us hooked up there.
- 28:24Speaker 5: So they're going to give a bonus for everybody who
- 28:27Speaker 5: takes it.
- 28:28Speaker 1: You're all welcome.
- 28:29Speaker 6: Get rich, kids.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Unfortunately, Righteous Gemstone Locks was on Maryland. Did you have Maryland?
- 28:35Speaker 2: I would not touch Maryland.
- 28:37Speaker 5: I do love the Righteous Gemstones television show.
- 28:41Speaker 6: So I do like the Righteous Gemstones Lock. It is
- 28:43Speaker 6: a really elite program. Very funny. Have you guys seen
- 28:48Speaker 6: the Vice Principals?
- 28:50Speaker 2: I've seen two episodes, yeah, because it's with Walton Goggins
- 28:53Speaker 2: and Danny McBride. It was pretty funny.
- 28:56Speaker 1: It is so good. I love Walton Goggins. Yeah, Walton Goggins.
- 29:00Speaker 1: I love him. Played one of my favorite characters of
- 29:02Speaker 1: all time in Justified.
- 29:05Speaker 6: He is amazing. And that Vice Principals is really, really
- 29:08Speaker 6: funny and well done.
- 29:09Speaker 1: You would enjoy it. All right. See you, Clay. Thank you.
- 29:12Speaker 1: All right. See you guys. Travis, the founder of Sporting State,
- 29:15Speaker 1: with us on the show. The next round presented by
- 29:18Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet right here on Sporting State. We continue
- 29:20Speaker 1: on after a quick timeout. Back with you on the
- 29:25Speaker 1: next round presented by Hard Rock Bet on Sport and
- 29:27Speaker 1: State as we roll on. More college football to get
- 29:30Speaker 1: to as soon as Brownie tells us about the folks
- 29:32Speaker 1: at XXXY. So Jennifer Say, a national champion gymnast, went
- 29:36Speaker 1: on uh in the merchandise industry to become brand president
- 29:40Speaker 1: there at levi's but she left that job rather than
- 29:44Speaker 1: say something she simply did not believe in and she
- 29:47Speaker 1: launched her own brand xxxy athletics it is the t
- 29:52Speaker 1: that launched a movement their mission in their own words

- 30:38Speaker 1: only half joking, but I really do like Maryland to
- 30:43Speaker 1: cover in that game, guys. one reason, I mean, did
- 30:47Speaker 1: you see the injury report? I believe Nebraska is going
- 30:50Speaker 1: to be without Jamal Rule running back in that game.
- 30:52Speaker 1: That's a big impact.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Well, I just, I don't know if they've quit.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I think Nebraska's with Michael Oxley, which seems like a
- 30:59Speaker 1: big impact.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to say that a team has quit
- 31:02Speaker 2: with Maryland being 2-2 through four games, but the way
- 31:06Speaker 2: they played against UCLA, and I was an idiot. I
- 31:10Speaker 2: backed them against Virginia Tech in that nine-point loss, and
- 31:12Speaker 2: then I had them in the 51-point loss last week.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I will not touch Maryland again this year.
- 31:17Speaker 1: At least you didn't have to watch the whole thing.
- 31:18Speaker 1: You knew that was over in a hurry.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I just thought Malik Washington was going to have a
- 31:20Speaker 2: really good year, and it just hasn't really worked out
- 31:23Speaker 2: like that.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I mean, if you guys will promise to not steal
- 31:26Speaker 1: the Brown Bandits' plays two weeks in advance, hear me straight.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Nebraska beats Indiana next week. That's the time you want
- 31:35Speaker 1: to be all over Nebraska is next week. What's going
- 31:37Speaker 1: to be Brown Bandits' point spread in that one? What's
- 31:39Speaker 1: it going to need to cover?
- 31:41Speaker 2: Where is that game?
- 31:42Speaker 1: That is in Lincoln, Lance.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Indiana at Nebraska.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Indiana at Nebraska.
- 31:46Speaker 2: If Nebraska covers this week, I will say that Indiana
- 31:51Speaker 2: is an 8.5 to 10-point favorite.
- 31:54Speaker 1: That low? That's all? Nebraska. Nebraska next week, Jim. Don't
- 32:01Speaker 1: touch this game this week. What if they're coming off
- 32:03Speaker 1: a loss to Maryland, though? I don't think Maryland wins
- 32:06Speaker 1: the game.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's going to be difficult. Calandria's played well, though.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I actually think that's why Maryland might not be a
- 32:12Speaker 1: bad place because Indiana looms next week. And Matt Rule
- 32:16Speaker 1: probably put in the UCLA Maryland tape and said, guys,
- 32:20Speaker 1: let's move on to Indiana. I don't even think we
- 32:22Speaker 1: have to watch this one. Hey, by the way, you
- 32:23Speaker 1: mentioned Calandria, the quarterback for Nebraska. The folks at Pro
- 32:26Speaker 1: Football Focus ranking through four games the best quarterbacks in
- 32:31Speaker 1: college football. Darian Mensah with their rating system is one.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Julian Sayen, two. Calandria, number three in the country so far.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Keelan Russell is fourth.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Well, it's good Coandrea's playing at that level because you
- 32:43Speaker 2: know Nebraska fans would be like, how in the hell
- 32:46Speaker 2: did Dylan Raiola get out of here the way he
- 32:48Speaker 2: played last week?
- 32:48Speaker 1: I thought about that when he came in, and Nebraska's undefeated,
- 32:52Speaker 1: but I thought about that the minute he came in
- 32:54Speaker 1: and played the way he did against Oregon. I was like, boy,
- 32:56Speaker 1: I bet Matt Rule's going to hear about this in Lincoln. Hey,
- 32:59Speaker 1: and another reason why that North Carolina hosting Notre Dame
- 33:03Speaker 1: game could be interesting, C.J. Carr is fifth in that,
- 33:06Speaker 1: but they're putting a lot of pressure on him to
- 33:08Speaker 1: throw the football. Can Bill Belichick confuse... C.J. Carr a
- 33:12Speaker 1: little bit with the Notre Dame offense that's struggling to
- 33:17Speaker 1: run the ball. Can Belichick throw a little something at C.J.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Carr to make it a little tougher? But he's fifth
- 33:22Speaker 1: in that pro football focus ranking of quarterbacks right now.
- 33:26Speaker 1: So that's a little bit. A couple other injury notes. Vandy,
- 33:29Speaker 1: Georgia in Athens. Jared Curtis, the freshman quarterback, showed up
- 33:33Speaker 1: as questionable last night. He, you know, running the football,
- 33:38Speaker 1: getting some hits in that Auburn game, but It's crucial
- 33:40Speaker 1: for him to make it competitive as they travel to Athens,
- 33:43Speaker 1: but he is questionable.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I think he'll play. He seems like a tough kid
- 33:47Speaker 2: that's going to be a little nicked up. You saw
- 33:50Speaker 2: that a little bit from Diego Pavia. I've seen really
- 33:54Speaker 2: good flashes from Jerry Curtis. Now, not good enough to
- 33:56Speaker 2: go in and beat this Georgia team. They haven't beaten
- 33:59Speaker 2: Georgia since Kirby's first year in 2016. And Vanderbilt, not
- 34:03Speaker 2: nearly as good as they were last year, but still...
- 34:06Speaker 2: you got to give Clark Lee credit. I mean, look,
- 34:08Speaker 2: they didn't win last week at Auburn, but they were competitive.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Clark Lee has brought us to the point in
- 34:13Speaker 1: our life where what is Vanderbilt's record right now?
- 34:16Speaker 2: Three and one.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Three and one.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:18Speaker 1: And we're like, yeah, Vanderbilt, they're not as good as
- 34:19Speaker 1: they have been. I mean, any other time in our life,
- 34:21Speaker 1: a three and one Vanderbilt team. A down three and
- 34:24Speaker 1: one for Vanderbilt. I know. A three and one Vanderbilt
- 34:25Speaker 1: team that went on the road to Auburn and only
- 34:27Speaker 1: lost by one possession. You'd have been like, my Lord,
- 34:30Speaker 1: Clark Lee coach of the year already.
- 34:31Speaker 2: But they've won 14 of their last 17 games.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. I'm saying he's changed the way we
- 34:36Speaker 1: think about Vanderbilt to his credit, to his immense credit.
- 34:39Speaker 1: College football playoff folks met yesterday. Um, October 9th is
- 34:44Speaker 1: within the window for ESPN to sort of throw their
- 34:47Speaker 1: financials at them. No decision made yesterday. Notre Dame, the
- 34:51Speaker 1: big 10, the big 12 and the ACC are all
- 34:54Speaker 1: in on the 2014 model. Now the SEC, according to
- 34:59Speaker 1: Ross Dellinger, Pete Thamel and those covering it are open
- 35:02Speaker 1: to the idea. October 9th, no decision made yet. They've
- 35:06Speaker 1: got to have a decision December one for next year.
- 35:08Speaker 1: It is looking like we're going to 24 teams. Um,
- 35:13Speaker 1: The way that would lay out, the discussion in the
- 35:17Speaker 1: room would be a buy on what is considered to
- 35:20Speaker 1: be championship weekend now. That's when we would get the
- 35:23Speaker 1: Army-Navy game and the Heisman Trophy presentation and all that.
- 35:29Speaker 1: And then we would start the playoffs the week after.
- 35:31Speaker 1: So conference championship games are done in this model. If
- 35:33Speaker 1: we go start next year.
- 35:35Speaker 2: It's amazing. The older I get, one thing I think
- 35:38Speaker 2: I've really worked well on is my patience. And I
- 35:40Speaker 2: think my patience has gotten to a point where I
- 35:42Speaker 2: don't explode over stupid things anymore. But we are the
- 35:45Speaker 2: most impatient society ever. We just got to 12 two
- 35:49Speaker 2: years ago.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And it seems like it's working because there's meaning in
- 35:54Speaker 1: these games. You can lose one. You can lose two.
- 35:57Speaker 1: You better not lose three. If you do lose three,
- 35:59Speaker 1: there's a path. but there's still some urgency in these games.
- 36:03Speaker 1: When you lose, it feels like it means something. Last
- 36:05Speaker 1: week felt like it meant something to USC.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Texas A & M very much still alive at 2-2.
- 36:12Speaker 2: We talked about their percentage right now, according to the
- 36:15Speaker 2: FBI or whatever, is like 6% to make the college
- 36:19Speaker 2: football playoff. But if we were in a 2014 playoff,
- 36:21Speaker 2: you can go 8-4 in the SEC and you're in.
- 36:23Speaker 1: To Lance's point, we've had the 12-team playoff for two years.
- 36:28Speaker 1: We only had the seating right for one year. In
- 36:31Speaker 1: the year we got the seating right, one of our
- 36:32Speaker 1: conferences was so incredibly bad, it impacted the field, and
- 36:38Speaker 1: we had to let two Group 5 teams in. They
- 36:41Speaker 1: have not even played a 12-team playoff in its proper
- 36:44Speaker 1: form yet. The proper form of the 12-team playoff is
- 36:46Speaker 1: not James Madison and Tulane being in. It would have
- 36:49Speaker 1: been Notre Dame and Miami being in. And the way
- 36:51Speaker 1: it's going to happen, Brown, is This year, they will
- 36:54Speaker 1: announce on December 1st. By December 1st, we're going to 24,
- 36:57Speaker 1: and then this will be the year we've got the
- 36:59Speaker 1: 12-team perfect to your point. Just right, and it's going
- 37:00Speaker 1: to be a great playoff. It'll be fabulous, and we're
- 37:03Speaker 1: going to be like, hmm, maybe we should stay here.
- 37:05Speaker 2: So what do you think it looks like? Because in
- 37:07Speaker 2: the current 12, four SEC, four Big Ten, probably one ACC,
- 37:13Speaker 2: one Big 12, your group six, and maybe Notre Dame.
- 37:18Speaker 2: But how many are they projecting from every conference?
- 37:21Speaker 1: First, let me give you the bracket. Nine through 16,
- 37:25Speaker 1: is that eight? Is that eight teams? Would be first
- 37:29Speaker 1: round on-campus host against the teams that are down to 24.
- 37:35Speaker 1: And there would be eight teams with buys. And then
- 37:38Speaker 1: the next week, on-campus again, those eight teams that had
- 37:41Speaker 1: buys would host the winners of the games before that.
- 37:44Speaker 1: That's a positive. Two on-campus games is a positive. I
- 37:47Speaker 1: would agree.
- 37:47Speaker 2: I don't like buys at all.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Yep.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Well, those byes allows you to at least get a
- 37:52Speaker 1: bye and you don't miss a home on-campus game. And
- 37:54Speaker 1: nobody gets two home games.
- 37:55Speaker 2: But if you're getting that bye, if we don't have
- 37:57Speaker 2: conference championship games, how far is that gap?
- 38:00Speaker 1: It's not. It's boom, boom. They're going to play those
- 38:02Speaker 1: back-to-back weeks.
- 38:04Speaker 2: So the first round would be the weekend of conference championships.
- 38:08Speaker 1: They're debating on whether that's going to be a bye
- 38:10Speaker 1: week to keep Army-Navy on our day by itself and
- 38:13Speaker 1: have the Heisman Trophy. which I would just go ahead
- 38:16Speaker 1: and conference championship start the tournament. But we'll see how
- 38:19Speaker 1: they play that out. To your point, there are minimums
- 38:23Speaker 1: for the Big 12 to the ACC to the SEC.
- 38:29Speaker 1: And the Big 10, I think, were minimums of four
- 38:33Speaker 1: getting in. And then the rest would be wild cards.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Notre Dame is obviously in if they're in the top 44.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I mean, you start to force two ACC's. Go back
- 38:40Speaker 2: to last year.
- 38:41Speaker 1: It would have been Duke. The ACC was so bad
- 38:44Speaker 1: last year, you let in two group of five. So
- 38:46Speaker 1: last year you would have had Miami and Duke. Yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 1: If we do this, I would. Which is better than
- 38:51Speaker 1: James Madison, honestly. I would be okay with wiping out
- 38:53Speaker 1: the auto for the group of six. I would too.
- 38:55Speaker 1: You've got to be in the top 24. I mean,
- 38:56Speaker 1: if you can't be in the top 24, you don't
- 38:58Speaker 1: deserve to be there.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Of course, now they're never going to do it if
- 39:00Speaker 2: we expand to 24.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Is there a group of five in the top 24
- 39:03Speaker 1: right now?
- 39:05Speaker 4: No.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I don't think so. Jim, you've got the rankings over there.
- 39:07Speaker 7: By the end of the year. Boise is in the
- 39:09Speaker 7: top 25 right now.
- 39:10Speaker 1: They are? Where are they ranked? Is that AP or coaches?
- 39:13Speaker 1: That's AP. Where are they, Brooks? In the 20s. Yeah, 22.
- 39:16Speaker 6: 22?
- 39:16Speaker 1: All right, so see, Boise's in.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Not in the coaches, but 22 in the AP.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Then Boise's in. And again, keep in mind, the playoff
- 39:24Speaker 1: committee is who does the ranking. So if they are like, hey, listen,
- 39:28Speaker 1: this Duke team, they are no good. This Boise team,
- 39:31Speaker 1: we need a group five in there. Let's drop Duke
- 39:33Speaker 1: out and let's put Boise in. They can control that.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I mean, if a team's good enough, they're going to
- 39:37Speaker 1: be in the top 24. I don't worry about that.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I'm with you. Let's don't make it a mandated one
- 39:42Speaker 1: has to be in there. If we've got a year
- 39:43Speaker 1: where they all suck in the group of whatever that
- 39:45Speaker 1: is now, group of six. I guess the goal then
- 39:48Speaker 1: would be playing for the The first round by on-campus
- 39:52Speaker 1: round two game. That'd be your urgency in the regular season.
- 39:57Speaker 1: The way you're presenting this, two weeks off. I mean,
- 40:00Speaker 1: I guess in college football that's okay. Yeah, well, maybe
- 40:02Speaker 1: it's only one week off. Could be. If they play
- 40:05Speaker 1: the championship Saturday. I mean, this feels like you're trampling
- 40:09Speaker 1: on holy ground here for some people when you say this.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I think we don't need to worry about Army-Navy, and
- 40:14Speaker 1: I certainly don't care about the Heisman Trophy presentation. I mean,
- 40:17Speaker 1: let's do what's best for the college football playoff, and Army-Navy,
- 40:22Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you'll find them.
- 40:24Speaker 1: You'll figure it out. Heisman folks actually said yesterday, as
- 40:27Speaker 1: this was breaking, there's no good solution for us with
- 40:30Speaker 1: a 2014 playoff. The last thing I care about is
- 40:31Speaker 1: the Heisman Trophy presentation. Back in the old days, they
- 40:33Speaker 1: used to— They'll do it in January. They made the announcement—
- 40:37Speaker 1: sometimes for the regular seasons, who won the Heisman, and
- 40:40Speaker 1: then they had a banquet in January in New York.
- 40:42Speaker 1: You'll figure it out. Heisman will figure it out. All right,
- 40:44Speaker 1: one more break. One more thing to go. Winning streaks
- 40:47Speaker 1: going on right now since 2000. Brooks sent a graphic
- 40:50Speaker 1: out earlier at Next Round Live. We'll talk about that
- 40:53Speaker 1: when we come back on the next round presented by
- 40:55Speaker 1: Sporting State. Boy, there's a lot of great stories told
- 41:00Speaker 1: by SEC story to our 30 and 30. If you're
- 41:04Speaker 1: a Tennessee fan, T. Martin's story, 17, is going to
- 41:10Speaker 1: be released on tonight at 8 o'clock, 9 Eastern, 8
- 41:15Speaker 1: o'clock tonight on the SEC Network. This T. Martin story,
- 41:19Speaker 1: growing up, I believe, in the Mobile area in Alabama
- 41:22Speaker 1: and then going to Tennessee and waiting behind Peyton Manning
- 41:25Speaker 1: and then bringing Tennessee a national championship. So that's happening
- 41:29Speaker 1: tonight on the SEC Network. Since 2000, there have been
- 41:35Speaker 1: uh some massive win streaks in college football do you
- 41:39Speaker 1: guys know if there are any current ones that make
- 41:43Speaker 1: that list right now the best win streak since 2000
- 41:46Speaker 1: in college football yeah i.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Mean indiana is 20 straight and then uh notre dame's
- 41:51Speaker 2: not four off they've won 16.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Straight indiana is on the list right now brooks sent
- 41:56Speaker 1: out the graphic earlier at next round live for sure
- 41:59Speaker 1: is going to give it a show for us here
- 42:01Speaker 1: and it's Indiana is on that list of great win
- 42:05Speaker 1: streaks since 2000 with 20 straight but look at how
- 42:09Speaker 1: many 20 plus win streaks we've had since 2000 Miami
- 42:15Speaker 1: with a record of 34 SC 34 now there are
- 42:18Speaker 1: longer win streaks in college football I believe was it
- 42:21Speaker 1: Oklahoma 55 Florida State 29 Clemson 29 on that run
- 42:29Speaker 1: That Dabo and them went on with Trevor Lawrence and
- 42:32Speaker 1: them there.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Now, can you tell me who they lost to on
- 42:35Speaker 2: these current streaks?
- 42:36Speaker 1: Oh, Miami, I think, was Washington. Miami was Ohio State
- 42:40Speaker 1: in the national championship game, right? Yeah, this is since 2000.
- 42:43Speaker 1: You're going, Lance, the Washington one was back in the 90s, right?
- 42:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess that was Ohio State.
- 42:48Speaker 1: So it's Ohio State. It's Texas, I believe. Southern Cal.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Florida State lost to Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Clemson
- 42:57Speaker 1: lost to LSU. Nope. Pitt?
- 43:02Speaker 7: That's right.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Yep.
- 43:02Speaker 7: Joe Burrow in LSU.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Okay. Georgia lost to... Probably Alabama, if I had to guess.
- 43:07Speaker 7: Nick Saban in Alabama, the SEC champion.
- 43:09Speaker 1: That's going to be the story of Georgia's life. Alabama
- 43:11Speaker 1: lost to... Clemson, national championship. No, Central Florida. That was
- 43:17Speaker 1: the pick play, Jim. Rubber out or pick play, depending
- 43:20Speaker 1: on which color you're on.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Who knows Central Florida?
- 43:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Central Florida. I could spend the rest of the
- 43:23Speaker 1: show guessing. That would be Joe Burrow in LSU. Okay.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Joe got two, huh?
- 43:27Speaker 2: Boise, I think it was Nevada.
- 43:28Speaker 5: Nevada?
- 43:30Speaker 7: That actually is probably right. Colin Kaepernick in Nevada, I think, was.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Responsible for that. The first one, the 24, is 2010.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Boise's on there twice. The other one was 2004.
- 43:43Speaker 3: Can't tell you that one at all. I'm pretty sure
- 43:44Speaker 3: Nevada's right, though, for the 09 through 10 one.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Back-to-back Ohio State. Who are those, Brooks? Do you know? 2013.
- 43:55Speaker 2: One's Virginia Tech.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 2: That's the 2014-15.
- 44:00Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 44:01Speaker 7: 15 was Michigan State.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Yeah, 13 was the Virginia Tech one, right? No.
- 44:07Speaker 3: They lost in 2014, the second week of the season
- 44:10Speaker 3: to Virginia Tech and then went on to win the
- 44:12Speaker 3: national championship running the table and then were undefeated all
- 44:16Speaker 3: the way up until November of next year and got
- 44:18Speaker 3: beat on a field goal at home in the horseshoe
- 44:20Speaker 3: by Michigan State who wound up winning the Big Ten
- 44:22Speaker 3: that year.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Florida was Alabama.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Correct.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Because that was the Tim Tebow Ole Miss loss and
- 44:28Speaker 1: then they won them all until they lost to Bama.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Texas in 06.
- 44:32Speaker 3: I think that was a road game with freshman quarterback
- 44:36Speaker 3: Colt McCoy starting at Ohio State.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Wow. Washington on there. How about Washington?
- 44:43Speaker 7: That's Kalen DeBoer's Washington.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Michigan. Michigan. And the national championship came. How about that?
- 44:50Speaker 1: Kalen DeBoer rings the bell. Well, I did not remember
- 44:53Speaker 1: them winning 22 consecutive games prior to that national championship. 21,
- 44:56Speaker 1: but yes. 21.
- 44:57Speaker 2: West Coast, man.
- 44:58Speaker 1: You were asleep.
- 45:01Speaker 3: I won 11-2 the first year and then started 14-0
- 45:03Speaker 3: the next year.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Bob Stoops, Oklahoma. I'll take a wild guess and go Texas? Nope.
- 45:10Speaker 7: I don't know if that's right. I'd have to look
- 45:12Speaker 7: it up, actually.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And then Indiana gets to 21 and it's Matt Rule
- 45:16Speaker 1: in Nebraska next week. And that's when you think it ends.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I do.
- 45:20Speaker 3: At number three, Nebraska, who went to the national championship
- 45:23Speaker 3: that year.
- 45:23Speaker 7: So Eric Crouch.
- 45:24Speaker 1: See, Nebraska's going to get these last two here. I
- 45:27Speaker 1: said this in the offseason. If you'll remember, Lance was out.
- 45:30Speaker 1: You and I did a show, and I mentioned that
- 45:32Speaker 1: oftentimes win streaks don't end where you expect them. They
- 45:35Speaker 1: end where you least expect them. Pull up Indiana's schedule.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Your point is Nebraska, back in the summer, you would think, okay,
- 45:41Speaker 1: Indiana wins that one. But they have an Ohio State.
- 45:44Speaker 1: They have Ohio State right after that, and then I
- 45:46Speaker 1: think Michigan right after Ohio State. Let me look real quick. Yeah,
- 45:48Speaker 1: they've got Ohio State at home and then at Michigan.
- 45:53Speaker 1: And my point was, like, if you're going to end
- 45:55Speaker 1: Indiana's win streak, you're going to say, oh, it's Ohio
- 45:57Speaker 1: State or Michigan. It's often not the– as we just
- 46:01Speaker 1: did with this exercise, listen how often you set a
- 46:03Speaker 1: team and you're like, oh, that's who they lost to?
- 46:05Speaker 1: That's interesting. I mean, now sometimes it's Bama beating Georgia.
- 46:08Speaker 1: I mean, those do happen. I'm not saying they don't.
- 46:10Speaker 1: But I am saying oftentimes those long win streaks end
- 46:13Speaker 1: where you least expect them. Put that list back up
- 46:15Speaker 1: if you can, Forrester. Actually, Brown– just the opposite on
- 46:17Speaker 1: this list since the 2000s. Well, I went historic before 2000.
- 46:20Speaker 1: I'm a pre-2000 guy. Before 2000, like Alabama's was at
- 46:23Speaker 1: Mississippi State in the 70s. I'm King James version. But look,
- 46:26Speaker 1: this Miami was a national championship game, national championship game, playoffs, playoffs.
- 46:31Speaker 4: Yep.
- 46:32Speaker 1: And, I guess an SEC championship game, national championship. Yeah,
- 46:36Speaker 1: regular season, regular season, regular season, regular season. UCF was
- 46:40Speaker 1: New Year's Six Bowl. New Year's Six Bowl.
- 46:42Speaker 2: I mean, how deep?
- 46:43Speaker 1: Hey, does anybody else want to ask? Scott, do you
- 46:45Speaker 1: agree with me? Do you want to blow this up too, Scott?
- 46:48Speaker 1: How do you feel? Well, uh....
- 46:52Speaker 3: Before Jim called for that back, I was getting ready
- 46:55Speaker 3: to pop.
- 46:56Speaker 1: You mean Kirk Cignetti's concert tour? Is that what that is?
- 47:00Speaker 3: You're putting up Cignetti's head with a few teams named
- 47:03Speaker 3: beside him.
- 47:03Speaker 1: That's right.
- 47:04Speaker 3: I had to blow it up that big just so
- 47:06Speaker 3: you could read the games that they're going to play.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Is that where Kirk is at concert? Is he a
- 47:10Speaker 1: country cover band, Kirk Cignetti?
- 47:11Speaker 2: I'll tell you, if they get passed.
- 47:13Speaker 7: We already called him a Nick Saban cover band.
- 47:15Speaker 1: We did. We did do that. Jim did.
- 47:17Speaker 2: If they get passed to Ohio State, I know you're
- 47:19Speaker 2: saying Nebraska next weekend in Lincoln. I'm not feeling that yet.
- 47:23Speaker 1: They're going to lose a game this year, though. I agree.
- 47:25Speaker 2: But if they get past Ohio State, now it doesn't
- 47:28Speaker 2: look as difficult as it did.
- 47:29Speaker 1: But you think they're going to lose a game. So
- 47:31Speaker 1: if you take Ohio State off the board, where is it?
- 47:34Speaker 2: I mean, it could be at Michigan. It could be USC.
- 47:37Speaker 1: It could be at Washington. The way they played against Northwestern, 1-2-3.
- 47:43Speaker 1: You could see them losing possibly four games. If they
- 47:45Speaker 1: play that same game that they played against Northwestern, yes.
- 47:48Speaker 2: I remember us coming in after North Texas, and I
- 47:50Speaker 2: remember talking about they just don't look the same. Now
- 47:53Speaker 2: it was a one-game sample, but that's kind of continued.
- 47:56Speaker 2: And I do think, I mean, the good news is
- 47:59Speaker 2: they've only turned the football over one time in four games.
- 48:01Speaker 2: I mean, if they continue to do that, they're going
- 48:03Speaker 2: to win a lot of games.
- 48:05Speaker 1: So that's the long win streak. Indiana, no sweat. Did
- 48:09Speaker 1: somebody say it was going to be Nebraska that did it? Ryan? Ryan.
- 48:12Speaker 3: You do know that Nebraska is 2-34 versus ranked opponents
- 48:17Speaker 3: since joining the Big Ten.
- 48:18Speaker 1: You know what that means? They're due. They are due.
- 48:21Speaker 1: They're 2-34.
- 48:22Speaker 7: 0-8 under Matt Roll.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm well aware of the records, guys. When I
- 48:26Speaker 1: make this pick, I know I'm going against the norm.
- 48:29Speaker 1: That's what makes them an upset. If we knew it
- 48:31Speaker 1: was going to happen, it would be an upset. Do
- 48:33Speaker 1: I need to put the mask on to go ahead
- 48:35Speaker 1: and do this, or can I wait until Tuesday? Give
- 48:38Speaker 1: me a new kick, too. Give me cut 14 if
- 48:40Speaker 1: you can, Tyler. One of the biggest stars, and I'm
- 48:44Speaker 1: surprised it did not make anybody's biggest surprise list so far,
- 48:49Speaker 1: is Buster Faulkner. Buster Faulkner is now the most popular
- 48:56Speaker 1: buster in the United States, right?
- 48:58Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Don't disrespect buster only but probably so i love buster
- 49:01Speaker 1: only buster is always gonna be my favorite buster buster's
- 49:04Speaker 1: ice cream and brewsters again twice you've messed that one up.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Brewsters buster douglas was big for a moment dave.
- 49:11Speaker 1: And busters buster posey buster posey buster keaton buster faulkner
- 49:16Speaker 1: buster keaton it's all buster faulkner right now.
- 49:19Speaker 2: You got buster the uh bunny from the arthur pbs show.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Yeah still still buster faulkner buster faulkner dave and busters
- 49:26Speaker 1: am i right about that is that restaurant that is
- 49:28Speaker 1: a arcade slash restaurant i have never eaten it at
- 49:30Speaker 1: dave and buster i've never.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Stepped foot i've stepped foot in one like three or
- 49:34Speaker 2: four times i've eaten one time yeah It's about what
- 49:37Speaker 2: you'd think.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I was about to say that was not a ring
- 49:39Speaker 1: of few words, but I ate there one time. Did
- 49:41Speaker 1: their food taste like we had animatronic people singing country
- 49:45Speaker 1: hip-hop songs?
- 49:45Speaker 6: Slightly better.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Slightly better? Microwave or deep fry, take your pick.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Animatronic.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Or freezer burned. Yeah, or freezer burned with fries.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Buster Faulkner here gets asked about Florida's offensive identity. Is
- 49:59Speaker 1: there a chance it says, it's me?
- 50:02Speaker 5: Two games in a row, 50-plus attempts, if you include,
- 50:05Speaker 5: I guess, Aaron's performance.
- 50:06Speaker 4: Scrambles.
- 50:07Speaker 6: Is that the identity you think of this offense?
- 50:09Speaker 5: You want to be able to impose your will on
- 50:13Speaker 5: the ground first and foremost.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's important. Imposing your will in all
- 50:18Speaker 4: of football. Was our plan to run it 50 times?
- 50:23Speaker 5: No.
- 50:23Speaker 4: One thing is, and you've heard me say it multiple
- 50:25Speaker 4: times since I've been here, is we have a lot
- 50:26Speaker 4: of volume in our offense. We practice it from the
- 50:30Speaker 4: time we get here all the way through fall camp.
- 50:33Speaker 4: Then we put together a game plan You know, we
- 50:35Speaker 4: had a couple guys go down, so some things change
- 50:38Speaker 4: throughout the course of the game. And then sometimes it's
- 50:41Speaker 4: the flow of the game, and you can just feel
- 50:43Speaker 4: it kind of led to that, right, for multiple reasons. So,
- 50:51Speaker 4: you know, it's good to be able to do that.
- 50:53Speaker 4: You know, we want to be an offense that can
- 50:55Speaker 4: beat you in really any facet. If we've got to
- 50:57Speaker 4: drop back, if we've got to play action, screen game,
- 51:00Speaker 4: you know, all the different things, you know– when the
- 51:03Speaker 4: time arises, we've got to be able to beat you
- 51:05Speaker 4: in those cases.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Okay, stop sign is up here for a reason because
- 51:09Speaker 1: I want to ask the question. First of all, by
- 51:12Speaker 1: a show of hands, how many people heard him for
- 51:14Speaker 1: the first time there? Never heard him before. Not what
- 51:16Speaker 1: I thought he'd sound like. Okay, secondly? Do you still
- 51:20Speaker 1: think he could be the coach of the USC Trojans
- 51:22Speaker 1: after hearing him?
- 51:24Speaker 2: Well, Clay Helton was.
- 51:25Speaker 1: That's a good point. Lance makes a good point.
- 51:28Speaker 2: This guy is country as corn.
- 51:30Speaker 1: He's from Valdosta, Georgia. I know he played quarterback at Valdosta.
- 51:34Speaker 1: That does not blow me away when I hear him talk.
- 51:35Speaker 2: I heard Shannon Dawson for the first time yesterday.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Did not sound like I thought he was Shannon.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Very, very strange. Sounded like he had been at the
- 51:41Speaker 2: dentist and had a couple of cavities filled um but
- 51:45Speaker 2: that is very interesting yeah now i saw you all
- 51:48Speaker 2: of a sudden you you very quickly went southeastern conference
- 51:52Speaker 2: on his future yeah but you know jimbo fisher i
- 51:55Speaker 2: mean you did you did no i mean florida state
- 51:57Speaker 2: jimbo stayed in that that that footprint but i think
- 52:00Speaker 2: there was a point where there were a lot of
- 52:01Speaker 2: schools that would have taken.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Jim i mean i think if i'm florida state before
- 52:04Speaker 1: i go jimbo fisher i'm like what's it take to
- 52:06Speaker 1: get this guy he already lives in our state He's
- 52:09Speaker 1: already enrolled in the retirement system in our state. I mean,
- 52:12Speaker 1: it's very easy for us. I mean, but he, when you,
- 52:15Speaker 1: and it's, I love the Southern accent. I am from
- 52:18Speaker 1: the South. I grew up here. I've lived here my
- 52:20Speaker 1: entire life. Never lived outside of the SEC.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Oh, you can see if he's strong. If he, if
- 52:24Speaker 2: Buster was in the same situation five years deep as
- 52:28Speaker 2: Lincoln with the same The same record. I mean, can
- 52:31Speaker 2: you imagine the L.A. Times, what they'd be saying about
- 52:33Speaker 2: this guy?
- 52:34Speaker 1: Fogg Allen in the chat says, guys, there's a Jim
- 52:36Speaker 1: Bob Cooter with NFL coaching experience. Oh, I know.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Never got a head job.
- 52:41Speaker 1: He did not get a head coaching job, but he
- 52:42Speaker 1: coached for the Lions. He's a Detroit named Jim Bob Cooter.
- 52:45Speaker 1: You don't see... A guy that talks like that usually
- 52:49Speaker 1: with a USC logo behind him, a Michigan logo behind him,
- 52:53Speaker 1: an Ohio State logo behind him. I did see somebody
- 52:55Speaker 1: in the college football media world that I follow, Andy
- 52:57Speaker 1: Staples or someone like that, of that ilk, said Florida
- 53:02Speaker 1: should never make him available to the media again because
- 53:04Speaker 1: he sounds just like a head coach.
- 53:06Speaker 3: Might I remind you that we did see Ed Ogeron
- 53:09Speaker 3: as the interim USC head coach.
- 53:11Speaker 1: We did. Interim was the key there. Did not get
- 53:13Speaker 1: the job.
- 53:14Speaker 2: First of all, SC, I don't believe, is going to
- 53:16Speaker 2: hire a coordinator.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Right. I know. But you mentioned earlier that you thought
- 53:21Speaker 1: Buster would be a guy you'd be interested in. He's
- 53:23Speaker 1: going to be a hot name. That's it for today
- 53:26Speaker 1: on Sporting State. We continue this conversation and a lot
- 53:29Speaker 1: more on Alabama-Mississippi State coming up on the next round
- 53:32Speaker 1: at Next Round Live on our YouTube channel. Have a
- 53:35Speaker 1: great day.
