- 0:31what is going on everybody
- 0:34welcome to lunch with the
- 0:36Clydesdale wow what a
- 0:39twenty four hours it's been
- 0:40since I saw you guys
- 0:42yesterday but we were back
- 0:43and better than ever I'm
- 0:45really trying hard to keep
- 0:46these a consistent everyday
- 0:48show now as projects have
- 0:51moved on and in a better
- 0:55groove with work so
- 1:01Wow.
- 1:02So within the last twenty four hours.
- 1:06First of all, Corey, seeing the chat,
- 1:08thanks for being here.
- 1:09Thank you, everybody, for being here.
- 1:11You guys are awesome as always.
- 1:16So, like,
- 1:17I'm sure everywhere around the country,
- 1:20it's this way, but like.
- 1:23Illness and the flu and
- 1:24norovirus and whatever else
- 1:27is going around has been
- 1:29like taking people out.
- 1:32so my mom got influenza a
- 1:35about a week ago so I've
- 1:39been calling her every day
- 1:40because she lives alone uh
- 1:42just checking on her and
- 1:44she's been hacking and
- 1:45coughing and sleeping and
- 1:48um just a bunch of crazy
- 1:50stuff and so yesterday gosh
- 1:53about fourth four o'clock I
- 1:56called her to see how she was doing
- 1:59um and she just said she
- 2:01felt really weak and this
- 2:02is a week into the thing
- 2:04and I I said well what's
- 2:06the plan because you're a
- 2:07week into this and
- 2:09nothing's getting better
- 2:12and she said she called the
- 2:13doctor and the doctor said
- 2:15that hey go to the hospital
- 2:19the best I can we can do at
- 2:21this point is get a chest
- 2:22x-ray and make sure that
- 2:23this hasn't turned into
- 2:24pneumonia and my mom's like
- 2:27I don't even know if I can
- 2:28get to my car and drive to
- 2:30the hospital I said well
- 2:34let's stay in touch
- 2:36About an hour later,
- 2:38I get a call from one of
- 2:39her friends and another one
- 2:43of her friends is an RN.
- 2:45And she checked on my mom and said,
- 2:50enough's enough, called the ambulance.
- 2:52My mom was then rushed to
- 2:55the hospital where she was
- 2:58taken to the ER and just x-rays given.
- 3:03And it turns out she has pneumonia.
- 3:08So they started IV
- 3:09antibiotics to clear that up.
- 3:13With that happening,
- 3:15I get a call from my sister.
- 3:18And my sister tells me that
- 3:20my mom's sister has passed away.
- 3:25So my mom does not know this.
- 3:28We're getting word that she
- 3:29has passed away.
- 3:31She is my mom's older sister
- 3:34and the only sister she has left.
- 3:37My mom is the one of four.
- 3:39Her other two sisters have passed away.
- 3:41This one passed away yesterday.
- 3:45and so I'm the oldest I'm
- 3:50the big brother to my
- 3:51sister so I made the call
- 3:53to my mom while she's in
- 3:56the er while she's hooked
- 3:58up to ivs to let her know
- 4:00that her sister had passed
- 4:01away we both cried a little
- 4:06bit um just then her pastor
- 4:09had actually walked in to
- 4:10see her and so that was
- 4:14That was really good that he
- 4:16was there and they got to
- 4:18chat and pray and do all
- 4:20those things to kind of help her out.
- 4:24There was a lot of back and
- 4:25forth throughout the
- 4:26evening with my nephew who
- 4:30was raised by my mom,
- 4:31lives here in Columbus.
- 4:33We are trying to figure out
- 4:35like a tag team approach to
- 4:37go home to be with her so that he can,
- 4:41so we can make it a longer
- 4:43stretch than just a couple days.
- 4:46So he left this morning.
- 4:48He's probably just getting there now.
- 4:51He's going to be with her for now.
- 4:53And then I'm heading out on
- 4:55Friday to go be with her for the weekend.
- 4:59So there's that.
- 5:02So then I finally am like, listen,
- 5:03I need some rest.
- 5:05I need to get to bed.
- 5:07I wake up this morning to
- 5:08find out that someone has
- 5:11hacked my debit card account somehow,
- 5:14and five massive purchases
- 5:17were made on my debit card overnight.
- 5:23And...
- 5:25And I'm missing several
- 5:26hundred dollars from my account.
- 5:29And I get an alert from my bank.
- 5:31I talked to them.
- 5:32They actually stopped some
- 5:34of those charges.
- 5:36I had to dispute a couple others.
- 5:39So now I'm in that process
- 5:40and I don't have a working
- 5:42bank card to try to get home to my mom.
- 5:47They are mailing me one ASAP.
- 5:51I do have my wife's.
- 5:53So, you know, we'll figure all that out.
- 5:57But my goodness,
- 5:58what a freaking twenty four hours.
- 6:00It has been utterly crazy.
- 6:04And I'm just trying to kind
- 6:06of settle in with you guys today.
- 6:09and get a little bit of
- 6:10normalcy and then figure
- 6:13out my trips for the week to get to her,
- 6:16hang out with her for the weekend.
- 6:21yeah yeah just try to take a
- 6:23breath just try to take a
- 6:25breath thank you both corey
- 6:26and lex for the thoughts
- 6:28the prayers um I appreciate
- 6:31every single one of them um
- 6:34but I did talk to her this
- 6:35morning she is feeling better and her
- 6:40her cough is not as deep.
- 6:43Um, so,
- 6:44and she's able to breathe better at
- 6:46this point.
- 6:47Um,
- 6:48so it looks like she is stabilized out.
- 6:51It also affected her blood sugar horribly.
- 6:54Um,
- 6:54they've got that back under control
- 6:56this morning.
- 6:58Um,
- 7:00And I think I've shared this
- 7:02on the show before.
- 7:03She went into AFib too.
- 7:05She is still in AFib,
- 7:07which complicated some of
- 7:08the aspects of this a little bit.
- 7:11But it looks like they have
- 7:13everything kind of stabilized right now.
- 7:15So, yeah.
- 7:19crazy crazy crazy crazy and
- 7:22my sister is sick as well
- 7:24and so my sister does not
- 7:25want to take any of her
- 7:26illness into the hospital
- 7:28with her to my mom so we
- 7:30have that aspect as well
- 7:33and there is some
- 7:34suspicious things going on
- 7:36with her that she has an
- 7:37appointment on monday and
- 7:39can't miss that appointment
- 7:41because of what's going on
- 7:42with her yeah just
- 7:49Um, so yeah, that's,
- 7:52what's going on in my neck of the woods.
- 7:56Uh, but yeah,
- 7:57I hope everyone else is
- 7:58having a great day.
- 8:00Um, it's another snowy cold day here in,
- 8:04in Columbus, but, um, but you know, uh,
- 8:11we're, we're getting through that too.
- 8:14so I want to to let you guys
- 8:16know don't forget we had
- 8:18great great getting a lot
- 8:19of feedback on instagram um
- 8:22a couple comments on
- 8:23youtube about the sunday
- 8:25night crossfit show from
- 8:26last week a lot of people
- 8:27really enjoyed the
- 8:29different perspectives and
- 8:31the respectful conversation
- 8:32we had about the crossfit
- 8:34open and other things
- 8:35happening in the crossfit
- 8:36space so make sure you go check that out
- 8:40It is one of our better,
- 8:42one of our most watched
- 8:43episodes as of late,
- 8:46and it's definitely worth the watch.
- 8:48So make sure you go check that out.
- 8:53In addition to that,
- 8:55tomorrow afternoon at three p.m.
- 8:57Eastern time, noon Pacific,
- 8:59we'll have Justin Kotler on
- 9:01the show to talk about
- 9:03underdogs athletics and where they're at,
- 9:06what happened with the
- 9:08Ricky Garrard situation,
- 9:13what the future looks like for underdogs.
- 9:16They did sign a new athlete.
- 9:17If you have not seen that,
- 9:19we'll talk about that as well.
- 9:22And so excited to catch up
- 9:23with my friend Justin
- 9:25tomorrow and talk about all
- 9:26things CrossFit, World Fitness Project,
- 9:29what it's like to be a
- 9:30coach with all the
- 9:32opportunities out there,
- 9:34things like that.
- 9:35So make sure you check in
- 9:36and see that show tomorrow, three p.m.
- 9:39Eastern, noon Pacific.
- 9:43And then now we'll get into
- 9:46the headline for this show,
- 9:47and that is...
- 9:49Ben Bergeron talked about
- 9:52why he was out of the CrossFit,
- 9:56not out of the CrossFit Open.
- 9:58Sorry.
- 9:59Brain fog.
- 10:00Brain fog.
- 10:01Why he de-affiliated
- 10:03CrossFit New England and is
- 10:06no longer affiliated.
- 10:10what's crazy to me is when I
- 10:12first got into CrossFit and
- 10:14for those of you who don't know,
- 10:15I started in, like,
- 10:18so pretty early on in the
- 10:20process of CrossFit.
- 10:22One of the podcasts I
- 10:23listened to all the time
- 10:25was chasing excellence.
- 10:29Listen to that podcast constantly.
- 10:32When I first got into
- 10:33CrossFit at some point, um,
- 10:42I kind of learned what Corey
- 10:43is talking about,
- 10:45that he has a Rolodex of
- 10:46inspirational sayings.
- 10:48He got from other people and
- 10:49then he passes them off as his own.
- 10:53And what I kind of learned too,
- 10:55is that like,
- 10:55there wasn't a lot of
- 10:56substance behind the words.
- 10:59He was great at saying the things.
- 11:02Um,
- 11:04but at some point I felt like they just
- 11:06didn't ring true.
- 11:09so just as I said on the
- 11:11sunday night crossfit show
- 11:13I want to be a place where
- 11:15people can freely talk
- 11:17about why they feel some
- 11:20way or why they don't feel
- 11:21some way and that we can we
- 11:26can have a discussion about
- 11:28that in an adult manner in
- 11:30a respectful manner
- 11:32Um, and maybe not change each other's mind,
- 11:36but at least respect where
- 11:37that is coming from.
- 11:39Um,
- 11:40and still be friends at the end of the
- 11:42day.
- 11:43And that's kind of the
- 11:44beautiful thing with Carolyn, Jamie and I,
- 11:47we don't always, we very,
- 11:51we rarely agree completely on any subject,
- 11:55um,
- 11:56But we can have the conversation,
- 11:59and at the end of the show,
- 12:00we're still friends,
- 12:02which is what I love about that show.
- 12:07And I love the fact that we
- 12:08can keep it respectful
- 12:11during those conversations.
- 12:13But I heard that Ben
- 12:15Bergeron has been talking
- 12:16about why he de-affiliated.
- 12:18He did that like a couple months ago,
- 12:20it was my understanding.
- 12:22But he brought out an
- 12:23episode on his podcast,
- 12:24Chasing Excellence.
- 12:25where they brought a guest
- 12:26on to talk about why they deaffiliated.
- 12:30And I was watching it last
- 12:32night when I actually was
- 12:33having trouble sleeping.
- 12:36And it just really, really annoyed me.
- 12:41And I hope that regardless
- 12:43of your feelings of what
- 12:45happened at last year's games,
- 12:48we can have a discussion about this.
- 12:51And he actually points to
- 12:54the death of Lazar Jukic as
- 12:56the reason that he is
- 12:57de-affiliating and the
- 13:00CrossFit reaction to that.
- 13:04And so I'm actually going to
- 13:08play a snippet.
- 13:09And trust me, I get it.
- 13:13I was there that weekend.
- 13:14It sucked.
- 13:16It sucked bad.
- 13:17And he talks about how it was bad there.
- 13:21Um,
- 13:22and they talk about how they love the
- 13:24community and the community
- 13:25was like at a loss for what to do.
- 13:28They wanted to be together.
- 13:30They felt like they were
- 13:31drawn together in that moment,
- 13:33but they did not know what
- 13:34to do in that moment.
- 13:37And they go on to talk about
- 13:38the leadership of CrossFit,
- 13:41but Ben has actually asked
- 13:44what would he have done differently?
- 13:47If he were in that situation
- 13:49and I have it queued up from his podcast.
- 13:53And so I'm going to share it now.
- 13:58And again,
- 13:59this is from the chasing
- 14:00excellence podcast.
- 14:02I'm going to blow it up so
- 14:03you guys can kind of see full screen.
- 14:06And here he's asked the
- 14:09question and this is his answer.
- 14:13So I want to take those two things.
- 14:14I do want to explore with the both of you.
- 14:17what could have been done
- 14:18differently that would have
- 14:19led to a different outcome,
- 14:22at least as best as the two
- 14:24of you can figure for your
- 14:26particular environments and contexts.
- 14:29So Ben, I'll start with you.
- 14:31If you could bring us back a
- 14:33year or maybe just even to
- 14:35the games and you were in
- 14:37the leadership position at CrossFit HQ,
- 14:41what would you have done
- 14:42differently can you can you
- 14:43walk us through at least
- 14:44some of the places that you
- 14:46would have went left when
- 14:47they run white right where
- 14:48you would have pressed the
- 14:49gas when they press the
- 14:50brake well I don't know
- 14:52what I would have done
- 14:53because no one knows what
- 14:54they would do until they're
- 14:55put in that really
- 14:56challenging situation so what I would do
- 15:04is the right thing I mean it
- 15:06just sounds so cliche but
- 15:10really that's not what
- 15:11happened and I don't mean
- 15:12here's okay he starts by
- 15:17saying I don't know what I
- 15:19would do because nobody
- 15:20knows what they would do
- 15:21unless they're in that
- 15:22situation and then after a
- 15:26pause says I would do the right thing
- 15:33What does that even mean?
- 15:35Here we are talking six
- 15:39months after the event.
- 15:40You have had six months to
- 15:42reflect on what happened at
- 15:45the CrossFit Games.
- 15:48I'm going to admit to you,
- 15:49I have no idea how I would
- 15:51handle that situation.
- 15:52It is an inconceivable
- 15:54situation for me to be able
- 15:57to put myself there,
- 16:00understand everything going on around me,
- 16:04and to armchair quarterback
- 16:05what happened in those moments.
- 16:10He starts off right by
- 16:11saying that exact damn thing.
- 16:15And then to say, but I do know this,
- 16:17I would have done the right thing.
- 16:19How can you say you don't
- 16:21know what you would have done,
- 16:22but it would have been the right thing?
- 16:29Are you kidding me?
- 16:32We've had six months to think about this.
- 16:36Six months for you to
- 16:38contemplate everything that
- 16:40happened in that moment.
- 16:43And when asked what you
- 16:44would have done differently,
- 16:46you can't tell me.
- 16:49You say you don't know,
- 16:51but it would have been the right thing.
- 16:54How in the hell can you say that?
- 16:59Corey says, that makes no sense, Ben.
- 17:02Andrew, vague and ambiguous,
- 17:04so no one can pin anything on him.
- 17:08James W.,
- 17:08this is a situation where there's
- 17:10no right way to respond,
- 17:12but there sure as hell is a
- 17:13wrong way to respond.
- 17:14CrossFit HQ fumbled the
- 17:15reaction in response to the
- 17:17tragedy horribly.
- 17:21I don't know what the right thing to do is,
- 17:22but I do the right thing.
- 17:24That is exactly what he said.
- 17:30There are factors at play
- 17:32here that we don't know about.
- 17:38CrossFit is not owned by Dawnfall.
- 17:41CrossFit is not owned by Dave Castro.
- 17:45There is a board of directors.
- 17:48There is a whatever they're called,
- 17:53the company that bought CrossFit,
- 17:56Berkshire, that
- 17:59have more say as to how that
- 18:01reaction was than any of the other people,
- 18:04any other players in that situation.
- 18:11Were there things done incorrectly?
- 18:13I will tell you unequivocally there were.
- 18:18It could have been handled better.
- 18:19The tribute could have been
- 18:20handled better.
- 18:22Meeting with the athletes
- 18:23could have been handled better.
- 18:26And there has been
- 18:27admissions from CrossFit HQ
- 18:30that they did not do that right.
- 18:36But to tell you that with a
- 18:40board of directors over top
- 18:41of me telling me what I can and cannot do,
- 18:45I don't know what would
- 18:45have happened through that situation.
- 18:51James W. The idea that
- 18:53CrossFit HQ should have
- 18:54turned over the independent
- 18:55investigation report is just naive.
- 18:57They're almost certainly
- 18:58legally precluded from
- 19:00disclosing it for many reasons.
- 19:03I agree with you.
- 19:04One hundred percent, James.
- 19:07uh kpj barry he goes on to
- 19:09say that he really waited
- 19:11for hq to respond I'll fall
- 19:13and admit wrongdoing or
- 19:14inadequate safety and say
- 19:16we messed up and they never
- 19:17did he does do that I will
- 19:19tell you he does go on and
- 19:21say that but I will go back
- 19:23to what james just said
- 19:25that I am sure there are
- 19:26legal things that that
- 19:28preclude them from
- 19:29admitting that they did anything wrong
- 19:34in the, in that action of the death,
- 19:39if they admit they are wrong,
- 19:40they're opening themselves
- 19:41up for massive lawsuits.
- 19:44And I am sure that that is
- 19:46what the board of directors
- 19:47are focused on and,
- 19:50and Berkshire and all of that.
- 19:52Um,
- 19:56and it's funny because we
- 19:57have the Daniel Chaffee interview today,
- 19:59and I'm going to talk about
- 20:00that in a minute,
- 20:01but a lot of what he says, um,
- 20:07kind of plays a part in,
- 20:08in what happened here.
- 20:11Um, and, and he does,
- 20:14he does say that they
- 20:15should have stepped up.
- 20:16They should have admitted
- 20:17what they did wrong.
- 20:19Um,
- 20:23And they have admitted some wrongdoing,
- 20:25that they did handle things in some ways.
- 20:31But to admit wrongdoing is
- 20:33admitting guilt when there
- 20:34are probably pending lawsuits.
- 20:39And even if there aren't pending lawsuits,
- 20:41by admitting guilt,
- 20:43you're opening up yourself
- 20:44for even more lawsuits.
- 20:46And with that,
- 20:47it probably means CrossFit
- 20:49doesn't exist anymore.
- 20:51And if you're Berkshire and
- 20:52the board of directors,
- 20:53that is the last thing you want.
- 20:55And therefore why they
- 20:57probably gave directives to
- 20:59the leadership at that time
- 21:01that they could only go
- 21:02this far in what they were saying.
- 21:11So.
- 21:15Anyway,
- 21:16the way he answered that question
- 21:17just really upset me a lot
- 21:21while I couldn't sleep and
- 21:22then I couldn't sleep some more.
- 21:25But it just felt like a play
- 21:33for trying to be relevant again.
- 21:38as we're six months post games,
- 21:42we are into a new hit.
- 21:44And he even said like,
- 21:46it has nothing to do with
- 21:47the affiliate fee raises.
- 21:49It has nothing to do with
- 21:52all the decisions that
- 21:54CrossFit made before.
- 21:56Now the guest on here with
- 21:58him goes in a different
- 21:59direction entirely.
- 22:01He said,
- 22:02this is something that's been
- 22:03brewing for him since twenty twenty.
- 22:06And he finally made the
- 22:07decision and the nail in
- 22:08the coffin was the death at the games.
- 22:12I actually understood his
- 22:14plight way more than I understood Ben's.
- 22:17Um, because he thinks that there is a,
- 22:23a trend in not doing what's
- 22:26best for the affiliates and
- 22:28not doing what's best for, um,
- 22:34the members in the CrossFit space.
- 22:46So Corey says,
- 22:46to even expect there's some
- 22:48sort of protocol for a
- 22:49tragedy of this magnitude is absurd.
- 22:52No one expected anyone to die,
- 22:53not a single person.
- 22:55While I agree with you there,
- 22:57what he keeps saying in the
- 22:59podcast is that your...
- 23:04Your moral compass or your
- 23:07integrity should have come to the front.
- 23:10Um, yeah,
- 23:13a lot of those catchphrases that
- 23:15he's been spouting for
- 23:18years and just to be transparent,
- 23:31my old gym used to do comp train.
- 23:35Programming, I was never a fan of it.
- 23:40It made me probably have a
- 23:41distaste for Ben Bergeron.
- 23:47And so I've never been a big
- 23:49fan to begin with,
- 23:50other than when I first got
- 23:51into CrossFit and listened
- 23:52to his Chasing Excellence
- 23:58podcast back then.
- 23:59But then I wondered what the heck.
- 24:09CrossFit says,
- 24:09feels like when Mark
- 24:10Wahlberg said he would have stopped nine,
- 24:12eleven when, if he was on that plane.
- 24:18Yeah.
- 24:25Corey's gym still follows comp train.
- 24:28Wondering how much longer after this.
- 24:31I think there's going to be
- 24:32a group that go ahead and
- 24:33continue to follow,
- 24:34but I don't know what that means.
- 24:36What I find it really kind of
- 24:40super ironic is now with the
- 24:42rumored sale of CrossFit, why now?
- 24:46Why now to make all these
- 24:47statements when in a few
- 24:50months we could have a
- 24:51completely different leadership in place?
- 24:57Not only is it weird and
- 25:00doesn't really say much,
- 25:02the timing of it is just bizarre.
- 25:04So...
- 25:09Yeah, and then I'm going to,
- 25:11one other thing about the podcast.
- 25:14You'll notice that just like
- 25:17myself and many other podcasts out there,
- 25:20we go live.
- 25:22What you see is what you get.
- 25:25What I find really hard to
- 25:26watch with Chasing
- 25:27Excellence is they use an
- 25:30AI editor that takes out
- 25:34any large gaps between
- 25:36words and that choppiness.
- 25:39makes me feel like I'm
- 25:40watching a mix max headroom
- 25:42commercial from the eighties.
- 25:46lowers my trust in what's
- 25:48being said if you have to
- 25:50use that much editing to
- 25:52try to make yourself look
- 25:53the best you can possibly
- 25:54look I am so much more into
- 25:59a podcast that just lets it
- 26:01flow and it is what it is
- 26:03you are what you are um
- 26:06it's much more believable but man
- 26:10There's a couple people out
- 26:11there that use that AI editing,
- 26:13and it is.
- 26:15It makes it really hard for
- 26:16me to watch and believe
- 26:18anything that's being said.
- 26:20Because you can't tell
- 26:21what's been AI edited and
- 26:23what's been edited.
- 26:28So.
- 26:31The other thing that's weird to me is,
- 26:33you know,
- 26:34Ben was taking a step back from
- 26:36the competitive CrossFit world, right?
- 26:38He was going to dive into his affiliate.
- 26:40It was all about the affiliate.
- 26:42But the reason that he's
- 26:43de-affiliating is because
- 26:44of the sport which he had
- 26:46taken a step back from.
- 26:55Corey says, agreed CrossFit.
- 26:56Harry Pauly was and is legit.
- 26:59The individual track fell
- 27:00off directly after he left.
- 27:02Now Cole is in charge and a
- 27:04lot of buzzwords.
- 27:12So if you're taking a step
- 27:14back from the sport of
- 27:16CrossFit to focus on your
- 27:18affiliate and focus on the community,
- 27:21Why would an action from the
- 27:22games be what pulls you away from that?
- 27:29They've been an affiliate
- 27:30for eighteen years and now
- 27:32now is when you're going to
- 27:33take a step back.
- 27:48Um, clock asks,
- 27:49what did you not like about
- 27:50CT programming?
- 27:54I've said this a million times and, um,
- 27:59what I didn't like about it
- 28:01was it was programmed for
- 28:03people who wanted to be
- 28:05competitive and CrossFit.
- 28:08It looked at,
- 28:09and if you go back and listen
- 28:11to chasing excellence back in the day,
- 28:14It looked at the programming
- 28:16from the open to semifinals to regionals,
- 28:19whatever they were at the time,
- 28:21to the games,
- 28:23and it programmed for that
- 28:25to make you the best
- 28:26competitive athlete possible.
- 28:28It is comp train for competitors.
- 28:33I am and never will be an
- 28:35elite athlete in the CrossFit space.
- 28:39What I loved about CrossFit
- 28:40was the unknown and the unknowable,
- 28:43going into the gym and
- 28:45being surprised about the
- 28:46workout and doing it because it was fun.
- 28:52Not dumbbells every third
- 28:56day because dumbbells have
- 28:58been programmed a lot at
- 28:59regionals this year.
- 29:01I wanted to lift barbells, not dumbbells.
- 29:04I wanted to do the fun stuff, right?
- 29:10I am currently fifty-five years old.
- 29:13I want to be healthy and
- 29:16live a longer life,
- 29:17and I want to have fun while doing it.
- 29:21And that's what CrossFit
- 29:22gave me when I first got into it.
- 29:24When we started doing comp training,
- 29:26comp train training, it became just meh.
- 29:33Like the same shit all the time.
- 29:36And like trying to be a
- 29:39competitive athlete.
- 29:41I went to local comps and just did my best,
- 29:45had fun.
- 29:47But I was never going to be
- 29:48an elite athlete, and I don't need that.
- 29:51I need to just be healthy
- 29:52and be the best Scott I can
- 29:55be going forward.
- 29:57That's why I didn't like it.
- 29:59And I could probably,
- 30:01if I dove into Mayhem
- 30:02programming or if I dove
- 30:03into any of these other
- 30:06template programmings that
- 30:08you get from the big guys,
- 30:12I probably would have the same complaint.
- 30:18when I first got into
- 30:19crossfit literally the
- 30:21owner of our gym would come
- 30:22in and write the workout on
- 30:24the board as we were
- 30:24standing there so nobody
- 30:26even knew what it was it's
- 30:29whatever equipment whatever
- 30:31timing we had at the time
- 30:32and he would make it out as
- 30:34we stood there when I was
- 30:36at when I first went to um
- 30:39polaris christy and patrick
- 30:42did a lot of interval
- 30:43training which was just fun
- 30:46I liked the interval training.
- 30:47I liked a lot of rowing.
- 30:50They had a lot of bench press.
- 30:51They had a lot of the things
- 30:53that I like to do.
- 30:58So, yeah, that's what I'll say.
- 31:04And I think that some of the
- 31:06affiliates have lost their
- 31:07way in that aspect.
- 31:09A lot of people just are
- 31:10coming in to be the healthiest.
- 31:13Fifty five year old or the healthiest,
- 31:15thirty five year old or the
- 31:17healthiest twenty five year
- 31:18old that they can be,
- 31:20and they're not there to be
- 31:21a competitive athlete.
- 31:24And I think some of the
- 31:25template programmings don't
- 31:27necessarily feed into that.
- 31:35So, and it's not taking anything away from,
- 31:38as Corey is saying,
- 31:39mayhem and EMOM and even comp train.
- 31:42Like there are people that
- 31:43love that stuff and they
- 31:44want to be competitive and
- 31:45they want to do those
- 31:46things and go for it.
- 31:47For me personally,
- 31:48that's just not the kind of
- 31:50CrossFit that I signed up for.
- 31:57So that's it.
- 32:04Um,
- 32:06I'm going to finish up today
- 32:08now that I got the ben rant
- 32:11off of my chest uh if you
- 32:13have not seen the coffee
- 32:15pods and mods interview
- 32:16with daniel chaffee
- 32:18yesterday matt souza had a
- 32:19show where he got out a lot
- 32:22of red yarn connected a lot
- 32:25of dots a little bit hard
- 32:28to follow did my best
- 32:32it seems that CrossFit is
- 32:33selling or has been sold or
- 32:36is close to selling.
- 32:38And with his ball of yarn
- 32:41connected these dots that
- 32:43an entity in Europe named B
- 32:45sport is behind this,
- 32:47the purchase and that they
- 32:49own the hustle up app.
- 32:51They own, uh, Northern spirit clothing.
- 32:56Um,
- 32:59And somehow in that ball of yarn,
- 33:01one of the connected dots
- 33:02was that Daniel Chaffee had
- 33:04a good shot at being CEO.
- 33:09What I'll tell you is I
- 33:10watched the interview on
- 33:12coffee pods and wants today.
- 33:15to see if that question was
- 33:17going to be asked and what
- 33:19his response to that was.
- 33:21I am less inclined to believe that that is,
- 33:25uh, the case and who,
- 33:30and him not being the CEO, but dang,
- 33:33after listening to the full interview,
- 33:35I would love him to be the CEO.
- 33:40And, um,
- 33:44So it's,
- 33:45it's interesting when that came up and,
- 33:48and he even at the very end
- 33:50of it acknowledges that he
- 33:52knew that there was
- 33:53discussion yesterday about
- 33:56him being CEO and all of that.
- 33:58And he was very flattered by it.
- 34:00But, um, but he is, he is just,
- 34:06he's been around CrossFit
- 34:08for a very long time.
- 34:09He owns three boxes in France and,
- 34:12that seem very, very popular.
- 34:15Um,
- 34:15I think the one Jimmy said had eight
- 34:17hundred members.
- 34:18Um,
- 34:19he is the organizer of the French
- 34:21Throwdown.
- 34:22One thing I found
- 34:23interesting is of the
- 34:25twelve years they've put that on,
- 34:27only five years have they made a profit.
- 34:30Um, and
- 34:37The important part,
- 34:38and I really want to talk
- 34:39about this with the ladies
- 34:41on Sunday Night CrossFit Talk,
- 34:42so we'll probably bring that up there.
- 34:45But he said it's all really
- 34:46important as to who the buyer is.
- 34:48If it's another one of these
- 34:51holding companies or
- 34:56investment banker types,
- 35:00He didn't seem interested at
- 35:02all to be a CEO.
- 35:03If it's someone that's
- 35:04passionate about CrossFit
- 35:06and wants to grow it,
- 35:08then he did seem interested,
- 35:11but he said there's a half
- 35:12a dozen people he think
- 35:13could do a better job or as
- 35:16good a job as he could.
- 35:19And the way he kind of described it was,
- 35:22we don't need someone in
- 35:23here to come and do a flip.
- 35:26You buy like a four hundred
- 35:27year old mansion and you
- 35:29don't want someone to come
- 35:30in and just to try to flip
- 35:31it to sell it off.
- 35:33You want someone that's
- 35:34going to come in and handle
- 35:37the renovations with care
- 35:38and have something
- 35:39beautiful at the end
- 35:41because it has a history, a rich history,
- 35:45a beautiful history.
- 35:47And you want to accentuate that
- 35:51and,
- 35:51and it needs to be something that
- 35:54someone wants to keep around for fifteen,
- 35:56twenty, thirty years, um,
- 36:00which I found fascinating,
- 36:02but it's a great interview, um,
- 36:06here's what it looks like
- 36:08if you hop over to YouTube, uh, again,
- 36:11it's on the Coffee Pods and Wads channel,
- 36:14uh,
- 36:16That is Daniel Chaffee right there.
- 36:19It is The State of CrossFit
- 36:20is the title of the video.
- 36:23And it's very well done.
- 36:27I really, really enjoyed it.
- 36:29And I think he brought a lot
- 36:32to the table as to what can
- 36:34be done to make things better.
- 36:36He also, I think, cleared up.
- 36:44I think he makes statements
- 36:46in here about that if
- 36:49you're a private equity
- 36:50company coming in and you
- 36:52have a roadmap as to how to
- 36:54make profit and that does
- 36:56not meet your expectations
- 36:59in the first year or two,
- 37:01then you just start saying
- 37:02no to anything that costs money.
- 37:07And he insinuates that that
- 37:08is what Don has been faced
- 37:10with for the last couple years.
- 37:14is that the private equity
- 37:15firm is basically just
- 37:17saying no to everything that costs money.
- 37:24So if it is selling hope
- 37:27that it's someone that's
- 37:28passionate about CrossFit
- 37:30that wants it to grow,
- 37:32that wants it to be the
- 37:33beautiful thing that it is,
- 37:35and not just a fast remodel
- 37:39flip to sell off in a few years.
- 37:45so yeah with that it's been
- 37:50a rough day for me I'm
- 37:52gonna go chill back at my
- 37:54work desk and uh crossfit
- 38:00says cut cut cut make the
- 38:02asset sellable on paper
- 38:04right and I think at this
- 38:06point because their plan
- 38:08didn't go as they saw it it's cut cut cut
- 38:13And try not to lose as much
- 38:15money as possible.
- 38:19So don't forget tomorrow.
- 38:21We have Justin Kotler on the show, uh,
- 38:23three PM Eastern noon Pacific, uh,
- 38:27talking about underdogs and
- 38:28what happened with Ricky.
- 38:30Um,
- 38:32In addition to that,
- 38:35we've got the Sunday Night
- 38:35Show coming back this week.
- 38:37We've got the Roundtable tomorrow.
- 38:39We'll talk about all this
- 38:40stuff that's been going on.
- 38:41I know some of the
- 38:42Roundtable folks have
- 38:43strong feelings about Ben Bergeron,
- 38:45so that may be a topic again tomorrow.
- 38:49But yeah, with that, lunch is over.
- 38:54Get back to work, you hooligans.
- 38:56And I will see you guys tomorrow.
- 39:01Bye.
