- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Hope you're having a great Wednesday. Better than a growing
- 0:23Speaker 4: number of NFL quarterbacks. Paul, we have injuries.
- 0:25Speaker 5: Yeah, we're going to get to that. Kirk Morrison, former
- 0:28Speaker 5: NFL linebacker, friend of the show, Not So Fast. And
- 0:30Speaker 5: he covers the Raiders every day. He's in a good mood.
- 0:33Speaker 5: The Raiders are in a good mood. But we're going
- 0:34Speaker 5: to talk about some serious situations. Pearl, where are we starting?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Okay, we can start at a number of teams.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Let's go to your favorite team, the Chicago Bears. Caleb Williams,
- 0:43Speaker 4: of course, hurt his hamstring last week. Tyson Badgen was
- 0:47Speaker 4: supposed to be the backup. We find out Tyson Badgen
- 0:49Speaker 4: is in concussion protocol. So that means my guy, my
- 0:53Speaker 4: good personal friend, Case Keenum, third string quarterback, could start
- 0:57Speaker 4: Monday night against the Eagles. So I don't want to
- 0:59Speaker 4: talk to journalists, Paul. I want to talk to Chicago, Paul.
- 1:03Speaker 4: South side of Chicago, Paul.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I don't know. South side, north side?
- 1:05Speaker 6: South side.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Okay. Put your Bears hat on. What's the reaction in Chicago?
- 1:10Speaker 5: Oh, I think it's interesting because the reaction in Chicago
- 1:12Speaker 5: is like in three parts right now.
- 1:14Speaker 6: If you go to Sunday.
- 1:15Speaker 5: Bears fans thought their franchise, true franchise quarterback, was hurt
- 1:19Speaker 5: now for the season. Then they get the good news
- 1:22Speaker 5: a day later that he's not hurt that badly, and
- 1:24Speaker 5: it's a grade one hamstring pull, which means week to week.
- 1:27Speaker 5: So now you're kind of celebrating, but then Chicago media
- 1:31Speaker 5: and fans went into this complete defensive mode yesterday.
- 1:33Speaker 6: Believe me, I listen to radio there all the time.
- 1:36Speaker 5: And they were protecting Caleb Williams' reputation, and people are
- 1:39Speaker 5: calling him soft on the internet, inferring he's soft. Even
- 1:43Speaker 5: People like media people were saying he was soft. And
- 1:46Speaker 5: it became, hey, protect our guy. Then you get the curveball.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Tyson Bajent, a pretty good backup, has a concussion, is
- 1:53Speaker 5: in the protocol. He may play Monday night, extra days rest.
- 1:56Speaker 5: But then you have Case Keenum, who's played a lot
- 1:58Speaker 5: of football.
- 1:59Speaker 6: So this is an ongoing saga.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 2:01Speaker 4: So they weren't having fun with the Internet memes about
- 2:04Speaker 4: Caleb Williams going off with pumping his fist. It turns
- 2:08Speaker 4: out he'll be back next week.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Our favorite, though, was the Pope, who's also from the
- 2:11Speaker 5: south side of Chicago, trying to fix Caleb Williams like Mr.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Miyagi.
- 2:14Speaker 6: That was our favorite.
- 2:15Speaker 5: I think people like us could have some fun with
- 2:17Speaker 5: that because you realize Caleb Williams, it's good news that
- 2:22Speaker 5: he's not hurt. And we were a little surprised of
- 2:24Speaker 5: his reaction. But now you're in the position where you
- 2:27Speaker 5: lost to the Vikings, which was a bad loss. And
- 2:29Speaker 5: now you have Tyson Bajent, may not play, and your
- 2:32Speaker 5: third stringer. It feels like too much chaos from a
- 2:34Speaker 5: team that scored.
- 2:35Speaker 6: 59 points week one.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:36Speaker 4: And there's some Super Bowl hype around the Bears. Obviously
- 2:39Speaker 4: won the division last year.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Now, it's funny.
- 2:41Speaker 4: They played the Eagles last year in Philadelphia. Caleb Williams
- 2:44Speaker 4: actually had a pretty bad day. His number is 17
- 2:46Speaker 4: for 36, 154 yards, one TD, one pick. But the
- 2:51Speaker 4: Bears ran for almost 300 yards.
- 2:53Speaker 3: 281?
- 2:55Speaker 4: I don't have the perfect— Swift went for 130, and Mnangai
- 2:57Speaker 4: went for 125. They're two running backs. Two guys over
- 3:00Speaker 4: 125 yards. So that's the game plan on Monday night.
- 3:03Speaker 5: See, I completely disagree on those from Pearl. And your guy,
- 3:06Speaker 5: Case Keenum, has played a lot of football. I mean,
- 3:08Speaker 5: I always think that the Vikings should have stuck with
- 3:10Speaker 5: him instead of pivoting to another quarterback. I think Case
- 3:13Speaker 5: Keenum is going to have one of the games of
- 3:14Speaker 5: his life on Monday night.
- 3:16Speaker 6: He's 38 years old.
- 3:17Speaker 5: I don't think he's started since 2022 or 2023. He
- 3:21Speaker 5: has to know this is probably my last time starting
- 3:24Speaker 5: in the NFL and my last time getting the controls
- 3:26Speaker 5: of a team, a good team, on Monday Night Football.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I think he both wins this game and plays well.
- 3:31Speaker 5: I don't think he game-manages this game.
- 3:34Speaker 3: But isn't that adding pressure for Case Keenum?
- 3:36Speaker 5: Oh, you mean like this, what I just said? You
- 3:38Speaker 5: think Case is like, Paulie, pump the brakes?
- 3:40Speaker 4: Paul, you're like, this is your last game. You better
- 3:42Speaker 4: play well because you're not getting another shot.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I think he's a high-end backup.
- 3:46Speaker 5: And we're going to talk about the Giants in a second,
- 3:48Speaker 5: but the Bears have a nice backup system in Bajent,
- 3:51Speaker 5: and then the senior guy, truly a senior guy, 38
- 3:54Speaker 5: years old. So I look at Case Keenum as... He's
- 3:57Speaker 5: probably a player coach, not like Udonis Haslam down there
- 4:00Speaker 5: with the Heat. But he's a guy who's a luxury item.
- 4:02Speaker 5: And you always talk about when you have a quarterback
- 4:05Speaker 5: on a rookie contract, you can spend anywhere. They can
- 4:07Speaker 5: spend a couple mil on Case Keenum.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I have some good numbers encouraging for Bears fans. I
- 4:13Speaker 4: don't think a lot of people know this.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Case Keenum.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Has played Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio three times when
- 4:19Speaker 4: Fangio was running the defense. He's 3-0, three TDs, no picks, 72%
- 4:24Speaker 4: completion percentage.
- 4:25Speaker 3: So he knows this defense really well.
- 4:27Speaker 5: So we put a positive spin on that. But let's
- 4:29Speaker 5: say you're a Bears fan and you see Caleb Williams
- 4:32Speaker 5: and how teams are going after him. How nervous are
- 4:35Speaker 5: you long-term, even though it might be a short-term injury?
- 4:38Speaker 4: You're pretty nervous because, again, I looked at the Bears
- 4:41Speaker 4: as a possible Super Bowl pick.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 4: And definitely one of the main contenders in the NFC,
- 4:45Speaker 4: probably the best team that's not in the NFC West.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You obviously need Caleb Williams.
- 4:49Speaker 5: It's like taking Joe Burr away from the Bengals. You
- 4:52Speaker 5: feel like you can keep afloat, but you can't do
- 4:54Speaker 5: any damage.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Okay, Paul, we haven't actually not had this kind of
- 4:58Speaker 4: breaking news yet in our Not So Fast.
- 5:00Speaker 6: You have something?
- 5:00Speaker 4: We have some breaking news, apparently. I don't have the
- 5:04Speaker 4: graphic immediately in front of me. It turns out Jackson
- 5:07Speaker 4: Dart's going to undergo season-ending surgery, suffered damage to MCL, PCL,
- 5:13Speaker 4: and meniscus. Originally, it was reported that it could be
- 5:15Speaker 4: just meniscus or MCL strain.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Apparently, he needs surgery. He's out for the year in
- 5:21Speaker 3: New York.
- 5:21Speaker 5: What a fascinating story, because if you watch that game,
- 5:23Speaker 5: Jackson Dart goes in a locker room, and then the,
- 5:26Speaker 5: I think it's Laura Rutledge or someone was doing that game,
- 5:28Speaker 5: and they said, Dart wants to go back out there
- 5:30Speaker 5: and play. He's trying to come back out and play
- 5:32Speaker 5: with severe knee injury.
- 5:34Speaker 4: That was Jordan Renan of ESPN who reported that Dart
- 5:36Speaker 4: was fighting to get back.
- 5:37Speaker 3: You saw him on the sideline. He didn't look like
- 5:39Speaker 3: a guy whose season was over. He was engaged. He
- 5:42Speaker 3: was walking around okay. I guess not.
- 5:44Speaker 5: I mean, that's the one where you've got to talk
- 5:45Speaker 5: to a football player and say, is that the adrenaline
- 5:48Speaker 5: and it hasn't kicked in yet? Because that is surreal
- 5:50Speaker 5: because this is a serious injury. Let's get to the Giants.
- 5:52Speaker 5: We talked about their plan for the season. Having Jameis
- 5:55Speaker 5: Winston a month ago would have seemed like a good
- 5:57Speaker 5: backup plan. He played so poorly, he looked like a
- 6:00Speaker 5: guy imitating an NFL athlete because he was horrible. If
- 6:03Speaker 5: he had played C-plus football, they could have gone in
- 6:06Speaker 5: tied at halftime. If you're the Giants, what level of
- 6:09Speaker 5: hope have you lost?
- 6:11Speaker 3: Oh my God, all hope.
- 6:12Speaker 2: 100%.
- 6:12Speaker 3: 100%.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I'm going, done.
- 6:16Speaker 3: There's nobody on the market.
- 6:17Speaker 4: They've been talking about a guy they had in camp,
- 6:19Speaker 4: Brandon Allen, a longtime backup in the NFL.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Obviously, they're not going back to Russell Wilson.
- 6:23Speaker 4: That was a disaster last year, even though Russell Wilson
- 6:26Speaker 4: is probably available.
- 6:27Speaker 5: But if you're the Giants, you can't trade for a
- 6:30Speaker 5: good quarterback because you're not ready to compete yet.
- 6:32Speaker 6: That would be like a wasted draft pick. You know
- 6:33Speaker 6: what I'm saying?
- 6:35Speaker 3: How about J.J. McCarthy?
- 6:36Speaker 6: Okay, that could solve problems.
- 6:38Speaker 3: But that's not going to get you to the Super Bowl.
- 6:39Speaker 5: It's not going to get you to the Super Bowl,
- 6:40Speaker 5: and now you have McCarthy on your roster, and when
- 6:43Speaker 5: Jackson Dart gets hurt, now you have a mess.
- 6:44Speaker 6: You're trading for a mess.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's a lot going on here, too, because
- 6:47Speaker 4: Malik Nabors is in and out of the lineup. Without
- 6:49Speaker 4: Jackson Dart there, are you really going to risk Nabors' health?
- 6:52Speaker 4: You might put him on the side burner for a
- 6:54Speaker 4: little while. Cam Scadaboo takes a lot of toll. Are
- 6:56Speaker 4: you going to want to use a lot of Cam Scadaboo?
- 6:58Speaker 4: Are you already thinking about next year?
- 7:00Speaker 6: I think you have to.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I think if you're the management or the GM of
- 7:03Speaker 5: the Giants, you think, This may just not work out,
- 7:05Speaker 5: and we just got caught a bad break, like when
- 7:07Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers went down a couple years ago. And you're
- 7:09Speaker 5: not playing for the draft, and you don't say this publicly,
- 7:12Speaker 5: but if somehow Jackson Dart gets healthy, you get a
- 7:15Speaker 5: top-five draft pick. Next thing you know, Jeremiah Love is
- 7:18Speaker 5: available from Ohio State. It could be one of those
- 7:22Speaker 5: unintentional great injuries. I don't say great, I mean... Good
- 7:25Speaker 5: for the franchise.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I just can't picture the Giants with Malik Nabors and
- 7:28Speaker 4: Jeremiah Smith.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Some Giants fans can.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, actually I'm getting into it later in
- 7:34Speaker 4: warm takes, but I think there's a scenario where they
- 7:37Speaker 4: also look quarterback.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I don't want to give it away. I don't want
- 7:40Speaker 3: to give it away.
- 7:40Speaker 6: What's our next situation?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Next situation is Washington, which is, again, we're getting on
- 7:46Speaker 4: the hopeless end of the scale. People have seen it
- 7:49Speaker 4: by now, but Jaden Daniels went down against Dallas at
- 7:52Speaker 4: the end of the first half. Gruesome arm injury. It's
- 7:55Speaker 4: an elbow dislocation that he suffered before. It does not
- 7:59Speaker 4: look good. We're not exactly sure how long he's going
- 8:02Speaker 4: to be out. It might not be season-ending, but it
- 8:05Speaker 4: does not seem like there's any reason for optimism in Washington.
- 8:08Speaker 6: Okay, so there's an injury.
- 8:09Speaker 5: We've all seen it. We know he's going to be
- 8:10Speaker 5: out for a while. A very awkward injury, basically a non-contact.
- 8:14Speaker 5: The bigger picture is, and we've been talking about this,
- 8:16Speaker 5: this has been playing out on social media. Watch his
- 8:19Speaker 5: fellow offensive players and offensive linemen after he gets hurt
- 8:22Speaker 5: and their level of concern or lack of concern.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Okay. What do you see? Well, people are glancing at him.
- 8:30Speaker 4: They see the trainer run out, and nobody's even stopping
- 8:32Speaker 4: to pause to look for three seconds.
- 8:35Speaker 3: They have to get off the field because it's halftime.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I get that. But you can at least make sure
- 8:38Speaker 3: your guy is okay.
- 8:40Speaker 5: I'm going to back the players for Washington, the commanders,
- 8:42Speaker 5: just a little bit because halftime, I think, in the
- 8:44Speaker 5: NFL is 12 minutes. You're told to get off the field, bathroom,
- 8:47Speaker 5: water up, meet your position coach, and get back on.
- 8:50Speaker 5: I think I'm going to use that because it happened
- 8:52Speaker 5: at the end of the half that you have to
- 8:53Speaker 5: get off the field. They didn't even break stride, some
- 8:56Speaker 5: of those guys. I don't know if we can run
- 8:58Speaker 5: that back, but they didn't even break stride. They did
- 9:00Speaker 5: a glance at him.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Let's look at it again. So the thing about that,
- 9:03Speaker 4: they have to get off the field. They're going so slowly, Paul.
- 9:06Speaker 4: They're in no rush to get anywhere.
- 9:07Speaker 3: 72, he's barely going to get off in time before
- 9:11Speaker 3: halftime's over.
- 9:12Speaker 5: You've got to give Marcus Mariota credit. He both goes out,
- 9:14Speaker 5: checks on him, takes a knee. and supports him, but
- 9:17Speaker 5: he wasn't on the field.
- 9:18Speaker 4: So Mariota is not worried about halftime. No, I think
- 9:20Speaker 4: there's something really unusual happening here. Either they didn't understand
- 9:23Speaker 4: what was happening, or do you think it's possible they
- 9:26Speaker 4: have a Jaden Daniels issue? Remember, this is Washington, a
- 9:29Speaker 4: team that did not like RG3 when he was there.
- 9:31Speaker 5: You know, a lot of people have suggested that on
- 9:33Speaker 5: the internet. When I say internet, no one of reputable
- 9:36Speaker 5: said it. But when you watch that video, it's hard
- 9:38Speaker 5: to explain away. The only thing I could think is,
- 9:40Speaker 5: Professional athletes don't let likability come into things on Sunday,
- 9:44Speaker 5: I don't think. I think they would back their guy,
- 9:46Speaker 5: checking him. I think this is mostly about halftime and
- 9:48Speaker 5: getting off expeditiously.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Right. Who doesn't like Jaden Daniels? LSU fans?
- 9:52Speaker 6: LSU fans lately, a little bit, but I don't know
- 9:56Speaker 6: if they were in the building.
- 9:57Speaker 4: I'm not sure some of his dates appreciate when Jane
- 9:59Speaker 4: Daniels brings his mother on the date.
- 10:01Speaker 3: That's another side topic here. But if you look at
- 10:03Speaker 3: the guys.
- 10:04Speaker 6: It's the weirdest video of the year so far.
- 10:06Speaker 3: 71 has five minutes. Oh, it looks bad? Whatever.
- 10:09Speaker 5: It's actually worse for number 71 because he's aware of it,
- 10:11Speaker 5: sees the severity, and continues to walk up.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Nobody's thinking this guy's okay. Trainers are sprinting out 100
- 10:18Speaker 4: miles an hour.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I think Washington probably should address this. Maybe we're making
- 10:22Speaker 3: too big a deal of it.
- 10:23Speaker 6: It's getting a lot of play.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Here I am making fun of Caleb Williams and making
- 10:26Speaker 4: fun of NFL players who are Warriors, and there is
- 10:29Speaker 4: a brotherhood.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I get it.
- 10:30Speaker 5: All right, one thing before we break. Does it feel
- 10:31Speaker 5: like there's an extra rash of injuries this year? Is
- 10:35Speaker 5: this big-name players, quarterbacks especially, getting injured in national TV
- 10:39Speaker 5: games make us think there's more injuries?
- 10:41Speaker 3: I think the rate is high.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I mean, you could dispel this, but it feels like
- 10:44Speaker 4: we've seen a couple guys go down really early.
- 10:46Speaker 3: We're only two weeks into the season, Paul. I know
- 10:49Speaker 3: they're backups by week eight, but week three?
- 10:51Speaker 5: Darnold, Dart, Daniels, Caleb, Kyler Murray, Penix. There's a lot
- 10:55Speaker 5: of names there. Darnold's a defending champ. Dart was national TV.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Jane Daniels, franchise guy. Caleb Williams, franchise guy.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I think this makes.
- 11:03Speaker 5: People think the NFL has some injury problem as opposed
- 11:06Speaker 5: to an anomaly of big names.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Well, I mean, come on. Any starting quarterback in the
- 11:10Speaker 4: NFL is a big name. Those aren't even particularly big names.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Kyler Murray's on the veteran minimum. Sam Darnold's not a
- 11:15Speaker 4: huge star.
- 11:16Speaker 6: If Jacoby Brissett got injured, it wouldn't even have made
- 11:18Speaker 6: our graphic.
- 11:18Speaker 4: There's probably four quarterbacks who nobody cares about. The other
- 11:21Speaker 4: 28 are a big deal, Paul. So I do think
- 11:24Speaker 4: this is something to watch. There are not that many
- 11:26Speaker 4: backup quarterbacks, apparently. I'm really curious. Are the Giants... I
- 11:29Speaker 4: like that J.J. McCarthy idea or something. Or maybe trade for.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I have no idea who an extra guy is, but
- 11:35Speaker 3: they can't go Jameis.
- 11:36Speaker 5: The only person I would think about trading for is
- 11:38Speaker 5: Mac Jones, the backup of the 49ers.
- 11:40Speaker 6: But I wouldn't do it if I was the Giants.
- 11:42Speaker 5: If I was a contender or contender-ish team, Mac Jones'
- 11:45Speaker 5: final year of his deal, his two-year deal with the 49ers,
- 11:49Speaker 5: he could be expendable because Brock Purdy looks like he's perfect.
- 11:51Speaker 4: My Eagles have an extra guy because Andy Dalton and
- 11:54Speaker 4: Tanner McKee were fighting for the job. And they were
- 11:56Speaker 4: holding onto McKee to trade him. They never got around
- 11:59Speaker 4: to that.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Well... Maybe now there's a chance.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Okay, coming up on Not So Fast, I have a
- 12:05Speaker 4: draft idea about Arch Manning that's going to cause a
- 12:08Speaker 4: lot of controversy around the NFL.
- 12:10Speaker 3: That's next, Not So Fast.
- 12:14Speaker 5: We love us some baseball in the midday pick-me-up pass
- 12:17Speaker 5: from Pearl off Not So Fast. Oh, great day down
- 12:19Speaker 5: in Tampa. Your raise, Pearl.
- 12:22Speaker 3: My raise?
- 12:23Speaker 6: In front of a big crowd at Yankee Stadium. Sparse. Clinch.
- 12:27Speaker 6: The AL East. Number one seed in the AL.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Great record, best record in the AL, and they only
- 12:32Speaker 5: spend in the top 20 year race.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Yeah, but we've seen the Rays do this before and
- 12:36Speaker 4: not go all the way. They're not my Rays, by
- 12:39Speaker 4: the way. I'm all about the Phillies right now, but
- 12:41Speaker 4: I do respect that they find a way to win
- 12:44Speaker 4: in this day and age.
- 12:45Speaker 3: It's incredible.
- 12:45Speaker 5: I was going to offer to buy you a car
- 12:47Speaker 5: if you could name me four Tampa Bay Rays, but
- 12:48Speaker 5: we won't do that.
- 12:49Speaker 6: We've got a lot to get to.
- 12:50Speaker 5: It's time for warm takes here on Not So Fast
- 12:52Speaker 5: with Pabst and Perloff.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I'll go first.
- 12:54Speaker 6: I got a warm one.
- 12:55Speaker 5: This is an emergency audible warm take I'm calling based
- 12:58Speaker 5: off something you said in segment one of this show.
- 13:01Speaker 5: You said the Giants season is over. Nothing is over.
- 13:04Speaker 5: John Belushi said it. Nothing is over. Never say the
- 13:07Speaker 5: season is over when your quarterback gets hurt. It feels
- 13:09Speaker 5: very dour right now. Great word, by the way, if
- 13:12Speaker 5: you're a Giants fan, but it's not over. Jameis Winston
- 13:14Speaker 5: looked awful.
- 13:15Speaker 6: It's not over.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Let's go back a little bit. Carson Wentz goes down.
- 13:18Speaker 5: He was a star for the Eagles. Nick Foles, leads
- 13:20Speaker 5: into the Super Bowl. You can go back to Trent Green,
- 13:23Speaker 5: goes down for the St. Louis Rams. Decades ago, decades ago,
- 13:27Speaker 5: Trent Green goes down. Kurt Warner comes in, okay? I'm
- 13:30Speaker 5: going to go back even further. Jeff Hostetler goes down
- 13:34Speaker 5: for the Giants. Who doesn't remember that? Look at this
- 13:36Speaker 5: guy in the Super Bowl.
- 13:37Speaker 6: There he is, Kurt Warner.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Jeff Hostetler for the New York Giants way back in
- 13:41Speaker 5: the day, fills in for Phil Simms.
- 13:43Speaker 6: There he is winning a Super Bowl.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Tom Brady was a nobody when Drew Bledsoe went down,
- 13:47Speaker 5: and today is the 21st anniversary of Drew Bledsoe getting
- 13:50Speaker 5: hurt and Tom Brady coming in for him against the Jets.
- 13:53Speaker 6: Nothing is over.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Now, Jameis, when I saw Jameis play the other day,
- 13:56Speaker 5: I almost did what you did and said, this season
- 13:58Speaker 5: is over.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Hopefully he can get back.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I don't know if he can, but there's a lot
- 14:01Speaker 5: of doubt right now. So if you have a good backup,
- 14:04Speaker 5: it's great. The better thing to have is a really
- 14:06Speaker 5: good team around that backup. Look at Seattle right now. Seattle,
- 14:10Speaker 5: no one's even panicked at all. Sam Darnold is hurt.
- 14:12Speaker 5: The defending Super Bowl champion quarterback is hurt. And Drew
- 14:15Speaker 5: Locke is just carrying things along. So if you're going
- 14:18Speaker 5: to say it's over, never say it's over, bro.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Okay, then let's do some kind of bet.
- 14:22Speaker 6: Keep it friendly?
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yeah. And you can name any kind of odds you want.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I am sticking by. I know you're absolutely right. Obviously,
- 14:30Speaker 3: on the Tom Brady day.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Are you taking me back?
- 14:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 4: I'm saying, you know, put your money where your mouth
- 14:36Speaker 4: is because you're saying the Giants have a chance.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That is what I'm hearing.
- 14:39Speaker 6: I'm saying they have a chance as opposed to no chance.
- 14:43Speaker 5: All right, let's make a bet. Jameis Winston wins five
- 14:46Speaker 5: games as a starter this year over under four and
- 14:50Speaker 5: a half.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I'll go under for sure. Keep it friendly.
- 14:53Speaker 7: That's a bet.
- 14:54Speaker 6: That's on the area.
- 14:55Speaker 3: One win. I do not see it happening. Now, you
- 14:57Speaker 3: say Jameis Winston. Are you sure they're going to stick
- 14:59Speaker 3: with Jameis? I have no idea. So if they get
- 15:01Speaker 3: Russell Wilson out of the booth, then I win the bet.
- 15:03Speaker 3: All right. Well, you made a good argument, although I
- 15:05Speaker 3: still don't think that you believe in the Giants. Okay.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I'm going to switch to college football.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Trinidad Chambliss, probably the Heisman frontrunner right now out of
- 15:14Speaker 4: Ole Miss. Also, a lot of talk about the NFL. Now,
- 15:17Speaker 4: the NFL is a copycat league when it comes to drafting.
- 15:20Speaker 4: So they need to see it work before they draft
- 15:23Speaker 4: it the next year. Trinidad Chambliss could not be luckier
- 15:27Speaker 4: because there are two quarterbacks in the NFL are proving
- 15:29Speaker 4: that Trinidad Chambliss can be an NFL quarterback.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Number one is down in Carolina.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Of course, that's Bryce Young, who is quite short, about
- 15:36Speaker 4: the same size as Trinidad Chambliss. And he is throwing
- 15:39Speaker 4: the ball all over the field.
- 15:41Speaker 3: No vision problems.
- 15:42Speaker 4: I don't know how good the Panthers are, but I
- 15:44Speaker 4: know that Bryce Young can put up 300 yards a game.
- 15:46Speaker 3: So he's been good. But to me, I go to
- 15:49Speaker 3: the other scale height-wise.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Tyler Shuck came into the league at 25, and that's
- 15:54Speaker 4: the other issue with Chambliss.
- 15:55Speaker 3: He's old. He's going to be 25 come draft time.
- 15:58Speaker 4: So these two quarterbacks, to me, say that Trinidad Chambliss
- 16:01Speaker 4: can work in the NFL. And we've seen, because of
- 16:04Speaker 4: the transfer portal, a lot of older quarterbacks come in.
- 16:07Speaker 3: There used to be taboo around taking a guy after
- 16:10Speaker 3: he's 22. Not anymore. You look at the list of
- 16:12Speaker 3: guys who came into the league late, and Shuck is
- 16:14Speaker 3: the ultimate. Because when the Saints drafted him, everyone said, oh,
- 16:17Speaker 3: he's too old. He's injury prone. Guess what? He looks
- 16:19Speaker 3: like a star.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I think Chambliss will be very, very attractive to NFL teams.
- 16:24Speaker 4: I'm not saying number one overall, but I think top
- 16:27Speaker 4: 10 is very much in play.
- 16:28Speaker 5: I like to ask the control room if we can
- 16:30Speaker 5: have a warm take of the week, maybe the warmies.
- 16:32Speaker 5: This will be a take. I love this take by
- 16:34Speaker 5: you because you're going counter to this. Tyler Shuck is
- 16:37Speaker 5: playing good football. He started a truckload of games in college.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Trinidad Chambliss is going to come in extremely experienced. He's
- 16:43Speaker 5: a safer pick. Cam Ward played a lot, but Liberty
- 16:46Speaker 5: and the team he's on. But I think Tyler Shuck
- 16:49Speaker 5: opens the door for Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss might be short,
- 16:52Speaker 5: but he's stocky, big, and tough. I have no issues
- 16:55Speaker 5: with his size or his experience or his age because
- 16:58Speaker 5: they either work out or they don't. How good does
- 17:01Speaker 5: Tyler Shuck now look making $ 2.
- 17:02Speaker 6: 1 million a year?
- 17:04Speaker 3: Amazing. By the way, Cam Ward incarnate word.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Incarnate word?
- 17:08Speaker 3: Malik Willis.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Malik Willis, Liberty.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Yeah, and probably three other schools in between. Yeah, no,
- 17:13Speaker 4: that's the thing about today's day and age. You cannot
- 17:15Speaker 4: have the quarterback trajectory of the old days. It used
- 17:18Speaker 4: to be a guy gets recruited by Alabama, goes into
- 17:21Speaker 4: the draft, we're done.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Right, you don't want to take one-hit wonders. And no offense,
- 17:24Speaker 5: but Mark Sanchez had one year at USC.
- 17:26Speaker 6: If you look at.
- 17:28Speaker 5: But there's other quarterbacks who played one year. Achilles Smith,
- 17:31Speaker 5: a generation ago, played one year at Oregon, and everyone
- 17:33Speaker 5: fell in love with him.
- 17:33Speaker 6: That's dangerous.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Mitch Trubisky. Trubisky. You know, the opposite.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Fernando Mendoza. A lot of experience. We really didn't know
- 17:39Speaker 4: much about him at Cal. Goes to Miami. Trinidad Chambliss
- 17:42Speaker 4: is on the trend.
- 17:43Speaker 3: He is short.
- 17:44Speaker 4: That's a bit of an issue. That's why I still
- 17:46Speaker 4: think Arch Manning goes higher. But I have Trinidad-Chambliss really high.
- 17:49Speaker 6: I want my quarterback to have played for at least
- 17:51Speaker 6: three colleges. That's a new policy.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Three colleges?
- 17:53Speaker 6: At least three colleges. I'm not so fast.
- 17:54Speaker 3: That's because you spent six years in college. I did.
- 17:56Speaker 5: One school, no master's degree. Time for my next warm take.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Hey, Southern Illinois.
- 18:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 18:01Speaker 6: I was watching baseball last night.
- 18:02Speaker 5: And I remember when they were talking about the new
- 18:05Speaker 5: digital umpire system, Robo-Umps, which is not a Robo-Ump.
- 18:09Speaker 6: A lot of people were bothered by it.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Old school people, people like me, people like others said,
- 18:13Speaker 5: I want umpires to control their strike zones. But they
- 18:16Speaker 5: developed a system where the catcher pats his head, very
- 18:19Speaker 5: easy to see on TV, even in a bar where
- 18:21Speaker 5: you can't hear a game. And then they quickly do
- 18:24Speaker 5: a replay, and it's almost instantaneous. It reminds me a
- 18:27Speaker 5: little bit of tennis, their out-of-bounds, in-bounds replay system where
- 18:31Speaker 5: it's almost instantaneous. I was watching the Cubs last night.
- 18:34Speaker 5: The guy is getting ready to pat his head. He
- 18:36Speaker 5: looks to the manager. And he shakes off the pat.
- 18:38Speaker 5: He does the non-pat. He pat fakes and doesn't go
- 18:41Speaker 5: with it. So not only do the fans in the
- 18:44Speaker 5: stands see this in real time, also the replay is
- 18:48Speaker 5: played on the Jumbotron at all major league stadiums. So
- 18:51Speaker 5: all fans go like this. They go, ah, and they
- 18:53Speaker 5: see the replay. And now it's strategy. Do you save
- 18:56Speaker 5: my head pat for the extra innings or not? The
- 18:59Speaker 5: other thing I've got a little bit of a problem with, though,
- 19:00Speaker 5: is Extra innings, there's a runner on second base. I
- 19:04Speaker 5: know it's been around since I think 2021, 2020 season.
- 19:08Speaker 5: I can't get used to it, and I don't think
- 19:10Speaker 5: it's right. It's like a hall pass. Now, you up
- 19:13Speaker 5: the urgency. You put the pitcher in a complete jam
- 19:16Speaker 5: to start extra innings. But the fact that it's used
- 19:18Speaker 5: during the regular season and not during the playoffs, I
- 19:21Speaker 5: don't like any rules that are only used part-time.
- 19:23Speaker 6: If it's a rule, make it full-time.
- 19:25Speaker 5: But if you can't use it in the playoffs, you
- 19:27Speaker 5: shouldn't use it in the regular season because that means
- 19:29Speaker 5: you prepare differently for extra inning games.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I don't know. All the kids out there who have
- 19:33Speaker 3: to stay up until the 13th inning, people have homework, Paul.
- 19:36Speaker 6: They're not old dudes like us who have to go
- 19:38Speaker 6: to bed. Kids are just going like this.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Watch it.
- 19:40Speaker 6: 14th inning, 15th inning, that's fine.
- 19:42Speaker 4: I think you're a little late, you have to admit,
- 19:44Speaker 4: on complaining about the ghost runner, Paul.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Well, I was watching last night, and I thought it
- 19:48Speaker 5: was an experiment. I did not think they would.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Stick with it.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Well, yeah, they have. I mean, baseball, you know, Rob
- 19:53Speaker 3: Manfred's got a lot of praise for all of these.
- 19:55Speaker 6: It's working out.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Okay, I did draft in my last warm take, and
- 19:58Speaker 4: I'm going right back there. Let's talk about Arch Manning
- 20:00Speaker 4: once again. Coming into the season, there was a narrative
- 20:03Speaker 4: that Cleveland Browns were tanking.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Their owner, Jimmy.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Haslam, loves Peyton Manning. He's a huge University of Tennessee booster.
- 20:10Speaker 4: So the Browns were connected to Arch. A lot of
- 20:12Speaker 4: other teams were sort of thinking about Arch. But now
- 20:14Speaker 4: there are two new teams in the Arch sweepstakes. The
- 20:17Speaker 4: Colts are 0-2, Paul. And they look like they're going
- 20:19Speaker 4: to have some injury problems. And the New York Giants,
- 20:22Speaker 4: all of a sudden, have a major injury problem at quarterback.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Now, we never thought the Giants... Hold on, I need a.
- 20:28Speaker 6: This is warm, man.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Yeah, we never thought the Giants would be tanking or
- 20:31Speaker 4: anything like that. But if they end up with, say,
- 20:35Speaker 4: 2-15 and get the top three pick.
- 20:38Speaker 3: And Eli.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Manning Giants are there. You don't think that there's going
- 20:43Speaker 4: to be chatter in New York to further tank and
- 20:46Speaker 4: get Arch Manning?
- 20:46Speaker 5: And if somehow CJ Carr goes number one or Jeremiah
- 20:50Speaker 5: Smith goes number one and they're sitting there where they
- 20:52Speaker 5: don't have to trade up to get him?
- 20:54Speaker 3: Well, it's not even that. Think about Eli.
- 20:57Speaker 4: If they're at four and the Miami Dolphins are at one,
- 21:00Speaker 4: you know, Arch could say, I don't want to go
- 21:01Speaker 4: to Miami.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I want to go to Uncle Eli's team.
- 21:04Speaker 5: I think there's a fantastic take for a couple of reasons.
- 21:06Speaker 6: It's unexpected.
- 21:07Speaker 5: It reminds me of when Peyton Manning got hurt and
- 21:10Speaker 5: they unexpectedly got Andrew Luck. Sometimes you have an injury
- 21:13Speaker 5: and you're unexpectedly in the top five of the draft.
- 21:15Speaker 5: If you remember with basketball years ago, David Robinson hurts
- 21:18Speaker 5: his back. Next thing you know, they got Tim Duncan.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Things like this happen. So your Jameis Winston being feeble
- 21:23Speaker 5: take can have a silver lining.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Well, I mean, obviously we talked about Jeremiah Smith also
- 21:29Speaker 3: makes a lot of sense.
- 21:30Speaker 4: But I think it's Arch because of Eli. That might
- 21:33Speaker 4: be a problem for Jackson Dart. The other team, Tennessee...
- 21:36Speaker 4: So Cam wore number one two years ago. You know, Tennessee, Nashville,
- 21:40Speaker 4: University of Tennessee, Peyton Manning. I think if Arch Manning
- 21:43Speaker 4: was sitting there, too, they're opening a new stadium.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I think they would want Arch as well.
- 21:47Speaker 5: I think all those are in play because he is
- 21:48Speaker 5: kind of a safe pick, sure thing.
- 21:50Speaker 6: Marketing darling.
- 21:51Speaker 3: It's a marketing thing, too.
- 21:52Speaker 5: And I think the Manning name is a safe pick.
- 21:54Speaker 5: We used to do a thing called the bust metric,
- 21:56Speaker 5: the bust meter. He doesn't feel like he has bust
- 21:58Speaker 5: in him. Look at Eli Manning. Did he have a
- 22:01Speaker 5: great career during the regular season? No, he had a
- 22:03Speaker 5: good career. But when he needed to, he had a
- 22:05Speaker 5: great career in the postseason.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, if the Giants say he had number two,
- 22:08Speaker 3: I like your scenario. C.J.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Cargo is number one. I think the Giants have to
- 22:11Speaker 4: take him. I think the public pressure would be enormous.
- 22:13Speaker 6: Oh, I think you're 100% right.
- 22:14Speaker 5: All right, before we go, let's play a little game here,
- 22:17Speaker 5: lighten the mood with all these injuries. Let's play a
- 22:19Speaker 5: little Who Said It. Now, Perloff, you and I are
- 22:21Speaker 5: terrible at this game, but we're going to see if
- 22:23Speaker 5: we can recover. Who said this? People try to compare
- 22:26Speaker 5: people all the time, but I feel like he's one
- 22:29Speaker 5: of one. He's making a name for himself in this league,
- 22:31Speaker 5: and by the end of the year, I think he's
- 22:32Speaker 5: going to be one of the top quarterbacks.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Okay, so we're talking about a young quarterback in the NFL.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I'm going to say Tyler Shuck, and that would be
- 22:40Speaker 4: Kellen Moore, his coach.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Man, I hate to go with you, but I don't
- 22:44Speaker 5: want you to go solo. I think I'm going to
- 22:48Speaker 5: go with Bryce Young.
- 22:49Speaker 6: Okay. I don't believe it, Dave Kanellis, but I kind
- 22:52Speaker 6: of believe it.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 22:55Speaker 8: People try to compare people all the time, but... I
- 22:58Speaker 8: feel like Tyler's one-on-one. That's Chris Olave, the great wide receiver.
- 23:01Speaker 8: He's making a name for himself in his league. And
- 23:02Speaker 8: it's going to be, by the end of the year,
- 23:04Speaker 8: I feel like he's going to be one of the
- 23:05Speaker 8: top quarterbacks.
- 23:06Speaker 3: So I get half a point.
- 23:07Speaker 2: You definitely.
- 23:07Speaker 5: I'm going to give you an easy half point because
- 23:09Speaker 5: you have the right team. On the official chart now,
- 23:11Speaker 5: you're ahead of me.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I wasn't really sold on Kellen Moore as my choice.
- 23:14Speaker 4: I knew it was Tyler Shuck we were talking about.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I should have gone Olave.
- 23:17Speaker 6: Chris Olave, by the way, underrated.
- 23:19Speaker 5: All right, coming up next, we're going to talk a
- 23:21Speaker 5: lot more about the Raiders, about different situations. And Kirk Morrison,
- 23:24Speaker 5: former NFL linebacker and current Raiders broadcaster, will join us
- 23:27Speaker 5: right here.
- 23:28Speaker 6: Not so fast. Stick around.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Welcome back. Not so fast. NBC Sports Now. Peacock. I'm
- 23:33Speaker 3: Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Paul, we've been fired up all day for this guest.
- 23:38Speaker 5: This guy is a former NFL player that can actually
- 23:40Speaker 5: say is a buddy of ours.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, at least we consider him a buddy. He's
- 23:44Speaker 3: Kirk Morrison, of course, a radio's color analyst, serious XM
- 23:48Speaker 3: NFL radio host, ESPN College Football. Very busy. Kirk, great
- 23:52Speaker 3: to see you. How are you doing?
- 23:54Speaker 9: Oh, man, great to be with you guys. Paulie, Herloff, man,
- 23:57Speaker 9: it's been way too long, fellas.
- 23:59Speaker 2: How we doing?
- 24:00Speaker 5: It's great to have you on the show. And the
- 24:01Speaker 5: reason we called you, we called you kind of by
- 24:03Speaker 5: surprise because you cover the Raiders, you broadcast the Raiders.
- 24:07Speaker 5: We didn't think they'd be good this early, Kirk, so
- 24:08Speaker 5: we called you up. How sustainable, how good does it
- 24:11Speaker 5: feel out there in the desert so far?
- 24:15Speaker 9: To be honest, it feels pretty good, guys. It feels
- 24:17Speaker 9: pretty good. This has been a long time coming. I mean,
- 24:20Speaker 9: this organization has been... Been through some ups and downs.
- 24:24Speaker 9: I mean, head coaches, general managers. And finally, there seems
- 24:28Speaker 9: like there's been some stabilities ever since the hire happened.
- 24:31Speaker 9: Clint Kubiak, to me, the way that he went about
- 24:34Speaker 9: his business this offseason, the way that they handled the
- 24:38Speaker 9: free agency, the draft and picking Fernando, but then drafting
- 24:43Speaker 9: some quality football players, training camp went well. And so
- 24:47Speaker 9: we had an inkling that this football team is going
- 24:50Speaker 9: to be much more improved than the three wins in
- 24:52Speaker 9: twenty twenty five. We just didn't expect it to happen
- 24:56Speaker 9: as quickly as we've seen so far in the first
- 24:58Speaker 9: couple weeks. But this football team looks a lot different
- 25:02Speaker 9: than we expected, for sure.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Why do you think Kirk Cousins is going to give
- 25:06Speaker 3: up this job, Kirk?
- 25:09Speaker 9: Look, man, I mean, Kirk understands his opportunity. We've spoken
- 25:13Speaker 9: to him many times in our production meetings. And even
- 25:16Speaker 9: after practice, I try to get a word or two
- 25:18Speaker 9: in with him after every game. And The one thing that, Perloff,
- 25:22Speaker 9: I can tell you this. He understands his role. Like,
- 25:26Speaker 9: he knows in full transparency the Raiders' opportunity was for
- 25:31Speaker 9: Kirk Cousins to have his job as the starting quarterback
- 25:35Speaker 9: because he's earned it. And that Fernando Mendoza is the
- 25:38Speaker 9: quarterback for the future. So there is no looking over
- 25:42Speaker 9: the shoulder situation right now. Kirk Cousins is playing fantastic.
- 25:46Speaker 10: Like, seriously.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He's throwing a deep ball. He's doing everything. But also.
- 25:50Speaker 9: He's showing Fernando Mendoza the way of how to be
- 25:53Speaker 9: an NFL quarterback.
- 25:54Speaker 2: So it's working out.
- 25:56Speaker 9: And to answer your question, if Kirk Cousins keeps winning, Perloff,
- 26:00Speaker 9: I don't know if he's giving up the football.
- 26:01Speaker 7: Let's be real.
- 26:02Speaker 5: You know, I want to go back, Kirk, on this
- 26:04Speaker 5: topic because the Raiders historically sometimes didn't have a great plan.
- 26:08Speaker 5: And we debated this. I think taking Mendoza was really smart, obviously.
- 26:12Speaker 5: But they're in the 10-year, 15-year plan. Instead of playing
- 26:16Speaker 5: him week two or week one, Remember Bryce Young? He
- 26:18Speaker 5: had to get benched because he played so poorly. I
- 26:21Speaker 5: love that their plan was, hey, this year is see
- 26:24Speaker 5: what you got. Let's let Kirk Cousins have the ball.
- 26:26Speaker 5: He may know that it's the last time he's going
- 26:28Speaker 5: to get the ball to start a season ever again.
- 26:30Speaker 5: How patient is Mendoza and what do you see from
- 26:32Speaker 5: him on the sidelines or during interviews?
- 26:35Speaker 2: He's extremely patient.
- 26:37Speaker 9: He is well aware of the situation, man. I love
- 26:40Speaker 9: talking to Fernando every time I get the opportunity because
- 26:44Speaker 9: he knows this is the part of the long game
- 26:46Speaker 9: when it comes to him. He realizes that right now
- 26:50Speaker 9: that everything that he does is gearing up and gearing
- 26:54Speaker 9: him toward a long standing career. We think with the Raiders,
- 26:57Speaker 9: if you notice every time on the sidelines, he's actually
- 27:01Speaker 9: wearing his helmet. He wears his helmet on the sideline
- 27:05Speaker 9: because he wants to hear the play call that is
- 27:08Speaker 9: being given to Kirk Cousins on the field.
- 27:11Speaker 2: He hears the play call.
- 27:13Speaker 9: He recites back the play call to our quarterbacks coach.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Which is Tim Sullivan.
- 27:19Speaker 9: OK, and then he talks about what's going to happen
- 27:22Speaker 9: on this play or what he sees from the defense.
- 27:25Speaker 9: So there's still a developmental process with with Fernando Mendoza.
- 27:30Speaker 9: And he's even doing that within the game. with Kirk
- 27:33Speaker 9: Cousins out there at quarterback. I've never seen that before.
- 27:36Speaker 9: All my years of playing in the football, covering the league,
- 27:39Speaker 9: I've never seen the backup quarterback with his helmet on,
- 27:42Speaker 9: reciting the plays, fully engaged in the football game. So
- 27:47Speaker 9: that's something that we'll see that, you know, I think
- 27:50Speaker 9: will help him out whenever.
- 27:51Speaker 2: He gets that opportunity to start at quarterback for the Raiders.
- 27:54Speaker 4: What role does Tom Brady have in all of this?
- 27:57Speaker 4: Does he communicate with Mendoza during the season? Do you
- 28:00Speaker 4: see him around the facility?
- 28:02Speaker 9: Well, I mean, right now during the regular season, he is,
- 28:05Speaker 9: you know, he's traveling just like me a lot, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 9: week to week with different games and things like that.
- 28:11Speaker 9: But I'll tell you this, Tom Brady is a phone
- 28:13Speaker 9: call away for a lot of folks in our organization.
- 28:16Speaker 9: And if there's anything that you need, you want to talk,
- 28:19Speaker 9: Tom Brady has been an open door for everybody, whether
- 28:22Speaker 9: it's Clint Kubiak, the head coach, John Spitek, his former
- 28:26Speaker 9: college teammate at Michigan, Fernando, Kirk Cousins, you name it.
- 28:30Speaker 9: You can call Tom Brady at any point. And talk football,
- 28:35Speaker 9: talk about life, whatever it is. And so he's been
- 28:37Speaker 9: a valuable resource into that. And look, he'll give you
- 28:41Speaker 9: his opinion. And that's the one thing I would say
- 28:43Speaker 9: about all of this situation, that it has been a truly, fellas,
- 28:47Speaker 9: a collaborative effort. When it comes to not just the team,
- 28:50Speaker 9: but even the quarterback situation, it has been collaborative with
- 28:54Speaker 9: everybody involved.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Kirk, you know that Brady thinks he's still the best
- 28:58Speaker 5: quarterback in the building.
- 28:59Speaker 6: He won't say it.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Let me get to another topic with you. You played
- 29:01Speaker 5: almost 10 years in the NFL at linebacker. When you're
- 29:04Speaker 5: in a game and a backup comes in or you're
- 29:07Speaker 5: going to face a backup quarterback the next week, how
- 29:10Speaker 5: much does the defense change what they do? And can
- 29:12Speaker 5: it be a negative where you have less tape on
- 29:15Speaker 5: the backups?
- 29:16Speaker 9: Yeah, I will go with the latter part on that one.
- 29:18Speaker 9: You have less tape on the backup. And it depends
- 29:20Speaker 9: on what backup we're talking about, right? Because if I'm
- 29:25Speaker 9: playing the New York Giants this weekend and Jackson Dart's
- 29:28Speaker 9: not available, I've got years worth of film on a
- 29:31Speaker 9: guy like Jameis Winston. Or if I'm going against Washington
- 29:35Speaker 9: with no Jaden Daniels, I got years of film on
- 29:38Speaker 9: Marcus Mariota. I know what he can do. He can
- 29:40Speaker 9: get out of the pocket. He can extend plays. He
- 29:42Speaker 9: can be a part of the run game. He can
- 29:45Speaker 9: throw the ball down the field. So it's, you just
- 29:48Speaker 9: have to know who you're going up against. The, the
- 29:51Speaker 9: unknown is the quarterback who's a backup and you don't
- 29:54Speaker 9: necessarily know much about them. So you You kind of
- 29:57Speaker 9: have to play more vanilla coverages. I love talking to
- 30:00Speaker 9: D coordinators, and they always say, look, I'm not going
- 30:03Speaker 9: to be able to help you out the first quarter
- 30:05Speaker 9: because we really have to see how they want to
- 30:08Speaker 9: game plan against us. How do they want to use
- 30:11Speaker 9: their backup quarterback?
- 30:12Speaker 2: Is it going to be a conservative game where they
- 30:14Speaker 2: hand the ball.
- 30:15Speaker 9: Off and try to play good defense, or will they
- 30:17Speaker 9: attempt to try to throw the ball around the field
- 30:19Speaker 9: a little bit? So it is a wait-and-see approach, but
- 30:22Speaker 9: the first quarter or the first 15 is usually– you'll
- 30:26Speaker 9: find out what a team is trying to do with
- 30:27Speaker 9: their backup quarterback.
- 30:29Speaker 4: All right, Raiders beat the Chargers last week. Justin Herbert,
- 30:32Speaker 4: the Internet debate rages on.
- 30:34Speaker 2: How a league is he?
- 30:35Speaker 3: Kirk, what do you see in Herbert? He looks a
- 30:37Speaker 3: little broken so far this season.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Well, I would say this.
- 30:43Speaker 9: He's got an offensive line that is not what he
- 30:45Speaker 9: envisioned to start the season. When Tyler Biotis went down
- 30:48Speaker 9: at the center spot with the ACL, your starting center
- 30:51Speaker 9: is gone.
- 30:52Speaker 2: That is always tough.
- 30:53Speaker 9: The interior of the offensive line is not what they
- 30:56Speaker 9: expected it to be. I really believe, too, that this
- 30:59Speaker 9: is a team that's really been lacking a true number one.
- 31:02Speaker 9: I think Lab McConkie is a good receiver, but is
- 31:05Speaker 9: he your gotta-have-it guy?
- 31:07Speaker 2: Okay, but he was banged up last week.
- 31:10Speaker 9: Quentin Johnson hasn't kind of lived up to his first-round billing.
- 31:13Speaker 9: They've had multiple tight ends now who are on IR.
- 31:17Speaker 9: There's just been a lot that's put on Justin Herbert,
- 31:20Speaker 9: and To me, at some point, the quarterback has to
- 31:24Speaker 9: overcome all of this, and it's just been very, very difficult.
- 31:27Speaker 9: I think that's why it's always a wait and see approach, right, fellas,
- 31:29Speaker 9: when it comes to who you hire as offensive coordinator.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Because we all thought that, hey, Mike.
- 31:34Speaker 9: McDaniel comes in as offensive coordinator. This is going to
- 31:39Speaker 9: be an amazing offense. Look at what he did with Tua.
- 31:42Speaker 9: And yet, they haven't seemed to have the chemistry or
- 31:45Speaker 9: the cohesion that's needed just yet.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So, look, it's still plenty of time left.
- 31:50Speaker 9: It's just that they're going up against some really good
- 31:51Speaker 9: football teams who are trying to figure it out. We
- 31:54Speaker 9: are so early in the season, fellas. Like, I try
- 31:57Speaker 9: not to have the hot takes just yet, but... I think, look,
- 32:00Speaker 9: the first two weeks for a team that was expected
- 32:03Speaker 9: to return to the playoffs, possibly get to a conference championship.
- 32:08Speaker 9: I think that's kind of where we're at right now,
- 32:10Speaker 9: where we just unexpectedly haven't played well.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Kirk, before we get you out of here, I know
- 32:15Speaker 5: you got to go in about 30 seconds, but we
- 32:17Speaker 5: do a thing called such thing as dumb question. You
- 32:19Speaker 5: played linebacker for a long time. Did you ever hit
- 32:21Speaker 5: someone so hard that you knocked yourself silly?
- 32:25Speaker 2: All the time.
- 32:28Speaker 9: That's the funniest part is like when you have those
- 32:31Speaker 9: open shots and you hit somebody and you actually like
- 32:34Speaker 9: oh my god I hurt my own self trying to
- 32:36Speaker 9: hit somebody happened many a times in my career but
- 32:40Speaker 9: you hop back up especially when you get a tackle
- 32:42Speaker 9: for loss like you know you got the excitement and
- 32:45Speaker 9: the adrenaline fellas kind of get me through it but
- 32:48Speaker 9: at the end of the day you're running to the
- 32:49Speaker 9: side like oh my god my shoulder is killing me
- 32:53Speaker 9: shoulder hurt all of that stuff but No, it's always fun, man.
- 32:56Speaker 9: That's a good one. I'll use that as well, telling people.
- 33:00Speaker 9: Sometimes the hardest hits in the NFL are actually the
- 33:03Speaker 9: ones that don't hurt. It's the ones that don't look
- 33:06Speaker 9: like they hurt are the ones that actually hurt.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Kirk, thanks for the time.
- 33:10Speaker 4: You know, when we started Not So Fast a few
- 33:11Speaker 4: weeks ago, we said we got to get Kirk on.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Our buddy. But only if the Raiders start 2-0. And
- 33:16Speaker 3: Paul said, well, I don't see that happening. But I'm like,
- 33:18Speaker 3: I believed in them. I believed in them. Here we are.
- 33:22Speaker 2: I get it, man. I appreciate it. I understand it.
- 33:24Speaker 9: Look, we're just as excited here in Las Vegas as well, man.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Two games down. We've got a big one in New
- 33:30Speaker 2: Orleans this week.
- 33:31Speaker 9: So their home opener, we know it's going to be loud, but,
- 33:34Speaker 9: you know, just one game at a time. And I'll
- 33:37Speaker 9: leave you with this because Clint Kubiak, the head coach,
- 33:39Speaker 9: has said this. The Raiders are playing in 17 Super
- 33:43Speaker 9: Bowls this year. You treat every week like it's the
- 33:46Speaker 9: Super Bowl, like it's the biggest game of the year.
- 33:49Speaker 9: So I'm excited to see what this team presents when
- 33:51Speaker 9: we go to New Orleans this weekend.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Thanks, Kirk. Great to see you, buddy. Wow.
- 33:57Speaker 2: That was cool.
- 33:57Speaker 3: 17 Super Bowls. I love Clint Kubiak. I'm in. I'm
- 34:00Speaker 3: in on the Raiders.
- 34:01Speaker 5: You know, the thing I really liked, what he said
- 34:03Speaker 5: there about Fernando Mendoza, that he keeps the helmet on
- 34:05Speaker 5: on the sidelines, he gets the plays in, and he's
- 34:07Speaker 5: barking them out to random people on the sidelines or
- 34:10Speaker 5: the quarterback coach. That's a little tidbit I hadn't seen yet.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah, Fernando Mendoza is such a nerd in the best
- 34:16Speaker 4: possible way for football.
- 34:17Speaker 3: I can't wait to see where this goes.
- 34:19Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, we have some problems in Colorado.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Deion might be getting rid of some players. We'll chop
- 34:26Speaker 3: it up next. Not so fast.
- 34:32Speaker 11: It's on social media, Chase. I got to blame the
- 34:35Speaker 11: Broncos fans for putting it on there. Seattle just said,
- 34:39Speaker 11: wait a minute. Here's the answers to the test right here.
- 34:43Speaker 12: So many teams do it, and I'm surprised more don't
- 34:47Speaker 12: talk about it.
- 34:48Speaker 7: If it's on social media, it's fair game. Here's the thing.
- 34:51Speaker 12: NFL teams... especially defensive coaches, will do anything to get
- 34:55Speaker 12: a heads up and a leg up.
- 34:56Speaker 7: So I don't blame them. I would do it.
- 34:59Speaker 12: I would have an entire department that's social media-based that just.
- 35:05Speaker 7: Scours the internet. And even we've had things happen.
- 35:09Speaker 12: I remember when we were with the Bears and Matt
- 35:13Speaker 12: Nagy was there, we've had situations where we've used fan
- 35:17Speaker 12: videos to get quarterbacks' cadences. And I know it's on
- 35:21Speaker 12: the copy, but study it and be like, hey, yellow cadence, okay,
- 35:25Speaker 12: they're going on too.
- 35:25Speaker 7: Okay, hey, Omaha means ready blue. So it's out there.
- 35:30Speaker 12: I think teams use all of it. I think it's
- 35:31Speaker 12: getting way overblown because teams do it all the time.
- 35:34Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast with Paxton Perloff. This is
- 35:37Speaker 5: a clip joint. That is a clip of Chase Daniel,
- 35:39Speaker 5: former NFL quarterback. A lot of years as a backup,
- 35:41Speaker 5: he'll admit, perfect guest for today to talk about backup
- 35:44Speaker 5: quarterback's injuries.
- 35:45Speaker 6: But there he was talking about the situation earlier.
- 35:48Speaker 2: It's murky.
- 35:49Speaker 5: Mike McDonald, the Super Bowl winning coach of the Seahawks,
- 35:52Speaker 5: he was doing an interview. And I'm not sure if
- 35:54Speaker 5: this was on air or not. He told Graham Bensinger
- 35:56Speaker 5: a long story that Sean Payton was upset that the
- 36:01Speaker 5: Seahawks were stealing social media posts from Denver Broncos fans
- 36:04Speaker 5: at training camp.
- 36:05Speaker 6: You couldn't make this story up.
- 36:06Speaker 10: Right.
- 36:06Speaker 4: They weren't spying on practice with a secret cameraman or
- 36:10Speaker 4: a guy with a fake mustache.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:12Speaker 5: It's one of those stories where I saw the stories like,
- 36:15Speaker 5: how would this get out?
- 36:16Speaker 3: Because.
- 36:17Speaker 5: And then when you read more into it, it's like, oh,
- 36:19Speaker 5: they weren't saying it was Spygate and they had a
- 36:21Speaker 5: spy there, this Connor Stallions type stuff. It was fan
- 36:25Speaker 5: stuff that's in public domain on the internet or social media.
- 36:27Speaker 10: Right.
- 36:28Speaker 3: So what are you supposed to do? Not look at Twitter?
- 36:30Speaker 3: If you're a team? This is ridiculous. Saul Payton seems
- 36:33Speaker 3: so old school here. It really bothered me.
- 36:35Speaker 6: You know, this story, I think, has some legs.
- 36:36Speaker 5: Because I don't think, and sources are telling me, that
- 36:39Speaker 5: Mike McDaniel thought this was going to go out, was
- 36:41Speaker 5: going to be on.
- 36:42Speaker 6: The record, and would get out there.
- 36:43Speaker 5: I think this was a story that was meant for
- 36:45Speaker 5: a little.
- 36:46Speaker 6: Behind the scenes chit-chat.
- 36:47Speaker 4: By the way, you met Mike McDonald on the show
- 36:50Speaker 4: in July at Tahoe.
- 36:52Speaker 3: He seems like a great dude. Unbelievable. I'm on Team McDonald.
- 36:55Speaker 6: Yeah, you don't want to fight him. Completely jacked. Very fun.
- 36:58Speaker 5: He told us, Dan Patrick and the guys on the show,
- 37:00Speaker 5: a couple stories that weren't for the air. And he
- 37:03Speaker 5: told us in the breaks. He even said he did
- 37:05Speaker 5: a couple just between us. And we respected that. So
- 37:09Speaker 5: this story is about the Seahawks. Sean Payton and about
- 37:12Speaker 5: the media and how they do things with interviews.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Well, maybe Mike McDonald does have to tighten it up
- 37:16Speaker 4: a little bit. If the camera's rolling, as Dan said
- 37:19Speaker 4: today on the show.
- 37:20Speaker 3: You better be on.
- 37:21Speaker 6: Yes, you got to be careful, coach.
- 37:22Speaker 3: And you better have your mic on, which I did
- 37:23Speaker 3: not at the beginning of the segment.
- 37:25Speaker 5: Oh, I thought that was irony based off the segment
- 37:27Speaker 5: with Mike McDonald having his on too long.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Right. That's what it was. You're Mr. Irony. All right.
- 37:31Speaker 3: For our next clip, let's go to our old friend,
- 37:33Speaker 3: Ross Tucker. He was on with DP.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Talking about Aaron Rodgers, now he's calling the Steelers-Bengals game.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Everyone's giving up on Aaron Rodgers, but I don't think
- 37:41Speaker 4: Ross is quite going there.
- 37:43Speaker 10: I think it's early for that. They did win their
- 37:45Speaker 10: week one game, but the offense has been bad. I mean,
- 37:49Speaker 10: really bad. And the offensive line is not performing as
- 37:54Speaker 10: well as I think, frankly, they expected. This is a
- 37:56Speaker 10: young offensive line that they've invested a lot of draft
- 38:00Speaker 10: picks in, that played a bunch last year. I actually thought...
- 38:04Speaker 10: They were really coming along last year, which is probably
- 38:08Speaker 10: the most jarring part of all this for Steelers fans. Like, wait, wait, wait, no,
- 38:13Speaker 10: these guys were good last year. Why are they not
- 38:15Speaker 10: good this year?
- 38:17Speaker 4: You know, I watched that Steelers-Patriots game pretty closely, and
- 38:20Speaker 4: I had the same thought as Ross. Aaron Rodgers never
- 38:22Speaker 4: had a prayer. Nobody was blocking anybody. They can't run
- 38:25Speaker 4: the ball. Everyone said Rodgers looks like he's done. To me,
- 38:28Speaker 4: the entire offense looked like it was done. Rodgers still
- 38:31Speaker 4: has zip in his arm. I don't know if he
- 38:32Speaker 4: can move. But this wasn't all about him.
- 38:35Speaker 5: You could play football at the level we play football
- 38:37Speaker 5: and know that older quarterbacks and bad offensive lines are
- 38:39Speaker 5: the worst combination in the NFL. And now you have
- 38:42Speaker 5: the Bengals coming to town. The Bengals are kind of
- 38:45Speaker 5: gearing up to have a defense, and they feel like
- 38:47Speaker 5: they're getting some coverage. I'll bet if you're Dexter Lawrence
- 38:49Speaker 5: and the guys, you're looking at Aaron Rodgers saying, This
- 38:51Speaker 5: is perfect for us.
- 38:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, and I put this on Mike McCarthy,
- 38:55Speaker 4: the Steelers coach. He knows that Cincinnati's hungry for this one.
- 38:58Speaker 4: They have to figure out a way, A, to protect Rodgers.
- 39:01Speaker 4: Aaron Rodgers called out the play calling after the game.
- 39:04Speaker 3: He's right.
- 39:05Speaker 4: The play calling was totally messed up. DK Metcalf can't
- 39:08Speaker 4: catch anymore. It's number one wide receiver. That's pretty bad
- 39:11Speaker 4: for a wide receiver. That's one thing that you really
- 39:14Speaker 4: want to get under control. Catching is a big part
- 39:15Speaker 4: of the job. To me, I think Rodgers took way
- 39:18Speaker 4: too much heat after this game. That being said, it
- 39:21Speaker 4: could be ugly in week three.
- 39:22Speaker 5: We have another situation. This is college football. Deion Sanders,
- 39:25Speaker 5: everyone was going well two years ago.
- 39:27Speaker 6: Nine wins. Heisman Trophy winner.
- 39:29Speaker 5: And now they lost 41-7 to Northwestern. And as Northwestern
- 39:34Speaker 5: football is not bad, like it used to be really,
- 39:35Speaker 5: really bad.
- 39:36Speaker 6: Now it's like solid and.
- 39:37Speaker 5: They have a new stadium. But when you lose to
- 39:39Speaker 5: a school like Northwestern, people get yelled at. And some
- 39:42Speaker 5: players for Colorado were chirping about the field being quiet
- 39:45Speaker 5: before the game.
- 39:46Speaker 6: That was big on social.
- 39:47Speaker 5: And then some players, I guess, were laughing in the
- 39:49Speaker 5: locker room on the way after the 41-7 loss.
- 39:52Speaker 6: And Prime didn't like that.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Saw your postgame and you said, you know, we'll see
- 39:56Speaker 1: what you're about and that kind of stuff.
- 39:59Speaker 3: And you were proud of some of the players, how
- 40:02Speaker 3: they reacted.
- 40:02Speaker 7: Just a few guys are not on the team anymore.
- 40:05Speaker 10: So you know.
- 40:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:09Speaker 5: There's a few guys that are not on the team anymore.
- 40:11Speaker 5: He didn't really have to be asked that. It seems
- 40:13Speaker 5: like he wanted to make that statement.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Yeah, he was clearly mad. Are these walk-ons that he's cutting,
- 40:18Speaker 3: or is anybody good? What's the story here?
- 40:20Speaker 5: You know, when you give up 41 and score 7
- 40:23Speaker 5: on Northwestern, everyone's vulnerable.
- 40:25Speaker 6: I do wonder how this goes going forward.
- 40:27Speaker 5: Do you think this is a pivot to where he
- 40:29Speaker 5: brings more discipline and they right the ship? Or is
- 40:32Speaker 5: this step one in him exiting that program, either going
- 40:36Speaker 5: back to just being Deion Sanders, which is a good business,
- 40:38Speaker 5: or coaching elsewhere.
- 40:39Speaker 4: It's very weird because he used to be the focal
- 40:42Speaker 4: point of all of college football, and now they're irrelevant.
- 40:45Speaker 3: In fact, this is the most relevance they've had all season.
- 40:48Speaker 3: It seems to me the latter. I think Deion, at
- 40:50Speaker 3: a certain point, is going to get tired of this.
- 40:52Speaker 6: Yeah, it does seem frustrating. He does not seem like
- 40:54Speaker 6: a quitter.
- 40:55Speaker 5: I don't think he would like to go out like this,
- 40:57Speaker 5: but it's going the wrong direction, and he doesn't have
- 40:59Speaker 5: his son.
- 41:00Speaker 6: and Travis Hunter didn't play with anymore.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and his sort of second son, Travis Hunter, who
- 41:05Speaker 4: he was always around. I don't know why he would
- 41:07Speaker 4: say here he looks totally miserable and the team is
- 41:09Speaker 4: not going to deliver. All the promise of the recruiting
- 41:12Speaker 4: and all the things that Deion supposedly brought to this program,
- 41:15Speaker 4: I don't see it.
- 41:16Speaker 5: By the way, if I play for Colorado, I'm not
- 41:18Speaker 5: laughing at anything anymore. I don't laugh at a funny movie.
- 41:20Speaker 5: If old school's on, I'm not laughing at that because
- 41:22Speaker 5: Coach might be watching. All right, it's time for the
- 41:24Speaker 5: rando here on Not So Fast. It's something we saw
- 41:27Speaker 5: that we liked, didn't like on social media. This is fantastic.
- 41:30Speaker 5: Miami Hurricanes. Everyone knows back in the day they had
- 41:32Speaker 5: those powerhouse teams, 01, 02, 03. This is the Canes
- 41:36Speaker 5: team store. Old throwbacks of Canes jerseys.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Dorsey.
- 41:41Speaker 6: Oh my gosh. Clinton Portis. Ed Reed.
- 41:44Speaker 5: I'm buying the Ed Reed jersey. I'll take my money.
- 41:47Speaker 5: Sean Taylor.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Shockey.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Gorge.
- 41:49Speaker 4: I just saw Jeremy Shockey on the Manning cast. I
- 41:52Speaker 4: realize a lot of young people do not realize how
- 41:54Speaker 4: awesome this man was.
- 41:55Speaker 10: Yes.
- 41:55Speaker 4: He was a content machine and he was a great
- 41:58Speaker 4: football player. And he was in Miami and Kellen Winslow
- 42:01Speaker 4: was his backup. That was the most talented team ever.
- 42:04Speaker 4: I would not buy the Ken Dorsey jersey because the
- 42:07Speaker 4: talent was around Ken Dorsey.
- 42:08Speaker 5: But you don't want more street cred. It's like liking
- 42:10Speaker 5: an alternative band. You get the Ken Dorsey jersey. Everyone
- 42:12Speaker 5: else has Ed Reed and Shockey.
- 42:14Speaker 3: I want the Najee Davenport jersey.
- 42:16Speaker 6: There you go.
- 42:16Speaker 3: I want to go a deep cut. Or your buddy
- 42:18Speaker 3: Jared Payton was there, too.
- 42:20Speaker 6: I've got to get the Jared Payton Canes throwback. All right,
- 42:22Speaker 6: stick around.
- 42:22Speaker 5: Coming up, constructive criticism, the feel-good, and the latest on
- 42:26Speaker 5: Jackson Dart and the Giants.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Stick around. This is Not So Fast.
- 42:29Speaker 4: All right, welcome back to Not So Fast.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Bad news in New York. Jackson Dart out for the season.
- 42:35Speaker 4: He will have surgery to repair his MCL, PCL, and meniscus.
- 42:41Speaker 4: His ACL apparently is intact, Paul. Now, the interesting thing
- 42:45Speaker 4: about this, there was an option. They could have trimmed, reportedly,
- 42:48Speaker 4: according to some big NFL insiders, trimmed his meniscus and
- 42:51Speaker 4: hoped that it'd be more short-term. But the Giants said
- 42:54Speaker 4: we're more concerned about the long-term with their quarterback.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Do you think this was like a collaborative decision with Dart,
- 42:59Speaker 5: his agent, the training staff, and maybe even management to say, like, look,
- 43:03Speaker 5: we're not competing for a Super Bowl this year, to
- 43:05Speaker 5: try to push this and get him back in four
- 43:07Speaker 5: weeks with a knee that's going to need surgery in February?
- 43:10Speaker 5: as opposed to let's do the surgery now and give
- 43:12Speaker 5: him as much time as he can to ramp up
- 43:14Speaker 5: for 2027.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 43:16Speaker 4: If it was a veteran quarterback on a team with
- 43:18Speaker 4: Super Bowl ideas, then maybe it would be a different
- 43:20Speaker 4: scenario altogether. A guy, say the Eagles and Jalen Hurts
- 43:24Speaker 4: already got in two contracts, he might say, you know what,
- 43:26Speaker 4: I want to compete for a Super Bowl.
- 43:28Speaker 3: But Jackson Dart, that's a long-term plan there in New York.
- 43:30Speaker 5: Let's go back to the other side of this. If
- 43:32Speaker 5: you're the Giants, you do have a nice team that's
- 43:34Speaker 5: on the up. Harbaugh's there, John Harbaugh. And do you
- 43:37Speaker 5: trade for a quarterback or go to practice squad, deal
- 43:41Speaker 5: with what you got?
- 43:42Speaker 3: You don't have enough firepower, a quarterback, because Jameis Winston
- 43:46Speaker 3: looked old. It happens.
- 43:47Speaker 4: He just doesn't have his arm. Probably too busy covering
- 43:49Speaker 4: the World Cup this summer. You had Brandon Allen and
- 43:52Speaker 4: Jake Hayner in camp.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Neither of those guys are the answer.
- 43:54Speaker 5: But is there any chance management sides with what you said?
- 43:56Speaker 5: Jameis Winston could be okay this year or really bad.
- 43:59Speaker 5: And you say to yourself, hey, the fans are going
- 44:01Speaker 5: to excuse you to a point. The coach, Harbaugh's got
- 44:04Speaker 5: the full hall pass. It wasn't his fault his quarterback
- 44:06Speaker 5: got hurt.
- 44:06Speaker 6: They're not going to bail on him or turn on him.
- 44:08Speaker 5: If management says, let's stick with Winston, you could have
- 44:12Speaker 5: a top-five draft pick that you didn't expect.
- 44:14Speaker 6: And you said earlier, if that happens, all bets are off.
- 44:16Speaker 3: No, 15 games of Jameis Winston? That cannot happen, Paul.
- 44:20Speaker 3: First of all, he's going to get hurt. He probably
- 44:22Speaker 3: takes huge hits as well. But what about us?
- 44:24Speaker 5: The bonus of Jameis Winston being in front of the
- 44:26Speaker 5: mic every week, as the quarterbacks have to do on Tuesday.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Well, I think that Jameis Winston will play better if
- 44:30Speaker 4: he gets more time. We've seen him play well before.
- 44:32Speaker 4: I was so mystified by his interception yesterday. He underthrew
- 44:35Speaker 4: a guy by 10 yards. He saw a receiver wide
- 44:38Speaker 4: open in the end zone and hit the cornerback in stride.
- 44:41Speaker 3: I don't know what happened.
- 44:42Speaker 6: It looked like a body-switching movie, and I was playing
- 44:44Speaker 6: for the Giants.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I like a trade idea. I mean, J.J.
- 44:47Speaker 4: McCarthy is going to be one name that comes up,
- 44:48Speaker 4: but there are good backups around the NFL. Maybe a
- 44:51Speaker 4: team that is probably not going anywhere. Thinking for a
- 44:54Speaker 4: fifth-round pick, why not?
- 44:55Speaker 6: All right, another injury in New York.
- 44:57Speaker 5: This one has some implications right now. The Yankees are
- 45:00Speaker 5: going to the playoffs like they almost always do, but
- 45:01Speaker 5: Aaron Judge, their huge star, literally and figuratively, has a
- 45:05Speaker 5: shin issue, and it keeps him out for the first
- 45:07Speaker 5: round of the playoffs.
- 45:08Speaker 6: Level of big deal, Pearl.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Oh, huge deal.
- 45:11Speaker 6: The biggest of deals?
- 45:13Speaker 3: The tallest of deals because he's 6'7. They need offense badly,
- 45:17Speaker 3: and without Aaron Judge, they just can't hit.
- 45:20Speaker 4: I saw a stat that he is the most effective
- 45:22Speaker 4: first-inning player in Major League Baseball, as you'd expect.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Hits tons of home runs. They have a great pitching staff.
- 45:28Speaker 4: They have the best ERA in baseball by a long margin.
- 45:31Speaker 4: I was surprised by that. But you need some offense,
- 45:34Speaker 4: and Judge is the man.
- 45:35Speaker 5: You know, oddly, I'm going to say both injury issues. Like, Judge,
- 45:38Speaker 5: look at them right now. They have a very good
- 45:40Speaker 5: pitching staff, and that would be my concern. I'm going
- 45:42Speaker 5: to say this is a medium deal with Judge because
- 45:45Speaker 5: I don't think there's a hammer team in the AL league.
- 45:48Speaker 5: They don't have to face the Dodgers until the end.
- 45:51Speaker 5: They don't have to face the Brewers until the end.
- 45:53Speaker 5: I don't really worry about some of those other AL
- 45:55Speaker 5: teams for the first.
- 45:56Speaker 6: Round of the playoffs.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Well, it could be the Red Sox.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Yes.
- 45:59Speaker 4: And throw out the books. Forget all the stats. I
- 46:02Speaker 4: don't care what your ERA is. You don't want to
- 46:05Speaker 4: lose that series, Paul. That's where you want Aaron Judge.
- 46:07Speaker 6: You sure don't.
- 46:08Speaker 5: All right, it's time for a little constructive criticism. I
- 46:11Speaker 5: wasn't told what this is about.
- 46:12Speaker 6: I usually know. Let's take a look. Your feedback from
- 46:14Speaker 6: yesterday's show. Here we go. A little constructive criticism for us,
- 46:18Speaker 6: Pabst and Perloff. Dark Salmon. What could this be referring to? Oh,
- 46:23Speaker 6: this shirt.
- 46:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that is my man shirt from yesterday that I
- 46:27Speaker 5: wore on the show. A lot of people guessed Salmon.
- 46:29Speaker 3: What is Dark Salmon? That's out of color.
- 46:32Speaker 5: It is, unless it's like a Benjamin Moore paint color
- 46:34Speaker 5: for a room. Dark Salmon, hun? I'm proud of the shirt.
- 46:38Speaker 5: Some people say I shouldn't be. Burnt or Smoky Crimson?
- 46:41Speaker 3: Again, I don't know. Is burnt crimson a color?
- 46:44Speaker 5: Smoky crimson sounds like a band from the 60s.
- 46:46Speaker 3: What are the Texas Longhorns? That's burnt orange. Burnt orange. Yeah,
- 46:49Speaker 3: hook them. Mauve?
- 46:51Speaker 10: No.
- 46:51Speaker 6: Yeah, that's not manly enough. I need all the manliness
- 46:54Speaker 6: I can get.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Figgy pink.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Actually, that is an insult, but that's not the color either.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Maybe I'm seeing differently in person. It's not pink. It's
- 47:04Speaker 4: not salmon. It's not brown.
- 47:06Speaker 3: It's somewhere in between all of those.
- 47:08Speaker 5: So we have decided nothing with the shirt. But we
- 47:10Speaker 5: got thousands of responses, which is really weird. Follow Not
- 47:13Speaker 5: So Fast on Twitter, and we'll get more great content
- 47:15Speaker 5: like that every day from our awesome SuperDuper social media team.
- 47:18Speaker 5: It's time for the feel-good, Perloff, and this one's fantastic.
- 47:21Speaker 5: I saw this the other day. Vikings defensive back.
- 47:24Speaker 6: Check this out.
- 47:25Speaker 5: Isaiah Rogers. Here he is in the end zone. What's
- 47:28Speaker 5: he doing there, Perl? That is the hot diggity dog dance.
- 47:31Speaker 5: And the reason he did it, because his son likes
- 47:33Speaker 5: it at the pool.
- 47:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 47:35Speaker 6: That's father of the year type stuff.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, did he.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Need to make a great play, which happened a lot
- 47:40Speaker 4: against Chicago on Sunday, to do that?
- 47:43Speaker 3: Because you need the excuse to actually do the dance.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Well, I don't think if Isaiah Rogers had a tackle
- 47:47Speaker 5: on like third and one, he could hot diggity dog
- 47:49Speaker 5: it right there on the field.
- 47:50Speaker 6: He needed to go to the end zone so it
- 47:51Speaker 6: doesn't get flagged.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Can you do said dance? You're like the best flosser
- 47:55Speaker 3: I know.
- 47:55Speaker 5: I can do the hot diggity dog among other dances,
- 47:58Speaker 5: but unfortunately, we're just out of time.
- 48:00Speaker 3: Oh, come on. The other day, you were showing me
- 48:02Speaker 3: how you used to breakdance.
- 48:03Speaker 5: Break dance, two-step, step dancing, it all happens here on
- 48:07Speaker 5: Not So Fast.
- 48:08Speaker 10: Tune in.
- 48:08Speaker 6: You never know when it may happen. Probably not today.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Ballroom dancing?
- 48:12Speaker 5: Ballroom dancing. My wife tried to get me to do that.
- 48:16Speaker 5: Final 60 seconds. Giant situation. Make the call today. Do
- 48:20Speaker 5: they go with another quarterback and press the issue or
- 48:22Speaker 5: stay with what they have?
- 48:23Speaker 4: There is a trade in the NFL by Thursday for
- 48:26Speaker 4: the Giants to bring in another veteran quarterback.
- 48:28Speaker 3: I mean, they need depth. Obviously, Jameis Winston is not
- 48:31Speaker 3: enough to get you through.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Are you saying the Jameis Winston era is over already?
- 48:34Speaker 5: Because you're breaking some hearts.
- 48:35Speaker 3: No, he starts in week two.
- 48:37Speaker 4: I'm really curious. Do they take a flyer on J.J. McCarthy,
- 48:41Speaker 4: who has some upside? Six-round pick?
- 48:43Speaker 3: That can't hurt. John Harbaugh, Jim Harbaugh, Michigan, J.J.
- 48:48Speaker 5: Hear more about this on the Dan Pat Show tomorrow morning,
- 48:50Speaker 5: and then come out and hang with us on Not
- 48:51Speaker 5: So Fast with Taps and Pearl.
- 48:53Speaker 6: Have a good night.
- 48:53Speaker 3: We're done.
