- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: something that worked really well for me and I do this now with every single one of my clients just because I believe so deeply in the power of doing it but my coach actually had to write a look back in tension later.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, I want you to get really granular with this.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_01]: I want you to tell me how things look, taste, smell, what you're feeling a year from now and what will you have done a year from now.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at this letter every day, and if it didn't align to what that letter had in it, I wasn't doing it.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't going to consume my energy.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: If we haven't met yet, welcome back to the 6th or your certified podcast.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm your host Olivia, and I'm joined by a special guest today.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: Her name is Laura Reynolds.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: Not only.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: is she an executive endurance coach, so she works with high-powered leaders and executives to basically get over themselves and be successful, but she's also a graduate of IGC who went through training, got her hours, got credentialed and quit her nine to five at like record speed.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: So without further ado, Laura, welcome to the show you're gonna kick everyone's butt today.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks so much for having me live in one of the introduction.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: Hard to follow that, but yes, I super excited to be here and share kind of my story of how I got quick corporate and started coaching.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: Awesome.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: So Laura, tell us a little bit about corporate first because I know a lot of people that watch this.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: They look up how to videos like how to quit your 95, how to start a coaching business and you're like the quintessential example, but like tell us what you were doing and why you wanted to get out.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I spent the bulk of my actually really the entirety of my career in recruiting.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: I stumbled into it right out of college and it was something that I quickly fell in love with.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: I took a liking to it.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: I really liked working with.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: I had like the quote unquote, like I loved working with people.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: And at the time, that was kind of the job that aligned.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I've only didn't know what it was, but the part that I loved about recruiting so much was
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: digging deeper beneath the surface.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: I loved to kind of get that glory of like filling a position, but then I wanted the follow-up of like, how are you developing this person that I just hired for you?
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: And that's kind of where I felt like recruiting always fell short and I found myself wanting to provide a deeper level of service offering than whatever was allowed to do in that capacity.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I eventually moved up in Talonac with his vision consulting and I was a manager for the function and then I was eventually a global leader for the function.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: But I still felt like that part of really developing somebody's entire mindset in order to be a stronger leader was missing.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I was really kind of starting to get curious about that.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: probably two years before I really made the switch.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, the bulk of it was in Talonac position consulting.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: So hiring for corporate settings.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Did you?
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: So, I feel like especially with very professional, established, respected women, not that we all are in our own right, but like women, higher up and corporate.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: There are two types.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: There are some that are like, I want to be doing this deeper level work.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: I understand coaching, I respect coaching, I get it.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's others that are like, that's so weird or fruit-through or woo-woo or like,
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: So like, how did you kind of tap into coaching and realize that this was like a legit model that you could ultimately do those things that you wanted to do with people for your health?
- 3:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was that.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: I was the person that kind of held off on going after this.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I knew that there was always this tugging in me of like I really want.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: I enjoyed coaching people outside of my professional job.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: I am an ultra marathon runner and I triathlete.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: So I was kind of coaching people in that space, too.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it was definitely a more like firm type of coaching.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: It was a tough love type of coaching.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: And that's kind of
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: How I wanted to show up in that space where like I was going to give you the tough feedback that everybody else other ever every boss you've had every executive that you've had has been maybe scared to to give you.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, how do I show up in that way?
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: Because the coaches that I was seeing at that time weren't that they were a little more we were they did come in and do.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: you know, discuss exercises and that's great.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: But that was what the extent was that I was seeing.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, how do I differentiate myself and still kind of appear in that professional way and have people take me seriously, but provide us a more human offering than what I was seeing for bread setting.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: Have you ever seen the show billions?
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: So you know Wendy,
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: This reminds me of Wendy.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: So like I think that she has a lot of if you haven't watched the show just bear with me for like 15 seconds, but obviously there's some like weird parts of her character and all of that, but I feel like her in the office is kind of like what you maybe would have wanted to be doing like really developing the mindset of the leader and like building that resilience building that you know perseverance that like never give up, never
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot that you're also this, like, marathon at least.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: Persian, and I'm like, this makes so much sense.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: So, like, long question, longer.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like, do you ever incorporate the athleticism or the physical training into your coaching offer?
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: So that's actually what really catapulted my entire coaching businesses because I really did and do use the endurance mindset that I used to get through physical endurance efforts.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: I actually relate that to the business world because I found that showing up so much when I was coaching athletes on the side and I was having some of these professional conversations and helping to develop some of these leaders.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was noticing that the same grit that you need to get through a physical effort, like an ultra marathon, like a triathlon, anything physical, that same mentality is needed to be a strong leader.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to have to have that, like, will to get over this adversity.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to have to look at yourself in the mirror and have difficult conversations of, like, you're not tough enough today, but tomorrow you might be.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: So, like, what can you do between now and tomorrow to show up better?
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: Those same conversations have to occur in the workplace.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: So I use sports analogies all the time in my country.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: I also am like a huge fan, or developing a huge fanhood, if you will, for women's sports.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: I read a research report recently because a lot of art
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: admissions advisors are they were in women's sports in college and so forth and like I stumble or maybe they sent it to me some report about like women in sports being able to lead more effectively and they have higher positions and I just I didn't know any of this but I'm so fascinated by the parallel and I am not sporty.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you know that
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: If I wasn't there, well, not like the traditional quote unquote athlete, right?
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like right.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: And that's part of what I, what I coach around to is like you think that you have to be an athlete actually benefit from an intern's mentality.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's an athlete.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: It really comes down to the conversations that you have with yourself when you're in a state of stuff.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like that is what determines a real athlete from like the traditional athlete that we say.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: So then you must have been able to have those conversations with yourself before leaving corporate.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: So kind of going, reminding a little, what is the timeline?
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: So like you decided you were interested in starting your own thing.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like give us kind of like the basic timeline.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_01]: So honestly it all happened in probably eight months.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: So this time last year I was laid off in
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: actually on Halloween, and it was semi-expected.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was kind of miserable in the position, and we were just trying to make it work, and it just wasn't working.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't want to be there.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: They knew I didn't want to be there.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: So, and it was a terrible time and hiring for technology.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_01]: I was leading a technical practice, so we kind of agreed, like we've hit the end of the road here.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I could have done what I always did and go right back into the thing that I knew.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I was good at it.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm good at recruiting.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: I'm good at managing the talent function.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_01]: I could have very easily just stepped into a leadership role in talent acquisition again.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was gone back to the job before that again and had no problems.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: But this particular one, I was like, maybe this is the moment.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe this is the fall that I needed to have to really, like, maybe it's not happening to me.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's happening for me and I need to see it as that for once.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, don't feel, you know, sorry for yourself about this.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the opportunity to do the thing that you've really wanted to do all along because that position, the one that I took before coaching, I knew when I took it.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: I was not in.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like I was kind of already one foot out the door before starting.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: I was scared.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: I was scared to do it by myself.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: I had no idea whether I was going to make the type of money that I was making in corporate.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: I had no idea if I was going to show up in the professional way.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: I had a pretty professional name developed for myself, especially within the LinkedIn community and the business world.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: People knew who I was in the recruiting world.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, how do I keep that up in this business that I know really nothing about at that time?
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I think I
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: on Halloween.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: And then I was one of my friends from one of my running groups talked to me.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: And she's like, hey, I actually have this friend Kendall who lives in the area.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: She's part of this academy called IGC.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, I've always thought of you to be a really good coach.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully that's what you're considering doing.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: In this next phase, I would love for you to talk to Kendall.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: Kendall put me in touch with Caitlin.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: And that was probably
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: I guess early November, and at that time after having the conversation with both Kendall and Caitlin, I think within a week, I committed not only to the full blown level to Academy, but I signed up for my own coach at the exact same time.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I want to do this and I want to build my business at the same time as learning how to be a coach and be a credentialed coach.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: Because I could feel myself unraveling and being frantic of not knowing where to start and not having an income at the time.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: So it was like I need a coach to help guide me through this as I'm going through the academy.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: Smartest decision I've ever made.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: Because she kind of held my hand through that process.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: But I did the
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: the level two academy we graduated in September and Hawkins reached out to me about mentoring for their academy that's they're looking to be accredited for an ICF accreditation and I had put I have reached out to them maybe
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: two months before I graduated, saying, hey, if you're interested in coaches, I'm pursuing IPCC.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: They said, thanks, no, thanks.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: We need to hold your PCC before we can hire you on board.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: I asked for staying contact.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: They said, sure.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: The second that they saw that I was a certified life coach, they reached back out to me, that they said, do you still want to be a coach?
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: I said, yes, they said, can you sit for and pass your exam before October 15th?
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: Was that was the start date of their academy?
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: Which was 11 days from when I graduated.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: So we had no idea if we could make this happen at the time, but Kendall and I moved mountains.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: And we were like, how do we submit all this stuff?
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because usually, you know, it takes anywhere from three to six weeks to have all of that review to get back to you.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then you kind of sign up for the exam.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: The greater powers that be must have been on my side, because it was done in record time.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I had graduated and then sat and passed my PCC exam in 11 days.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, so within nine months you had
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: decided to commit to a full-time business for yourself, went through IGC coach training, hired your own coach, got PCC, which is the ICF level two credential, if ever anyone watching us like, what does that mean?
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: That's where you have to do at least 125 hours of training, 10 mentor coaching hours, and pass the credentialing exam.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: And we have like 100% pass rate at IGC, so I'm glad you passed.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: You see, I like the type of person who would pass a test, though I'm not going to lie.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to not pass, that's not even an option.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: So this is all, so now you're fully working for yourself.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: Replace your corporate income.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: within like nine ten months.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, essentially close.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: So eight month mark.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: People are going to say must be nice.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: She got lucky.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: Blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: But obviously, you've already said what you did.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: I really think that the whole thing here, which is hard to explain to people.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm never the one to, I mean, you had already been laid off.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: So like that's a little bit of a different story.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think that can be the best thing to ever happen.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone, even though I was teaching, I knew that if I didn't resign, I was probably going to get fired because I just could not
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: like this is standards that they wanted me to not like I wasn't teaching well, but like I couldn't like drill in practice for standardized test 24 seven.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: I was losing my mind and I wasn't doing it.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, I had to resign.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: But if you, I never say quit your job to anyone.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's like
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: mildly irresponsible of me, however, I do say like quit your job if you have a plan.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: So what I want to know from you, Laura, is like, say you were still in your job, but you knew, I mean, it sounds like it had been like, you know, the seed was already planted.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what are a few things that people listening to this, where maybe in corporate, but their hearts not didn't anymore?
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: They've thought about this, but they're also like, is life coaching too weird and like, obviously you're
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: An example of remaining highly respected and professional inside of a, you know, slightly different container, but like what can they do to develop their like nine to five eggs at strategy.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I would say the same thing to somebody that's looking to get into coaching as I do to any one of my clients it's looking to start their own thing and that's to start talking is if you're already doing it like start manifesting the thing I it's It sounds silly to a lot of people but manifestation has been such a real part of this is like start talking
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: like you're already in the job start start talking to the people that are in the job and start talking people about what it is that you like to do not what you've done and that's what I tell a lot of my of the people that come to me for business coaching they'll come to me and they'll show me their resume and I'll show me their LinkedIn and part of my offering is LinkedIn and resume optimization.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: And everybody, the go-to is that they talk about what they've always done.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you're getting ready to leave your job that you're unhappy in.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: And that's because you're only talking about what you've already done.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: Start talking about what you want to do.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: What makes you happy, not just what you're good at.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: But start talking about, hey, I really enjoy mentoring people.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: I really love to get people from a state of stock to unstuck.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: I love working with people that are in these pivotal moments in their life or maybe they're going through a divorce, maybe they just had a baby and they have to re-identify themselves or they have to decide between going back to work or staying home.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they're recovering from an injury and they're an athlete.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like these are all things that I love to work with people through.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I started talking to my network about that.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of already was starting to put feelers out there, even though I hadn't put a title to it, I wasn't calling myself a coach, but luckily I was kind of working in a consulting capacity already, so I kind of already had like that hat on that capacity.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: But I started talking about the fact that that was something that really interested me, and then those people would start to gravitate towards me and talk to me about opportunities where I might be able to do that.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: And they were like, oh, I didn't realize that you, you know, were well-versed and that we actually could could use you for doing this.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: And they kind of started to come to me for the things that I wanted to do.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: All of a sudden, versus the things that I had already done.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: They were like, we know you can recruit.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's fine.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: You've recruited for us for years.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: We have this leader of ours that's really struggling because they were a high-performing I.C.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: now we've moved him into a leadership role and they cannot retain their team.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: We would love for you to talk to them.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: So that's like where it started to kind of grow was that I was talking to my network about that being the work that I wanted to do.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, and also I must know that doing that is free everyone.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're like, I just, I don't have the money.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have the, it's literally free to start talking about what you want to do and what you would like to be doing versus like Laura mentioned, what you've always done.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I think if there's parts of what you have always done that you still enjoy, like sure, bring it in.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like I even say like, as a former teacher, I'm still teaching all the time.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's just very different, yeah, of course.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so number one is to start, I mean, essentially you're bringing to life or bringing to words what you want, like where you want to be going versus where you've been right and as if yeah and start talking about what you want to do versus what you don't want to do at the people stay stuck because they keep saying, oh, I don't want to do that again.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to do that again.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what do you want to do start saying that.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: What else are you for us?
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: The other one that I would say is, I did a lot of market research pretty early on.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: I actually scheduled a ton of consult calls with other coaches that were respected in the area.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: I did a Google search of who were the top coaches and at the time, I think they had actually just had like bottom-ores top 20 coaches in the area, scheduled a consult with every single one of them.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I want to see how they're showing up.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see what the consult calls look like.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see what they call.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: emails look like when they are sending me confirmations.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see how they dress.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see how their Zoom calls look like.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see if they're my kind of psychotic.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: I love this.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: I am the same kind of psycho.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see what's working and what's not working.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I was really up front with them about it.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, look, I am considering getting into this space.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: You're really respectful in this field.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: tell them if you've seen their content or they'd like to post or they've engaged in something that you feel aligned to, call it out and say I really like how you're showing up and talking about this subject.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to learn more about that.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: People love to talk about themselves.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_01]: They love to talk about how they got into their career.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_01]: So just like I said to people that are looking to change their careers and when they're looking to do strategic outreach to people,
- 18:25[SPEAKER_01]: be a human like ask them say I'm really interested in picking your brain about how you became successful in this field I asked Kate on about it I saw how quick her success was seemingly happening and I was like what are you doing like how did you do this?
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: I need to be surprised but people were kind of willing to put out there I learned a lot about what what technologies made sense for me to invest in what sort of tracking systems I needed what sort of calendar I needed that was all from console calls that I did
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: which, by the way, are also typically free, right?
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right, you're getting a lot so much.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think that there's a great misconception that running a coaching business is like, get rich overnight or like, you just need to be an influencer.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: You just need to all this social media content.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I still...
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I use social media quite a bit, but like, I grew my whole company outside of social media, like, completely outside of it.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't consider it a requirement whatsoever.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: But there's something that you mentioned to me before we started recording that I got to bring back up.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: So everybody can hear this part.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: But like, I utilized,
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: people I know, people who already knew me to a degree or liked me or trusted me or something.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like you had mentioned that, too.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe that's where you were going in your next thing here.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: But like, how can you utilize what you already have or who you already know even if you're kind of going to jump shit?
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I actually
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: When I was laid off and I talked to some of my closest friends, I would say at least five of them when they were asking me what my next move looked like.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: at least five were like, I hope you're becoming a coach.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you're going into like, boating.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you're going into executive coaching.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: So that was like a key for me where I was like, oh, I'm already kind of showing up as that for people.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I need them to articulate that somehow because that's credibility for me.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_01]: So they actually ended up being some of the people that I coached when I was in the program.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, hey, because you already feel like I show up this way, are you willing to be, you know,
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: pro bono coaching hours or can I coach you or do you know of someone who I can coach till I I started using those people that already recognized me as that type of a person to kind of be my referral system.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I used a lot of them for my hours.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: So when Laura says her hours to you need 500 coaching hours to get your PCC, that's your level to credential through the ICF.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: There are three levels.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: I am not against level three, but typically people want level two if you want to get into the world of corporate coaching, executive coaching, if you want the, you know,
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: respect behind your name to a degree level one is also okay.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's a great place to start.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_00]: You will need a hundred hours for that, but I think I've never seen anyone need a level three and over a level two and and you know, we've had people work at Apple Facebook.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, oh my god, I just like microsoft like a lot of big companies only require the level to so I'm just putting that out there if you're like what is she talking about you do need to have proof that you coach for 500 hours and of course we help you with that in training and Laura was saying she access her network I feel like we are very similar and I know I already said that but like how do you I first feel like most people that are still listening to this are the type of people that just like do not give a
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: you know what and they're like just go for it kind of people like I never when I started my business was like oh I don't really know I'm like skate I just like didn't
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: show up like that maybe because I was like delusional or just like I had been so fed up with my job that I had no other choice but like if someone is kind of let's be honest some people hate their job or don't like their boss or feel underutilized but they're like comfortable they're like comfortably discomfort or I don't know uncomfortable do you know what I'm saying?
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: I believe
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: that you don't leave until, like, if you're at that point, you don't leave until something bad happens.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: as in most things, right, right.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_00]: We don't almost like, God, can you please give me like more lessons through joy and then I'm like, stay way too long and places that I shouldn't stay, okay?
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: So totally normal, totally human, but if you're sitting here, like, I don't wanna be totally normal.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't wanna be totally human.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: What do you, like, how do you get people to move?
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: I guess that's what I feel like the most valuable thing you can say.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: what advice do you have for someone who's like comfortable at a job that they don't like?
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: Get your help, I heard.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just kidding.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: I do think to an extent, I mean, and I am one of those people too, where it really did take, I didn't like being uncomfortable because I always associated discomfort as
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: painful, you know, but discomfort is actually a big sign of growth.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I think when I started to see it is that, that's when I was like, oh, this is a good sign that you're feeling a little bit uncomfortable here because this means that you're ready to level up.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: And you've sat here for too long and I was definitely that person and still it's with a great.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: I find myself like I have to talk myself out of this mentality a lot and this is big for my coaching clients.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: um, but I was perpetually the girl that was like, oh my god, what's the worst that can happen?
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: But you're still, when you say that, you think it's putting yourself in a state of positivity, you're still imagining even those micro-negative possibilities, and, and that's still negative.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: So, and I would fix it on those.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, well, the worst thing that can happen is I can make no income.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: I could look like an idiot, and I would walk through like all the worst case scenarios, and it would keep me in the spot.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: I had a code say to me one time and it literally changed everything and now I say it to all of my clients, stop saying what's the worst that can happen and start saying what's the best that can happen.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_01]: Because that will immediately put you in a future state.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: This shows you possibility, rather than, well, this could, this negative thing could still happen, like it's not horrible, but like it still could happen.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: The second that I started saying to myself, what's the best that can happen?
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: All of the best things have happened.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: I kid you not in that time frame.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: Because I just said, you know, this could be amazing.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_01]: It could crash and burn but it could be amazing.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: And it has, I really like that because I often say, well, what's the worst that could happen?
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: It does come out of my mouth kind of on a regular basis.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now it will never again.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, although I sometimes think that that can be a helpful starting point for especially a new coaching client who's so good at saying everything they don't want, but has no clue what they do want.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, let's just dump it all out first.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: And then we'll fill the bucket up with what we like.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that's very helpful.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: After, I don't know, I'm going into my 13th year of business, I think.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: There's not, every year, I try to go through hundreds of student names and all this data and sure, sometimes there is like glaring data that says like, okay, you know, teachers or HR people excel in IGC, those are, those are couple true things, also social workers therapist.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: Those are easy.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: But what's not so easy is to try to figure out like,
- 26:05[SPEAKER_00]: mindfulness piece, but this mindset shift, if you will, I don't always know that from all of our students, but there are certain people that clearly have this why not me go big or go home mentality and they always make it because at the end of the day the only way to fail at a coaching
- 26:31[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's it.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: So I really do.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have to remind myself that.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you can, the only way to fail is to quit.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to say it.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's true, and I mean, I really think it was the second that I decided to be all in on it, because this is not one of those businesses that you can have like one toe in and kind of like, yes, you do it on the side, but you still have to be entirely in it.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: Just in most things, in relationships, in parenting, you cannot be a half parent, like it's not going to go well.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: You have to be all in on that.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I really did make that day that I was laid off.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: I had a out loud conversation with myself in front of the mirror.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, this is the last day that you're going to feel this way about yourself.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: And in order for this to change, you have to be all in on all of the things that you want.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: your life to look like.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: I just was thinking about this the other day because like something that I've always said is like take plan B off the table.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't mean that in a political sense boys and girls.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean your backup plan like it has to be out of the way because the more energy you feed into the backup plan, the less energy
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: you feed into plan A or your business or your dream or your vision, but it's also it's less even about like energy and it's more about like intention.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like whenever we're holding this intention of like going back to our old job or blah blah blah it just
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: It never allows you to go all in.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: It literally never, ever, ever allows you to go all in.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_00]: So the thing I would say play with here, if you're listening, is like, what would it actually look like for you to be all in?
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: And like, what can you do today to get there?
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: I also will say, we are all human having human experiences.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I know Laura will agree with me.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: There are days when you don't feel like it.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: There are still days when you're like, oh my god.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, I don't know what this whole thing is working.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: But if you think about it as like choosing all in on a daily basis for me, I feel like that has helped a lot at the beginning.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like it wasn't like, okay, I'm doing this for three years.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, no, I'm doing this full force today.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing this full force today again.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: And again and again and again, until full force is just your new normal.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually, something that worked really well for me and I do this now with every single one of my clients, just because I believe so deeply in the power of doing it, but my coach actually had me write a look back in tension letter, so I wrote a letter and we've all kind of done this, I think to some extent, I remember doing it for like a time capsule and elementary school, but it's a little different as an adult and it certainly hit me different as an adult.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: But I wrote a letter to myself and she's like, I want you to get really granular with this.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: I want you to tell me how things look, taste, smell, what you're feeling a year from now, and what will you have done a year from now?
- 29:38[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at this letter every day, and if it didn't align to what that letter had in it, I wasn't doing it.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't gonna consume my energy.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: And like things obviously pivot, you know, but mine pivoted in a good way.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think I started off with I want to have full full full one on one clients.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'm at eight like I doubled it.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to eventually start a podcast.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: I started one.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to maybe be a coach for Hopkins.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: That was like the first thing that happened.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: But it was really like starting to plant the seat of like, there is no backup plan.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_01]: This is the plan.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I talked about it every day to myself.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I did the same thing with my physical closet and I used that as an analogy too is like I had this closet that I put off for forever cleaning and I had things from I'm not kidding like fifth grade middle school college and all of those things were keeping me stuck I followed like three influencers and I was like, all right, I'm buying three outfits that I love that I feel really exude my style.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to hang them up at a wardrobe and
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: anything that doesn't match that energy anymore is gone.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it was the first time I cleaned my closet like that in literal years.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I feel like you need to like kick all of our butts.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: I am feeling very motivated.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: Like I need to also go run.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: I can't run away with that.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_00]: Let's be honest.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_00]: I can still fly also.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my goodness.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: You're like the coach everyone needs.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: This is crazy.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: I just to kind of like bring it all home.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: I need to just know.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think?
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: I already know you gave us what people can do, what the mindset shift is, but like,
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: If you are listening to this and you're feeling very discouraged and you're feeling like a loser or a failure or someone who starts and then quit stuff, what do you think someone should do first Laura?
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: Like just from your experience of ups and downs.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like is it just become a coach?
- 31:35[SPEAKER_00]: Is it higher a coach?
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: Is it like, what can someone actually do if they're feeling like loser?
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to say it.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_00]: But I felt like loser before.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: legitimately, I would consider hiring a coach.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I and I am not one to like Pupo on therapy.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_01]: Lord knows I've had therapists my entire life and I think there's a time at place for therapy.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it works really well in tandem with coaching.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: But it wasn't until I invested in a coach of my own.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: Where it was really more of that forward thinking versus like let's on hat like let's rehash like everything that's happened and let's unpack the why and like how could you be treated though I can't even that gives me like the heavy jubies at this point.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like kept me there kept me stuck in those moments.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: And there's certainly a time in place to kind of have some context as to why you are the way that you are and why you do things the way that you do.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_01]: But at some point, you need a way through.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: And for me, it was a coach.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: I was like bashing my head against the wall thinking like, how do I move forward?
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: My literally felt like my wheels were spinning.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it wasn't that I didn't have the answer.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, as well as I do, our clients that we coach have the answer.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: They need the reminder.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_01]: And it really was, it wasn't even just a reminder, but
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: I needed somebody to question me in a different way than I was questioning myself.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: There were a few really pivotal questions that my coach had asked me, and they weren't like earthshattering questions.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: It was just the way she asked them, I was like, oh my God, what is the best that could happen?
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and it changed everything.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: And there were a few times where she's like, okay, what if you did that and you didn't die?
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: What if that?
- 33:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, I think, and it changed everything.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: So I really do believe.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: Investing in a coach is one of the smartest things you can do.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: Whether you're considering being a coach or not, I think it makes so much sense to invest in why I don't know that.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why I had amnesia, but you're right.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_00]: I hired a coach before I started my business because I needed someone in my life who didn't just agree with me.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: you know, I can get a lot of people to agree with me.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like if I'm having a bad day, I'm going to convince you that it's warranted and that we're going to stay stuck.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like I'm very good at that.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: Very persuasive.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_00]: I needed someone to not be persuaded by my own BS.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm with you.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: I actually kind of forgot about that.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I had to have a coach too to push me to figure out what I even wanted, not to even figure it out, but to be okay with it except it and actually go for it.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: I needed the accountability, needed somebody to be like, hey, we talked about this last week.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: So what got in the way of you doing that?
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: Because you don't do that as much for yourself.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're going to yourself excuse yourself.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: I can talk myself into or out of literally anything in the record time.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well, this was really great.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like we just went through kind of like a mental workout in a good way.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like,
- 34:29[SPEAKER_00]: push you to your limits a little bit.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like if you need that level of accountability or building your mental toughness, which obviously any business owner does, I'm gonna leave all of Laura's info at the bottom.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: So you can reach her, you can connect with her.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: I know that she has picked other professionals brand, so perhaps she'd be open to sharing with you a little bit more if you're interested.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_00]: But executive coaching is one of the fastest growing niches in the coaching industry.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of the highest paid niches in the coaching industry.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: And Laura obviously went from
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: laid off to full force replaced corporate income in less than a year and I just don't know any other business where you can have that level of ROI that fast, literally none.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to leave all of lures info for you and I just want to thank you for letting us borrow your brain and your inspiration and motivation this afternoon.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_00]: If you like it's just the kind of kid we needed to kick off the year.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: I so enjoyed being here alive and I really am excited about anybody considering coaching and I'm not saying I'm positive things about this experience
- 35:42[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, thank you.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you're such a good, a good graduate.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're such a great success story.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_00]: And let's be honest, I love people who build their business over years.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: But I also love people who are just like all in from day one and they create success and record speed because not everyone, you know, has the luxury of not generating income right away.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you again for being here, Laura, and we will leave all of the notes below and we'll see you next time.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's great.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks, Bob.
