- 0:13murderers. Hey listeners, this is Nick from
- 0:16Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the question,
- 0:21Why did Steven rehearse Israelite history?
- 0:28As the church grew in Jerusalem, the 12 apostles called seven men
- 0:31to assist with the temporal needs of the Saints, especially
- 0:35the widows. One of these seven men named
- 0:38Steven was full of faith and power, did great wonders and
- 0:43miracles among the people. Because of this, Steven was
- 0:46arrested on false charges of disrespecting Moses, the Law,
- 0:51and the Temple. He was brought before the
- 0:53Council where he would offer one of the most well known sermons
- 0:57recorded in the Book of Acts. Throughout his sermon, Stephen
- 1:01refers to various events in Israelite history as noted by
- 1:05Andrew C Skinner and D Kelly Ogden.
- 1:08Stephen reviews the history of Israel to show how great
- 1:11persons, events, doctrines, and practices were all types and
- 1:16shadows of Christ and how all the past culminates in the
- 1:20coming of the Messiah, Jesus. In so doing, Stephen further
- 1:25shows how Israel's history is a cycle of apostasy and
- 1:28restoration. Israel has a long history of
- 1:31rebellion against the Lord. Stephen shows, which culminated
- 1:34in the rejection of the Messiah. Stephen begins his sermon by
- 1:39referring to the obedience of Abraham.
- 1:42The God of Glory appeared unto our Father Abraham when he was
- 1:45in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Cheron, and said unto him,
- 1:50Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into
- 1:54the land which I shall shoe thee.
- 1:56Because Abraham obeyed the Lord, a covenant was made with him
- 2:00that his seed would inherit the promised Land.
- 2:04Abraham's faith and obedience set a standard for his
- 2:06descendants that would unfortunately largely be
- 2:09ignored. Following describing Abraham,
- 2:13Stephen then moves on to discuss how the sons of Jacob moved with
- 2:17envy, sold Joseph into Egypt, but God was with him.
- 2:23One scholar, Vincent KH Oi, remarked that this incident
- 2:27shows how envy and hatred were already gripping the people of
- 2:30promise at this early stage, threatening the unfolding of the
- 2:34promise of God. However, Joseph's misfortune is
- 2:38used by God to save his family. Stevens retelling of Joseph's
- 2:42journey is one of God providentially bringing good out
- 2:46of the evil intention of the Patriarchs and appointing the
- 2:49rejected one over those who rejected him, Oi observes.
- 2:54Abraham's descendants survived because God delivered them
- 2:57through the one they rejected. Joseph, rejected by his own
- 3:01brothers by God's choice, became the innocent sufferer and savior
- 3:06of his people. This is a pattern reflected in
- 3:09the stories of Moses, Jesus, and Stephen within Acts chapter 6
- 3:14through 7. Furthermore, Joseph serves as a
- 3:17type of Christ in his response to his brothers coming to Egypt
- 3:22for food during the hard famine. Like Jesus, Joseph responded
- 3:26graciously to those who rejected him, ensuring their salvation.
- 3:31Moses, another prophetic type of Christ, was likewise rejected
- 3:36multiple times by the Israelites.
- 3:38This occurs, as Steven shows, even before Moses fled Egypt and
- 3:44seeing one of them suffer. Wrong, he defended him and
- 3:47avenged him that was oppressed and smote the Egyptian.
- 3:51For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that
- 3:54God by his hand would deliver them, but they understood not.
- 4:00However, when Moses attempted to reconcile 2 Israelites the
- 4:03following day, he was rejected, causing him to leave Egypt.
- 4:08Then, after Moses had led the children of Israel out of Egypt,
- 4:12Moses is again rejected on a much larger scale.
- 4:16The children of Israel thrust him from them and their hearts
- 4:20turned back again into Egypt, saying unto Aaron, make us gods
- 4:25to go before us. For As for this Moses which
- 4:29brought us out of the land of Egypt, we want not what is
- 4:32become of him. The rejection of Moses is a
- 4:35prophet in favor for false gods and Egyptian lifestyle became a
- 4:40repeated struggle throughout the Israelites wandering in the
- 4:43wilderness. The Israelites would continue to
- 4:46reject the Lord for idols throughout their history,
- 4:49causing them to be punished and exiled on multiple occasions.
- 4:54However, the Lord did not completely reject his people and
- 4:58would continue to bless them and gather them as they repented.
- 5:02Finally, however, the greatest rejection would take place.
- 5:05Just like Joseph was rejected by his brothers, just like Moses
- 5:09was repeatedly rejected by the children of Israel, Jesus Christ
- 5:13was ultimately rejected and killed by the present generation
- 5:16of the House of Israel. This led to Stephen offering the
- 5:19stinging rebuke. Ye stiff, naked, and
- 5:22uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy
- 5:27Ghost as your fathers did. So do ye Which of the prophets
- 5:33have not your father's persecuted?
- 5:35And they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of
- 5:38the just one of whom ye have been now the betrayers and
- 5:42murderers. The murder of Jesus was
- 5:44ultimately the greatest act of treachery committed throughout
- 5:47Israel's tumultuous history and shows how the people rather than
- 5:51Stephen, were those who were ultimately speaking against the
- 5:54Law, Moses, and the Temple, each of which pointed forward to
- 5:58Jesus Christ. As Oy noted, Stevens indictment
- 6:02appears to suggest that the killing of Jesus is related to,
- 6:06if not a culmination of, the people's rejection of the law.
- 6:10Steven would soon find himself the latest incident in Israel's
- 6:14continued rejection of the prophets being stoned for his
- 6:18testimony that I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man
- 6:22standing on the right hand of God.
- 6:25As Steven shows throughout his sermon, God has called and
- 6:28continues to call prophets who testify of Jesus Christ.
- 6:33Many of these prophets point to Jesus Christ through more than
- 6:37just their message, emulating his life and on occasion, his
- 6:41rejection and death. Despite the rejection they face,
- 6:45prophetic messengers such as Steven stand firm in their
- 6:49beliefs and testify to the world what they know to be true.
- 6:53Furthermore, we can recognize how Steven portrays God's work
- 6:57through His sermon. Even as His children are not
- 7:01always faithful to His covenants and gospel.
- 7:04The Lord is always at work for our salvation.
- 7:07He continues to work in His vineyard seeking the immortality
- 7:11and eternal life of all His children.
- 7:14This is made available to us conditional upon our acceptance
- 7:18of the Lord's will in our lives and our acceptance of His
- 7:21messengers. We must follow the Prophet and
- 7:24other appointed leaders of the Church if we hope to gain any
- 7:27lasting peace in this life or the life to come, thereby
- 7:32learning from the mistakes others have made throughout
- 7:34history and choosing to follow the Lord instead.
