Transcript
- 0:00Tyler Hubbard has been a minute, my dude, I was life treating you.
- 0:02Man. I'm so good, buddy, I'm doing awesome. How are
- 0:05you? I can't complain, I can't. Honestly, life is good.
- 0:10The weather's turning the corner in Nustville here, so we will take it.
- 0:13This is the time of year. Yeah, dude, spring is here.
- 0:17Fantastic music news coming from you. But I want to start with how crazy
- 0:22has this ride been for you since kind of the relaunch of your career,
- 0:26because literally, you didn't It's like you haven't missed a beat. Does it
- 0:30feel that ways, buddy? In some ways it does, Man, it
- 0:34feels really good. I feel like I found my rhythm. I feel like
- 0:39I'm re energized. I'm remotivated and inspired, and I got to really give
- 0:44that up to the fans. You know, I've been out all last year
- 0:47after putting out my debut album. I was out on the road kind of
- 0:50getting to you know, meet my fans if you will, for the first
- 0:53time and just really feel the connection, feel the support for the love.
- 0:57And so yeah, man, I'm in a great place. I'm excited about
- 1:00this next album, and you know, life is good. Family, is
- 1:03good. Music is music is good. So yeah, I just feel like
- 1:10I'm kind of in a rhythm. Man, I'm thankful for it. Uh,
- 1:14collaborations are hot in country music, and man, you're you're a part
- 1:17of really what helped them come back to life, right, and whether it
- 1:19was Nelly, Tim McGraw, Luke Bryant, Jason Derulo, right, yeah,
- 1:25yeah, is there Have you thought about the collaboration pool and dipping your
- 1:30toe back into it? And yeah, I have. Man, you know,
- 1:34I've been very intentional with these my debut album and now my second album
- 1:38to h to do no collaborations, you know. But it was hard for
- 1:44me because I love I love that process. I love making music with friends.
- 1:49But I just felt that it was really important because technically I've made I've
- 1:53always collaborated my whole entire career. You know, if it wasn't with another
- 1:56artist, it was with BK. And that's kind of what I was used
- 1:59to. So I felt like it was important to really figure out who I
- 2:02was on my own and make music that reflects that. But now, dude,
- 2:07yeah, I'm really to a to a spot now where if I'm not
- 2:10there, I'm really close to wanting to get back into the collaboration game.
- 2:15And uh, you know, it's got to be the right song, the
- 2:16right artists, and the right team. But when that time comes, I
- 2:20think I'm ready. Who are not saying you have the song sitting there waiting
- 2:25now. But when you listen to country radio, or when you're you know,
- 2:30scrolling through like some of the new songs coming out, or watching an
- 2:34award show, who are artists that you're like when I'm ready to hop back
- 2:38in the deep end. I'm not to hit you. Jack Harlow, He's
- 2:45not a country guy, but I love Jack Harlow. I love what he's
- 2:47doing, I love his music. I'm a big fan. I'm kind of
- 2:51kidding, but I'm actually not kidding at all. I'd love to work with
- 2:53him at some point. But as far as as far as uh, the
- 2:58country music community goes, you know, there's a lot of people that I
- 3:02really respect and love what they're doing. You know, I got a big
- 3:06heart for Jelly Roll. I love his I love who he is. I
- 3:09think he'd be fun to work with at some point. I think Hardy.
- 3:15I've loved Hardy and you know, as a creative for a long time and
- 3:17as a person. I think he'd be great to work with in some capacity.
- 3:23I mean, the list goes on and on, dude. I mean,
- 3:24honestly, there's a lot of people I really love. I know,
- 3:28we've worked with Morgan before, I do something with him again. I think
- 3:30he's uh, he's come a long long way, and if the song was
- 3:34right, I think that could be a lot of fun. But uh,
- 3:36but yeah, I mean there's there's there's a lot of incredible talent right now
- 3:40in country music, you know, and uh, even the Bailey Zimmerman's and
- 3:45I mean Corey Kent. I really love what Corey Kent's doing and had the
- 3:50honor of meeting him recently and connecting with him and chatting and he's just an
- 3:53awesome dude. So yeah, I could continue, but I think those those
- 3:58artists are probably at the top of my list. Back to the Jack Harlowe
- 4:01thing, you have this way and you have since since country radio first embrace
- 4:05y'all. You have this way of bringing an artist too who isn't country right,
- 4:12maybe doesn't fit what what somebody calls country. You have a way of
- 4:15pulling that man and almost like people forget does that makes sense? I'm sure
- 4:20you've heard that before. I'll take that, man, I'll take it.
- 4:24Yeah, it's uh, you know, as far as Jack's concerned, I
- 4:27mean, he's a Kentucky dude. I feel like he's probably he's probably a
- 4:30little more country than he leads on. I think if we got in the
- 4:31studio, it'd probably be pretty fun. But uh, I think you'd fit
- 4:34right in. But uh, but yeah, that's the beauty of getting out
- 4:39of our comfort zone, getting out of our box, getting out of our
- 4:42Nashville bubble, and and and expanding and growing as an artist and a writer.
- 4:46And a lot of times, you know, I have a lot more
- 4:48in common with with other artists and other genres than I then you know you
- 4:53think you will. And I think that's just part of part of the beauty
- 4:56of it all, and just getting together and uh and and really getting created
- 5:00in the same room and finding the common ground something I don't think. I
- 5:03mean, you get credit for it, but I think you're dang near at
- 5:09elite status when it comes to the type of songwriter you are, because Bud,
- 5:13you have what you create as an artist. But if some people saw
- 5:18your name tied to certain songs, they'd be like really he did that.
- 5:24One of those is a song that I was lucky enough to hear a couple
- 5:27of weeks ago, and it blew my mind to hear that Tyler Hubbard is
- 5:31a writer on a Chris Jansen song. Oh yeah, those are not same
- 5:35format, right, but there's something like so different about how you approach what
- 5:39you do and he does what he does. But like to hear y'all come
- 5:42together. Tell me about how that collaboration happened. Well, bro, that
- 5:45wasn't even that was a throwback song. That's a song that I wrote twenty
- 5:48twenty sitting on the bus in my driveway when I had COVID. I co
- 5:53wrote that one on over Zoom with ray Lean seven twenty boys and kind of
- 5:59does it up. I was going through old demos and I do this occasionally
- 6:02on flights or something. I'll just go through my phone and just listen to
- 6:05just songs from back in the day. And I ran up on this song
- 6:10and thought, man, this song feels really cool and it's like, man,
- 6:13this is a jammer. And there was a line in it that made
- 6:15me think of Chris Jansen. It was I originally had a line in there
- 6:18something about pouring out a diet due just to have a spit cup. And
- 6:23I thought, man, there's not many people out there that could pull this
- 6:27off. But I do know one guy, and so I send it his
- 6:30way and he loved it. He tweaked a few things and kind of made
- 6:33it his own. But but yeah, that was a fun. Occasionally that
- 6:38works out where I'll just be listening to old demos, and that's one of
- 6:41my favorite things, is to just try to think outside the box. Think
- 6:44where can this song live a life, you know, because it's obviously deserves
- 6:47to live a life further than just my cell phone. And so that was
- 6:51one of those songs, and I was glad he dug it, he made
- 6:55it, he made it his own. It's really cool and I'm excited for
- 6:58him. How does that fulfill you versus the artist side of things, to
- 7:02write, create and then kind of hand it off and let somebody else,
- 7:05you know, bring it to life. Yeah, I just think that's the
- 7:10songwriter in me, you know, and the publisher, you know. I
- 7:13love the process. I know how difficult it is, especially this day in
- 7:16time, to get an outside cut. So it's a lot harder to get
- 7:20an outside cut than it is for me to go record a song and put
- 7:23it out. So I consider that just a huge honor I really do as
- 7:27a songwriter. You know, in another artist records a song that you were
- 7:30a part of writing. It just it's just fulfilling, man, it's validating,
- 7:34it's cool, and uh, I just it's something that never gets old.
- 7:39It's one of my favorite parts of the game. So I keep doing
- 7:42it. When it comes to album titles, it feels like we've hit this
- 7:48era where people are more purposeful on on what they're going to name their albums.
- 7:53Right, It's not just like, oh I like track five, call
- 7:56it dat or you know, you pick three words out of a Fishbowldy Johnson
- 8:00leather Right, that's very meaningful and purposeful to where he's at in his life.
- 8:05Kenny Cheeszey's about to put out Born, where he said he feels like
- 8:09this is almost like a new version of him in this album more so than
- 8:11ever. So why does Strong fit for you and where you're at right now?
- 8:15All these one word titles? You know, well, Strong just kept
- 8:20coming up through the process and making this album. You know, we referring
- 8:22to a lot of the pieces of the puzzle as being strong. Whether it
- 8:26was a song, a mix, a take, you know, an edit,
- 8:31or a you know, photo shoot. We just kept saying that,
- 8:35man, that's a strong that's a strong picture for the you know whatever.
- 8:39And so as we were really trying to nail it down, we decided we
- 8:41kind of bounced some other ideas around, and we just decided, I think
- 8:43strong feels appropriate. And you know, for me, I'm really I'm proud
- 8:48of this project. I feel like it's one of the strongest pieces of work
- 8:52I've put together, you know, so far in my career, and I
- 8:54can confidently say that. So I just just like, yeah, let's just
- 8:58roll with strong. It feels good and I loved it that song has or
- 9:01that that word has some depth to it, you know what I mean.
- 9:03It's it's it's very multi dimensional. If you will, you know, when
- 9:09you when you talk about strength, you know, you can think about physical
- 9:13strength obviously, but mental, emotional, spiritual strength, And if you listen
- 9:18to the song, I'm really referring to relational strength when it comes to my
- 9:20marriage and my relationship with my wife, which, uh, the more life
- 9:26I live, the older I get, the more value that I really put
- 9:30in relationships in my life that are strong, you know, that take that
- 9:33take work, that take investment, that take time and energy. Whether it's
- 9:37my kids, whether it's my friends, whether it's my fans, all these
- 9:41relationships that I would consider strong that are really valuable to me based on the
- 9:48work that we've put in. When it comes to that, obviously, back
- 9:52then right now is another. It almost feels like it can have more than
- 9:58one meaning. When you hear the song and when you see the title as
- 10:01well, why did that fit for where you're at in this we'll call it
- 10:05chapter two of your career? Yeah? Back then? Yeah, yeah,
- 10:11it just felt appropriate sonically, it felt appropriate. You know. Concept wise,
- 10:16I feel like we're in a season as a culture to where a lot
- 10:22of us are really wanting to simplify a lot of us are wanting to reminisce
- 10:24on how things used to be and you know, the good qualities of ways
- 10:31of life maybe when we were growing up or things like that. So for
- 10:33me, it just it struck a personal chord. It really hit close to
- 10:39home, and you know, I can really relate to that where I'm at
- 10:41right now in life. And I guess my hope was just that everyone else's
- 10:46hopefully feeling the same way. And the more I talk to people, the
- 10:48more I gather that, Yeah, everybody's kind of on this, you know,
- 10:54this wave right now of wanting to you know, be nostalgic and be
- 10:58classic, be vintage, and you know all that's kind of in So it
- 11:01felt very timely, but also just a song that meant a lot to me
- 11:05and reflected where I'm at mentally right now, and and so yeah, I
- 11:09just just went with it and it felt it felt right when it comes to
- 11:15what you have accomplished career wise already before and now, you know, with
- 11:20with your solo efforts, you also have done a lot of awesome stuff away
- 11:24from the music that some artists haven't gotten to do. Uh, you know,
- 11:28seeing your name or or picture on a bar downtown, Uh, being
- 11:33a part of the the wolf Moon stuff. Not wolf Moon, but the
- 11:39old camp old camps. Sorry, when you're sitting now, Dean's Bar was
- 11:45part of it. Yeah, No, that's it. With knowing that you've
- 11:48already had your hand in that type of stuff. What are I'm gonna,
- 11:52for a lack of a better phrase, call them side hustles. What are
- 11:54some of the side hustles that you still maybe maybe related to music or not
- 12:00related to Nashville or not, that you hope to put your hands inside.
- 12:01Oh yeah, I think there's quite a few. Man, this is kind
- 12:07of silly, to be honest, and this is nothing of any of any
- 12:11substance. But I'm actually excited. If you see what hat I'm wearing right
- 12:15now, I'm gonna drop a hat line I'm called Hubcaps, and I'm just
- 12:18gonna start releasing hats. Why not, you know, I wear hats all
- 12:22the time. I was like, man, I need to just come up
- 12:24with my own hats, and so, yeah, hubcaps is a thing that's
- 12:26happening and it's gonna I wanna start dropping caps on y'all pretty soon. But
- 12:30that's pretty that's just fun, you know, something, just something to kind
- 12:33of be a creative outlet in a way. The funny thing about that is
- 12:37I can't I can see hub but I can't see what it says underneath that.
- 12:39So I was about to be like, what's the deal with the hat?
- 12:41Because I'm my hats and jays in my closet outweigh anything. I love
- 12:48it, and so you let me know on that hat. When that hat
- 12:52game rolls because I'm gonna be one of the first to hitch. I gotta
- 12:54get you one. I'll sing you some hats for sure. I'm in brother.
- 12:56Hey, good luck on the rest of the way to number one with
- 13:00this one. And we can't wait to hear the album and hopefully we'll catch
- 13:03up sooner or later, my man. Yeah, Wayne, thanks, Buddy,
- 13:05good good to talk to you always and we'll see soon. Likewise,
- 13:09next see you
