- 2:50Plus Jason Quinchreil is going to join us from Union Mission. They have got
- 2:53a big thing going on during the month of May, and I will talk
- 2:57to Jason and also Lisa Pack That coming up a little bit later on,
- 3:00but right now I want to welcome to the show our good friend Hannah Gardner
- 3:04from the Canal Charles DuMaine Association with this week todopt me please, Pet of
- 3:07the week. Hannah, good morning. How are you? I'm great?
- 3:10How are you happy? Happy spring? Since you and I have talked,
- 3:15it is now officially spring, yes, and I'm happy because I'm ready for
- 3:19summer. Yeah. Well, you know, we've had some much cooler temperatures
- 3:22this week, a snow earlier this week, but that looks like we're going
- 3:24to warm up and finally get some springtime weather in here. All right,
- 3:29So let's get right to our pet of the week. It's Hazel. Hazel
- 3:32is her name is always picture posted at Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and on
- 3:38x the artist formerly known as Twitter. Hannah tell us all about Hazel.
- 3:44All right, So she is if enough, she is sad already. She's
- 3:50around a year old. And I always say that we have other guns and
- 3:54their teeth, so it's a roundabout. They could be a little less,
- 3:58they could be a little more. But she is around one year old.
- 4:03She is microchipped and she is vaccinated. She has been adopted before, but
- 4:11the reasonings are pretty much just everyone's saying that she likes to be outside,
- 4:18that she wants to be outside. She's tried to escape someone's yard before,
- 4:24so she can be a bit of it an escape artist. She is a
- 4:27smart girl, so she would really benefit from someone who likes to be outdoors
- 4:32as well, someone who would be willing to take her on some hikes or
- 4:35some walks, or maybe to some dog parks or something like that, something
- 4:41to keep her busy, keep her active. Yeah, so she would benefit
- 4:45from something like that. She's very playful with other dogs. She prefers playful
- 4:49dogs. She is kid friendly from what we have witnessed. Of course,
- 4:54in any home with any dog, even if we've noticed them to be the
- 4:57sweetest with the kids, always always feel a bad caution. Never leave them
- 5:01alone in a room, you always, I mean, you wouldn't bring a
- 5:03stranger in and just leave them with your kid, you know. So it's
- 5:05kind of the same with a dog. But then she walks like a dream
- 5:11on the leash. She's very very well on the leash, and she's a
- 5:14social betterflow overall, she's just very very sweet. She just likes to be
- 5:18outdoors, so she just would benefit from somebody who would want to do that
- 5:23as well. And you said she's around twenty three pounds, any indication that
- 5:27she'll have a how big she may get. I think she might fill out
- 5:33a little bit more. I don't necessarily think she'll get much bigger, but
- 5:41being that she is a year old, she could grow slightly, but probably
- 5:45not much where she does look like she's got some smaller breeds maybe in her.
- 5:47But she's very, very sweet, and she's probably going to be around
- 5:51twenty five twenty eight pounds maybe once she's like fully filled out and comfortable in
- 5:57a home and everything. So she's a good size dog, a good family
- 6:00dog too. I mean she well, she's a beautiful dog. And uh
- 6:04again, if you want to see her picture, you can go over to
- 6:08my social media pages and check out the picture. A beautiful, beautiful dog.
- 6:12But like you said, it's going to take somebody, if that's a
- 6:14little bit special, to give her the attention that she needs. But also,
- 6:17uh, an outdoors type person because obviously she she was like Springsteen,
- 6:21she was born to run. Uh. But if you but let me just
- 6:25say this, and this is this is what we call a davatorial on the
- 6:28show. This is where I, you know, kind of give my opinions
- 6:30on things. If you're going to get Hazel and you're going to chain her
- 6:33up, do not get her. I'll just go ahead and say that right
- 6:38now, because that's not a life for a dog. If if your only
- 6:41option, as much as we want to get Hazel ad optioned adopted, if
- 6:44your only option is to keep her tied up or chained up, then please
- 6:46leave her there. That's that. That's me speaking, that's not Hannah speaking,
- 6:50Just so you know. But Aave Islands showing five eighty lives Brye to
- 6:54you part by Bridge Valley. If you're interested in proving your company's I workforce
- 6:57may want to know. Bridge Valley offers custom taylor it training to bridge the

- 7:12Right I was checking out social media pages, Hannah. Always a lot
- 7:15of things going on but it looks like you're doing some hiring at the shelter.
- 7:17What exactly are you looking for? Yeah, so we are doing hiring.
- 7:21I believe it. It's for adoption counselor and then as well as someone
- 7:28for our animal care team. And that could be a wide range of being
- 7:31with the cat, being with the dogs, deep cleaning candles, you know,
- 7:34a bunch of stuff like just animal care, like you're just carrying the
- 7:38animals. And then the adoptions is going to be something that helps like support
- 7:44educate people for what all we know about the animals, kind of like how
- 7:48are come on here and tell you all about the animals? You kind of
- 7:50do the same thing as an adoption counselor and then you all adopt them out
- 7:56of course. But we are hiring I believe three to four new staff.
- 8:00So definitely, if you're interested, come on up an application and that's the
- 8:05process. They just come and see you in person and fill out the application.
- 8:09What not? There right, Yes, but I believe we started a
- 8:13new thing. I haven't quite yet looked at it myself, but there should
- 8:18be a spot to join our team on our website as well. Okay,
- 8:22you can fill out that online all right, very good, And do you
- 8:26need any kind of experience readther one of those jobs. It's always really good
- 8:31to have experience with dogs and cats. It's very good to already know a
- 8:35little bit about them. But I don't necessarily think that they need much experience.
- 8:41Just a love of animals would be about the own experience that you needs.
- 8:43What you're saying, right, yes, yes, and dedication and dedication
- 8:48and willing to work odd hours and willing to I mean, it's amazing.
- 8:52I mean to me what you folks do up there and all of our shelters
- 8:56like yours around the country to be able to do what it is you do.
- 8:58I mean, it's it's amazing to me. Now, you're always in
- 9:01need of donations of stuff that I always mentioned this last week. If you're
- 9:05doing some spring cleaning and you're planning on get rid of towels or blankets or
- 9:09anything like that, those items are always in need at the shelter. Hannah,
- 9:15Yes, yep, we definitely always need donations. Really, all donations
- 9:20are needed. Of course, we always need the blankets and towels. I'll
- 9:24say that every time, because we always need those. We are needing some
- 9:28laundry detergent as well as some food for the dogs. I believe, I
- 9:39believe. I think that's the things that I heard in the meeting that we
- 9:43have, so I'm not sure of anything else. But we do have a
- 9:46list of a couple of things that we need on our wish or not a
- 9:50couple, but we have a wish list of things on our website that you
- 9:52can definitely go through. We have an Amazon Amazon wish list as well as
- 9:56a Tree wish list, so you can go through. You can either pick
- 10:00things up and bring them to the shelter or just have them delivered. So
- 10:03there's definitely different options if you if you aren't closed. Yeah, and I
- 10:07say this a lot of the show, Hannah, it's it's this is people
- 10:11want to help out. I mean they say, well, I could never
- 10:15go there because I'd want to take all of them home, and that's probably
- 10:18where I am on that as well. But there's other ways that you can
- 10:20help out the animals without having to adopt them all and help and find them.
- 10:26And it's the donations. And again it's so easy. You get the
- 10:28Amazon whishliss, you can go to your local grocery store whatever, your local
- 10:33dollar store, whatever, and pick up some items and drop them off.
- 10:35I mean, as you said, detergent, towels, sheets, all that
- 10:39stuff is always needed up there. Finally, the planning is continuing, Hannah
- 10:43for Tuxes and Tails. It's covered up here, not in the very distant
- 10:50future, over Capital Market. This is your big black tie affair that you
- 10:52do, your big fundraiser of the year, and I know there's information some
- 10:56at least available on your social media pages and also on your website. Texas
- 11:01and Tails is always a big deal, Hannah. Yeah, we love Texas
- 11:03and Tails. It's definitely coming up soon. It's May fourth, I believe
- 11:09it's at five pm this year, So if you are interested, you can
- 11:13go to our Facebook page and we have a link that takes you to the
- 11:16Texas and Tails page, and we also have the link that takes you to
- 11:20the tickets and everything, so definitely go check that out. It'll be so
- 11:24worth It's very fun and you get to dress up or you can even just
- 11:28wear your Sunday best whatever you want to do it all right, Hannah,
- 11:31it is always a pleasure to talk to you, and we will talk to
- 11:35you again next week. Thanks a lot. Thank you had a gardener again
- 11:37from the Kennal Charles and you made association. Hazel is our dog this week.
- 11:41Hazel is one year old. She is already Spade vaccinated, microchip,
- 11:46all the stuff. Very very sweet. Girl loves to be around playful dogs.
- 11:52The only knock seems to be on Hazel is that she is an escape
- 11:56artist is the way that Tanna put it. And she was adopted before and
- 12:00they had a hard time kind of keeping her around the home place. So
- 12:03if you've got enough yard and you've got the time that she doesn't want to
- 12:09really necessarily be left alone. She likes to hang out with you. So
- 12:11if you've got the opportunity to do that, I know that they would love
- 12:15to talk to you about Hazel. She's around twenty three pounds, seems to
- 12:18love to be around another dogs. So there there's your dog right there.
- 12:22And again, if you want to see Hazel's picture, just go over to
- 12:26my Facebook page. It's Dave Allen Radio and Facebook where you can go to
- 12:28my Twitter or x page and take a look at Hazel. Let me see
- 12:33what we got here. Okay, I got a text here it says,
- 12:39yeah, actually I saw this city of Charleston is hiring an animal control officer
- 12:45and somebody sent me They texted me here the picture about that, and I
- 12:48actually saw that the other day. I think I may have shared it from
- 12:50the City of Charleston's Facebook page. They're looking for a part time animal control
- 12:56officer if you like more information about that, and again, all that information
- 12:58is available on the City of Charleston social media and also on their probably on
- 13:03their website as well. Phone calls of a Nave Island show service of Big

- 16:23Jason Quintrell, President and the CEO of Union Mission Joyce, Jason, good
- 16:27morning, welcome to the show. Good morning, thanks for having me.
- 16:30So the last time you were on a show, and I bet you didn't
- 16:34even know that I noticed this, but you were on a couple of months
- 16:37ago and someone, perhaps me, snapped a picture of you Jason behind the
- 16:42microphone and you changed it on your Facebook to your profile pick. Did sure?
- 16:48I did? So? Is this a way for you to tell me
- 16:51you want my job? Because there's days you can have it? Okay,
- 16:53Dave, I'm telling you there's no I do have a face for radio.
- 16:57Never heard that before, Bet you haven't. But there's no way that I
- 17:03want your job, Okay, there's no way. Just asking because I noticed
- 17:06that, I was like, change this profile picture to a picture here behind
- 17:08the microphone. Man, that's great pr for me. Though. You gotta
- 17:14realize you had somebody in the studio where it's Lisa pack Is with us women
- 17:18on a Mission. Lisa, good morning, welcome to the show. Good
- 17:21morning to be okay, we need you to definitely move into that microphone.
- 17:23You're kind of you're not like Jason and I. You're there, you got
- 17:26got experienced. Well, no, you're just not a loud mouth like Jason.
- 17:30That's what it is. So so Lisa, welcome to the show.
- 17:36What exactly is Women on a Mission? Women on a Mission is a luncheon
- 17:40that we have to benefit the Union Mission, but it honors women who consistently
- 17:45serve our community in a diverse group of ways. This year we have five
- 17:49women that were honoring. Okay, and how long has this this whole thing
- 17:52been going on. We started in twenty sixteen for four years, but then
- 17:57had to stop because of COVID twenty and are just getting started back. And
- 18:02so how are the women chosen for this? Well, we have a committee
- 18:04and we get names. It's that's probably the hardest part of this because there's
- 18:08so many women in Charleston, in our area that deserve this honor on their
- 18:14service. It's like the community service take community service. So there's like a
- 18:19process where people can can, like your committee just kind of weighs any sit
- 18:22down I can. I can see this happening. Everybody's sitting around a table
- 18:26with a legal pad saying, well, he she did this, and she
- 18:27did that or whatever. Yes, that's exactly how it happens. Okay,
- 18:30and so and you honor how many again? Five? Do we already know
- 18:33who they are? We do? Yeah? Are you at liberty to discuss
- 18:37that? Liberty discuss that? Right, would Jason? But Jason, you
- 18:41can go home, by the way. I'll see you guys later. Yeah,
- 18:42Lisa and I are bonding over here. Okay. So, so who
- 18:45are the women we're honoring this. I'll just tell you a little bit about
- 18:48each one of them. Teresa Brown is an amazing woman who is the volunteer
- 18:52director of the Second Avenue Center on the West Side, where the children go
- 18:57to from Mary c Know Elementary School. After school, they serve mills,
- 19:03help with homework. Teresa does so many things there. She's wonderful. She's
- 19:07like a second mom to these kids. Marjorie Cook does a huge variety of
- 19:14different things. She's been very active with the Youth Symphony, garden clubs in
- 19:18our area, the y Craik Patent House. She's involved in a ton of
- 19:25different things. In ourself. I know Marjorie very well. She's actually been
- 19:27on the show several times. Was wonderful, wonderful and works with the Vantage
- 19:30Valley. Yes, yeah, that's that's what that's what I've had her on
- 19:33with the Vantage Valley. Is fantastic person. Yeah, yeah, Marjorie's great.
- 19:37Donna Lucas is very involved in foster care in our area through Bible Center
- 19:41Church. She runs the Foster Closet and she has been a foster mom to
- 19:47thirty six children over the years. So she's great. Ellen Schlotnik is very
- 19:52active with Benet Jacob, the Girl Scouts and Ronald McDonald house and the wife.
- 19:57She's very very active in our community. And Angie Settle, I'm sure
- 20:02you know Angie's also been on the show. Who is the CEO of West
- 20:04Virginia Health, Right, Angie just goes above and beyond. Now, when
- 20:10is the actual event? It is May seventh, okay, from noon to
- 20:14one thirty at the Charleston Marriott at the Marriott, Okay, and tickets are
- 20:18available. They are we feed people dot Com and tickets are seventy five dollars.
- 20:26We do have sponsorships available that run from five thousand to two fifty and
- 20:30you are still looking for sponsors. All that's one of the reasons you probably
- 20:33wondered, why are we having this on so early. Well, that's the
- 20:34reason because we want to appeal to our business leaders or any other groups that
- 20:38would like to get involved with sponsorship. So if I decide to if not
- 20:42me, if Ryan, my producer, decides to sponsor this. So what
- 20:47exactly do you get for your sponsorship, Well, it depends on what level
- 20:49you can track at. Of course, our highest levels five thousand. We
- 20:53will promote you from our website, will promote you from the stage. We'll
- 20:56have a full page ad in the program, we go down to table sponsors
- 21:02who will list you in the program, and there's levels in between where we'll
- 21:06list your logo. We really really appreciate sponsors because we want them to join
- 21:12us in promoting the Union Mission as well as these ladies. All right,
- 21:17let's go down, Jason. I I am going to make some airtime for
- 21:18you just so you know, but you don't have to let me bring you
- 21:22in to talk about Union Mission and on your involvement in all this. Sure,
- 21:26So, Union Mission for one hundred and thirteen years has been about the
- 21:30community and serving the community. So it only it fits, you know,
- 21:34recognizing women that go over and above for our community. It just fits.
- 21:40It goes hand in hand to recognize these ladies and what they're doing. It's
- 21:45a great luncheon. It's a great I'm just gonna say, it's a great
- 21:48networking opportunity with a lot of people. It's a great opportunity to really see
- 21:53some new faces maybe that you haven't heard of before. It's I think food's
- 22:00great. It's at the Trust. Yes, and so this is one of
- 22:06my favorite events every year just for the simple fact of it's based on nothing
- 22:10but service for the people's that's good. The Dave alanceowing five eighty lives brought
- 22:15to you and parted by fresh Air. They'll change those heating and cooling unit
- 22:18air filters for you in your home, your retail establishment, your restaurant,
- 22:21your church, whatever, and they could build custom filters for you now for
- 22:25twenty five hour emergency service too. Visit fresh Air Filters dot US. That's
- 22:29fresh Air Filters dot US are called three zero four four four zero one one
- 22:33zero four for fresh air because everyone deserves fresh air. All right, So
- 22:37talk about union mission talk about some of the other things you got going on,
- 22:41Jason, Well, our recoveries are doing really, really well. I'm
- 22:45very excited about our recoveries. So some of the data that we that I'm
- 22:48kind of a data geek when it comes to the mission, and so Dave
- 22:56the twelve to fifteenth month long recovery, those that stay the twelve and fifteen
- 23:00months and graduate right now, we are at eighty percent success rate of five
- 23:06years. That's amazing. It is, I mean, it's unheard of in
- 23:11that business. I know a little bit about it, and that's unheard of.
- 23:15It goes hand in hand with what's going on with our Behavioral Health center,
- 23:18goes hand in hand. We are a faith based organization, so we
- 23:22provide Bible classes and understanding who Christ is. But we don't stop there.
- 23:26We want a holistic approach here in recovery. We deal with mind, body,
- 23:30and spirit. So we start working on the body with our wellness center
- 23:33good nutrition, we start working on the mind with our Behavioral Health Center,
- 23:37and we start working on the spirit in our classes. And it's pretty cool
- 23:42to see where these people end up after twelve fifteen months and then even after
- 23:47now, so how do people end up in your program, Jason. Are
- 23:51these people that have just come in and said, like, I've had enough
- 23:52of this lifestyle. I want Are their families get involved? I mean,
- 23:57how exactly does one end up in the program? Yes, yes, and
- 24:00yes. Actually it's where someone gets really you know, you hear rock Bottom,
- 24:07and somebody's got to realize that enough is enough. I'm going to either
- 24:10die or I'm going to end up in prison, and so it's time to
- 24:12make a change. They have to reach that point before they want recovery.
- 24:15You can't just make somebody go through recovery. So we take about forty percent
- 24:19of our clients out of the criminal justice system, and we take about sixty
- 24:23percent of referrals from family members and the community. I want to talk about
- 24:29that relationship with the criminal justice sure system because you know, we are in
- 24:34election mode season right now, and I've had a lot of candidates that have
- 24:37come on the show running for judge and running for magisters and things of that
- 24:41nature, and they all say, regardless of what their stance on anything else
- 24:45is is, they all point to the to the drug issue, and they
- 24:48all point to mental health issues, and they all go kind of kind of
- 24:52hand in hand, What is your relationship with Union mission, like with the
- 24:56judicial system here in the Kanawh Valley. It's good, It's really good.
- 25:00I mean it has I'll be honest and a little transparent. It always hasn't
- 25:03been that way, but in the past five seven years we have done a
- 25:08really good job bridging some gaps, starting to operate on a very high level
- 25:15professional level, especially with our behavioral health center, and people are recognizing that
- 25:19and recognizing the work that we are doing in the community and recovery. And
- 25:23we're building really good relationships within the criminal justice system with pos with judges.
- 25:30My recovery director would she spends all of her time doing that. I don't
- 25:33really get involved in that too much, but yeah, networking has been very
- 25:40high on the priority list the past four or five years. So we're making
- 25:44those necessary relationships and getting those people within recovery and off the streets. Are
- 25:49we are we making any headway in this thing? I mean overall? I
- 25:53mean, I know that's a very difficult question, Jason, but are we
- 25:57are we finally getting somewhere? Dave eighty percent relapse right in the country.
- 26:06You got to face the facts. We're going to continue to fight. But
- 26:11I can't look at you and say that we are absolutely on top of this
- 26:18and knocking the ball out of the park. Yeah, I mean, it's
- 26:19it's like anything else. And I have no training in this sort of thing
- 26:22whatsoever. Just what I've witnessed, uh is you got to want it.
- 26:26And and sometimes people that enter these programs may not necessarily have reached that as
- 26:32you said that rock Bottom, Jason. They may not actually be there yet,
- 26:37or maybe they're there just trying to keep theirselves out of the criminal justice
- 26:40system or whatever. They may not be there for one percent for the right
- 26:44reasons. I see that all the time, and you know, you know
- 26:47that it's a lot easier to be in our recovery than in prison, right.
- 26:52But I've also seen that happen with the same person three and four and
- 26:56five times, and then finally they get to the point where I can't do
- 27:00this anymore, I can't live this. And so now we're able to see
- 27:03them successful because they've finally made that conscious decision that enough's enough. I have
- 27:07told this story on the air many many times. I have a good friend
- 27:11from my hometown and I grew up together, went the high school together,
- 27:14it's a year behind me in school, the good kid in the neighborhood.
- 27:18When on Saturday nights as a teenager, when we were out, the rest
- 27:22of the guys were out doing what we're not supposed to do and trying to
- 27:26get beer and all this other stuff as high school kids do. I never
- 27:32did that. He was I'm gonna keep going now. He was the one
- 27:36that was always, now, we don't need to do that, we don't
- 27:38need to do that. He was probably right, but after high school he's
- 27:44the one that got the what was then that's the time the pill problem because
- 27:48he was injured, was prescribed vikoing something like that, and it began a
- 27:53road for him that was well over twenty five years or so into twenty last
- 28:00time I talked to him, and he, thankfully, he's doing well.
- 28:03Now. He's a twenty to twenty five different treatment centers across the country,
- 28:07going out of the country, going you know, in the country, the
- 28:11tough love kind of thing, the country club kind of thing. He did
- 28:14it all, went through twenty to twenty five of them, and he's finally
- 28:17at age fifty two, doing well clean. And I say all that to
- 28:22say this is for some folks. It is a long, long road.
- 28:26It is, man, it really is. And I mean it's when I
- 28:30first got it, got with Union mission, I didn't have a good understanding
- 28:34of what people went through in recovery. I would get very upset. You
- 28:38know, why don't you just stop, why don't you just get out of
- 28:41it? I mean, I mean, stop stealing, stop putting a needle
- 28:45in your arm. But and it didn't take long till I figured out,
- 28:49Man, it's a process of sometimes they're doing that just to not be sick,
- 28:55be dope sick. And so that drive and it was all. It
- 29:00was also explained to me that if I hold my breath long enough in that
- 29:03desire for my body to get air is the same desire or more that they
- 29:08got to have that dopamine fix. And that's what leads to going back to
- 29:14the criminal justices, and that's what leads to your lawnmowers getting sole one,
- 29:17and that's what leads to you know, all this sort of stuff. But
- 29:19Dave Allen showing five any line bright to you a part about General Hardware of
- 29:22Windfield and Milton and General Lumber of Windfield, whether you're getting your home ready
- 29:26for the warm weather months. We've got a project that you're working on.
- 29:30Deal locally, deal with these local folks over here, General Hardware, General
- 29:33Lumber, visit General Hardware, WV dot com least. So let's go back
- 29:36to you and let's talk about the luncheon again. That's in a month of
- 29:38May. What was the date again, May seventh, over at the Marriott
- 29:42and tickets are available on the website again, hit that for us again.
- 29:47We feed people dot com real, real easy. And that's we spent some
- 29:52time here talking about this luncheon and Jason I kind of went off on a
- 29:55tangent talking about the recovery aspect. But Union Mission does so many different things,
- 30:00correct, from preschool to homelessness, to recovery to feeding thousands. Yeah,
- 30:04it's quite a broad stroke, all right. And this luncheon again is
- 30:10going to be in the month of mayor with the Mary. I want to
- 30:11urge everybody to go. And I know I've got a lot of business people
- 30:15listen to this show. They need your help, they need your sponsorship.

- 34:23want to? Yes? They are. I asked Jason that just before he
- 34:27left. Yes they are. He said. It wasn't always that way with
- 34:30this program, that they had to attend a certain church, but now they
- 34:32can. They're free to go to any church they want to, according to
- 34:37a according to Jason, actually, hey, Ben Solang goes here. Hey
- 34:40man, Hey, thanks for having me on, mister commission. Good morning,
- 34:44Happy Friday. Good morning, Yes, happy Friday. You a NCAA
- 34:46tournament guy. You know this is the first year that I have not filled
- 34:51out a bracket. Yeah, it just kind of snuck up on me.
- 34:53But I did watch the game last night the UK who was at the beat
- 34:57UK Oakland Oakland. Yeah, that was a great Yeah. And I am
- 35:00not a huge basketball fan, to be honest with you, and I did
- 35:04not fill out a bracket, but I know and I got a lot of
- 35:07fans, especially being from the part of the world that I'm originally from,
- 35:09that are UK fans. Any any jobs available for coach Caliperi right now?
- 35:15Kanaw County. Anything that you got a slot for him over. I'm sure
- 35:17we can find something. We could probably get him over at the Shawnee teaching
- 35:21some basketball. Well, I don't know. Maybe I tell you there's a
- 35:25I got it. There's a friend of mine and I'll say this to move
- 35:29on as a friend of mine on social media who lives in Kentucky and she
- 35:31posted this morning, she said Happy Friday to everybody except coach Caliperi. Oh,
- 35:37poor guy. So he's uh, he's had a he's had a rough,
- 35:40rough, rough day. Yeah, that was an incredible game. Then.
- 35:44Uh so yesterday evening a public meeting Commissioner was held to discuss and to
- 35:46get input about the opioid settlement money coming to Kanawa County something like seven million
- 35:52dollars or so. I had Commissioner Wheeler, the president of the commission on
- 35:55yesterday to talk about So I thought i'd have you on his kind of he
- 35:58did the preview, you do the review. How was the turnout last night
- 36:00of what did the commissioners learn? So we had we had a good turnout.
- 36:04We had. You know what we're doing now on April one, We're
- 36:07going to launch an online application, very similar to what we did with the
- 36:10ARP funding, and so preference will be given to those programs that are already
- 36:15established. I mean, we have seven million dollars that's going to come in
- 36:19over ten years, so that's not going to be a lot of money when
- 36:22you look at you know, the devastation that the OPLOIDS is called, particularly
- 36:25here in Kenwall County. And so we're going to have an online application process.
- 36:30You go in, you submit the application, you kind of indicate what
- 36:34the money is going to be used for. There is a two hundred fifty
- 36:37thousand dollars cap that we're going to impose because everybody's going to come in and
- 36:40want all seven million, right, we don't have the seven million, Yep,
- 36:45We've got around two point nine million. So that's what we're doing.
- 36:47We're going to go ahead and open up the online application. Everything that is
- 36:52submitted, much like our ARP money will be vetted. We'll have an accountant
- 36:54look at it. We'll have a lawyer, Caleb David look at it to
- 36:59make sure that it is is within the guidelines that we're established by the What's
- 37:02in your First Foundation and we'll start making sure that that money gets out to
- 37:07the public to put it to use, and those applications will be available online.
- 37:13So if I fill out an application with something for an organization I'm involved
- 37:16with or whatever, other people can see that, right everybody. Much like
- 37:21the ARP. I mean, we you know, we receive some RP applications
- 37:23that you know, and we posted on there that it's going to be public,
- 37:28but I'm not sure people understood that it was going to be public and
- 37:30so that but that's the way this is going to be. It is public.
- 37:32It is public if you if you submit it, it's going to be
- 37:36available for review. And then every vote that we take. You know,
- 37:40there's not going to be any executive sessions, no back room meetings. Everything
- 37:44that we do, every dollar that we spend is going to be done in
- 37:46a public meeting so that people know exactly where that money's going. But Dave
- 37:50alan Chow and five eighty Live is brought to you part by Pinnacle Consultants,

- 38:07quality. Visit Pinnacle Corp dot net because what you don't know can hurt you.
- 38:12And as we explained yesterday with Commission President Wheeler Ben, this money has
- 38:17to go for something to do with opioids, you know, be an education,
- 38:22be a resource officer, facilities, something like that. So this money
- 38:27cannot unfortunately, we cannot use it to pave your alley. Right, Yeah,
- 38:30that's important. I mean it's not really it's not an infrastructure grant.
- 38:34It's not money that we received kind of like the ARP. We could use
- 38:37it for infrastructure, tourism, water projects. It was a little broader,
- 38:40I think than this money. This really has to go to abate or somehow
- 38:46help with the opioid or drug crisis. And so that's what it'll be used
- 38:52for. And we've got to make sure because look, if we screwed that
- 38:54up, we got to pay it back. Yeah. Last thing you want
- 38:57to do is hand out money and then end up having to pay it back.
- 39:00You know, that would be uh, that would not be not be
- 39:02good. That sounds familiar, It sounds vaguely familiar uh Tex says, can
- 39:10little leagues apply for the money? You can apply. I'd be shocked if
- 39:15you get it. Yeah, well, I mean let's just be honest about
- 39:17it here, because I mean unless you what, could you somehow skew that
- 39:22to you know, I'd be shocked. I think that was call them they
- 39:25just say no to drugs, tigers or something like that. Probably not.
- 39:30I think they'd probably see through that. I think it really has to go
- 39:34for you know, substance abuse help. You know, we've got other pockets
- 39:39of money for little leagues that are in trouble, and we get a lot
- 39:44of those requests. I mean, we helped out the Little League up in
- 39:46Camel's Creek last night. You know, they had that they've been flooded and
- 39:51their concession stand has been broken into. We've helped them a lot. And
- 39:53then last night they had a mower that was in the August of twenty twenty
- 39:58three flood that they been trying to use and it sometimes worked and sometimes didn't
- 40:02work. So we were able to help them out with cole severance money to
- 40:07get them a new zero turn mow or so they can mow the fields.
- 40:09You know, anytime that I ever have any of the three County commissioners on
- 40:13the show, I invariably get a text from somebody, and you know,
- 40:15I don't know where the text are coming from, but a text to somebody
- 40:19that thanks the County Commission for what you've done on Campbell's Creek. And they
- 40:22always say the state didn't do anything following flooding. And I don't know whether
- 40:27it's true or not. That's just whether it's true. Okay, Okay,
- 40:30Well, I'm just reading what they say. But they always, whoever this
- 40:32person is, always wants to give praise to the Canawa County Commission for what
- 40:37you folks did. Well. We certainly appreciate that. We got to keep
- 40:39in mind too, you know, the state helped a lot. Governor Justice
- 40:43actually came out and toured, and I remember it was in the August of
- 40:45twenty three flood or the one before that he came out and toured. We
- 40:49had the Department of Highways came out and really helped a lot. We had
- 40:52a lot of the businesses up there that helped. So Center of Mansion was
- 40:57on site after the not the twenty three ff love with the one before,
- 41:00and so we really had a good partnership with the state and federal delegation that
- 41:06came out and really pitched in to help. They just get I mean,
- 41:09it's just such a it's the area has just been hit so hard with the
- 41:13decline of coal and with flooding and you name it, and it's happening.
- 41:15And we've tried to really direct the coal severance money in that direction in the
- 41:22africanalv Valley, and I think we're doing a lot better job now making sure
- 41:25that that money goes back into the community that actually produced it. The commissioner,
- 41:29what can we do? It seems like every time that we have a
- 41:32weather emergency situation like that, and I know that Jeff Jenkins is very familiar
- 41:38with that areas from that area and he gets out and he reports on it
- 41:40seems like it's always the same areas that we're always talking about. We're always
- 41:44talking about Campbells Creek, We're alway talking about Wichard Creek in all these different
- 41:46places. What overall can be can we do? You know, you can't
- 41:52anything about Mother Nature, but there's obviously some other issues. Yeah, So
- 41:55let me let me point out first of all, another issue that came up
- 41:59with the kind of Commissioner last night was the SBA loans. The US government
- 42:02down SBA loans that are interest free for the first year, so it's and
- 42:07it's for disaster relief. That deadline's April one, so if you're looking for
- 42:12I think it's four percent after the first year in that range. So if
- 42:15you need help, you've got a business that was flooded, if you have
- 42:17I think it even works for homes if you've got issues from the flood.
- 42:22There's actually a federal SBA loan that's interest free for the first year that you
- 42:27can get to help remedy because you know a lot of people don't have insurance
- 42:30and sometimes the insurance company just deny coverage for whatever reason. So you know,
- 42:35make sure I want people to know that that's available. The deadline's coming
- 42:38up Apri one. Now back to the other issue. One of the things
- 42:42that we're doing up there. You know, when the creeks get clogged up,
- 42:45that produces a lot of flooding. So we've got kind of white cleanups
- 42:50that are going on. We do those several times per year where you're going
- 42:53to be coming up here, yeah, yeah, coming up soon. We've
- 42:55got you know, pulling tires out of creeks. We're making sure that we're
- 43:00trying to open those things up. We try to be as responsive as possible,
- 43:05you know, when when we get a significant rainfall, to try to
- 43:08help people out, you know. But but ultimately that's been going on for
- 43:13many, many years, and it's just it's the it's the location. You
- 43:19know. We can try to do everything we possibly can, but it doesn't
- 43:21mean it's going to fix it, all right, Tex says. Commissioner Wheeler's
- 43:23take on the current water health of Paint Creek was much more optimistic than Commissioner
- 43:29Selango's. I wouldn't need a fish out of their statement a couple of months
- 43:31back, it's now is it now cleaner? And would Commissioner Selango now eat
- 43:36a Pink Creek trout? Did you hear the show yesterday with Wheeler? Okay,
- 43:39well, let me go back the text that was yesterday and I read
- 43:44this and Lance answered it. It said, can you check with Commissioner Wheeler
- 43:47about the state? Okay? We lost everything? Okay, we good?
- 43:52Now all right? It said, Dave, can you check with the Commissioner
- 43:54Wheeler about the status of the chemicals spilled in Pink Creek Commissioner Selango said your
- 44:00show recently that it was unsafety fish there. Yet the state has been stocking
- 44:02trout there since the fall. A lot of folks are eating them and don't
- 44:06know better. I asked Lance about that yesterday and he said it's safe.
- 44:09So this follow up text from the same person says, would you eat a
- 44:15fish? Would you eat a paint? Creekd trout Commissioner. At first,
- 44:17I don't remember saying that the fish and paint were unsafe. I mean,
- 44:21I think if they're living there again, they're probably okay. So yeah,
- 44:25I do it. In fact, I want to go catch one. I'll
- 44:28fillay it right down the spot, all right now, I mean not sushi
- 44:30style. I'm going to cook it, okay. Promo by the way,
- 44:34Ryan, there's some good stuff for future promo there, all right. So
- 44:37Tex says, couldn't the money just be placed into an account to draw interest
- 44:42and let it increase and use it to build a larger, more advanced recovery
- 44:45and education facility. Well, there are certain guidelines on when you can use
- 44:47the money. Now, there are times and there's time frames there, you
- 44:51know. So with the Capital Sports Center, we actually put some of our
- 44:54some of that money into a money market account that's getting around five percent.
- 45:00We've got other county money and money money markets account accounts that are getting you
- 45:05know, in Shawnee Foundation, we just put that money into a money market
- 45:07account. So yeah, that's a that's a good idea. You just have
- 45:12to spend it by a certain timeframe, you know, the ARP money,
- 45:15we had to have it committed by the end of twenty five and spent I
- 45:16think by the end of twenty six. And uh, but that money is
- 45:22earning interest, so we we've actually we get a lot of money on interest,
- 45:24you know, on those when we get some of that federal money coming
- 45:28in, we're able to put that in money market That right now is pretty
- 45:32good. I mean, maybe not compared to what was in the seventies and
- 45:36eighties, but it's pretty good right now. I mean, I got a
- 45:38couple quick texts and we've got to go to break and get you out of
- 45:40here. Text says could that going back to a little league text, the
- 45:44goal would be to use money for education. When they ask about little leagues
- 45:47like to use it for education. Yeah, and uh, you know,
- 45:51how are you gonna how you're gonna implement that. I mean, does the
- 45:53coach have to start every practice or every game talking about opioids to six year
- 45:59old kids. I'm not sure sure that that's the best use of the money.
- 46:02I think we have other moneies available for a little leagues when they need
- 46:06help. I think this really needs to go out to you know, those
- 46:10folks that are on the front lines fighting there. All right, final text,
- 46:15and we'll go, h can we get the trash picked up along sixty?
- 46:19On Route sixty? Many of them use it for tourism. Can we
- 46:22can we get get out there? Yeah, after you're done fishing, can
- 46:25you go pick up Yeah, I'll catch it. I just need to know
- 46:29where it is. So if they call the Kanawk County Commission and let us
- 46:31know where it is on Route sixty, that's a pretty big stretch of land.
- 46:34Give us an idea of the problem. You know. I get those
- 46:37calls quite a bit and we respond. I mean, I'll have somebody out
- 46:40there in twenty four hours. You tell them where it is. All right,
- 46:43there you go. It's the eastern part of Kanak County. It's like
- 46:45it's like this is an ongoing conversation here. They said to eastern part of
- 46:49call the County Commission. Give the number again. Ben three five seven zero
- 46:52one zero zero. I hope that's not my secretary. Call that number.
- 46:57Call that number and it'll gets you, he says. An he said within
- 47:00twenty four hours. That's what he said. H right, hiright, commissioner.
- 47:02Overdue for a break, gotta go. Thanks as always for being here,

- 49:49Got some information here from the Cannaw County Commission. The number that Commissioner Slango
- 49:54mentioned being ben Selango. He gave the wrong number. Actually he was our
- 50:00number. But it's a better number to call, according to the folks at
- 50:01the County Commission. Three zero four three five seven zero one zero one.
- 50:07So thought this has reference to with somebody sent a texting mister Solango asking about
- 50:13doing some clean up on Route sixty of the eastern part of Canawk County.
- 50:15He gave out a number not the best number to call. What he gave
- 50:19out the correct number is. It was the right number. It's just not
- 50:22the best one to call. This one is the better one. Three zero
- 50:25four, three five seven zero one zero one. But Dave Allen showing five
