- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely! I've been looking forward to this. What are we learning today? Lucas: Well, last time we bought MTR tickets. Today, let's talk about something really useful — describing how you feel when you're sick. Luna: Oh, that's smart. Nobody plans to get sick, but it happens. Lucas: Exactly. So today's phrases are all about symptoms. Let's start simple. If your head hurts, you say: 我頭痛. Luna: 我頭痛. That sounds like 'ngo tau tung'. Lucas: Good try! 我頭痛 — slow it down: 我 頭 痛. I head pain. Luna: 我頭痛. Got it. So if I have a headache, I say 我頭痛. Lucas: Perfect. Now, what if you have a fever? Say: 我發燒. Luna: 我發燒. That's 'ngo faat siu'. Lucas: Yep. 發燒 means 'to have a fever'. So 我發燒. I have a fever. Luna: 我發燒. Okay. What about coughing? Lucas: Good question. For a cough, you can say: 我有啲咳. That means 'I have a bit of a cough'. Luna: 我有啲咳. 'Ngo jau di kat'. Lucas: Yes! 有啲 means 'have a little'. So 我有啲咳 — I have a little cough. Luna: What if you feel generally unwell? Lucas: Then you can say: 我唔舒服. 'I'm not comfortable' or 'I feel unwell'. Luna: 我唔舒服. 'Ngo m syu fuk'. That one's easy to remember. Lucas: And if your stomach hurts: 我肚痛. Luna: 我肚痛. 'Ngo tou tung'. So stomach pain is 肚痛. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick review. Headache? Luna: 我頭痛. Lucas: Fever? Luna: 我發燒. Lucas: Cough? Luna: 我有啲咳. Lucas: Feeling unwell? Luna: 我唔舒服. Lucas: Stomach ache? Luna: 我肚痛. Lucas: Awesome. Now imagine you're at a clinic. The doctor might ask: 你邊度唔舒服? 'Where are you uncomfortable?'. Luna: 你邊度唔舒服. So I respond with one of these phrases. Lucas: Right. Like you could say: 我頭痛, 我發燒. Or maybe both. Luna: Let's practice a mini dialogue. I'll be the doctor. Lucas: Okay! Go ahead. Luna: 你邊度唔舒服? Lucas: 我頭痛同埋我有啲咳. Luna: Wow, you added '同埋' — that means 'and'. So you said 'I have a headache and a little cough'. Nice! Lucas: Exactly. You can combine them. So 我頭痛同埋我有啲咳. Luna: I love that. It feels like I'm actually talking to a doctor in Cantonese now. Lucas: That's the goal! Let's do one more review. Repeat after me: 我頭痛. Luna: 我頭痛. Lucas: 我發燒. Luna: 我發燒. Lucas: 我有啲咳. Luna: 我有啲咳. Lucas: 我唔舒服. Luna: 我唔舒服. Lucas: 我肚痛. Luna: 我肚痛. Lucas: You've got them. Now, you know, learning these phrases can really come in handy. One more phrase: if you feel dizzy, you can say 我頭暈. Luna: 我頭暈. 'Ngo tau wan'. Dizzy. That's easy too. Lucas: Great. So now you have six symptom phrases you can use at a clinic. Let's do a quick call-back to our MTR episode: imagine you're feeling unwell on the MTR and need to tell someone. You could say: 我唔舒服. Luna: Or 我頭痛 if your head hurts. Lucas: Right. Keep practicing these and you'll be ready to describe your symptoms in Cantonese. Thanks for joining us today! Luna: See you next time! Keep practicing.
