- 0:04Welcome to the Duckfellas Podcast, your weekly dose of waterfall wisdom,
- 0:09blind banter, and hunting stories that might just be mostly true,
- 0:14hosted by Tyler, Cade, and I guess Austin.
- 0:21Free fellas, chasing feathers, and good times. Do us a favor and hit that like
- 0:26button or subscribe wherever you're listening in at today.
- 0:35Oh there he is we're back there he is you got him on the stage this time good job yes,
- 0:43so glad we could make it here again this week beer crack and all i like it yeah
- 0:48that was pretty loud can you keep that toned down a little bit i'm sorry i'll
- 0:52get better i promise you won't just I still haven't gotten better.
- 0:55He's gotten better. He hasn't gotten better. Yeah, no, that's a fact.
- 1:01Well, I would say hunting this week was pretty dismal at best.
- 1:06I don't think I went, but a few times.
- 1:09Did you go at all? You went the first couple days of the week, didn't you? Yeah.
- 1:14Yeah, just like the, actually just the first day.
- 1:18Oh, we talked about that on our podcast. We didn't do that until Tuesday last
- 1:21week, right? Right, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:23Yeah, so I mean, I went hunting, I know for sure I went Thursday.
- 1:28Was that Thursday I went or Friday?
- 1:31I think it was Friday. With me and New York. Friday, yeah.
- 1:35But, eh, that sucked. We spent most of the hunt in our truck because there was
- 1:40nothing flying, and it was not worth being outside the cold form.
- 1:46That's all right. Some of us were at work.
- 1:49Work, work. Yeah. Can relate to that. Yeah.
- 1:52What is that? That's right. Unfortunately, neither of our wives won the lottery,
- 1:57so we had to go back to work this week. Yep.
- 2:00Dang. That sucks. It's unfortunate, really. And you got old money bags over
- 2:05here that just doesn't have to work. Yeah.
- 2:07Must be nice. See, I haven't been working, so I have zero money,
- 2:10actually. That's the joke's on you guys. Negative money.
- 2:13The bank's going to be knocking on my door sooner than later.
- 2:16You couldn't get that lucky. I know. Hopefully, they take Ellie first.
- 2:21What'd she ever do to you? Looked at me wrong. Have you ever hung out with that
- 2:25dog? Yeah, she's cool. She snuggles with me, just not you.
- 2:29Fair enough. New Year's. I mean, we did have a holiday this week. Sure did.
- 2:35Tookie didn't. Yeah, no, Pookie stayed home like a freaking loser.
- 2:40Yeah, you know, some of us don't have that luxury and we still have to work.
- 2:46You could still go out for a little bit and hang out with your friend.
- 2:49That is a pretty piss poor excuse, I will say.
- 2:51Yeah, you're right, I could, but I have bad self-control, so I decided to just
- 2:57stay home instead of hating my life at 4 o'clock in the morning when I had to wake up for work.
- 3:02That is a very good reason. I will give you that.
- 3:06Yeah. I don't necessarily know, I guess, if it's my self-control or if it's
- 3:11you guys just being shitty friends, honestly.
- 3:13I would go more with us being shitty friends. Yeah, for sure.
- 3:20I mean, we did stay out a lot later than I had originally planned on.
- 3:24Yeah, same, same. It happens like that every single time.
- 3:29Especially at that house. It's just like a magnet for early mornings.
- 3:33Well, dude, they were still partying when I woke up in the morning. Yeah.
- 3:38Yeah, that will happen. Yeah. Oh, thank you. Yeah. We see the sunrise from time to time.
- 3:43I'm dumb enough to do it, but usually in the summertime.
- 3:46I think we left around the same time. 1 or 1.30. Yeah, something like that.
- 3:52It was plenty late enough. Yeah, I got up in the morning and went scouting for
- 3:56geese. Shouldn't have done that because I ended up getting my truck stuck.
- 4:00Yeah, you did. Ended up having to get Kate off the couch finally and come get me unstuck.
- 4:06Got my nice clean truck all muddy. It's clean again. It looks good.
- 4:10There's still mud falling off of it. Is there?
- 4:14I just washed that rental yesterday, finally. And it was, it was been wobbling the whole time.
- 4:20Yeah. Driving down the interstate, dude, there was mud flying everywhere.
- 4:25Well, I mean, I guess we might as well go ahead and get into this week's shenanigans and topics.
- 4:30We'll let Pookie lead us into the topics of the week.
- 4:35Bringing to you guys this week, we have brands and styles.
- 4:38Can you get a little more cheerful with that? Don't just... It's not like you're being... My bad.
- 4:42No, sure. Sorry, guys. Come on, guy. Really happy to be here.
- 4:45Love all of you guys that are watching us.
- 4:49Brands and styles of calls, types of boats and motors, and Gooth Wars.
- 4:56See, that was a little better. I mean, well, it's a work in progress.
- 4:59Yeah, it's still going to need more Razzle.
- 5:01Like when you pull over a car that has like 5% windows, we need that level of energy.
- 5:07Dude, this morning when I passed him this morning. That's something that can't be replicated.
- 5:13You just got to have an imagination. I know that requires a brain, but still.
- 5:19We don't have a lot of that sitting right here. No. Not a lot.
- 5:22None, actually. I do negative.
- 5:26All right. popular brands of
- 5:29duck calls what do you guys use Cade I got
- 5:32a jargon and I have a foils I know
- 5:35Tyler's a big foils guy always have been
- 5:37sound good you're new to that jargon too this year
- 5:40right this is your first full season with it no I had one should I have one
- 5:45for four or five years but I made the mistake of going out and doing some some
- 5:50decoy photography in the spring and I took my little duck call with me and didn't
- 5:54take my whole lanyard and it fell out of my pocket somewhere and never found it.
- 6:00That first one sounded better, though. I don't know what the scoop is with this
- 6:03one, but that first one definitely sounded night and day better.
- 6:07You're talking about the Jorgons? Jargon. Jargon.
- 6:11Yeah, I'm with you on the foils. Always use his calls since I was a kid, pretty much.
- 6:16I mean, it was hard to beat that Buck Gardner Double Nasty 2 back in the day,
- 6:21though. Oh, yeah. That $20 call at Walmart.
- 6:23Oh, yeah. I mean, you could rip on those things pretty well. Yeah.
- 6:26They sounded good. But, I mean, it was still a $20 call. It would definitely
- 6:31get stuck or freeze up really easy.
- 6:35And that's one thing I very rarely have a problem with. Unless it's freezing,
- 6:39my foils never stick. yeah very rare unless they're super dirty and I haven't
- 6:43cleaned them in a while that does happen.
- 6:46Are you guys the type of guys that will run two different calls,
- 6:51like using two different calls, like during a hunt or like once you get one
- 6:56figured out, are you pretty comfortable with it and just staying with it?
- 7:00I know obviously you guys much more
- 7:03than me like have called for a lot longer have
- 7:06a lot more experience and it have a lot more range in
- 7:09your calling so maybe where a newer caller would
- 7:13need two separate calls to maybe
- 7:17have that range where you guys don't have to
- 7:19I guess I would say it has a lot to do with what you're hunting I mean but I
- 7:25don't I generally would say yeah I always like to have two calls one that's
- 7:29more loud crisp and just get after them when they're way up way far away or
- 7:34way high whatever and then I want one that's a little softer and sweeter that I can,
- 7:38when I'm trying to finish birds I can switch to that call and get them down
- 7:41in there when I could do the same thing with my open water call I do that all
- 7:44the time but when I do remember I'll grab my other call on the lanyard and finish
- 7:49them with that one because it's just it's a little bit softer not as loud and
- 7:53it's more friendly when they're closer so what what are those calls for you like Like,
- 7:57what is that hail call that you're using?
- 8:01I think my dead meat is the one I use to scream at them, get their attention,
- 8:06try and get them to break down and come to us.
- 8:09And then I think I have a timber rattler. And I use all single reeds.
- 8:13I don't, I don't, I'm not a particular fan of the double reads as much,
- 8:16but they're a little bit easier to blow.
- 8:18I think for beginners, I do think a double read is something that can help a
- 8:22beginner learn how to blow a duck call and get the basics down.
- 8:25And then you can step to a single read and play with it. Cause it's way easier
- 8:29to do a single read than a double read.
- 8:30And once you know how to blow it, you can get a lot more duck out of a single
- 8:34read than a double read. You're kind of limited with a double read. I feel like.
- 8:37Yeah. Yeah. I don't think doing like that bouncing hand and some stuff like
- 8:41that is definitely a challenge on a double read. to make it sound good too.
- 8:44Yeah, they just typically don't have as much like that squeak that you can get
- 8:48out of a single read. No, it's too stiff between the two reads I think.
- 8:51Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are calls that you can do that.
- 8:55I'm sure there's plenty of guys out there that can do it very easily,
- 8:57just I'm not that caliber caller. I'd still rather just blow a single read and do it all myself.
- 9:02Not let the reads dictate how my call sounds.
- 9:05Yeah, I don't want to be limited when it comes to that. I want to be able to
- 9:08have full range of however I need to call at the bird at the time.
- 9:11Right, right. And double reeds tend to stick a lot easier, I think.
- 9:15They do. They definitely do. They freeze up so much quicker.
- 9:18You get the spit in between them and they start sounding like shit.
- 9:21I don't know about you, but I blow a lot of spit through my call and it's really annoying.
- 9:26I typically don't unless it's really cold out and it just condenses all the air you blow into it.
- 9:32Then it's like a freaking geyser flowing out of there.
- 9:39Acrylic, poly, or wood? What's your guys' go-to?
- 9:43My go-to is an acrylic same now if i'm
- 9:46just gonna have like i'm just a laid-back relaxed hunt or i don't really care
- 9:50how we do i would i do like the sound of a wood wooden call like yeah an old
- 9:54cocobola duck call is hard to beat for the that sound but you cannot get near
- 10:00as loud on a wood call as you can on an acrylic no even hollow yeah,
- 10:06Poly works pretty good for a lot of scenarios, too. I mean, they're way cheaper
- 10:10calls. That's where you get your $20 or $40.
- 10:12I mean, anywhere from $20 to, I'd say, $60 range is your polycarb range.
- 10:16And then your acrylics, you're not going to find a good acrylic call for less than $80.
- 10:20I'd even go to venture less than $100. Yeah.
- 10:25Especially now, with the way everything's trending, I would agree with that.
- 10:28Yeah. Nowadays, you're looking at $140 for a duck call compared to what it used to be like.
- 10:33I mean, the average price used to be probably $80 a call. Yeah.
- 10:36For a duck, and then goose was like 100 to 120.
- 10:39How many calls are you guys running on your lanyards? What's the setup look
- 10:43like? Too many. I typically have four. Two duck, two goose.
- 10:48I have, right now I have three duck, one goose, and one speckle belly.
- 10:53And I need to get rid of one of the duck calls because I cannot get the thing
- 10:55to sound right. You need to get rid of that speckle belly call.
- 10:59Excuse me, do you know how to blow a speckle belly call? I don't know how to
- 11:02blow a regular goose call. Does anybody else have a speckle belly call? No.
- 11:07Oh, okay. How many, how many specs have we killed in Iowa this year?
- 11:10We hardly ever killed specs in Iowa, but I've killed a lot of specs with that call.
- 11:14Fake news. Were you with him? Because I haven't been.
- 11:18The one, the one that we shot this year, we didn't have to call out.
- 11:21It was already on top of the boat. He was doing it.
- 11:24He saw his friends and he wanted to party. We didn't even have any spec decoys
- 11:28out. I don't think it was all the decoys. I don't think so.
- 11:31Yeah. It was definitely like your six Canada floaters. and we didn't even have
- 11:35that many ducks out that day.
- 11:37No, we did not. What did we have? Like maybe a third of the little boat?
- 11:42We didn't have very many.
- 11:44No, we had maybe like five dozen acres out, I think, at best. Yeah.
- 11:47Thank God, because we had to brush all the snow off and all that stupid shit.
- 11:52All the slush. We do have a comment here asking about what the best zone to hunt in Iowa is.
- 11:58I mean, it really depends on the time of year, I feel like, for that.
- 12:01Me, personally, we hunt primarily the central zone, but I do play in the south
- 12:07zone. I don't ever really go to the north zone ever. I don't.
- 12:11I've never hunted the north zone, and primarily when I hunt the south zone,
- 12:15it's for geese, and I hate geese.
- 12:19So. You just hate what geese do to you. Yeah, no, no, no, absolutely.
- 12:23We're, I would say we're just really fortunate about what we have in the central
- 12:27zone and the amount of area that we have to hunt for ducks.
- 12:33Well, we've got the biggest bodies of water to hunt.
- 12:35Right. in the central zone, other than, you know, the Mississippi River that
- 12:38runs through all three zones, and you have the Missouri River that runs just in the south zone.
- 12:42That's, the Missouri River can be a lot of fun to hunt in the south zone,
- 12:46and then Mississippi River can be very fun to hunt too, if you hit it right.
- 12:51Obviously, it's not what it used to be, and it's not, it's not consistently
- 12:55good anymore like it used to be. It's crazy how that's changed through the years.
- 12:59We did have a couple guys from around here, though, that did go down there and
- 13:03mash them up later on in the season.
- 13:06And it looked like a good time. They shot quite a mixed, quite a mixed bag of stuff.
- 13:12So that was kind of cool to see that. Yeah, a bunch of losers.
- 13:16The other thing with Central Zone too, you got to think about the cities that we have in it.
- 13:20Like those always hold geese because they think they're safe and then they're lovely little, you,
- 13:25district ponds get all froze up and they're like, oh shit, we got to go somewhere else now.
- 13:29I mean, I think almost all the major cities in Iowa that have a whole,
- 13:33I'd say, 75% of Iowa's goose population is in the central zone.
- 13:36So I would feel like if we had to pick a zone that's probably the best to hunt
- 13:40right now, I would say central zone is probably your best zone to hunt.
- 13:43For sure. Unfortunately.
- 13:46Hopefully that changes soon. On the rate that we've been going,
- 13:49I don't think there's a good goose zone in Iowa.
- 13:51Not for us. We suck at killing geoses. Yeah, no kidding.
- 13:55We can get back on topic here. I just figured we'd touch that while I noticed it.
- 14:02I'm kind of looking at our notes here, and we got cutdowns versus J-frames.
- 14:08Do you guys even carry any cutdowns on your lanyards? Either of you?
- 14:12I don't. I've never even blown one.
- 14:15You've never blown a cutdown call? No. They're a lot of fun to call it with.
- 14:20They're so loud. Yeah, they're loud, but you can also get Pretty sweet on them,
- 14:25too. I mean, that's what a lot of the guys use down south in the timber.
- 14:28So they're not too, too loud where you can't use them in a timber because obviously
- 14:32everybody down there uses a cut-down call, basically.
- 14:35Right, no, but if you want them to be loud, like, you can rip.
- 14:38Or you can rip them, yeah.
- 14:40I think a cut-down has the best range out of any call there is.
- 14:46But I just don't ever use a cut-down call. You gotta see that.
- 14:53Oh, damn. Zach's coming at you right to the heart. But he's not wrong.
- 14:58You can pull that up on the live, too.
- 14:59I'm pretty sure we don't know how. Yeah, no, we can do it. Oh,
- 15:01there it is. Whoop, there it is.
- 15:05Zach just thinks I blow everything. That's actually his job.
- 15:08That's why he gets invited. Yeah, no, that's the only reason he gets invited. Yeah, facts.
- 15:14Oh, damn, Trace is even roasting me now, too. Oh, my gosh. No,
- 15:17the acorn cow guys are here. They're back.
- 15:21They're back. We are cooked. I think the poll they put up was very biased.
- 15:25I don't think there was enough duck hunters that seen that post.
- 15:28I don't think so either. Yeah.
- 15:29No. And that really did come from like just that short conversation and that
- 15:34podcast we had with them.
- 15:35And I think if we were, were more specific and what band of duck you shot,
- 15:41like, I think those numbers would have varied a little bit. I thought we actually did all right.
- 15:45And that poll for like primarily being a bunch of, against a bunch of deer hunters only. Yeah.
- 15:52Government goats.
- 15:55High fenced deer. They got to give themselves the little timber tug.
- 15:59Yeah. They're good to go. Swinging around in their tree.
- 16:04Wow. Now we got both Embraer brothers in here. Oh, shit.
- 16:11Well, let's go. Let's keep rolling along here. What we got next?
- 16:14Goose calls? Yeah. Yeah. Just rolling right into goose calls.
- 16:18I mean, it's pretty much the same exact questions with goose calls.
- 16:22We do have short reads versus flutes.
- 16:25I've only ever seen flutes on the internet, like watch people blow them on YouTube and whatnot. Yeah.
- 16:36That's the last thing to comment.
- 16:42Oh man. No, a flute is pretty fun to use.
- 16:47It gets really deep and raspy, but you can't do the things you can do in a short read with it.
- 16:53You can't go fast. You can't do all the stuff with it that you can with a short read.
- 16:57It is cool to watch somebody with a flute, though.
- 17:00No, it's awesome. It's crazy to think...
- 17:04That that's all they used to use for years. And now you can't hardly.
- 17:09I will say too, like the guys that can blow a flute call can blow it fast.
- 17:14Like if I blew a flute call right now, I'd sound like an absolute fucking idiot.
- 17:18But I might have to get one just so we can try it out.
- 17:22Honestly, I just think that would be cool. I think, I think you,
- 17:26I think Hunter Grounds has videos on YouTube of him running a flute call.
- 17:30Yeah, it's nuts. Look him up because Tim Grounds is probably the best I'd say
- 17:34all-around goose caller there ever was. Absolutely.
- 17:37And his boy Hunter, he's won so many calling competitions in the competition
- 17:40world and he can shred a flute.
- 17:43That dude can rip. What are you guys using for goose calls? Brands? What do you got?
- 17:49I just got a Bay Country Shore thing. That thing sounds pretty good.
- 17:52It's a little bit deeper than my Malt Gear MG Rush that I usually use.
- 17:56That's more my traffic or really far out geese kind of thing.
- 18:02But that Bay country gets nice and soft and sweet with them.
- 18:06Yeah, I haven't used that or tried your call out at all since you got that one.
- 18:10Because you used to use the Malt Gear primarily, didn't you?
- 18:13Yeah, and then I had a big Sean with, it's a flex call, like a rubber call,
- 18:18and then it's got flex guts in it too.
- 18:20Really? Yeah, it's really quiet, but oh my God, that thing, I used it last year
- 18:25in the fog and you were just like, holy shit.
- 18:29I will say that big Sean when you have geese close to
- 18:33you like working you that thing sounds just so
- 18:36sweet yeah like they just eat that shit up I need to get a new read for it so
- 18:41I can actually use it because I've never split a read on a call and somehow
- 18:44I I don't know if I got a stick stuck in it or what but it broke the shit out
- 18:48of it I destroyed a one of my short read on my foils crime scene I had.
- 18:55I completely, dude, the reed was shot. Like, it was split all the way to the cork.
- 19:00See, like, if it was on my mold gear, I could see it because I'd blow the absolute
- 19:03shit out of that thing, but I've never blown that call hard, ever.
- 19:08We got grandpa. Grandpa does have a big Sean that sounds damn good.
- 19:12He also needs a new reed for that thing because it's starting to sound like dog shit.
- 19:16That guy don't even goose on. He doesn't know what he's talking about. He just ice fishes.
- 19:21Anything to do with that side by side but he's in and to answer Trace's question
- 19:27I'll let you guys what's your favorite breakfast that we make in the boat dog
- 19:31I'll tell you right now the burritos this year with the duck sausage,
- 19:36absolute bangers even the maple was pretty good I was surprised by that I almost
- 19:40thought the maple was better than the spicy I would agree yeah it's a very close
- 19:44comparison we had some damn good burritos this year.
- 19:49Holy shit. It's just some of Caged Trash falling over if you guys were under.
- 19:54If you guys could hear that.
- 19:56Oh, boy. It's really hard to beat a morning when you start out with cinnamon
- 20:00rolls and then have burritos after that, for sure.
- 20:05I don't know. I do like the old B's and G's with hash browns and bacon. I mean, that.
- 20:11And even when we mix in eggs with it, too, that can be making a haystack out
- 20:15of that. It's just hard to beat, too.
- 20:17Zach said the maple duck sauce's burritos were the ticket. Yeah.
- 20:20Yeah. The only problem with those is you would actually have to start selling
- 20:24burritos at the boat ramp because you could smell that shit from five miles
- 20:26away, dude. Dude, that was insane.
- 20:28That maple smell in the boat last year. The first time we cooked it, I'm like, oh, my God.
- 20:32Oh, it's nuts. When you were cooking it that day when it was snowing and Cade
- 20:36and I jumped out to clean off decoys, we're like trying to clean them off as
- 20:40fast as we can because we were at the far edge of the decoys and we could still smell it.
- 20:45So we're like running back because we were so
- 20:48hungry ready to eat yeah we were waiting on you guys to get back i'm like hurry
- 20:51up i'm starving oddly enough there were more than just us two in the boat with
- 20:54waiters on though i mean i was cooking uh crazy how that happens yeah who else
- 20:59was with us that day i think daniel and was it curtis disco yep yep yep yep disco and,
- 21:06skinny jeans you got skinny jeans uh so i'm back on the goose calls like i use
- 21:14the North Line now by Joe Hines.
- 21:16And since I bought that thing, I love it.
- 21:19That thing, I can't blow a goose call as good as Cade, but I can rip it pretty good.
- 21:25That's my main goal for this year is to get a little better goose calling.
- 21:28I mean, I can call in geese, no problem, but I want to sound better.
- 21:32Yeah, I can second that because I have a North Line as well from Joe,
- 21:36and I love that thing. I mean, I've only had it for...
- 21:40What like seven or eight months now and just from where i've started to where
- 21:44i've come to now has been a long ways for me personally but i really really
- 21:51enjoy blowing that call and how it sounds,
- 21:55hunter wants you to blow a call for him do you have your calls with you no because
- 21:58i brought the jeep mine are in that bag right there i have not blown that bay
- 22:03country i've never blown that thing before oh come on blow the mold gear i have
- 22:07blown the mold gear you can run out to my truck right now real quick and grab my north line.
- 22:11It's in the backseat. You can show the people what they want.
- 22:15Hey, let's relax, people.
- 22:17We want you guys to come back, not leave and never talk to us again.
- 22:22If you're scared, you could just say that.
- 22:24I will say, though, once I... Like, I had blown your north line a couple times,
- 22:28and once I retuned that thing, I was like, holy shit, that sounds really good.
- 22:32If I wouldn't have just blown or just bought that Bay Country,
- 22:36I definitely would have bought one right then and there. He did a really good
- 22:38job. I mean, it's very similar.
- 22:40I looked over the guts. They're very similar to the Malt gear setup.
- 22:43But he, I don't know, just from what I can tell it looks like he did a few things
- 22:46different, but either way did a great job with that call. I'm very pleased with it.
- 22:51I have to break in that Teemu microphone with a goose call.
- 22:55Break it in, boy. Break it in. I'm not fucking doing it. That's not happening. I'm not doing it.
- 23:03I'll be so embarrassed. That's part of the fun. You're going to be embarrassed
- 23:06either way. Nobody will respect us even more.
- 23:11What's our next line for goose calls? Is that it on the goose calls?
- 23:15Acrylic, poly, and wood. Yeah, we have acrylic, poly, and wood.
- 23:18And Cade, the other day when we were talking about calls, because I'm talking
- 23:23about getting a new lanyard and I'm talking about getting another duck call and everything.
- 23:28So I'm talking to Cade about it and I'm telling him what color I want.
- 23:32This dude swears that different color calls sound different.
- 23:37They do for a fact, dog. Why do you think that?
- 23:41This guy. Next time you're at foils, especially goose calls.
- 23:44Goose calls are the ones that I've always noticed. But if you pick up the same
- 23:48exact call, a black versus an ivory, it sounds way different.
- 23:52I don't really believe that.
- 23:54I would so disagree with that. Look at all the callers that call in competitions.
- 23:58They're always blowing a black call because they sound different.
- 24:01Maybe. I'm not saying it's not true. I'm just saying I have never in my life heard that.
- 24:06No, I just have a white call, so I'm just calling bullshit.
- 24:10I've even seen it like Bobby Heim.
- 24:14He's the same way. He's always got black calls on his laner, black calls on stage.
- 24:19He swears they sound different. I mean, maybe. I'm not here to say that that's
- 24:24not true. I'm just here to say that I don't necessarily believe that.
- 24:27I'm just saying, I think my white north line sounds better than his black,
- 24:33but maybe that's because I'm better than him, and you tuned in. Oh, dang.
- 24:39Yeah, you guys have the same call, right?
- 24:41Different colors? Yeah, but I haven't blown his white one. I'll make sure you
- 24:45bring it tomorrow when we hunt.
- 24:46All right. And I'll try it out, and I'll prove Cade wrong. And then we'll come
- 24:49back here, and I'll tune in both the exact same, and they'll sound different. No.
- 24:53Any of you guys in here? Don't touch mine, because I love the way that it sounds.
- 25:00And I don't want that to get fucked up. All right. Well, I'll tune his to yours,
- 25:04then. Yes. There you go. That's it.
- 25:09I'm getting yelled at from everybody not to fuck with their calls.
- 25:12The answer is yes. Yeah, I suppose I could probably dabble. What?
- 25:18August said it's due to the heat factor when it's made from what he's heard.
- 25:21I didn't even know that dude's a fear anymore. See? I'm not the only one that knows it.
- 25:26I'm honestly surprised you didn't know it. From what he heard,
- 25:30he can't hear us talking on the other end of the blind. What do you mean? He's too old anyways.
- 25:35Have I been getting any better at killing ducks at close range?
- 25:38Abso-fucking-lutely not.
- 25:40I don't know. You did kill that goose the other day. That was pretty close.
- 25:43That's not a duck, though.
- 25:44I know, but that's an even bigger target that should be harder for you to hit up close.
- 25:49No, because it's got more area that I can hit without missing. I don't know.
- 25:55Pretty sure the target range at 10 feet is still about the same on bull.
- 25:58It is. It's the same pattern, no matter what.
- 26:01Now that Pookie's out of here, we can really talk some shit. We can.
- 26:05What's our... He just leaves the door open like he's born in a fucking barn.
- 26:09Yeah, no. I just don't mind the heater just ripping now all of a sudden.
- 26:13So what's our, oh, we've got boats and motors next, don't we? We do.
- 26:17Ooh, the first one is manufactured boats versus plate boats.
- 26:20And that's a great one for you to speak on because you have both of them.
- 26:24I do have both of them. You do?
- 26:27I've had both, and I currently have both. I will say, a manufactured boat for
- 26:32the everyday person is probably more than good.
- 26:35Like, it's going to last you as long as you need it to last.
- 26:39Now, if you're going to beat the living dog shit out of it, jumping logs or
- 26:43just breaking ice and just using it and abusing it. That splattered me right in the fucking nose.
- 26:51The plate boat's going to be the better option. And honestly,
- 26:54you get more bang for your buck because you can spend the same money on a plate
- 26:58boat and get a way better built boat. Yeah.
- 27:01But it's going to take longer to get. You can't go to a, what is it called? Southern Mud?
- 27:07And then a couple other places around here. I don't know who actually sells
- 27:10boats nowadays, but you can go to a boat dealer and you can buy a John boat
- 27:14tomorrow and you could drive it home or pull it home. But you can't do that with a plate boat.
- 27:19I mean, you got to go to your builder and have him design it and then build
- 27:23it. my guy that I go through is like a year and a half, two years out. Shit.
- 27:29Well, hopefully you get to the point where you can start building yourself.
- 27:32That'd be ideal. Yeah, you gotta have a shop to do that for me.
- 27:36It's in the works. I'm about to be homeless, dude. I'm going the wrong way.
- 27:41I got this nice garage you can sleep in if you have to. I'm gonna cut a hole
- 27:45in my back fence and he's gonna park his camper in my backyard.
- 27:49Your neighbors would love that. Yeah, no, they would actually hate us.
- 27:53I feel like they already do.
- 27:55Maybe a little bit. Dude, I would hate living next to a state cop. That's crazy.
- 28:01Neighborhood's so safe. No, I'd imagine. Yeah. But I couldn't do anything illegal.
- 28:05No. Why would you want to?
- 28:08No, not that I would want to do anything illegal. It's just you never know what
- 28:10happens when you get started partying naked. Oh, God.
- 28:14So what about the difference or preference in or between flat bottoms, semi-V, or V-hole?
- 28:22Once again, that's going to apply to your situation you're in.
- 28:24I mean, if you're hunting a
- 28:26lot of shallow water, the flat bottoms are going to be your go-to on that.
- 28:30Then the semi-V is a flat bottom with a V front.
- 28:33So you can at least run some open water and it'll break the waves a little bit
- 28:38in the front so you're not just getting completely douched with water every
- 28:42time you hit a wave like a flat bottom does.
- 28:44I don't know. Your boat still soaks me every time I hit a wave.
- 28:47Every single time. Maybe that's just the operator. It's no. Well,
- 28:51then I guess it's fucking both of us.
- 28:55Once again, maybe it's just the operator. God damn.
- 28:59It does. That boat sits just low. It's got low sides. So you are going to get
- 29:02a little wet in that boat compared to.
- 29:03You've also never ran it with the almost 900 pounds of decoys in it.
- 29:07Yes, I have. You have? Yeah. Oh.
- 29:10And I have never. I've gotten like a little wet when there's three foot waves, but that's it.
- 29:16No, he's never ran it for an extended period of time with it because the day
- 29:20that he had to come back and pick me up, all the decoys were out of it.
- 29:23So that's a considerable amount of weight.
- 29:25He doesn't get it. I have ran it for all the decoys in it. No, no.
- 29:28Fuck too. I went out scouting a couple times this year in that boat by myself.
- 29:33Probably a 10 mile an hour away. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay. Anyways.
- 29:37Then you got the V-holes, which is what my big boat is. It's a V-hole,
- 29:41but I've only got a four-degree hole, so it's got a four-inch rise from center.
- 29:45And that thing will break the waves amazing and to break ice the best out of
- 29:49all three options that's the only boat that will break ice consistently and
- 29:52we can break on the very high side you can break 5 inches of ice but it does
- 29:57not like breaking 5 inches of ice,
- 30:00dog we were breaking like 7 yeah it still doesn't like it and I prefer to only
- 30:06do about 5 inches I'd say fucking 4,
- 30:09yeah I mean there were a few times we were going through some ice that it would
- 30:13go up on and then break through a little bit later. Yeah, seven days later.
- 30:18Or we just get stuck on top of all the ice. Yeah, there's that.
- 30:22You are also one of the only guys from around this area that specifically run
- 30:28two boats for your setup, too.
- 30:31Yeah, there's a lot of guys that run multiple boats, but it's just because they
- 30:35are running a mud motor and they don't want to load it down too heavy with people.
- 30:38Yeah. So, I mean, they'll run three or four boats just because of that.
- 30:43But not because they have 1756 that's overflowing with decoys. Yeah, there's that.
- 30:50It's not overflowing. It's pretty
- 30:52fucking close. See, the tarp holds everything and they're just fine.
- 30:56That's a lot of decoys and a lot of weight for that boat. Yeah. No, it's not.
- 31:05What else do we have here? Oh, I'm really curious about this because I don't
- 31:11know a lot, But jackplates and kickplate utilization.
- 31:18Well, let Cade speak on that a little bit, because this is kind of like his
- 31:20first year of running a boat with a jackplate.
- 31:23Dog, I will never own a boat ever again without a jackplate.
- 31:26That thing is an absolute lifesaver. That makes a world of difference. Yeah.
- 31:31Makes an outboard viable for the way we run them. Yes, absolutely.
- 31:36Without that jackplate, you're not going to go many places, period.
- 31:40No. Not around here. I mean, even, even when we're at winter pool,
- 31:43you're still just not going to have a good time.
- 31:46No, cause there's been times that I'm following you at whatever the hell you're
- 31:49running 50 mile an hour and all 63.
- 31:54Yeah. Well, not usually with five guys in the boat, but. No,
- 31:57it does 62 with five guys in the boat.
- 31:59Yeah, no, I, I opened it up this
- 32:01year with five guys in it and we were at 62.57 or some shit like that.
- 32:09It's not stupid. It's fun. But there has been times like we'll run up into a shallow hole and I'll,
- 32:15It's three o'clock in the morning, not using my brain. I'll feel the motor drag
- 32:19and I'm like, oh yeah, shit. I got a, I got a plate back here. I can move real quick.
- 32:23Yeah. Usually before we hit in that, I'm reaching back and cause my,
- 32:26on the big boat, like the jack plate switch is not in as good a spot as it is on the little boat.
- 32:31When you're sitting down on that little boat running, it's just kind of right
- 32:34there on the big boat. It's mounted to my tiller handle.
- 32:36So I got to grab the front of the tiller handle with my right hand and then
- 32:39reach back and turn that thing up all the way.
- 32:41But I'm just used to it. So it's just a creature. I'm just a creature habit now with it. Yeah.
- 32:45Um, I'm getting used to it now. Like when I know we're getting into shallow
- 32:49spots, I'm like, okay, I got to pick the plate up or I'm going to absolutely fuck myself.
- 32:53It is really nice to have that plate on it though, and be able to run that little
- 32:57boat so comfortably with that plate down and everything. And then just to get
- 33:02to those more shallow portions of it and just run it up.
- 33:05And then that boat with that motor on it, you can still get it on plane so fast
- 33:10that it's, I mean, really, it's still just a comfortable ride in it,
- 33:14but just the functionality of it alone is super nice.
- 33:18Yeah, I feel like that boat with the jackplate is almost, I mean,
- 33:23like, you can't baha out of sushi. Oh, God.
- 33:28You can't baha out of, like, sand and shit because you'll fuck the impeller
- 33:31up, but I mean, as far as, like, getting on plain and shallow water,
- 33:34I feel like it's almost the exact same as having a mud motor with that jackplate on it.
- 33:38I mean, we can go, we can get up and go pretty much everywhere a surface drive can go.
- 33:41You know, a long tail, I mean, around here, A long tail's not going to go any
- 33:44farther than a surface drive because we got too hard of a bottom.
- 33:47But we can go pretty much everywhere they go. Now, it might take us a little bit longer to get out of,
- 33:53there when we get there but but i've said it before that thing
- 33:56does like your boat does 60 something the
- 33:59little boat does 50 i mean you make up your
- 34:01time times like seven yeah no i've passed plenty of people that have left the
- 34:07same time i did and i have to put out for a half a mile yeah and then get on
- 34:11plane and we catch them before they get to the ramp and it's really not that
- 34:14far of a run no well just that day that it was me you and newendorp and i couldn't like the only time,
- 34:20I couldn't get the little boat on plane because all the
- 34:23water had blown out with that like 37 mile an hour wind but as soon as we got
- 34:29like it took me longer to get out of the hole than it did after we got out to
- 34:34get back to the ramp yeah yeah and I'm like wow this is stupid that's how it
- 34:39works then it doesn't matter where you're at like that's.
- 34:43It kind of sucks though because I I messed up the little boats prop and the
- 34:47big boat this year too I messed up both props myself because I got back to the
- 34:52boat ramp and clipped some rocks with the little boat that day and it really messed with the blades.
- 34:57And then the big boat, I was putting the boat on the trailer and I got rocks
- 35:00in the prop on the trailer. Not good. No.
- 35:05Stop throwing rocks from the boat ramp to test the ice. For the love of God.
- 35:11It should be a rideable offense. Yeah, it should. Jail. Straight to San Quentin.
- 35:20Dude, your phone vibrates like crazy. Dude, I'm sorry. I'm a popular person.
- 35:24For one, it never stops going off. And for two, the vibrate on that thing is
- 35:28like fucking out of this world.
- 35:30I feel like you got that vibrate set like extremely high for a reason.
- 35:32If you guys are wondering, the Raiders beat the Chiefs, so somebody should probably
- 35:36check on your brother-in-law.
- 35:38Yeah. Because he's going to hear about it for the next couple months.
- 35:42Someone's going to have to check on Neuendorp too.
- 35:44He's going to be bad too. He should be in here. Neuendorp, are you okay? Okay.
- 35:49Uh-oh. Ooh. Ooh. He might not be okay. He's not coming. Oh, no.
- 35:54What do we got next? You just said he had a snap. Mud motors against outboards. Ooh.
- 36:00Ooh. The hot topic for dad over here. Hold on. You love mud motors, right?
- 36:07He just said, no, I'm not okay.
- 36:11No, Chris. No. New and Dorp's not allowed on those days when we have extracurricular activities.
- 36:17He's, Newendorp's not very ambidextrous. Yeah, he's just, we tried it one day,
- 36:23and it just did not go well.
- 36:24So, Tyler, have you read that new comment yet? That's the one I'm responding to. Yeah, no.
- 36:29Yeah, we don't let him, he just, I don't know, those nubs just don't do the trick.
- 36:38No, I want to hear your opinion about all these outboards that we hear all day
- 36:44long while we hunt, running back and forth. With outboards, you don't hear very
- 36:48many of them. Sorry, mud motors.
- 36:49Mud motors. My fault. I mean, we have mud motor races, not outboard races.
- 36:54I mean, I get it. I get why the guys have them. I mean, it's way easier.
- 37:01It's way easier to get to the places we go to and everybody hunts with the surface
- 37:06drive, especially if you don't know how to run a boat that well on an outboard.
- 37:10Now, you can do it with an outboard. It can cost you a little more money in
- 37:13the long run to do it with the outboard setup, but I think they last longer
- 37:16and they're way more reliable than that lawnmower engine.
- 37:19That is the big problem with the surface drive is it is a lawnmower engine straight up.
- 37:26Like there's no question about it. It's a lawnmower motor.
- 37:29I know we both know two guys personally that well one guy his motor didn't even
- 37:34make it to duck season and blew up and then the other guy blew up his motor
- 37:39what within the first two weeks of season? Yeah it was two weeks about.
- 37:42So I mean That was fun, wasn't it? Dad, that was really fun.
- 37:47Oh, yeah, that's right. You were there the day that one of them blew up.
- 37:50I was. If that wind would have been blowing the opposite way and we could have
- 37:53got on the opposite bank that we ended up on, it would have...
- 37:56Actually been all right. We'd have been fine. You know, the last time I,
- 38:00I didn't break down, but I ran out of gas in the boat.
- 38:03I launched at one ramp, ran all the way up in the boxcar, and then there was
- 38:07lights everywhere. I said, screw this. I'm by myself.
- 38:10Turned around, ran all the way back down the lake, and I was getting close to where I wanted to go.
- 38:16And it started sputtering and then died. I'm like, shit.
- 38:19So I pulled the motor cover off. I'm like, what is going on here?
- 38:21Because I didn't have my fuel gauge hooked up because I just unhooked it for
- 38:23some reason. Einstein. Yeah, not a good idea.
- 38:27And then I realized I was out of gas. So I just floated into a spot and I ended up killing my six ducks.
- 38:33Every time I killed my six ducks, another guy brought me gas and I was good to go. Left all the good.
- 38:39Zach with the humdinger. You know what else he runs out of?
- 38:43Propane. Yes, he does. Back. More than one time now we're on this kick.
- 38:48This is why he doesn't have friends.
- 38:51I will say if Zach would have just had waterproof coat that day,
- 38:56he would have been in a lot better situation though.
- 38:59Yeah, I can relate because I've hunted out of that boat with a waterproof coat
- 39:02that doesn't have burn holes in it. And it's a lot different.
- 39:05Yeah. I mean, you know, when you know it's going to rain, you'd think you'd
- 39:08come prepared to hunt in the rain. At least in my defense, I tried.
- 39:12I just didn't really have a choice when I found out at nine o'clock the night
- 39:15before that my coat was burnt. Yeah, no, dude, you were cooked from the beginning.
- 39:20But then Neuendorp shows up in a hoodie and a vest. Yeah, that was not a great move.
- 39:25Yeah, and then he's sitting over there next to me shivering the whole time. I felt bad for the guy.
- 39:31And then you guys wanted me to pick for a leave, and I'm like, guys, I'm dry.
- 39:35Don't ask me. I'll hunt all day. I'm not uncomfortable. That was cold.
- 39:40I will say running your little boat back when I had...
- 39:45That guy sounds like a deer hunter. Look at that guy. Oh, fuck,
- 39:49he's here. Grandpa's here.
- 39:52God damn talking all that shit and then he just shows up that's why you don't talk to him about it,
- 39:59I really gotta hide my location he's probably got fucking air tags on my shit
- 40:02too yeah probably but running your little boat back when it had that boss on
- 40:07it was really really fun too that thing was just so touchy,
- 40:13that like when you went you went yeah no that thing was it was a lot of fun
- 40:19to run but it was not as fast as it needed to be. No, it was slow.
- 40:23Yeah. Compared to what you have now. It only did like 35-40. Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:28You get worse and worse looking every time I see you.
- 40:33Isn't it though? I get it.
- 40:37It's all right. Now we have stalkers. We have stalkers showing up for us now. I love it.
- 40:47It must be camera shy. He knows right where that camera's at.
- 40:50Yeah. I mean, he's just standing right off the camera. That's crazy.
- 40:54Got the door open, letting the heat out. I'm all he's leaving. Look at this guy.
- 40:59Oh, fuck. He's about to flip me over.
- 41:02Be a lot cooler if he did. No. No. Be kind of funny. How about no?
- 41:08He was talking about them calls. It's a plastic. So Doug Hess, you know who he is. Yeah.
- 41:14He said it depends on the blank and the color of the blank. Give me your mic.
- 41:18Yeah. He said, yeah, why don't you, here, why don't you take this seat?
- 41:24You know what you're talking about. I got to use the bathroom anyway.
- 41:27Shocker. That's like the 55th time he's used the bathroom tonight already.
- 41:30That dude has a bladder the size of a fucking peanut. If bad.
- 41:34I don't even know if it's that big.
- 41:36That's what happens if you have real small tools to deal with.
- 41:40On that one, you got to crawl right up on it. Like this close.
- 41:44You're getting there. Yeah. Yeah. No, he deep throats it. Austin deep throats it, but he's a pro. So.
- 41:49What I heard. That's why you guys like hiding with him. He's definitely better
- 41:53than Nguyen Dorp, that's for sure. Nice. Nice. Nice.
- 41:57Is that kind of his profession? That's his way to contribute since he can't
- 42:01use a call? It is. Yeah. Nice. That's how he keeps the spot. It is indeed. Cool.
- 42:06So the way that that was explained to me on your, your, your,
- 42:12the calls. Yeah. The colors.
- 42:14Black obviously is more dense the way that Doug explained it to me,
- 42:20but the whites, purples.
- 42:22All that sort of stuff is how it's treated in that blank, you know,
- 42:28will vary from call to call.
- 42:30And it's no different than wood. wood if you know if you got a chunk of hedge
- 42:34you know this this chunk of hedge will be different from another chunk of hedge
- 42:41even though it's cut from the same tree right you know it'll be it'll be different
- 42:45from call to call he said actually you'll have a run of calls that all tune real easy.
- 42:49And in the next the next chunk of calls
- 42:52that comes out of that other wood he said he'll fight all day
- 42:55long trying to do it yeah yeah no
- 42:58the like when i've always used when i used to use wood a lot it
- 43:00was always coca bola sure that that that was to me the
- 43:03best sounding wood call you could get back then even actually
- 43:06even now i'd say it's probably one of the better sounding duck calls or yeah then
- 43:10my i can't remember what the name of that wood was that
- 43:13he he got with some kind of special and that stuff
- 43:15was just absolutely ridiculously hard was it
- 43:18morning that you know that's that at your
- 43:23age i will yeah my age is a little different but that's
- 43:27why i have a young girl because that's the only way i can keep that stuff
- 43:30up oh my goodness
- 43:34but yeah so that's that's
- 43:38what it was explained to me uh because it was funny because like you said you
- 43:42can grab one call that's man i think just the minute you pick it up you're just
- 43:46like oh this is it i'm buying it i don't care what the cost if it's 300 bucks
- 43:51whatever yeah i'm gonna have it forever the next call you pick up.
- 43:56It's like, whoa, I wouldn't give you $10 for it. Yeah.
- 44:00I think there's a problem with us waterfowlers. It's like, oh,
- 44:02I'll buy this one. I'm going to use this one forever.
- 44:03And then you see another one like within the next year and you're like,
- 44:06oh, you know what? I kind of like that one too. Right. I'm going to buy this one. Right.
- 44:09You know, too, when you guys were talking about calls and, you know, I ran into it years ago.
- 44:15I mean, it's not so much now, but guys would buy, you know, Buck Gardner shell
- 44:22calls right off the shelf.
- 44:23And they're like, oh, I want to learn how to blow a duck call.
- 44:25I'm like, well, listen, if you're going to, that's great and all if you want
- 44:28to go spend 20 bucks and buy a duck call.
- 44:30But man, spend, you know, 50, 60 bucks, get something that somebody's actually
- 44:37made and take the time, not production.
- 44:40And then, I mean, that's my opinion, but production call.
- 44:42Yeah, you can make it sound good, but it's not, you can't do the things with
- 44:46it. Like you can't do something else.
- 44:48But like when I was mentioning the, the buck gardener call, like that double
- 44:52nasties, like that was a call that me growing up, I could grab it off the shelf.
- 44:55And I could rip it right out of the box.
- 44:58Almost every one of them on the double nasties. He was a whole different guy all in himself.
- 45:03That guy could make a duck call. Did you ever meet him?
- 45:08I did not ever meet Buck Gardner personally. He was a big dude.
- 45:11Yeah. Yeah. He was a big guy. But, I mean, he would tell you anything you wanted
- 45:17to know about duck hunting, duck calling, I mean, anything.
- 45:22And he would be, we needed more guys like him nowadays.
- 45:26Yeah. I mean, Jeff is a lot like him when it comes to work with him.
- 45:30If you ever see Jeff Foyles at a show, and you just stop by his booth and talk
- 45:35to him, even if you don't have one of his duck calls, nine times out of ten,
- 45:38if he's not just swamped with people, he'll tune that call for you,
- 45:41no matter what the brand is, and he'll help you out with it.
- 45:45You know, a guy that tunes goose calls, it's kind of, I think he knows what
- 45:49he's doing, but I think he does.
- 45:51I couldn't remember when he couldn't hardly blow a goose call.
- 45:54Yeah, no shit. That was like when I first started hunting with you.
- 45:57That was absolute dog shit, dude. That kid's come a long ways, though.
- 46:03I don't know, 10 years, I've done it with you? Yeah, pretty close.
- 46:07Close to 10. Something like that? Yeah.
- 46:08That big mud ordeal out there. Oh. White rest that time.
- 46:14Stepping in six inches of mud,
- 46:17and then below that six inches of mud was nothing but just muck. Oh, man.
- 46:23Yeah, it was bad. Yeah, before the water gets on top of that stuff,
- 46:25that mud sucks. No, that was the spot that we found the geese the other day. Yeah.
- 46:31It never gets hard. We're at?
- 46:35Oh, yeah. No, that spot. They don't ever get any more water on it.
- 46:40It's that depth all year long. You guys never got into some of that hunting
- 46:45in that area. I think we all know where it's at.
- 46:48So back when I first started hunting that, back during the big war.
- 46:52Back in Nau. I was running around back then.
- 46:58Great Depression for sure. Yeah, that's how Great Depression started.
- 47:03But that it was a, it was that whole back area was nothing but all cattails.
- 47:09Well, I didn't have a dog back then. So I had to shoot my ducks like close.
- 47:15Cause if, if you had any kind of wind or wall, nah, you wasn't going to retrieve them.
- 47:19Yeah. Cause I mean, you was literally, I would sit there and rock into that
- 47:23mud and get down to about hip deep. So I could be level.
- 47:27Cause I mean, you were only talking that much water, but you'd be four foot
- 47:30of mud. Oh, it was, it was horrible.
- 47:32So you just bury yourself in the hood? Just bury myself in the hood.
- 47:35No, thank you. I'm not doing that. But you had to.
- 47:38Was that back in like the wax wader days or what? Dude. They didn't have waders back in the beginning.
- 47:44If you never had rubber ball waders, a red, red ball rubber waders,
- 47:48what they were, they were, they were called red ball rubber waders.
- 47:52And that's, oh my God, they sucked.
- 47:56So here you got, you know, I hear some people just complaining about, you know,
- 48:01You know, man, all my feet are cold in these 1200 grand Thinsulate waders boots.
- 48:05And, oh man, I just don't know how I can, how I can stand to hunt out here all
- 48:09day long in this heated boat. And my feet are cold. Really?
- 48:13Really? You never been, you never hunted in rough waders. Why are you looking at me?
- 48:17So you've been around long enough that you've seen the kind of evolution of waders.
- 48:22Do you remember, so going from like, when we first got neoprene waders,
- 48:27that was like the biggest hunt because they were so warm, right?
- 48:29Yep. Everybody loved them. And now looking at what we have now,
- 48:33everybody's going to these shins and Sitka waders and dive bombs.
- 48:36We're back to what we started with. No insulation in waders other than the boot.
- 48:40Okay. So the difference, I mean, here again, in my opinion, is the rubber, we had La Crosse.
- 48:48They was a big brand back then. I mean, obviously, they're still a big brand.
- 48:51They're still huge, yeah. I think they make the boots for the shin waders. Do they? Mm-hmm. Okay.
- 48:56As long as they're on the waders, right, they're not that big of a deal. Yeah.
- 49:01And then people use felt soil waders.
- 49:04I mean, they still do it now for fishing, but the, the old rubber,
- 49:11rubber waders, canvas waders, the thing that they sucked about the canvas,
- 49:16that was loud. Oh, really?
- 49:20Oh, my God. My God. So the, the, the canvas waders, they were so hard to get
- 49:26on and off because they were, I mean, it sucked. Yeah, no, they were a pretty stiff material. Yeah.
- 49:32But these breathable waders, man, for, I mean, I'm not a fat guy,
- 49:37but I ain't the skinniest guy
- 49:38in the world, but they're 10 times easier to get on. At least you know.
- 49:43I'll own it. I'll own it. Hey, what I want to know, every time that I've hunted
- 49:48with you in the last, I shit you not, 10 years. Yeah.
- 49:52Who's the, who's the first one that asked for a little bit of heat?
- 49:55I can't hear you. I imagine he's probably the really old guy.
- 50:00I shit you not. We'll legit park the boat and he's like, I'm a little heat, boys.
- 50:05That's okay, August. It's usually between Cade or Pookie over there.
- 50:09It's usually Pookie. Who asked that for the heat?
- 50:12It's usually Pookie. No, it's usually Pookie. Usually. But Cade did turn his
- 50:17heater on first a lot this year.
- 50:19I did. I mean, if you got it, you might not use it.
- 50:22Yeah, because I'm sweating. That's why. No, it's because this motherfucker runs
- 50:27out of propane all the time.
- 50:29I hear an ongoing trend here. You know what's crazy, though,
- 50:34is both of these people have moving vehicles that operate down the highway, right?
- 50:39We also have propane tanks sitting right here. Or you could just bring the propane
- 50:44or ask, hey, is the propane tank full?
- 50:46Oh, I don't know. There's one time that I did make the mistake of saying we're probably good.
- 50:50Other than that, they're more than capable of going out there and filling a
- 50:53propane tank and bringing a propane tank.
- 50:56But on the private side of that i would rather run out of propane than i would
- 51:00boat gas you know i've been there and done that too yeah yeah we had to come
- 51:05across lake red rock one time,
- 51:07me and phil and i'm back i'm back there with the with the with the gas tank
- 51:12tipping it making it making it lean right to where the pickup tube is oh man
- 51:19i just don't run out of gas waves are breaking over the bow of the boat.
- 51:22And I'm like, this was not going to end well.
- 51:26But getting back to your wader thing, like these breathables and the way that
- 51:30all that, I mean, it's kind of like anything. The way that duck hunting has
- 51:35evolved since I first started.
- 51:37500 years ago. So what you guys have got now is, I mean, it's made it better.
- 51:47It's definitely made it better through the years. I mean, the gear has gotten...
- 51:5010 times better in the past 10 years. 20 times better, I'd say. Yeah. I mean, it's cool.
- 51:57Yeah. I mean, when we had it in snowstorms, like more owners can sink it out in the cold.
- 52:04Yeah. No, I mean, it's way easier to go out there in the cold on them brutal
- 52:08days that nobody would be out there on. Yeah.
- 52:10Now you see people out there, and it's not just the diehards.
- 52:13There's a couple just random people out there, too. You guys,
- 52:16I mean, you got heated coats. You got heated socks. You got heated gloves.
- 52:20I mean, you got all that stuff at your... What the fuck are you looking at me for?
- 52:24You just got all that stuff here recently.
- 52:29God damn. Nah, it's fine. Just let these two. Let these two. Oh, John.
- 52:36You're leaving me again?
- 52:40You left me with Pookie the first time. What do you got? Are you an outboard guy or a mud motor guy?
- 52:47Oh, boy. What's that saying?
- 52:51Situation dictates purpose yeah i mean there again so if you're hunting a lake,
- 52:59and you're hunting deeper water outboard i mean all day what about an outboard with a jack plate,
- 53:07okay so so okay if
- 53:10you're gonna run an outboard and you're running in a lot of cabbage you get
- 53:15you i don't care what what you got for a prop i don't care what you got for
- 53:19jack play it's going to get wrapped up right so i and dad says no it does not
- 53:27get wrapped up like a mud motor does,
- 53:29no if you're if you got if you're,
- 53:33If you don't have 5,000 horsepower. Who the hell has 5,000 horsepower?
- 53:38I don't know. The funny guy in the hat right next to me.
- 53:42Not 5,000. I don't have any money. We just went over this. I haven't worked. 300 horsepower. Okay.
- 53:48343. What? 343. Yeah. Has that been dino proven? 100%. Okay. Fuck.
- 53:57You know, we're in our race shop. So, I mean, horsepower gets stowed around
- 54:01pretty liberally. No, it's a former race shop.
- 54:03Yeah, this is not an active race shop currently.
- 54:06Maybe soon. Maybe not. This is the fucking podcast.
- 54:11If you got, okay. You got an outboard that's got 300 horsepower and a normal guy.
- 54:18Oh, Jamal. That's got an outboard that's got a 25 horsepower motor.
- 54:24He's got, and this goes back, stems back from back in the days when I used to
- 54:29hunt at Corville. There was a little place called Round Pond.
- 54:32We had to wait for guys to, with big motors to go through the bust up all the
- 54:37cabbage and everything, because at that time, all we could afford was a little nine, nine.
- 54:41Yeah. And it would just get wrapped up and couldn't go nowhere.
- 54:44Yeah. I mean, this was before even the invention of mud motors, but.
- 54:48Yeah. So, yeah, I, if you got enough horsepower to get through that stuff, great.
- 54:53But little guys, you know, it's a struggle. Yeah, but.
- 54:59Hunting the big reservoirs nowadays, it seems like we always have high water
- 55:02in the spring and the middle of the summer, so we don't ever have the vegetation we used to.
- 55:06Yeah, and you're not wrong. So, I mean, was it two years ago, three years ago maybe?
- 55:12We had such good vegetation. Like the grass grew up, the willows grew up,
- 55:17cattails, the whole nine yards grew up really well.
- 55:20And you're right. I mean, the smaller horsepower mutters don't go through it
- 55:23as well, but the one nice thing about an outboard is you throw it in reverse
- 55:26and you hammer on it reverse once And it does, compared to a surface drive or any kind of mud motor.
- 55:33I've never, I mean, I can't say never, but there's very few times that I've
- 55:38never gotten somewhere that I couldn't get with an outboard.
- 55:42Like if I, if I want to get there bad enough, you're going to get there. I'm going to get there.
- 55:48I mean, there's been times that, that, that I can remember, you don't remember the old duck boat.
- 55:54It was a 1460.
- 55:57And this guy is still shitting his diapers back then? This thing was him.
- 56:00Definitely. You were talking about a tank. This was made out of plywood. It was a plywood line.
- 56:06I mean, it was so stinking heavy. But we would push.
- 56:11I would be behind the boat pushing. A buddy of mine would be up on the front pulling with a rope.
- 56:16My dad would be up in the boat with a push pull outside of pushing back behind
- 56:22us, trying to get us through the mud.
- 56:24And as we're going across the mud, we're leaving tracks through the mud because
- 56:29you can see where the boat was sliding around the bottom. And right now.
- 56:33Yeah, would it be great to have a mud motor back then? Probably.
- 56:36But would a mud motor have gotten that heavy of a boat through that situation? Probably not.
- 56:41No. Yeah. So how bad do you want to go to where the ducks are at?
- 56:46It doesn't matter what you got for a motor. You're going to want to get there.
- 56:50Depends on your drive to get there. Yeah, that's right. I mean, yeah.
- 56:53The personal willpower goes a long ways compared to a mechanical object.
- 56:57It goes further than any motor possibly can. Well, Cade knows,
- 57:02but a buddy of ours, Judd, we was actually hunting white breasts.
- 57:07I had a 14 foot canoe. This is a true story.
- 57:11I had a 14 foot canoe and we was on one side of white breasts,
- 57:14literally watching ducks dump in by the hundreds on the other side.
- 57:18There's two and a half, three foot white caps going across white breasts.
- 57:24And we look at each other and we're like, well, the ducks want to be over there.
- 57:28They don't want to be where we're at.
- 57:30So here we go. The canoe, we throw like six decoys in this canoe and we start
- 57:37paddling across white brush. Waves are breaking over the side of the canoe.
- 57:40We go over there, shoot our ducks.
- 57:4315, 20 minutes later, we're done for the day. Now, to any listeners,
- 57:47I don't recommend doing that because I really don't feel like coming and rescuing you.
- 57:52Yeah, we're out hunting the next day and we find out that somebody fucking died.
- 57:56But there again, it goes right back to how bad do you want to,
- 57:59how bad do you want to get your ducks?
- 58:02You know, that's, but the safety stuff that is out today, you know,
- 58:07life jackets that will, I mean. Inflate when you have water.
- 58:10Yeah. But I mean, that's, if you don't have that stuff in your boat nowadays,
- 58:16I mean, it's, that's a no brainer. Yeah.
- 58:19Interesting fact on the, on the life jackets out hunting our spot.
- 58:24North you know where we go you get pulled over by dnr dnr says if you're hunting
- 58:30here you have to wear your life jacket while you're hunting got a ticket for
- 58:35it which game warden we'll talk about south dakota no you don't i i that's my argument so i mean.
- 58:46Yeah that's exactly yeah i know the game wardens up there very it wasn't tyler,
- 58:52No, there's another guy. Taylor?
- 58:54What was his name? It was the old guy with the glasses. It was the old guy with the glasses? Yeah. Nah.
- 59:00I'm dead, sir. It was inside the boat, just going up and down,
- 59:03him and his buddy. I usually bribe him a little bit with stuff, too.
- 59:06Yeah. So I'd bring him this soda from back home and give it to him.
- 59:09And, dude, he would leave us alone immediately.
- 59:13Yeah. Because we give him that soda every year, and he's just happy to see us.
- 59:16Because he'd be happy to pull us over.
- 59:18And we always got checked. He'd go through the boat, check the safety equipment,
- 59:20make sure we had everything. Yeah.
- 59:22And then he's like, you got any of that, you got any of that ski in the truck?
- 59:26Yeah, yeah, dude, I got a case of it. He's like, is that for me?
- 59:30Go ahead and take that and he's like i thought so so so he'd always stop at the truck and grab that,
- 59:35boxes of christmas tree cakes and he's like nah he
- 59:38don't he don't want for that trick i tried it once it didn't work out
- 59:40so i got arrested would that be a bad idea then if you offered him alcohol while
- 59:45you were out hunting yeah no i think that would probably be a bad idea yeah
- 59:48that would that would not go away i wanted to make sure that wasn't out i feel
- 59:52like i feel like you probably don't want to show you have alcohol in the boat
- 59:54whenever you're uh i mean highly front pump so pop, then that's the way to go.
- 59:59You have to sing the link on that.
- 1:00:01It's really expensive if you order it online.
- 1:00:04It's got to be cheaper than the ticket. Depends on what ticket you're getting.
- 1:00:12Oh, boy. All right. Well, you kids have fun. It's been fun. Thanks for stopping by.
- 1:00:20Just got back from ice fishing. We were talking a bit about you ice fishing,
- 1:00:24not shooting geese. You know what? We're not shooting geese either, so it's okay.
- 1:00:30Walleye tastes better. I'm just telling you. You never had the duck and goose
- 1:00:34the way I do it, have you? No. No, so you can't say that.
- 1:00:38I don't know how you do duck and geese. Like, it's hard to beat walleye on night. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:45Walleye from 30 foot of water in the wintertime when they're 18, 20 inch walleye.
- 1:00:49I mean, that's candy. Dude, we all know somebody lied to you about six inches
- 1:00:53anyway. They're not fucking 18 or 20. That's right. This is six inches all day long.
- 1:00:59Oh my God.
- 1:01:03Yeah. That way they're never disappointed. That is fair. Yeah.
- 1:01:08Did you only have inflatable life jackets in the boat?
- 1:01:12That yes we only had inflatable life jackets in
- 1:01:15the boat whenever you got stopped so you probably
- 1:01:18had regular life jackets too didn't you i did but here
- 1:01:22is another thing their life jackets like the inflatable ones make sure i mean
- 1:01:28and this might be a no-brainer to some people but some people i mean if you
- 1:01:32order them like off amazon or timu you know anything like that your favorite
- 1:01:37website Because you're trying to save money,
- 1:01:39make sure they're U.S. Coast Guard approved. Yep.
- 1:01:42Because. That's a big one. Yeah. Because they're not. They're not. That is an automatic.
- 1:01:46Yeah. That's a deal. But. I would say to his comment though that if they are
- 1:01:50the inflatable life jackets, you probably do have to have them on no matter
- 1:01:54what because that's not a life jacket you can grab.
- 1:01:57And throw. As you're sinking and put it on. Like you have to have that on to hunt.
- 1:02:01So I would say to answer that question, yeah, you would need to have.
- 1:02:04If you run in only those life jackets, you need to run with those on at all
- 1:02:08times when you run in the boat.
- 1:02:09And in that rate, if you only have those, you're probably supposed to hunt with
- 1:02:11those on, too. I don't know. If I'm not mistaken.
- 1:02:14If the boat's not moving, you don't have to have a life jacket on.
- 1:02:17See, and that was what my argument is. It's like, okay, wait a minute.
- 1:02:20I'm stationary. I'm sitting. Like, what's the deal? And he's like,
- 1:02:24nope. If you're hunting, you have to have a life jacket on.
- 1:02:28And I don't know. Now, this could be another thing. It could be a South Dakota
- 1:02:31law. Well, is that not regulated?
- 1:02:35Is that U.S. Coast Guard regulated water up there in that part?
- 1:02:40Or is that controlled by the state?
- 1:02:43Because I know on the Mississippi River, there are certain parts of the Mississippi
- 1:02:47River that are U.S. Coast Guard regulated. No, that's a federal waterway.
- 1:02:51Some of it. There's certain sections through that.
- 1:02:55Where you were and where you would be hunting in that area, it's all federal
- 1:03:00water. Up there? Yes. Okay.
- 1:03:02So, but is that U.S. Coast Guard regular? That would be U.S.
- 1:03:06Coast Guard laws. Yeah. It's not state mandated laws. It's federal.
- 1:03:10So the Coast Guard's federal. What you're saying is the nice little orange plate
- 1:03:14that I got on my boat, I probably need to make that go away.
- 1:03:17Or that little plate that says,
- 1:03:20this horsepower or this boat is only ready for this many horses. Yeah.
- 1:03:24Let's look up for those. But if you take it off, you can get a ticket for not
- 1:03:27having it off. Unless in Iowa here, you can just turn it for an O-R. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:03:32Right. Yeah. No, I just, I did.
- 1:03:36I've been telling you to call us. Yeah.
- 1:03:39Pookie says we need to get our local state conservation guy on here,
- 1:03:43but he's entirely too scared to call him.
- 1:03:45I think he's our only guy now, isn't he? No, he's still.
- 1:03:51He's retiring soon, though, isn't he? I thought it was after December 31st.
- 1:03:55I thought it was December 31st, yeah.
- 1:03:57Is he really? Yeah, and they're not filling his position, so it's just Hoffman. Really? Yep.
- 1:04:03I thought they weren't.
- 1:04:05Oh, never mind. They are filling his position. Austin lied to us the first time.
- 1:04:09Yeah, I would say if you're going to run the inflatable life jackets,
- 1:04:13I would definitely wear those at all times running the boat.
- 1:04:15If you have either the old orange ones, like just the standard ones,
- 1:04:19you don't need to wear those.
- 1:04:21Or if you have the sport ones, I think when it comes to waterfowl hunting,
- 1:04:24I think the old orange ones, the standard cheap ones, are probably your best
- 1:04:27option for when you're wearing your waders and everything because you can get
- 1:04:31to everything easier and they fit just easier.
- 1:04:34But if you have the inflatable ones that are going to inflate when you hit water,
- 1:04:37I would be wearing those at all times. Otherwise, you can get on at all times.
- 1:04:40I think when you're sitting, you're fine. But when you're running the boat,
- 1:04:42you need to have those on.
- 1:04:44Make sure they're outside of your coat, not inside your coat.
- 1:04:46Yeah. They need to be on the top layer of everything.
- 1:04:50Because I can see that happen. I mean, you can't believe seeing that.
- 1:04:55Right. It's not fucking normal that went north of Highway 2.
- 1:05:02This guy. The guy just shooting this guy, shooting darts from left field out there.
- 1:05:05I know it. I don't, I don't get what I was going to give you a bag of walleye,
- 1:05:09but no, no, not no more. Screw that.
- 1:05:12Damn. I hope you don't have window tent.
- 1:05:16You're screwed. You better drive now. Yeah. Get out of here.
- 1:05:23Well, I suppose I'll give this back to Pookie. Pookie. Pookie.
- 1:05:28Pookie bear. Pookie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:30Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. the guy but no thanks
- 1:05:33for letting me chime in yeah i
- 1:05:36don't know why you were gonna just try to hang out by the door and not yeah
- 1:05:39just well i just i was actually gonna peek in the door and just moon you that's
- 1:05:44what i was gonna that would have been pretty funny it's a good thing you don't
- 1:05:47have windows because he'd just be sitting there at the window still just scratching
- 1:05:50at the window i would have probably just been like like a cat or something we
- 1:05:53just see him on the computer just.
- 1:05:59Yeah yeah,
- 1:06:02That's what I should have done. We wouldn't have been able to see it,
- 1:06:04though. That is much light reflection.
- 1:06:05That's one thing he just pointed that way. Let me think about it.
- 1:06:07One thing when we're doing these podcasts, you should pull up the stream on the TV.
- 1:06:10Oh, yeah. You could see it. Oh, dude. And then just have it muted.
- 1:06:14And then you can see everything so much better. It's genius.
- 1:06:17Hey, quick thing while I'm in the garage.
- 1:06:20That $10,000 deal. Oh, man.
- 1:06:24Is that check still valid or is that not? No, it's void. It's void. Okay.
- 1:06:29No, it's void. I didn't know how that worked out.
- 1:06:34All right, guys. God damn. Hey, pull him over when he leaves.
- 1:06:40Good chatting with you, Tyler. Cade, for sure. Yeah, well, hopefully see you never.
- 1:06:46You guys stay gay. That's all I can ask. Can you grab me one on your way back?
- 1:06:53Oh, boy. All right. Good travels home. Yeah. Have fun. I spent the rest of the year.
- 1:07:00Yeah, I don't think we're going to be doing that much around here.
- 1:07:02No, the ice is too. We was clear. Down by the chickens. Fuck the hood house.
- 1:07:07Yeah, we was eight hours north of here. Oh, boy. Yeah. We drove. So fun fact.
- 1:07:13That nice brand new side by side I got. Uh-huh. We got three miles out on the ice.
- 1:07:18And I shot it off and went to start it back up to leave. And it fired up, died.
- 1:07:24Fired up, died. Check engine light comes on. I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 1:07:29Out here in three miles on the ice in the middle of nowhere. wearing this thing.
- 1:07:33So me and Polaris, we were going to have a, have a little chit chat session.
- 1:07:38Did you get it back home? Yeah. It fired back up. Check engine light stayed on the whole way.
- 1:07:43I would have, I would have cut a hole and just sunk that fucking thing.
- 1:07:45No, I've already been through the ice at once. That is not any fun.
- 1:07:50Two insurance claims are no good. Yeah.
- 1:07:53Yeah. It wouldn't even be, it'd be less than a year. Yeah.
- 1:07:57Yeah. Yeah. That would be, that was a bad.
- 1:08:00Not good. Yeah. No, that wasn't. but i went off a lot of
- 1:08:02fun the first time i don't recommend all right
- 1:08:06guys have a good one yeah you too get your
- 1:08:08spot back kooky come on what kind of what kind of blow through the rest of this
- 1:08:13yeah i don't really think we have a whole no that's it no honestly we can just
- 1:08:19do that you can just we can just see the closing thoughts for the people listening
- 1:08:23and the people that don't know that are watching that was august bock.
- 1:08:27Didn't really introduce him when he sat down. He just instantly started talking
- 1:08:30shit. Yeah, no. You gotta just run with it at that point in time. He's a natural.
- 1:08:34So, one thing we didn't discuss yet was, like, we'll just go straight to longtails and surface drives.
- 1:08:41So, like, I don't have any experience with longtails, but I know our boy Cade does a little bit.
- 1:08:45You can't even classify that as a longtail, dude. It's a fucking seven-horse motor.
- 1:08:50It's still a longtail. Bro, that thing rips.
- 1:08:53It does. It does. I'll get that. So, like, what are the benefits of having a
- 1:08:56long tail compared to a surface drive?
- 1:08:58What's that? Here? Nothing. Yeah.
- 1:09:02Nothing. There's no benefit. Like, in a normal circumstance?
- 1:09:05I don't know, because I've never used a long tail in a normal,
- 1:09:08like, mud motor circumstance.
- 1:09:11That motherfucker has a big-ass head. Yeah, he does. These things are, like, swimming on me.
- 1:09:16I've never used it in, like, an actual mud situation. I've always just kind
- 1:09:21of, like, it's just what I had.
- 1:09:24And then I guess, does anybody have a specific brand of a mud motor compared to outboard?
- 1:09:32Mud motor and outboard brands that they like? Obviously for me, it's Mercury.
- 1:09:38Outboards. If I'm going to choose an outboard, it's going to be a Mercury. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:09:42Kind of what he was saying too with the weeds getting wrapped around the prop.
- 1:09:47Didn't Mercury come out with the snout on the lower unit? Doesn't it have...
- 1:09:53There's no separation between the prop and the housing?
- 1:09:56No, the prop actually goes up inside the housing. On certain models,
- 1:10:00not all models yet, but on most models the prop goes into the gear case a little
- 1:10:04bit. Like a quarter inch.
- 1:10:05Which is plenty. Because that's the, like the whole problem with the old outboards
- 1:10:08is that there's a gap in between the prop and the housing.
- 1:10:13Right. So naturally shit gets wrapped in there. Yeah. But if you have the housing
- 1:10:17go over the prop, that doesn't happen. Yeah.
- 1:10:19So if you were to choose a mud motor, whether it's between ProDrive,
- 1:10:23Gator Tail, or Mud Buddy, which one are you going to run with if you were to buy a motor tomorrow?
- 1:10:27If I was to buy a motor tomorrow, I would go with the Gator Tail for sure. Yeah.
- 1:10:32I don't know, those new Mud Buddies, have you seen the new 5400 and the new
- 1:10:35trailer handle that came out? They're pretty sick.
- 1:10:37They look nice. Obviously, it's the first year they've been out,
- 1:10:39so time will tell how they run.
- 1:10:41But you hear a lot less of problems with the Gator Tails than any other one.
- 1:10:46Yeah, no, if I was, I'm the same boat, if I was to go buy one tomorrow,
- 1:10:49it would be a Gator Tail. Yeah.
- 1:10:50Just because of the reliability aspect. Yeah. The full power reverse on the
- 1:10:54ProDrive is badass, but. Yeah, no. And again.
- 1:10:59There's, ProDrive has its ups and downs. I think there's, if you're looking
- 1:11:03for an all-around mud motor, I don't think ProDrive is there.
- 1:11:05But if you're looking for something like you want to build a backup and backup
- 1:11:09easily, the ProDrive is your best option for reverse. Yeah.
- 1:11:13Without a doubt. But the problem is you add more of that shit to the already
- 1:11:17somewhat complicated system. I mean, that's just more shit that fails.
- 1:11:21We never have problems during hunting season. What are you talking about? Never. Not one.
- 1:11:28Dead batteries lights going out you name it we got it yeah we've had all the
- 1:11:33problems dead batteries no lights no propane fucking all of it once again full
- 1:11:38cords breaking we are all grown men and we have debit cards here so we can go
- 1:11:42or credit cards you can go buy propane on your credit card for all I care my wife checks that,
- 1:11:50before we close things out I figured we'd open it up to the comments see if
- 1:11:53anybody had any questions comments concerns on topics we've discussed in the past or even tonight.
- 1:11:59We'll give it, I don't know, two or three minutes here and see if anybody has
- 1:12:02anything to ask us or wants us to touch on before we kind of keep rolling with the closing thoughts.
- 1:12:10But it's been a fun podcast. It's probably been one of the more fun ones we've had in a while.
- 1:12:14Yeah, I feel like the, obviously, as you guys could tell, that was a very unplanned
- 1:12:19guest appearance. He just showed up out of nowhere.
- 1:12:22Just opens the garage door and says, Sup, fuckers. That was a blast.
- 1:12:27No, that's good, though.
- 1:12:29I mean, August is a dude that's done it for a long time.
- 1:12:33He's been around. He's seen a lot of things. And, I mean,
- 1:12:37hunted in a lot of different places, a lot of
- 1:12:40different circumstances so it's really good to get his point
- 1:12:43of view on everything he is like very
- 1:12:46much of that old school type hunter still like
- 1:12:49i mean and that's how he's always going to
- 1:12:52be but that's why we love him like that's
- 1:12:55that's what he is that's that's why we give him shit
- 1:12:58still the cool thing is too like i'm pretty
- 1:13:01sure he's done it since he's like 10 years
- 1:13:04old and now i think he's 50 something so he's
- 1:13:07seen a lot of shit and seen all of it come and go too
- 1:13:10right he hasn't for a long time uh that's it's
- 1:13:13always cool to talk to those guys that have done it forever yeah uh we have
- 1:13:16we have a question here from trent labarge hard blinds versus soft blinds i
- 1:13:22personally have hunted out of only one soft blind in my life and it i mean it
- 1:13:27works but you cannot to me my personal opinion you can't hide them near as well
- 1:13:31and they're not near as warm.
- 1:13:33No, a hard blind is 10 times warmer for sure.
- 1:13:37But if you got a small boat, like a, I'd say 16 footer and less,
- 1:13:42a soft blind's your ticket just because of weight in general.
- 1:13:46Like you can, you have a pop-up soft blind, you can run that on any.
- 1:13:52Size boat really and not worry about the weight as near as much as a hard blind
- 1:13:56hard blinds heavy and wind drag is a big thing too yep and that's something
- 1:14:00like we've talked about it before as far as like grassing your blind i feel
- 1:14:04like if you do a soft blind you can get away more with doing just like the synthetic
- 1:14:08grass to where it's it's all lightweight shit and then i mean,
- 1:14:12cover up with a little bit of whatever you're sitting in whether that's grass
- 1:14:16or willows or whatever. Yeah.
- 1:14:18I mean, the soft blind too, like that grass is, it's really easy to put on.
- 1:14:22Yeah. I mean, absolutely.
- 1:14:23Even if you lose some, it's you, most spots you hunt, you can get that stuff.
- 1:14:27Right. Whether it's cattails or ditch grass or Phragmite. Yeah.
- 1:14:30Add it to it and then you brush right in yep but
- 1:14:34if i'm gonna pick a hard blind or a soft blind it's gonna
- 1:14:37be a hard blind every day just because of warmth and everything else but but
- 1:14:41they weigh a lot like well they can weigh a lot depending on the model you go
- 1:14:43with i build i build aluminum blinds all aluminum and they they're a lot lighter
- 1:14:49than the old conduit yeah for sure.
- 1:14:55Jason, we'll touch on it, our go-to shot size, but this will be a topic next
- 1:14:59week as well we are going to touch on.
- 1:15:01We're going to keep the ball rolling with the apparel and gear,
- 1:15:04and then we'll have this week boats and motors and calls.
- 1:15:08Next week will be ammunition and shotguns and that kind of stuff that we use throughout the year.
- 1:15:15But my go-to shot size personally is the two-shot, and I use it for everything, ducks and geese.
- 1:15:20I don't know if you guys are the same way. I only use two-shot as well.
- 1:15:24I either shoot a two or a two-four stack. The two-four stacks are...
- 1:15:28Oh, he's got money, money.
- 1:15:29Yeah. Yeah, dog, I saved those for the high wind days or the days that I know
- 1:15:34I'm going to be shooting them at 50.
- 1:15:38That's every day. But no, that's a good question. I mean, that is going to be
- 1:15:42the topic next week, though, is ammunition and different brands of shotguns.
- 1:15:46I know it's going to be part of it. We wanted to keep kind of that series rolling here.
- 1:15:50That should be a really good episode, too, I feel like that's a...
- 1:15:53There will be a lot to talk about through that.
- 1:15:57If anybody's got anything else, now's your time to comment.
- 1:16:01Otherwise, I think we'll just keep rolling through our closing thoughts.
- 1:16:04We only have three more weeks of goose hell left in Iowa.
- 1:16:08It has been a goose season to forget for us. Dog, I'm starting to think I got
- 1:16:12one more week of it. Yeah.
- 1:16:14There are three more weeks of legal goose hunting. Now, I won't be hunting three
- 1:16:19more weeks. I have tomorrow and probably Saturday, and then my goose season's over. I'm done with it.
- 1:16:26I think I would just do the same thing. Like, Saturday will be my end-all deal.
- 1:16:29I might hunt Tuesday, too.
- 1:16:30Because I'm going to be home Tuesday. So, depending on how well we do tomorrow,
- 1:16:34I may hunt Tuesday still.
- 1:16:35He's lying. After you leave, I'll be able to convince him. Get him out. Just him and I. For sure.
- 1:16:41Well, the problem is, once he leaves, we'll find a badass feed.
- 1:16:45And it'll actually be cold enough that you can get in the field.
- 1:16:47And I'll be like, hey, thanks for taking the trailer keys.
- 1:16:51This whole week is going to be warm. So, that's one week I'll be gone.
- 1:16:54Because I leave Tuesday.
- 1:16:56Hopefully a truck is down. Yeah, but I don't, I don't count that because I wouldn't
- 1:16:59be able to hunt this week anyway. I wouldn't be able to hunt until Saturday.
- 1:17:01We're hunting Saturday regardless. You're gone the next weekend though.
- 1:17:05Yes. So, you can go to the South Zone and hunt? You got one more weekend without me.
- 1:17:11Nah, we'll figure it out without him. What, what,
- 1:17:16He had a turd in his pocket, evidently.
- 1:17:19While we're on the goose hunting topic, we did finally get a date for Goose
- 1:17:23Wars, and we are in the process of getting our team together,
- 1:17:27but that is coming up this weekend. I am very much looking forward to that.
- 1:17:31Whether we kill geese or not, competition's always fun.
- 1:17:34No, yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun, and I'm kind of excited of the camaraderie
- 1:17:41that it brings, too, And I think that we're going to put together a really good
- 1:17:45team and have, have a good time.
- 1:17:47That was my finger on your, on your ball. I was like, what the hell are you throwing?
- 1:17:52Yeah, I agree for sure. And I always think that's a cool thing.
- 1:17:56Like we always, all of our groups kind of like, we all know each other.
- 1:17:59So we kind of talk shit all that day and just meeting at that bar and doing
- 1:18:05the check-in at the end of the day and everybody hanging out and having beers and just chilling.
- 1:18:09That's, that's honestly the coolest part of Goose Wars to me. Yeah.
- 1:18:13The coolest part to me is a part of the three of us and we hunt together almost every single day.
- 1:18:20But like the days, right, the days that like Tyler's not here and maybe Kate
- 1:18:26has to work and then or vice versa. And we venture out and kind of hunt with other people, too.
- 1:18:33And then we bring all of those people together for like one last hurrah at the
- 1:18:37end of the year. So we're maybe like Tyler hasn't hunted with somebody yet this
- 1:18:41year that we decide to put on our team.
- 1:18:45It, it kind of just brings the whole group together. And I like that.
- 1:18:50Yeah, no, we always, we always have a good time no matter what.
- 1:18:54Whether it's random people going or not. It's fun to bring new people and it's
- 1:18:58fun to get somebody that hasn't done it very often out there too,
- 1:19:01especially if you get on a good hunt.
- 1:19:02It'll maybe even get them hooked on it and they want to do it long term.
- 1:19:06Yeah. And I feel like this year, like knowing it was coming,
- 1:19:09we kind of saved a little bit more energy than we normally would for that.
- 1:19:13I haven't hunted in the past like three days. Exactly. I'm pretty rested.
- 1:19:17I'm ready to hunt tomorrow. I'm kind of looking forward to it.
- 1:19:19Yeah, no, I'm pretty excited to hunt tomorrow. I'm like.
- 1:19:23You're right. I don't think you could have said it any better.
- 1:19:26Like I'm really excited for goose wars now, but like when we knew that it was
- 1:19:30going to happen, like what, what was it like a month or two ago to have just
- 1:19:34kind of like been waiting and waiting and waiting for it to set that date to
- 1:19:38like finally get all this together and actually do it. Yeah.
- 1:19:41I'm pretty sure everybody gave up on it until I texted you guys last night. I got the date.
- 1:19:47Yep. But no, I think this week everybody goes back to work. I mean,
- 1:19:51we got one more hunt tomorrow, me and you, and then I go back to work Tuesday,
- 1:19:56but maybe not until the end of the day.
- 1:19:58So I might hunt Tuesday morning, but that'd be by myself or maybe some random person.
- 1:20:03Some rando in Iowa waterfowlers or what? You never know. I've been known to
- 1:20:07put up a post. I know. Invite random people.
- 1:20:10And I met a lot of friends that way. I met everybody in Iowa, really.
- 1:20:13I wouldn't know anybody here if it wasn't for probably Iowa waterfowlers,
- 1:20:17honestly. Yeah. So met a lot of people that way.
- 1:20:21I think that about does it for this week, though. I mean, do you guys got anything
- 1:20:26else that you want to add here as we close it out?
- 1:20:29I don't think so. I feel like we did a better job than normal of just touching
- 1:20:32on what we had when it was there.
- 1:20:35Yeah, no, we covered a lot of stuff tonight.
- 1:20:39This is our longest episode. Yeah, today. But I think we're going to have that
- 1:20:44with doing live streams and people commenting.
- 1:20:46Thanks for helping us grow. Look forward to that. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:20:49We do have one more comment that just popped up here.
- 1:20:53Appreciate it, Hunter.
- 1:20:55Thanks for joining in tonight. We're going to wrap this one up.
