Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cardinals shutout in Pittsburgh, what happened to the offense?
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: On our most recent episode of Cardinals Territory, Bernie took
- 0:08Speaker 1: an oath to be even keeled and level headed no
- 0:12Speaker 1: matter what happened in the next couple of weeks with
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Saint Louis Cardinals, after they spent the weekend with
- 0:18Speaker 1: their most dominating series sweep their series win of the
- 0:21Speaker 1: season in my opinion, over the Cleveland Guardians.
- 0:23Speaker 2: They came to Pittsburgh and Bernie, you said, no matter.
- 0:26Speaker 1: What happens, I'm not gonna I'm gonna try not to overreact.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And the Cardinals must have heard you and took that personally,
- 0:31Speaker 1: because not only swept by the Pirates, they did not
- 0:34Speaker 1: score one single run over the last three days in Pittsburgh.
- 0:38Speaker 2: It was not fun. Morale pretty low right now, Bernie,
- 0:42Speaker 2: what are you thinking?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Well, first of all, I'm thinking with the attitude I'm
- 0:47Speaker 3: going to have on this edition of Cardinal Territory, that
- 0:50Speaker 3: all of the people you're subscribers that say, oh, I'm
- 0:54Speaker 3: so glad you have Bernie on there, You're probably going
- 0:57Speaker 3: to get a different kind of opinions because I'm actually
- 1:01Speaker 3: really cool headed about this. You know this, this team,
- 1:07Speaker 3: you know, has played fifteen games in the last fourteen
- 1:10Speaker 3: days and they won nine out of the They went
- 1:12Speaker 3: nine and six. I realized that the Pirates made them
- 1:18Speaker 3: look really, really bad. There's no excuse excusing the offensive
- 1:22Speaker 3: performance in particular. But this Pirates team actually destroyed a
- 1:28Speaker 3: Mets team that has the three hundred and thirty million
- 1:31Speaker 3: dollar payroll in the three games before the Cardinals came
- 1:35Speaker 3: to town. So even though the Cardinals have lost five
- 1:38Speaker 3: out of eight, I mean, we can parse this.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Any way you want. I mean, their overall.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Trend is good, but the offense is almost hopelessly inconsistent.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And that's a fact more than an opinion. And they're
- 1:54Speaker 3: a beat up team right now. And I know a
- 1:56Speaker 3: lot of fans, Katie, and it's okay, man, People can
- 1:59Speaker 3: can can you know, believe what they want to believe.
- 2:02Speaker 4: They don't want to hear about the tough schedule.
- 2:03Speaker 3: They don't want to hear about players being banged up,
- 2:06Speaker 3: and it is true that that's the reality for all teams.
- 2:08Speaker 3: But I think the Cardinals went into Pittsburgh at a
- 2:11Speaker 3: bad time because the Pirates, in case people haven't noticed,
- 2:14Speaker 3: and by the way, I don't think a lot of
- 2:15Speaker 3: people have noticed because when km Wax the other day,
- 2:18Speaker 3: we had people, you know, commenting, it's.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Like, well, you know, they're ownly going to play the Pirates.
- 2:25Speaker 4: The Pirates. The Pirates are.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Like twenty three and seventeen since May twenty They're actually
- 2:32Speaker 3: a really good club right now. So no, the sky
- 2:36Speaker 3: is not falling, but I wish they would stop getting
- 2:40Speaker 3: shut out.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yes, I think two things can be true here. One,
- 2:44Speaker 1: the Pirates can be on a heater. They just won
- 2:46Speaker 1: six straight. They've looked really good against the Mets, they
- 2:48Speaker 1: looked really good obviously against Saint Louis. And another thing
- 2:51Speaker 1: that could be true is that the Cardinals are banged up.
- 2:53Speaker 1: We'll get to that later in the show. And they
- 2:55Speaker 1: didn't play well this series at all. I mean, they've
- 2:58Speaker 1: pitched well to out of three games. Onder Tante was fantastic,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Sonny Gray good start up until the end. And you
- 3:03Speaker 1: know what, talks to Brendan Donovan after the game, and
- 3:05Speaker 1: here's what he said, And it was as simple as
- 3:07Speaker 1: it gets. He said, we sucked, we didn't score any runs.
- 3:12Speaker 1: We're on to Chicago. That's all I got. And of
- 3:15Speaker 1: course he expanded past that, but I thought that was
- 3:17Speaker 1: a very appointment and to the point opening statement. They
- 3:21Speaker 1: sucked in Pittsburgh. They did not score any runs. It
- 3:23Speaker 1: was maddening, it was frustrating. They were without Olonarnado for
- 3:26Speaker 1: two games, no Wilson Contreri's for a game and a half,
- 3:29Speaker 1: no Lar's Newt Bar for a game. That were lying
- 3:31Speaker 1: on a bunch of guys right now that don't have
- 3:32Speaker 1: a lot of pop, and they just got out played.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So what do you do? You flush it, because if
- 3:38Speaker 2: you dwell on this series.
- 3:39Speaker 1: For as good as the Cleveland one was, the Pittsburgh
- 3:42Speaker 1: pretty bad, you have a super important series ahead starting Friday.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I'll tell you, though, Bernnie, these guys are absolutely meeting
- 3:49Speaker 1: that off day on Thursday. But I'm with Donnie. They
- 3:52Speaker 1: were really bad. It wasn't fun to watch. It was
- 3:54Speaker 1: super frustrating. You flush it and you move.
- 3:57Speaker 4: On, and they've they've gone through this speed four. I mean,
- 4:01Speaker 4: they were. They were really bad early in the season.
- 4:04Speaker 3: They lost a bunch of games in a short stretch.
- 4:06Speaker 3: They had that six or seven game losing streak. When
- 4:10Speaker 3: was that late May early June. I guess the Cardinals
- 4:14Speaker 3: have been you know, in the in the gutter a
- 4:20Speaker 3: few times this season, and they always respond and so
- 4:24Speaker 3: I'm going to assume that they're going to respond again,
- 4:26Speaker 3: because there is a tenacity this team that I admire
- 4:29Speaker 3: and that doesn't go away because they got their rear
- 4:32Speaker 3: ends kicked in Pittsburgh, you know, and after all again,
- 4:36Speaker 3: I realized nobody wants to hear this.
- 4:38Speaker 4: It was a three and three road trip.
- 4:40Speaker 3: I mean, you know, but yeah, I will say this though,
- 4:45Speaker 3: getting shut out in you know, five of your last
- 4:49Speaker 3: eight games probably not good.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I had a note that I put on X I.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Fed some red meat to the people's The two thousand
- 4:58Speaker 3: and four Cardinals team got shut out four times in
- 5:01Speaker 3: one hundred and sixty two games. This Cardinals team just
- 5:04Speaker 3: got shut out five times in a week. But that
- 5:07Speaker 3: other team had a bunch of Hall of Fame talent.
- 5:09Speaker 3: That's the difference.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, it was pointed out to me
- 5:13Speaker 1: by one of the members of Cardinals PR because I
- 5:15Speaker 1: missed the Cleveland series. He said, Katie, did you know
- 5:18Speaker 1: that you're approaching forty nine innings without seeing the Cardinals
- 5:20Speaker 1: score a run in person? And I looked at him,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and that's maybe the most depressing stat I've heard all week.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And we joked about this, Bernie, we joked about it.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I said, the Cardinals always play well on the road
- 5:28Speaker 1: on the trips. I'm not there, And I jokingly said,
- 5:31Speaker 1: I did not think this was actually going to happen.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Watch him get swupped by the Pirates. I didn't think
- 5:35Speaker 2: that was a legit possibility.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I also thought they would score more than one singular
- 5:40Speaker 1: run in three games, and they didn't do either of
- 5:42Speaker 1: those things.
- 5:43Speaker 2: So bad series. I thought their.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Overall approach was fine given who they lacked in the lineup.
- 5:48Speaker 1: They did hit a lot of balls, they put a
- 5:50Speaker 1: lot in balls and play. They went two for twenty
- 5:52Speaker 1: three with runners in scoring position collectively through the series,
- 5:54Speaker 1: so that's not going to play. But I didn't think
- 5:58Speaker 1: there was anything different with the approach. I didn't think anything,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know. I thought they were more or less the
- 6:01Speaker 1: same hitters. They just were missing three of their best hitters.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So not great. Not a good top series for Donovan
- 6:08Speaker 1: in the leadoff spot.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So jac is going through it right now, Gorman coming
- 6:12Speaker 2: back to Earth.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Yeah, what can he do?
- 6:16Speaker 2: You move on?
- 6:17Speaker 3: You know, And and again my point isn't like pick
- 6:20Speaker 3: on certain players. But in addition to the guys that
- 6:23Speaker 3: are they're banged up you know, Donovan went into this
- 6:27Speaker 3: game seven for his last forty nine. Berlasen went into
- 6:30Speaker 3: this game five for his last thirty six. Contreras, his
- 6:35Speaker 3: numbers are down for the season. You know he'll be
- 6:38Speaker 3: on a He's on a pace to have like his
- 6:40Speaker 3: worst full season offensively since twenty eighteen. He's still a
- 6:43Speaker 3: good hitter though, don't get me wrong. You know we
- 6:46Speaker 3: all wanted to Jayce up here and again not dumping
- 6:49Speaker 3: on the kid, but he hasn't done anything since they
- 6:51Speaker 3: were called him and who else I haven't you know,
- 6:53Speaker 3: had some notes here and I don't want to go
- 6:55Speaker 3: nuts with him, oh Lars Newtbar since you know, May
- 6:59Speaker 3: the first is hitting two two with a six thirty ops.
- 7:03Speaker 4: So my point is these are the guys.
- 7:06Speaker 3: That the Cardinals really need to lean on to come through,
- 7:09Speaker 3: and when they were going well, these guys were coming
- 7:12Speaker 3: through right.
- 7:13Speaker 4: But it just shows you.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Like the talent level, I'll say this, The talent level
- 7:17Speaker 3: is such that unless your big dogs are getting it
- 7:23Speaker 3: done all of a sudden, it's hard to find those runs.
- 7:26Speaker 4: It really is.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And this was a time where you mentioned a Kay
- 7:29Speaker 3: Contreras and Newt Bar and who else? Arnatto banged up,
- 7:36Speaker 3: and then on top of that, you have three guys
- 7:39Speaker 3: that have been terrific that just just haven't been hitting lately.
- 7:44Speaker 3: That's a recipe for an offensive disaster, I would say.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And we saw it, but I'm with the guys that
- 7:50Speaker 1: it was obviously very quiet in the Cardinals clubhouse post game,
- 7:53Speaker 1: but I believe the sentiment is, hey, all year long,
- 7:55Speaker 1: we've been a very resilient club.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Let's keep that up.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Take the off day everyone needs it, and try again
- 8:01Speaker 1: on Friday. So we'll get into the state of the
- 8:02Speaker 1: Cardinals roster after a quick message from Harry's Razors.
- 8:07Speaker 5: All Right, Harry's is going to get an award here
- 8:09Speaker 5: MVP in the shaving world, and aj if you want
- 8:12Speaker 5: to equate it to things that we talk about, it's
- 8:16Speaker 5: not expensive and it's super versatile, right the company itself,
- 8:21Speaker 5: because there's other products that you can get on the
- 8:23Speaker 5: site deodorate, body wash, et cetera. But for your everyday
- 8:27Speaker 5: shaving needs, Harry's. As you covered and you look at
- 8:30Speaker 5: the pricing, you look at the quality, and you're like, wait,
- 8:32Speaker 5: why was I using the old classic brand for a
- 8:35Speaker 5: long time?
- 8:36Speaker 6: Listen as somebody right now that needs a Harry's. I've
- 8:39Speaker 6: just been lazy. Harry's. I have plenty of them lined
- 8:42Speaker 6: up or need to use. You can use them for
- 8:43Speaker 6: more than one shave, which is huge for me, and
- 8:45Speaker 6: the pricing is right. I got to go give my
- 8:48Speaker 6: Harries because my neck beard is sick. But Harry's will
- 8:50Speaker 6: fix that. It'll line me up straight and no bumps,
- 8:53Speaker 6: no cuts. It's exactly what I need for a great price.
- 8:56Speaker 4: That's right.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Get the edge on your shave with Harry's. Normally their
- 8:59Speaker 5: trial set is ten dollars, but right now you can
- 9:01Speaker 5: get it for just six dollars at Harry's dot com
- 9:03Speaker 5: slash vowl. That's our exclusive link Harry's dot com slash
- 9:06Speaker 5: foul for a six dollars trial set.
- 9:09Speaker 1: All right, let's start with our Cardinals injury report. A
- 9:12Speaker 1: lot of guys going through it right now. Of our's
- 9:15Speaker 1: new bar was unavailable Monday's game. He's dealing with some
- 9:19Speaker 1: back and a rib tightness, soreness. However you want to
- 9:21Speaker 1: DM it not serious and frn i Els didn't just
- 9:23Speaker 1: a couple of days of rest back in the lineup,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but definitely not one hundred percent. Nolan Aronado has a
- 9:28Speaker 1: right index finger sprain that he does not know how
- 9:31Speaker 1: he got and he thinks that happened as he's betting
- 9:34Speaker 1: on an infield single. Over the weekend in Cleveland, try
- 9:37Speaker 1: he was in the lineup to play third base on Monday,
- 9:39Speaker 1: was a late scratch. They swapped him and Gorman, so
- 9:41Speaker 1: he was the DH said, we talked to him Tuesday.
- 9:44Speaker 2: He could barely swing and hold of bat.
- 9:45Speaker 1: His finger was in a little uh soft cast, and
- 9:50Speaker 1: on Tuesday he was just a no go. He couldn't
- 9:51Speaker 1: even throw. He tried to go out on the field,
- 9:53Speaker 1: couldn't do it. So the thought was on Tuesday to
- 9:55Speaker 1: give him Tuesday most likely Wednesday today, and then Thursday
- 10:00Speaker 1: the off day, give him three days of rest and
- 10:01Speaker 1: hope that it is better by Friday. So that was
- 10:04Speaker 1: probably the worst possible time for Wilson. Contraras take a
- 10:07Speaker 1: hit by a ninety nine mile power fastball from Paul
- 10:09Speaker 1: Skins on the left wrist. I mean, that was his
- 10:11Speaker 1: fourteenth hit by pitch this year, and that one on
- 10:14Speaker 1: contact looked the worst.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I was surprised he.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Stayed in that game, but he said is he was
- 10:18Speaker 1: running the bases, it just was not gouse. The pain
- 10:20Speaker 1: was not subsiding it was getting worse, so he was
- 10:22Speaker 1: removed from the ballgame, and he told us Tuesday night,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I'm really doubtful to play Wednesday, same thing as Nolan.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Hopefully I can take Thursday and go into Friday and
- 10:30Speaker 1: be healthy. So there is no guarantee that either player
- 10:34Speaker 1: is back on Friday, but you certainly hope one, if
- 10:35Speaker 1: not both, And those two have to be in serious,
- 10:39Speaker 1: serious pain to take two days out in a row.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I mean, Nolan Arnano, you have to like drag him
- 10:45Speaker 1: off the heel to take a day off. Same with contrarasts.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So that's how you know it's pretty serious. You know,
- 10:50Speaker 1: I thought, honestly, I thought he was a for me
- 10:52Speaker 1: and did a nice job with the bat filling in.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I know there weren't any runs to show for it,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but it's you know, it's not an ideal situation. You
- 10:59Speaker 1: also thought that you'd Jordan Walker back, who's eligible to
- 11:01Speaker 1: be activated off the injured list on July third, which
- 11:04Speaker 1: is tomorrow, so the Cardinals were looking at potentially having
- 11:07Speaker 1: him for the Cup Series. That is no longer the case.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Alie Marmele said, while Walker was in Pittsburgh, I saw.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Him this morning.
- 11:13Speaker 1: He was meeting with the med staff to make sure
- 11:14Speaker 1: that everything was good. This is not an injury, Bernie,
- 11:17Speaker 1: that's like a quad muscle or an ankle sprain. This
- 11:20Speaker 1: is a health issue, so they're being super cautious about it.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Everything checked out good, All the tests were great. So
- 11:26Speaker 1: Jordan Walker caught a flight from Pittsburgh back to Saint Louis.
- 11:29Speaker 1: He's gonna meet with the Springfield Cardinals and finish through
- 11:32Speaker 1: the weekend at least a rehab assignment with them the earlies.
- 11:35Speaker 1: We'll see Walker is before the National Series starting July eighth,
- 11:38Speaker 1: but that's no guarantee either. So that's four guys really
- 11:41Speaker 1: that we know that are banged up. But let me
- 11:44Speaker 1: tell you that entire clubhouse is clying its way to
- 11:46Speaker 1: the All Star break. We knew how Gruel and June
- 11:49Speaker 1: would be. They need this off day, Bernie. If these
- 11:52Speaker 1: guys can't go on Friday, who needs to step up?
- 11:56Speaker 3: Geez up, lot know, let me I'll make a bad joke.
- 12:02Speaker 3: You know, when jose for Mean is like one of
- 12:04Speaker 3: your best players in the Pittsburgh Series, that's probably a
- 12:07Speaker 3: good reflection on the state of the Cardinals offense right now.
- 12:09Speaker 4: With all the guys banged up or just burned out. Listen.
- 12:13Speaker 3: No, you know, we put a lot on Nolan Gorman.
- 12:15Speaker 3: We see that he's capable of delivering a lot of impact.
- 12:18Speaker 3: He's a guy that's gonna have to step up.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Listen.
- 12:21Speaker 3: It's it's unfair because they're well, it's not unfair, it's
- 12:23Speaker 3: just the reality. You know, Erlison and Donovan are going
- 12:26Speaker 3: to have to step up because they've been really cold,
- 12:29Speaker 3: and that really that has an impact on the offense,
- 12:34Speaker 3: I think in general, and I don't know how realistic
- 12:37Speaker 3: this is. The you know there their outfield is basically
- 12:42Speaker 3: really terrible offensively. But I don't know if there is
- 12:46Speaker 3: a magic solution to that. But you'd like to see
- 12:49Speaker 3: some out some offense from the outfield, and.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Who else who might leave out here?
- 12:55Speaker 3: You know, And again it's if we're you know, we
- 12:58Speaker 3: don't know whether can turn it's going to be one
- 13:00Speaker 3: hundred percent close to it or Aronato. So I don't
- 13:03Speaker 3: want to mention them. We're talking about guys beside them,
- 13:06Speaker 3: and I think really we we kind of hit on it.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I you know, Victor Scott's been going, okay, it'd.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Be good for them find series.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it'd be really good for the cars if he
- 13:15Speaker 3: had a good series in Chicago. But it's really going
- 13:17Speaker 3: to come down to Burlison and Donovan and Neotbar because
- 13:25Speaker 3: they just really need that. Those are essential pieces to
- 13:28Speaker 3: this offense. So you don't ask a guy to step
- 13:31Speaker 3: up who's basically, you know, incapable of stepping up. Mason
- 13:35Speaker 3: in as well, Mason Win's got to keep doing his thing.
- 13:38Speaker 4: He's been hitting. He gets frustrated, though.
- 13:41Speaker 3: These are the guys that are gonna have to you know,
- 13:43Speaker 3: carry deliver the mail there. You know, there's no no
- 13:46Speaker 3: way about it. It's a boring answer, but it's true.
- 13:49Speaker 2: It's true, right, It's all I ever needs to set up.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, And I wonder for as effective as
- 13:54Speaker 1: pedro Pa has been behind the plate.
- 13:55Speaker 2: You and I both know this. We've talked about it extensively.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Do they swap and poe one day and try to
- 14:02Speaker 1: make up for the offense, but know that you subtract
- 14:04Speaker 1: some defense?
- 14:05Speaker 2: Like what game are you trying to play there?
- 14:08Speaker 1: I saw a tweet I can't remember who it's from,
- 14:10Speaker 1: but something about how the Cardinals need to figure out
- 14:13Speaker 1: a way to blend pedro pahes and you Joel Pozzo
- 14:17Speaker 1: into one catcher, and they'd have like the most elite
- 14:19Speaker 1: catcher in baseball. So I do wonder if if Conturras
- 14:22Speaker 1: and Arnado and or are not available on Friday, do
- 14:25Speaker 1: we see Poso in there to just try to get
- 14:27Speaker 1: some offense going.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I mean, that dude can hit balls that are like
- 14:30Speaker 2: fifty feet above the above his head. I feel like.
- 14:33Speaker 4: He's so much fun to watch.
- 14:34Speaker 3: It's true, no matter where you throw it, he's good.
- 14:37Speaker 3: He'll whack it into left field, right drive it up
- 14:40Speaker 3: the middle. I mean, you know, I don't mean to
- 14:42Speaker 3: be the old guy here, but you know, when I
- 14:45Speaker 3: was a kid growing up, I mean, the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 14:47Speaker 3: had a great, a really entertaining catcher named Manny Sangian,
- 14:51Speaker 3: and all the announcers used to say, you just watch
- 14:53Speaker 3: this guy like the worst, the worst thing, the worst
- 14:58Speaker 3: thing you can do.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Like, in other words, the worst thing that can.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Happen to him is if a pitcher actually throws them
- 15:02Speaker 3: a strike, because if you throw it right down.
- 15:05Speaker 4: The middle, you don't know what to do.
- 15:06Speaker 3: But he's ripping line drives on you know, pitches that
- 15:09Speaker 3: are like three three feet outside and pitchers that are
- 15:12Speaker 3: in on his hands, pictures are at his feet, and
- 15:15Speaker 3: there are guys like that in baseball, and Poso definitely
- 15:19Speaker 3: seems to be that kind of hitter.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Those guys are fun to watch. By the way, he
- 15:24Speaker 4: is fun.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I love when he pinched its.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, there, we're probably gonna have some scoring
- 15:27Speaker 1: opportunity here. But for really, though, to this series underscored
- 15:32Speaker 1: to me once again the importance of having Anyvon Herrera
- 15:34Speaker 1: in that lineup. Yes, they are really missing him, and
- 15:38Speaker 1: I know one series does not take away from all
- 15:40Speaker 1: the growth at Burlison and Gorman have made, and I'm
- 15:44Speaker 1: not suggesting that at all. I actually think the series
- 15:46Speaker 1: is very much an anomaly for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But when this offense is searching again five shutouts in
- 15:51Speaker 1: their last eight games, you really start to miss the
- 15:54Speaker 1: impact bats and you really start to miss Herrera. So
- 15:56Speaker 1: there hasn't only been a status update for what he's
- 15:58Speaker 1: been doing out in Saint Louis. Still expect to be
- 16:00Speaker 1: at least multiple weeks before they're even considering a rehab assignment.
- 16:03Speaker 1: It's been a tough blow, and you know, I think
- 16:05Speaker 1: this also makes it more difficult because it's July. It's
- 16:08Speaker 1: trade deadline month. There's a lot of hype over big
- 16:10Speaker 1: Cardinals should buy or sell. And this is why it's
- 16:13Speaker 1: really hard to kind of predict what they're going to do,
- 16:16Speaker 1: because much like this whole season, they're up and down
- 16:20Speaker 1: and we probably won't know the direction the Cardinals are
- 16:22Speaker 1: going to take or what they should take until just
- 16:24Speaker 1: before the deadline. So basically, Cardinals fans, I'm telling you,
- 16:27Speaker 1: get ready to ride the roller coaster that we normally
- 16:29Speaker 1: we've alread adjusted two of the wins and the losses,
- 16:31Speaker 1: but of the trade deadline speculation and rumors as well.
- 16:34Speaker 2: And keep me in your thoughts because it's hard for
- 16:36Speaker 2: me too.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Okay, I'm already unstable enough, and then you're throw them
- 16:39Speaker 1: an unstable job.
- 16:40Speaker 2: It's just all around a mess.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:42Speaker 3: I read your You know, you're as always a terrific
- 16:45Speaker 3: piece at the Athletic about the trade deadline preview, and
- 16:48Speaker 3: I actually kind of felt bad for you from the standpoint.
- 16:52Speaker 3: From the standpoint it's like, well, I know the Athletic
- 16:55Speaker 3: editors want all the beat writers to say, well, this
- 16:57Speaker 3: will be the team's approach at the deadline, and well,
- 17:00Speaker 3: the Cardinals it's all up in the air. And you,
- 17:03Speaker 3: I mean, you did a really good job of like
- 17:06Speaker 3: explaining why it's all up in the air.
- 17:08Speaker 4: And as much as we all want to say, okay, buyer, seller,
- 17:11Speaker 4: do both, what do we do?
- 17:12Speaker 3: You know, it's impossible to answer that question in a
- 17:16Speaker 3: conclusive or coherent way right now.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Correct, And it's gonna change. It's gonna change literally every week,
- 17:22Speaker 2: if not every day.
- 17:23Speaker 3: I mean, you know, Cardinals fans not listen, man, I
- 17:26Speaker 3: should say social media fans.
- 17:28Speaker 4: You know, the Cardinals aren't a roll and it's like, oh, man,
- 17:30Speaker 4: go all in. This team can go a long way. Now.
- 17:32Speaker 3: They get they get you know, they get knocked around,
- 17:35Speaker 3: bopped around by the pirates and as the season's over,
- 17:38Speaker 3: fire everyone.
- 17:39Speaker 4: You know, it's like the Cardinals are a big time
- 17:42Speaker 4: roller coaster. There is no question about it.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I mean, this is the thing that gets you really
- 17:46Speaker 3: really this season is nuts. That this season is crazy.
- 17:50Speaker 3: These these offensive fluctuations are incredibly intense one way or
- 17:56Speaker 3: the other. You know, in their in their last less
- 18:00Speaker 3: and excuse me, their last ten losses, right, the Cardinals
- 18:04Speaker 3: have scored four runs totals in the last ten losses.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Now and their last eleven wins, they've scored five or
- 18:13Speaker 3: more runs every time, and they've scored seven runs like
- 18:17Speaker 3: seven times out of the eleven.
- 18:20Speaker 4: So when they're going good, they're like unstoppable.
- 18:23Speaker 3: But when they get cold, it's like the worst offense
- 18:27Speaker 3: you've ever seen.
- 18:28Speaker 2: They get cold.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 3: So I mean, like when I say it's like they're
- 18:32Speaker 3: a team of extremes offensively, I'm not embellrassing.
- 18:35Speaker 4: They really truly are.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Yeah, they are. They are, Bernie, So just get used
- 18:41Speaker 2: to that.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Cardinals stands, you know, like we said at the beginning
- 18:44Speaker 1: of the season, not going to be boring, No, and
- 18:48Speaker 1: it's not.
- 18:49Speaker 4: It's not no, it's this is all part of the drama.
- 18:54Speaker 3: This is a very dramatic season in a lot of ways,
- 18:57Speaker 3: much more dramatic than we.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Could have envision right.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Yes, and again, not to be fred Bird here because
- 19:03Speaker 3: everyone knows I'm not that.
- 19:06Speaker 4: But they're forty six and forty one.
- 19:08Speaker 3: They're five games, No, they're forty seven and forty one.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Seven forty one Yeah, yeah, okay, sorry.
- 19:14Speaker 3: There's six games over five hundred. I mean I would
- 19:16Speaker 3: have taken that if you would have said, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 3: if you would have asked most Cardinals fans. All right,
- 19:21Speaker 3: this deep into the season, would you take a team,
- 19:23Speaker 3: you know, being six games over five hundred.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I think the answer would be, well, heck.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 19:30Speaker 1: But now because we've seen that their splin is actually
- 19:32Speaker 1: probably higher, the expectations change. So that's a baseball susan
- 19:36Speaker 1: to quote one of my favorite baseball quotes ever. Quick
- 19:40Speaker 1: message from Cargarow's and then we'll preview the upcoming series
- 19:42Speaker 1: against the Cubs. I know we just saw them, but
- 19:44Speaker 1: guess what, they're back again, first time Atverleyfield all year
- 19:47Speaker 1: and took us forever to get there. So let's hear
- 19:50Speaker 1: from Kargarous and we'll wrap it up with a preview
- 19:52Speaker 1: of the Cubs.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Kratz, I am actually in the market for a new.
- 19:57Speaker 7: Car, Yes, a used car up north, so I can
- 20:02Speaker 7: drive very far to todd father studio and to my
- 20:05Speaker 7: house and to your house in.
- 20:08Speaker 8: Confidence, right, you don't want to be confused?
- 20:10Speaker 5: Yes, because your parency this is big on our show
- 20:14Speaker 5: and just.
- 20:15Speaker 8: Fat to the confidence part is what I stick with
- 20:17Speaker 8: because it's like, did I I gotta check another site?
- 20:20Speaker 8: I gotta check this site or that site. It's all
- 20:23Speaker 8: in one place. I know I got the best deal

- 20:49Speaker 5: Go get them a look. Car gurus dot com, c
- 20:51Speaker 5: A r g U r us dot com.
- 20:55Speaker 1: All right, to the friendly confines of Eurglyfield, we go.
- 20:57Speaker 1: The Cardinals have set their probables. It will be everyone
- 21:00Speaker 1: on turn. Miles michaelis on Friday, Matthew libertore on Saturday,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and the club is planning to start Eric Fetti on Sunday,
- 21:06Speaker 1: despite two really horrible starts by Fetti. Now here's one
- 21:10Speaker 1: thing that I do know. Miles Michael's pitching on the
- 21:11Speaker 1: fourth of July. Just I feel like set something up.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I just feel like that's gonna be a good outing
- 21:15Speaker 1: for him. I sometimes the storylines right themselves, so for
- 21:20Speaker 1: Cardinals fans, maybe that will help.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Libby has looked fine. He looks really good actually, and
- 21:25Speaker 2: Eric Fetty.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I do wonder if the Cardinals can get some length
- 21:29Speaker 1: out of Miles and Libby and leave the bullpen in
- 21:32Speaker 1: a good place. I don't think they'll go full full
- 21:34Speaker 1: bullpen game on Sunday, but I wonder if that would
- 21:36Speaker 1: change how Fetti is being used, because he is just
- 21:39Speaker 1: so predictable right now. He's getting hit so hard that
- 21:42Speaker 1: Cutter especially. I do wonder, Bernie, if the Cardinals could
- 21:45Speaker 1: do maybe a short leach with Eric Fetty and if
- 21:48Speaker 1: he doesn't have it early, just go all hands on
- 21:49Speaker 1: deck with the bullpen, especially knowing they have the off
- 21:52Speaker 1: day again on Monday, they're.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Gonna have to do that. I mean, look, Fetti's a
- 21:55Speaker 4: nice guy.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Nobody feels worse than him, and he's also got a
- 21:59Speaker 3: lot at stake personally because he's going to be a
- 22:01Speaker 3: free eight.
- 22:02Speaker 4: But it's just not there.
- 22:03Speaker 3: I mean, and really, he's been getting away with a
- 22:05Speaker 3: lot of stuff all year, you know where you know
- 22:09Speaker 3: his stuff is simply not that good.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Every metric will tell you that. So yeah, I think that.
- 22:14Speaker 3: There's got to be a little more urgency in this series,
- 22:18Speaker 3: not only because you're playing the Cubs and you don't
- 22:21Speaker 3: want to let them like run away from you. But also,
- 22:23Speaker 3: just coming off this clunker of a series in Pittsburgh,
- 22:26Speaker 3: I mean, pardon the cliche, but the Cardinals have to
- 22:29Speaker 3: make some sort of statement at Wrigley Field that says, no,
- 22:33Speaker 3: we're still here, We're not going anywhere. But I think
- 22:36Speaker 3: Ali is going to have to manage accordingly, you know,
- 22:40Speaker 3: be really aggressive and really proactive, and manage with a
- 22:44Speaker 3: very strong.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Sense of of urgency. Sorry, i'm stammering today, so.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Because you know, we've all lost brain cells over the
- 22:51Speaker 2: last three days.
- 22:54Speaker 4: That's right. I haven't even had a cocktail yet. I'm
- 22:56Speaker 4: already stammering.
- 22:57Speaker 2: So anyway, well on my way to the airports.
- 22:59Speaker 1: About change, No, you know, I think you're right, and
- 23:03Speaker 1: I think that's something the Cardinals are weighing. Look, Eric
- 23:05Speaker 1: Fetty was as honest as you could be after a
- 23:07Speaker 1: Monday start where he said, I'm just getting really predictable.
- 23:10Speaker 1: I'm leaving a lot of pitches up. When Eric Fetti's
- 23:12Speaker 1: at his best, he's low in the zone, getting weak contact.
- 23:15Speaker 2: We know this. He's the same ground ball prototype of
- 23:17Speaker 2: a lot of guys on this staff. You don't have.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Success as a ground ball pitcher, if you leave pitches
- 23:21Speaker 1: up in the zone, they get crushed. And he started
- 23:23Speaker 1: doing that in the last two starts. And yes, there's
- 23:26Speaker 1: expected numbers predicted that something like this, not to this magnitude,
- 23:29Speaker 1: but better or worse than what he was doing was
- 23:32Speaker 1: on the horizon.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And I think there's a certain level of.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Skill if you're Eric Fetty that allows you to keep
- 23:37Speaker 1: those expected numbers the way they are and your actual
- 23:39Speaker 1: numbers lower. But lately, and this is why both outings,
- 23:42Speaker 1: things filed on him so quickly. He just started leading
- 23:45Speaker 1: pitches up in the zone and could not pinpoint the
- 23:47Speaker 1: location of the cutter specifically. He said, I was getting predictable.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm sitting thigh high middle middle, like those are not
- 23:53Speaker 1: competitive pitches, and they were not. So that's the key
- 23:57Speaker 1: for Fetti is to clean that up, get back low
- 24:00Speaker 1: in the zone where he lives, spike the ball in
- 24:02Speaker 1: the dirt.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Anything is better than thigh high, middle middle.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And if he starts showing that against this potent Cubs
- 24:08Speaker 1: offense at Wrigley Field on Sunday Night baseball, we all
- 24:11Speaker 1: know the balls are inconsistent. You know, I'm not going
- 24:13Speaker 1: out and publicly stating that, but expect, especially if the
- 24:17Speaker 1: wind is like blowing out, that's going to be a
- 24:19Speaker 1: really poor recipe for success.
- 24:20Speaker 2: So I would expect.
- 24:21Speaker 1: My speculation is it's short leashed for Eric Fetti if
- 24:24Speaker 1: the Cardinals can get there, Miles and Letvey have to
- 24:28Speaker 1: you know, go along post in order for even that
- 24:30Speaker 1: to be a possibility.
- 24:31Speaker 3: You know, I have to say, you know, in all
- 24:33Speaker 3: candor real quick, you know, it doesn't exactly fill your heart,
- 24:37Speaker 3: our heart, my heart with optimism when two of the
- 24:41Speaker 3: three games are being started by on Michaelisenfetti. However, however,
- 24:46Speaker 3: the Cups are kind of a weird team. They are
- 24:49Speaker 3: much much better offensively on the road than they are
- 24:53Speaker 3: at Wrigley Field.
- 24:55Speaker 2: That's strange ballpark to hit at.
- 24:57Speaker 3: And it's true the numbers are conclusive, and yeah when
- 25:00Speaker 3: the wind's blowing out, but the wind doesn't blow out
- 25:02Speaker 3: as often as it used to back in the olden
- 25:05Speaker 3: days because of maybe all that construction around the ballpark.
- 25:07Speaker 3: But so famous last words, but I actually think maybe
- 25:12Speaker 3: you know, pitching at Wrigley Field for those for those guys,
- 25:16Speaker 3: you know, I don't know why the Cubs underperform there,
- 25:19Speaker 3: and it could change at anytime, but who knows. You know,
- 25:24Speaker 3: that's a good way to win two out of three.
- 25:25Speaker 3: You surprise them with Michaelsenfetti exceeding expectations.
- 25:29Speaker 4: But I ain't gonna lie. I don't have high hopes.
- 25:33Speaker 1: This is not the series to come into with optimism
- 25:35Speaker 1: after what we saw Cardinals fans, so I do understand.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But you know what, let's all take a mental reset.
- 25:40Speaker 1: We'll go into the off day. Everyone, like I said,
- 25:43Speaker 1: everyone needs it, including me. I can't wait, and you know,
- 25:46Speaker 1: hopefully we'll have a very fun holiday weekend in Chicago.
- 25:50Speaker 1: A short one for you guys today at Cardinal Territory,
- 25:52Speaker 1: but I very much have to catch this flight. We
- 25:55Speaker 1: will have Michael mcgreeby on the show Friday's episode. Yes,
- 25:58Speaker 1: as we know pro Michael McGreevy podcast, he will make
- 26:00Speaker 1: his Cardinal Territory debut. He just threw six shut out
- 26:03Speaker 1: I means from Memphis on Tuesday in Nashville, and he
- 26:07Speaker 1: is the first player ever. When I asked if he
- 26:10Speaker 1: would like to do his podcast to reply, yeah, that
- 26:13Speaker 1: would be sick.
- 26:14Speaker 4: I was like, that's a good thing, right.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Usually it's like yeah, I guess, so I'm just going
- 26:20Speaker 1: to say that maybe he's really excited about it. So
- 26:22Speaker 1: we'll see and then Bernie, of course, we'll be back
- 26:24Speaker 1: with you later at the end of the series.
- 26:26Speaker 4: And just a quick footnote on the way out. With
- 26:29Speaker 4: all of this going on, there's one thing that is outstanding.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Now.
- 26:33Speaker 4: I know Katie Wu's got.
- 26:34Speaker 3: To do some work, I get it, right, But Katie
- 26:37Speaker 3: Wu is going to have an off day, kind of
- 26:39Speaker 3: an off day in Chicago.
- 26:42Speaker 4: She's she's on the loose. Everybody watch out. She is
- 26:47Speaker 4: on the loose. So I don't know whether that.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Means the stores on Michigan Avenue are going to be
- 26:53Speaker 3: doing some business.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I don't know what that means, but.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Well, it's a it's a Saint Louis Sports Girl weekend,
- 27:00Speaker 1: both to our share from Channel four and Alexa Dad
- 27:02Speaker 1: but FanDuel, they'll be with me, and we're super excited
- 27:06Speaker 1: about it. I mean, they're not working the series, I am,
- 27:09Speaker 1: but we have the off day together. So oh yeah,
- 27:12Speaker 1: it's gonna be a great weekend.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Can't wait.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And if the Cardinals have some news on like a
- 27:16Speaker 1: Thursday afternoon, I need everybody to just pour one out
- 27:19Speaker 1: for me and pray for me because I probably won't
- 27:20Speaker 1: be any state to handle it so well, I still
- 27:22Speaker 1: take the day off.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it sounds it sounds good to be I know
- 27:28Speaker 3: you have a good time and hopefully there's there is
- 27:31Speaker 3: no there is no bulletins that require urgent writing and
- 27:34Speaker 3: reporting and all that stuff. So anyway, thank you, thanks,
- 27:37Speaker 3: thank you's always enjoyed being with Thanks.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Yeah, great episode and yeah, Michael mcgreeby on Friday, stay tuned.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Thanks guys, we'll be back later in the week.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Ti
