- 0:00SPEAKER_03: Fast G land lovers and welcome to episode 176 of Project Gecology.
- 0:06SPEAKER_03: We are embarking on an epic adventure this time around, but I can't do it alone.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: We're gonna be covering Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: Dead man's chest.
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: I think that this is gonna be a fantastic episode.
- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Swashbuckling, rum everywhere, kinda dirty, rotting teeth, savvy, but I can't do it alone.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: And of course, I'm joined by Thank you, Richard.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: That was incredibly uh Mid-Atlantic?
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Mid-Atlantic, but also Caribbean.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: I'm a privateer.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: A lot of uh yeah, you're a little privateer, but yeah.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: My name is Dakota.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I am joined as always with Anthony, and I like how you're talking about Pirates of the Caribbean, but like it sounded like a baseball announcer at the same time.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he had that legend of Cora like Yeah, welcome to Republic City!
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, absolutely, but yes, and guess what?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: This week joining us again is Hi, I'm Jen.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Dakota's wife, everyone's favorite Jen.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, bootstrap dot he could tie her down to the flying Dutchman, but she is here.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we have put Stellan, we've given Stellan over to the grandparents for about an hour so that we can record a quick little podcast where we discuss all things Pirates of the Caribbean, dead a movie.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: You really gonna die on that hill?
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: Like is that what's one of my favorite things about this movie franchise is that people were going Pirates of the Caribbean, right, instead of Caribbean.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: And like for years.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Like it this like changed the language.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: When I was a kid, I questioned it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I didn't understand why.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Having been born in the Caribbean, I I think I I have some say I can say it however I want.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna it's gonna keep coming out in different ways.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: But anyway, yes.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: So we're discussing Pirates of the Caribbean Zappies Chest, the second one.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Two of five.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: And might be my favorite of the lot, but we'll get into that in short order.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: What have we been up to, folks?
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Start with Anthony.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Nothing too crazy.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: I told you guys a little bit off of the podcast that there's been some family changes.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I got family members are my I'm not gonna go too deep into it, but I have family members that are retiring and they are moving away into their retirement home.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: So I've been dealing with that and helping them pack up the house and you know, seeing a lot of it.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: So it's it's bittersweet, you're like happy for them, but it's also No, don't go.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: When we are like packing up the house, there's like a lot of like stuff from when we were younger that was like popping up, and that was crazy.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Something that I snagged, and I know like I'll never be able to use it ever again, but I'm like, dude, this is a relic of Blockbuster cards.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I know that this is something that I should throw away, but dude, this is a relic, bro.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I loved Blockbuster like growing up, and like I like I've gone to Blockbuster with everybody.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: I remember like going to Blockbuster with Dakota numerous times with my grandparents, with my parents, so I was like, yeah, there's a lot of good memories tied to that, but there is that.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: I have been so now I'm popping between two Final Fantasies, Dakota.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: I'm playing Final Fantasy XIV, like I said before, but then it's been a long time since I played 12, so I'm playing 12 now.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Hey, 12 is great.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: 12 is a really fun one.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: So which one is the Final Fantasy?
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: No, they're each Final Fantasy, that's the thing.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: So they're not connected to each other in any way.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: There is no connective tissue between Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: It's just so Square Enix thought, or it was Squaresoft at the time, thought that they were going out of business.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: So they made it they made one Final Fantasy.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: And it did really well.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: So they did a Final Fantasy II, there's a new story.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: They had some carryover monsters and creatures that carried over into each the game, and then that became just a serial thing where you each game has chocobos and moogles sometimes.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: They have certain types of magic and magic growth systems that go throughout the games and everything.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: But character-wise, world-wise, story-wise, setting, it's entirely different every time.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: So there is currently the the final fantasy is 16.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Currently.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: But uh we'll see.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: That that is the current Final Fantasy.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: But yeah, no, that that that is actually a pretty crazy story.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: That's like, you know, making something and just like this is the end, and then it just blowing up.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: It's like, I guess we gotta stick with that.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Um this is the end too.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: This is yeah, but yeah, that that's crazy.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: The the story is definitely interesting, and then now when you think of Square Enix, you think of high quality.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: So, what does that tell you?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Never give up.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: Doesn't tell me much.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's what it does tell me, yes.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Well, they almost did though, but yeah.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: That was them like before they gave up.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was their death rattles.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Let's jump over to Rich.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: What have you been up to, sir?
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: So school started this week, so it's been a little bit kind of hectic there.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but getting to know the kids, I have a cardboard cut out in my room that's life size.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I completely of himself, people.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: It's not just like a cardboard cut out of like Bowser.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: It's a cardboard cutout of of our post in Rich.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: And it's diagonally across from where my desk is.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: So like theoretically at all times, Lacone has eyes on you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Oh and the best part is that like I forget about it, it's just there now, right?
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: But these new students are not used to it.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: So like they like jump scare every time they walk in the room because they see me by the desk and they walk in and they're like, oh.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: So it's been rather enjoyable to kind of go through that.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: I'm really loving it.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I just gotta, you know, I mean, it's been a long week.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Three days, it's a lot.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: But uh no, it's just kind of getting into the hang of it.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm waiting for Wolverine.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: I'm very excited.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: I pre-ordered it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: That's one of the I often don't pre-order games when like school has just started, but I feel like I have to.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: I'm not on I've I don't know if you guys saw the GTA release like on Netflix, so I got to check that out.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: I'm kind of excited about it, but I also have some trepidation.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: It's kind of personal stuff, but I love the franchise a lot, but then I I kind of uh this is a big downer, but uh whatever.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Uh lost a friend and a kind of uh pedestrian accident, and then it felt weird to play the game.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: So it's been a couple years.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: I'm hoping like I the game stuff so amazing that I don't want to not play it, but at the same time I have a little bit of trepidation about what it's gonna be like to go back to it.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: Uh and then just watching the Mets lose.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: The one nice thing is I got a lot of free stuff from the Mets, not free, of giveaways, and we have extras.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: So I started asking kids at school if they were Met fans and just like throwing out bobbleheads and jerseys and extra shirts and kids who don't even like the Mets, they're like, that's a good sleep shirt.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: That that's kind of that's kind of been the week.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: See, I still consider that free stuff.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: It's a giveaway, yes.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: And yes, there are hidden fees like the the cost of the mittens, but um I still consider the the freebies that you get at games free stuff.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you know, I I told them the kids who just didn't want they're not really baseball fans.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: I said, well, if I give you this, do I have your baseball soul?
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: And they all said yes.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: So I think I made about seven more Numet fans to uh to commiserate with.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: It's great.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like starting at cold.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: There is one girl in my class who's got season tickets, so we're like immediately best of friends.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: It's like, what?
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: No way.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: So actually old Joe decided to complain about it, but the first week is really cool because you get to you're getting to learn, meet a whole group new group of kids, and it's kind of exciting.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: It's scary, but it's exciting at the same time.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: I'm sure uh what have you been up to, Jen?
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: You doing anything?
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what you've been up to?
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: So I went to the first day of school and I said hi to the kids, and then I was like, hi you both people.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: She's a teacher, folks.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: She's uh she's an English teacher, you know, a tenured English teacher.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: First day back at school, peace far.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: I guess showed up and I was like, hey, I'm Miss Lopez, and I had a little screen on the board that said stuff about me, and I was like, but I'm gonna be here today, and then I'm gonna be gone tomorrow.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: And like you'd see the look on their faces.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: What is she talking about?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, really.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: They thought it was a joke.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, really, I am leaving, and I'll be back when I'm poor.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: It was basically like Bilbo's speech on his 111th birthday, you know?
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: Like if you would have said that word for word, I think I would have cried.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Like half of you as much as I'm like, I wish I would have thought about that.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I wish I would have thought of that.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I said when I come back, you know that I need a paycheck, and that's why I will be returning.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: So what have you been up to content-wise or whatever?
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be 100% honest.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Almost every single morning, the baby wakes me up, I go downstairs, make a cup of coffee, and I watch this YouTuber, Walt Disney World Kevin, WDW Kevin.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: It's this wonderful gay man who trades pins in the parks with his partner, and they they review food and they trade the pins.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: She is on a I am obsessed.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: WDW Kevin.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: I watch him every single day.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: He isn't.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And then his his phrases bleed into my everyday life.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: My everyday life.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I I quote him all the time.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: So if something is real, it's a real deal banana peel.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: And if something's fake, it's a bukitty.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's a boo bookdie.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Don't like that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: When it's windy outside, he always goes, Oh, it's Wendy Williams out here.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: And I love that one sort of saying that one.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: I took I'm taking all his phrases.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: I love them.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you do.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: What have I been up to?
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, uh, I just want to shout out Lanterns, the DC show.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: I know, Anthony, you started Lanterns, I think, this past week.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: I watched the first two episodes.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: I haven't watched this past Sundays, but so far I've been enjoying it.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: It's pretty good.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Dude, episode three is one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in a very long time.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: It's an origin story for Jon Stewart.
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: When are they gonna get to the part that he gets to the Daily Show?
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Because I'm just I don't see how he goes from being a lantern to being on Comedy Central.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Like I'm that's the one thing I don't understand.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: It's they have to wait until after the Sinestro arc where he actually shows a little bit of fear and eventually the Guardians relegate him to nighttime television.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: That's a ways off.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: I think I I've been controlling myself as I'm watching the show, but I'm just like every time they're like Jon Stewart, I'm not in the See when I when I see Jon Stewart, like clips of his show, I think of the comic book character.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Most people don't, but I'm I'm in that that group where I grew up with uh I actually do too, Dakota.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And I think that you um no, I don't think I know that you consumed a lot more DC than I did.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: But yeah, like whenever I thought think of Jon Stewart, I always think of Green Lantern.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Actually, whenever I think of Green Lantern, I think of Jon Stewart because that's who I got to know.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: It wasn't until after uh Especially in the cartoons.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Most of the cartoons that we grew up with, like the Justice League stuff, I think they used John Super Friends.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Super Friends, I think it had the Help Jordan, but I think Jon Stewart was like the Justice League of the that that Justice Justice League Unlimited, yeah.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he was that one.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: And he was cool.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: But yeah, Lanterns, really good.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Episode three, knocked it out of the park, I'm blown away.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: And I started reading the first Halo book.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I was just, you know, I've just been in a reading funk after I finished Dungeon Crawler Carl, and I was just like, what is something completely foreign to me?
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: And it's this video game franchise that has always been around since I was a kid, and has always been in my periphery because my friends, namely Anthony and a couple others, yeah.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: You know, I was a big Halo fan back in the day.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: I was talking about it.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: I always had Halo, yeah, they always had Halo on.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: A lot of multiplayer action.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Occasionally I would play like a a level of the campaign or two, but I didn't really know what was going on besides cool weapons, ugly enemies, and really fun PvP.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: I I jumped into reading the first book and I found out that the first novel, Halo, the Fall of Reach, actually came out before the first game.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: So it was a tie-in novel that was released before the first game actually came out.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: So I I feel like I'm reading like Halo history in a way, like, because it is an origin story to the the Flood or the first game, Combat Evolved.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: So I'm I'm excited about that.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: And then I'll jump into the second book in the series called The Flood, which is an adaptation of Combat Evolved.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's uh l literally like the novelization of Halo Combat Evolved.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, they don't have any novelizations of the next couple books, but there are a lot of novels.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: So I'm sure we'll have some fun.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: If I if I you know continue that far.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: But anyway, I'm enjoying it.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we should talk about Dead Man's Chest and what's in that chest.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: I thought you froze for it was like you froze, like you glitched in the matrix, but then like Gen move.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: So I was like trying to think.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: So he's not frozen.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: I don't know which is this.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: I'll start with this.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: He really did.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: He was just like, Oh man.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: All I know, and I think I I think you guys can vouch for me on this one.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of juice in this movie.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: A lot of slimy creatures, a lot of tentacular action, and yeah, like I said, a lot of juice.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: And it reminded me of when I would have been sitting in this seat right now where I'm of people just waiting for juice puns as Rich shoves a voodoo ranger into his it is actually unofficial.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: I'm confusing myself.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: Guys, I'm tired.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: I have a newborn.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: I can't think straight.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: My my my neurons are not firing like they are supposed to.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: But I do know this.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I want you to make a juicy five star review for the podcast.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Wherever you listen to your podcast, click that five star button.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: And if you don't do it, you're gonna walk the plank.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Just the mere fact that you click that five stars juicy enough for today.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Appreciate you.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: And on with the show.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: What do we think of Hey, hey, I'm boat in here.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Or or why is Pirate like that?
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's now it's more like New York.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: So bizarre.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: You're trying to sound like Raiden, aren't you?
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And then someone back in time was pretending to be a pirate.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: It's like someone from a different time period pretending to be a pirate.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: I don't get it.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: He's trying to be the pirates of the Caribbean version of Dale Carradine.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: He's trying to be Raiden.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: Are we gonna do this all episode?
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: It's Caribbean, please.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Please.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: No, it said I said Carradine.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Alright, sorry.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: I remember being a kid in the city.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: But I will be saying it all day, Caribbean.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I hope you get used to it.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember like trying to look up like is it Caribbean or Caribbean?
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: And I didn't know how to get the internet to like tell me pronunciation.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Is it Caribbean or Caribbean?
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: I didn't understand why this happened.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: We were in Disney World.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: This is kind of off topic, but it's still very much on topic.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: We were at Disney World, and they have a new bar called the Beak and Barrel, which is across the s like across the the street from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Like we're with Jen's brother and his girlfriend, and they're wowed at the It was an okay little restaurant.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: It was more like, you know, snacks and a couple of hard liquors, which is pretty interesting for like the Magic Kingdom, which notoriously does not serve alcohol.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: But they were very floored by the the setting, which is very like pirate themed tiki bar, but also that like all of this came from like the the aesthetic of the movies, and I'm just like, no, it's from the ride.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: And they they were like, but the ride came from the movie.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: And I was just like, and I I couldn't believe it.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Like, there are people out there who do genuinely believe that these movies came before the ride.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I think I thought that at one point.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Because I I didn't grow up going to Disney.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: So then when I went on the ride, I just assumed it was like I had watched the movies growing up way before I went on the ride, so I didn't know.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Jack Jack Sparrow did not exist before the movies.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like like if you go on Pirates of the Caribbean now, you'll see him.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: But he wasn't on there.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Like he's brand new.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Not brand new now, but like there was a once upon a time that he was not on that ride.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: And Barbosa also shows up on the ride now.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: One of the opening scenes.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: In California.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: That's actually one of my favorite characters, and he's not in this movie until the end.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: In Florida?
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: He's oh yeah, he's in the boat.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: No, did they just change something in California?
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: That's what I thought you were showing.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: When I was at Disney, California, that was the time that I had bought the tricorder hat that had it had the the bandana with it and the hair.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: It had everything, and I put it on, and that's famously where I was stopped by a little kid who's I guess they must have gotten off I don't know the ride or something, and he points and he goes to his dad, Hey look, it's Captain Jack.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: I said, Can I go take a picture?
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: And I you know, I'm not an employee.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: I was I'll be honest, I was smoking a cigarette, just sitting on a bench, and suddenly a seven-year-old boy is yelling at me, like, Captain Jack, can I have a picture?
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Hey Logan, give me a second, maybe and I had to put my cigarette out and go take a picture with him, which was fantastic.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: I didn't think they allowed smoking at this last.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: I knew the map very well, sir, and I could find every smoking section.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: Also, this is a series that did launch.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Now they don't have smoking sections.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: No, this was like 15 years ago.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: And then this also launched my favorite song of all time.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Easily top three songs of all time, I think, is Yoho.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, sir.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Have you ever had the pleasure of listening to Lonely Island and Michael Bolton?
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: There's a song called Jack Sparrow.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: Where Michael Bolton comes into the city.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Michael Bolton comes into the studio to record the song and it's about a club, and the the gentlemen are singing about a club, and when it kicks to Michael Bolton, he can't stop singing about the Prince of Tortuga.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: And I um I it is probably one of like it's probably one of the top four songs played on my so on my phone ever.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: Like if you did my Spotify, which I didn't have for a long time, but it would always be like I will drive to work and listen to that song on repeat three times just because I love belting it out so much.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it it just wrapped up everything I love about these movies.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: I played the games, I watched all the movies, I had gear, people had me go to birthday parties and dress up as Captain Jack.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: I love this franchise.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: What the hell?
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Alright, we're we're unlocking rich lore left and right today.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: The rich lore.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: I'm actually I feel like the fact that you have Spotify would disappoint.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: No, no, I have Apple I have I I uh well I listen, Gar Mayty.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: You know I'd be stealing them songs.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Like come on for a very long time.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: I only got Apple Music because honestly, my family it was convenient for my family.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Or maybe G at this.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: Look, man, we we live we all lived through the 2000s.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: That was the great pirate era that launched right alongside like pretty much One Piece.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: So we were all just having pirate eras everywhere.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: We had scurvy, but Limewire was able to stop the scurvy because of the citrus.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: No, LimeWire gave me scurvy.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Like, that's like Yes, it gave our PCs scurvy.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: I hate LimeWire.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Like, I I'm so glad we evolved from LimeWire to Torrents.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it just made life so much.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: None of us actually pirate anything, guys.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: This is all a facade we're putting on for the benefit of you, the listener.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: We are upstanding citizens who buy our CDs.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't drink beer either.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: We do that.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: That's legal.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Not right now, at least.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: Anyway, let's actually talk about the movie.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: So uh a little bit of time has passed.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: We are interrupt like they interrupt the marriage of William Turner and Elizabeth Swan.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: I don't think we actually see them getting married, but my battery's dying.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: It's like the day of.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is it is the day of.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: And in the rain.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Just in the rain.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Crying.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Crying.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: And some new guy from the East India Trading Company comes around and has some papers that we're gonna behead you all for aiding and abetting this dirty pirate named Jack Sparrow.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: And they they both correct him, Captain Jack Sparrow.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: And that just like seals their fate right then and there.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: You guys are dumb.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: I appreciate the respect.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: I don't think he re appreciates the respect.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: He doesn't care.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: No, he doesn't.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Especially when he can't get away with saying he wasn't captain for 13 years.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Right, like he's a captain until like until it like benefits him.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: He's like, Technically, I wasn't.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: That was really funny that at the beginning they emphasized yes, he's gone around clerics.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: That he is a captain until now.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: That sends us on a interesting little journey of trying to figure out what the heck is up with Jack's compass.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: And I think it's actually one of my favorite additions to the Pirates of the Caribbean lore is this compass that always points to what they want most in the world.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: I think it's a fascinating little device that really pushes this particular film to its limits because we get a couple people who we see, namely Elizabeth and Jack, what they want most in the world.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: And I think oh, and Will Turner, I believe, briefly.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: And it's just not working for Jack.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: And do we get an answer as to why?
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: I I I have my own headcanon as to why, but I don't remember if they actually tell us why it wasn't working for Jack.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Isn't it not working because it keeps pointing at Elizabeth?
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: I did not read it that way.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, I thought it was that he had a crush on Elizabeth.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that it was con like he was his And that's why he tricks her into using it because he figures it'll be easier because his desires are confused right now.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: See, I interpreted it as he loved the ship.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: So whenever he was on the ship, it was just going haywire.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: He was unable to make a heading for anywhere.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: Because when he was on the ship, it should have pointed at a single direction.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: There's no way Elizabeth Turner was jumping across the map like that.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: You don't know what she's up to.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Not that fast.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: Not like while he hasn't accompanied.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: And I think that final scene of him like just after he tells Gibbs to abandon ship, where he just looks at the ship longingly, and you see him from behind.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: I think that is his true love, is the ship ultimately.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: Elizabeth Swan is just a temptation.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: That's my read.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: I I absolutely love Gibbs' fit, like his style.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: I just think he's the bee's knees.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: He's got great facial hair, fantastic way to carry his hair.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: I just really like Gibbs.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: He might be my favorite character in the whole franchise.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Is that a base year look on?
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: No, Wolverine.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: But like it's it is shocking that I know that I can fall back and just quickly cosplay as Gibbs with no problem.
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: Like he's just the man.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: I just I love a strong sideburn.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Oh boy, do you.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: That's your next cosplay, bro.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: I would love, love, love to bring back a pirate's cosplay.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Nothing.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: I just don't know that he's a recognizable enough character.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: Like when you're watching Pirates of the Caribbean, it's the actor.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: But I don't know that his fits, as you say, are recognizable enough.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Well, if he gets Charlie to go as Jack.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like one of the I dressed even if I dressed up as a guy from Miami Vice, and I dressed up as Don Johnson, and my friend was like, no one's ever gonna know who I am.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: And I was like, if you walk in with me, they're gonna know.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: And when we walked in together, they're like, oh, it's the guys from Miami Vice.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: But if we were separate, we were just weird dudes and blazers.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: So I think it's the combination of the thing.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think if like Rich, Charlie, and Lauren go as a trio.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because even Will Turner, like, his outfit isn't enough that like you would know immediately that it was Will Turner.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: He has to be next to a Jack Sparrow or something.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Can I borrow Stellan and put some like crustaceans on his face and get him to be Billstrapping?
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Crustaceans on my son's face.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Barclays.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Barnacles, sorry.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Anthony was joking in the group chat that uh, you know, Stellan, our son, was in this film, but uh playing bootstrap Bill Turner.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: But no.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: He's part of the show.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: He's part of the crew.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: He's a baby on board.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Can we talk a little bit about the crew of the flying Dutchman?
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: No?
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: I actually, okay, we can talk about the talk about the crew of the flying Dutchman.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: I also want to talk about the crew of the Black Pearl.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I have a talking point.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: You have a talking point.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: We were already on the Black Pearl, so let's go back to that.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: I think it's actually one cool side note that I noticed in this watch.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: I've seen this movie so many times, but I hadn't really thought about how they got the worst people in Tortuga to trade as souls.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: He needed a hundred souls, but in the end they actually were performing really well and doing a good job.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: And it's like this little side story about how if you believe in people and give them an opportunity, they can actually rise to the occasion.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Like it was like the worst people, they got a chance, and then they were the ones like saving the black pearl.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: That might that was cool.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: That might be my favorite read of this movie ever.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: That that's actually a true head.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: It's such a teacher read.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Like believe in the children, and then they'll be able to run the ship.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: But I thought that was interesting.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: It was like the lowest losers on Tortuga.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Land of the losers.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: They were so happy for a chance.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: I think growing up, I realized more and more that Jack Sparrow is a real scumbag.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: He has very little redeeming qualities outside of being very charismatic and just a joy to experience on screen.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Which is a redeeming quality, I will admit.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: But the idea that he is Joyce going to conscript 100 men who have nothing going for them just so that he can feed them to Davy Jones meat grinding.
- 27:17SPEAKER_01: I think you're missing a game.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: They're pirates, my friend.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: They're not pirates aren't good people to begin with.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: If you get recruited to go and be on a pillaging vessel, and then you get sent to death because you signed up to be a criminal.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: I think that's that's what you signed up for, man.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: You're a pirate.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Gar.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: You're gonna take an over.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: You're gonna get swindled, you're gonna get bamboozled.
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: Like all those long words that sound fun.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: Gar.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: What what are you uh what are you trying to say?
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Am I missing a key point?
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, the whole movie is about whether or not Jack Sparrow is a good person, and you're interpreting it as he's a bad person.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: But a key point to this would be that he thought he was gonna kill Davy Jones anyway.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: So he wasn't actually thinking they were going to die with Davy Jones.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: I see your point.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: It's just way too I don't it's way too risky.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: So did you not trust Elizabeth Swan?
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's a big risk taker.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: Elizabeth Swan said you're a good man, right?
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Nobody ever said that to Lana Lang, right?
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: But Jack Sparrow gets told like he's a good man.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nobody said you're a good man to Lana Lang.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know that I trust Elizabeth Swan, actually.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: She's at the end of this movie, there's three men fighting over her, and I think that if you're in that position where three men are fighting over you, something's gone wrong.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: I would love for that to happen.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: Three men, yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Greg, Dakota, and you look like you have something to say.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: What's that?
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Whenever I think about this movie, I always think about that scene always pops up like where they're like fighting on that water mill.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Like when it breaks all of a sudden, like they're like fighting.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: It is probably the best choreographed fight scene I think I've ever seen.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Not even it's not even just the fighting.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: It's not like the the hand-to-hand movements, it's just the kineticism.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: The it's like always a moving set.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: The camera's not never still once, there's always something happening, and the scenes cut in a way where you never are unsure of what you're looking at.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: There's always very easy to watch, very easy to understand, but extremely complex.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: And I've never experienced another fight quite like that one.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: Like I I I don't think there's a single fight in like the entirety of like superhero comic movies that I I can say I enjoy more than that that scene on the window.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: It's just so well done.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Not even like Secret Invasion, the big fight with Amelia Clark.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, with Gia.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it's a close no.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: It's not.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: But it's a close no.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: It's a close no.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: I want to use that lido on a kid.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: Like, oh, is that right?
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: Like, no, it's a close no, though.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: I didn't even say that like wittily.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: Like that that's just me being tired.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: That was me like that was me like jumping forward to the next sentence.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Some of the best things are said when you're exhausted.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: It's the truth.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Rich is saying hits after hits these days.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: It's a close no.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: Alright, so Davy Jones crew.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Yes, Rich, to answer your question.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Most of it is CGI.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Most of it.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're not really So I thought like Stellan's like Barnacles.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Wait, but wait, I think he might be the only one, right?
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Correct, yes.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: So don't you don't have to be so worried.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: He Stellan Skarsgard is the only one who decided that they were going to go the makeup route.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: He wanted to do it practically.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: And I think it it definitely works.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: I will say, now that this movie's aged a little bit, it's a more striking difference.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Like we it's a lot easier to pick out him from the batch than some of the other characters who are much more monstrous in their recreations and like their sea creature-ness.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: But one of my favorite characters on the ship, I forget the guy's name, but it's it's the guy that's been there a long time and just kind of melted into the ship.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Such a cool character design where he pulls forward and his like skin almost makes like a coral shape, but you could see his brain still like rooted into the into the ship's hole.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Such a cool design.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: The old guy?
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: For for a character.
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: The old guy, the really old guy.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: You'll never find the key and you'll never find the chest.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: Can't believe you went to kids' birthday parties dressed as a pirate with that accent.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: You didn't workshop it, you didn't really refine it.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: I will say that the amount of rum ingested definitely changes it, right?
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Like if we were three- You were just slurring your speech at that point.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we were that's what made you sound like a pirate.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: Just three rums in, and suddenly the Mid-Atlantic is gone.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Sorry guys, uh, we are gone now, and now I'm a pirate.
- 32:12SPEAKER_03: So I just changed.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: I'm just waiting for you to announce the the what were they called again?
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: The the in the fights in Legend decorat?
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or the battles called and that.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, uh Get ready for another skirmish.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: What is it called?
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: That's pretty good.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: That's l literally what I'm waiting for.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Um like, what are you doing, Rich?
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Why are you not announcing those battles?
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: Those competitions.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: I was born in the wrong decade, guys.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: I should have been born in 1940, sorry.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: What about like in Clone Wars?
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: The Separatists have taken Geonosis.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: Absolutely amazing.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: But my pirates are terrible.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: I I really I just I can get so like we're not talking about older movies, but I've watched I mean, and we can have an argument about this later, but I just get just sucked in.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: Like it this is a movie that like when it was on like TBS or something, even with commercials, I'm like, let's go, gotta watch it.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: Every time I see it on TV, I have to put it on.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: I absolutely just and this I think Dakota has the point.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: I think this structurally and because of the characters, I think this might be the best one.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and that's not to say that the first isn't a good movie, and it's by all accounts, it's much better than it has any right to be.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: This is based off of a theme park ride.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: That's really not the idea.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: I think that out of all of their theme park ride movies, the Pirates of the Caribbean ones are it's like the most successful.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Like they're the best ones.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think there is a Pirates of the Caribbean ride in each not every park, but every every Disneyland in the world.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: I think there's a Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: Maybe not Paris, actually.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's one in Paris.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Rich, I'm just gonna start saying Pirates of the Caribs.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: I'd be fair, I'd be better off with that because I just feel like we know I don't know, we don't say S Star Wars, we say Star Wars, right?
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: Like it's Caribbean.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Um I did want to talk about Elizabeth's character development.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: I thought it was kind of cool, especially as a kid going from her being in this like corset where she can't breathe and is fainting, and then suddenly in this movie she's like stabbing people and being called a pirate by one of the biggest pirates, Jack Sparrow.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's no longer the damsel in distress.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: She's the ghost aboard some random ship luring people.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's tricking people, she's getting deceptive, and you could interpret it as her not being a good person, but I think that's what makes her complex interesting.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: She's a damsel that causes distress now.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she is.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Good thinking.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just thought I I don't know, watching this movie, I remember really, really liking Elizabeth Swan when I was younger and these films were coming out, and watching it, it's it's not like even I don't know, it's not like overtly trying to be feminist, but by making a character complex and able to have flaws without being like the perfect pretty girl is great.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she even blended in as like the the crew of some like.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I can't.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: My only thing is so these guys never have a change of clothes, right?
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: They're always wearing the same thing, but somehow she manages to find the one nobody on the ship's like, wait, I'm missing a change of clothes, right?
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Where's the woman?
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: We can't find her.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: And I just love that there's a woman right there.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: And okay, let's be like honest, right?
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: She's an attractive woman, right?
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: This idea that like just because she has a hat on, they're like, uh, look at that young boy swapping the deck.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: It's definitely not a girl.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: I just think it's kind of ridiculous.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Especially men at sea for that long and they're just like completely oblivious to the fact that there's a woman in their part in their midst is a little why don't they know each other?
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Like, how big is this?
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the other thing.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Like, like you don't know.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Like, we if we were like in a department meeting and then all of a sudden there was like a random person that was like, What about the test scores?
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: We would all realize they don't belong.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Who's that?
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: It's the rum.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: They just they couldn't see past the rum.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: I guess they were in a moment of fear and anxiety.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: So I guess it would be like if during a fire drill there was like a random person, like, go down that corridor.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: But I think I would still clock this person doesn't work here.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Where's your ID?
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: How big is our staff?
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: Where's your ID?
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know everybody's names, but like I I kind of have like a general idea of who these people are.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: It's like that one Rick and Morty episode where they just have that guy who's somehow been with them the entire series named Mr.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Poopy Butthole, and nobody like nobody realizes that he isn't supposed to be there, but he's just like, yeah, I'm I'm here.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: You know, like that's that's just his he was just that guy's such a hard lighted into the show.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: That guy's such a hard light, man.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: Oh man, the show used to be so good.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: Where was I?
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: Davy Jones.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: I I think despite Stellan Skarsgaard having chosen the practical route, this film is one of the best CGI movies of the 2010s.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Dude, I was about to say that same exact thing.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: I was like, why does this look good?
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: And why does it look better than some of the CGI stuff that we get now?
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: I will say CGI has advanced since this movie.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: It's not that it hasn't advanced, but they used it very well.
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: The the lighting of this film was perfect for what they tried to do, especially with Davy Jones.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: If they did Davy Jones nowadays, it would be a lot more pixel definition, a lot more dynamic lighting and everything.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: But maybe the colors wouldn't be there because we tend to live in a world that desaturates things left and right.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: But it holds up as some of the best CGI for its time ever.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: And I think that is something that's just so cool.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: You the the facial expressions from Davy Jones is you know exactly how he's feeling at all times.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: My favorite shot of this movie is right after he opens the chest to see that it's empty, and he'll just like hold his face up in just shock and despair, and you see like the the blood draining out of his face, and it's that's damn you Jack Sparrow! You know, like that that scene blows me away.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: And he's uh it's Bill Knight.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: Bill Knight, right?
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: He was in a what is it, uh, the zombie movie in Britain.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: Why am I he was in Harry Potter?
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: Sean of the Dead?
- 38:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Sean of the Dead, where he's just like he's the stepdad and he's not really evil, but he just like you know, he's he's like strict and stuff like that, and like he's gets bitten and he's dying.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: But I I got to say like the the facial expressions that he has without makeup in Shauna of the Dead, it's amazing that they were able like I knew it was him, you know, like it like it's his facial expressions, it's not just like a facial expression, it's it's actually his.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: So like the fact that they captured that, I thought it was I thought they were real effects.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: So I mean, uh kind of surprised because it's it's like they do such a good job of incorporating his face at a time where I don't know if CGI was really doing it that well.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:25SPEAKER_02: He plays Rufus Scrimger in the seventh Harry Potter movie.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: And he's a great bad guy, but he's also a great good guy, too.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: There's an episode of Doctor Who, it's one of my favorite episodes.
- 39:39SPEAKER_02: It's just like such a strange episode because it's n nothing ever happens quite like it, where they take Vincent Van Gogh out of his time period and take him to uh like a the the Musee d'Orsay, the museum in Paris to show him how his life affected you know, how his life's work affected the world and changed the world.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: And Bill Nye is the one who is giving the exhort like the exhortation of Vincent Van Gogh's life, and it's it's just such a beautiful moment.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: It's it's one of the best.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: I did not connect, that was the same person.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's Bill Nye.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: He's also in Underworld, he was a great character in Underworld.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: That's right, he was like the head of the vampires, right?
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's yeah.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: Um that's another one I would like to watch soon.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: You want to cover that soon?
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: We should do that.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: I like his portrayal of Davy Jones, right?
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: You would think that that Davy Jones might be a little bit more like gruff and have a bit more of a gravelly voice, but this Davy Jones doesn't, but it works like really well.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: Like I feel like his portrayal is just really good.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: It's definitely a more slimy tentacly voice, if you ask me.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: I like when he goes like makes like little puppy noises with his lips.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: Popping noises, yeah.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: The Kraken is the Kraken's so cool.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: A cool monster.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: The you never know what you're gonna expect with it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: You don't know if you're like targeting the big tentacles or just the baby tentacles.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: I like how they summon it, summon it like a sandworm from Dune.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Like, you know how like they would make the Yeah, that's true.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: That they summoned the crack in the same way.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I thought, but it's really cool.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that and the CGI on that was like really good for the time.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: The shot of the tentacles like going up like past the cannon windows and like the suctions like clinging onto like the lip of the cannon, it was so cool.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: It's just such a parade of use of CGI and stuff.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: So I really liked Hans Emmer's music.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: I love this movie, but so much of what makes it work for me is Hans Emmer's just like sweeping magical score.
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: It's it you feel like a pirate while you're listening to it.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: You feel like you're breaking the law, and I I just get lost in the music of this movie, and it helps me get lost in the Caribbean.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: Happy Rich.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: What did you guys think of the movie as a whole?
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: I've used this phrase a lot.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: This is a swashbuckling rip-roaring good time, friends.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, if you if for some reason you live under a rock in a basement and you have no Wi-Fi, like Cindy from the Spider-Man series, I don't know, man.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: Go watch this now.
- 42:29SPEAKER_03: Stop what you're doing.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Don't even listen to the end of this.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: Like w fantastic.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: Even just Jack's eye makeup when he's being held on the island and then when his lids close, it looks like they're open.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: I just love everything.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: The actors are fantastic.
- 42:43SPEAKER_03: I don't think anything could be better about this movie.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: I really don't.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: I just it's one of the best franchises out there.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: If you can't sit down and watch this and enjoy it, you gotta really rethink what you're doing in this world.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: I don't know anybody who doesn't like this movie if you watch it.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: I want to be a pirate, I want to go on a boat, I wanna do all these things.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: It's fantastic.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: The I think the costuming is great, I think the accents are great, like it just when I hear the like that that the what is it on Tide or something?
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Like I can't remember that opening like salvo theme, but like when it's like that really orchestral theme when they're like taking off.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, like I just get like I want to like fly the mast or whatever it's called and pull something up.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: I don't know anything about boating, so I'm sorry.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: He's doing a lot of hand gestures right now.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, guys, I'm really excited.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 43:33SPEAKER_03: Like I'm when this was suggested last week by Dakota, I was like, he doesn't know how much I love this.
- 43:40SPEAKER_03: Uh just magic.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: Magic.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: It's honestly magic.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: I love the Pirates movies.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Fun fact when I first met Dakota's parents, we went out to a restaurant and they asked me what my favorite movie was, and my first thought was Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: And I didn't think that would be the answer.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: that they wanted to hear and I didn't know like I didn't want to sound childish so instead I said I liked historical dramas because I thought that kind of covered all my bases but like my like the forefront of my mind was pirates like I loved I love these movies I love the themes I love the idea that it's the East India trading company are like the real villains and then you have these pirates that are kind of breaking all the rules but we find them relatable and interesting and I love the development of the characters over the course of this series.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: I hope that we cover the third one.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: I would really like to do that at some point.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Not immediately but whenever and I was just like I love the visuals in this I don't know I don't think I have like the the terminology to explain what I'm trying to say but the opening part of the movie where they introduce I think his name is Beckett where he comes in on a horse on a boat and it's a very small shot but the fact that they put a real horse on this like small boat that's commitment.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: I don't even understand that isn't CGI they put that horse on that boat with an actor on top for such a tiny shot and it's just such a cool introduction couldn't he have gotten off his horse he he he can't get off his high horse that's that's his big issue.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: He can't get off his high horse but he just created such a cool visual or like fighting while this what are the the watermill what are those the yeah watermill water mill the fighting on the watermill and the dynamicism of all the of all the fight scenes I just said design it is just like cinema magic the whole like it's not only good stories good characters but just the the movie magic is really enjoyable to watch and I I'll never get sick of watching these movies.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: It has no right to be that good.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: Anthony?
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: No I I agree with you all I agree with the music absolutely amazing I don't think that I could watch these movies without that music.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: I can't imagine the movies without this music and yeah just overall great casting what I really liked about this movie is that it took something that was seemingly like just its own film and just like blew it up into there's more it blew up the world right like there's more lore and I know Dakota likes lore and this movie adds a lot more lore to the Pirates of the Caribbean Caribbean Caribs whatever as as Carib anybody says.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: But yeah it's just it's a fun movie.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: I actually remember seeing this in theaters with my stepdad it I think we went on a a Sunday I think my sisters were out with my mom and him and I we went to go see it and yeah yeah so I I I definitely have fond memories of this movie back then and and it was it was a delight to watch it again.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: I I I really do like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies especially the first three after that things get a little crazy but that that's just that's my take.
- 47:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah really quickly before we close out I remember when I went to see this for the first time I took my dad took me and my brothers and my two younger cousins and my youngest cousin was probably five or six at the time and I remember on the way home my my youngest cousin was like T Mike why did those guys look like that why did they why'd they look like fish and my dad he stopped at a a stoplight and he turned around he's just like that's what happens when you don't brush your teeth that sounds something like what your dad would say just like completely out out of nowhere random yeah but guys thank you so much for listening to us here for episode one seven six we had a great time talking pirates and we will be talking pirates in the near future methinks.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: Savvy drink up me hardys yoho peace
