- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10You can't escape your own mind. Welcome to What's Your Least
- 0:14Favorite Scary Movie? The podcast where we talk about
- 0:16the good, the bad, the ugly and the absurd and all of our
- 0:18favorite. And least favorite?
- 0:20Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:22movie rightfully has fan base. Always get it.
- 0:25My name is Travis. My name is Jesse.
- 0:27And welcome back everybody. We are talking about Smile this
- 0:32week on the show. Yes.
- 0:34And just a quick housekeeping item, it is most likely that
- 0:37this is going to be what we refer to as a live unedited
- 0:41recording just due to some things that have happened in our
- 0:46personal life, so. Yeah, nothing bad.
- 0:49It's just, you know, scheduling should happen and you know, that
- 0:52just is what it is. So hopefully that's OK with
- 0:54everybody. Yes, we try not to do this too
- 0:57often with our like non bonus episodes just because we really
- 1:01do believe in the quality that we want to put out there most of
- 1:04the time. But sometimes this just happens.
- 1:06So it's either this or no episode this week.
- 1:08So we opted for an episode that might be a little bit raw around
- 1:12the edges than we're typically putting out there, so.
- 1:14It's OK. I think we're gonna do just
- 1:16fine. We'll see.
- 1:16We're. We're talking about a fucking
- 1:18banger of a movie this week. Yeah.
- 1:21So before we get into any of that, though, I do not have
- 1:24polls. Again, Part of our chaotic
- 1:27schedule over the weekend kind of just slipped through the
- 1:30cracks, unfortunately. So that's not a thing that we're
- 1:33gonna be reviewing at the beginning of this episode, but
- 1:36I'll have one out for Smile on Friday, so be.
- 1:40On the SO he says. So I say I could be wrong, I
- 1:43could be a liar right now, but I hope I'm not.
- 1:45That's not the goal. All right.
- 1:49You got any announcements? No, I already did that.
- 1:52OK, well then I guess we just go right in.
- 1:54To smile. Yeah, OK, So Smile premiered
- 2:01September 22nd, 2022 at Fantastic Fest, with its wide
- 2:06release 8 days later at September 30th, 2022.
- 2:11We watched it on Paramount Plus and if you want to watch it
- 2:15right now, you will have to watch it on Paramount Plus or on
- 2:18Netflix, but there's also rental options such as Amazon, Apple,
- 2:23YouTube and Fandango at home. This movie is written and
- 2:26directed by Parker Finn, music by Cristobal Tepia de Vere, and
- 2:32I've got a little snippet for that right there.
- 2:35So does that name sound familiar to you?
- 2:37Can. You say it one more time.
- 2:39Cristobal Tapia de Vieux. Yes, only because the Cristobal
- 2:45sounds familiar. OK.
- 2:47Well you've you've went on a rant about this guy with me
- 2:50personally. I don't know if other people
- 2:52share this, but he's the guy that did the White Lotus theme.
- 2:58I didn't go on a rant. You went on season threes.
- 3:01Yes, because season threes was not so good, but some of that
- 3:04was due to Greg White interfering and being apparently
- 3:07kind of a little bit of a menace towards Crystal Ball.
- 3:10But I don't know, there's a lot of stuff going on behind the
- 3:12scenes. Listen, if you guys are
- 3:14interested, just like deep dive into the White Lotus subreddit.
- 3:18But no, the first season, absolute banger.
- 3:21Second season, some people think it's the best version of the
- 3:24theme. You disagree.
- 3:25I disagree, I like the Hawaii season but this one what we were
- 3:30getting in the runtime just was not hitting.
- 3:34If you listen to the full version on YouTube it sounds
- 3:36pretty good. See people, this is what I was
- 3:38talking. I didn't go on a rim, but here's
- 3:41a rim. I am not alone in how
- 3:44disappointing that because we didn't have the woos.
- 3:47Yeah. And we said that it's in the
- 3:48extended. Version yes.
- 3:50Yeah, I knew that that was gonna get a reaction out of you just
- 3:53because of that. I think he kills it in the
- 3:55soundtrack for this one. I saw how he actually did some
- 3:58of this stuff. I think he also did some of the
- 4:00noises for the monster and he had these like, really, really
- 4:03weird instruments. I don't even know what I would
- 4:05call them. Like I'd never seen them before
- 4:07in my life. Yeah, it was like a whole like
- 4:1010 minute segment of like, no commentary, nothing.
- 4:12It just like was like a camera of his little studio and he was
- 4:16just making sounds. That's cool.
- 4:17It was pretty neat. I appreciate it.
- 4:20Special effects makeup. We have two teams here.
- 4:22We have Amalgamated Dynamics who did the practical effects and
- 4:26the Artery who did visual effects.
- 4:28I feel like we've heard of amalgamated effects.
- 4:31Sounds familiar. They had talked about they some
- 4:36of the people that does some of the design work on the the
- 4:39monster at the end of this movie or the demon, I guess if you
- 4:42wanted to call it that. They made mention of Pumpkinhead
- 4:46being one of the things that they worked on, but it's not
- 4:48Stan Winston that did this, so I don't know.
- 4:52Could have been people that worked on that team.
- 4:54Tremors. Tremors.
- 4:56That's why I thought it sound familiar.
- 4:57OK, so yeah, it was a solid team right here.
- 5:00All right, so starring Socie Bacon as Rose Cotter, Kyle
- 5:04Garner as Joel, Jessie T Usher as Trevor, Robin Wiegert as
- 5:09Doctor, Madeline Northcott and Gillian Zinzer as Holly.
- 5:14OK Jesse, time for her favorite show or game on this show live
- 5:19episode. Game show.
- 5:21Yeah, time for her favorite game on this show.
- 5:25Budget or budget? Welcome to every fucking TV.
- 5:30Or not to be Travis. We, I know, we say, you know,
- 5:34you can't really hold it over me now after you've fucked up here.
- 5:38No, that'll be true once I fuck it up like 3 more times.
- 5:41OK, well, I'm keeping count. All right, So what's your guess
- 5:44here? You think it's budget or bug
- 5:45Ted? Budget being 10 million and
- 5:48above I. Think it's high bug Ted.
- 5:51High bug, Ted. Well, this movie is $17 million.
- 5:56Wow, I didn't think Kyle Gallner was allowed to be in a movie
- 5:58that was considered budget. Did he, I mean.
- 6:01I feel like he's an indie darling.
- 6:02Nightmare on Elm Street was probably butchered.
- 6:06Maybe not. I don't know.
- 6:07They didn't really throw a whole lot of money at those remakes.
- 6:10I didn't. I don't know that movie it.
- 6:13Doesn't matter, he's in it whether you.
- 6:15Like it? I forgot how it's gone.
- 6:16There's a piece of cinematic history there with.
- 6:18That I forgot he was in it. He's a sad little limo kid again
- 6:23I. Was going to say that's his role
- 6:25in Jennifer's Body. Yep, Yep.
- 6:27All right, Opening box office 22 million Worldwide Gross 217
- 6:32million Wow. IMDb 6.5 out of 10.
- 6:36Really. I actually I'm surprised.
- 6:39I thought it would have been even higher than that.
- 6:41Yeah, I thought, I mean that I guess that kind of feels right
- 6:44it I see a lot of people like this movie, but I think the more
- 6:47I looked into it, the more I saw some people were on it.
- 6:51OK, Yeah, but I have three other movies that released in 2022
- 6:55that. Dude, 2022 is a banger of a
- 6:57year. How on earth?
- 6:59What? What kind of a theme did you
- 7:01come up? With well OK there I I could do
- 7:042 themes because today on connections they did 2022 horror
- 7:08movies and smile was one of them.
- 7:09So if we're talking about as was.
- 7:11Pearl. Yeah, as was, Yeah.
- 7:12So Pearl, Scream and Nope were on that list, but I have a whole
- 7:17other list here. I have a theme, and the theme is
- 7:20other things you can do with your mouth.
- 7:24Yes, Jesse, raise your eyebrow. That's right, baby.
- 7:28All right, So movie #1 talk to me.
- 7:32Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:34Which is actually really funny because it's more of a hand that
- 7:37you have to use, but then that invokes like 80s, nineties talk
- 7:41to the hand. That's true.
- 7:43Yeah. So Talk to Me came out October
- 7:4630th, 2022. That was the premiere date.
- 7:48It actually had it's wide release in 23 I believe, or
- 7:52maybe 24 I can't remember. It was, it was in August, I
- 7:55remember because we saw it on your birthday.
- 7:56That's true. So 23 probably Budget of 4.5
- 8:00million worldwide Gross 91,000,000 IMDb 7.1.
- 8:04Yeah, I know a lot of people love that.
- 8:06I I am in the minority. Yeah, I didn't really talk.
- 8:09About it at some point. Yeah, we will.
- 8:12Movie #2 Swallowed that release. I haven't.
- 8:15Even heard of that. I hadn't either.
- 8:18I've heard of swallow, but I've not heard swallowed all.
- 8:21Right. I'm going to continue to be a
- 8:22contrarian, and I'm going to say that you don't swallow with your
- 8:25mouth, you swallow with your throat.
- 8:27OK, well I guess you can be like a little downer here and just
- 8:31fuck up my theme here that I worked really hard to try and
- 8:34piece together. Good.
- 8:35Enough, apparently. So anyways, that movie released
- 8:38June 4th. Before these stretches.
- 8:40Jesse, this is not even that big of a stretch.
- 8:43You need How you going to swallow without your mouth?
- 8:46How's it going to get in there? It has to go into the mouth for
- 8:48it to be swallowed. You don't swallow with any other
- 8:53orifice. Orifice.
- 8:56Yes, that's what I said. I mean feeding tube would just
- 9:00go like you don't need the mouth for it.
- 9:02Yeah, but you're not swallowing shit.
- 9:03It just gets like put into you whatever.
- 9:06Anyways I released June 4th 2022.
- 9:10Don't have budget or gross but it's a 5.3 on IMDb.
- 9:13What's? It about I.
- 9:14Have no idea the I think it was like vampireship.
- 9:19OK, I could be wrong I don't know.
- 9:21It's been a week. Yeah, it really sounds like
- 9:23you're just making. I I gathered all this
- 9:25information days ago, so I I forgot.
- 9:28So the final one is Speak No Evil that is the original 1, the
- 9:33non James McAvoy one that released March 17th and it had a
- 9:38bunch of 3.2 million worldwide gross 377,000 IMDb score of 6.6.
- 9:45I just have to point out that something that you would not do
- 9:49with your mouse because it's speaking no evil.
- 9:53Well, I'm it's an action still. I'm speaking no evil with my
- 9:56mouth. I'm speaking good shit.
- 9:58I'm speaking good shit. I'm not speak no evil, speak
- 10:01good. You do speak good, honey.
- 10:04Thank you. OK, let's do some tag lines.
- 10:10Let's do some tag lines. All right, so the tag line on
- 10:12the poster, once you see it, it's too late.
- 10:16That's true. That feels although, like,
- 10:19that's one of those tag lines that it like feels really good,
- 10:21but then you're like, this feels like it could apply to a ton of
- 10:24horror movies. Yeah, it can.
- 10:26And also it's not too late. You can still survive this thing
- 10:30if you see him. Yeah, you just have to be a cold
- 10:32down by driver that's. True.
- 10:34Yeah. All right #2 pass it on.
- 10:39Yeah, I like that. It's like a little like passing
- 10:41notes in the classroom. Again, and there were a lot of
- 10:46similarities between this and it followed is that I clocked this
- 10:49time because we just watched it follows last.
- 10:52Weekend. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I could get
- 10:54that too. It's like that.
- 10:55It follows in the ring is really like influential on this.
- 10:59I feel the new face of fear. That's a good run.
- 11:04Yeah, that's a good run. It's a scary face.
- 11:07I'll give them credit there. It's not the derpy :) from.
- 11:10Truth or dare? Yeah, and the final one, what
- 11:13makes you smile? That one's kind of lame.
- 11:17Yeah. So it's whatever.
- 11:20All right, so that's it for the tag lines.
- 11:23Let's get into some fun facts. Do it.
- 11:26So I gotta watch it for this. So this movie is actually a
- 11:32follow up to Parker Finn's short that he did in 2020.
- 11:36It's called Laura Hasn't Slept. It stars Caitlin Stacy, who is
- 11:41the girl Laura from the opening of this movie.
- 11:43Same girl. It's not a direct sequel,
- 11:47though. I feel like I originally thought
- 11:50that, but it's more of like a parallel, same type of
- 11:52character, same actor, same name and everything.
- 11:55They just told it, retold it and smile in the opening instead.
- 11:59But this one has Lou Temple as her psychiatrist and that, yeah,
- 12:03I thought that that was kind of neat.
- 12:04That's only going to be in maybe a few people like him.
- 12:06I like him because he was really nice to me at Scarefest.
- 12:09When I was I think you're forgetting the popular allure of
- 12:12The Walking Dead. Oh yeah.
- 12:14Is he a big character in that? I know he's in it, I just
- 12:16didn't. Have no fucking clue but people.
- 12:18I feel like people can name the minorist of characters in The
- 12:22Walking Dead at this point. You're you're right.
- 12:24Yeah. So this movie was originally
- 12:27planned to be a Paramount Plus release.
- 12:29However, it has such strong test screenings that they decided
- 12:33they were going to make it a theatrical release.
- 12:35All right? The original title was going to
- 12:37be Something's Wrong with Rose. Paramount spent about $50
- 12:41million promoting this movie. They concocted a marketing
- 12:47campaign that it was a it was a the weekend.
- 12:50It was like, yeah, it was like viral.
- 12:51They had people showing up at like baseball games and.
- 12:54Stuff, It was a weekend before they released the movies when
- 12:56they did it. And this one was really cool
- 12:58because I'm a big baseball fan. And I remember when this movie
- 13:02came out, like, there were people, like, there are people
- 13:04smiling behind the umpire. Like, what the fuck is going on?
- 13:06And I went back and I already watched the footage of that, and
- 13:09it is pretty creepy. But they have them like, wearing
- 13:11like, these neon signs and it's just like, smile written on
- 13:15there and undershirts. And yeah, it was a really
- 13:17effective marketing campaign. So the original intent for the
- 13:22story here is it's basically a nightmare from Rosa's
- 13:26perspective that gradually escalates throughout the film.
- 13:29They used Parker Finn, used personal fears as influencers
- 13:33for this. So the first one was mine being
- 13:36against you, and the second one is nobody believing you.
- 13:40And it's essentially just turned trauma into a curse that pursues
- 13:44you throughout the movie, is what he was going with here.
- 13:46Which is, you know, I would say kind of what trauma is anyway.
- 13:51Yeah, that's true. And they, I was watching like a
- 13:54behind the scenes feature thing for this and they were really
- 13:56like going in on the trauma aspect of it.
- 13:59And then this movie is very upfront about the trauma.
- 14:02Like they outright mention that. It's not like subtext or
- 14:04anything in this movie. It's like straight up.
- 14:06Text, yeah. Rose is in every single scene of
- 14:09this movie, by the way. There's not a scene without her.
- 14:11Damn Sosie. I know it's pretty impressive.
- 14:14People spoke really highly of her too.
- 14:16You know, obviously this is Kevin Bacon's daughter, so she's
- 14:20had some experience. She got that sizzle.
- 14:22She got that sizzle, she got that nose.
- 14:25She does exactly like Kevin Bacon.
- 14:27Just always think of Rodger from American Dad with the the the
- 14:31nose. Oh my God, it's a monster.
- 14:34It's the star of the hit movie Monster.
- 14:39So it was shot mostly with wide lenses, even on the close up
- 14:43shots. It did this to allow the
- 14:45environment to breathe a little bit and you keep your eye on the
- 14:47background. That way you're just, you know,
- 14:49kind of like it follows where you're always looking for.
- 14:52Things and I'm going to tell you guys it was effective because
- 14:55there were a couple of times that Travis paused and rewound
- 14:58the movie. So he's like, wait, I'm trying
- 14:59to see. I feel like there's a thing back
- 15:00there. There was a scene where I
- 15:01thought there was a guy in the windows in the garage across the
- 15:05street just staring. And it was just a reflection.
- 15:07I don't think it was a reflection.
- 15:09It was a reflection. It was a silhouette.
- 15:11This is just. Like us playing Paranormal Ink
- 15:13all over again it. Kind of is, yeah.
- 15:17So they went sets very, very differently.
- 15:22They wanted them to become or like a peer less inviting and
- 15:27they wanted to make the mundane unnerving essentially.
- 15:30So with the hospital, they chose the colors pink and blue because
- 15:36they saw a study that pink is the most calming color.
- 15:39So like, all right, let's take that and let's make it
- 15:41disturbing. Speaking of the hospital, this
- 15:44was shot during COVID and you know, COVID had a really big
- 15:49kind of need for hospitals. What?
- 15:51So yeah, yeah, there was there was a thing that happened.
- 15:53I. Don't remember that.
- 15:54Yeah, apparently hospitals were crazy in demand in 2020.
- 15:58I don't know. I feel like that would have been
- 16:00on the news. Probably should have been well
- 16:03anyways. They lost their hospital last
- 16:06second because of that, because they couldn't allow them to.
- 16:09Film they were going to shoot like on set, on site they
- 16:12weren't. Yeah, they had a hospital.
- 16:14They. Really, they shot this in New
- 16:16Jersey and they wanted this to be like a New Jersey movie.
- 16:20Like they wanted it to feel like that they were talking about.
- 16:22They would see movies that have like ambiguous cities and like
- 16:26they would shoot in different cities.
- 16:28So you never really got a feel of like where you are.
- 16:30And they don't want that to be the case with this one.
- 16:32So they just wanted to, you know, make it very Jersey and
- 16:36they wanted to shoot in the hospital, but they couldn't.
- 16:38So they ended up having to take the limited budget that they
- 16:40have and build a whole hospital set.
- 16:42Listen, did these these guys, these wise guys, did they think
- 16:49they were going to make a Jersey movie with our one Felissa Rose?
- 16:52You know, she could have been in there.
- 16:54She could have been. She's got, I mean, she's got one
- 16:56of the creepiest smiles out there.
- 16:57Yeah. It's like iconic, you know?
- 17:00Like. Yeah, also that makes smile
- 17:03Jersey's plotation the sub genre that we coined on this the show.
- 17:09Oh my goodness, I hope you guys heard that Zoe Meow.
- 17:18I think she also has very strong.
- 17:20Thoughts. Zoe believes that this is a 100%
- 17:23of Jersey's plotation movie. Yeah.
- 17:26So there are a couple of tales when there's a demon present and
- 17:30not a real person that the wardrobe person was trying to
- 17:33do. I love, I love stuff like this,
- 17:36OK? Yeah, it's cool.
- 17:37So it's apparently like the presence of yellow clothing.
- 17:41So you know that scene when Rose goes to the hospital to
- 17:45confront, I think his name was Carl?
- 17:48Yeah, Carl. And the doctor comes in there
- 17:51and, you know, rips his face off, you know, like does that
- 17:54and freaks her out. He's got a yellow tie on.
- 17:56But that following scene when she's in the the parking lot, he
- 18:00goes out there to talk to her and his size green instead.
- 18:03And then there's a scene with Joel where once he's like the
- 18:08demon for her. He has like yellow socks on.
- 18:11And I tried to like keep an eye out for that, but I didn't see
- 18:15it really much with any of the other ones.
- 18:17But maybe it just, I don't know. I think that that may have been
- 18:20them trying to do that and it may not have been achieved on
- 18:25every. Person that was set dressed
- 18:26well, it might have just been really subtle.
- 18:28So it's kind of maybe we need to watch for it.
- 18:31Yeah well, I was trying to watch for it whenever I was cuz I did
- 18:35all this before I even watched the movie with you on last week.
- 18:39Yeah. Would you like to know another
- 18:41yellow fact? Sure, that's Tyra Banks's
- 18:43favorite color. Wow, I'm so happy for her.
- 18:48She's just sharing knowledge. I'm just sharing knowledge.
- 18:52You want to know another yellow fact that's the color of that
- 18:55warrior Wiz? OK, and the final thing, the
- 19:01monster and nightmare mom, that's what they call it her.
- 19:05They were 100% practical. They achieved this through
- 19:11puppeteering and actually like constructing that as like a
- 19:15thing that somebody wore as like a as like a costume.
- 19:20So even that scene when the monster climbs into Rose's mouth
- 19:24is all practically shot. They had a dummy of Rose or
- 19:28saucy bacon created that the person like they just use a
- 19:32creative perspective and they actually like had it to where
- 19:36they could like extend the jaw and he could kind of like climb
- 19:38inside the mouth there for a second.
- 19:40But like ripping the face off and it being like the three
- 19:43faces or whatever on, they're all practical.
- 19:46I'm picturing like the creepy, I forget what they named the new
- 19:51Xenomorph at the end of Romulus. I'm picturing that dude cuz I
- 19:56was a really tall dude in a lot of practical prosthetics and
- 20:00makeup and I'm picturing a similar kind of situation.
- 20:02Yeah, it was really impressive. They got another dude here that
- 20:05was very unique physique to play that role.
- 20:08Yeah. So yeah, that's the fun facts I
- 20:11have for this. OK, All right, so let's do some
- 20:14good, bad, ugly and absurd. And Jesse, you kick it off.
- 20:17What did you like about smile? So I like it, but I'm also sad
- 20:22for the director for this because you can tell it's
- 20:25written by somebody who actually, like, really fucking
- 20:27gets it. Yeah, which it's nice to watch a
- 20:32movie and like feel seen. Like if you if you have like
- 20:39kind of any experiences with mental health and trauma, like
- 20:42it's nice to see it done correctly in a way where you're
- 20:46like, oh shit, like maybe we should go do group therapy
- 20:49together or something. Yeah, it is interesting.
- 20:53I, I thought it also told like an interesting perspective from
- 20:56like Trevor's side, where like he's having to live with
- 20:58somebody that has like these episodes and it's like, it's
- 21:01hard to like, you know, you're trying to help, but like, it's
- 21:05hard to help people like when they're like that and they can't
- 21:08help it because I mean, that's just like they're like dealing
- 21:11with some shit that's really not making them mentally.
- 21:13Well, and The thing is, I think he could have phrased it in a
- 21:16much more compassionate way to her, but I totally get where
- 21:19he's coming from of like, this is beyond my skill level to
- 21:23manage. This is somebody who has
- 21:27potential to become a danger to herself or others, like, because
- 21:30he's just thinking about the fact that their wine glass is
- 21:33gone. Yeah, Those are gone.
- 21:36Mr. Mustache gone. RIP.
- 21:41Like, relationship with the sister that Trevor didn't even
- 21:45really want to see also gone. Yeah, it's.
- 21:50Yeah. So.
- 21:52Fiance. Yeah.
- 21:54He just lost her. Yeah, So like I, I get his
- 21:58perspective. I think he could have been, I
- 22:00think he could have had a little bit more compassion.
- 22:04And I'll probably talk about that more as we go through it
- 22:06because I think he he gives up, he tries nothing and runs out of
- 22:10ideas. You know what I mean?
- 22:11He doesn't try nothing. He tries something.
- 22:13We'll talk about it here in a. Minute I guess.
- 22:15Well, let's go ahead and talk about now.
- 22:18I mean, I I agree with you that I think that he was really
- 22:21shitty with like the way like I woke up your family and I just
- 22:24want to know what kind of crazy I'm getting hitched to.
- 22:26That's a problem. That was bad, however he did try
- 22:29to help by getting her therapist there to try and have like a sit
- 22:32down together that way they could work it out together.
- 22:35My problem is he never had like a respectful answer to what she
- 22:40was saying. And I'm not saying that if
- 22:42somebody comes to you with psychotic delusions that you
- 22:45should absolutely endorse them. But there's a way to do it other
- 22:49than being like, do you need to take medication?
- 22:52Like you can be like, hey, it sounds really scary what you
- 22:54feel like is happening. How about we go inside, we talk
- 22:57about this, and maybe we come up with a game plan that's not
- 23:00necessarily feeding into the delusion, but it's acknowledging
- 23:02like what's happening and then trying to get the person to feel
- 23:06safe and comfortable with you, to be in a safe and comfortable
- 23:09environment. Yeah, I mean, I think that's the
- 23:11right approach. I think if he would have done
- 23:12that in this case, he would have realized, oh, this is not the
- 23:15way to go because she would have been like, OK, he's indulging
- 23:18me, he believes me. And then, you know, that's not
- 23:21really like you don't want to indulge that whole thing.
- 23:23And I think also part of the problem is that she never lets
- 23:26her walls down around him. So he has never had to have any
- 23:30kind of emotional strength in their relationship.
- 23:33Yeah. And that's what I mean, Like, he
- 23:35basically tries nothing. Like, he hears this and he goes,
- 23:37you know what? I looked up bipolar.
- 23:41I'm just assuming bipolar. I'm not actually officially
- 23:43diagnosing. Please don't pick that as a
- 23:44diagnosis. Yeah.
- 23:45Schizophrenia. Well, I don't know based off of
- 23:49like I'm. That's what they were saying in
- 23:51the thing, like they were really heavily like they took
- 23:54schizophrenia as one of the. Oh, I was talking about her mom.
- 23:57Oh yeah. OK.
- 24:01Just kind of based off of some of the things that, like, Holly
- 24:05and Rose were both saying to each other.
- 24:06Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:08That's a. Different thing, yes yeah no no,
- 24:10no. I understand psychotic delusions
- 24:11are a lot more heavily associated with like the schizo
- 24:14disorders. But yeah, so I, I, there's a,
- 24:20there's a big, there's a lot of area in the middle from being
- 24:24like, yes, you're definitely being hunted by a demon to like,
- 24:27hey, I looked up your childhood trauma and I'm going to wield it
- 24:31against you in this moment where you're being emotionally
- 24:33vulnerable with me. Like there's a place in the
- 24:35middle. Yeah, there is.
- 24:39There is you don't have to acknowledge like you don't have
- 24:42to endorse the delusions, but you can acknowledge how they are
- 24:45upsetting to somebody. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:48It's a complex thing, yes. And at least he did try and get
- 24:51help when all else failed. I feel after that, that's when
- 24:54he did give up, which I, you know, I think when you do like
- 24:58something like that and the way that that was I guess received
- 25:05wasn't so well and like she basically broke up with him on
- 25:08the spot there. It's just like, OK.
- 25:11Yeah, well, cuz she was like, you don't actually like me when
- 25:13I'm not doing, when I'm not being perfect.
- 25:16Like she was like, as long as I'm holding it together, you're
- 25:18cool with it. The only problem is we don't see
- 25:20their interactions when they're normal like we only see her
- 25:24pretty much like after that. And I feel like that's fully
- 25:26intentional because we're supposed to see how she can be
- 25:30completely open with Kyle Gallner's character.
- 25:34And he's like the only one who, like, think about the way he
- 25:37reacts to her. No, yeah, that way.
- 25:40I thought he did a good job with it.
- 25:41Yeah, he didn't, like, entertain her right away, but then he
- 25:44looked into it himself and he didn't immediately dismiss it.
- 25:47And he's like, OK, whatever. Like we'll say I necessarily.
- 25:49Believe and endorse. But he listened and he was like.
- 25:52He's like, OK, well. Sounds like you're really upset.
- 25:54Yeah, Let's see. So if this is a thing,
- 25:56basically, you know, like he's like, whoa, whatever.
- 25:59Whoa, Yeah. Please don't take anything we're
- 26:02saying is actual medical advice. I just disclaimer, we're we're
- 26:05just like a disclaimer disclaimer.
- 26:06We're not providing any medical advice here, we're just talking
- 26:08about two movie. Characters, yes.
- 26:11OK. I'm sorry.
- 26:11What else good do you have to say?
- 26:13Or do you have anything else good to say?
- 26:14I mean, that's one of the biggest things about this movie,
- 26:17and it when we first saw the trailers for it, I remember
- 26:21thinking like, oh God, this looks so fucking stupid.
- 26:24And we just kept hearing how good it was and when it came to
- 26:28streaming and we watched it, I think we were both like kind of
- 26:32gobsmacked at how completely different it was from our
- 26:36expectations. This is the thing and I
- 26:38remembered seeing this when this movie was about to come out and
- 26:43I got went back and found the thread, but there was a Reddit
- 26:45thread where a guy that is like a friend of a friend of Parker,
- 26:48he went on to dreading he's like, look, this guy like I know
- 26:52there's a lot of doubts about this movie because of the
- 26:54premise, but. I remember that.
- 26:56Yeah. Like he's like he, he almost
- 26:58kind of put him on. He's like he's in his 30s, OK,
- 27:01like, but like, you know, he's a he's a new director in his 30s,
- 27:05but he like in his. 30s he's never been tested.
- 27:08He's a new director. Premise sounds kind of stupid.
- 27:12This guy was like, just trust. Me, yeah.
- 27:14He was like, this guy's green, but what he has going for him,
- 27:16and he is, he's really good at building atmosphere.
- 27:20And after like going back and reading that, like, you know
- 27:23what? This guy kind of nailed it.
- 27:24Like, yeah, if you think of the premise, it's kind of dumb.
- 27:26But when you actually watch the movie and see the execution, it
- 27:29ends up actually working pretty well.
- 27:32OK, sorry. All right, what's your goods?
- 27:34My goods is, I mean, it's that like the atmosphere, this movie
- 27:38is so, so tense. Like it reminds me of It Follows
- 27:43in the Ring. I mean, especially It Follows.
- 27:45The thing with It Follows that always gets me is like, you
- 27:47never know. Like the sense of that thing
- 27:50following you all the times. It's fucking terrifying.
- 27:53And that's I just kind of want to throw this out there that
- 28:00that is a reality for some people like it going back to
- 28:04them drawing heavily on schizophrenia.
- 28:07It's like a gang stalking thing where people are like under the
- 28:09impression that people are like after them and just constantly
- 28:12like watching them and. Like I can't imagine the
- 28:15absolute exhaustion of just living your life in fear like
- 28:19that. And genuinely believing it to be
- 28:24true, like regardless if it's not true or whatever, like in
- 28:28our objective reality, for a person's subjective reality to
- 28:32believe that and for it to be absolutely true doesn't make it
- 28:34any less exhausting and fear inducing.
- 28:37It's terrifying, Yeah. Honestly, yeah.
- 28:39Like to have to deal with that and like, you know, not even
- 28:43like in this movie, think that it's real and not even think
- 28:45that it's something that you can get treated.
- 28:46Yeah. But this movie does a really
- 28:48good job with that. And that's like, it's just this,
- 28:50it's a basic concept, but I think that they nailed it with
- 28:53this. Like the smiles were really well
- 28:57done too. And like, I think that that's
- 28:58like a really stupid thing to say.
- 29:00Like every one of these people put on a very creepy smile.
- 29:04And I think he knew how to, like, get them to like do it in
- 29:07a way that is just unsettling. Like, it's not like the sinister
- 29:11smile. Like it's somebody's like got
- 29:13the angry eyes, but they're smiling like it's just like this
- 29:16blank almost. Yeah.
- 29:19The only sinister one that I think was really good was the
- 29:21doctors when she like switches to the doctor when she gets the
- 29:26phone call from her. Oh cuz that was the that was the
- 29:29smile entity fucking with me at that point.
- 29:31That one makes my fucking like. Especially like.
- 29:34Bumps. I've got it right now just
- 29:36thinking about it. That one got me the first time.
- 29:38It gets me every other time I watch this.
- 29:40Movie The one that gets me before that is when she gets the
- 29:42call from the security company and the person on the phone was
- 29:45like, Are you sure you haven't already let something in Rose?
- 29:47That one is very creepy, too. Yeah, and that's the thing.
- 29:50I mean, that's what this movie does well.
- 29:51It's like that throughout this movie and it gradually builds.
- 29:55And we were talking about this as we were watching, and this
- 29:57whole thing takes place over 5 days.
- 29:58Yeah, it's a five day. Movie it is.
- 30:00It is absolutely bonkers how much they escalate things in
- 30:03such a short amount of time, in such a like way that draws you
- 30:07in and you're like, this feels like it jumped very quickly.
- 30:09It doesn't feel like it jumps very quickly, but it actually
- 30:11really does. Yeah, I mean, like the story
- 30:14just developed in a really interesting way and it was
- 30:18engaging the entire time. There's not a down moment in
- 30:21this movie and it's not like an action-packed movie.
- 30:24It's not like a lot of like killing and shit going on and
- 30:26it's just like the terror and the dread kind of really carry
- 30:29it all the way through the end. It's not a short movie either.
- 30:32It's almost two hours. Yeah.
- 30:34OK, What's bad for you? So there's one point where she
- 30:38is doing an intake assessment for somebody.
- 30:41I think it may have even been Laura, but it could have been
- 30:43Carl. And she pulls one of those big
- 30:47plastic chairs over next to him. And this was this is how, you
- 30:52know, it wasn't filmed in an actual hospital psych unit.
- 30:55OK. Because those chairs are meant
- 30:58to be super, super heavy, so they can't be thrown and used as
- 31:00a weapon. They got the look of it right.
- 31:03But the fact that she like just went push like you have to, you
- 31:07have to put your back into it to or maybe it's your legs.
- 31:10I don't know what you do when you push.
- 31:11You lift with your legs, right? You lift with your legs.
- 31:13OK, Don't lift with your back. I don't know if you, I don't
- 31:16know if you push with your legs or your back, but you those
- 31:19chairs are heavy is what I'm trying to say.
- 31:20You lift with your back. That's what fucks up your back.
- 31:22Yeah, yeah. So yeah, that was just like a
- 31:25little inconsistency there that I noticed that kind of took me
- 31:29out of the moment. But I I snapped back into it
- 31:31pretty quickly because I was like, I need to not get hung up
- 31:34on this little thing. Yeah, for me, I I didn't really
- 31:40have much bad to say about this movie, but I mean, there were a
- 31:45few occasional cheap jumpscapes that came out here and there.
- 31:49Like when it's Wara, the Ghost of War or whatever, when she's
- 31:54listening to the recordings and there's like the ghost face that
- 31:56like, shows up right beside her and like yells in her ear.
- 32:00I'm a person and I've said this before and I'm sure I will say
- 32:03it again on this on the show. I am OK with a jump scare if
- 32:08it's built up and it's used sparingly and I feel like they
- 32:12were used in a way that they were always effective for me
- 32:14even if I saw them coming. Like I still got a jump.
- 32:17Yeah, I mean, it's not the worst one.
- 32:19I mean, I'm not like a hater of jump scares in general either,
- 32:22but I felt like in comparison to everything else that we got in
- 32:25this movie, when you go with one of those right there, it just
- 32:28kind of like, come on, guys, I know you guys are better than
- 32:30this. Like I have seen all the other
- 32:32shit you're doing. You can do something better than
- 32:33that little cheap gag right there.
- 32:35You know, that's really the only thing I could say bad about this
- 32:38movie though. OK, alright, ugly.
- 32:41Ugly. I think we're gonna, I'm gonna
- 32:44touch on some of the social commentary that's coming from
- 32:46this movie partially in the way that we do treat people with
- 32:51severe mental illness just kind of as a whole.
- 32:53Like think about her sister and brother-in-law talking about
- 32:57like, Oh well, she is just wasting her degree.
- 32:59That is the ugly that too like why are you like?
- 33:02Why else would you become a doctor like?
- 33:03I mean you. Don't have to like, deal with
- 33:06like stinky, sick people all of the time, you know what I mean?
- 33:09Like it's there to be to get rich.
- 33:12That's it. You know, you're not there to
- 33:13help anybody. You just want to make money for
- 33:15yourself. And I think putting Rose, our
- 33:18main protagonist, the person that we're following in
- 33:20literally every scene of this movie, I think putting her in a
- 33:23position that you do see somebody with say, like paranoid
- 33:27schizophrenia in like, that's not a person that is typically
- 33:34widely accepted and understood in society.
- 33:39Yeah. It's such a hard disease to
- 33:43treat. And that's why it's so great
- 33:44that they've started like that. They've developed these long
- 33:46lasting shots because one of the things, especially with things
- 33:50like schizophrenia is that you get on the meds, you start to
- 33:53feel good. Once you feel like you're in
- 33:55control, you're like, oh, I don't need the meds anymore.
- 33:57You come off of them, the cycle starts anew.
- 34:00These long lasting shots are meant to kind of help break some
- 34:02of that cycle. And I think it's just, it's I'm
- 34:05really passionate obviously about mental health.
- 34:08And I think the fact that this movie is commenting on how hard
- 34:15it is and how much people feel like they need to hide what
- 34:18they're going through. Because that like so much of
- 34:21Rose's character is anytime she starts to show any kind of a
- 34:24negative emotion, she immediately goes, Nope, sorry,
- 34:27don't know why I said that. What I mean is, and then she'll
- 34:29like put on her little fake smile.
- 34:30And there's even like 1 scene where she's like shaken up,
- 34:35exhausted, she's been crying and she's just trying to put on like
- 34:39some concealer and she practices a smile so she can go to her,
- 34:42her nephew's birthday party. And I think everything that this
- 34:46movie is trying to say in regards to mental health and
- 34:51societal support and understanding and everything I,
- 34:54I think that's kind of like an an ugly reflection on us as a
- 34:58whole. Yeah, I think you know that.
- 35:00I mean, you kind of had mine in there too.
- 35:02I was really upset with that, you know, discussion with Holly
- 35:05and the husband, Greg, I think it's his name.
- 35:08Yeah, fuck Greg. Yeah, fuck him it was.
- 35:10It's really interesting seeing how Holly and Rose handled like
- 35:14the event differently. They came out like split
- 35:16difference. And I think that was so
- 35:18interesting as well because at first you're just like, what the
- 35:21fuck is Holly's deal? And then you're like, oh, cool,
- 35:24she is completely like compartmentalizing her trauma.
- 35:28Well, she also didn't experience it first hand.
- 35:30She didn't walk in and like, walk away from her mom when her
- 35:33mom was calling, you know, like. I no, she didn't.
- 35:35She didn't witness her her mom's death, but her mom was abusive
- 35:39to both of them. Yeah.
- 35:40And that's what she made note of.
- 35:42She was like, I got the brunt of that.
- 35:44Like, yeah, she wasn't there when her mom killed herself.
- 35:48Sorry for, you know, the trigger warning, obviously for this
- 35:53movie. But you know, she did experience
- 35:56a lot of the abuse early on. Yeah, no.
- 35:59And I'm not denying that. I just, I feel like that's a
- 36:02separate traumatic. Of yeah.
- 36:03To, you know, because like I saw like the theories, which I don't
- 36:07really know if there's much theory.
- 36:08I mean, it makes a lot of sense. The reason that she is the way
- 36:10she is today is because like she, like the whole intro of
- 36:14this movie is she's walking out to leave her office and.
- 36:19She hears that phone call. She can't turn away from the
- 36:23help, somebody needing help, so she goes in there and that's
- 36:26what starts this whole. Thing and that's another thing
- 36:28is that our because us as a society don't take mental health
- 36:32as seriously as we should. Hospitals are underfunded and
- 36:37understaffed and maybe Rose wouldn't feel like she had to
- 36:39work 18 hour days and answer the phone after she's supposed to be
- 36:42leaving and all of that. I think that that was just a.
- 36:45Personal thing on her part, I think that she can't if.
- 36:50They had an emergency intake situation.
- 36:53They should be calling the doctor that's on call for that,
- 36:55not one specific Doctor Who may or may not be there for the day.
- 36:57Oh yeah, I guess somebody did call her for that.
- 36:59Yes, that that's, that's the main thing that like really got
- 37:02to me about that. So I, you know, I think this is
- 37:05also kind of like, you know, that's another nod to like, hey,
- 37:08we, this house, this country is in a mental health crisis.
- 37:11Yeah, OK. Yeah.
- 37:13Well then, what's absurd? The fact that Joel makes point
- 37:18of only having one day off for a week, like in a week, and like,
- 37:23he's doing police work, but it seems like he's doing like
- 37:26police work for Rose even when he's on the clock.
- 37:29Yeah, it just seems like he could just do whatever.
- 37:31I mean, it doesn't seem like they ask questions, you know, I
- 37:34don't know. I'm not a cop.
- 37:36I don't know what the daily duties of a cop usually is, you
- 37:40know, but I think that he's like a, he's the detective I think or
- 37:44something cuz he's like doing a lot of investigating instead of
- 37:48like, you know, the general cop work that you typically see.
- 37:52I think you get a little bit more leeway if you're a
- 37:54detective. Maybe.
- 37:55I don't think so. It seems like maybe they need
- 37:59more detectives if nobody put together this string of people
- 38:03witnessing suicides. So what we've found out is New
- 38:06Jersey is severely lacking in mental health specialists and
- 38:09detectives. Yes, yes, all right.
- 38:12Like there are just so many reports of people witnessing
- 38:15horrific suicides that like, they don't even bother to see if
- 38:19there's any like, commonalities in them.
- 38:23Yeah, my upset thing is the degree of trauma that fucking
- 38:26nephew gets throughout this move.
- 38:28My God. And it almost becomes funny to
- 38:31me. And it shouldn't.
- 38:32But like the kid that the cat is so fucking.
- 38:34Traumatic. That's traumatic, but then later
- 38:37like. Hurts are breaking down in the
- 38:39car and then it just slow pants to the kid watching from his
- 38:42bedroom window. He's just like.
- 38:44It's. Just so fucking funny.
- 38:45It's a funny shot. Best dark humor this decade?
- 38:49Like it's so it's so dark, but you're right.
- 38:52I feel like it's funny. Yeah.
- 38:54It makes me like it gives me joy for some reason, seeing this kid
- 38:59experience that shit right there.
- 39:02OK. What do you rate this?
- 39:039. OK, yeah, I'd give it a nine, 9
- 39:081/2. I think that this is a really
- 39:11strong movie. It really is.
- 39:12Like, yeah, it has no right to be a nine and a half.
- 39:15But it really is, and I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.
- 39:19Spoiler for whenever we eventually cover it.
- 39:21I think the second one absolutely holds the fuck up to
- 39:23this. Yeah, I'm super curious for the
- 39:26third. Yeah.
- 39:27Yeah. All right, so let's get on into
- 39:30it. OK, so we start off with the mom
- 39:37dead on her bed. And she's surrounded by pill
- 39:40bottles, booze, general mess, family photos.
- 39:45Oh, and one of the young girls from those family photos?
- 39:48Yeah, we, we don't know who it is yet, but there's a kid
- 39:51standing there watching it all. But we're assuming it's who this
- 39:55now woman is that wakes up in her office to her phone ringing.
- 39:59She's got to come in, She's got to do an intake assessment for a
- 40:02man talking to himself. And she, she scooches over and
- 40:07she talks to her. She's like, hey, girl, I, I hear
- 40:11what you're saying. And I feel like maybe you're
- 40:12having a manic episode. Maybe we just need to.
- 40:15Maybe we just need to take care of you a little bit.
- 40:17Yeah, poor Carl. I kind of feel bad for him in
- 40:19this movie. I know.
- 40:20That's what I'm saying. I think like if we didn't have
- 40:22this general stereotype of like bipolar, schizophrenia, they're
- 40:28crazy. They're he's fucking going
- 40:30through here. Yeah.
- 40:30He's like, God, most people that have that type of opinion don't
- 40:34know the type of strength it takes to survive that shit.
- 40:37Yeah. So yeah, after she treats him,
- 40:40she's back in her office and she's getting ready.
- 40:42She leaves her office for the day, but as she walks up the
- 40:45door, the phone. Rings.
- 40:46Well, here's the thing. This is a little throwaway line
- 40:50that I feel like it's important to that overarching message.
- 40:52So he calls her up there. His name's Morgan, he's her
- 40:56boss, and he's the department head.
- 40:58And he is like, hey, did you send that patient without
- 41:00insurance to the residency program?
- 41:02And she's like, yeah, she has substance abuse and needed
- 41:06treatment. And he goes, well, you know, we
- 41:09can't do that because we lose money on it.
- 41:10She goes, oh, that's interesting.
- 41:11I didn't think we were for profit.
- 41:13I thought we were here to help people.
- 41:14And he goes, I'm on your side. I just need to know so I can get
- 41:18ahead of it next time. He's like, also, you haven't
- 41:21been here since last night, have you?
- 41:22And she's like, no, yeah. And so he's basically like, you
- 41:30need to go home. And so she's about to leave,
- 41:32grabs her stuff, turns off the lights, The phone rings, rings
- 41:37again, rings the third time she comes back in and she she
- 41:41answers. Yep, and it's Laura.
- 41:44It's a patient. She saw her professor bludgeon
- 41:47himself with the hammer, and she was the only witness to it,
- 41:50apparently. The well and they say that it's
- 41:52an unrelated incident. They brought her in today
- 41:55because she was acting as a public menace and they said she
- 41:59had that separate event a few days ago.
- 42:02Definitely unrelated. Absolutely could in no way be be
- 42:07related to the fact that she watched her professor stick a
- 42:09claw hammer in his face several times.
- 42:11Horrifically traumatic shit, yeah.
- 42:14So she she tells Bros that she sees people that nobody else
- 42:18can, and sometimes they're strangers and sometimes they're
- 42:21familiar faces. And then it smiles and the smile
- 42:26is scary. And then it makes things happen
- 42:28around her. And today, apparently, is the
- 42:31day that I told her that she's going to die.
- 42:34And when Rose, you know, kind of starts to do, kind of starts to
- 42:38do her, Doctor feel, she's like, you don't believe me?
- 42:40She's like, you're not listening to me.
- 42:41You are not listening to what I'm saying.
- 42:43And then she screams and she backs up and then she starts
- 42:46kind of like convulsing on the floor.
- 42:47So Rose calls in a 5051 patient emergency.
- 42:50Is that what it was? No, she uses 5051 later.
- 42:54She just calls for security or whatever to come get her, like
- 42:58restrain her. Yeah, and then, But before they
- 43:01can get there, Laura is smiling at Rose.
- 43:04And then she cuts her throat with a piece of ceramic that
- 43:06fell on the floor. That's another bit like I get
- 43:09that they needed that for you think.
- 43:11They have a vase in there. It was a vase, like it was
- 43:14knocked over. It a ceramic one like that that
- 43:17could so easily be turned into a weapon.
- 43:19Absolutely not. OK No, not in emergency psych
- 43:24intake it. Makes you think.
- 43:31So the cops are questioning Rose.
- 43:33They are not super sympathetic about it.
- 43:37The. Joel's keeping.
- 43:39Joel's keeping mostly quiet. Being like a peacekeeper here,
- 43:41he's like, so she was crazy, right?
- 43:43She was a fucking loony. And she was like, I think what
- 43:46he's trying to say is what was the say of her mental health
- 43:49during this? And.
- 43:50Then, like the other detective space, he was going like COO
- 43:53COO. Yeah, you guys being a fucking
- 43:55Dick, especially at like a mental health hospital.
- 43:57Like don't bring that attitude. Rose gets home.
- 44:01Erica's happy to see her. That's nice.
- 44:04We're gonna. We're gonna hold on to, to Mr.
- 44:07Mustache while we can. She showers, she pours herself
- 44:11some wine in a stainless glass 'cause she's a modern lady.
- 44:15And then she sees Laura smiling in the shadows and she is
- 44:21freaked out. And then a train arrives really
- 44:23fast 'cause that's his thing. And she drops her glass and he's
- 44:27like, whoa, are you OK? And she's like, oh, you know, I
- 44:32had a patient die in front of me today.
- 44:34And then he hugs her and he offers to skip dinner.
- 44:38And she's like, no, no, they already got a.
- 44:40Babysitter, I think he really was like, this is my out right
- 44:43here. You don't have to go see Holly
- 44:45and Greg. Let's like, let's just stay
- 44:46home. Let's not go out and go to
- 44:48dinner. And that's what I mean, Like,
- 44:49he's kind of like halfway sympathetic, but it's because he
- 44:52knows that Rose is doing all of the emotional work for herself,
- 44:55so he doesn't really have to do any of that heavy lifting in
- 44:58their relationship. Like he's like, oh, man, I'm
- 45:00really sorry. Oh, hey, hey, what if I skip
- 45:03dinner? That's more for me than it is
- 45:05for you. But what if I skip dinner?
- 45:06I think that there's nothing bad with that.
- 45:08I don't think he was doing a bad job here.
- 45:10I think he was doing good. I think he was.
- 45:12Maybe I'm a bad husband, but I don't know.
- 45:14I thought that he wasn't doing the.
- 45:15Worst, I don't think he would do that, and I think if you did
- 45:17something like that, I'd call you out on it.
- 45:19What, you like break a glass and you're like a little bit zoned
- 45:22out after telling me that you saw somebody die in front of
- 45:25you? I'm like, OK, do you maybe not
- 45:26want to go to dinner tonight? You know, like I, I don't think
- 45:30that that's. If you thought I wouldn't want
- 45:32to see my sister. Well, I don't.
- 45:35Well, I don't know. It's a different family dynamic
- 45:37here. You know what I mean?
- 45:38I think, I think that the relationship between the two is
- 45:42strained and I think that that's apparent here.
- 45:45Yeah, they get we flat, we pan to dinner, and Holly is talking
- 45:50about just how busy she is with Jackson's schedule, her pilot,
- 45:54like she doesn't have time for Pilates anymore.
- 45:56Oh my God. Oh my God.
- 45:57Jesus. And she's just, she's just kind
- 46:00of going on and on. And then she asked for Rose.
- 46:02We'll be at the birthday party. And she's like, yeah, it's like,
- 46:06I've told you about this a million times.
- 46:08It's on Saturday. She goes, I have to work.
- 46:10And she goes, who works on a Saturday?
- 46:11And she goes, people that work at hospitals, Holly, that's how
- 46:15hospitals work. And then they're like, well, you
- 46:18should quit that. Open a private practice, get
- 46:21that money. Also, can we sell moms to
- 46:23Lapidated House and maybe get some money for that too?
- 46:26Sell the land. They had like, I think that they
- 46:30brought them out to dinner just to talk about this.
- 46:32Yeah, like maybe they do this like once every few months.
- 46:35Yeah, maybe that's why he's like, well, let's get out of
- 46:37this dinner. This, you're out right here.
- 46:38You like, somebody killed themselves right in front of
- 46:40you. You've got it.
- 46:42All right, so we cut to Rose at work the next day.
- 46:44She's got a smelly face mug. No, I didn't.
- 46:47Catch that? I've been looking for like
- 46:48little things throughout this watch of the differences of the
- 46:52smile, and that one was probably my favorite little one.
- 46:54That's cool, little :). Yeah, she asks one of the nurses
- 46:59there for information on War's previous incident.
- 47:03And Joel is there and he's like, oh, it's not a call nearby.
- 47:06So I thought I'd come here, 'cause nobody tracks what I do
- 47:09on my work day. And I just wanted to apologize
- 47:13for things being awkward yesterday.
- 47:15And she was like, why are you here?
- 47:17And he goes, well, 'cause I'm a detective and it's my job.
- 47:20She goes, no, why are you here now?
- 47:21This is not your job. You just said that you were on a
- 47:23call nearby. Yeah, there's history between
- 47:26the two of them. So she is reading Laura's
- 47:28witness statement in her office and then Holly calls her to
- 47:32apologize and her and Rose kind of talk back and forth and she's
- 47:37she tells her that Jackson's really into electric model
- 47:40trains right now. So, you know, that's something
- 47:43to consider. She passes Carl's room.
- 47:48Carl's got a creepy smile here. Yeah, she's.
- 47:50Sitting on his bed at the edge of the bed, just smiling into
- 47:53the hallway. And she goes in to check on him
- 47:55because she thinks maybe he's like, catatonic or having an
- 47:58absent seizure or something. And then he goes, you're going
- 48:00to die. You're going to die.
- 48:03You're going to die. He's got the voice of a
- 48:05comedian. Yeah, and then she calls for
- 48:08help restraining him. And man, those aids like boom.
- 48:14I've been looking for a reason. To get fucking Carl.
- 48:15He keeps telling me I'm going to die.
- 48:17I'm not going to die, Carl. Did they get there and Carl is
- 48:21just like. He's laying.
- 48:22On his bed, chilling. Yeah.
- 48:24So that was like a delusion, right?
- 48:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was that was the monster
- 48:28getting to her. Morgan calls into the office.
- 48:30Like what the fuck was that about?
- 48:31Carl has never hurt anybody. She's like, you've been treating
- 48:34Carl. He's like you've been treating
- 48:36Carl for years and he's not violent, whatever.
- 48:40He's like, you need to take a paid week off and then he says
- 48:44something that I think more people and take notice of.
- 48:46You can't take care of other people if you're not taking care
- 48:48of yourself. True, very true.
- 48:51And it it's something that I am working really hard on my own
- 48:54life to do. But I'm glad that he makes her
- 48:59take this week minimum. Wish he would do more but
- 49:02probably can't spare her for more than a week.
- 49:05So like after this right here, I mistook what was happening here
- 49:08because like we cut to her stopping at a hobby store
- 49:10getting a train. Like she's going to take up like
- 49:12painting model trains. Good for her, good for you,
- 49:14Rose. And then like we cut to her back
- 49:17at her house wrapping up in the birthday and like, oh, it's just
- 49:19for a little fucking traumatized nephew over here.
- 49:23I love that your idea of how the second-half of this movie goes
- 49:27is that Rose just goes really into model trains.
- 49:30You know, it could have been the white.
- 49:32It could have really helped right here.
- 49:35So she is, she's drinking some wine, and she's grabbing it.
- 49:38And then her security alarm goes off.
- 49:40She drops her glass and she grabs some scissors, and she's
- 49:43checking the door. The front door is fine.
- 49:44So she deactivates the alarm. When she gets back in the living
- 49:47room, uh oh. That door is open.
- 49:49Yeah. She gets a call from the
- 49:51security company and, you know, they're checking to see if she's
- 49:54alone in the house. And she's like, I think so.
- 49:56And that's when the, the the woman operator says, Are you
- 50:02sure? Are you sure you didn't let
- 50:04anything in? And then the phone rings again.
- 50:07No. She's like, look behind you.
- 50:08And she, like, slowly turns behind her.
- 50:10And it's the phone. They're, like, still on the
- 50:12stand. Yeah.
- 50:14And it rings again, and then she answers it and it's the
- 50:16dispatch. But this time, it's the real
- 50:18deal. Yeah, so the cops get there,
- 50:22they do a sweep and it's all clear and they are fairly
- 50:25dismissive. Everything like it's clear lady
- 50:28in like there have been plenty of shows that we've watched,
- 50:33like true crime stuff where, you know, the cops come and they do
- 50:37a sweep, but it's not thorough enough.
- 50:39And the stalker person is like, tucked right there, tucked right
- 50:43away. Exhibit A Halloween H2O Yeah,
- 50:46Joseph Gordon Levin did the sweep of the house and Michael
- 50:48Myers is still there. He died.
- 50:51And then, you know, Trevor pulls up all this is happening, and
- 50:55he's kind of like, hey. What's up?
- 50:58He stumbled on like, there were like 10 fucking cop cars outside
- 51:01of his house. Crime scene.
- 51:03Yeah. And he's a little bit too chill
- 51:04about it here. He's like, yeah.
- 51:05So like, what's happening here? Like what's going on?
- 51:08Hey, is this a party? Yeah, and she's like.
- 51:13The alarm went off and he goes, why was it set?
- 51:15And she was like, cuz I live in the middle of nowhere and it's
- 51:17scary. All right?
- 51:18No, she she actually says, I don't remember setting it.
- 51:23Yeah, which I don't think that's too wide.
- 51:26Like people do stuff out of muscle memory.
- 51:27I do that all the time. I walk you out of the house,
- 51:29yes. You do.
- 51:31At least once a week I'm locked out of the house.
- 51:33If we had a security system, I would lock you out of the house
- 51:35and have security on your apps. Every day.
- 51:37Yeah, You said that I would be in Trevor's position for sure at
- 51:40some point. Like I'd be like, why are all
- 51:42these cops here? Yeah.
- 51:43Oh, and mustache is missing. Yeah, on top of it, everything,
- 51:47she can't find her Kitty cat and she's so like, she can't even
- 51:49listen to Trevor talk about whatever he's talking about.
- 51:52She's like, have you seen mustache?
- 51:53She's not coming for food. Yeah, I guess shots of her like
- 51:56doing a little like Jingle some food outside calling his name
- 51:59right he come. She comes in, he goes.
- 52:02Did you break another glass? Yeah.
- 52:06So Rose wakes from her mom nightmare once again and she
- 52:10listens to the it's the middle of the night.
- 52:13So she listens to the interview tape with Laura and she hears
- 52:17something being whispered. So she goes back several times
- 52:19to listen to it and it's her name being whispered.
- 52:22And that's where we get that jump scare that you were
- 52:23mentioning before. And she freaks out.
- 52:27She grabs some some scissors from the butcher block on their
- 52:31counter and Trevor comes out and he's like trying to calm her
- 52:34down but she's it. We don't even see how She
- 52:37eventually calms down, but she's like freaked out.
- 52:39Yeah, so the next day we see she's meeting with her
- 52:43therapist. She she draw like, she does this
- 52:50thing where she's, like, basically diagnosing herself.
- 52:52She's pulling all of the, like, therapy, speaking on herself.
- 52:55She's like, I understand I witnessed this suicide, and I
- 52:59drew parallels to my mother's own suicide.
- 53:01But what I'm really here for is a prescription for Risperdal.
- 53:06And her therapist is like, what? And she's like, yeah.
- 53:10Let's not do with that. She was like, no, it's just like
- 53:13I'm seeing things, but it's no big deal.
- 53:14It's no big deal. It's just, it's just stress.
- 53:16It's just stress induced and she's like, let's maybe schedule
- 53:20some more appointments, Let's start doing this regularly again
- 53:23and talking about things. Let's not self diagnose.
- 53:25How's that sound? So let's wait at least a week
- 53:28until we give you any of them. Yeah, and she's like, she's
- 53:31like, honestly, you don't like sitting here talking to you?
- 53:33You don't seem psychotic. No.
- 53:35So. So we're now at the nephew's
- 53:38birthday party. He is opening his presents and
- 53:42it's time to open Roses Presents and he finds Mustache's body
- 53:47inside the present. This is such a hard scene to
- 53:50watch because Rose immediately like, loses it because she
- 53:55realizes that she's lost her cat.
- 53:56She realizes that she is completely losing her grip.
- 54:00Yeah, and now she thinks everybody thinks that she's a
- 54:02cat killer. Yeah.
- 54:03And like puts it in her nephew's present.
- 54:06And she's so like, she's so distraught at both of these
- 54:09things happening at once and getting this judgement from
- 54:11people who don't understand. She backs up and falls into a
- 54:13glass table and then like her arms are just tore up.
- 54:17That's excessive. The fact that they're like, I'm
- 54:19going to take this character, I'm going to make her do this
- 54:21and she's going to fall through a glass table like.
- 54:24Damn, man, this guy said. Yeah, Parker Finn said.
- 54:26Fuck Rose. Fuck this girl man.
- 54:29I bet he watched Titanic growing up and he was like after all
- 54:35that, after all that, that old bitch is just going to throw
- 54:38that moment into the ocean. Fuck.
- 54:40Rose. Yeah, that's Rose we.
- 54:41Never should have been there. I don't know his name in the
- 54:45movie. Jack.
- 54:49Jack Yeah. OK, We got Joel.
- 54:52We'll take it. Jack could be a nickname for
- 54:56Joel. Sure, I'll allow it.
- 54:58It's a nickname for John, and that makes less sense.
- 55:01I didn't. I've never heard that it is so.
- 55:05She also sees like a lady smiling at her there.
- 55:08One of the moms, yeah, yeah. So Morgan comes to check on Rose
- 55:12while she's in the ER and he's like I like him as a boss cuz he
- 55:16like he seems like he actually genuinely cares about her as a
- 55:19person. That's so kind of crazy that the
- 55:21boss comes out to check on an employee in the emergency room,
- 55:25even if they're not like, you know, they, they don't seem to
- 55:29be like friends outside of work. Yeah, but she's at work.
- 55:33She's there as a patient. No, it's the same hospital.
- 55:36No, I thought she was at like the ER or something because she
- 55:38fell through a table. No, she works in the ER at the
- 55:40hospital, just like the psych unit.
- 55:43I thought it was like its own mental hospital.
- 55:45OK, well, that's different. Yeah.
- 55:46OK, OK. Yeah, if you like, look, when
- 55:49they're like in the hospital parking lot later, you can see
- 55:52signs for like general ER psych eval, like things like that.
- 55:57OK, well, she's there. She sees Trevor and Holly
- 56:00arguing out in the hallway. Yeah.
- 56:03And Morgan is like, hey, are you OK?
- 56:05I just want to check on you. And she starts to say something
- 56:07and she goes fine. Yep.
- 56:10So in the car ride back to home, she's with Trevor and she tells
- 56:14Trevor pretty much everything that she's experiencing and he
- 56:18does not take it well. Yeah, he's like, I can't do
- 56:21this. Yep, he's like you have
- 56:22inherited your parents mental illness.
- 56:25I can't do that. I can't be hitched to that type
- 56:28of shit. Shit, man.
- 56:30And then we cut to him sleeping on the couch and Rose is in her
- 56:34bed and she's looking up the location of the college that the
- 56:37professor that killed himself. Professor Muniz Munoz Munoz.
- 56:43And she's she tries to go to sleep, but then like, it's just
- 56:46like her mom is there in the hallway talking that or the
- 56:48entire time. So she visits the late Professor
- 56:52Muniz's wife, who talks about how he had changes right before
- 56:57his death. And she shows him, she shows her
- 57:01his studio where he did like a lot of drawings and paintings of
- 57:04what it was he was seeing, which were like all of the different
- 57:08demon iterations, one of them being his brother, who had died
- 57:11several years beforehand. And, you know, she, she said
- 57:16that Gabrielle saw someone kill herself.
- 57:20And this gets Rose's attention and she's like, wait, what
- 57:22happened? Like, I need to know everything.
- 57:23And then as soon as she realizes that Rose believes that all of
- 57:28this is real and not that Gabrielle was just really sick,
- 57:31like she told her to get the fuck out of her house.
- 57:33Yeah, she she was under like, the guise of like being a
- 57:36reporter. Or something like that.
- 57:37Yeah. So Rose pays a visit to Jewel
- 57:40and asked him to look up other reports on Munez.
- 57:45And there was one from a week before his death where he was a
- 57:48witness to a woman named Angela Powell who committed suicide.
- 57:54Angela Powell, if you guys haven't seen this movie, she
- 57:58also saw somebody else commit suicide.
- 58:00And they actually have the security camera footage of what
- 58:05happened. And this dude at a gas station,
- 58:07like, you see him, he's just like doing normal gas station
- 58:10things. Then all of a sudden he's like
- 58:12and he goes over to like a landscaping truck and takes out
- 58:14some head shears and like looks at Angela and he's like, Hey,
- 58:18Angela, I don't know your name, but we're in Jersey.
- 58:20There's a good chance that you're Angela.
- 58:22Hey, Angela, Angela Baker. And then I just Yep, Yep.
- 58:29So she rose astral for printouts and he's like, what?
- 58:35He's, you know, the Nacho, the Nacho skit.
- 58:39And I think you should leave. Like, that's Joel the whole
- 58:41time. Yeah.
- 58:42What? What?
- 58:44Yeah, he's like looking at further cases there too.
- 58:47And he finds the image of one of them.
- 58:50I think it was that woman's murder or suicide.
- 58:53And she like insists, so like look at it and she basically
- 58:57just like gouched her eyes out and.
- 58:59Shit, yeah. Yeah, it's pretty gnarly.
- 59:01So at home, Trevor's there with the therapist and she fights
- 59:05with him and calls him on his shit.
- 59:08And then she's like, I'm going to go talk to Holly, go talk to
- 59:11my sister. That would be better, Yeah.
- 59:13That would be a much better conversation.
- 59:14She's like, it's way unethical for you to just show up here.
- 59:18Doctor. Therapist.
- 59:19I didn't write down her therapist's name.
- 59:21Northcutt. Something like that.
- 59:23Northcott. OK.
- 59:25It's just like, it's way unprofessional for you to be
- 59:27here. Trevor, we're done.
- 59:29Is that really like a bad thing? Like to like have like a
- 59:32intervention type thing. Like my wife is like really or
- 59:35my fiance is like really having some crazy psychotic episodes.
- 59:41And I think that I need somebody that's better equipped to deal
- 59:44with this present. I don't know.
- 59:46I didn't. I never finished my counseling
- 59:47degree, so I don't know if that would cross the ethical
- 59:50boundaries. I just I think to.
- 59:51Me, I think it's iffy. I think that that's probably a
- 59:54good way to handle that. As somebody that's not not a
- 59:58psychiatrist, I'm sorry. So she gets to Holly's house and
- 1:00:04she is dude. She is doing a shit job of
- 1:00:07explaining everything. But she, I mean, she's being
- 1:00:09upfront about it all. She's just sounding like she,
- 1:00:12you know? Because she's starting in the
- 1:00:14middle. She's like all of these people
- 1:00:15have seen each other kill each other or kill themselves and
- 1:00:18she. Started off with Holly's like
- 1:00:19I'm cursed. Yeah, I'm cursed.
- 1:00:21And they're like, yeah, that's you don't start there.
- 1:00:24Like you, you slow build. Yeah, you.
- 1:00:26You do The story as we have watched it unfold in the movie.
- 1:00:30Yeah, exactly. Yeah, like start from.
- 1:00:32Seeing one but Holly, she she's explaining the what what the
- 1:00:40fuck is this? Oh, she's explaining the trail
- 1:00:42to Holly and Holly is like you are breaking down.
- 1:00:45You are having the exact same kind of breakdown that mom had
- 1:00:49and she's like I can't be around you like this.
- 1:00:53I had to get away from mom. I cannot be around this type of
- 1:00:56behavior and I will not let you be around Jackson with this type
- 1:00:59of behavior. Do you realize how messed up he
- 1:01:01is? He's traumatized for life
- 1:01:04because of that fucking stunt that you pulled.
- 1:01:06So Rose goes back to her car and she's sitting there trying to
- 1:01:10collect herself, and Holly comes back out and then it's not
- 1:01:15really Holly. It does this.
- 1:01:18It kind of looks like a little clown guy over there with his
- 1:01:20broken neck. That's essentially what happens.
- 1:01:24There's a scare that we saw in a movie on Shutter.
- 1:01:28It's a Shutter exclusive, I can't remember the name of it
- 1:01:30but it was that Spanish horror movie which I had like ghosts in
- 1:01:35it too that had a very similar jump scare.
- 1:01:37Was this right here? No, not possession.
- 1:01:41You know what I'm talking. About yes.
- 1:01:42Where like the like woman runs to the car with her head upside
- 1:01:45down just like this. Yeah.
- 1:01:47Yeah, OK. Like I, I just think of that
- 1:01:49every time I see this scene. What?
- 1:01:51I don't know the. Movie that's going to drive me
- 1:01:52crazy that I can't think of the name.
- 1:01:53It's something that I I feel like could easily be confused
- 1:01:56for another. Movie yes it's no, because it
- 1:01:58does have a very similar name to another movie and that's why oh
- 1:02:01I. Almost got it.
- 1:02:04Is it? No, it's not the terrified.
- 1:02:08No, yeah, you're right. Terrified.
- 1:02:09OK, OK. That's.
- 1:02:10What it's called that's. I'm glad that you remember that.
- 1:02:13I was like, no, because it was. It's very similar to something
- 1:02:15of a completely different town. Well anyways, she has a
- 1:02:20breakdown because of this and poor old nephew sees it from his
- 1:02:23bedroom up there. I don't know why, but every time
- 1:02:26I see this kid on the screen I just think Nicolas.
- 1:02:29He has Nicolas. He's got Nicolas energy.
- 1:02:32Nicolas. Nicolas.
- 1:02:37So Joel calls her and he has found 20 related cases, one of a
- 1:02:42guy who killed to survive. Yes, and that was the only
- 1:02:46change in the pattern. But right after that, it went
- 1:02:50back to how it was. And she was like, cool, let's go
- 1:02:53talk to this guy. And so he takes her to the
- 1:02:56prison and basically, like, does a little cop to cop, like, hey,
- 1:03:01we're just going to, like, gently violate his rights.
- 1:03:05Also on the strip up this is where Joe kind of like she tells
- 1:03:09Joe everything and he kind of accepts it and they mention like
- 1:03:13none of them have survived past a week and Rose is currently on
- 1:03:17day 4. Yeah, I don't know how much he
- 1:03:19like, fully believes believes, but he thinks something's going
- 1:03:21on for sure. Yeah, he thinks it's like a cult
- 1:03:23type thing. Probably, yes.
- 1:03:24Like he's open to something happening.
- 1:03:27Not sure about the curse part, but like, he's like something
- 1:03:30fishy is happening. Yeah.
- 1:03:31Something's rotten in the state of Denmark.
- 1:03:34Yeah. All right, so yeah, now at the
- 1:03:38prison. Yes, yeah, Cop to cop.
- 1:03:41They're like, we can violate his rights for about 10 minutes.
- 1:03:44That's all we can do. So they get back there and the
- 1:03:48guy's like, listen, I will talk to Rose and Rose alone.
- 1:03:50Get the cop out of here. Respect, yeah.
- 1:03:54And he's like, listen, what you got to do is you just got to
- 1:03:56kill. You got to kill somebody.
- 1:04:00And it's got to be in front of somebody else.
- 1:04:01It's got to be as fucked up as possible.
- 1:04:03And Rose has told him that this was for a patient of hers.
- 1:04:06Yeah, he's like, it feeds off of trauma.
- 1:04:09So you have to cause trauma on somebody else.
- 1:04:11Somebody else has to be present. And he starts giving all like
- 1:04:14ideas of how to make it as fucked up as possible.
- 1:04:17And she's like, I can't kill somebody.
- 1:04:18And he goes, it's you. Why the fuck are you here?
- 1:04:22I got away from it. You need to get away from me.
- 1:04:24I get it. Turn around.
- 1:04:25Yeah. And just walk away.
- 1:04:27You don't have to look at it here.
- 1:04:28If you don't look at it, you don't see it.
- 1:04:30You don't get affected. Well, yeah.
- 1:04:35Yeah, So she's back at home. No, I think it's.
- 1:04:41So this is, it ends with him like yelling at her, screaming
- 1:04:44at her guards, running in. And Joel asked what happened.
- 1:04:47And Rosa's like nothing. And I just think that's
- 1:04:50important thematically for Rosa's character.
- 1:04:53Like all this kind of shit happens and she just will not
- 1:04:57share that with anybody. And the one time she does when
- 1:05:00she's talking about this curse, nobody believes her.
- 1:05:03And it's just important to note. OK, Yeah.
- 1:05:06So yeah, she gets home, she gets a call from Doctor Northcott and
- 1:05:10she gets a text from Trevor and she's kind of ghosting them
- 1:05:12both. But then the doc rings her
- 1:05:15doorbell and was like, hey, kind of a not cool stunt I pulled
- 1:05:20before. But I do need to come in and
- 1:05:23have you convince me you're not a danger because you and I both
- 1:05:26know how mandatory reporting works, even in Jersey.
- 1:05:29And so she's like, OK, fine, come on in.
- 1:05:33And she says basically that she feels like it was a mistake to
- 1:05:37confide in Trevor and that she should have known he wouldn't
- 1:05:39believe her. And then, interestingly, she
- 1:05:43gets a call from Doctor Northcott.
- 1:05:45I like that the the doctor is like, well it's just like a
- 1:05:49blank phone. Call.
- 1:05:49Yeah, it's just ringing. And she's like, don't you want
- 1:05:51to answer that? You should probably get that.
- 1:05:54Yeah. And then she does, and it's Dr.
- 1:05:56N's guys like, yeah. So like, I'm really sorry.
- 1:05:59And just basically like the conversation from before that
- 1:06:02fucking smile on that. Oh my God.
- 1:06:04It's so fucking creepy. Man, that's one thing.
- 1:06:09I think that if they would have maybe undone the like demon
- 1:06:14voice, I feel like the demon voice is a little bit too much.
- 1:06:17It's almost borderline truth or dare ish right there, yeah.
- 1:06:22So Rose goes to the hospital with a knife up her sleeve.
- 1:06:27Literally. Yeah, literally up her sleeve.
- 1:06:29And she goes to Carl's room. Why Carl?
- 1:06:32Why, Carl? I don't fucking know.
- 1:06:33Like there could be like more violent people there.
- 1:06:37Probably. She wanted somebody that
- 1:06:38wouldn't fight back, basically. Yeah, well, and he starts
- 1:06:41panicking, and Morgan comes by and he's like, hey, you're not
- 1:06:45supposed to be here right now. And then she makes sure that
- 1:06:47he's looking. And then she stabs Carl, and
- 1:06:50Carl's like, why? And Morgan's like, why?
- 1:06:53And then they start like ripping themselves open.
- 1:06:56Carl's recycled. Was Carl a demon too?
- 1:06:58I think Carl's actually. I think she actually killed
- 1:07:00Carl, didn't she? No, because she never actually
- 1:07:02got out of her car. Oh yeah, you're right.
- 1:07:04Yeah. And then Morgan, like, rips his
- 1:07:06face off. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:08She wakes up in her car, and the real Morgan is there, and he's
- 1:07:10like, hey, are you OK? Seize the knife in the front
- 1:07:14seats. Like, how about you come in with
- 1:07:16me? Yeah.
- 1:07:16Like. And he, like, really tries to do
- 1:07:18it in a way where he's like. It's pretty obvious he panicked
- 1:07:20a little bit. Yeah, Come in here.
- 1:07:22Come, come hang out. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:07:23We want you to go, but actually come here.
- 1:07:25Come stay. And she drives off, and he is
- 1:07:27calling in to the cops, like, as she's driving off.
- 1:07:30Yeah. And she goes to because she
- 1:07:32realizes she has an epiphany in this moment that she just can't
- 1:07:35have any witnesses around her. Yeah.
- 1:07:37So she goes to the source of all her trauma, which will surely
- 1:07:40not feed into the trauma demon. And she goes to her mom's house.
- 1:07:46Joel calls when she gets there. And he's like, hey, there is an
- 1:07:49APB out on you, so what's up? And she's like, I have to be
- 1:07:55alone. And then I won't pass it down
- 1:07:57the chain. And I'm not going to tell you
- 1:07:58where I'm going. And fortunately for me, we had a
- 1:08:03past relationship. And I'm denying the fact that I
- 1:08:06ever got closer to you than I've gotten to anybody else.
- 1:08:08So you won't be able to figure out where I went.
- 1:08:12Sure. So she flashes back to her mom's
- 1:08:18suicide and like what you said before her closing the door on
- 1:08:22her mom thinking that it's another one of her mom over
- 1:08:26dramatizing. I think that she made a
- 1:08:28conscious decision. She even admits to it.
- 1:08:30You're like, I let you die because I was scared of you.
- 1:08:34That's what she says. I just don't think it was that
- 1:08:38simple, especially for her at that age.
- 1:08:41Maybe we may be, but the. But The thing is, we'll never
- 1:08:44know. And, and the point, the point is
- 1:08:46that Rose puts all of that blame on herself either way.
- 1:08:49Yeah, that's the main point. That's why she does what she
- 1:08:52does for a living. She finds a kerosene Lantern and
- 1:08:56battens the hatches and of course the thing appears and it
- 1:09:01presents as her mom crying on the bed, accusing her of not
- 1:09:05calling for help and and she says that her mind is so
- 1:09:10inviting and then the thing grows and starts following her
- 1:09:16through the house. Mommy monster's scary.
- 1:09:18Yeah, and she says you can't escape your own mind.
- 1:09:21And then Rose is like, well, neither can you.
- 1:09:25Yeah, bashes mommy monster in the head with a Lantern and this
- 1:09:30ignites mommy monster and just basically.
- 1:09:32I am not loving the phrase mommy monster.
- 1:09:37I love that title. I am uncomfortable.
- 1:09:39So mommy monster. Anyways, she just goes up in
- 1:09:42flames and she burns to death and Rose exits the house and the
- 1:09:47house burns and she thinks she's.
- 1:09:49Done it. All we are missing to know that
- 1:09:52this is a false happy ending is the.
- 1:09:56Just like it. Yeah.
- 1:10:00Yeah. She drives home and she thinks
- 1:10:03that she's done it. She doesn't drive home, she
- 1:10:05drives to Joel's. Apartment.
- 1:10:06Oh yeah, she drives to Joel. She's like, listen, you're the
- 1:10:08only person I've ever been honest with, and that's really
- 1:10:10cool, but I don't like having my walls down.
- 1:10:12So I was kind of a shit to you and I'm really sorry about that.
- 1:10:15I'm sorry for all of the emotional labor I've put on you
- 1:10:17the past few days. And I'm sorry that I'm about to
- 1:10:18ask this, but can I sleep here? And also, will you watch me fall
- 1:10:22asleep? He's like, yes, he's.
- 1:10:24Like this is all I've ever wanted, yes.
- 1:10:26Yes, yes. And one day.
- 1:10:29Off. Then she realizes that she's
- 1:10:34still in the front yard of her house.
- 1:10:36Yeah, yeah. Well, Joel turns into.
- 1:10:38The Smile Demon and. Chases her out of the door and
- 1:10:40she walks out of Joel's door and then walks out of the childhood
- 1:10:45home instead. And holy shit, that's a mindful.
- 1:10:49That's got to be so deflating. And it's still standing.
- 1:10:52It hasn't burnt down like she thought it had.
- 1:10:54And Joel arrives and he's actually real.
- 1:10:57He is for really real. And she's like, Oh my God, you
- 1:11:01can't be here. And she locks him out and the
- 1:11:04thing comes for her and mommy. Monster mommy Monster comes
- 1:11:09back. Mommy Monster stops me at Mommy
- 1:11:11Monster because it peels back the skin and is just like smiles
- 1:11:15all the way down. Oh yeah, yeah, it's creepy.
- 1:11:18Yeah, you know how like sharks have rows and rows and rows of
- 1:11:20teeth you've. Got rows and rows of face.
- 1:11:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I like to imagine each face is
- 1:11:26like a face of one of the ones that's absorbed that'd.
- 1:11:29Be interesting. That's how I picture it.
- 1:11:31Maybe we need to when we watch the second one.
- 1:11:34Like we need to compare the number of mouths.
- 1:11:37It's a bigger creature, Yeah, by the time it's in the second.
- 1:11:40One I want to count. There should be at least 19
- 1:11:43mouths in this one. In this one, yeah.
- 1:11:45And we need to count how many are in Smile too.
- 1:11:48OK, that's going to be a tough task.
- 1:11:50It's not really. We just have to like pause it
- 1:11:52and count. I understand you're an
- 1:11:53accountant and so that might be tricky for you, but I know how
- 1:11:56to count at least to 20. I thank God one of those stuffs
- 1:12:00anyways. The The demon crawls into Rose's
- 1:12:03mouth at this. Point does it crawl in and does
- 1:12:06it like step in? It crawls.
- 1:12:07In OK like pries open. For some reason I'm picturing it
- 1:12:11like prying in and then like. Nothing, that's how.
- 1:12:15That's how I would do it if I was a demon.
- 1:12:16Well, that's OK. That's how I put on a dress and
- 1:12:20then where you know what I mean, like.
- 1:12:22Well, it's the same thing I guess.
- 1:12:23Yeah, well, Joel busts down the door and he runs in looking for
- 1:12:28Rose. Yeah, so we've explained how
- 1:12:29Rose actually dies, but what Joel sees because he can't see
- 1:12:33the monster yet. I think this is how Rose
- 1:12:36actually dies. She just sees possessed and.
- 1:12:39Stuff. Yeah, we saw the possession.
- 1:12:40Yeah, that's right. And he busts in and he sees Rose
- 1:12:43covered in kerosene and with the box matches.
- 1:12:48And she lights herself on fire and he knows.
- 1:12:51It's like it's happening to me right now.
- 1:12:53He knows that he is fucked. I like how it ends not on a
- 1:12:57direct shot of Rose burning, but on.
- 1:13:00I like just. Watching him and watching.
- 1:13:01It yeah. And his, like face, yeah, during
- 1:13:04the entire time, he's like, God, this person is dying in front of
- 1:13:08me. But also this means that I'm in
- 1:13:10some shit. Yeah, it's it's really good.
- 1:13:14It's really good acting on his. Part Yeah, he did a great job.
- 1:13:17They all did a great. Job Yeah, This this is a movie.
- 1:13:19There's no weak performance. And that's how the movie ends.
- 1:13:25Dude, you know what? You're right 9.5.
- 1:13:28OK well my change would be the tone down the jump scare and
- 1:13:34tone down the demon voice. Make it like a real person ish.
- 1:13:39I think that that's more sinister than fake demon filters
- 1:13:42thrown on. Make the emergency psych eval
- 1:13:46intake room realistic. OK, OK, I was gonna say it's
- 1:13:52really only specific to people like you, but you know, this is
- 1:13:55your input here, so it's valid. But yeah, and like I said with
- 1:14:00this movie, this feels like a movie for people who can really
- 1:14:03get it. And I feel like those details
- 1:14:05matter. That's true.
- 1:14:06That's true. So Talia was, she was really
- 1:14:11fucked up by this movie. This scared her so bad.
- 1:14:15She was barking, she was licking between us.
- 1:14:18She went and she was like, I need my my emotional support fan
- 1:14:21right now. And she when the evil doc came
- 1:14:27to the house, Talia started barking.
- 1:14:29Yeah, she knew it was she. Did she?
- 1:14:31Knew she was like barking at the whole time.
- 1:14:32She was like Rose. Don't let her in.
- 1:14:34Well, yellow is one of the few colors she can see.
- 1:14:37Yeah. So she's like.
- 1:14:38Maybe she did catch it. Maybe she's like.
- 1:14:40Maybe. Right.
- 1:14:41So I think Talia, I think Talia is gonna have this 10.
- 1:14:44She was she. Was very.
- 1:14:45She was locked in, yeah. So his ultimate warrior?
- 1:14:48I mean, do we need to say it's fucking mommy monster?
- 1:14:54That's because that's how Zoey acts when she wants to be fed in
- 1:14:57the morning. Yeah, she like.
- 1:14:58She's a mommy monster. She, like, gets up in your face
- 1:15:01and, you know, pins you down. It's like all right, feed me.
- 1:15:03Yeah. Except in this case, it gets in
- 1:15:06the mouth, but she wants you to put something in her mouth.
- 1:15:09Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 1:15:11Who did you relate to? I hate to say it, but I feel
- 1:15:15like I related to Rose in a lot of ways, you know, take took my
- 1:15:19trauma and tried to turn that into a couple different
- 1:15:22psychology degrees. I have a real bad habit of
- 1:15:26saying I'm OK when I'm not OK. Yeah, you know, there's, there's
- 1:15:31unfortunate amount of things I can relate to.
- 1:15:34I don't have a cat named Mustache, but we do have a cat
- 1:15:37with a mustache. Yeah, yeah, we did have we, we
- 1:15:40have a mustache cat around here, man, I I don't know.
- 1:15:50I don't know who I relate to in this.
- 1:15:56I've stepped up for Trevor a couple of times here.
- 1:15:59You know what? You're better than Trevor.
- 1:16:01I don't think Trevor did that bad.
- 1:16:03He had some shitty moments, I won't give you that.
- 1:16:05I just don't think that Trevor was that bad of a person.
- 1:16:08I don't. Think he was terrible, but I
- 1:16:09also don't think like, I think he had a lot of maturing to do.
- 1:16:13If you had a episode or crisis like she was having, I would
- 1:16:18probably do the same thing and get like professional help.
- 1:16:22I would hope that you would be more empathetic towards me
- 1:16:25first. I would be more, I'm a mixture
- 1:16:28of Joel and Trevor there. I would be more sympathetic for
- 1:16:32you and I would try to. I wouldn't tell you you're crazy
- 1:16:34or full of shit or that you're fucked or anything like that,
- 1:16:37but I would try and get you the help and be comforted.
- 1:16:41I'm OK with that. Yeah, like get me the help that
- 1:16:43you think I need, but also like, don't be an ass about it.
- 1:16:46OK, I'm going to blend them. I'm good.
- 1:16:49Jover. Jover Joel ever sounds like a
- 1:16:55fucking porn. Tanges.
- 1:16:58I'm Joel. Ever.
- 1:17:00You got rid. You got rid of the more
- 1:17:02important half of the night. OK, well.
- 1:17:09OK, what would? What would Dom?
- 1:17:14Do. What would Dom do here?
- 1:17:19If you guys want WWDD bracelets, let us know and we'll see if we
- 1:17:23can make that merge happen. Yeah, what would?
- 1:17:30Jeez, how Dom can't outdrive this fucking thing.
- 1:17:34He can't drive away from mental health.
- 1:17:37Dude, no, he listened. He's like, you know what?
- 1:17:40Challenge it to a race. And then like, he'd just be
- 1:17:43staring the demon down like, you know, like they do.
- 1:17:47Yeah. And then the demon will see the
- 1:17:50absolute like singular focus and Dom's mind and it will self
- 1:17:56implode. I'm just picturing that's
- 1:17:58perfect. Actually, I think that that
- 1:18:00would that's a good way for him to do something.
- 1:18:02I'm just picturing a scene of him and like the garage and
- 1:18:06somebody's like, don't you like see the smiles at you all the
- 1:18:09time is like when I'm in the garage, everybody's smiling.
- 1:18:12He'd be like. Everybody smiles in the garage.
- 1:18:16I watched my dad die and it was trauma, but I found family after
- 1:18:20that. So my my family, my love for my
- 1:18:23family is stronger than my trauma.
- 1:18:25And the monster would be like, oh.
- 1:18:27Fuck, he also has, you know, John Cena like in a fucking tech
- 1:18:31advanced jet that can just pick him up.
- 1:18:35But then again, it could be a delusion and then he, like, you
- 1:18:38know, winds up he's just in his garage instead.
- 1:18:41No, maybe the Fast and Furious movies haven't been a delusion
- 1:18:44this entire. Time.
- 1:18:44No, no, what we find out is that he thinks that his brother has
- 1:18:48gone on to become a wrestler who is like a babyface for several
- 1:18:53decades and then all of a sudden had a heel turn and Dom's like,
- 1:18:56no, what are you doing? And it turns out the heel turn
- 1:19:00was actually. It's all on his side.
- 1:19:02It's all on the fuck with him. Yeah.
- 1:19:03Oh. My God is the monster messing
- 1:19:05with him man. It's just John Cena smiling.
- 1:19:10At the end we just see John Cena like hugging the monster and
- 1:19:13he's just. It's like a similar shot to like
- 1:19:16Joel looking at John Cena. We just see like Vin Diesel's
- 1:19:19face, like in like terror. Yes.
- 1:19:22OK. All right.
- 1:19:27Well, tagline, tagline. That's tough.
- 1:19:38It'll turn your frown and your world upside down.
- 1:19:42That sounds like something from a trailer.
- 1:19:44That does sound like something from a trailer.
- 1:19:54This is tough. We're treating this as a live
- 1:19:57episode, so I can't. Really.
- 1:19:58Yeah, you can't do the normal legs.
- 1:20:06Say cheese. No.
- 1:20:12Just so quick to dismiss. It that's for pictures.
- 1:20:16From the people who brought you Joel.
- 1:20:19Ever. There were there were more than
- 1:20:24one of you to come up with that. Yeah, takes two people to make
- 1:20:28Joel ever Joel and Trevor. I've been called Trevor plenty
- 1:20:33of times in my. Life you have.
- 1:20:34That's the number one name people go to when they can't
- 1:20:37remember your real name. The second one is Tyler.
- 1:20:39Yep. Whatever man, we'll just go with
- 1:20:43yours. I I can't do this shit on the
- 1:20:44live thing here. It's too much pressure.
- 1:20:46Too much pressure. Yeah, unless, unless we have an
- 1:20:49immediate like, fucking yeah. Like I, we're gonna be sitting
- 1:20:53here way too long thinking about this OK Dream sequel though.
- 1:20:57Dream sequel. Oh man.
- 1:21:00I love what they did with the sequel in this movie.
- 1:21:02I thought that that was like the like a fantastic way to take it.
- 1:21:06Because some of the things that I did really well was it did not
- 1:21:09re explain everything to us. Like we cut to the one guy
- 1:21:14telling her like let's. Not spoil any of the sequel
- 1:21:17stuff for people who may not have seen it.
- 1:21:20Yeah, they and it picks up right where the sun leaves off and it
- 1:21:25deals with more mental health stuff this time talking a lot
- 1:21:28about substance abuse, but also talking a lot about like some of
- 1:21:32her own suicidal ideation, which I think is super relevant.
- 1:21:36Well then, yeah, I guess you can take like another another thing
- 1:21:40like that, like a health epidemic or whatever, a mental
- 1:21:45epidemic. And you know, I don't know,
- 1:21:48there's all kinds of like mental health disorders out there that.
- 1:21:51This is really sad and this is going to really fuck me up to
- 1:21:54say this out loud, but like I think another thing that tends
- 1:21:57to not be super well understood is like dementia or
- 1:22:01neurocognitive disease. Oh my God dude seeing like that
- 1:22:04makes. Me feel really sad to think
- 1:22:06about that movie existing. But that's you know what?
- 1:22:09You're right. That'd be very upsetting.
- 1:22:10But like that. Would be people wouldn't believe
- 1:22:13the person. We don't, I think even like you
- 1:22:17could touch on like how distorted things are.
- 1:22:21Like, you know, it doesn't even look like a smile at you
- 1:22:23anymore. Yeah, as they like progresses
- 1:22:25throughout the movie. Yeah.
- 1:22:27And then like, maybe, God, this is fucking me up to say this
- 1:22:32maybe have like some actual real delusions and confusion mixed in
- 1:22:36there with the demon. Yeah, I know this is a bummer.
- 1:22:39This is the worst thing I've ever.
- 1:22:41Seen no, no, this is actually I think that like it's a very it's
- 1:22:45a very dark idea, but I think that it touches that like the
- 1:22:48heart of like what they're getting at with this is like,
- 1:22:52you know, taking that type of stuff serious and I think that
- 1:22:55would be an effective story. It would be a sad story, but I
- 1:22:58think it would be a really good. 1 And I think it all comes back
- 1:23:01to what you said about him being afraid of being betrayed by his
- 1:23:04own mind and not being believed by other people.
- 1:23:06And that is, in an essence, that's what mental health is.
- 1:23:12Well, yeah, OK. I think that would be a good
- 1:23:14sequel. It would be a good sequel.
- 1:23:16It would just be a very, very sad and disturbing.
- 1:23:18One I say mental health, mental illness.
- 1:23:20But yeah, yeah, same, I guess. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:23OK. All right, well, how is about we
- 1:23:27move on over to some reviews. OK, if you're ready.
- 1:23:35I'm going through my William Shatner face right now.
- 1:23:39Yes. Oh boy.
- 1:23:40OK so I have a review on IMDb. It's a 3 out of 10.
- 1:23:46It's title. I am old and dislike everything
- 1:23:52all right. Smile is everything I hate about
- 1:23:56modern horror. A plot hijacked from the 90s,
- 1:23:59obsession with westernizing J horror, CGI blood, herky jerky
- 1:24:02cameras and over reliance on jump cuts, interstitial drone
- 1:24:08shots and so many sins against my personal cinematic rules.
- 1:24:13Sure I love Jess Franco, Jean Jean Roland, Bruno, Mattel, Joe
- 1:24:19D'amato and direct to streaming Amityville movies and have no
- 1:24:22taste, but I still know a movie that has no mirror whatsoever
- 1:24:25when I watch it. A longer version of director and
- 1:24:29writer Parker Finn's war hasn't swept.
- 1:24:31This is a total. This is totally a short stretch
- 1:24:33to feature length and all of the issues that brings.
- 1:24:36That same Laura Weaver is a patient of Doctor Rose Cotter,
- 1:24:39and she hasn't slept since she watched her art professor kill
- 1:24:42himself after an entity haunted him through the smile.
- 1:24:45OK, whatever. We don't have to go through a
- 1:24:46recap of this. You've seen it all before.
- 1:24:49There's a reason I never read the full review, people.
- 1:24:52You've seen it all before, but at least this one had a fun ad
- 1:24:55campaign of smiling people showing up on TV and smiling
- 1:24:58through news shows and baseball games.
- 1:25:00Does the protagonist have a cop boyfriend still in love with
- 1:25:02her? Yes.
- 1:25:03Does she have a curse that she has to pass on?
- 1:25:06Yes. Does a toy with hope with the
- 1:25:10hope of a happy ending only to pull the rug?
- 1:25:12Yes, Derek Riggs, who created Eddie for Iron Maiden, once told
- 1:25:17me that someone smiling was the most unsettling visual.
- 1:25:20He's right. I wish he could also have
- 1:25:22explained to these film makers how to make a better movie, not
- 1:25:25so rely on cliches. But then again, people have been
- 1:25:28quick to enshrine this, along with other movies that really
- 1:25:31aren't that special, like the Like It Follows and The Babadook
- 1:25:342 Very simple movies is that simply aren't anywhere near as
- 1:25:37wonderful as people hunting for seem.
- 1:25:40Something to evangelize empty notions of film that would
- 1:25:43barely register were so many truly dreadful horror movies
- 1:25:47being made. In the Kingdom of really dumb
- 1:25:50movies, slightly stupid ones have become king.
- 1:25:54I will agree on a couple of things.
- 1:25:56I do think that it makes use of tropes and cliches, which I
- 1:26:00yeah, there's there's something. Wrong with tropes and cliches.
- 1:26:04I think that's like a very important thing in movies.
- 1:26:06You don't have to always follow. Yeah, like.
- 1:26:08You know, break mold. Sorry.
- 1:26:10I did forget about this but I did.
- 1:26:13I agree, I don't like the upside down under stitch hill shots.
- 1:26:17What is that exactly? I I like those like little in
- 1:26:20between shots where we'd see like the the horizon flipped
- 1:26:24upside down. It happened a couple of times
- 1:26:27and it seemed meaningless when it happened.
- 1:26:30Yeah, it's just arty more than anything.
- 1:26:31It's like a thing of that era. Midsummer does some of that too,
- 1:26:35you know, like, oh, it's just like.
- 1:26:37A Midsummer does it like one time though, as they're entering
- 1:26:41into into the Horga. Yeah.
- 1:26:44Did they not Village? Did they do it a lot of times in
- 1:26:47this movie? I didn't.
- 1:26:47Yeah, it was like 3 * I. Think I wouldn't call it a herky
- 1:26:51jerky camera though. I don't think it's herky jerky.
- 1:26:54I just yeah, no, those interstitial shots, I will agree
- 1:26:57with the guy on that. I I don't know, maybe it's a
- 1:27:00case of one of those that like it got too over hyped before he
- 1:27:03watched it. I guess.
- 1:27:05But like, I mean, if you don't like it follows like, yeah, I
- 1:27:08don't know. I just don't.
- 1:27:09Think it just seems like that's not his type of movie.
- 1:27:12But he likes to ring. I don't know, I it's confusing
- 1:27:15to me. I don't know, I I just, I don't
- 1:27:17think he likes modern cinema. Seems like him I.
- 1:27:20Just I think he's not really a fan of like the new wave of
- 1:27:23like. He's old and doesn't like this.
- 1:27:25Yeah, he's, he's upfront about it.
- 1:27:27I, you know, I mean, really that's it.
- 1:27:29Like things like different camera styles and, you know,
- 1:27:34movies have a like a very feel for when they are made.
- 1:27:37And I guess he's just not into this current decade or whatever.
- 1:27:41Did we have any listener reviews?
- 1:27:42We did, yeah. So I asked what you'd rate it on
- 1:27:48our thing there, and I got a answer from Marnie, who says 9
- 1:27:51out 10. So that's pretty good.
- 1:27:54Did we get AY no. We get AY for that one, but I
- 1:27:57do. Ask people for.
- 1:27:58AY, no, I literally just said rate it so that they they did
- 1:28:02their homework right there, they did the assignment and that's
- 1:28:05that's perfect. Ward Zombie however did write
- 1:28:07out a review guy he says. I like this movie and the hot
- 1:28:11take. I liked it more than Smile too.
- 1:28:12This one really captures the overall sense of trauma.
- 1:28:15The smile monsters putting out good creepy scares and fake
- 1:28:18outs. Really good movie.
- 1:28:20Yeah, I think, I think it captures two different, two
- 1:28:24different inner demons between the two movies.
- 1:28:28Yeah, it's a little bit different.
- 1:28:29I need to rewatch Smile too, because I it's been a while
- 1:28:32since we've seen it. Yeah, but yeah, no, man, it's
- 1:28:36tough. I can't tell you one way or
- 1:28:39another. I think I would have to rewatch
- 1:28:41Smile 2 again to be able to tell you which one I like more.
- 1:28:44But I think that they're both very strong movies.
- 1:28:47Smile 2 might be better. Might be OK.
- 1:28:52All right, Well, I guess that that's it for this week's
- 1:28:54episode. Thanks everybody for listening
- 1:28:58and participating in all the stuff like reviews and if we had
- 1:29:01a poll, you know, polls too. But we like to thank you guys
