- 0:52Thanks so much for your support. Now here's today's Adventure of Frank Race,
- 0:57The Adventure of the Brooklyn Acts. The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Paul
- 1:04to Bob. The war changed many things, the face of the earth and
- 1:17the people on it. Before the war, Frank Race worked as an attorney,
- 1:21but he treated his law books for the cloak and dagger of the oss.
- 1:25And when it was over, his former life was over too. Adventure
- 1:30had become his business, the Adventures of Frank Race. And now we joined
- 1:49Frank Race for the Adventure of the Brooklyn Accent. It was what you might
- 1:59call damp nice, the dampness being such that the persistent and sluicing down your
- 2:04neck and surging over your shoe tops. And as we slashed along the deserted
- 2:08street, I caught a little more from Mark Donald. Oh, brother just
- 2:12slapped me with a bottle of champagne and call me the normandy cold Mark.
- 2:15That noise you here ain't thunderful. It's my chopper has hammered together. This
- 2:22is the sunny sound. Look are you sure we're still in a state at
- 2:25Georgia? I figured we walking up to be just outside Montreal. I'm beginning
- 2:30to think I'm in a state of confusion. I keep getting the feeling that
- 2:32we've turned away from those docks. Have you heard the surf in the last
- 2:37few minutes. I don't hear nothing but a ringing in my ears, probably
- 2:40the foice sign in the morning. All right, you win. We'll go
- 2:44back to that cafe we passed in the last blot. I'm now you're talking,
- 2:47and if the place has good coffee, I'll forget all about in the
- 2:51morning. It was a short order spot, resided over by an ant and
- 3:00counter man who greeted us with a lacktooth grin. At the table, a
- 3:04couple of men and a girl said, munching hamburgers in an almost grim silence.
- 3:07But the place looked clean, and the old man looked clean. So
- 3:10Mark and I slid on the stools at the counter. Yeah, what'll it
- 3:15begins? Graham, biggers and coffee and the ass. That's what'll it be?
- 3:20All right? Pop? Side him up? Make it heavy on a
- 3:22coffee, he names Pete. Pop means wold think you look this way from
- 3:27having to listen to guys like you look Pop, I'm just a quiet guys.
- 3:31Don't wash hump and nobody. What makes sure the coffee is hot?
- 3:35With it? Yeah? How you wanted rack and ruin? Both of them
- 3:38straight? Do you know this town pretty well? Pete? Blackam hand?
- 3:44Ain't no southern from Jersey City. No, don't happen to know a man
- 3:49by the name of Beating, don't you Eddie Beating? Beating? Yeah?
- 3:53Let me see little guy pat No I put us names up now? Did
- 4:00he live around here as a boat a schooner? And that's another thing to
- 4:05get to the docks? Do we turn right at the door or left?
- 4:11Yeah? Closed the place like the back of his hand, he says,
- 4:15He means the back of his neck. You can't right about chick blocks.
- 4:20You're sure you could walk down that way a couple centuries ago? What was
- 4:28her name again? Beating? Edward Beating? Yeah, I was familiar,
- 4:32right, It wouldn't be told Husky food owns one of them. Coach dogs
- 4:38would love pop. We're just looking for the guy. We don't know a
- 4:41thing about his dogs, so you're just looking for the guy. Huh?
- 4:46Why? This was no native voice either. This was New York, New
- 4:50Yorker Hardway, Manhattan, via the alleys of the pool halls, the second
- 4:54rate night spots. He had a heavy beard line, and he stacked up
- 4:58as being husky, stood eyeing us with the curiosity of a weasel inspecting a
- 5:02nest full of eggs. You heard me, I asked you why you were
- 5:05looking already beating? You make it sound illegal? What do I have to
- 5:10do to get an answer extracted? Look? What do you think you got
- 5:14here? Pile a couple of pigeons? You want to talk to us?
- 5:16Keep it gentle or waddle back to your table. Both your boys feel that
- 5:21way. The words, though, rather an elegant, express my reaction precisely
- 5:28Jigger, Yeah, Roxy, come in. Jigger's approach was methodical and practice.
- 5:35Casual. Hand inserted itself inside and tells the jacket to drape the squat
- 5:40frame his eyes as he glided up to its looked disinterested, almost blazed stare
- 5:46of the professional gunman Chevo Roxy. I don't know these personalities come look at
- 5:53already beating, and I don't want to say why. I wouldn't call it
- 5:56friendly, would you? Jigger Nahn't god friendly at all. We don't mind
- 6:01telling you why we're looking for beating. No, who are you guys?
- 6:05My name is Race, This is Mark Donovan. Who are you? I'm
- 6:09Roxy Clark. Another southern accent in La crowd. Never mind these sides.
- 6:14What's the pitch in any beating? I'm done here for the Fidelity Life Insurance
- 6:17Company. Edward beating is beneficiary to a twenty thousand dollars policy that's now payable,
- 6:24and the company is anxious to make a settlement. Would leave any beating
- 6:28twenty thousand fish? The deceased, I understand, was an uncle of his.
- 6:31Oh yeah, jigga, what do you think about this? To me,
- 6:36it sounds like a bullish spaghetti Yeah, that's the way I figured.
- 6:40A big company working hard to lay a lout twenty gs. It don't mesh.
- 6:43It might seem strange, but with insurance outfits, it's done all the
- 6:46time. They consider it to be part of their contract. That makes quite
- 6:50a line, race, But I ain't buying it. Boat, don't he?
- 6:56Yeah that's right. Pop owns a sail board. Wanted them go to
- 6:59sea. Yeah yeah, I know him. No, no way. Two
- 7:02the live three four blocks from here at greenhouse. Will you other shutters en?
- 7:11I'll talk about water. I'll just said shut up. You said it
- 7:14when I ain't paying no attention? The three country in it pickerless warbler jigger,
- 7:17Yeah you no, no, no, no, no, wait a
- 7:19minute, wait, you ain'tble to come. You get what's left of his
- 7:23teeth, jigger, then maybe he won't be so lippy. Give me a
- 7:25pipe, No, no, no, you don't know. Don't make me
- 7:28come after. It'll be waste. Got a jigger. Just let's drop the
- 7:30whole thing. Get out of my way. There's no need to bother the
- 7:33old boy. What are you asking for? Sampler? You kid? Try
- 7:39this and you appreciate leading with your right chigger. I'm surprised, don't.
- 7:45You'll always be the same chicken, even if you come in with an next
- 7:56chicken. Can you hear me? Brothers East pretty handy with that stuff,
- 8:01ain't you, Race? I haven't met your lady Frank Clark. But I'd
- 8:05like you to know I'm sorry for the disturbance. Don't be sorry, right,
- 8:09I always admire artistry, and that was your artistry, wasn't it,
- 8:13Rockfort Susan, stay out of us, Roxy Darling. I've been completely quiet
- 8:18for at least twenty minutes, and that isn't like me at all. You're
- 8:24going to be around for a while, Susan. Get out of the car.
- 8:28Careful, pet you're a bad temper. Sure, Race, I'm Susan
- 8:33Drake. I'm saying it to Jackson was born. It's been a bit boring
- 8:37the last time. Why don't you call Race Deares Clark? This insurance deal?
- 8:46Is it on the level? Definitely? So you have to keep looking
- 8:50for beating? Is that it? That's it? Why I think I can't
- 8:54find it? No, No, I wasn't thinking that. I was thinking
- 8:58of the message trouble you're gonna find with him? Hey you're there, what's
- 9:13the law? Come over here? What are you doing out here this time?
- 9:22And then what do you have at seven o'clock curfew? Never mind the
- 9:24wise cracks. I'll just take you straight on in on what charge? Oh,
- 9:28we can work that out. Vaguatly for one thing, no visible means
- 9:33of support. We've means of support, plenty of it. If I say
- 9:37you'll wain't, you'll aim. So quit arguing. I'm sorry I said a
- 9:41word. I should know better. That's sensible, man. What are you
- 9:46doing around here? I told him in the short credentials which made it all
- 9:52right. He told us he was Jean Denzy, chief of police, and
- 9:54we spent an hour leaning against his car, listening to a confidential report on
- 9:58how he brand the town. It ended up with his driving us to the
- 10:03Beating house. There was an old fashioned pool bell, and the door was
- 10:05answered by a girl of about fifteen. She looked startled. Yes, hello,
- 10:13is mister Beating in? Not right now, but my mother's year.
- 10:18It's two men, mother, They want to see daddy. She seemed to
- 10:24be about the thirty, a handsome woman, even with faded makeup and a
- 10:28worried look about her eyes. What is it, your lord? We're looking
- 10:31for Edward Beating. Oh he's my husband, but he ain't here now.
- 10:37I understand he has a boat, schooner that he operates for hire. That's
- 10:41right, but he's already under chater. Would you tell me where I could
- 10:43find it. It's called a jenny b and it said Gallahan's landing. Go
- 10:48down pastreet as far as the darksn in turn left. Oh and if you're
- 10:52going there now, you can do me a favor, surely. Well if
- 10:54you see. My husband tend to come home usually hit five meets almost nine.
- 11:01I like him. Got mean bother? It still pretty cloudy with no
- 11:16sign of a moon. Eight to five says we get more rain. That's
- 11:20a happy thought place. What's what is guy beating when you do catch up
- 11:24with it? No? No, we know he's here. Can't we just
- 11:28let it go? It there? There could be dozens of Edward beatings.
- 11:30I have to identify this, fellows the right one. Can't we do it
- 11:33tomorrow? I'd much you had to beat the hotel plane cana? What's maps?
- 11:39Another car coming up? I've got a feeling we're the ones that's interested
- 11:43in Oh, greats alongside a hundred yards of board. Fancy you're right?
- 11:46They really got his pike? What's that right? We move apart of anything
- 11:50breaks and blast and left headlight. I'll take the right. Okay, Hi,
- 11:56a race, remember me? It's jigger right guy? Your slot yeah,
- 12:01and now I'm going to play a little too. All right, make
- 12:16the alien order fence. He got the pail? Who's got the ten sense?
- 12:22Oh apprently you're still in the mood for music. I'm gonna moved to
- 12:28offer up nights. Let's it closest squawk I've had since I stole a cabin
- 12:31front of the Chicago Express that goes for your I agree, but I think
- 12:35we win one of them. Brother, I already yelped back then it was
- 12:41no crime to life. Imagine that guy coming after us with a chatter box
- 12:45just because you called them a little wonder Maybe it wasn't jiggers idea at all.
- 12:50Right now, I wouldn't put a slot machine, slug or nothing.
- 12:54Oh there we going next? Still keep looking for that s corner. I
- 12:58might be crowding our luck a little. Let's go back to the hotel and
- 13:01get a nice prest race race. Come on, wake up when you wake
- 13:16up? Something funny? Corn, what tibe is? Come on? Get
- 13:18with It's about five five o'clock in the morning and you want a chat?
- 13:22Go back to sleep. Look, look, chum, I'm not kidding.
- 13:24Is a mob or something outside? Can't you hear it. Yes, yes,
- 13:28I do hear it. Sure you hear it. That's just that's it.
- 13:33Just barge in. We always receive visitors at this hour. Get up
- 13:37and get dressed. Race. We have to get you out of here.
- 13:39What for We got a lynch mob outside, So that's what it is.
- 13:43What does a lynch mob have to do with us? It seems like a
- 13:45lot of people know you boys have been looking for breath beating. Now he's
- 13:48been found murder. The ambles string you up for murder. That's moving a
- 13:50little fast, isn't it. Yeah, we better move fast us. I'm
- 13:52gonna have to place you under a rest. We'll return to the adventures of
- 14:05Frank Race in just about one minute. And now back to the adventures of
- 14:18Frank Race. Here was a venture with all the qualities of a nightmare,
- 14:31one of those things where nothing makes sense. We've been in Ton only forty
- 14:35eight hours, and now we were threatened with lynching. I tried to figure
- 14:39the angles as I got dressed. Nothing, Joe, you fellas got a
- 14:45crop right down this. I can't guarantee to get you the safety. Well,
- 14:48well let's be your voice lynch in shape. It will and they ain't
- 14:52good for men in my position. Well, I ain't good for guys in
- 14:54opposition either come election time. And one side won't put for you because you
- 14:58tried to stop it. On the other side won't bote for you because you've
- 15:01failed to stop it. We understand. Are there's something peculiar about this business?
- 15:05Chief? Yeah? I said it right. We'll pick a lesson out
- 15:09here. Race. Most got of guys. What's going to yell? And
- 15:11I've got Brooklyn accents? Are you sure? Are you kidding? Lessen than
- 15:15have bronze cheers? Were getting? You think when with a giant said Everitt's
- 15:18fail. Here's your answer, Chief, It's not a real lynching party at
- 15:20all. It's a frame up. What do you mean? No, a
- 15:22man by the name of Roxy Clark, I certainly do. He charters Eddie
- 15:26Beaton's boat. Nobody charters it for gambling, brings down parties to them wealth
- 15:30in New Yorkers, and they go out for three or four days at a
- 15:31time. Ana my fa. As long as they do it on the high
- 15:35seat. Well, for some reason, Roxy Clark thinks I'm in his way.
- 15:39That's the reason for this phony lynching. Bea where did you get the
- 15:41tip that brought you here from a woman and her name. When a woman
- 15:46gives out information like that over phone, you ain't gonna get a name.
- 15:50You won't, No Southerner, how do you plan to get us out here?
- 15:52I ain't figured it yet, But why don't you live at school by
- 15:54ourselves? So I don't know why you'd never make it. You'll have a
- 15:58better chance than with you trying to buck that mom. Well you might be
- 16:03a right. Okay, it's a deal. But if you don't make it,
- 16:07don't blame me. If we don't make a charm, we probably won't
- 16:10be around the blame you what This guy Cloth must have quite a mob with
- 16:25him. It's a big crowd. Start feeling about something, and you can
- 16:27always draw people who have nothing else to do. Look, tell me what
- 16:32are we looking for in his cello, window, the door, and here
- 16:34it is? Take a head and clut off. I don't get it.
- 16:38We go out of here carrying something? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 16:41we can use these empty cut good enough. Let's go better take a look
- 16:49for it doesn't seem to be anyone around. Come on, hey, you
- 16:56guys, hold it. I didn't see this man. You must have been
- 17:00leaning against the side of the door. Oh great, and he's got that
- 17:03shot going right on us. Who are you guys? Uh? We all
- 17:11worked for the hotels? Yeah, I'm thinking different. But Anna's boxes and
- 17:18started moving around up front. All right, you're the boy. Jack's a
- 17:40hotel. Does Miss Drake come in yet? How connect? Hello the Strake,
- 17:48This is Frank Race. I'm making that call you suggested. Oh well,
- 17:53hello, you called earlier. Yes, I want to express my appreciation
- 17:59what you did for what I did for you. Someone told the chief of
- 18:03police that I was in danger of being lynched. I got the impression it
- 18:06might have been you look great time a rotten phone conversation list. I tell
- 18:11you what, why don't you run over here and we could have a drink
- 18:14while we chat. I'd better see you somewhere else. I got out of
- 18:17the Jackson Hotel this morning with some typicualtyre you now bar called the Flamingo Club.
- 18:22I know where it is. You say, they're Race, I'll join.
- 18:33She took more than a few minutes, but when she came into the
- 18:37Flamingo Club, I was willing to admit that the weight had been worthwhile.
- 18:44What are you drinking? Gotch soda. That is a fetching out it.
- 18:48Do you really like it? You're a very fancy dish baby? That the
- 18:52crazy? Is that? Starling? What do I have here? Resinic?
- 18:56How about the drink? Martini Manhattan Maga discatch into them bartender? Mind?
- 19:00If I tell you something about yourself, mis Drake, maybe not. You're
- 19:04the wealthy Susan Drake of New York. You've been amusing yourself with the excitement
- 19:08that surrounds Roxy clock. So you know what he does down here, don't
- 19:12you? Is that why you brought me to this place to answer question?
- 19:18If it was, I've already changed my mind. Of course. I know
- 19:22why Rocks is down here? What's the story I'm beating? Why was he
- 19:26killed? Oh? Come? What do you think? I am? A
- 19:30police blotterer? If you think you could grow fond of me, give because
- 19:34I'm in need of it, baby, I'm in need of it. Well.
- 19:40The only thing I can tell you about Beating is that he didn't like
- 19:42it when he found out what Roxy was doing with his book. Beating didn't
- 19:45know about the gambling setup when Roxy first charted the schooner No, and when
- 19:49he did find out, he wanted no part of it. You see,
- 19:52I happen to hear the blow up on that beating was going to castle the
- 19:56chart. Maybe he's absolutely answer. Maybe that's the answer to everything. About
- 20:11an hour later, I dropped in at the beating house. Missus Beating swollen
- 20:15an eye from crying with baking pies. There's lack a woman in it,
- 20:19but I have to do something. They smell wonderful. I bet you're a
- 20:22fine cook. Yes, I'm pretty good, Maybe because I love it so
- 20:27much. I told her about the insurance, and a noticeable lift came to
- 20:33the depression of the crypt. She got out family documents for me, birth
- 20:37certificates and a marriage license issue to her and Edward beating in nineteen thirty eight.
- 20:41But what about the money now that he did when it still come to
- 20:47us? Certainly it belonged to your husband. Oh excuse me, won't you
- 20:52hello? What? Why yet he's right here? You? Thanks? Yes,
- 21:02I hadn't. Aren't you guess who I'm with? Why don't you tell
- 21:06me roxy clock? He claims you didn't have nothing to do with that machine's
- 21:10gonna do? How about the lynching frame of claims? He did that just
- 21:14to scare us out of town. So wait a second, I'll let you
- 21:15talk with him. Oh, Race, that's on the level about the gunning.
- 21:21That was Jigger Menton's party. Give my regards to Jigger. I want
- 21:23to talk to you, Race. This thing is getting sticky, no sense
- 21:26of me being hooked by it? Are you protesting your innocence? Roxy?
- 21:30I want to talk to you. I'm going back to the Jackson right now.
- 21:33Can you meet me there? All right, I'll see you there.
- 21:45But he didn't see me, even though I saw him, because by the
- 21:48time I got to a swede at the Jackson Hotel, someone else had already
- 21:52been there, someone who had put two bullets into Roxy Clock's body. I
- 21:59couldn't good, but after all, it was actually none of my affairs.
- 22:03I had come to find the right beneficiary to a twenty thousand dollars life insurance
- 22:07policy, and this I had accomplished even though Beating was dead. The money
- 22:12would go to his family. So five days later, Mark and I were
- 22:17at the local station waiting to board a northbound train with Susan Brake along as
- 22:22a fellow traveler. We also ran into other people we knew, Chief of
- 22:26Police Densey and missus Beating and her daughter Mary. All set, Race all
- 22:30set. I guess this is goodbye. That's yet. I'm going to ride
- 22:36aways with him, Cajun and pops up like that, lynchin Bean. We
- 22:38can take care of ourselves. Chief just the same. I'm coming along.
- 22:44How about you, Mary, because though you're traveling too. Yes, Mother
- 22:48and I are going to Daddy System, North Carolina until Yeah, we understand,
- 22:52Anne, but you got in the basket some of your mother's well couldn't.
- 22:56That's right. Our better includes apple pie. Not this time. Mother
- 23:02burned the pie she was baking the other day. Why yes, you go
- 23:19right? What are you doing prowl around in the middle of the night.
- 23:23I've been keeping a deathwatch, Mark dead Watch. I think I've got the
- 23:27key to those killings. I'm going to have to wait for a play to
- 23:30be made. Chum, there's something else to what we have Another acquaintance on
- 23:37his trainer, Jigga men Tone Old Home Week. Yeah, but what kind
- 23:44of pitch you're making my I don't know yet, but I wouldn't close that
- 23:49door, missus beating race mind if we go in mine, of course,
- 23:56I'm mind. Sorry we're going in anyway. You better stay with us.
- 24:00Yeah, all right, look at up coyles. She's missus slug. Yes,
- 24:03And the next move would have been a carrier to the rear platform and
- 24:06toss her off the train, wouldn't it. Missus beating my own daughter,
- 24:11You're insane. Not your daughter, missus beating your stepdaughter. Mary is fifteen
- 24:15years old and you weren't married to her father until nineteen thirty eight. Figure
- 24:18it for yourself. You'll get out of here. What was the motive your
- 24:22husband's will leaving everything to the girl. You've fought with your husband, didn't
- 24:26you because he objected to roxy Clock using his schooner as a gambling ship,
- 24:30because he was going to revoke the chrotter. You didn't like that, did
- 24:34you. Missus beating was letting too much easy money get away, so you
- 24:40murdered your husband. You're just talking. You don't know that. I know
- 24:45you killed roxy Clock. You killed him because he didn't like being implicated and
- 24:49was going to talk. I know you've killed him because you burned your pies
- 24:52that day. The good cook won't burn pies, Missus beating, not unless
- 24:56she leaves them suddenly to kill a man. Perhaps get some water for the
- 25:02girl mark She should have plenty to say when she comes to you. Ain't
- 25:04getting water from nobody? Move back before this thing in my hand starts talking
- 25:08about time you got here? Sorry, Mark, I missed on this one.
- 25:12So you thought you'd cut in, did you? Jigger? What are
- 25:15we gonna do? Jigger? We can't shoot them right here? No,
- 25:18but I can do the same to them that you could do the kid.
- 25:22I owe this guy something anyway? Too slow again, jigger? Yeah?
- 25:27Well if she if stuck right, man, this time jiggers, jag is
- 25:36up. Don't try to get away, lady? Where did you find that
- 25:40pistol? Mark must belong to the lady is in this open bag right here.
- 25:44All I had it though, was rich for it? Ironic if it
- 25:45turns out to be the gun that killed Beating and Roxy Clark want it here.
- 25:48I'll get the water for the girl from this sing Hey, get on
- 25:52some race. This has been a funny deal. We started out to find
- 25:57a guy in a boat. We never got near rita one of'em?
- 26:00Rates? What's going on? Give me a handlet this girl? Will your
- 26:03baby? You smell good? Race? Never mind the perfume. What's been
- 26:11happening? Something rather unpleasant? Baby, but you know before we reached New
- 26:17York, this trip may turn out to be most and joy. The Adventures
- 26:38of Frank Ray, starring Paul d Above with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan comes
- 26:42to you from Hollywood. Others heard into night's cast were Frank Lovejoy, Williams,
- 26:47Herbert William Baia, Bill Johnstone, and Michael Anne Barrett. This series
- 26:52is written and directed by Buckley Angel and Joel Murcot. The music is composed

- 27:00Next week we're another dramatic chapter in the Adventures of Frank Ray. Michael
- 27:06Roy speaking. This is a Bruce Elves production. Welcome back. While those
- 27:37who live in the South, places like Tennessee in Florida, We'll tell you
- 27:42that the Brooklyn accent is not an uncommon sound at all in the modern South.
- 27:52It may even a little more unusual in the nineteen fifties, but certainly
- 27:57not today. Now we turned a listener comments and feedback, and we start
- 28:04with an email from Joan who writes in Hi Adam, I like Tom Collins
- 28:11as Frank Race debate best and I never had any trouble understanding him. This
- 28:18was in regards to a listener question or suggestion that Paul de bov was the
- 28:26better Frank race. While we did ask listeners on Facebook. The result after
- 28:32a week and I pinned it to the top of the Facebook page so it
- 28:34wouldn't get buried under show announcements and things like that. We had three votes
- 28:41for Tom Collins and one vote that they were equally Willie Good and no votes
- 28:47for Paul to Bov. So Tom Collins wins among those who stayed a preference,
- 28:52but it may not have been the most scintillating debate among our listeners.
- 29:00Speaking of Tom Collins, we do have a question over on Twitter. De
- 29:03Coody says which came first, the actor or the drink? The answer is
- 29:12the drink. The drink Tom Collins actually was first made in eighteen seventy six.
- 29:26Tom Collins, the actor was born in nineteen thirteen. His birth name
- 29:33was Beryl William Collins, so it's easy to see how he might need a
- 29:38nickname. Beryl is not perhaps the most b e r y l most popular
- 29:47name. How he arrived at Tom. I don't know. Bill would seem
- 29:49to be a more natural nickname Tom Collins. It was and that's what he
- 29:56worked under. I think so much. Sure you're qu and that'll do it
- 30:00for today. We'll be back tomorrow with a life in your hands, and
- 30:07then join us back here next Monday for another episode of Frank Race. In
- 30:11the meanwhile, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net,
