- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Tuesday.
- 0:15It is the 7th of May, so glad to have your company.
- 0:20Thank you for tapping on play and inviting me into your day.
- 0:23Your day that's probably getting chillier and chillier if you are
- 0:27in the same part of the world as me.
- 0:29Ohe, we've got these heaters that are very clever.
- 0:31They just sit quietly and then when it drops below a certain
- 0:34temperature during a certain time of the day, they just turn
- 0:37themselves on and take a chill out of the air.
- 0:40And we woke up the other morning to the strange smell of dust
- 0:44burning. They they are finally starting
- 0:47to turn back on again after the whole summer season where
- 0:49they've sat dormant. So that's how you know that it's
- 0:53starting to chill down oht you might be one of these gloriously
- 0:57lucky people on the other side of the world where you'll your
- 1:00world is warming up. Ah, how good is that?
- 1:04But I need to temper all of this and my love of warmth by my
- 1:07youngest, who said dad, I love winter.
- 1:10It is my favourite season of the year.
- 1:12So if you're a winter lover then boy, you are in the right place
- 1:16heading toward the greatest season, but not for me.
- 1:21But that's enough about me. We continue on this journey,
- 1:25hearing about what David is doing as he comes back to his
- 1:28throne in Jerusalem. And today he is going to take on
- 1:33that old foe, the Philistine army.
- 1:37That's right, they have not gone anywhere.
- 1:40So let us continue reading together.
- 1:42Holy Spirit, reveal yourself to us today.
- 1:46Open our hearts and our minds to you as we read this together.
- 1:53All right, friends, let us read together.
- 1:55Second Samuel, Chapter 21. There was a famine during
- 2:10David's reign that lasted for three years.
- 2:12So David asked the Lord about it, and the Lord said, the
- 2:16famine has come because Saul and his family are guilty of
- 2:21murdering the Gibeonites. So the king summoned the
- 2:25Gibeonites. They were not part of Israel,
- 2:28but were all that was left of the nation of the Amorites.
- 2:31The people of Israel had sworn not to kill them, but Saul, in
- 2:35his zeal for Israel and Judah, had tried to wipe them out.
- 2:39David asked them, what can I do for you?
- 2:42How can I make amends so that you will bless the Lord's people
- 2:45again? Well, money can't settle this
- 2:49matter between US and the family of Saul, the Gibeonites replied.
- 2:53Neither can we demand the life of anyone in Israel.
- 2:56Then what can I do then? David asked.
- 2:59Just tell me and I will do it for you.
- 3:02Then they replied, It was Saul who planned to destroy us, to
- 3:06keep us from having any place at all in the territory of Israel.
- 3:10So let 7 of Saul's sons be handed over to us, and we will
- 3:15execute them before the Lord at Gibeon on the mountain of the
- 3:18Lord. All right, the king said.
- 3:22I will do it. The king spared Jonathan's son
- 3:26Mephibosheth, who was Saul's grandson because of the oath
- 3:30David and Jonathan had sworn before the Lord.
- 3:33But he gave them souls, two sons, Armoni and Mephibosheth,
- 3:37whose mother was Rizpah, daughter of Aya.
- 3:41He also gave them the five sons of Saul's daughter Merab, the
- 3:45wife of Adriel, son of Barzilai from Mahola.
- 3:50The men of Gibeon executed them in the mountain before the Lord,
- 3:54so all seven of them died together at the beginning of the
- 3:57barley harvest. Then Rispa, daughter of Aya, the
- 4:02mother of two of the men, spread burlap on a rock and stayed
- 4:06there the entire harvest season. She prevented the scavenger
- 4:11birds from tearing at their bodies during the day and
- 4:14stopped wild animals from eating them at night.
- 4:17When David learned what Rispa SAWS concubine had done, he went
- 4:21to the people of Jabesh Gilead and retrieved the bones of Saul
- 4:26and his son Jonathan. When the Philistines had killed
- 4:29Saul and Jonathan on Mount Gilboa, the people of Jabesh
- 4:33Gilead stole their bodies from the public square at Bethshan
- 4:37where the Philistines had hung them.
- 4:39So David obtained the bones of Saul and Jonathan, as well as
- 4:43the bones of the men the Gibeonites had executed.
- 4:46Then the king ordered that they bury the bones and the tomb of
- 4:49Kish, Saul's father at the town of Zilla in the land of
- 4:54Benjamin. After that, God ended the famine
- 4:58in the land. Once again, the Philistines were
- 5:03at war with Israel, and when David and his men were in the
- 5:06thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted.
- 5:11Ishbi Benab was descendant of the giants.
- 5:14His bronze spearhead weighed more than 7 lbs and he was armed
- 5:18with a new sword. He had cornered David and was
- 5:22about to kill him. But Abishai, son of Zeruiah,
- 5:26came to David's rescue and killed the Philistine.
- 5:29Then David's men declared, you are not going out to battle with
- 5:33us again. Why risk snuffing out the Light
- 5:36of Israel after this? There was another battle against
- 5:41the Philistines at Gob. As they fought, Sipeki from
- 5:45Hashash killed Saf, another descendant of the giants.
- 5:50During another battle at Gob, Elhanan, son of Jaya from
- 5:54Bethlehem, killed the brother of Goliath of Gath.
- 5:58The handle of his spear was thicker than a weaver's beam.
- 6:02In another battle with the Philistines at Gaffe, they
- 6:05encountered a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six
- 6:09toes on each foot, 24 in all, who was also descended of the
- 6:13giants. But when he defied and taunted
- 6:17Israel, he was killed by Jonathan, the son of David's
- 6:21brother, Shemya. These four Philistines were
- 6:24descendants of the giants of Gath, but David and his warriors
- 6:28killed them. Lord has reread this chapter.
- 6:42We hear evidence that you do not forget those who are wrong,
- 6:48those who have been vulnerable and oppressed.
- 6:52But your heart bleeds for them, and you remember their anguish,
- 6:58and in the fullness of time you bring your justice.
- 7:04Ah, Lord, let us just lean into you and your provisions of
- 7:08justice. Help us not feel like we need to
- 7:12continually work to bring justice ourselves, but to know
- 7:16that your palette is so much broader and wider and longer and
- 7:22more creative than ours could ever be, and that in the
- 7:24fullness of your plans, you will make all things as they should
- 7:29be. So we surrender to you all of
- 7:33our own grievances, all of our own desires.
- 7:36We just place them on the throne of worship to You, our great and
- 7:42holy God. You know what's best, and you
- 7:47will bring all things together as they ought to be.
- 7:53So we just praise you and submit to you.
- 7:57As difficult and uncomfortable as that often may be for us,
- 8:02that is our prayer. All in the name of Jesus, Oh
- 8:07man.
