Speaker 1: Chapter thirty five in the Shark's Body, Pinocchio finds whom
• 0:03
Speaker 1: read this chapter, my children, and you will know Pinocchio.
• 0:07
Speaker 1: As soon as he had said goodbye to his friend,
• 0:09
Speaker 1: the tunny tottered away in the darkness and began to
• 0:12
Speaker 1: walk as well as he could toward the faint light
• 0:15
Speaker 1: which glowed in the distance. As he walked, his feet
• 0:17
Speaker 1: splashed in a pool of greasy and slippery water, which
• 0:21
Speaker 1: had such a heavy smell of fish fried in oil
• 0:23
Speaker 1: that Pinocchio thought it was lent. The farther on he went,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: the brighter and clearer grew the tiny light. On and
• 0:30
Speaker 1: on he walked, until finally he found I give you
• 0:33
Speaker 1: a thousand guesses, my dear children. He found a little
• 0:36
Speaker 1: table set for dinner and lighted by a candle stuck
• 0:39
Speaker 1: in a glass bottle, And near the table sat a
• 0:42
Speaker 1: little old man, white as snow, eating live fish. They wriggled,
• 0:46
Speaker 1: so that now and again one of them slipped out
• 0:49
Speaker 1: of the old man's mouth and escaped into the darkness
• 0:52
Speaker 1: under the table. At this sight, the poor Marionette was
• 0:55
Speaker 1: filled with such great and sudden happiness that he almost
• 0:58
Speaker 1: dropped in a faint. He wanted to laugh, He wanted
• 1:01
Speaker 1: to cry, He wanted to say a thousand and one things,
• 1:04
Speaker 1: but all he could do was to stand still, stuttering
• 1:07
Speaker 1: and stammering brokenly. At last, with a great effort, he
• 1:11
Speaker 1: was able to let out a scream of joy, and
• 1:14
Speaker 1: opening his arms, he threw them around the old man's neck. Oh, father,
• 1:19
Speaker 1: dear father, I have found you at last. Now I
• 1:22
Speaker 1: shall never never leave you again. Are my eyes telling
• 1:26
Speaker 1: me the truth? Answered the old man, rubbing his eyes.
• 1:29
Speaker 1: Are you really my own dear Pinocchio? Yes, yes, yes
• 1:34
Speaker 1: it is. I look at me, and you have forgotten me,
• 1:37
Speaker 1: haven't you. Oh, my dear father, how good you are?
• 1:41
Speaker 1: And to think that I oh, but if you only
• 1:44
Speaker 1: knew how many misfortunes have fallen on my head and
• 1:48
Speaker 1: how many troubles I have had. Just think that. On
• 1:51
Speaker 1: the day you sold your old coat to buy me
• 1:54
  Speaker 1: my A B. C. Book so that I could go
• 1:56
Speaker 1: to school, I ran away to the Marionette theater, and
• 1:59
Speaker 1: the propos caught me and wanted to burn me to
• 2:02
Speaker 1: cook his roast. Lamb. He was the one who gave
• 2:05
Speaker 1: me the five gold pieces for you. But I met
• 2:08
Speaker 1: the fox and the cat who took me to the
• 2:10
Speaker 1: inn of the Red Lobster. There they ate like wolves,
• 2:13
Speaker 1: and I left the inn alone, and I met the
• 2:16
Speaker 1: assassins in the wood. I ran, and they ran after me,
• 2:19
Speaker 1: always after me, till they hanged me on the branch
• 2:22
Speaker 1: of a giant oak tree. Then the Fairy of the
• 2:25
Speaker 1: Azure Hair sent the coach to rescue me, and the
• 2:28
Speaker 1: doctors looking after me said, if he's not dead, then
• 2:32
Speaker 1: he's surely alive. And then I told a lie, and
• 2:34
Speaker 1: my nose began to grow, and it grew, and it
• 2:37
Speaker 1: grew till I couldn't get it through the door of
• 2:39
Speaker 1: the room. And then I went to the Fox and
• 2:41
Speaker 1: the cat in the fields of Wonder to bury the
• 2:44
Speaker 1: gold pieces. The parrot laughed at me, and instead of
• 2:47
Speaker 1: two thousand gold pieces, I found one. When the judge
• 2:50
Speaker 1: heard that I had been robbed, he sent me to
• 2:52
Speaker 1: jail to make the thieves happy. And when I came away,
• 2:56
Speaker 1: I saw a fine bunch of grapes hanging on a vine.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: The trap caught me, and the farmer put a collar
• 3:01
Speaker 1: on me and made me a watchdog. He found out
• 3:04
Speaker 1: I was innocent when I caught the weasels, and he'd
• 3:07
Speaker 1: let me go. The serpent with the tail that smoked
• 3:10
Speaker 1: started to laugh, and in vain his chest broke, and
• 3:13
Speaker 1: so I went back to the fairy's house. She was dead.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: And the pigeon, seeing me crying, said to me, I've
• 3:20
Speaker 1: seen your father building a boat to look for you
• 3:23
Speaker 1: in America. And I said to him, oh, if I
• 3:26
Speaker 1: only had wings, And he said to me, do you
• 3:29
Speaker 1: want to go to your father? And I said perhaps,
• 3:31
Speaker 1: but how? And he said, get on my back and
• 3:34
Speaker 1: I'll take you there. We flew all night long, and
• 3:37
Speaker 1: the next morning the fishermen were looking toward the sea, crying,
• 3:40
Speaker 1: there's a poor little man drownding. And I knew it
• 3:42
Speaker 1: was you, because my heart told me so, and I
• 3:45
Speaker 1: waved you from the shore. I knew you also put
• 3:49
Speaker 1: in geppetto. I wanted to go to you, but how
• 3:52
Speaker 1: could I. The sea was rough, and the white caps
• 3:54
Speaker 1: overturned the boat. When a terrible shark came up out
• 3:57
Speaker 1: of the sea, and as soon as he saw me
• 4:00
Speaker 1: in the water, swam quickly toward me, put out his
• 4:02
Speaker 1: tongue and swallowed me as easily as if I had
• 4:05
Speaker 1: been a chocolate peppermint. And how long have you been
• 4:08
Speaker 1: shut away in here from that day to this two long,
• 4:12
Speaker 1: weary years, two years, my Pinocchio, which have been like
• 4:16
Speaker 1: two centuries? And how have you lived? Where did you
• 4:19
Speaker 1: find the candle and the matches with which to light it?
• 4:22
Speaker 1: Where did you get them? You must know that in
• 4:24
Speaker 1: a storm which swamped my boat, a large ship also
• 4:28
Speaker 1: suffered the same fate. The sailors were all saved, but
• 4:31
Speaker 1: the ship went right to the bottom of the sea,
• 4:34
Speaker 1: and the same terrible shark that swallowed me swallowed most
• 4:38
Speaker 1: of it. What swallowed a ship? Asked Pinocchio in astonishment.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: At one gulp. The only thing he spat out was
• 4:45
Speaker 1: the main mast, for it stuck into his teeth. To
• 4:48
Speaker 1: my own good luck, that ship was loaded with meat,
• 4:51
Speaker 1: preserved food, crackers, breads, bottles of wine, raisins, cheese, coffee, sugar, wax, candles,
• 4:59
Speaker 1: and boxes of matches. With all of these blessings, I
• 5:02
Speaker 1: have been able to live happily on for two whole years.
• 5:05
Speaker 1: But now I am at the very last crumbs. Today
• 5:08
Speaker 1: there is nothing left in the cupboard, and this candle
• 5:11
Speaker 1: you see here is the last one I have. And
• 5:14
Speaker 1: then and then, my dear, we'll find ourselves in darkness. Then,
• 5:18
Speaker 1: my dear father, said Pinocchio. There's no time to lose.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: We must try to escape. Escape how we can run
• 5:26
Speaker 1: out of the shark's mouth and dive into the sea.
• 5:29
Speaker 1: You speak well, but I cannot swim, my dear Pinocchio,
• 5:32
Speaker 1: Why should that matter? You can climb on my shoulders,
• 5:35
Speaker 1: and I, who am a fine swimmer, will carry you
• 5:37
Speaker 1: safely to the shore. Dreams my boy, answered geppetto, shaking
• 5:41
Speaker 1: his head and smiling sadly. Do you think it is
• 5:44
Speaker 1: possible for a marionette a yard high to have the
• 5:47
Speaker 1: strength to carry me on his shoulders and swim? Try
• 5:50
Speaker 1: it and see? And in any case, if it is
• 5:52
Speaker 1: written that we must die, we shall at least die together.
• 5:55
Speaker 1: Not adding another word, Pinocchio took the candle in his hand,
• 5:58
Speaker 1: and going ahead to light the way, he said to
• 6:00
Speaker 1: his father, follow me, and have no fear. They walked
• 6:04
Speaker 1: a long distance through the stomach and the whole body
• 6:06
Speaker 1: of the shark. When they reached the throat of the monster,
• 6:09
Speaker 1: they stopped for a while to wait for the right
• 6:11
Speaker 1: moment in which to make their escape. I want you
• 6:13
Speaker 1: to know that the shark, being very old and suffering
• 6:16
Speaker 1: from asthma and heart trouble was obliged to sleep with
• 6:19
Speaker 1: his mouth open. Because of this, Pinocchio was able to
• 6:22
Speaker 1: catch a glimpse of the sky filled with stars as
• 6:24
Speaker 1: he looked up through the open jaws of his new home.
• 6:27
Speaker 1: The time has come for us to escape, he whispered,
• 6:29
Speaker 1: turning to his father. The shark is fast asleep, the
• 6:32
Speaker 1: sea is calm, and the night is as bright as day.
• 6:35
Speaker 1: Follow me closely, dear father, and we shall soon be saved.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: No sooner than done. They climbed up the throat of
• 6:41
Speaker 1: the monster till they came to that immense open mouth.
• 6:44
Speaker 1: There they had to walk on tiptoes, for if they
• 6:47
Speaker 1: tickled the shark's long tongue, he might awaken. And where
• 6:50
Speaker 1: would they be then? The tongue was so wide and
• 6:52
Speaker 1: so long that it looked like a country road. The
• 6:55
Speaker 1: two fugitives were just about to dive into the sea
• 6:58
Speaker 1: when the sharks sneezed, and very so suddenly as he sneezed,
• 7:01
Speaker 1: he gave Pinocchio and Geppetto such a jolt that they
• 7:04
Speaker 1: found themselves thrown on their backs, and dashed once more,
• 7:07
Speaker 1: very unceremoniously, into the stomach of the monster, to make
• 7:11
Speaker 1: matters worse. The candle went out, and father and son
• 7:14
Speaker 1: were left in the dark. And now asked Pinocchio with
• 7:17
Speaker 1: a serious face, now we are lost. Why lost? Give
• 7:21
Speaker 1: me your hand, dear father, and be careful not to slip.
• 7:24
Speaker 1: Where will you take me? We must try again. Come
• 7:27
Speaker 1: with me, and don't be afraid. With these words, Pinocchio
• 7:30
Speaker 1: took his father by the hand, and, always walking on tiptoes,
• 7:34
Speaker 1: they climbed up the monster's throat for a second time,
• 7:36
Speaker 1: and then they crossed the whole tongue and jumped over
• 7:39
Speaker 1: three rows of teeth. But before they took the last
• 7:41
Speaker 1: great leap, the marionette said to his father, climb on
• 7:44
Speaker 1: my back and hold on tight to my neck. I'll
• 7:47
Speaker 1: take care of everything else. As soon as Geppetto was
• 7:49
Speaker 1: comfortably seated on his shoulders, Pinocchio, very sure of what
• 7:53
Speaker 1: he was doing, dived into the water and started to swim.
• 7:56
Speaker 1: The sea was like oil, The moon shone in all splendor,
• 7:59
Speaker 1: and the sh shark continued to sleep so soundly that
• 8:02
Speaker 1: not even a cannon shot would have awakened him. End
• 8:05
