Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: For more.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Let's bring in the United States Attorney for the District
- 0:03Speaker 2: of Columbia, Jeanine Pierro. Judge Janine, thank you for being
- 0:06Speaker 2: here on the Sunday Briefing.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Good to be with you. Peter. Sorry you're not here.
- 0:10Speaker 3: I'm in New York. You're in DC. How did that happen?
- 0:13Speaker 3: You know?
- 0:14Speaker 2: I gotta just be here while while you're out of town,
- 0:17Speaker 2: just to kind.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Of make a human detect everywhere ham and.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Shield around the reflecting pool as soon as I'm done here,
- 0:23Speaker 2: And I want to ask you about this video that
- 0:25Speaker 2: we just played. Yeah, President Trump's got a crime stoppers
- 0:28Speaker 2: tip for you, he says. Lightweight. ABC reporter Jonathan Carl
- 0:32Speaker 2: was seen sticking his hand into the pool and trying
- 0:34Speaker 2: to rip the rubber off this surface. Judge is Jonathan
- 0:39Speaker 2: Carl from ABC in trouble.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Well, you know it depends, you know, anyone who was
- 0:46Speaker 1: in a position of vandalizing or attempting to vandalize the
- 0:51Speaker 1: reflecting pool will face the criminal justice system in DC. Look,
- 0:55Speaker 1: the President has made it a priority to make DC
- 0:58Speaker 1: not only safe but beautiful, and there are several citations
- 1:02Speaker 1: that have been handed out to individuals and these are
- 1:05Speaker 1: cases that will be prosecuted to the full extent. If
- 1:09Speaker 1: there are more serious products that are put into the
- 1:13Speaker 1: reflecting pool to create more algae or a bigger problem,
- 1:18Speaker 1: then we'll consider more serious charges. But make no mistake,
- 1:23Speaker 1: making DC beautiful is a priority. And if you damage, vandalize,
- 1:28Speaker 1: or do anything to impact something like the reflected pool,
- 1:32Speaker 1: you can be prosecuted.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And how big a problem is vandalism on the National
- 1:36Speaker 2: Mall Because there's all these stories of the reflecting pool,
- 1:39Speaker 2: of course, but then you got somebody spelling out eighty
- 1:41Speaker 2: six forty seven on the grass. Where does this rank
- 1:46Speaker 2: in the list of big problems for you this time?
- 1:49Speaker 3: Well, look, there's a lot of big problems.
- 1:51Speaker 1: One thing, Peter, you can't say, you know this crime
- 1:54Speaker 1: is so you know, it's such a low level crime.
- 1:57Speaker 3: It's a misdemeanor. You know, we can't be worried about it.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Every crime, and it's been proven with a broken windows theory,
- 2:04Speaker 1: you've got to go after every crime, and in the
- 2:08Speaker 1: identification of even minor crimes, you create an atmosphere or
- 2:13Speaker 1: a climate.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Where people become more respectful.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So we have the ability and we will prosecute every
- 2:20Speaker 1: violation of law, and that's why DC is now safer
- 2:24Speaker 1: than it's ever been. I mean, crime is down because
- 2:26Speaker 1: of the President Trump's making DC safe and beautiful, because
- 2:30Speaker 1: of the federal enhancement, because of the coordinated efforts of
- 2:33Speaker 1: law enforcement. We've got the lowest homicide rate in decades.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Crime is down to levels that they haven't seen, and
- 2:40Speaker 1: that is because we put our energy and our determination
- 2:45Speaker 1: into making sure that cases are being prosecuted.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Whereas years ago they.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Didn't even prosecute sixty seven percent of the arrests. We're
- 2:53Speaker 1: changing all that and making sure that DC is safe,
- 2:56Speaker 1: especially as we come up to the fourth of July.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Holland and Judge, We've got all these America two fifty
- 3:02Speaker 2: events coming up in DC, but elsewhere after the details
- 3:06Speaker 2: of the UFC terror plot came out, Yeah, how worried
- 3:08Speaker 2: are you about drones specifically disrupting events in your jurisdiction
- 3:14Speaker 2: here in DC.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Look, we have seen peter people come to DC to
- 3:18Speaker 1: create crimes and to get attention and commit crimes and
- 3:22Speaker 1: get attention.
- 3:23Speaker 3: The fourth of July and the.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Two hundred and fiftieth anniversary is something that the President
- 3:28Speaker 1: and federal law enforcement have been planning for for months.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It is something that's on the radar, and the fact
- 3:34Speaker 1: that it was prevented at the UFC event, as horrific
- 3:38Speaker 1: as that event might have been, where they were bringing
- 3:40Speaker 1: in explosive devices on drones and then they wanted to
- 3:44Speaker 1: pick off people. They are at Fifteen's as they exited
- 3:46Speaker 1: the stadium. I mean, this is the kind of thing
- 3:49Speaker 1: where law enforcement is energized and is coordinated and working
- 3:54Speaker 1: to make sure that the citizens are safe in DC,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and the president has done it, he'll continue.
- 4:00Speaker 3: To do it.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And kind of on the same track as that we
- 4:02Speaker 2: heard at the start of Epic Fury that big cities
- 4:06Speaker 2: like Washington with a lot of soft targets and hard targets,
- 4:09Speaker 2: needed to be worried about potential Iranian sleeper cells or
- 4:13Speaker 2: guys sympathizing with Iran attacking in the homeland, and Washington,
- 4:17Speaker 2: DC is the place that gets talked about as much
- 4:20Speaker 2: as anywhere. How worried are we at this point in
- 4:23Speaker 2: the conflict about or how worried should people be about
- 4:26Speaker 2: being in a big crowd on the fourth of July
- 4:29Speaker 2: holiday or around the two fifty stuff.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Look, we have been working on this for over a year.
- 4:36Speaker 1: We knew that this time and this holiday was coming.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And make no mistake, Federal law enforcement along with the
- 4:43Speaker 1: White House, all of the agencies, FBI, the US Marshalls
- 4:48Speaker 1: Park Police, Secret Service, you know, we're on top of
- 4:52Speaker 1: this and we have been for a long time.
- 4:55Speaker 3: My role is to prosecute.
- 4:56Speaker 1: My role is to make sure that the violent criminals
- 4:59Speaker 1: don't make it out of My role is to make
- 5:01Speaker 1: sure the criminals understand, you come to d C to
- 5:04Speaker 1: commit violence, you're going to end up in jail for
- 5:06Speaker 1: a very long time.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Things are different now in DC, but.
- 5:09Speaker 1: We also have the ability to protect the citizens and
- 5:14Speaker 1: that is the first obligation of government. President Trump knows it.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He has brought in enforcements and reinforcements. Five hundred more
- 5:21Speaker 1: National Guard will be coming in to make sure that
- 5:24Speaker 1: the citizens are safe. I think people can feel very
- 5:27Speaker 1: confident that the president and the team, the law enforcement
- 5:31Speaker 1: effort is there to make sure that the American people
- 5:34Speaker 1: are safe in Washington.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And last thing before we let you go, there's a
- 5:38Speaker 2: Democratic Socialist who as the inside track for mayor of
- 5:42Speaker 2: DC and she's talking about working with the Trump administration
- 5:45Speaker 2: except when she doesn't want to listen to this.
- 5:48Speaker 1: As mayor, I will work with anyone who makes DC safer,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but I will also stand up to Trump.
- 5:56Speaker 3: And anyone arming DC is a place where we look
- 6:02Speaker 3: out for each other.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So what do you think, Judge, does that sound like
- 6:05Speaker 2: a good partner?
- 6:07Speaker 1: Well, you know, time will tell Peter, But I'll tell
- 6:10Speaker 1: you this. The number one obligation of every mayor in
- 6:13Speaker 1: this country, whether it's this woman or anyone else, is
- 6:16Speaker 1: public safety. I side with the victims. I don't side
- 6:19Speaker 1: with the criminals. And the idea that someone can decide that,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you know, you have to be against Trump is absurd
- 6:26Speaker 1: because Trump is the only person a mayor Bowser in
- 6:29Speaker 1: Washington has recognized as that has brought safety to the
- 6:32Speaker 1: citizens of Washington d C. Three years ago, Washington had
- 6:36Speaker 1: the fourth highest homicide rate in the nation, and it
- 6:39Speaker 1: wasn't until President Trump came in and we brought in
- 6:42Speaker 1: all of our forces and all the federal enhancement to
- 6:45Speaker 1: work with the MPD that we change this scenario here.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And we're not going to go backwards on our heart
- 6:51Speaker 1: fought ones. You know, if she needs to understand war,
- 6:54Speaker 1: what's going on, what it's like to deal with families
- 6:57Speaker 1: of lost victims to homicide, deal with rape victims, deal
- 7:01Speaker 1: with the victims that were traumatized by a carjacking. Well
- 7:05Speaker 1: that she can come and sit down and talk to me,
- 7:07Speaker 1: but we're not going backwards.
- 7:09Speaker 3: There's nothing that's going to change this.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And the only place for violent criminals in this country
- 7:14Speaker 1: is in jail and behind bars. And until we recognize that,
- 7:19Speaker 1: there will be chaos. But right now in Washington, there
- 7:22Speaker 1: is not chaos and we're not going back.
- 7:24Speaker 2: US Attorney for Washington to see Judge Janine Pierro. We've
- 7:27Speaker 2: wanted to have you on the show for a long time.
