Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: 106.7 Light FM, Cubby and Christine in the morning along
- 0:03Speaker 1: with producer Kristen. Well, since we announced he was going
- 0:05Speaker 1: to be here a few days ago, I can't tell
- 0:07Speaker 1: you the amount of texting we've gotten of people so
- 0:09Speaker 1: excited about this.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Oh, yes. We have live in studio A.J. McClain of
- 0:13Speaker 2: the Backstreet Boys. Hello.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Good morning. Morgan.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I did. Yes. And you said that this was the
- 0:20Speaker 2: latest you've slept in a long time.
- 0:21Speaker 4: This was, yeah, this was the first time since probably...
- 0:27Speaker 4: Beginning of September that I actually got a full eight
- 0:31Speaker 4: hours of sleep, which I desperately needed.
- 0:34Speaker 3: We caught you on a good day.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:37Speaker 4: I mean, so we finished our residency in Vegas, or
- 0:41Speaker 4: at least this leg, end of August.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I had three days off. I came here.
- 0:48Speaker 4: My family just moved here. We're renting a place for
- 0:51Speaker 4: the next year for my daughters to go to a
- 0:53Speaker 4: really cool dance school out here.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Nice. And they would.
- 0:56Speaker 4: move here yesterday if they had their way. And so
- 1:00Speaker 4: I came here for a couple of days, went straight
- 1:03Speaker 4: to London. We went into rehearsals for two weeks and
- 1:06Speaker 4: then started the tens, the, the 10 stadiums that we
- 1:09Speaker 4: just did over in Germany. And then I flew home
- 1:12Speaker 4: on October 8th, back to LA two days off rehearsals
- 1:16Speaker 4: from my tour. and then started my tour.
- 1:19Speaker 3: On the 19th. Oh, my goodness.
- 1:21Speaker 2: How do you remember all this?
- 1:22Speaker 4: You know, my best friend says the same thing to me.
- 1:25Speaker 4: He's like, you don't write anything down. But if you
- 1:29Speaker 4: think about it, I have all our songs in our head,
- 1:31Speaker 4: all of our choreography in our head for the last
- 1:33Speaker 4: three decades.
- 1:35Speaker 3: It's starting to fall out of my brain, though.
- 1:37Speaker 4: I'm starting to double book myself for things, and I
- 1:40Speaker 4: just interviewed a potential assistant. I never thought I would
- 1:45Speaker 4: ever need an assistant, but it's starting to get to
- 1:47Speaker 4: that point where I'm like, I might need some help.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I understand that.
- 1:51Speaker 4: We're not even as crazy as you are, but I
- 1:53Speaker 4: think we could all use a personal assistant.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I'm just like, I might need to break down.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I think you do. Well, we're so happy for you.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Your new sophomore solo album called Sex, Love, and Music
- 2:03Speaker 1: is coming out Black Friday.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So a little over a month from now, but you're
- 2:07Speaker 1: out there promoting it. You've got some local shows happening
- 2:09Speaker 1: in our area, right?
- 2:10Speaker 4: Yes, yes. I kick things off in Brooklyn. I just
- 2:14Speaker 4: did Rhode Island a couple days ago, and then we've
- 2:16Speaker 4: got Montclair. Yes. And Huntington coming up this weekend. And
- 2:21Speaker 4: then off to North Carolina. And then I have a
- 2:23Speaker 4: bit of a break. And then we really pick up
- 2:26Speaker 4: in Boston on the 3rd of November. And then it's
- 2:31Speaker 4: like really tour tour. Like this has been do a show,
- 2:35Speaker 4: come back to my house here in the city. You know,
- 2:38Speaker 4: that kind of thing. So it's not really on tour
- 2:40Speaker 4: in my mind yet, but once Boston starts, it's on
- 2:43Speaker 4: the bus. Right. It's back on a proper tour, which
- 2:46Speaker 4: I haven't been on a tour since DNA.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Wow, that long. This is nice.
- 2:51Speaker 4: It's a little breath of fresh air to be back
- 2:53Speaker 4: on a tour bus, even though I like being in
- 2:54Speaker 4: one place in Vegas.
- 2:55Speaker 3: It's nice.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But I kind of miss being on a bus. Oh,
- 3:00Speaker 3: that's funny. A lot of musicians are like, no more bus.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I don't think we'll ever do another
- 3:08Speaker 4: proper tour tour, maybe ever again, knowing that we can
- 3:13Speaker 4: do these little mini residencies. Like we have 12 stadiums
- 3:16Speaker 4: coming up in Toronto in February.
- 3:19Speaker 3: And then, you know, Vegas, everybody comes out to one location.
- 3:23Speaker 4: So it's kind of nice to post up and actually
- 3:26Speaker 4: put your clothes in drawers and hang things up.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It's kind of it's kind of it's kind of nice.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I want to play your new song, actually, and then
- 3:32Speaker 1: I have a bone to pick with you after we
- 3:33Speaker 1: play that new song.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Okay, pick that bone.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But this first song I want to play is your
- 3:38Speaker 1: new single, Into Your Heart. Now, it's only two minutes
- 3:41Speaker 1: and 25 seconds. It's an awfully short song. Is that
- 3:44Speaker 1: just the way things are these days?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's funny.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And was it a TikTok world?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean, it's interesting.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Probably about five or six years ago, I heard from
- 3:54Speaker 4: a couple of producer friends of mine that, like, the
- 3:57Speaker 4: sweet spot is 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 4:00Speaker 4: And, you know, my generation, it was 3 minutes and
- 4:04Speaker 4: 30 seconds. That's the radio edit, right?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Right, that's what I know, yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 3: But songs actually, I think one.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Of the first artists to do 2 minutes and 45
- 4:12Speaker 4: seconds was actually Spice Girls, Wannabe.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Wannabe, you're correct.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And.
- 4:16Speaker 4: They did that on purpose because it was so short
- 4:19Speaker 4: but just long enough that it made you want to
- 4:20Speaker 4: hear it immediately again. So that's the little sweet spot
- 4:24Speaker 4: is that 225 to 245, it makes you want to
- 4:29Speaker 4: just put it on repeat constantly. And, you know, sometimes
- 4:33Speaker 4: the attention span these days, if you go too long...
- 4:35Speaker 4: they kind of skipped to the next track.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we've heard that before here at meetings. Don't go
- 4:41Speaker 2: too long.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I don't want anybody skipping anything on this album. I
- 4:43Speaker 3: want you to listen to everything all the way through.
- 4:45Speaker 2: All right, so let's play it. It's called Into Your Heart.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And you wrote it.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Yeah, me and my amazing writers, you know, Jeremy and
- 4:53Speaker 4: my buddy Ian, we put this song together and it
- 4:57Speaker 4: was kind of just a fluke. This was supposed to
- 5:00Speaker 4: be a bonus track that I was going to re-release
- 5:04Speaker 4: my first album.
- 5:05Speaker 3: My name is Alexander James.
- 5:07Speaker 4: I was going to put this song on as a
- 5:08Speaker 4: bonus track, and then one song turned into now 16
- 5:12Speaker 4: songs and turned into a full album, which is why
- 5:14Speaker 4: we have Sex, Love, and Music coming out on Black Friday.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Check it out. You ready?
- 5:19Speaker 3: Let's do it.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Into Your Heart, A.J. McClain on Light FM. Yeah, A.J.
- 5:24Speaker 2: McClain in the background, boys. He's solo, though. That's the
- 5:26Speaker 2: way to start the morning. Oh, yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 1: It's Into Your Heart on 106.7 Light FM. Great song, man.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Thank you, man. Thank you.
- 5:33Speaker 2: And again, short, but yeah, you want to hear it again.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, see? There's a little recipe for my, you know, yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 2: All right, now time to pick my bone here with AJ.
- 5:42Speaker 3: All right, pick that bone, bro.
- 5:43Speaker 2: What is up, Cubby?
- 5:44Speaker 1: For 20 years, we've had a running joke about getting
- 5:46Speaker 1: tattoos together. I have no tattoos, but of course, AJ
- 5:50Speaker 1: has a ton. And our good friend JoJo at iHeartRadio
- 5:53Speaker 1: in Los Angeles has a bunch of tattoos.
- 5:55Speaker 2: So, you know, we did the round the world trip
- 5:57Speaker 2: back in 2000.
- 5:58Speaker 3: We all bonded.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys go way back.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah. We had a joke like one day we're all
- 6:02Speaker 2: going to do tattoos together. Yep.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Lo and behold, I'm on Instagram live watching people and
- 6:07Speaker 1: I stumbled across Jojo and AJ getting tattoos together in
- 6:12Speaker 1: Los Angeles.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Without me. Are you okay?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Are you okay?
- 6:18Speaker 2: I felt like I was back in junior high and
- 6:20Speaker 2: all my friends.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Well, there is a geographical challenge. You don't live in LA, but.
- 6:26Speaker 2: If you had told me about it, I would have
- 6:27Speaker 2: flown out.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Well, we still need to make this trifecta. This still
- 6:32Speaker 4: needs to be... This needs to come into fruition, so if...
- 6:36Speaker 4: If we need JoJo to come out here and we
- 6:38Speaker 4: film you getting this tattoo, I think we still need
- 6:41Speaker 4: to do this.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Because don't you think it'd be funnier if I got
- 6:43Speaker 1: it because you guys have tons of ink and I
- 6:45Speaker 1: have nothing?
- 6:45Speaker 4: And you have none.
- 6:46Speaker 3: And this would be your first one. Right, right, right.
- 6:48Speaker 4: And I think if you do it, I think you
- 6:51Speaker 4: need to get both JoJo and my name on there.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Along with my kids, maybe.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Well, yes, yes, yes.
- 6:58Speaker 4: And then maybe I'll just find a way to add
- 7:01Speaker 4: your name underneath JoJo's on mine and he can do
- 7:03Speaker 4: the same thing.
- 7:04Speaker 2: This will never happen.
- 7:05Speaker 4: You're up for this. Well, you know what?
- 7:06Speaker 3: Bromance. Bromance.
- 7:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Is there going to be new Backstreet Boys music in 2027?
- 7:13Speaker 4: You know, we've been farting around with just different ideas
- 7:17Speaker 4: and concepts. Obviously, we're like knee deep into the... Into
- 7:22Speaker 4: the Millennium tour that's currently happening right now. And then
- 7:27Speaker 4: obviously Sphere is still going. We've got seven more shows
- 7:31Speaker 4: this year. We're doing the official F1 after party. Then
- 7:34Speaker 4: we have six holiday shows going into the New Year's
- 7:37Speaker 4: Eve show and New Year's. So finding the time is
- 7:42Speaker 4: obviously tricky, but we have some concepts and some ideas.
- 7:47Speaker 3: So who knows?
- 7:47Speaker 4: I mean, is it even an album world anymore? not
- 7:51Speaker 4: even necessarily, it could be an EP. It could just
- 7:55Speaker 4: be a single. I was blown away. I'm always the
- 7:58Speaker 4: last person to find things out amongst the group. I
- 8:00Speaker 4: don't know how that happens, but I'm always like, Oh really?
- 8:03Speaker 3: We're doing that.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Um, I got tagged in a post to repost for
- 8:10Speaker 4: your Grammy consideration our song, Bottle Up.
- 8:13Speaker 3: And I was like, what?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Nice.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I'm like, that's cool. And I thought to myself, how
- 8:18Speaker 3: ironic would it be?
- 8:19Speaker 4: We've been nominated for nine Grammys in our entire career
- 8:22Speaker 4: and never won.
- 8:23Speaker 3: If we win our first Grammy... for Paw Patrol. Would
- 8:27Speaker 3: be very ironic and very serendipitous. But hey, a Grammy's
- 8:34Speaker 3: a Grammy. Doesn't matter what it's for.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I will say my daughter, Naomi, her favorite song is
- 8:38Speaker 2: Bottle Up.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I mean, it's a great record.
- 8:40Speaker 1: A couple times a week, she'll ask me to play it.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Daddy, bottle up. Daddy, bottle up.
- 8:44Speaker 4: I mean, it was written by Siobhan and Ed Sheeran.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And it's such a great, positive, fun song. And we
- 8:52Speaker 4: went to the premiere. And it was just kind of
- 8:54Speaker 4: cool to sit there and watch this movie, even though
- 8:56Speaker 4: we're all grownups. We have kids that are, Nick's kids
- 9:00Speaker 4: are right in the Paw Patrol age. The rest of
- 9:03Speaker 4: ours are a little older now. But just to watch this,
- 9:06Speaker 4: you know, amazing franchise, amazing movie, and to see your song,
- 9:11Speaker 4: it's just really, really fun. You know, it's kind of
- 9:14Speaker 4: like when we did This is the End. Totally different
- 9:16Speaker 4: movie than Paw Patrol, by the way.
- 9:18Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 2: All right.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Really sweet. Really sweet. Any Backstreet Boys surprises on your tour?
- 9:24Speaker 3: You know what?
- 9:25Speaker 4: Actually, so I am doing a show in Orlando and
- 9:28Speaker 4: I'm doing a show in Atlanta.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I talked to Howie. I talked to Brian.
- 9:32Speaker 4: So if they are in town, they would love to
- 9:34Speaker 4: come up and maybe surprise the fans.
- 9:37Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 9:38Speaker 4: You know, I know Brian's schedule is a little different
- 9:41Speaker 4: because Bailey's on tour right now with Jonas Brothers. So
- 9:44Speaker 4: he's killing it out there right now. So I think
- 9:47Speaker 4: he finishes the day before I get to Atlanta. So
- 9:51Speaker 4: we're trying to work that out. And then Howie, I
- 9:53Speaker 4: don't know where he's going to be in the world
- 9:55Speaker 4: Cause he's doing great with his solo right now with
- 9:57Speaker 4: his single and with him flying, he got his pilot's license.
- 10:01Speaker 4: So every other day he's out flying. I told him,
- 10:05Speaker 4: I'm not going with you on a plane. Just so
- 10:07Speaker 4: you know, we're not going to have a, you know,
- 10:10Speaker 4: a Leonard Skinner type or a Zeppelin thing, whatever it was,
- 10:13Speaker 4: you know, skinny.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I didn't know.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He could pilot our next round of the world trip.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Maybe who knows?
- 10:17Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely not. No, no, no. All right.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Look, we're up against it, but you're again, your brand
- 10:22Speaker 1: new album coming out on November 27th and it's called sex,
- 10:26Speaker 1: love and music. You're going to be in Montclair tomorrow,
- 10:28Speaker 1: performing Sunday in Huntington. And then November 6th at the
- 10:32Speaker 1: hard rock in AC.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. Busy man.
- 10:34Speaker 4: AJ.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Thank you guys. Good to see you guys.
