Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Previously, on Night of the Living Dead, the farmhouse turned
- 0:08Speaker 1: fortress became a powder cake, and Ben was the man
- 0:11Speaker 1: holding the match. Harry Cooper clawed for control, Ben demanded respect.
- 0:17Speaker 1: The dead just wanted flesh, and when Fear took the
- 0:21Speaker 1: wheel out on that lonely road, the truck burned, Hope died,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and Sunrise started to look a lot like Judgment Act three,
- 0:32Speaker 1: where the masks fall, the guns come out, and Romero
- 0:36Speaker 1: proves the real monster was America. All along Act three,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the cellar door swings open. Helen and Harry step into
- 0:47Speaker 1: the hallway, faltering. They peer through the entrance way into
- 0:51Speaker 1: the living room. Harry, standing behind his wife, is hostile,
- 0:56Speaker 1: partially due to anger with himself because he has renigged
- 0:58Speaker 1: on his decision about the cell Helen, too, is overwrought
- 1:03Speaker 1: due to the emotional effect of the recent argument and
- 1:05Speaker 1: to the fact that she's about to meet strange people
- 1:07Speaker 1: in an anxious circumstance. But only Tom and Barbara are
- 1:11Speaker 1: in the living room, and Barbara, overcome with nervous exhaustion,
- 1:15Speaker 1: is sleeping fitfully on the couch.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We can see the broadcast. I think if the TV works,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I have to go help Ben.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Helen has gone immediately to Barbara, looks down at her sympathetically,
- 1:27Speaker 1: brushes back her hair and pulls the overcoat around her shoulders.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Poor thing. She must have been through a lot.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Harry, during these moments, has been flitting anxiously all over
- 1:38Speaker 1: the house, from door to window, to kitchen to living room,
- 1:42Speaker 1: checking out the actual degree of security and worrying about
- 1:45Speaker 1: imminence of attack at any second.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I think her brother was killed out there.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Tom, Hey, Tom, you gonna give me a hand with
- 1:54Speaker 4: this day.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Tom startles, aware of his procrastination, and bolts for the
- 1:58Speaker 1: upstairs to help Ben. Harry, pausing momentarily in his anxiety,
- 2:02Speaker 1: comes over to where his wife is looking after Barbara.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Her brother was killed.
- 2:06Speaker 5: This place is ridiculous. There's a million week spots up here.
- 2:11Speaker 1: We hear sounds from upstairs of Tom and Ben struggling
- 2:13Speaker 1: with the television set. They are making their way down
- 2:16Speaker 1: the steps.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I don't care, there's people up here. Why don't you
- 2:21Speaker 3: do something to help somebody.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Harry, not really hearing her, is staring once more into
- 2:26Speaker 1: the gloom outside.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I can't see a damn thing out there. There could
- 2:30Speaker 5: be fifty million of those things. I can't see a thing.
- 2:33Speaker 5: That's how much good these windows to us.
- 2:34Speaker 1: The truck driver, who with Tom, has reached the landing
- 2:37Speaker 1: with the heavy television set, has heard the last part
- 2:40Speaker 1: of Harry's remark. He glowers even as he moves with
- 2:44Speaker 1: his end of the burden, but says nothing. As he
- 2:47Speaker 1: and Tom gingerly deposit the TV in the center of
- 2:49Speaker 1: the room, They hunt for an outlet, find it, then
- 2:53Speaker 1: slide and walk the set until the court is close
- 2:56Speaker 1: enough to be plugged in. Ben kneels behind the set
- 2:59Speaker 1: to plug in the.
- 2:59Speaker 6: Cour Wake the girl up.
- 3:01Speaker 5: There's gonna be a thing on the tube. She might
- 3:04Speaker 5: as well know where she stands. I don't want anybody's
- 3:08Speaker 5: life on my hands, Harry.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Stop acting like a child.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I don't want to hear nothing else from you, mister.
- 3:14Speaker 4: If you stay up here, you take your orders from me,
- 3:16Speaker 4: and that includes leaving that girl alone.
- 3:19Speaker 6: She needs rest.
- 3:22Speaker 4: She's just about out of her head as it is now,
- 3:24Speaker 4: So now we're gonna just let her sleep at all,
- 3:27Speaker 4: and nobody's gonna touch her unless I say so.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Ben stares Harry down for at least a moment to
- 3:33Speaker 1: ascertain that he is at least temporarily silenced. Then his
- 3:36Speaker 1: hand plunges immediately to the television set. He snaps it on.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The occupants of the room jockey for vantage points, and
- 3:43Speaker 1: there are abated few seconds of dead silence as they
- 3:46Speaker 1: all wait to see if the set will actually warm up.
- 3:49Speaker 1: All eyes around the tube. A hiss begins, increases in volume.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Ben cranks the volume all the way. A glowing band
- 3:57Speaker 1: appears and spreads, filling the screen.
- 3:59Speaker 3: It's on, It's on.
- 4:01Speaker 1: There are murmurs of excitement and anticipation, but the tube
- 4:05Speaker 1: only shows nothing, no picture, no sound, just the glow
- 4:09Speaker 1: and hiss of the tube. Ben's hand raises the tuning dial.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Through the clicks of the various stations.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Play with the rabbit ears will you be able.
- 4:16Speaker 1: To get something, then fusses with horizontal and vertical, with
- 4:19Speaker 1: brightness and contrast. On one station he finally gets sound.
- 4:24Speaker 1: He adjusts the volume, the picture tumbles, he plays with
- 4:27Speaker 1: it and finally brings it in full screen. Is a
- 4:30Speaker 1: commentator in the middle of a news report. The people
- 4:34Speaker 1: in the room settle back.
- 4:35Speaker 7: To listen, assign little credibility to the theory that this onslaught
- 4:39Speaker 7: is a product of a mass hysteria. Authorities advise upmost
- 4:43Speaker 7: caution until the menace can be brought under absolute control.
- 4:47Speaker 7: Eyewitness accounts have been investigated and documented. Corpses of vanquished
- 4:51Speaker 7: aggressors are presently being examined by medical pathologists, but autops
- 4:55Speaker 7: the efforts have been hampered by the mutilated condition of
- 4:58Speaker 7: these corpses. Secure measures instituted in metropolitan areas include enforced
- 5:03Speaker 7: curfews and safety patrols by armed personnel. Citizens are urged
- 5:08Speaker 7: to remain in their homes. Those who ignore this warning
- 5:11Speaker 7: expose themselves to intense danger from the aggressors themselves and
- 5:15Speaker 7: from armed citizenry, whose impulse may be to shoot first
- 5:19Speaker 7: and ask questions later.
- 5:21Speaker 1: During the telecast, there are mixed feelings and reactions, but
- 5:24Speaker 1: these responses are sporadic and infrequent. Predominant mood of all
- 5:28Speaker 1: involved is to learn as much as possible from the telecast.
- 5:31Speaker 7: Rural or otherwise isolated dwellings have most frequently been the
- 5:35Speaker 7: objective of frenzied concerted attack. Isolated families are in extreme danger.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Escape attempts should be made in heavily armed groups and
- 5:44Speaker 7: by motor vehicle if possible. Appraise your situation carefully. Before
- 5:48Speaker 7: deciding upon an escape tactic. Fire is an effective weapon.
- 5:53Speaker 7: These beings are highly flammable. Escape groups should strike out
- 5:57Speaker 7: for the nearest urban community. Manned Events outposts have been
- 6:01Speaker 7: established on major arteries leading into all communities. These outposts
- 6:05Speaker 7: are equipped to defend refugees and to offer medical and
- 6:08Speaker 7: surgical assistance. Beliefs and vigilante groups are in the process
- 6:12Speaker 7: of combing remote areas and search and destroy missions against
- 6:16Speaker 7: all aggressors. These patrols are attempting to evacuate isolated families,
- 6:21Speaker 7: but rescue efforts are proceeding slowly due to the increased
- 6:25Speaker 7: danger of nightfall and the sheer enormity of the task.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Rescue for those in isolated circumstances is highly undependable. You
- 6:33Speaker 7: should not wait for a rescue party unless there is
- 6:36Speaker 7: no possibility of escape. If you are few against many,
- 6:40Speaker 7: you will almost certainly be overcome. The aggressors are rational
- 6:44Speaker 7: and demented. Their sole urge is the quest for human flesh.
- 6:49Speaker 7: Sheriff Conan W. McClelland of the county Department of Public
- 6:52Speaker 7: Protection was interviewed minutes after he and his vigil anti
- 6:55Speaker 7: patrol had vanquished several of the aggressors. We bring you
- 6:59Speaker 7: now the results of that interview.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Fade and segue to videotape. Interview open on wide shot
- 7:05Speaker 1: a night scene. Dense woods, posted guards maintain the periphery
- 7:09Speaker 1: of a small clearing. Sporadic gunfire can be heard in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the distance, some of the men's smoke, some talk in groups.
- 7:16Speaker 1: The area is illumined by a large bonfire. Sheriff mc
- 7:20Speaker 1: clelland is the focal figure. Medium close up, so that
- 7:23Speaker 1: as he talks we catch glimpses of activity in the background.
- 7:27Speaker 1: He is shouting commands, supervising defense measures and the burning
- 7:30Speaker 1: of the bodies, at the same time trying to answer
- 7:33Speaker 1: reporters questions. We cut or zoom closer. McClelland is pacing around,
- 7:38Speaker 1: not straying too far because a Lavalier microphone is hanging
- 7:41Speaker 1: on a cord around his neck. The crackle of the bonfire,
- 7:45Speaker 1: the shouts and bustle of activity can be constantly heard
- 7:48Speaker 1: behind his commentary. As he talks, he frequently turns away,
- 7:52Speaker 1: his primary concern being his efforts in dealing with the
- 7:55Speaker 1: aggressors and controlling his search party.
- 7:58Speaker 8: Here will this is a rough country for an evening hike,
- 8:03Speaker 8: but things ain't going too badly. The men are taking
- 8:06Speaker 8: it pretty well. We killed nineteen of them today right
- 8:10Speaker 8: around this general area. These last three we found trying
- 8:14Speaker 8: to claw their way into an abandoned mind. Shit, nobody
- 8:18Speaker 8: in there, but these things just pounding and clawing and
- 8:21Speaker 8: trying to bust their way in. It's funny in a way.
- 8:25Speaker 8: What's I thought there was people in there? We heard
- 8:28Speaker 8: the record, came blasted them down.
- 8:31Speaker 1: What's your opinion?
- 8:32Speaker 8: Then?
- 8:32Speaker 1: Can we defeat these things?
- 8:33Speaker 8: I ain't no problem. The only problem is whether we
- 8:37Speaker 8: can get to them before they kill off all these people.
- 8:40Speaker 8: But me and my men we can handle them.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Okay.
- 8:43Speaker 8: We ain't lost nobody or suffered any casualties. I got
- 8:47Speaker 8: to do is shoot for the eyes. You can tell
- 8:50Speaker 8: anybody out there, all you gotta do is draw a shot,
- 8:53Speaker 8: beat and shoot for the eyes. Or he beat them
- 8:57Speaker 8: down and loped their heads.
- 8:58Speaker 7: Off, then I'd have a decent chance, even if I
- 9:01Speaker 7: was surrounded by two or three of them.
- 9:02Speaker 8: Or if you had yourself a club or a good torch,
- 9:06Speaker 8: you can home off for learn.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Them to death.
- 9:07Speaker 8: They catch fire like nothing, go up like wax paper.
- 9:11Speaker 8: But the best thing is to shoot them in the eyes.
- 9:14Speaker 8: You don't wait for us to rescue you, because if
- 9:17Speaker 8: it gets you too far out numbered, you've had it.
- 9:20Speaker 8: And we're doing our best. But we only got so
- 9:23Speaker 8: many men and a whole lot of open country to come.
- 9:26Speaker 7: But you think you can bring these things under control.
- 9:28Speaker 8: Oh, we got things in our favor. Now, it's only
- 9:31Speaker 8: a question of time. Wait for certain how many there
- 9:34Speaker 8: are them things, But we know that when we find them,
- 9:37Speaker 8: we're going to be able to kill them. So it's
- 9:39Speaker 8: a matter of time. They're weak, but there are plenty
- 9:43Speaker 8: of them, and so don't wait for no rescue party.
- 9:46Speaker 8: Arm yourself to the teeth, get together in a group
- 9:49Speaker 8: and try and make it to a rescue station. That's
- 9:51Speaker 8: the best way. But if you're loone, you got to
- 9:54Speaker 8: sit stock still, wait for help, and we'll try like
- 9:58Speaker 8: hell to get there before they Oh, tail, I'm gonna
- 10:02Speaker 8: shoot for the eyes. That'll stop them.
- 10:05Speaker 6: Load jobbers. You have heard Sheriff Conan W.
- 10:09Speaker 7: McClellan for the County Department of Public Protection. This is
- 10:12Speaker 7: your civil defense emergency network with reports every hour on
- 10:16Speaker 7: the hour for the duration of this emergency. Remain in
- 10:19Speaker 7: your homes, keep all doors and windows locked, do not
- 10:23Speaker 7: under any.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Circle, then reaches over and clicks off the television.
- 10:26Speaker 2: What'd you click it off for?
- 10:27Speaker 6: Man said, they only come on every hour. We heard
- 10:30Speaker 6: all we need to know. We got to get out of.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Here, he said. The rescue stations have doctors and medical supplies.
- 10:36Speaker 3: If we could get there, they could help Karen.
- 10:40Speaker 6: How are we going to bust out of here?
- 10:41Speaker 5: We got a sick kid, two women, one of them
- 10:44Speaker 5: out of her head, and three men, and there's a
- 10:47Speaker 5: million of them things outside.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Willard has a checkpoint there about about seventeen miles from here.
- 10:53Speaker 6: Well you from here? You noticed area? Yeah?
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I was working in the cemetery across the road.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I'm the caretaker. Two of them things attacked me and
- 11:05Speaker 2: I high tailed it over here. Found everybody wiped out
- 11:13Speaker 2: not too long after. These other people fought their way
- 11:15Speaker 2: in here, and I was scared, but I opened the
- 11:19Speaker 2: basement door and I let them in.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Unbeknownst to everybody else, Barbara has been sitting up listening.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Now she speaks, startling them and gathering their attention. She
- 11:29Speaker 1: has come down from her hysteria, but it's very weak.
- 11:33Speaker 1: You work in the cemetery. My brother is over there.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You poor thing. My girl is hurt too. We have
- 11:42Speaker 3: to get to a rescue station. The television told us
- 11:46Speaker 3: we have to try and escape.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Well, I think we ought to stick right here and
- 11:49Speaker 5: wait for a rescue park. He said, if you are
- 11:51Speaker 5: few against many, you don't have a chance. We can't
- 11:55Speaker 5: tramp sementine miles through those things.
- 11:57Speaker 6: He ain't got to tramp what trust outside the door?
- 12:00Speaker 1: This stops, Harry. There is a moment of silence.
- 12:04Speaker 4: But uh, I'm just about out of gas. But there's
- 12:07Speaker 4: a pump, need a shed outside, it's just locked.
- 12:12Speaker 6: The key ought to be around somewhere. There's a big
- 12:14Speaker 6: key ring in the basement.
- 12:16Speaker 5: I'm gonna go. Look the keys are labeled.
- 12:18Speaker 6: Is there a fruit seller? Yeah, Why, we're gonna need
- 12:22Speaker 6: lots of jars.
- 12:23Speaker 4: We can make Molotov cocktails, scare those things back, and
- 12:26Speaker 4: then fight our way to the pump and.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Gas up the truck.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Oh, we're gonna need kerosene. There's a jug in the
- 12:31Speaker 2: basement too.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Barbara and I can help. We can rip up sheets
- 12:34Speaker 3: and things.
- 12:35Speaker 9: Here's the key ring. The pump kare is marked with
- 12:37Speaker 9: a piece of tape. Good that settles that question. But
- 12:41Speaker 9: we should take a crow bar anyway. In case the
- 12:44Speaker 9: key don't work. The crowbar can double this weapon for
- 12:46Speaker 9: whoever goes with me.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But I don't want to get all the way out
- 12:48Speaker 4: there and find out that pump won't open.
- 12:50Speaker 6: All go.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you and me can fight our way to the pump.
- 12:54Speaker 2: The women can stay in the cellar and take care
- 12:56Speaker 2: of the kid. We should have a stretcher. Barbara and
- 12:59Speaker 2: Helen can do that.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Harry, you're gonna have to guard the upstairs once we
- 13:03Speaker 4: onboard the door. Those things can get in here easy.
- 13:05Speaker 4: But me and Tom got to get back in here too.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Once we get back with the truck. You got to
- 13:10Speaker 4: guard the door and unlock it for us. Then we'll
- 13:13Speaker 4: board it up as fast as we can because those
- 13:15Speaker 4: things are gonna come fast.
- 13:16Speaker 6: On our heels.
- 13:16Speaker 4: All right now, if we don't get back, well, then
- 13:21Speaker 4: you'll be able to see from.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Upstairs, and you can.
- 13:23Speaker 4: You can barricade the door again and go to the basement,
- 13:25Speaker 4: and then you can just sit down there and wait
- 13:27Speaker 4: for your rescue party.
- 13:30Speaker 5: I want the gun. Then it's the best thing for
- 13:32Speaker 5: me to year is you're you're not gonna have time.
- 13:34Speaker 6: To stop it.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Aim or I'm keeping this gun nobody else lays a
- 13:38Speaker 4: hand on it.
- 13:38Speaker 6: I found it in his mine. You don't care what
- 13:41Speaker 6: happens to us.
- 13:43Speaker 5: How do we know you and time won't just take
- 13:45Speaker 5: the truck and cut out.
- 13:49Speaker 4: That's the chance you're gonna have to take. If we
- 13:52Speaker 4: cut out, you'll have your goddamn basement. Like you be
- 13:55Speaker 4: crying about this whole time.
- 13:57Speaker 3: We're gonna die here if we don't all work together.
- 14:01Speaker 3: My brother's out there. Maybe we can get him and
- 14:04Speaker 3: bring him back.
- 14:05Speaker 6: He's just wounded. He'll be okay.
- 14:08Speaker 3: That's okay, honey, we'll be all right. Maybe your brother
- 14:12Speaker 3: will be two.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Let's get busy. We've got a lot to do if
- 14:15Speaker 4: we're gonna bust out of here.
- 14:17Speaker 1: He is on his feet, taking command. We fade out
- 14:19Speaker 1: of the scene, fade into a new scene, completion of
- 14:22Speaker 1: escape preparations. Tom's pouring kerosene into fruit jars. Helen is
- 14:27Speaker 1: dipping twisted rag fuses and kerosene in the bottom of
- 14:30Speaker 1: a dish. Barbara comes from the kitchen with more jars,
- 14:33Speaker 1: drying them on the outside and putting them on the table.
- 14:36Speaker 1: She and Helen begin working the kerosene soaked fuses through
- 14:39Speaker 1: the holes, which Thomas cut from the jar lids. Between
- 14:42Speaker 1: them is a crude stretcher made of broomsticks and torn sheets,
- 14:46Speaker 1: This presumably for the wounded girl Karen. The television is off,
- 14:50Speaker 1: but the radio drones lowly repeating the recorded message. The
- 14:54Speaker 1: radio is on as a monitor only that they might
- 14:57Speaker 1: work and still keep up with news that may affect
- 14:59Speaker 1: their situation.
- 15:00Speaker 10: I don't know what to think about my brother. We
- 15:03Speaker 10: have to get out of here a bit. Maybe we'll
- 15:06Speaker 10: find him in Willard. Maybe he was able to crawl
- 15:08Speaker 10: to the car and get away.
- 15:10Speaker 3: We have to think of ourselves now. It's hard for you,
- 15:14Speaker 3: but it's all we can do. My girl is getting
- 15:17Speaker 3: worse too. I have to get her a doctor.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Roomsticks and belt buckles and old sheets. She's told okay,
- 15:28Speaker 5: I always hated the boy scouts.
- 15:30Speaker 6: It'll be okay. Is there anything open upstairs?
- 15:34Speaker 5: Some windows in the room. Spinner's unfastening the doors.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Now, we'll throw the cocktails from upstairs. Just just splash
- 15:43Speaker 2: the whole area with them. That you keep most of
- 15:45Speaker 2: them away while we break for the truck.
- 15:47Speaker 3: We're ready. Here comes Ben now.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Ben, the gun strapped around his back, is carrying a
- 15:52Speaker 1: crowbar and claw hammer. He walks around checking preparations, smiles
- 15:56Speaker 1: at Barbara, glad to see she's a little better.
- 16:00Speaker 4: All right, things are ready up there now, Me and
- 16:03Speaker 4: Tom on board the front door.
- 16:06Speaker 6: Harry, you take the two women upstairs. Carry the maltop
- 16:09Speaker 6: cocktails with you.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Soon as the door's unbarred, we gonna throw those things
- 16:13Speaker 4: all over the place.
- 16:14Speaker 6: Make sure they catch fire. Good. Then the women bust
- 16:17Speaker 6: out here and getting the cellar. Don't forget to stretcher
- 16:19Speaker 6: all right.
- 16:21Speaker 4: When we hear footsteps on the stairs, me and Tom
- 16:23Speaker 4: will be gone.
- 16:25Speaker 6: He'd be up to you. Harry. You gotta wash this door.
- 16:28Speaker 6: Got yourself a good length of pipe. I have a
- 16:30Speaker 6: pitch fork. Good, good, Okay.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Tom and Ben go over to the door. The others garry, fruit, jars, etc.
- 16:38Speaker 1: And sneak quietly to the unboarded room upstairs. Tom and
- 16:42Speaker 1: Ben are left alone. Tom is soaking a table leg
- 16:45Speaker 1: and curiousene that it's alighted for use as a torch.
- 16:48Speaker 1: They fall to work on the door, the painstaking work
- 16:51Speaker 1: of quietly undoing the barricade. They do not want to
- 16:54Speaker 1: give alarm to the lurking things outside. With crowbar and
- 16:58Speaker 1: claw hammer, very careful both men working on each separate
- 17:02Speaker 1: piece of lumber, they undo the barricade. Each nail creek
- 17:06Speaker 1: is a menace. They are alert to the constant danger.
- 17:10Speaker 1: They finish and watch, posting themselves anxiously by the door.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Shadowy figures lurk in the dark outside. Tom and Ben
- 17:18Speaker 1: wait for the Molotov shower to begin. A cry is heard,
- 17:22Speaker 1: A window flies open to the first fiery blaze lights
- 17:25Speaker 1: in the yard. More follow, some aimed for the creatures themselves.
- 17:29Speaker 1: One or two catch fire, the others start to back away.
- 17:32Speaker 1: The entire field is lit up. Bons shower from.
- 17:36Speaker 5: Upstairs that's open run far.
- 17:39Speaker 1: His voice echoes as Tom and Ben burst into the yard.
- 17:43Speaker 1: They are armed with torches and with a gun. They
- 17:45Speaker 1: leap into the truck. Tom plunges a torch into the
- 17:48Speaker 1: chest of an attacker Block, who immediately catches fire and
- 17:51Speaker 1: goes down in blaze. Clutching the trush. The truck starts
- 17:56Speaker 1: up in korems and a hue turn for the old shed.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Attackers fall away. It starts out. Ben aimes fires several shots,
- 18:03Speaker 1: most miss. The truck jounces toward the gas pump across
- 18:06Speaker 1: the yard, but one creature goes down at the front
- 18:09Speaker 1: of the gas pump near the old shed. Tom and
- 18:12Speaker 1: Ben leap out. Attackers are starting to make their way
- 18:15Speaker 1: to them from across the yard. Tom fumbles with the
- 18:18Speaker 1: key to the locked pump. Ben shoves him back hurriedly
- 18:22Speaker 1: aims the guy. The gun fires, blowing the locks of pieces.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Gas burts out all over the place. Creatures advance. Gas
- 18:30Speaker 1: still spurting, Tom cramped the nozzle into the mouth of
- 18:33Speaker 1: the gas tank in the back of the truck. Ben
- 18:36Speaker 1: crouches and levels off with his weapon. An approaching attacker
- 18:39Speaker 1: goes down, but more are coming in. Tom's torch has
- 18:43Speaker 1: inadvertently set fire to the Dow's truck. The flames begin
- 18:46Speaker 1: to lick and spread. The attackers gather in force ever closer.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Tom leaps into the flaming truck. It skids and lurches
- 18:54Speaker 1: across the yard. Ben shouts to no affair. The flaming
- 18:58Speaker 1: truck speeds away, driven by the panic Tom. Several of
- 19:01Speaker 1: the things are upon Ben. He crashes and pounds them
- 19:04Speaker 1: with torch and god Ignoring Tom, he has to try
- 19:07Speaker 1: and fight his way back to the house. From inside
- 19:11Speaker 1: the house, the panicked and cowardly Harry has only seen
- 19:14Speaker 1: pieces of the action. He has been darting back and
- 19:17Speaker 1: forth from door to window and trying to see what
- 19:19Speaker 1: has been happening outside. From his viewpoint. The escape attempt
- 19:23Speaker 1: has met with total doom. He has seen the truck
- 19:26Speaker 1: catch fire, driven away by Tom. Ben appears to be overwhelmed.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Harry runs again to the door. He sees the truck
- 19:34Speaker 1: completely in flames, speeding away from the house toward a
- 19:36Speaker 1: small rise back to the kitchen window. Ben is about
- 19:40Speaker 1: to be overcome things all around him. Harry does not
- 19:44Speaker 1: see as Tom jumps from the burning truck to be
- 19:46Speaker 1: seized by attacking Ghules. The truck, continuably unmanned from the
- 19:50Speaker 1: far rise and explodes violently, the noise and flames shattering
- 19:55Speaker 1: the night. Several Ghuls are at the front door, trying
- 19:58Speaker 1: to beat their way into the house. From inside, Harry
- 20:01Speaker 1: is in complete tone. He cannot hold out. All is lost.
- 20:06Speaker 1: He pants and bolts for the cellar, but Ben has
- 20:10Speaker 1: slugged his way through the attackers on the porch.
- 20:13Speaker 8: Look it.
- 20:16Speaker 1: He is pounding for admission at the front door. He
- 20:20Speaker 1: turns and with a powerful lunch, kicks the last attacker
- 20:23Speaker 1: off the porch. On the rebound, he plows his shoulder
- 20:27Speaker 1: against the door. It crashes open, the lock broken, and
- 20:30Speaker 1: Ben bursts in time to catch Harry at the cellar door,
- 20:33Speaker 1: But there is no time. Ben frantically turns to reboarding
- 20:37Speaker 1: the door. His eyes meet Harry's for an instant, then
- 20:40Speaker 1: they both fall to work. They board up the door.
- 20:42Speaker 1: They are temporarily safe. They turn and look at each other,
- 20:46Speaker 1: sweat streaming from each face. Harry knows what is coming.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Ben's fist crashes against Harry's face. He is driven back,
- 20:53Speaker 1: one punch following another until Ben corns him, Clenching his
- 20:57Speaker 1: lapels against the wall. Ben's words spit out, each word
- 21:01Speaker 1: punctuated by an additional slam of Harry against the wall.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Right now, it's time to cross some water. I'll kill you.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Ben slams him one final time. He slides down the wall,
- 21:15Speaker 1: crumples on the floor. His face is swollen, he is
- 21:18Speaker 1: streaming blood. Ben is already at the cellar door.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Come on, it's us, It's all over. Thomas dead fade out.
- 21:30Speaker 1: The survivors are gathered in the living room. Barbara and
- 21:33Speaker 1: Helen are slumped on the sofa, overwhelming mood of hopelessness
- 21:37Speaker 1: and despair. Harry sulks in a corner, his head slung back,
- 21:42Speaker 1: his face swollen. He is holding an ice pack against
- 21:44Speaker 1: his eye. His good eye follows Ben, who is pacing
- 21:48Speaker 1: about the room. Where Ben's pacing takes him to the
- 21:50Speaker 1: kitchen or to some area out of Harry's sight. The
- 21:53Speaker 1: good eye, nervously relaxing. Ben's movements make virtually the only sound.
- 21:59Speaker 1: He is checking the fences by force of old habit,
- 22:01Speaker 1: rather than hope. The rifle is slung on his back.
- 22:05Speaker 1: For a long time we dwell on the scene, on
- 22:08Speaker 1: the absolute dejectedness of the prisoners within the barricaded house.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Ben paces from door to kitchen to window. He starts
- 22:15Speaker 1: to go upstairs, stops, checks himself, goes to the door again.
- 22:20Speaker 1: He looks at his watch.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Ten minutes to three. There'll be another broadcast in ten minutes.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Nobody says anything. Ben pulls back the curtain. His eyes
- 22:29Speaker 1: grow suddenly wide, but he watches. For a long moment.
- 22:33Speaker 1: We see his view of the outside. There are many
- 22:36Speaker 1: ghuls lurking in the shadows of the hanging trees. Some
- 22:40Speaker 1: of the things are in the open, much nearer to
- 22:42Speaker 1: the house than they dared come before. Remains of charred
- 22:46Speaker 1: bodies are dimly apparent from various parts of the lawn,
- 22:50Speaker 1: but Ben's eyes are fastened on a more grisly scene
- 22:53Speaker 1: at the engine lock in the moonlight, several ghuls devouring
- 22:57Speaker 1: what had once been tomed. They rip tear into aspects
- 23:01Speaker 1: of his body, ghouls teeth biting into Tom's arms and hands.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Ben stares, fascinated, and the pulsed with a convulsive movement.
- 23:11Speaker 1: His fingers release the curtain. He turns, shaken and faces
- 23:15Speaker 1: the others, beads of perspiration dripping from his forehead.
- 23:21Speaker 6: Don I know, none of you look out there. You
- 23:25Speaker 6: won't like what you see.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Harry's good eye fastens on. Ben watches him, satisfied and
- 23:31Speaker 1: contemptuous to see the big man weaken. Ben moves for
- 23:34Speaker 1: the television, clicks it on. Barber's scream pierces the Ben
- 23:40Speaker 1: leaps back from the teleision. She is on her feet,
- 23:43Speaker 1: screaming uncontrollably.
- 23:45Speaker 8: Never get here, none of us.
- 23:49Speaker 3: We'll never get out of her.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Lie, shine, shine, Before anyone can move to her, she
- 24:06Speaker 1: chokes up as suddenly she began, and slumps, sobbing violently
- 24:10Speaker 1: to the couch, her face buried in her hands. Helen
- 24:15Speaker 1: tries to soothe her, but great sobs come racking from
- 24:18Speaker 1: deep within. She grows gradually quiet. The sobs diminish, but
- 24:23Speaker 1: she remains slumped on the couch, her face covered with
- 24:26Speaker 1: her hands. Helen covers her with the overcoat, but this
- 24:29Speaker 1: action seems futile. Barbara makes no movement whatsoever. Ben allows
- 24:35Speaker 1: himself to sink very slowly into a chair in front
- 24:37Speaker 1: of the TV. Harry's good eye goes from Barbara to Ben.
- 24:42Speaker 1: His eye fastens on the gun, which Ben lowers but
- 24:45Speaker 1: first to the floor. Leans across his legs. Ben threads
- 24:49Speaker 1: his arm through the fringe sling and maintains his grip
- 24:52Speaker 1: on the four piece.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Harry watches, Ah, I'm going to the cellar to take
- 24:58Speaker 3: care of Karen. Come on, honey, come and talk to me.
- 25:04Speaker 3: It will make you feel better.
- 25:06Speaker 1: But Barbara makes no response. Helen turns and starts for
- 25:09Speaker 1: the cellar door. She has to squeeze past Harry's chair furtively,
- 25:14Speaker 1: his eye on Ben, Harry touches her and pulls her
- 25:17Speaker 1: towards him. She too watches Ben. She knows something is up.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Ben remains transfixed before the TV. He is lost in thought.
- 25:25Speaker 1: His mind drifts somewhere. There is nothing on the screen,
- 25:29Speaker 1: just a dull glow and low hiss over scanning lines
- 25:32Speaker 1: and static. He has turned the set on too early.
- 25:37Speaker 6: I've gotta get that gun. We can go to the cellar.
- 25:40Speaker 6: You have to help me.
- 25:41Speaker 1: He has let the ice pack come away from his eye.
- 25:44Speaker 1: We see it as swollen in blackened condition, and the
- 25:47Speaker 1: desperation on his face. Ben still gazes at the TV,
- 25:52Speaker 1: worried about the possibility that Ben might catch them in
- 25:54Speaker 1: the act, and not really sympathizing with Harry. Helen pulls away,
- 25:59Speaker 1: but she leans her to Harry's and whispers quickly.
- 26:02Speaker 3: I'm not going to help you. Haven't you had enough?
- 26:05Speaker 3: He'd kill us both.
- 26:07Speaker 1: She goes to the cellar and on the way has
- 26:09Speaker 1: to pass behind Ben's chair. She hesitates, her eyes fall
- 26:13Speaker 1: on the gun. The sling is wound around Ben's arm.
- 26:17Speaker 1: We study her face. It is not clear whether she
- 26:20Speaker 1: would have taken it or not, but she makes no attempt.
- 26:24Speaker 1: She opens the door and goes down into the cellar.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Harry's eye follows her as she leaves. As Helen reaches
- 26:31Speaker 1: the bottom of the cellar stairs, she looks up and
- 26:34Speaker 1: her face shows startlement, a shaken smile. Her daughter is
- 26:38Speaker 1: sitting up, propped on her elbows on the work bench
- 26:41Speaker 1: table Okaarin. She starts for her, but stops. There is
- 26:45Speaker 1: something strange. Her face turns slowly toward her. We see
- 26:50Speaker 1: the ghoulish look in her eye. She begins to rise slowly, terrifyingly,
- 26:58Speaker 1: her features grow tee. The coat that was her blanket
- 27:02Speaker 1: begins to fall away. Her eyes stare through Helen and
- 27:05Speaker 1: beyond her, slowly agonizingly. As he raises herself from the table, Helen, terrified,
- 27:13Speaker 1: begins to back away across the cellar. Her hand falls
- 27:16Speaker 1: on a knife. Her child creeps toward her. She moves
- 27:19Speaker 1: a large packing crate, trying to block her path, trying
- 27:23Speaker 1: to stave the confrontation, but she is too late. She springs.
- 27:28Speaker 1: It appears as though the knife will be driven into
- 27:29Speaker 1: her breast, but on the spring. We cut to the upstairs,
- 27:33Speaker 1: where simultaneously a scream pierces the room. An assault has begun.
- 27:40Speaker 1: The things are beginning to break into the house. They've
- 27:43Speaker 1: gotten into the den and are hammering at the barricaded door.
- 27:46Speaker 1: The walls are studying to come apart. Ben is on
- 27:50Speaker 1: his feet trying to reinforce the barricades with hammer and crowbar.
- 27:54Speaker 1: He works furiously.
- 27:55Speaker 8: Harry, Harry, go ahead over here.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Harry comes over behind Ben and instead of helping, rips
- 28:01Speaker 1: the gun from Ben's back. Holding the gun on Ben,
- 28:04Speaker 1: Harry backs toward the cellar. Ben turns around. Hannicked, the
- 28:08Speaker 1: things are breaking into the house.
- 28:10Speaker 5: What are you up to?
- 28:11Speaker 4: Man?
- 28:12Speaker 6: We gotta get these things out of the house.
- 28:13Speaker 5: Now we'll see who's going to show how.
- 28:16Speaker 6: I'm going to the cellar and you can ride up here,
- 28:19Speaker 6: you cray bastard.
- 28:20Speaker 1: His hand goes behind him to the cellar door, but
- 28:23Speaker 1: at that moment, the ghoulish Karen leaps upon him with
- 28:25Speaker 1: great thuds. Karen is at Harry's throat. Ben is able
- 28:30Speaker 1: to grab the gun. He levels off, trying to hit
- 28:32Speaker 1: the kid, but a sudden wrench of the two struggling
- 28:35Speaker 1: bodies and Ben misses. Harry screams. A great clot of
- 28:40Speaker 1: blood appears at his chest. Clutching the wound, he begins
- 28:43Speaker 1: to go down. He falls through the entranceway to the
- 28:46Speaker 1: cellar stairs. He reels, grabs the banister and begins to descend.
- 28:51Speaker 1: We see his view as he falls really head thirst
- 28:54Speaker 1: down the stairs. Ben, meantime, has flung the kid Karen
- 28:58Speaker 1: with one heave against the wall, but things have broken
- 29:01Speaker 1: into the house everywhere. The barricades are coming apart. Barbara,
- 29:06Speaker 1: with a hysteria of her Ben, has flung herself into
- 29:09Speaker 1: her attacks. She smashes a chair again front of the aggressors,
- 29:13Speaker 1: goes down. He smashes and smashes it on the floor
- 29:17Speaker 1: until there is nothing left of the chair. She winds
- 29:20Speaker 1: up still swinging, fighting with Ben against the things that
- 29:23Speaker 1: have come into the house. It's quite apparent that they
- 29:26Speaker 1: cannot hold out the attack. Rageously, they are overwhelmed. Ben
- 29:31Speaker 1: grabs Barbara and pulls her after him towards the cellar.
- 29:33Speaker 1: She is lashing and swinging, beating at an attacker even
- 29:37Speaker 1: as he drags her. Ben things open the door to
- 29:41Speaker 1: the cellar and Helen is at his throat. He brings
- 29:44Speaker 1: the gun up between their struggling bodies until the muzzle
- 29:47Speaker 1: it is against her throat and squeezes the trigger. She
- 29:50Speaker 1: is blown halfway across the room. Ben and Barbara run
- 29:53Speaker 1: down the stairs, but Harry is sprawled in a pool
- 29:56Speaker 1: of blood on the floor. He is dead. To rise.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Ben pushed Barbara back. She turned her head away. Ben
- 30:04Speaker 1: raises the gun and we study this as three evenly
- 30:07Speaker 1: spaced shots rip the room. Ben is almost glad to
- 30:11Speaker 1: kill Harry. He turns to Barbara, breathing hard. She collapses
- 30:14Speaker 1: against him and begins to sob. We hear faint pounding
- 30:18Speaker 1: against the barricaded cellar door, but it is holding the
- 30:22Speaker 1: creatures cannot get in. The screen is black. There are
- 30:27Speaker 1: sounds of birds, fainter sounds of dogs. Human voices fade
- 30:32Speaker 1: up quickly sunrise, the morning after the siege. The sky
- 30:37Speaker 1: is clear. The rising sun is bright and warm. There
- 30:42Speaker 1: is dew and the high grass of a meadow. Men
- 30:46Speaker 1: with dogs and guns reworking their way up from the
- 30:48Speaker 1: woods that surround the meadow. We do not see the
- 30:52Speaker 1: posse at first. We merely hear their sounds, shouts, muffled talk,
- 30:56Speaker 1: panting and straining of dogs against lecies share McClellan's posse.
- 31:02Speaker 1: A few men, some with German shepherds unleashes, finally come
- 31:06Speaker 1: up out of the woods and onto the edge of
- 31:07Speaker 1: the sunlit dewy meadow. The wet grass is damp in
- 31:10Speaker 1: the boots and trouser legs of the men McClelland is
- 31:14Speaker 1: perhaps the third man up from the surrounding thicket. He
- 31:18Speaker 1: is a heavy man, mustached, breathing hard because of his
- 31:21Speaker 1: weight and the difficult job of leading the posse through
- 31:23Speaker 1: the night. He is armed with shotgun and pistol and
- 31:27Speaker 1: a belt of ammunition strung over his shoulder. He pauses,
- 31:31Speaker 1: looks back into the woods and mops perspiration from his
- 31:34Speaker 1: brow with a bald up dirty handkerchief.
- 31:37Speaker 8: Come on, but steph loudly now. Never can't tell we'll
- 31:41Speaker 8: run into up here.
- 31:42Speaker 1: It costs a man just climbing up out of the woods.
- 31:45Speaker 1: The man wears an improvised sweatband, carries a rifle in
- 31:48Speaker 1: side arm, and has a walky talkie strapped on his back.
- 31:51Speaker 8: You keep it in touch with the squad cars, George, Yeah,
- 31:56Speaker 8: they know where we are.
- 31:57Speaker 5: They should be intercepting us at the house. Good.
- 32:00Speaker 8: These men is dog tired. They could use some rest
- 32:03Speaker 8: and hot coffee. Let's push you along now. The squad
- 32:07Speaker 8: cars will be waiting with coffee and sandwiches at the house.
- 32:10Speaker 1: The men push on across the field. Inside the house,
- 32:13Speaker 1: Ben and Barbara have been dozing on chairs in the basement.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Ben wakes abruptly, thinking he has heard something, but he
- 32:20Speaker 1: isn't sure. He sits up and listens more closely. From
- 32:25Speaker 1: far off, there's the sound of a dog. Ben listens
- 32:28Speaker 1: for a long time, but here's nothing more. Outside. The
- 32:33Speaker 1: meadow has become the apron of a cemetery, the one
- 32:36Speaker 1: Barbara and John had come to with the flowers for
- 32:38Speaker 1: their father. The posse is advancing, threading its way among
- 32:42Speaker 1: the grave markers. A man finds John's skeletal remains near
- 32:46Speaker 1: the spot where he had fallen. Down the dirt road
- 32:50Speaker 1: and up a short grade is Barbara's car with a
- 32:53Speaker 1: smashed window, and.
- 32:55Speaker 8: It looks like this guy's car or a fella never
- 32:59Speaker 8: had a chance.
- 33:01Speaker 1: The men pass through the cemetery and over the wall,
- 33:03Speaker 1: where several squad cars are waiting on the road. There
- 33:06Speaker 1: are also one or two motorcycle patrolmen. One of the
- 33:10Speaker 1: men dismounts and hails McClelland.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Hi, Kenny has things going.
- 33:15Speaker 1: McClelland advances and shakes hands, stops a while, mops his
- 33:19Speaker 1: brow again. The men begin to catch up and regroup.
- 33:23Speaker 1: The posse fills the bend in the narrow road.
- 33:26Speaker 8: He sure glad to see you, Phillis, Charlie. We've been
- 33:29Speaker 8: at it all night, but I don't want to break.
- 33:32Speaker 8: Can we get in that house over there? We might
- 33:34Speaker 8: be lolligagging around while somebody needs our help. We'll see
- 33:39Speaker 8: first in stop and get some coffee.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Anything you say, Connie.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Inside the house, Ben has sneaked up to the top
- 33:45Speaker 1: of the cellar stairs. He listens there very intently, not
- 33:49Speaker 1: wanting to open the door because creatures may still be
- 33:51Speaker 1: in the house this time, for sure. He hears gunshots
- 33:55Speaker 1: and a mumbled sound of what must be voices of
- 33:58Speaker 1: approaching men. There is even what sounds like a car engine.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Ben bolts excitedly down the stairs. Ben wakes the.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Girl, Barbara Barber here, honeyed it. There's men outside of
- 34:11Speaker 6: up I can hear. He must be here to rescue us.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Outside we see the cause of the gunshots. The Posse
- 34:17Speaker 1: is flushing out ghules from the pump house and surrounding area.
- 34:21Speaker 1: The squad cars have driven up. The posse is advancing
- 34:24Speaker 1: across the lawn guardedly toward the partially destroyed old farmhouse.
- 34:29Speaker 1: The men crouch and sneak up, slowly, keeping their eyes
- 34:31Speaker 1: fastened on the house. A loud sudden noise stops them.
- 34:35Speaker 1: They watch, stopped in their tracks.
- 34:38Speaker 8: Shoot for the eyes, boys, like I told you before,
- 34:41Speaker 8: always aim.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Right for the eyes inside, ready to shoot or swing.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Ben has slammed open the cellar door. The force of
- 34:48Speaker 1: his shoulder against the door has carried him into the
- 34:50Speaker 1: living room. Nothing only the ramshackle and destruction from the
- 34:54Speaker 1: recent siege. He edges his way through the twisted wreckage
- 34:58Speaker 1: and overturned furniture toward the There is no light in
- 35:02Speaker 1: the place. His hand finds what is left of the curtain.
- 35:05Speaker 1: He pulls it back and starts to peer out, but
- 35:09Speaker 1: a shot rings out. Ben reels driven back, a circle
- 35:12Speaker 1: of blood on his forehead right between his eyes. Barbara's
- 35:18Speaker 1: scream is heard from downstairs. Simultaneously, McLellan shouts, his face
- 35:23Speaker 1: flushed with anger.
- 35:24Speaker 8: Damn it, what your ship for?
- 35:26Speaker 1: I told you to be careful.
- 35:27Speaker 8: There might be people in there.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Nah, this place is demolish.
- 35:31Speaker 7: There ain't nobody in there.
- 35:32Speaker 2: I'm sure I heard the girls scream from maybe the basement.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Several men have advanced to kick in the front door.
- 35:39Speaker 1: They step back and peer cautiously inside, their faces search
- 35:43Speaker 1: the room. A patch of sunlight from the open door
- 35:45Speaker 1: falls partially on Ben. He is dead. The men look
- 35:49Speaker 1: down at him, but step past him toward the cellar.
- 35:52Speaker 1: They do not know he was a man. From the cellar,
- 35:56Speaker 1: they hear muffled sobs. McClellan enters and begins to inch
- 36:00Speaker 1: his way down the stairs.
- 36:02Speaker 8: Anybody down there.
- 36:03Speaker 1: He draws his pistol, inches his way down the stairs.
- 36:06Speaker 1: At the bottom he confronts Barbara, sitting wide eyed in
- 36:09Speaker 1: a chair. McClellan raises his pistol, aims it for her head,
- 36:14Speaker 1: but something stops him, a tear in her eye. He
- 36:18Speaker 1: lowers the weapon.
- 36:20Speaker 8: It's all right, men, come on down.
- 36:23Speaker 6: It's just a girl down here.
- 36:24Speaker 1: He goes to Barbara, bends over her, looks at her,
