- 2:13we do, a lot that we want to do, and we provide
- 2:16opportunities for others to learn broadcasting.
- 2:20and other related technologies. This is one
- 2:24of our shows that we really enjoy doing called
- 2:26The Big Announcement Show, where we bring
- 2:29someone on the show to help them make a big
- 2:34announcement. And today, we have Deneen L.
- 2:38Garrett as our guest. Hi, Deneen. How are
- 2:42you?
- 2:42Hi, Leon. I'm well.
- 2:45Right on. It's good to have you here on The
- 2:48Big announcement show. So, Daneen, tell us.
- 2:53Don't tell us the announcement yet. It's
- 2:57not time. I know you've been waiting. You've
- 3:00been posting on LinkedIn and everywhere saying,
- 3:03I got something for y'all to know. But I'm
- 3:06not telling you yet until today, right? But
- 3:10don't tell them, but tell them, tell everyone
- 3:12some things you've been doing, some things
- 3:14that you do that maybe would lead up to this
- 3:17announcement, but don't tell them yet. Go
- 3:18ahead, take a couple of minutes and tell
- 3:20us some things you've been working on.
- 3:21Okay. So to tell you a little bit about myself.
- 3:23So I describe myself as a cultural alchemist.
- 3:28I shift shape culture through storytelling.
- 3:31So through writing, through speaking, through
- 3:33coaching, and through my podcast, which happens
- 3:36to be a 100 Best Women's Empowerment Podcast.
- 3:41And also I just launched something brand
- 3:44new that I'm working on that I'm very excited
- 3:46about. And that is the Dream Lifestyle Collective,
- 3:50which is a community, a sanctuary for Black
- 3:53women, 50 plus. So we are, our doors are
- 3:57open, you know, and we are welcoming women,
- 4:00Black women who are 50 and up to come in
- 4:02and join.
- 4:04So wait a minute now. Let's go back one second
- 4:07here. Let's go back a second. You said your
- 4:11podcast is a top 100. Yeah. OK. That's true.
- 4:18That's true. It is a top 100. But it's closer
- 4:24to the top. It's like 19. Yes. But I know
- 4:28you're humble and didn't want to say. I can
- 4:30say that.
- 4:31Right.
- 4:32It's good for me to say. I can say that.
- 4:34This is, Denine hosts a Top 20 podcast, y'all.
- 4:39This is for real action when you get to the
- 4:41Top 20. So that is great. And Denine, what
- 4:44led you to do everything that you're doing
- 4:46now?
- 4:46Yeah, so in corporate prior to retiring,
- 4:51I was in diversity and inclusion and talent
- 4:53development. And back in like 2016, one of
- 4:59my segments was LGBTQ+, and I was preparing
- 5:02some colleagues to do a panel in person.
- 5:06And so the next year I was thinking, I'm
- 5:08like, you know what, there's a certain demographic
- 5:10that's missing. And so I pitched a panel
- 5:14for LGBTQ plus women of color and allies.
- 5:19I moderated that panel for three years straight.
- 5:21It was a well attended panel, you know, folks
- 5:25were so excited for it. And so at the end
- 5:28of 2019, someone said, Hey, what's next?
- 5:30And I said, a podcast. And so this is October
- 4:462019. Fast forward to 2020 before, you know,
- 5:39the world changed, but I still hadn't launched
- 5:43the podcast. And I realized this was a Thursday.
- 5:46I had a conversation with a coach. He was
- 5:49telling me, he's like, you know what, people
- 5:50need to hear, hear what you have to say.
- 5:53And he said to me that He and I could say
- 5:55the same thing, but it would, you know, it
- 5:58would resonate with certain people for me
- 6:00versus him type thing. Okay, cool. Hung out
- 6:03with him, got on a treadmill, was reading
- 6:05a book. The first time I ever read, first
- 6:07and last time I ever read anything by Brene
- 6:09Brown. And the first word that stood out
- 6:11to me was vulnerability. And it hit, it resonated.
- 6:16I had a fear of being vulnerable and that's
- 6:18what kept me from launching a podcast. So
- 6:21the very next day, April 10, 2020, which
- 6:24was Good Friday, I Nike'd it and just did
- 6:28it. And I launched my podcast and this year
- 6:31we turned six.
- 6:33Wow. Right on. Congratulations to you. And
- 6:36I love the term. I just Nike'd it.
- 6:40Yes.
- 6:41And just, just did it. For everyone watching
- 6:44and listening, let that be something that
- 6:47resonates with you. If there's something
- 6:49you want to do, that something's been placed
- 6:51in your heart, God's placed something in
- 6:53your mind, you don't have to have everything
- 6:56right. Just do it. Just get going. So I hope
- 7:02anyone, someone watching and listening is
- 7:04thinking about doing their thing, whatever
- 7:06that is, that you go, you know what? Why
- 7:09not me? Why shouldn't I do it? Just do it.
- 7:13So I'm really, really happy that you did
- 7:16that, Deneen. Now, folks, you're here for
- 7:18the big announcement. You're watching the
- 7:19big announcement show. I'm Leon Thomas with
- 7:21the Leon Thomas Group here with Deneen L.
- 7:25Garrett. Deneen has an announcement. It's
- 7:28coming up. Just wait. I know it's 1 o'clock
- 7:31on the East Coast. You're probably just finishing
- 7:34lunch. Look, it's Thursday afternoon. You're
- 7:37not doing any work anyway.
- 7:39Right.
- 7:39It's free Friday. Just be real. If you're
- 7:44on the West Coast, it's like 5 after 10.
- 7:47If you're watching from Alaska or Hawaii,
- 7:49put in the comment that you are watching
- 7:52from Alaska and Hawaii and tell us what time
- 7:54it is. But it's Thursday. So y'all stick
- 7:56around. Because Deneen has a really big announcement.
- 8:00Deneen, before the show, we were talking
- 8:03with our producer, who's doing a great job
- 8:05in the background, always does for us. Leon
- 8:08Thomas Group, Oren Stewart. And we were talking
- 8:11a little bit about sports. And I asked this
- 8:14question. I mean, we don't have the tape
- 8:16to roll it. But the question I asked was,
- 8:20are you a Detroit Piston fan? And the answer
- 8:24was and is.
- 8:26The answer is, I'm a Detroit fan.
- 8:31So you are a Piston fan.
- 8:34I'm a fan of the city. So Pistons is a Detroit
- 8:37team. Yes. Tigers is a Detroit team. Yes.
- 8:42Lions is a Detroit team. Yes. Red Wings.
- 8:46So yes, I'm going to ride for that. I'm going
- 8:49to rock those. However, all things Detroit.
- 8:52That's me.
- 8:52OK. All right. Right on. All things Detroit.
- 8:55I live in Baltimore. I am a Ravens fan. My
- 8:59wife is an Orioles fan. If we could afford
- 9:01season tickets, we would be at every Oriole
- 9:03game. Okay. But we're not here to talk about
- 9:07sports. We're just talking about each other
- 9:08a little bit. Tell us some things you like
- 9:10to do away from work, Denise. What do you
- 9:13like to do?
- 9:14Yeah. So travel is number one. And actually,
- 9:16if you can see my shirt, it's Live a Dream
- 9:18Lifestyle. which is a decision that I made
- 9:22in 2022. You know how you start the year
- 9:26and you choose a word for the year and mine
- 9:28happened to be live. And I saw this tweet
- 9:31and somebody said, and yes, it was still
- 9:33Twitter. Someone said, go beyond, you know,
- 9:36the dream cars, the dream houses and focus
- 9:39on the dream lifestyle. So I put it together.
- 9:42And so for 2022, Live a Dream Lifestyle became
- 9:46how I lived. And now it's also part of my
- 9:50business is what I empower women of color
- 9:53to do is what I do through the podcast, is
- 9:56what I do through speaking, writing, all
- 9:59things is about empowering women to live
- 10:01a dream lifestyle. Different women, people
- 10:05in general, they have different ways of living
- 10:07their dream lifestyle. And for me, again,
- 10:09number one is travel. Number two would be
- 10:12like attending events, exhibitions, and then
- 10:15art. So for me to go travel to an art exhibition,
- 10:20I'm in heaven. And I do it all the time.
- 10:22I travel a lot for art.
- 10:25OK, right on. Now, I also know that you're
- 10:28traveling for something big. Oh yeah. You
- 10:43have a big trip coming up where you've been,
- 10:46what do they call it? Media credentialed
- 10:48to a big event. Tell us about that.
- 10:50Yeah, absolutely. And you know what? So I
- 10:52posted about this. And everything for me
- 10:55is like a journey. That's why I say I'm a
- 10:57cultural alchemist and a storyteller because
- 11:00the way that my life has, you know, Come
- 11:03about is to tell a story to share with somebody
- 11:06a journey my journey. So we talked about
- 11:08the podcast, you know, I finally launched
- 11:10it after realizing that I had a fear being
- 11:13vulnerable and said, you know, forget all
- 11:15that and let's go ahead and move forward.
- 11:17So I've attended this event. two different
- 11:20times, each time I was a corporate guest.
- 11:24And I said, you know what, when I come back,
- 11:26I'm coming back and I'm going to be on a
- 11:28stage or whatever. So not quite there yet.
- 11:32However, I am returning to the Women of Power
- 11:37Summit, and that's hosted by Black Enterprise,
- 11:40That is March 11 through 15, and I am attending
- 11:44as press. I have credentials as press, and
- 11:48yes, through my top 20 podcast.
- 11:51There you go. Right on. That is great. Congratulations
- 11:55to you. Thank you. That is great. And I also,
- 11:59typically for events like that, you're allowed
- 12:02to have someone else come with you, right?
- 12:03As a photographer, videographer, or something,
- 12:06right? When you get to that level, that means
- 12:09people are recognizing your work. That is
- 12:12what that means. People are recognizing what
- 12:15you do and the impact that it has.
- 12:19And I'm glad you said that because I actually
- 12:22do have someone attending with me. I was
- 12:25able to bring an additional person as media
- 12:28support. And my media support, what I love
- 12:30about that is that she's part of the collective
- 12:33that I talked about. So she is actually she's
- 12:35the first member of the Dream Lifestyle Collective.
- 12:38And she and I have known each other for a
- 12:40number of years because we both worked for
- 12:42the same company. But Gia Warren, she is
- 12:45a she is meeting me there And she is you
- 12:49know, so we're gonna do some behind-the-scenes
- 12:50some BTS, you know, she's walking around
- 12:52with the with the phone And recording what's
- 12:55going on as I'm taking things in so that
- 12:57I can write about it later In Gia. Yes.
- 13:02I'm gonna tell you a little bit more about
- 13:03Gia after the announcement You know our producer
- 13:09or is back there he had he had his finger
- 13:11on the keys he was like Yeah, he was he was
- 13:17ready he was ready But yeah, so folks we're
- 13:21almost at announcement time. Here's what
- 13:23we're gonna do, right? We're gonna show a
- 13:25short we're gonna take a short break and
- 13:29Show a piece that talks some about the Leon
- 13:31Thomas group and then when we come back from
- 13:35this short break Danine L Garrett will tell
- 13:42us the information she wants you to know.
- 13:46She will tell us the big announcement. You're
- 13:50watching The Big Announcement Show. I'm Leon
- 13:52Thomas here with Daneen L. Garrett. We'll
- 13:56be right back.
- 14:10I'm Leon Thomas with the Leon Thomas Group.
- 14:13Podcasts, virtual events, webinars, streaming
- 14:18shows, and so much more. We want to be your
- 14:21partner in all things virtual.
- 14:32Hey, welcome back to the Big Announcement
- 14:34Show. Again, Leon Thomas with the Leon Thomas
- 14:37Group. To learn more about us, go to our
- 14:39website. theleonthomasgroup.com here with
- 14:43Deneen L. Garrett. Deneen, we're 15 minutes
- 14:48into the show. Folks have been waiting for
- 14:50a couple of weeks, maybe three weeks or more.
- 14:54It is now time for, wait a minute, can I
- 14:58get a drum roll, please? Ooh, nice. You've
- 15:03been rehearsing that.
- 15:04That was good.
- 15:09It is now time for the big announcement.
- 15:12Denine, tell us the big announcement.
- 15:14All right. So I kind of teased it when I
- 15:17said my podcast is turning six. What I did
- 15:21mention is that about a year or so ago, I
- 15:24prayed to level up in my podcast. And earlier
- 15:28in the year, when I announced about the Dream
- 15:30Lifestyle Collective, which is a collective,
- 15:33a community for Black women 50 and up, Leon
- 15:36responded. And he's like, I love what you're
- 15:38doing. I want to support you. I want to work
- 15:42with you. And so that collaboration, which
- 15:45I'm going to announce now, is starting next
- 15:49week, next Thursday, March 5th, 1 p.m. Eastern,
- 15:53here, wherever you are, however you're tapping
- 15:55in, a woman of color will be live. Yay! Every
- 16:01week live. Now that is huge. That is huge
- 16:05because we're live, we're being produced
- 16:07by the Leon Thomas group, and I am so excited
- 16:11to take things to the next level.
- 16:13Right on. Congratulations and thank you for
- 16:16having the Leon Thomas Group as your partner
- 16:19on this. We're very, very happy to do that,
- 16:22happy for what you're doing, and just thrilled
- 16:25to death to be a part of this. And Daneen,
- 16:27tell us about, now, this is live every Thursday
- 16:32at 1 p.m. Eastern. Tell us about some of
- 16:36the guests you have coming on, the types
- 16:38of conversations we should expect to to see
- 16:41right here on the show. Tell us, give us
- 16:42a little, a little insider information.
- 16:45Yeah, absolutely. So the podcast itself has
- 16:47always been about empowering women of color,
- 16:49right? It initially was a platform for women
- 16:52of color to use their voices And then also
- 16:55morphed into empowering women of color to
- 16:58live dream lifestyles when I decided that
- 17:00that was my focus. And I wanted more women
- 17:03to live that way as well. I didn't want anyone
- 17:05to wait until they retired to say, oh, no,
- 17:08I want to start doing this, doing that. No,
- 17:10I wanted to promote for women to tap into
- 17:13what brings them joy and to do more of that.
- 17:16So that's what it's been about. That's what
- 17:18the podcast has been about. My guests are
- 17:20women of color who talk about their various
- 17:23journeys, all different walks of life, PhDs,
- 17:28doctors, non-doctors, just regular people.
- 17:32If you're a woman of color, you're welcome
- 17:35on the show. With this new elevation, we're
- 17:39always going to center women of color. That
- 17:41is the center. Women of color, black women,
- 17:44that's the focus. That's the center. So I
- 17:46am having conversations and will have conversations
- 17:49with people who may not fit that demographic.
- 17:52But as long as you are centering women of
- 17:55color, black women, we can have a conversation.
- 17:58You're welcome to be on the live.
- 18:01All right. That is that is great. And as
- 18:04I'm thinking now, Um, I could see some guests
- 18:08that, that may fit in certain industries,
- 18:11right. That are, that may be underserved
- 18:13by, by black women, that black women have
- 18:15to really work together to move up. I'm retired
- 18:19from the hospitality business. And I'll tell
- 18:21you when I went to hotel conferences, right.
- 18:25When I started, I saw very few black people
- 18:29at all. Right. Then I'd see, see a few, a
- 18:33few black people. But then Hilton Hotels
- 18:37hired a vice president of marketing who was
- 18:42a black lady.
- 18:44Love it.
- 18:45And you talk about the pride that I felt
- 18:48in seeing her on the stage talking about
- 18:51her work. But then there was no one else
- 18:55for her to really connect with. There were
- 18:58no other or very few other black women there.
- 19:02Way back then, I started thinking, wouldn't
- 19:05it be great if Black women got together and
- 19:07did things and supported each other and helped
- 19:10each other make it, right? And man, this
- 19:13is so great. Daneen, this is good, good stuff.
- 19:17So now the show starts next Thursday at 1
- 19:22p.m. Eastern. So wherever you're watching
- 19:26this, If you're watching live, you can watch
- 19:29live here. If you're watching the recording
- 19:31because you decided to work today instead
- 19:34of watch the show, why you would do that?
- 19:39If you're a college student, ideally, This
- 19:44is for women over 50. But if you're a college
- 19:46student and you're in your 20s and you happen
- 19:48to see this, why did you go to class today?
- 19:50You knew about the announcement. I'm joking.
- 19:53Go to class. Go to class. Go to class. But,
- 19:56but here's the, here's the big thing. Wherever
- 19:58you're watching this, if you're watching
- 20:00on a recording on Thursday night, Friday
- 20:02morning, you can still watch it again Thursday
- 20:05night, Friday morning on the recording. Okay.
- 20:07So the show is going to be, now, Deneen,
- 20:09so let's see. You said in a couple weeks,
- 20:13you're going to be in Vegas.
- 20:14Oh, yeah.
- 20:15So does that mean you're doing the show from
- 20:18Vegas?
- 20:19That is correct. So yes, I will be in Vegas
- 20:23for the second show. And my guest is actually
- 20:27my guest. She's in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
- 20:30So I will be in Vegas. in having a conversation
- 20:33with someone who was in beautiful, sunny,
- 20:36hot, circle by water, St. Thomas, Virgin
- 20:41Islands. And that's who I'm having a conversation
- 20:43with. But yeah, I'll be in Vegas. And then
- 20:45the following week, Gia, who I mentioned,
- 20:48almost let it out early, Gia and I will have
- 20:51a conversation here and we'll kind of recap
- 20:53our experience at the Women of Color Summit.
- 20:56That is great. You talk about worldwide.
- 20:59Oh, right. You're in Vegas. Your guest is
- 21:03in St. Thomas. The show's and somehow the
- 21:06tech is going to bring it all together and
- 21:08it's going to go all over the world. This
- 21:10is good stuff.
- 21:11Yeah. And you know what? And so you mentioned
- 21:13that. And absolutely, the podcast itself
- 21:15is global, has been global for a number of
- 21:17years. And the women of the Dream Lifestyle
- 21:21Collective is a global collective as well.
- 21:24I have members in London, Rome and then,
- 21:27of course, throughout the US and We're looking
- 21:29to expand that footprint. You're welcome.
- 21:34The collective itself is for Black women
- 21:1150 and up. The podcast, the focus is for
- 21:40women of color in general. So it doesn't
- 21:42matter your age, but it's for women of color
- 21:44in general, especially Black women. And again,
- 21:47the collective, the Dream Lifestyle Collective
- 21:50is for 50 and up.
- 21:52Right on. This is great. I think our producers
- 21:56ready to go. to display your website, right?
- 21:59So you can kind of direct our producer Orin
- 22:02through the, through the website and he'll
- 22:04bring it up on the screen here. So folks
- 22:05can take a look at, at the website.
- 22:10So here is the entry point. When you go to
- 22:12deninogarrett.com, this is what you'll see.
- 22:15You'll scroll down and just keep scrolling
- 22:19because then you get to the podcast and then
- 22:22you can click to get to the podcast from
- 22:24there. Keep going. Now, if you are interested
- 22:28in having me as a guest, there is an entry
- 22:30point to request me. And if you want to be
- 22:33a guest, there's an entry point to register
- 22:36as a guest. And then you'll be able to choose
- 22:38your Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern to be on
- 22:42the show. And we'll move forward from there.
- 22:46Also, go back up. and click over to Dream
- 22:52Lifestyle Collective. And that's where you'll
- 22:54learn a little bit more about the community
- 22:57for Black women 50 and up. So keep scrolling
- 22:59down. You get to read a little bit about
- 23:01who it's for, which I've shared. And then
- 23:04you click at the bottom, and it will actually
- 23:06take you to the platform that houses the
- 23:08community. And then you'll have an opportunity
- 23:11to join and join with other Black women 50
- 23:14and up. Another reason that I started this
- 23:19collective, again, it was a natural progression
- 23:22from what I was already doing, but seeing
- 23:25so many Black women being displaced, being
- 23:28ousted, over 350,000 Black women last year
- 23:33alone, was another reason why I wanted to
- 23:35create this space because I want, as Leon
- 23:38talked about, I wanted a community for us.
- 23:41I wanted that safe space for us to come and
- 23:43talk and learn and share and then grow together,
- 23:48building that legacy.
- 23:51This is outstanding. And you've emphasized
- 23:54that it's for the Dream Lifestyle Collective
- 23:56is for Black women over 50. And I'm thinking
- 23:59about my family.
- 24:00Yeah.
- 24:01Right. Now, I don't know how much we've talked
- 24:03about this. My family, we just live forever.
- 24:08I had an aunt who passed away two years ago
- 24:11at 105.
- 24:12That's beautiful.
- 24:14Another one passed away in October at 100.
- 24:16I have an uncle who's 102. And then we have
- 24:19the baby. She's only 90. OK. Right? She's
- 24:25only 90. But I will tell you, my aunt that
- 24:28was 105, she would have become a member of
- 24:34the Dream Lifestyle Club. OK. She would have
- 24:38done it. Yes, Aunt Marion would have been
- 24:41here because she believed that black people
- 24:46need to be together, period. She used to
- 24:50upset her when she would see our people fighting
- 24:55with each other verbally or physically. It
- 24:57would drive her nuts. She said, we need to
- 24:59come together and have some conversation,
- 25:02y'all. We need to support each other. I could
- 25:04just see her as a guest on your show. I'm
- 25:07going to contact one of my cousins to see
- 25:10if they will come on to even talk about her
- 25:13legacy.
- 25:14I would love that. And where are we going
- 25:16to go to get started?
- 25:17Where are you going to go? You're going to
- 25:18go to thedeninelgarrett.com.
- 25:20That's right. And you're going to scroll
- 25:22down to register as a guest. Yeah.
- 25:24You're going to go right there and go as
- 25:26a guest. And you click the button, and then
- 25:28it goes on in.
- 25:29Right, right. You fill in some things. Yes.
- 25:31And then you get the announcement. There
