- 0:00Psalm 13 from the book of Psalms.
- 0:04First let's pray dear Lord, please open our eyes and our
- 0:07ears and our hearts to what you have to say.
- 0:10We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So Psalm 13, it says, it's
- 0:17probably, let's see, the Hebrew text, 13 verses one through 6 is
- 0:24numbered 13 verses 2 through 6. I don't know why that is so.
- 0:29There's a notation in the study Bible, but it says for the
- 0:33director of music, a Psalm of David.
- 0:36So how long, Lord, will you forget me forever?
- 0:41How long will you hide your face from me?
- 0:44How long must I wrestle with my thoughts, and day after day have
- 0:50sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph
- 0:55over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my
- 0:58God, give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my
- 1:03enemy will say I have overcome Him, and my foes will rejoice
- 1:08when I fall. But I trust in your unfailing
- 1:12love, My heart rejoices in your salvation.
- 1:16I will sing the Lord's praise for He has been good to me.
- 1:21That's the end of the Psalm. So here, you know, the the main
- 1:25thing that keeps being emphasized is how long is this
- 1:29going to be? I think probably all of us can
- 1:31relate to that at some point in our life of just praying and not
- 1:34having prayers answered and just the delay in it.
- 1:38But David, at the very end of it, he's praising God, he's
- 1:43trusting God and he's he's recognizing, I trust in your
- 1:46unfailing love and I rejoice, my heart rejoices in your
- 1:50salvation, and I will sing your praise.
- 1:53And he acknowledges God has been good to me.
- 1:57So in the beginning, he's just saying, where are you God my
- 2:00with these enemy encounters that he's having and his thoughts and
- 2:03things that are just not right that he knows are not right.
- 2:06And then he's kind of pleading with God, help me, I need you
- 2:09God. But then he's recalling and
- 2:11remembering. And I think that's something for
- 2:12all of us who are in a waiting period waiting for prayers to be
- 2:17answered, is that we just need to remind ourselves that God
- 2:22never fails, that we can trust in him and he's, he's forever
- 2:27trustworthy. And he, God is good and he works
- 2:33all things for those who those who love him, and he works all
- 2:40things for the good of those who love him.
- 2:42So we should always praise God no matter what the circumstances
- 2:46are. Because sometimes in the
- 2:47circumstances, God is doing some work that we are unaware of.
- 2:51And we're just unaware of so many things we can only see from
- 2:54our perspective. But God sees all the different
- 2:57perspectives. So in that regard, we just need
- 3:00to trust him and know that he sees something else.
- 3:04And there's a reason for the delay in his response to us
- 3:07because God is a loving Father and he wants to give good gifts
- 3:11to his children and he he does respond to us.
- 3:17This is very similar Davidde request like how long is this
- 3:20going on is very similar to what Job was dealing with in his
- 3:23suffering. He just didn't understand.
- 3:26And in Job's case, Job hadn't done anything wrong.
- 3:32He wasn't being punished for something that he did wrong or
- 3:35disciplined is probably a better word, not punished, but
- 3:38disciplined for something he had done wrong.
- 3:40That wasn't the case in Job's situation.
- 3:41He was just under a spiritual attack.
- 3:44So we don't always know what, why or when our prayers will be
- 3:50answered, but we just need to trust in God.
- 3:52And I think that probably just that's ultimately what God wants
- 3:59with us as a relationship. He wants he went.
- 4:02I mean, he just like rejoices when love comes back.
- 4:06I mean, it says like when one Sinner terms turns away, all
- 4:09heaven rejoices, all the angels rejoice.
- 4:12I mean, there is so much celebration.
- 4:14So God loves it when we trust in him And even though what we can
- 4:19see with our own eyes doesn't look great or it's been a delay
- 4:23and we just say, I don't care what I see.
- 4:26I don't care how long, how long this is taking, but I'm trusting
- 4:29in God. And then he, I mean, when we
- 4:32really sincerely mean that, then he knows that we know him.
- 4:36That's how you know that you know God because he does that.
- 4:40He is trustworthy. And we can't rely on Him.
- 4:44And we just have to be patient. And patience is one of the
- 4:48fruits of the Spirit. So that's something that maybe
- 4:52we are. God is refining us and making us
- 4:57into more patient people after we see the results of the
- 5:02waiting period when it turns out good and and also if we can
- 5:06recall other times where we've prayed and God has answered our
- 5:09prayers. So the most important part is to
- 5:12stay close to God and keep on praying and just trust in God.
- 5:18So that's about all I have to say.
- 5:20I will read what the study Bible says and this will be a short 1
- 5:23today. Let's see.
- 5:27It says does God have a physical body?
- 5:30I've often wondered that too, but it says no.
- 5:34When God When David wrote of God hiding his face, he was writing
- 5:39figuratively to to describe his feelings of abandonment by God.
- 5:45Biblical poetry frequently illustrates God's personality or
- 5:50spiritual characteristics by referring to God's hands, arms,
- 5:55eyes, and ears. This is you know this.
- 5:59To me this is the greatest mystery of all because I I just
- 6:04cannot. I guess if I think too long
- 6:07about it, it puzzles me because I think the Spirit of God is the
- 6:13Holy Spirit and then God is Spirit.
- 6:17So but then again they are 1. So it just, it's very confusing.
- 6:24And then Jesus is one in the Spirit with the Father, but they
- 6:26are two different persons, but one being and, and with the Holy
- 6:34Spirit as well. And actually we will see this
- 6:36affirmed in this scripture because I forgot to mention that
- 6:39too. If you've listened to the last
- 6:41Psalms that I've been reading, I've been paying attention
- 6:44whenever it says Lord our God to see what is the original Hebrew
- 6:48word that was used because when we get the English version, it
- 6:51doesn't differentiate it. It's not a great translation of
- 6:57the Hebrew. Actually, I think I might talk
- 6:59about that right now. So every reference in this the
- 7:03Psalm to Lord is is Yehovah, Yehovah, which I believe is like
- 7:12the Father. And so it says how long Yehovah?
- 7:18And then on verse 3 it says, look on me and answer Lord my
- 7:24God. And what it this says in Hebrew
- 7:26is yakova Elohim. And as a reminder Elohim is
- 7:32plural for God. So I believe this is a reference
- 7:37to the Holy Spirit, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit because L or
- 7:44ale El is singular for God. But this clearly says Elohim in
- 7:52the Hebrew. So that's another evidence of
- 7:56the the Trinity in the Bible where it's not spoken, but well,
- 8:00it is spoken, but it's not spelled out in detail saying
- 8:06like Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- 8:09It just references Elohim. But there are other places where
- 8:13you will seal ale El and you will see that.
- 8:17So this is this is saying Yehovah, which we've learned is
- 8:22the name of God and Elohim. So let's see.
- 8:28The next question and answer is, how can someone who trusts God
- 8:33have such negative thoughts? When tragedy strikes, emotions
- 8:37such as doubt, fear, and pain often consume us.
- 8:41David reminds us that since God promises to resolve difficult
- 8:45matters with His gracious justice, we have a right to call
- 8:50on Him to act. Painful times should lead us to
- 8:55not away from prayer, even if words sound harsh and angry.
- 9:03What kind of light was David asking for?
- 9:05Light is associated with life, darkness with death.
- 9:11David was perhaps asking for restoration from a serious
- 9:15illness. He may also have been seeking
- 9:18God's help for a military victory.
- 9:21And the last question and answer is why were David's emotions so
- 9:26erratic in all the verses? Within 5 verses, David moved
- 9:31from spiritual despair to hope, from gut wrenching internal
- 9:37wrestling to complete trust, from deep sorrow to rejoicing.
- 9:44What caused these dramatic changes?
- 9:47One explanation may be that David's psalms are simply
- 9:51snapshots of his feelings. As he gradually worked through
- 9:55issues, his confidence in God returned, but the changes may
- 10:00have occurred more slowly than it appears from reading the
- 10:03compressed account in these few verses.
- 10:06Another explanation may be that David knew how to express his
- 10:10feelings and faith simultaneously.
- 10:13Perhaps David revealed his emotions on one level but
- 10:17expressed his core beliefs on another level.
- 10:21David's mood changes Our David's mood changes reflect the
- 10:27feelings of normal people struggling with their faith.
- 10:30Perhaps that's why so many people can identify with Psalms.
- 10:36And this concludes the Psalm 13 study for today.
