Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / NASCAR Explains Why Kyle Larson Got a Waiver
Transcript
- 0:00Obviously you know a lot going on in the last week around the
- 0:03waiver for Kyle. We didn't take that lightly.
- 0:07A lot of discussion internally. I'm proud of our team and and
- 0:12how we took the due diligence to work through this process, but
- 0:15ultimately landed at giving Kyle a waiver so he'll be eligible
- 0:20for the playoffs going forward. And essentially our decision
- 0:24making was, although we had the inclement weather in, in Indy as
- 0:29well that Charlotte Kyle made every attempt to get to
- 0:32Charlotte. He was standing in the pit box
- 0:35with his helmet on ready to go. And unfortunately we had weather
- 0:40in Charlotte as well and we weren't fortunate enough to get
- 0:43the race going again. So that's how we landed at our
- 0:48decision. As we went through this process.
- 0:51You look at the waiver, this was without a doubt uncharted
- 0:56waters. In the past, those waivers have
- 1:00been given mostly for medical reasons or situations where
- 1:04drivers were suspended from our event.
- 1:08And those waivers were granted fairly quickly.
- 1:12This one again, was unprecedented in the fact that
- 1:15we had a a driver missile one of our races, one of our
- 1:20corporations, A championship event to be at another event.
- 1:25So that's why it took as long as it did.
- 1:29I'm proud of our process. I'm I'm proud of the team here
- 1:32at the at NASCAR and the way we work through that.
- 1:35And we felt like that the time that it took, you know, roughly
- 1:39a week was exactly what we needed to get to the right
- 1:42decision. Just a question, kind of a
- 1:45two-part question #1 would you consider this a close call in
- 1:49any way? And as kind of a follow up, the
- 1:52reason I asked that is you have, in fairness, granted far more
- 1:58waivers than you guys have denied in the past.
- 2:03And some could even say that you kind of facilitated Kyle's
- 2:08efforts. I mean, there was the movement
- 2:10of the start time of the All Star race and so forth.
- 2:13And I just wondered, when it came down to the nuts and bolts,
- 2:17what's this really a a close decision?
- 2:20Well, I think it's, it's done. It was in uncharted waters, as I
- 2:24said earlier. So the decision making process,
- 2:28you know, it took the time it did to make sure that we, we got
- 2:31this right. And as I hit on the earlier,
- 2:34the, the, the reason the waivers in place or one of the reasons
- 2:38it's in place is to give our fans some certainty that if they
- 2:43buy a ticket, come and watch our athletes and our stars perform,
- 2:48that they're going to see them. So the, the prior precedent that
- 2:53was set with allowing waivers, you know, those, those real
- 2:58quick decisions. As I said earlier, this one was
- 3:00unique in the fact that obviously Kyle raced in a with
- 3:06another series and wasn't there to start our event.
- 3:12As far as it being close, I don't know.
- 3:14There was different views from different people, which I,
- 3:18again, I commend our process, proud of our team and everyone
- 3:23had a view on it and the ultimate decision that we want
- 3:27to get to was the right decision and we feel like we got there.
- 3:31We're looking forward to getting to Atlanta, just kick our
- 3:36playoffs and have one of the the sport's biggest stars contending
- 3:42for a championship. And just one, one quick follow
- 3:46up. Do you think that anything that
- 3:49resulted out of today would have you relook at your waiver rules
- 3:53in the future? I don't think so.
- 3:56You know, we, we will in the offseason like we always do with
- 3:59rules, we'll revisit. But the rule book is very clear.
- 4:03You either grant the waiver or you don't.
- 4:06Anything in between that would have been not really followed by
- 4:11our rule books. And and as we said before,
- 4:13that's that's a guideline for us to look at.
- 4:17Again, we didn't take this lightly.
- 4:18That's why it took the time to get to the decision that we did.
- 4:22But this one was unique. We'll continue to look at it.
- 4:28A lot of things that we learned from this process.
- 4:31I do want to say that I want to commend the team at at Hendrick
- 4:37Motorsports, Jeff Andrews working very closely with them
- 4:41on the the timelines to the All Star race.
- 4:45All the collaboration was really good.
- 4:48At no point did we before 620 issue on Sunday night.
- 4:55The green flag drop in at the 600 was anyone led to believe
- 4:59that they 100% would get a waiver?
- 5:03And you can't make that decision prior to you got to let the the
- 5:07event unfold, let the process take its course.
- 5:09And that's exactly what we did. We felt like we the double is
- 5:14great. It's great for Motorsports, it's
- 5:16great for NASCAR. We we were all looking forward
- 5:21to having Pile land in the ball field there at Charlotte, get
- 5:24out of a helicopter, go get in his car and hopefully, you know,
- 5:29compete and and complete the 1100 miles.
- 5:33But that didn't that didn't work out that way.
- 5:35That didn't unfold for the obvious reasons that we know
- 5:38about. I mean.
- 5:39Weather isn't a surprise, so why couldn't that decision have been
- 5:42made before? Like it's, it seems pretty
- 5:45simple. If weather happens, what's
- 5:47what's going to be the decision? Well, I think by if you look at
- 5:51it again, you let the process unfold.
- 5:53You know, we didn't, there wasn't a, a waiver needed prior
- 5:58to again 622 green flag Sunday night in Charlotte.
- 6:02So a lot of that is hypotheticals.
- 6:04What if this, what if that we had gone through some of them.
- 6:08But again, you let the process take its course.
- 6:11A lot of things could have happened in between whether this
- 6:14happened to be the one that was in, you know, in front of us on
- 6:19this particular situation. So at no point would we grant
- 6:24any waivers prior to that. That would not have been the
- 6:28process. And do you feel like, and you
- 6:31know, have you set a precedent that if you know somebody is at
- 6:34another event and and they make an effort to come back to get to
- 6:39your race, that that will be enough to get a waiver?
- 6:42Or is is the Indy 500 a a different circumstance than
- 6:48other events? I think you hit the nails on the
- 6:51head there, Bob. I mean, you, you know, Indy is a
- 6:53big race. Obviously the coach 600 is a
- 6:56huge race for us as well. But if they can be looking
- 7:00Motorsports in general, the Indy 500 is a, you know, it's a big
- 7:04event. We we embrace the double.
- 7:07We we think it's great. We want to see other drivers,
- 7:11you know, have that opportunity. So we have to, you know, just
- 7:16make sure that we're looking out first and foremost for the fans
- 7:19that again, buy the ticket that we're here in Charlotte.
- 7:23And it felt like Kyle get and the team gave every effort to be
- 7:27able to get here and he was ready to go and had his helmet
- 7:30on. And unfortunately we're not able
- 7:33to get going and getting back in the car.
- 7:35So again, I know it's a little bit of a cliche, but every
- 7:39situation is different and I feel like that we have the
- 7:42parameters in our rule book and the team here at the R&D center
- 7:47to ultimately make the best decision and that's what we were
- 7:51were hired to do. Hey, Elton, A a couple of things
- 7:55At the end of the day, why didn't you guys deny it?
- 7:58I mean, it it the way the rule book is written and obviously I
- 8:00know it's, you know, you guys can make that call.
- 8:02But he missed the start of the race.
- 8:05And they had said ahead of time the 600 was the priority they
- 8:09had. They had told everybody that
- 8:11that's what the priority was. They, I'm guessing, LED you guys
- 8:14to believe the 600 was the priority.
- 8:15And then suddenly they don't show up on the green flag falls.
- 8:18Why should you guys bail them out?
- 8:22I, I think that's a great question, Dustin.
- 8:25I would look at it is the the game was we went into that
- 8:29weekend, all communication with HMS was that was their priority.
- 8:33That was their day job. And unfortunately the weather
- 8:38situation threw them a curveball through the industry, a
- 8:40curveball and something that we had to to deal with.
- 8:43But ultimately the effort that they made without the weather,
- 8:49they're they're going to be there.
- 8:50We feel confident that was going to happen.
- 8:54To not have Kyle Larson in our playoff and give our fans the
- 8:58opportunity to see him race for a championship and compete
- 9:03against some of the best drivers in the world.
- 9:05At the end of the day didn't feel like that's the right
- 9:07decision for us to make and and we didn't.
- 9:11We felt like we got to the right spot.
- 9:15And also one other thing Elton, is was there a consideration to
- 9:19penalizing the team, whether some playoff points or something
- 9:23like that? Because I mean, like you guys
- 9:26can do whatever you want, but to kind of get the message across,
- 9:29hey, you know, we're going to grant you the waiver.
- 9:31We don't appreciate how things were done in in one sense.
- 9:36And so you're going to get it, but you're going to, you're
- 9:38going to pay a penalty for for this unique circumstance.
- 9:44Again, everything was on the table, but if you look at the
- 9:47rule book, the two options were granted or not to grant it and
- 9:52anything in between that or outside of that would have been
- 9:55us digging deep into the rule book to do something that
- 9:59didn't. It just didn't feel right to do
- 10:01that. So again, every effort was made
- 10:05to with all good intentions. Again, I go back to this like
- 10:09all of our fans were looking forward to to seeing Kyle
- 10:12compete in in both the the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 and and
- 10:17that didn't work out. Hey Ellen, you've mentioned that
- 10:21every effort was made and he was on pit Rd. with his helmet on
- 10:25ready to get in. Even though the rule is to be
- 10:29there for the start of the race, do you think that this is a
- 10:31quicker or easier call if the race gets back going and he
- 10:35races in the 600? Not really.
- 10:39I, I don't think so. I think, you know, we had no
- 10:42control over the weather. We're an outdoor sport.
- 10:45So the way that unfolded, you know, you once they didn't start
- 10:51the race, you know, some decisions obviously were made on
- 10:54their side. If you want to look at it, that
- 10:57there was some penalty. There was there was an
- 11:00opportunity there for for the five car and Kyle to gain, you
- 11:05know, roughly eight playoff points by winning the race and
- 11:07winning each stage and also padding his point lead in the
- 11:12regular season that would ultimately getting 15 additional
- 11:16points. So you you know, it time will
- 11:19tell if those potential 23 points that were, you know, on
- 11:24the table that he didn't get how that will unfold as we go
- 11:28through the playoffs. So there was, you know, a point
- 11:31penalty for him and we don't feel like from our side that
- 11:35that any other additional penalty or any type of asterisk
- 11:39beside it would have been the right, right way moving forward.
- 11:43And did Hendrick at all ask on that Sunday when the decision
- 11:47was being made that it was clear that he was going to miss the
- 11:49race? Did they did they reflect the
- 11:52waiver at that point or ask what the decision might be before
- 11:55that decision was officially made?
- 11:57No, we didn't. Again, those decisions and I
- 12:00keep going back to this because they could have you could ask
- 12:03right up until 6:00 before we went green at Charlotte, but
- 12:08they just the answer would have been the same thing.
- 12:10You got to let the, you know, let the process unfold the
- 12:13situation, you know, likely wouldn't have changed just due
- 12:17to the timing and being able to get there.
- 12:19But until we went green and he wasn't in the five car from that
- 12:23point forward, you start working through, you know, the waiver
- 12:26process. So again, I'm, I'm really proud
- 12:30of our team here at, at, at NASCAR.
- 12:33And this was a NASCAR decision and one that wasn't taken
- 12:36lightly as as I said earlier, and, but ultimately we felt like
- 12:41we got to the right decision, the best decision for our fans
- 12:45and, and ultimately they're ones that, you know, pay all of our
- 12:49bills. Elton, thanks for jumping on
- 12:51with us. I, I know this, it's, it's hard
- 12:53to, to, to, to jump in this pool as the decision that the longer
- 12:59it took to make this decision, the more noise was coming out.
- 13:03And yes, the fans pay our bills, but man, these guys make a lot
- 13:06of noise. There was conspiracy theories
- 13:09and all the reasons that we were waiting for this.
- 13:11How hard was it to tune out that noise?
- 13:13And I'll have a quick follow up. It wasn't really difficult,
- 13:18Greg, to be honest with you. I mean I again, I commend you
- 13:22know John Propst and his leadership here at the at the
- 13:26R&D center and we just we stayed the course.
- 13:28We had our internal meetings, we have more internal meetings.
- 13:33We continue to have dialogue around it.
- 13:35And then the other part of it is we're, we're in front of us was
- 13:40a race at Worldwide Technology Raceway that we're all getting
- 13:43prepared for. So, but again, the number one
- 13:47thing was to get to the right decision, take the time.
- 13:50It felt like the time that it took was the right amount of
- 13:53time to get to the right decision.
- 13:56And just to confirm, you're not going to change the rules about
- 13:59these waivers, but it's still going to be sort of a case by
- 14:02case basis. I mean, injuries are going to be
- 14:04almost no brainers And then but when you have something come up
- 14:07like this, it's going to be more of like a, a case by case basis.
- 14:11Well, what I would say, Greg, is that we're going to look at it,
- 14:14take a deeper dive, but as we sit here today, we feel like we
- 14:17have, you know, language in the rule book that would support
- 14:20obviously given the waiver and and be not given the waiver.
- 14:23So it's in the rule book. Is there something we feel like
- 14:27and what we've learned from this process that we need to, you
- 14:30know, add some language or delete some language, you know,
- 14:32we'll do that. But as we sit here today, you
- 14:35know that that's, we don't feel like we need to do anything at
- 14:38the moment. But again, there's a long list
- 14:41of rules that as you go through the season, we talked about,
- 14:46we'll put them on the kind of the the agenda for the offseason
- 14:50and we'll we'll do that with this one as well.
- 14:52And it's been a great season so far.
- 14:54Thank you, Sir. Absolutely phenomenal.
- 14:56I mean we, yes, absolutely. And then we'll wrap with Daniel
- 15:03Trotta. Go ahead, Daniel.
- 15:05Hi, Alvin. Thanks for the time.
- 15:07We're about to hop on, Sirius. So if you could just indulge and
- 15:11help me a little bit with some of the calls I think we'll
- 15:13receive from drivers that have been on the show, Fans that were
- 15:19adamant Larson should not get a waiver.
- 15:21Their one sticking point is that he made a choice that he chose
- 15:27to be in Indianapolis and he missed the start of Charlotte.
- 15:29Could you help me as to an answer from NASCAR's point on
- 15:32that question? Yeah, that's a great question,
- 15:35Danielle. And I think, I think again as
- 15:36you go through the process, they, they did make a choice.
- 15:40I think you look at again as I hit on early, there was a choice
- 15:44to leave some points on the table that they they made that
- 15:49decision to stay in Indy. We wish that they would have
- 15:55been in Charlotte, but we understood and why that decision
- 15:58was made. And ultimately, at the end of
- 16:00the day, I would I keep going back to this, but this is the
- 16:04the path that that we were on. Ultimately, he got to Charlotte
- 16:09was ready to go would have, you know, raised 151 laps or so.
- 16:14They are to conclude the Coach 600 and we felt like that they
- 16:20gave the best effort to do, you know what we needed to do for
- 16:24our fans in Charlotte. NASCAR has granted Kyle Larson
- 16:31the waiver. Oh, hold on.
- 16:36Hey, Wallace, what you doing patting yourself on the back?
- 16:40Well, absolutely. We all knew they would.
- 16:46You know, we took a lot of polls and it was like 87, almost 90%
- 16:53of the people. And these were good polls.
- 16:54These were like the 7000 people you, you can't have NASCAR
- 17:00looked at all that you can't look at social media and these
- 17:04polls that everybody was taking in, in my, my poll is the best
- 17:09because I say so. And you can't have almost 90% of
- 17:13the people and all the athletes in the world and you know,
- 17:17people from Chevrolet and too many people, you know, I, I hear
- 17:24you. I hear some of you negative
- 17:25Nellies out there. He chose to go there.
- 17:28But it that falls underneath brother Rusty saying, look,
- 17:33you're thinking wrong. Hey, Rusty taught me that
- 17:37growing up. He goes, Herm, you ain't
- 17:38thinking right. I was like a dog with rabbit
- 17:41ears on. I was like, what?
- 17:43I never heard of that before. So, yeah, it's true.
- 17:46You can be. It's not even a disagreement.
- 17:48It's you're thinking wrong. Your your thought process is way
- 17:52off. So Kyle Larson deserved the
- 17:55waiver. He got it.
- 17:57And now we move on. There's it's over.
- 17:59So hold on, what do you think? I think he did too.
- 18:06How come? He's put a.
- 18:09Lot into the. Sport, he he deserves it.
- 18:12Absolutely. She's way more mature than me.
- 18:15You heard it from the boss, all right.
