- 2:23Fake. Ladies and gentlemen, we suggest that you pay particular attention to an
- 2:28important announcement which will be given at the end of tonight's program. The story
- 2:40you're about to hear is true, only the names have been changed to protect
- 2:46the innocent Dragnet. You're a detective sergeant signed to Personnel Division, a resident
- 3:01of your city, files a report of robbery and assault. The suspect or

- 3:24crime for the next thirty minutes transcribed in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department.
- 3:30You will travel step by step on the side of the law through an
- 3:34actual case from official police folence, from beginning to end, from crime to
- 3:38punishment. Dragnet is the story of your police force in action. It was
- 3:46Wednesday, April night was foggy in Los Angeles. We were working a day
- 3:50watch out of personnel. My partner's Ben Romero, the boss's deputy Chief Homan
- 3:53Commander Bia by names Fray. We're on the way over from the City Hall
- 3:59and it was five twenty five. Pee him when we got the Central Division
- 4:01the Assembly room. Why I see him? Joe, Yeah, it looks
- 4:08like him over there. I let you hig you Russell Clark, Yeah,
- 4:13that's right, Friday Ramero personnel. All right, he's doin a Drummond over
- 4:16to I'd like to talk to you, all right, when'd you want to
- 4:18see me? Right now? Okay, we're looking at the captain. You
- 4:24saw about that. Okay, let's go. What do they want to see
- 4:30me? By? You know? Drummond will tell you. Okay, how
- 4:38long you've been on the job. Buh about two and a half months.
- 4:42How do you like it? Oh? I like it fine? Wife doesn't
- 4:44mean much of it. She wanted me to stay at my own job.
- 4:46What was that selling insurance? I like st had me home nights. Doesn't
- 4:51like to be alone, especially now. Yeah, she's expecting a couple of
- 4:55months, you know. Yeah that's cross. Hey, I put in a
- 5:00request for day work. You think that's why personnel wants to see me.
- 5:02I don't know. I don't think so why I should like to get that
- 5:05day watch? Yeah? Not the way you full of started I did.
- 5:11Yeah he started trapping, didn't you, Ben? Yeah? Huh? I
- 5:14had nine months Alan, go ahead, No thanks, I feeling the job
- 5:21at six think just gonn take right long? I don't know. Hi Friday,
- 5:26Hi Friday. And let's waiting list now Coleman Lieten, Yeah, commit,
- 5:35this is offic the Clark Lieutenan Drummond. How did you do? Oh?
- 5:39Clark? Sit down? Thanks? A couple of questions for you,
- 5:45sir. You were on special duty at the Olympic. Go to taurium last
- 5:47night there, right, yesser for the fights. Anything unusual happened out there
- 5:51last night? It wasn't very important with Tim. After the fights, drunk
- 5:57fell down the stairs from my way out of the outitorium. Brookies arm.
- 6:00I took him to Georgia Street and he took care of the arm and I
- 6:03drove him home. He's pretty drunk. Why didn't you book the man?
- 6:08I didn't think it was necessary. How long you've been with the department,
- 6:11Clark, two and a half months there? Did you know he should have
- 6:14been booked for violation of forty one to twenty seven a lamc oh man.
- 6:16It was a pretty bad shape, Lieutenant broke an armor. I guess I
- 6:20didn't think the law was that straight. Well, I was there for a
- 6:24purpose. He decided to forget it. Now you're in a mess right up
- 6:26to your neck. I don't understand. You remember the name of that drunk
- 6:30he took care of last night. Yes, her name of Stacy lays out
- 6:31in West LA. What's the matter to that drunk? Mister Stacey wants to
- 6:35find a complaint against you or four. He claims you took him back to
- 6:40the auditorium, beat him up, broke his arm, and robbed him of
- 6:42one hundred and twenty eight dollars. Crazy, he's lying. I didn't do
- 6:45that, got his word against yours. Clark, in fact, seemed to
- 6:47favor him. But I can prove it whether there was at least a couple
- 6:50of dozen people around it, there was a doctor, he continued, maybe
- 6:55you better take it from the beginning, Clark, exactly how did it happen?
- 6:58I was right after the fight, so I was undoting in the lobby
- 7:00and I saw a bunch of people crowding around the foot of the stairs.
- 7:01Yeah. I went over to see what the trouble was, and they were
- 7:03looking at this man lying on the pavement, Stacy. A doctor was examining
- 7:08his doctor. Did he identify him yet? Yeah? I asked her his
- 7:12identification. He showed it to me, gave me carry he's doctor, all
- 7:15right, yeah, go ahead. Well he told me that he had seen
- 7:17Stacy fall down the stairs coming out of the auditorium, said that Stacy had
- 7:21broken his left arm. What'd you do then, Well, the doc said'd
- 7:26be okay to move him. So I helped him into my car and take
- 7:28him down to Georgia Street. He's so drunkeyard to stand up. The attendant's
- 7:31at Georgia Street took care of his arm. Well, they can tell you
- 7:34all about this maybe, but they can't help you. On his witnesses,
- 7:38you could have beaten up Stacy robbed him, then take him in to the
- 7:40Georgia Street. But I didn't, Lieutenant Attendant, is Stacy's lying? What'd
- 7:44you do when you left Georgia Street? Well, I drove into Central and
- 7:46told him what happened. I told the watch commander I was going to drive
- 7:49this Stacy home, and he warned me about it. Yes, I should
- 7:54have known him better. But well, I swear to you that Stacy's lying.
- 7:57You should have known him better. Where'd you go? Out to your
- 7:59left center? I drove him home. On the way, he said he
- 8:03was hungry, so I stopped. I bought him a sandwich and some black
- 8:05coffee. Kept telling me what I nag his wife was. I said he
- 8:09was afraid to go home. Go on. Well, when I got him
- 8:11to his place, his whiy, I started chewing me out. I just
- 8:13said, good night. That's it, that's it, so help me.
- 8:16That's exactly what happened. How about the doctor at the auditorium, the one
- 8:18who saw Stacy full Did you get his name in the dress? Well?
- 8:24No, no, Lieutenant, I didn't. I think it was necessary.
- 8:26How about the crowd that was standing around just bout anybody you know? No,
- 8:31no, No, I didn't. There just a bunch of people coming
- 8:35out of the fights. And you haven't got anyone to corroborate your story.
- 8:37But all those people saw it. There must have been a couple of dozen
- 8:39of me. What are their names? I don't know. All I know
- 8:43is I didn't beat him up and I didn't take his money. I tell
- 8:45you the Stacey's lying. You could be lying. We got no proof either
- 8:48way. I'm not lying, Lieutenant, I didn't do it. We might
- 8:50believe you, Clark, and that doesn't make any do it is if this
- 8:52man files at two eleven against just got to be settled in the court.
- 8:56But I didn't do it. I tell you, I swear I did it.
- 8:58In just a minute, Mike, send him, mister stay, you
- 9:05can hear the story the way we get it from station and his wife.
- 9:07I'd like to hear it. I don't know why he's doing this. Tell
- 9:09me I helped him all I could. Look Gary Barriers, that's the one.
- 9:16Yeah, that's Wait a minute, mister Stacy. What's this all about?
- 9:20Mister Stacey? Would you repeat the same story I told us this morning?
- 9:24Please? You know what I told you. Chief? You had the
- 9:26stenographer take it all down. It's the same thing, like to have you
- 9:28repeat it in front office, flower cares and title. I know what you're
- 9:31charging with, man like that's entitled nothing. You want to be a lady.
- 9:35Your husband's lying. Don't call my husband a liar. You're not a
- 9:39policeman. You're a hold of them all right. Wait a minute, I
- 9:41don't know what the city's coming to. COT's going around beating up private citizens.
- 9:43Who do we trust if we can't trust the policeman? Just a minute?
- 9:46Please, No, captain. You should have seen my husband when that
- 9:48officer brought him home last night. I'm all banded, face, all cut
- 9:52up. He was so bad he could hardly stand up. He was too
- 9:54drunk to stand up. All right, that's enough. This cop got hold
- 10:00to me as I was coming out of the fights, took me in back
- 10:01of the auditorium, told me if I didn't hand over my wallet, he'd
- 10:05booked me on a drunk charge. Were you drunk, Stacy? I was
- 10:07not. I had a couple of beers, that's all, and I wouldn't
- 10:11give my money, and he beat me up, broke my arm and took
- 10:13my wallet. Had a man like you ever get on the police force.
- 10:16He figured he'd cover up, so he took me and had my arm fixed
- 10:18at the emergency hospital and he drove me home, threatened me all away.
- 10:24He said, you tell anybody about this and I'll get you. That's just
- 10:26what he said. I don't get it, Stacy. You know that story's
- 10:28a pack of lies. Why are you doing this to me? It's the
- 10:31truth and I'm gonna press charges and get my money back one hundred and twenty
- 10:33eight Nos, what have you done with it? We can take care of
- 10:35the question, missus Stacy. Don't see you're doing it. Make him tell
- 10:39what money? I haven't got it. Don't talk back to me, mister
- 10:41Stacy. You and your wife want to file a crime report at this time?
- 10:46You want to press charges? Lame? Yeah, take mister missus Stacy's
- 10:50down. The record Bureau have to make out a report for two eleven and
- 10:52so all right away. Please now listen. We're going to get action if
- 10:58we have to take this to the district attorney. We're not afraid of the
- 11:00publicity. We'll go to the newspaper. If we don't get action. Yes,
- 11:03ma'am, what's it, Clark? They're lying? I can't prove it.
- 11:13They're lying. You can see the position that puts us in. If
- 11:16you're innocent, will do all we can. If you're guilty, we'll see
- 11:18you get everything that's coming to you. But they're lying. You know that
- 11:20not up to us. The court's going to have to decide that's it.
- 11:28Well, there's no other way, Clive. We got forty five hundred men
- 11:31in the department. We don't claim they're Royle saints. Once in a while
- 11:35the bad cop comes along and pulls the caper and all of us get a
- 11:37black eye. This book of rules is the only protection we got against that.
- 11:41By failing to enforce the law, you violated your duty as a police
- 11:43officer. Make yourself in a real mess, Clark, like anybody else would
- 11:48get a fair trial. I mean, I'm dropped from the force. Those
- 11:52people have filed the crime report. You're a suspension pending the outcome in the
- 11:56case after that. If you're cleared and be hearing before the Book to rights
- 12:01right for right now, he'll be booked for robbery and assault in Hilton Town
- 12:05of jail. Case will be presented the district attorney tomorrow. What kin I
- 12:07do? I'll have to have your badge on the desk, good gun id
- 12:22card, Yeah on the desk. Yeah, all right, Joe, that's
- 12:28it. H take them. Six pm. Ben returned to the office and
- 12:41together we took rookie police officer Russell Clark across the street to the Hall of
- 12:45Justice at the County Jail booking desk on the twelfth floor. He was booked
- 12:48on suspicion of two eleven PC and assault with intempt to do a great bodily
- 12:52harm. Was lodged in the cell black. Investigating charges against a police officer
- 12:58involves exactly the same procedures cases where private citizens are concerned. Proved the suspect
- 13:03innocent or guilty, that's the job. If Clark was innocent, looked like
- 13:07there was only one way of proving that was somehow to find the unnamed doctor
- 13:11who was supposed to have seen Stacy fall down the auditorium stairs and then examined
- 13:16him afterwards. If Clark was guilty, we had to find proof that his
- 13:20story about Stacy falling downstairs was a lie. Besides that, we had to
- 13:24find evidence that he beat up Stacy at the rear of the auditorium that night
- 13:26and then he robbed him of one hundred and twenty eight dollars. Thursday,
- 13:31April tenth, Ben and I checked in for work at seven forty five am
- 13:33and found a message from the jailer on the phone board. Clark wanted to
- 13:37see us right away. We met with him in the county jail interview room.
- 13:43How you doing, not too bad? Oh? Let that sour you?
- 13:48Huh, sergeant? You really think I rolled that character too? In
- 13:54the truth we checked you out, good family, got a fine army record.
- 14:00No, we don't think he did it. I just can't understand why
- 14:03he picked me. I tried to help him all I could. Then he
- 14:05walks in the next day with a frame story like that. You got any
- 14:07idea why Stacey would pull something like this on it? I don't know.
- 14:11I'm worried, sergeant, Believe me. I can't afford to sit here missing
- 14:15my pay. We lived pretty close to the budget with a baby coming.
- 14:20I'm worried about the wife. I just don't know what to do. Are
- 14:22you sure you told us everything about this that you remember? Well, that's
- 14:24the one reason I wanted to see. I didn't sleep much last night.
- 14:28I kept trying to remember the name of that doctor. Yeah, well,
- 14:31I remember once he did mention his name, and then when I asked for
- 14:33his identification, he showed me one of his cards. Any idea what his
- 14:37name was? Well, I'm not sure of it. As I remembered,
- 14:39it was some kind of a Swedish or Norwegian name, or something like Johnson
- 14:43Tollison, you know, something with a son on the end of it.
- 14:46It's on that card that doesn't errate down too much. What is it card?
- 14:48Well, I think I put his card in one of the pockets of
- 14:50my other uniform shirt. That's why I caught it. I wonder if you
- 14:54could check that for me. It's at home. Sure, Where do you
- 14:56live out of Norwich Road four eleven. It's right near the coliseum or eleven.
- 15:01Yeah, all right, we'll check it out for just ask the wife.
- 15:05Cards should be in one of the pockets, Yeah, if you put
- 15:07it there. Ben and I left the interview a room at the county jail
- 15:16and drove out to the home of Officer Clark on Norwich Road. We introduced
- 15:20ourselves to his wife and told her what we were after her eyes were red
- 15:24and looked like she'd been crying. She asked about her husband. We told
- 15:26her. He was all right, they're making a terrible mistake. Sergeant Russ
- 15:30never did anything crooked in his life. He didn't do it. I know
- 15:31he didn't. We'll do everything. Began to spreading it out missus law court.
- 15:35He'll have the final say. I knew Russ shouldn't have left his insurance
- 15:39job. I just knew it all this trouble. How about that shirt that
- 15:41your husband told us about the when he wore that night at the auditorium.
- 15:43Oh, yes, he's other uniform shirt. Can we see it please?
- 15:48Yes, certainly it's right this way back in ed. What's so important about
- 15:52the shirt? Sergeant your husband told us that there might be a card in
- 15:54one of the pockets. Might help clear up things. Should be hanging up
- 15:58here in the closet. I always like to keep Russ's shirts on hangers.
- 16:04She keeps a much nice for looking. What's ma This morning? I sent
- 16:14it to the cleaners. Clark's wife, Ben and I drove down to a
- 16:22dry cleaning shop a few blocks away where Missus Clark had left the shirt.
- 16:26The counter girl there told us that the truck had already been by that morning
- 16:29and picked up The day's cleaning was a store rule to check all garments for
- 16:32contents. She had found nothing. We got the address of the main plant,
- 16:36the Great Northern Dry Cleaners, a place down on Factory Street. Ten
- 16:40fifteen am. We checked in at the main plant and explained to the manager
- 16:42what we were after we gave him the tag number of her cleaning, and
- 16:45missus Clark gave him the description of the shirt. We waited in the manager's
- 16:49office while he made a search for the dark blue wool blease shirt. How
- 16:52about this one, lady, it's the only blue wolf shirt picked up at
- 16:56your fingers this morning. Yes, that's Russ's that pockets out there, and
- 17:02I'll check the pockets for you. I had to pull it out of the
- 17:03tank, So wit in this pocket by the other one. Yeah, look
- 17:12for yourself. Nothing. You are listening to drag Net The case history of
- 17:30a police investigation presented in the Public Interest Thursday, April tenth. Shortly after
- 17:41noon, the daily newspapers were on the streets and the head on one of
- 17:42the top front page stories read Rookie cop slugs rob citizen. Ben and I
- 17:48went back to the County jail and told Park that we'd failed to find the
- 17:52card he could give us no other lead that might help in clearing the case.
- 17:56During the next two days that followed, Ben and I ran down every
- 17:59possible no matter how remote it was. I made a thorough check on mister
- 18:03and missus Stacy. We double checked back on Clark's record. For one full
- 18:07day, we did nothing but phone doctors in and around the city of Los
- 18:10Angeles. From a list of hundreds, we came across three doctors who had
- 18:12been present at the Fights and Olympic Auditorium on the night Stacey claimed he was
- 18:17beaten up and robbed by Officer Clark. None of the three had seen a
- 18:21man tumble down the stairway leading from the balcony to the lobby. None of
- 18:23them had seen any accident or had been called on to help anyone professionally.
- 18:27Monday, April fourteenth, we met with Lieutenant Ralph Rummond. Oh go,
- 18:33thanks good us, Ralph. We can't figure it. It's almost to fact.
- 18:34Stacy's nine. Clark, what about him, Well, there's still nothing
- 18:38to show that he didn't do it. He had the opportunity, maybe he
- 18:41had a motive. He needs money, You know whom did How much you
- 18:44get on Stacy? Me and his wife run a second hand furniture store in
- 18:47South Flower. It's a small business. Stacy's quite a gamber. He bets
- 18:49on the fight. Yeah, we checked around with some of the gang down
- 18:52at the auditorium. Stacey's well known down there. He laid some pretty heavy
- 18:56bets the night he claims Clark rolled him. How much you got the dope
- 18:59there? Ben? Does it figure out? He lost over seventy five dollars
- 19:02in small amounts. Add to that the fact that he was doing some partying
- 19:04that might have count for the one hundred and twenty eighties mans. Stacy blew
- 19:08the role, was afraid to tell his wife, so he cooked up the
- 19:11story against Clark. Sure, maybe that could have been the way it happened.
- 19:15What do he got on the other side? Not much? Well,
- 19:17couldn't dig up anything against Clark. I don't know. He doesn't seem like
- 19:19the type to pull something like that. Maybe not. He still can't prove
- 19:23he didn't do it. How about the papers you're plugging for witnesses. Yeah,
- 19:29here's the ad. Had it running in personals for four days now.
- 19:33Well, it's some man full stairway Toorium. Please call Michigan five two,
- 19:38one seventy five. No his Ownso you know all the possible doctors in town
- 19:44have been checked out too. How about the local medical magazines? Got an
- 19:47add in there, Raff, nothing's happened. Well, one thing is sure.
- 19:51If something's gonna happen, his papers are scorching. The kid in the
- 19:53department along with him. Victim without a trial makes good reading in the tabloids.
- 19:59Here's one thing that can and understand the Clark's leveling. There was a
- 20:02doctor the fights that might have looked at Stacy. Then where's the doctor?
- 20:04We've had this thing noised all around down Let's give it a little more time.
- 20:08He might turn up. I kind of like the Stacy angle. What
- 20:11do you mean we suppose we get him in here. I think we could
- 20:15break him down into question. I doubt that we can't even get close to
- 20:18him. That wife or his and not a lawyer there with him all the
- 20:19time. He's afraid to talk to us. Maybe if we passed the word
- 20:23to his wife had been gambling. How far can we go on that,
- 20:26Well, she might believe us, she might not. You've seen what she's
- 20:29like. Yeah, I got an idea. He sold her on a story
- 20:32and she's tagging along to get one hundred and twenty eight dollars back. And
- 20:33it gives me an idea, jo one thing we might have missed. Yeah,
- 20:37what's that? We found out that Stacey did a little partying before he
- 20:40went to the fights at the auditorium, and I didn't we Yeah, go
- 20:42ahead. We checked out a couple of the bars he was drinking at,
- 20:45but we figured he must have parted away at least fifty out of one hundred
- 20:48and twenty eight dollars. He didn't spend that much at the bar. Oh
- 20:52well, sure, he probably hit a few other places too. That's what
- 20:55I mean. There's still a lot of money to drink up alone. You
- 20:57figure a woman, You got any reason to think Stacy plays around? There's
- 21:03one? Yeah, there's what Monday one pm? Then and I started the
- 21:14canvas of bars and small nightclubs in the general area around the Olympic Auditorium.
- 21:18We started with those where Stacy was a regular customer. We failed to turn
- 21:22up any leads. Either of the bartenders refused to tell us that they had
- 21:25no knowledge of Stacy's running around with other women. We kept at him.
- 21:29Another day passed, two days, nothing one of the newspapers started a campaign
- 21:36against the brutality of police officers. On Thursday, we got a tip from
- 21:40a bartender to place out on Washington Street, the Brown Cow. He told
- 21:44us that he thought he saw a man answering Stacy's description in his bar a
- 21:47few nights before, with a flashy blonde in their late twenties. He said
- 21:49he didn't know Stacy too well, but he knew the girl and he knew
- 21:52the hotel where she stayed. Her name was Sandra Gay, an acrobatic specialty
- 21:56dancer of the Cheap nightclub. Checked out her hotel, but she wasn't in
