- 0:00Hello, welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:02I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson and this is John W Welch.
- 0:05And we get to start the book of second Nephi, chapter One and
- 0:08two today, these fabulous chapters of Lehigh's farewell.
- 0:13This second Nephi is an amazing book, Lynn.
- 0:16But it's so different than first Nephi you know.
- 0:18What What do you like about second Nephi well?
- 0:20I sort of feel like first Nephi is stories and action and
- 0:24details. It's something like someone
- 0:25who's adolescent would enjoy it, where a second Nephi has a lot
- 0:28of deep doctrine for mature people to say what do you do
- 0:31when expectations are not met and how do you stay attached?
- 0:35And 2nd Nephi is so filled with Christ.
- 0:38The second Nephi is just an amazing book.
- 0:41Many people get through first Nephi a number of times, but
- 0:45then they start hitting these doctrinal sections.
- 0:48And of course there are a lot of Isaiah chapters, and we'll talk
- 0:51about the structure. It's not that it's a random
- 0:54book, it's very carefully planned, but it's it's also
- 0:58spending a lot of time looking at future events and talking
- 1:03about philosophical and theological concepts.
- 1:07Where first Nephi was was action-packed you.
- 1:15Know. In fact I even wrote up a little
- 1:16slide that describes the difference between 1st and 2nd
- 1:20Nephi. I start out with the dates you
- 1:22know. I don't know when Lehi is 1st
- 1:23called. I know they leave Jerusalem in
- 1:25600 BC, but is it one or two years serving as a prophet?
- 1:29I don't know. But he goes up before the
- 1:30temple's destroyed. The temple's destroyed in 586
- 1:33and that starts with second Nephi.
- 1:35So I think first Nephi is just this small few years here.
- 1:39Not only do we have faith building stories and focus on
- 1:42the current events that are consistent with what we read in
- 1:45the Old Testament in Second Kings, but Lehigh and his family
- 1:48escape murder and the family then become sort of an exodus
- 1:52sort of patterning Moses exodus, you know and other family units
- 1:56joined together. We've got Ishmael's family and
- 1:59Zoram coming in sibling rivalry. They have so many challenges
- 2:04physically that they are delivered from.
- 2:06Yeah, like you say, a lot of the problems that Israel faced in
- 2:10leaving Egypt, Lehi's family faces that in leaving Jerusalem.
- 2:15And I think in first Nephi Nephi tries to ride it that way to
- 2:18even make those parallels. In first Nephi, Lehi's family
- 2:22left and now Nephi's family in a few chapters.
- 2:25In second Nephi chapter 5, his family will have to leave.
- 2:28But then in second Nephi, it's like we've now crossed the the
- 2:32Red Sea. It's of course the ocean and
- 2:35we've arrived at the promised land.
- 2:37In parallel to the sibling rivalry, in Second Nephi, we
- 2:40have the example of Jacob's righteousness, and Jacob is
- 2:44phenomenal in his understanding of our savior.
- 2:47I love Jacob's words on the Lord.
- 2:50And then as in first Nephi we had a physical deliverance.
- 2:54Now in second Nephi we have a spiritual deliverance.
- 2:57You had mentioned before that a lot of the words are paralleled
- 3:01and I noticed in first Nephi chapter one, Lehi is prophesying
- 3:04that Jerusalem will be destroyed but God has mercies.
- 3:08The exact same words are used in second Nephi chapter one, verse
- 3:12two. You know, he's talking about
- 3:13Jerusalem being destroyed and then he refers to God's mercies.
- 3:17And I think that makes a strong point that Nephi is wanting to
- 3:22preserve the legacy of Lehigh in as many ways as he can.
- 3:26And one of them is to now apply Lehigh's prophecies and
- 3:31statements which had applied to the old world and now also
- 3:35applicable in the new in the new world.
- 3:38So they become foundational and Nephi.
- 3:40Then who knows that he needs to be and will be blessed by Lehigh
- 3:46to be the spokesman and the leader?
- 3:50And Nephi had already been promised that he would become a
- 3:54leader over his brothers back in first Nephi chapter 2.
- 3:59And so Nephi knows that he has to carry out this responsibility
- 4:04with the visions that he's had. If Lehmann and Lemuel are left
- 4:07in charge, the whole purpose of the exodus exodus by Lehi's
- 4:12family isn't going to, isn't going to play out.
- 4:14Sadly, sadly. So Nephi wants that authority
- 4:18that he is indeed the successor of his father Lehi.
- 4:23You had talked to me before about the outline being chiastic
- 4:26in the whole book of Just as loose Chias in the whole book of
- 4:30Second Nephi. And so I wrote down a little
- 4:32outline starting with Lehi's farewell blessing is Posterity.
- 4:36And then the beautiful chapter 2 on agency and redemption in the
- 4:40Fall. And then the writings from
- 4:43Joseph in chapter 3 and Nephi's Psalm in chapter 4, the Nephite
- 4:47separating in chapter 5, Jacob 6.
- 4:50This two day sermon and Nephi's third witness all the Isaiah
- 4:55chapters that that Christ is the Redeemer of Israel, and then
- 5:00Nephi's interpretation of that. And once I realized that I had
- 5:06to put this outline in some sort of a chiastic structure, the
- 5:10ending of Nephi's farewell began paralleling with Lehi's
- 5:15farewell. And I was fascinated that if the
- 5:19center of the poetry, the organization, if the center part
- 5:21is most important, isn't it interesting that it's Isaiah?
- 5:25Well, it is. And Isaiah of course is the
- 5:27heart of second Nephi, But Jacob and Nephi are on the flanks.
- 5:33And what Nephi begins in second Nephi Chapter 11 by saying is we
- 5:39have to have three witnesses, because in the mouth of two or
- 5:43three witnesses God will establish all things.
- 5:45Quoting Deuteronomy. So Jacob, Nephi and Isaiah
- 5:49become the three witnesses. And we'll get to that in a few
- 5:52weeks. We aren't quite there yet, but I
- 5:53I think that looking, zooming out and seeing the whole
- 5:57structure will help us as we dive in now to the beautiful
- 6:01patterns that we're going to see of the same messages that we saw
- 6:04in first Nephi, but now in a different.
- 6:07Light and I I think it always helps to try to get into the
- 6:10mind and condition and the context of the author.
- 6:14Why is Nephi writing this book? When is he writing it?
- 6:18And we'll see that as we go along throughout the whole book.
- 6:21And he's not just writing it in one sitting, I think to some
- 6:25extent at the beginning with the building of the temple.
- 6:29And that's still 30 years after they left Jerusalem, though.
- 6:31That's right, yeah. But still, he does a lot of
- 6:34writing then. And then he will finish it.
- 6:37At the end of his life, which is then like 40 years since they
- 6:40left Jerusalem. So you have those 10 years
- 6:42covered by second Nephi. Well, do you want to dive into
- 6:45the text? Let's do This is the only book
- 6:53in the Book of Mormon that has one author separating his book
- 6:59into two. But he's still talking about his
- 7:03father. And I love the fact that it's
- 7:05Lehigh as blessings that begin this book, this beautiful
- 7:10tradition in the old world of patriarchal blessings.
- 7:13We get it from Jacob. We get it all the way down that
- 7:16when people have received blessings, actually Isaac gives
- 7:19blessings. We actually have two different
- 7:22kinds of blessings here. There are, you might saw, say,
- 7:27patriarchal blessings, which we are blessed to have in the
- 7:30church, where you go to a patriarch who gives you a
- 7:35blessing. But there are also fathers.
- 7:39Blessings. And I think it's interesting to
- 7:41compare what we have in Genesis chapter 49 with what we have in
- 7:47second Nephi chapters 123IN. In a sense, what we have in
- 7:53Second Nephi, our father's blessings.
- 7:58Where Lehigh as a father is blessing his individual
- 8:02children, dividing his estate, giving people their assignments
- 8:06within the family, knowing that Lehigh himself will not be
- 8:10there, wanting to be sure that he can somehow keep Lehmann and
- 8:15Lemuel part of the family but give Nephi some kind of
- 8:20leadership authority. So Lehi gives a rather unusual
- 8:24blessing by saying to Lehmann, Lemuel and the others that are
- 8:30with him, you will have. My first blessing, whatever that
- 8:34is, as long as you listen to and obey Nephi.
- 8:38Didn't go over too well though, Jack.
- 8:40Well, it didn't, but I think in Lehigh's mind he's trying to say
- 8:46you can be administrators, you can have the first blessing of
- 8:50the double portion of the property, but you must listen,
- 8:53listen to Nephi for spiritual guidance.
- 8:58So I think he sees a distinction there.
- 9:01It gives Lehman and Lemuel an option and a possibility of
- 9:04actually following righteously, but being also not subservient
- 9:10to Nephi in Genesis chapter 49, we have the precedent of a
- 9:16blessing by the Patriarch Jacob. So father's blessing and
- 9:20patriarchal blessings together. And the patriarchal blessing of
- 9:24Jacob gives kind of a designation of the character and
- 9:28attributes of each of those 12 tribes.
- 9:31And many people aren't aware. But Moses will give another kind
- 9:35of blessing at the end of the book of Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy
- 9:39Chapter 33, where he will also bless the tribes, including the
- 9:45Levites, who are very importantly included there.
- 9:49But now he's giving not so much personal blessings, but
- 9:53characterizing the nature of each of those tribes.
- 9:56And what do you see in Lehigh? Well, in Lehigh it's kind of a
- 9:59mixture because he's trying to create a tribal structure and
- 10:03all the way through we will learn that there are 7 tribes
- 10:06and these 7 tribes continue. Mormon will mention the same 7
- 10:10tribes that are mentioned at the beginning of the book.
- 10:12Of Jacob. So we do have that establishment
- 10:15of the organizational structure of the the family and of the
- 10:19nation, but at the same time, we now have personal blessings.
- 10:22Yes. And we don't see that so much in
- 10:26the case of Lehmann and Lemuel's blessing, but Jacob and Joseph?
- 10:30Oh, these are wonderful personal blessings.
- 10:33Well, I think all of them are. And in fact, the way Nephi has
- 10:36written them out is interesting. Now you're the chiasmus king.
- 10:40But when I was going through just cutting and pasting,
- 10:43looking at these blessings separately, it was so fun to see
- 10:47how carefully he has paralleled some of their messages.
- 10:50I just wanted to give an example because I really feel like if
- 10:53you are reading second Nephi, look for parallels, look for
- 10:57patterns, Look for this as if it were written by a skilled author
- 11:01because it was Joseph Smith had no idea when he was translating
- 11:05what would the Lord would open up to a missionary's mind on
- 11:09these things. But starting in verse 13, you
- 11:11know, awake, shake off the awful chains of hell.
- 11:15And then in verse 14 arise from the dust.
- 11:19Verse 17 cut off, and they're going to be destroyed forever.
- 11:24And in verse 18, he talks about this cursing that's going to
- 11:27come upon them if they if, because they're going to leave
- 11:29the presence of God and in 18 and they're going to be in
- 11:32captivity of the devil. But in 20, the most important
- 11:36part of this section, he says, if you keep my commandments, you
- 11:40shall prosper in the land. That becomes a theme almost of
- 11:43all of Nephi's writings that we see over.
- 11:46And then the parallels come out. They'll be coming down into
- 11:50captivity. They're going to be cursed with
- 11:52a sore cursing. They have to awake and shake off
- 11:55the chains, and they have to arise in the dust.
- 11:57This is just one of hundreds of examples that you have found.
- 12:02I'm just so grateful for your efforts on this.
- 12:05What you have here in this particular chiasm is an effort
- 12:09to speak to all of them together, All of my sons.
- 12:13He will bless others individually, but I like the way
- 12:17he uses the Chiastic Completion. Chiasm has a sense of completion
- 12:23and wholeness about. It you know what the author's
- 12:25intent is. You know when he's beginning.
- 12:27You know when he's ending, yeah. And and a center point and in
- 12:30the same way, I think this has a sense of completion and
- 12:35fulfillment for the family and for everyone.
- 12:38It's it's inclusive. And I think the Book of Mormon
- 12:41is very inclusive. It includes all family members.
- 12:46Lehigh doesn't want to leave any of them out.
- 12:49He wants to point out the way that they can live, how they can
- 12:52succeed and be righteous. And he gives blessings as well
- 12:57as the cursings. I mean he he blesses everybody.
- 12:59You can do this. I I love what you said about
- 13:02it's multi generational. This blessing is not just for
- 13:04these seven it's for their children.
- 13:07And he gives another blessing, and then another.
- 13:09It's kind of constitutional in a way.
- 13:11OK, Yeah, Establishing giving principles.
- 13:15Foundational principles by which Righteous Nephites will succeed.
- 13:21All the way through the end of the book of Marmont.
- 13:24And the answer is to keep the commandments and you'll prosper
- 13:28in the land. And that keeping the
- 13:29commandments is a very important point.
- 13:33God here is giving to Lehigh and his family a land of promise.
- 13:39Now you usually think of the promised land as just one place
- 13:42in the Middle East, but the land of promise can be anywhere where
- 13:48it's a land which is given to people by way of covenant.
- 13:52So the land of promise is a covenant land, is what you're
- 13:55suggesting. Use that word so that we realize
- 13:58God's directing his people on earth.
- 14:00He is not an obsolete watchmaker who just developed this watch.
- 14:05You know, he's right here with us.
- 14:07And he blesses us with these promises and tells us if we will
- 14:12do the things that he commands, The land will blossom for our
- 14:16sakes, and land will blossom as a rose.
- 14:19Isaiah talks about a number of these things.
- 14:23Now some people take the idea of a land of covenant or a land of
- 14:28promise, our promised land, And especially in the Middle East,
- 14:32some have said God's promises are indelible.
- 14:37If God has promised me, then this land is mine no matter
- 14:40what. Well, Lehigh doesn't say that.
- 14:42Lehigh doesn't. Lehigh says it's only promised
- 14:45if you're going to do your part. That's right.
- 14:47I love your idea of a covenant. That's great.
- 14:50It's The promise is only intact if we obey.
- 14:54Yeah. So it's it's conditional upon
- 14:57our performance. It's not conditional upon God's
- 15:01approval or for His providing it.
- 15:05It's all taken care of. But we must live properly in
- 15:08order for it to flourish and for us to be able to accept it.
- 15:11That's beautiful. Before we go into chapter 2, I
- 15:14want to share my favorite verse in verse chapter one, verse 15.
- 15:18Behold, the Lord hath redeemed my soul from hell.
- 15:22I have beheld His glory. I am encircled about eternally
- 15:27in the arms of His love. Lehigh is on his deathbed and he
- 15:36has the love of God in him. I see temple symbolism in this
- 15:40verse. I see his view of the eternities
- 15:43as our prophet called it the celestial think celestial.
- 15:47I see this idea of being encircled in the arms of God's
- 15:51love stemming clear back to his vision of the tree of life when
- 15:55he was able to taste of God's love.
- 15:58And now, at the end of his life, even though he knows things are
- 16:00not going to go well, he feels enough love from God that he, no
- 16:06matter how bad things are on earth, he trusts God's future
- 16:10plan for his family and for the world.
- 16:18Why is Jacob given this special blessing?
- 16:21It's interesting that he calls him always his first born in the
- 16:26wilderness. So he's he's recognizing that
- 16:30Jacob has not had any of the blessings of living in a normal
- 16:34home or a normal town or community.
- 16:38He's always lived out in the wilderness.
- 16:41But he calls him his first born in the wilderness.
- 16:44I think that's because Jacob righteous, Jacob good, righteous
- 16:48Jacob, who's still just a young boy.
- 16:50He's not very old yet Lehigh realizes he is going to become a
- 16:54leader as a first born should have been.
- 16:57So I I see Jacob's almost supplanting Layman and Lemuel,
- 17:01but the blessing is powerful to Jacob.
- 17:05And I I think in a way, Jacob has been preserved from a lot of
- 17:10the temptations and problems of the world because he's only
- 17:15known life, of isolation in the wilderness.
- 17:19He has only known the struggles. The family has not always pulled
- 17:24exactly together, but they have made it and they have had
- 17:27prayers and they have had scripture study.
- 17:30He had enough conflicts in the house, I think, with all that
- 17:33animosity in the home, because his dad even says in the
- 17:36blessing, Behold, in thy childhood thou hast suffered
- 17:39afflictions, much sorrow, because of the rudeness of thy
- 17:43brethren. But then the next verse
- 17:46discusses this beautiful ability for these challenges to be
- 17:49consecrated. Yes, in in verse 2, then Lehigh
- 17:52says. Nevertheless, Jacob, my first
- 17:55born in the wilderness, thou knowest the greatness of God.
- 18:00You don't know the greatness of kings.
- 18:02You don't know the greatness of Jerusalem.
- 18:04But what you know is the greatness of God, the God that
- 18:09you have seen in nature, in the in protecting us, in guiding us.
- 18:15You've seen the way the Liahona has LED us through the fertile
- 18:19parts of the wilderness. Miracle after miracle after
- 18:23miracle. And so he has had a steady diet
- 18:28of understanding and appreciating the greatness of
- 18:31God. So he doesn't live with some of
- 18:33maybe the tormentor conflicts. Yes, he's had problems because
- 18:37of the rudeness of his older brothers, but I think that Jacob
- 18:43is able to put that aside. And because he knows that those
- 18:48afflictions have been consecrated, he can help other
- 18:52people make sacrifices and consecrate them at the temple.
- 18:57Because Jacob, as Lehigh sees, will be the right leader to be
- 19:02the High. Priest in the new temple.
- 19:04Interesting. Interesting.
- 19:06I'm going to finish chapter 2, verse two.
- 19:09He's talking about the greatness of God and then it continues on.
- 19:12He shall consecrate thine affliction for thine gain.
- 19:16Jack, I'm sure you felt that in your life.
- 19:18I I feel this so strongly every time something hard has
- 19:21happened. The silver lining is so worth
- 19:25it, the beauty of God's plan, that we can use our pain and our
- 19:30anguish to become more Christ like to become more humble, more
- 19:34meek, more sensitive to other people.
- 19:36I I love this. He can consecrate our
- 19:39afflictions. And Lehigh will say this in a
- 19:44way that makes sense, that if there were no pains, there could
- 19:49be no joy. We wouldn't know.
- 19:52Either and Lehigh knew both. And and so did Jacob.
- 19:56And you have to have both. And I think, by extension, the
- 20:02more exquisite, the more difficult the suffering and the
- 20:06pains, the greater the joy eternally can and will be.
- 20:18It's interesting to me to see from this blessing starting like
- 20:21in verse five. We read about it throughout the
- 20:25Book of Mormon. Even Mormon and Moroni at the
- 20:27end are still relating back to things that they learned from
- 20:31Lehigh's blessings. These doctrinal themes that are
- 20:34established here carry out through the whole Book of
- 20:35Mormon. Verse five says men are
- 20:38instructed sufficiently that they know good from evil and the
- 20:42law is given unto them. By the law no flesh is
- 20:45justified, but by the law men are cut off.
- 20:48These kind of ideas. Verse six is repeated elsewhere.
- 20:52Wherefore redemption cometh in and through the holy Messiah,
- 20:56and he is full of grace and truth.
- 21:00The the atonement becomes core to Jacob's ability to make these
- 21:05difficult things a blessing in your life.
- 21:07You have to go to Christ. Our hardships aren't always a
- 21:11blessing. It's only when we come unto
- 21:13Christ we become at one with God.
- 21:16And then this principle that we're talking about, where the
- 21:20affliction and the suffering will then be commensurate with
- 21:26and result in the great glory and happiness the Savior himself
- 21:33also lived that principle. No one has experienced more
- 21:38extensive exquisite pains than He did, and therefore he also
- 21:45has the greatest of all joys and powers, and is worthy of our
- 21:53love and worship. Oh, that's powerful.
- 21:57Thank you. Right here in these initial
- 21:59verses we see words like holiness, sacrifice, the
- 22:03importance of the Holy Messiah, laying down his life, and being
- 22:08the first fruits unto God so that he can then make
- 22:12intercession for all of the children.
- 22:15He has to do it first, otherwise someone who had done it first
- 22:18would be the intercessor for him.
- 22:20But he needs to be the one there who has led the way so that he
- 22:25can then make intercession for all of us.
- 22:28And 1st fruits are things that people would then normally
- 22:31consecrate in the temple. But Jesus is represented by
- 22:35those first fruits. So the first things that we gain
- 22:41under the Law of Moses, the very first fruits that were picked at
- 22:45the beginning of each harvest season.
- 22:47When you're the hungriest, when you need the food the most, you
- 22:50give those things to God. You give the best to God.
- 22:53That's right, you're eager to finally have the results of your
- 22:57labor, but you first give to the Lord.
- 23:05Not only is he referring a lot to the Atonement here, but back
- 23:09in verse four of chapter 2 is the first time in the whole
- 23:14Bible that we know of they refer to the word the fall.
- 23:19I'm fascinated with Joseph Smith translating these plates and he
- 23:23gets to this portion, and there is so much information on not
- 23:27just opposition, but on the adversary and on our Savior, on
- 23:31Satan and Jesus Christ. So I just did a little study and
- 23:35I've made a chart. In the Old Testament, the only
- 23:39time the word Satan is mentioned basically is in the book of Job.
- 23:43We don't have them in Genesis. We have it one or two references
- 23:46elsewhere, but that's about it. Devil's never mentioned.
- 23:49Serpent is never tied to the devil, and Lucifer is never tied
- 23:52to the devil because they don't have it connected.
- 23:55It's not until the Book of Mormon that we really understand
- 23:58who the Adversary is. And I think part of Jacob's
- 24:01blessing, because he had had opposition, because he had known
- 24:05both good and evil, his father is giving him this beautiful
- 24:08blessing that describes a lot not only about our Savior, but
- 24:12about the Adversary and the fall we believe in.
- 24:16The Restoration was so important, and that was not
- 24:19known in the rest of the biblical world at that time.
- 24:24I think this is all one reason why the book had to come out.
- 24:28Then he had to change the cultural dynamics of what
- 24:32Christianity meant. We did not understand the Fall
- 24:35or Satan until the Book of Mormon.
- 24:39Especially people didn't understand what was happening in
- 24:43Genesis as what we would call a fall forward.
- 24:47Yeah, you're right, you're right.
- 24:48And it's not a fall from from grace.
- 24:52It's not a fall from God's love. But it's a we have to come down
- 25:00from a premortal existence, and that coming down can be
- 25:05described as a descending. And I think that's where the
- 25:08word fall comes into play. It's sort of a free fall when
- 25:13the spirit comes down. Yeah, well, they're also falling
- 25:16from God's great God's, the Garden of Eden.
- 25:19Yeah. So where do you think Lehigh
- 25:24gets this idea? Well, it's got to come from the
- 25:27brass plates because starting in verses 17 and 18, he starts
- 25:30talking about Adam and Eve. And this is also interesting
- 25:34because, you know, the Book of Mormon does not have a creation
- 25:36account. And yet we get more information
- 25:39on Adam and Eve in the Book of Mormon than we do in any of the
- 25:45biblical accounts three times more than the Old Testament.
- 25:48But across the whole book, the Book of Mormon is filled with
- 25:52this information. When Nephi made that special
- 25:56trip back to Jerusalem to get the brass plates, Lehigh knew
- 26:00that they needed to have those plates, and we're finding out
- 26:04now why. The brass plates had different
- 26:09information. They did.
- 26:10I think that Lehigh, I don't know how much more was found in
- 26:17the opening chapters of Genesis on the brass plates than what we
- 26:22have in the Bible or in the Book of Moses.
- 26:25But I think what was on the brass plates must have been much
- 26:28closer to what we find in the Book of Moses.
- 26:30But what's wonderful is the way you have Lehigh explaining
- 26:35what's there before we even know what's there.
- 26:38The Joseph Smith translation hasn't even begun.
- 26:40No, not for another year and a half.
- 26:42But the when we refer to the book of Moses, that is the
- 26:45Joseph Smith translation of those first few chapters of
- 26:48Genesis. That's correct.
- 26:49And three chapters are added in that we're not there.
- 26:52And the reason why I think this is significant taken is because
- 26:54as the Jews and the Israelites are being taken captive both up
- 26:58to Assyria and over to Babylon, they are reworking the
- 27:02Scriptures. And we have lots of examples by
- 27:04biblical scholars of how those texts were changed and what was
- 27:08improved and what was rewritten and the difference between first
- 27:11Kings and first Chronicles and a lot of effort on that.
- 27:14And yet, we don't have evidence of the original source until
- 27:18here. And Lehigh is giving us this
- 27:20information that is consistent with the Joseph Smith
- 27:23translation, even though the Joseph's translation hasn't come
- 27:26to pass. That is fabulous.
- 27:28That is great. It's profound.
- 27:36Lehigh understands the necessity for the dichotomy, the
- 27:42opposition. There must be an opposition in
- 27:45everything, and if not you really don't have certainly
- 27:50don't have a choice. But you probably also don't have
- 27:54discernment. We live in a world where we are
- 27:58confronted all the time with opposition.
- 28:01There's light and dark, hot and cold, wet and dry, but lots of
- 28:06other types of opposition as well.
- 28:09Jed, you think opposition is an eternal principle?
- 28:13I don't know that it's an eternal principle, but it's
- 28:15certainly a temporal, mortally condition.
- 28:20We have time and eternity. I think in eternity there maybe
- 28:26isn't time, but we are now temporal beings we know in this
- 28:31world. As Lehigh says, if there weren't
- 28:35an opposition, then there would be no purpose in the creation.
- 28:42Things would become a compound, he says, in one there would be
- 28:46no differentiation between righteousness, wickedness,
- 28:51holiness or misery, good or bad. And he says because of this, if
- 28:58it weren't for this opposition, everything would be as dead,
- 29:03having no life, ignore death. So verse 11 goes back to verse
- 29:078, where he's just introduced for the first time in the Book
- 29:10of Mormon, the idea of the resurrection.
- 29:13So the death follows this hope of the resurrection.
- 29:18This is, I think, our best chapter on the atonement and
- 29:22resurrection in the small plates.
- 29:25It's just a fabulous discussion that Lehi is giving him on this
- 29:30plan of salvation. Resurrection is not a word we
- 29:32find in the Old Testament, and yet it was part of the Higher
- 29:35Law, and so Lehigh is teaching it to his sons and his daughters
- 29:39and his family. Well, and they need to know that
- 29:42because they're living in a world of death, and there must
- 29:45be an opposition. If there's death, there must be
- 29:47life, and resurrection is a part of that.
- 29:51Another interesting point here uses a phrase that will also
- 29:54show up much later in the Book of Mormon, and that's this
- 29:57phrase to have a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
- 30:02And contrite meaning crushed. Where does this verse show up
- 30:05later I. Don't know.
- 30:07Well, the words of Jesus speaking in 3rd Nephi out of the
- 30:12darkness. He's quoting Psalms.
- 30:16They talk about having a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
- 30:18So Lehigh knows that phrase from the Psalms, I would think, and
- 30:25he uses that to explain that Jesus, the Holy Messiah, will
- 30:31offer himself as a sacrifice for sin to answer the ends of the
- 30:37law to all those who have a broken heart and a contrite
- 30:40spirit. You know, Jack, that's
- 30:42interesting because the broken heart, remember a heart in the
- 30:45ancient world was the mind in the Psalms it says as my heart
- 30:49thinketh. And so by saying broken heart,
- 30:51they're saying you have to change the way you're thinking
- 30:54too. It's not just your emotions.
- 30:55You got to change the way you're thinking.
- 30:58You accept Christ in your life, Messiah at that time.
- 31:01And I think also what he's saying here is that when you
- 31:05have a a broken heart, it's like having a heart attack, right?
- 31:09You're dying and in order to really live, you have to put off
- 31:15all. You have to die, put off the old
- 31:19man, the old person. And if you do this, then the
- 31:25ends of the law can be answered, and you can then have the the
- 31:32blessings of eternal life given to you.
- 31:37But there must be this difference between mortality and
- 31:41eternity, because there must be an opposition in all things.
- 31:53I want to move ahead to verse 21.
- 31:55We're still in chapter 2, but this probationary state, this
- 31:58time for men to prepare to meet God, is so beautifully described
- 32:02and the days are prolonged for the children of men.
- 32:05But they have the opportunity to repent.
- 32:08They might repent, you know, they they have this given to
- 32:12them. And then it goes down in verse
- 32:1422. If Adam had not transgressed, he
- 32:17would not have fallen. And all this builds up to verse
- 32:2225 and 26. Adam fell that men might be and
- 32:27men are, that they might have joy.
- 32:31And then he goes on to explain how that joy comes, and the
- 32:33Messiah cometh in the fullness of time, and he may redeem the
- 32:38children of men from the fall. So there we have two references
- 32:43to the Fall in one chapter. We have joy as an option for all
- 32:47humanity. And we have joy because the
- 32:52Messiah is going to come. He's going to suffer from our
- 32:55sins. No matter how bad life gets.
- 32:57We have a Redeemer. And then keep going into verse
- 33:0127. You're free to choose.
- 33:03You know we've got agency here, and I love the way he describes
- 33:07these two ways. Here you can either choose
- 33:09captivity or you can choose life.
- 33:12And in 28 He The way you choose life is to look to the great
- 33:17mediator that is such a beautiful image of our Savior as
- 33:21the one who's allows us to enter through him back to the presence
- 33:26of God. Another way of saying this is
- 33:30that if Adam and Eve hadn't fallen, they would really have
- 33:34lived in a condition where choice was meaningless, where
- 33:37they really didn't have any particular choice because they
- 33:41would have remained in the state in which they were created.
- 33:45They would have existed, but would have been static, and
- 33:47there would have been no progress or regress.
- 33:50There would have been no advancement, no regression.
- 33:56Until they ate of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil.
- 33:59They had to be removed from the presence and influence of God in
- 34:02order to act for themselves and not always be somehow influenced
- 34:09by other factors around them. And so the Fall, as Lehigh says,
- 34:16makes us free in one sense. It makes us free to choose
- 34:23either liberty and eternal life or to choose captivity and
- 34:28death. We sometimes think of free
- 34:29agency as the power and the ability to do anything we want.
- 34:34I'm free. Sadly, that is not the case,
- 34:38yes. That's right.
- 34:39There are consequences. And we don't get to choose the
- 34:42consequences. We can choose our action, but
- 34:46with those actions will come consequences.
- 34:49Our freedom is then that we can choose between consequences that
- 34:55we either know for sure or are likely to be able to figure out
- 35:00or through. Inspiration can be guided so
- 35:03that we don't make faults or bad choices, but we become free only
- 35:10in the sense that we can choose one of two ways, as Lehigh goes
- 35:16on to say. And that is that you can either
- 35:20choose liberty and eternal life through the great mediator of
- 35:24all men, or captivity and death according to the captivity and
- 35:28power of the devil. And here's another reference to
- 35:31the devil in this dichotomy between Christ and Lucifer.
- 35:35He's the great counterfeit. He's in opposition.
- 35:38And when you really think about it, any real meaningful choices
- 35:42that we make are either bringing you closer to goodness and to
- 35:47God, or are taking you away from that.
- 35:50And this theme saturates the rest of the Book of Mormon.
- 35:54It does. Lehigh's farewell message is so
- 35:57crucial to everything in the text.
- 35:59And we'll see this showing up in Alma speeches in Samuel the
- 36:04Lamanites, and of course, all the way to the end in Mormon and
- 36:08Moronize writings as well. We almost can see here in the
- 36:11text this idea that we are going to have to learn from our own
- 36:16experiences to know what's right and wrong.
- 36:19This probationary state is for that learning.
- 36:21We're here to progress. We're here to learn.
- 36:25And if that means we have to fall off our bike sometimes and
- 36:27fall off a few more things, it's OK, because God will consecrate
- 36:32all this for our game. All these things will give the
- 36:35experience and be for thy good. And you know, this reminds me
- 36:37also of where Lehigh would have had a vision that crystallizes
- 36:42all of this, and it's back in his vision of the Tree of Life.
- 36:46And there's the one path that leads to that.
- 36:49But there are other ways that lead to darkness and falling
- 36:53into the mists of of error and filthy waters, and so.
- 36:59On that vision is part of rest of this book, as well as Jacob.
- 37:03I feel like that vision is used a lot in the rest of the Book of
- 37:07Mormon, and even right here in second ephi chapter 2.
- 37:11And I think the principle that we can take away from all of
- 37:14this Lehigh introduced back in verse 11, and then fills this
- 37:19out with the the doctrine and the revelation of the plan of
- 37:24salvation, illustrating the principle that there must be an
- 37:29opposition in all things. And he uses it the Fulcrum, the
- 37:35Atonement of Jesus Christ. That becomes the pivot point.
- 37:40Accepting that or rejecting that is ultimately the the the most
- 37:47foundational part of the existence that we are living in.
- 37:51And Lehigh says if we don't have this opposition, we don't
- 37:57recognize Christ as the the main point of the opposition that we
- 38:02must face, then it would be as if we were dead, having no life,
- 38:08neither death nor life, he says. Corruption nor incorruption,
- 38:13neither happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
- 38:19So all of these things that we just kind of naturally take for
- 38:22granted as a part of the human condition.
- 38:25All this opposition, really at the foundation, down at the
- 38:30metaphysical bottom of all of what we are, turns on this
- 38:36dichotomy between Jesus Christ choosing him or following Satan.
- 38:45And the whole reason why men are so that we can find joy, but we
- 38:49cannot find joy without knowing the bitter.
- 38:53And sometimes I feel like that the plan of happiness is
- 38:57misunderstood. To think like if I'm not happy,
- 38:59I must be doing something wrong or if something's going wrong
- 39:03then I'm then God doesn't love me.
- 39:05No, no, no, no, no. The joy comes from understanding
- 39:09both. And we are here to not only find
- 39:14our Savior, who is the source of joy, but to follow Him.
- 39:19And that message is so clear here in 1st and 2nd chapters of
- 39:23second ephi. I hope your scripture study this
- 39:26week is enhanced because of these great messages.
- 39:30They testify of Christ and we add our testimonies that Jesus
- 39:34is our Redeemer. And I would echo that too, Lynn,
- 39:41saying, as Lehigh did I would, that ye should look to the great
- 39:47mediator and hearken unto His great commandments, and be
- 39:51faithful unto His words, and choose eternal life according to
- 39:57the will of His Holy Spirit. I testify that that is a
- 40:01wonderful formula for fulfilling the purposes and the reasons why
- 40:06we're here on this earth. And God will bless us.
- 40:09I know He will. Amen, Amen.
