- 0:12Speaker 1: a little bit, and a hot new phrase that everybody's
- 0:14Speaker 1: discussing thanks to the New York Times. See if you
- 0:17Speaker 1: agree or disagree. But we'll get to that in just
- 0:19Speaker 1: a little bit. We don't. We don't do what Katie why.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It was show's favorite catchy new words. Yeah, catch a
- 0:25Speaker 1: new phrases.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Used to be they would have to like reach you naturally.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Now some wise ass little thirteen year old punk can
- 0:36Speaker 2: come up with a phrase in Bayonne, New Jersey, and
- 0:38Speaker 2: I'm it's inflicted on me by the next afternoon.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I don't want it, not in the market. So we
- 0:46Speaker 1: don't usually do breaking news on the podcast. He's here.
- 0:48Speaker 1: He will be listening to this days or years later.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I don't know when. But this is pretty good.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It really is something, And if you're listening in the future,
- 0:58Speaker 2: this will remind you of Trump's crazy style of communicating.
- 1:02Speaker 2: So it's as we as we speak on the seventeenth,
- 1:06Speaker 2: Is that right? A June twenty twenty five. The whole
- 1:09Speaker 2: israel Aron thing is that it's peak and whether we're
- 1:13Speaker 2: going to rub out the Iyatola's question in the air,
- 1:16Speaker 2: and Trump tweets out, we know exactly where the so
- 1:19Speaker 2: called Supreme Leader is hiding. He is an easy target,
- 1:23Speaker 2: but as safe there, we are not going to take
- 1:25Speaker 2: him out kill in parentheses with an exclamation point for now. Yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 2: we know what you mean by tak him out. We
- 1:33Speaker 2: didn't assume we meant take him out for dinner. We
- 1:36Speaker 2: knew you meant you're gonna.
- 1:36Speaker 1: F and kill him.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Kill. Well, look, kill, We're not going to take him out,
- 1:42Speaker 2: kill chains. We're not going to take him out kill
- 1:47Speaker 2: at least not for now. But we don't want missiles
- 1:49Speaker 2: shot at civilians or American soldiers. Our patients is wearing thin.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Thank you for your attention to this matter. No, that's
- 1:56Speaker 2: actually the end of it for you for your attention
- 2:01Speaker 2: Appy email.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah, a little of his old CEO days slipped in
- 2:04Speaker 1: there at the end.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Wow.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Hey, we noticed your dues for the Bedminster Golf Club
- 2:11Speaker 2: have been overdue now for a week. Thank you for
- 2:13Speaker 2: your attention to this matter.
- 2:15Speaker 1: People are using too many paper cups at the water dispenser,
- 2:18Speaker 1: please try to cut back. Thank you for your attention
- 2:21Speaker 1: to this matter.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Exactly that's like after Israel blows up a building Iran
- 2:26Speaker 4: and says, we apologize for the inconvenience, all right.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Or yeah, destroyed Turan. Good luck in your future endeavors.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Mm hmm.

- 2:43Speaker 2: at Israel bombas dot com.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Thank you for your attention to this matter. Was he
- 2:52Speaker 1: trying to be funny? I don't know.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I mean, obviously he's got to understand how horrifically funny
- 3:01Speaker 2: that is.
- 3:04Speaker 1: You think, all right, well, we'll see where that goes.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna skip the other thing we're gonna do right
- 3:08Speaker 1: to the hot phrase for summertime. I don't know if
- 3:11Speaker 1: you read this article in the New York Times. It
- 3:13Speaker 1: caused many tongues to wag and columns to be written
- 3:16Speaker 1: all around the world. Really, as New York Times unleashed
- 3:22Speaker 1: upon us the term kid rotting for the summertime and
- 3:29Speaker 1: rotting as is, your kids are rotting, And it's ended
- 3:34Speaker 1: up going back and forth with a lot of people.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I don't know where I am on this, but uh,
- 3:41Speaker 1: the idea of not having a whole bunch of planned
- 3:46Speaker 1: camps and activities for your kids, and they just hang
- 3:50Speaker 1: out on the couch doing nothing all summer, to which
- 3:53Speaker 1: a lot of people the kid rotting, to which a
- 3:55Speaker 1: lot of people have replied, that sounds like what my
- 3:57Speaker 1: summers were like, And I freaking loved them. Yeah, just
- 4:01Speaker 1: hanging out doing nothing with no plans whatsoever. I remember
- 4:04Speaker 1: those days. You get up, you had no idea what
- 4:07Speaker 1: you're gonna do today, and and it was just a
- 4:09Speaker 1: variety of things and are kind of nothing or whatever.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And it was awesome. The sense of freedom was awesome.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Was the modern version of that staring at a screen. Well,
- 4:19Speaker 2: that's where it gets interesting. None of that stuff you
- 4:22Speaker 2: said will happen. It'll just be staring at screens, he says.
- 4:25Speaker 1: But and I'm I'm I you know, I lean real
- 4:30Speaker 1: far toward that is it's not only it's not just
- 4:33Speaker 1: a waste of time. It affects your brain and your
- 4:35Speaker 1: attention span. But that aside, if the if, the if.
- 4:41Speaker 1: The alternative is all kinds of camps and planned activities
- 4:45Speaker 1: versus just hang out and do whatever all day long.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And I don't know why I've got this weird resistance
- 4:51Speaker 1: since I got to do that a lot as a kid,
- 4:53Speaker 1: my my oldest, my high school son. He is not
- 4:57Speaker 1: into video games and stuff like that near as much.
- 5:01Speaker 1: He does a lot of bike riding with his friends
- 5:02Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff. But man, I picked
- 5:04Speaker 1: him and his friends up yesterday. He texted me and said,
- 5:07Speaker 1: we are just too worn out. We're over at my
- 5:09Speaker 1: friend Zach's house. Could you come pick us up and
- 5:12Speaker 1: bring us over to our house. We're just we've been
- 5:14Speaker 1: riding and it's hot, Okay. I said, give me twenty minutes.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I got a couple of things that could do. But
- 5:19Speaker 1: I went and picked them up. And I hadn't been
- 5:21Speaker 1: around this vibe in forty years, but fifty years. But
- 5:27Speaker 1: just the level of happy, relaxed the world is our
- 5:33Speaker 1: oyster these three fifteen year olds had with their bikes.
- 5:37Speaker 1: He loaded them up in my truck and they got in.
- 5:39Speaker 1: They were just joking and laughing and they were just
- 5:41Speaker 1: doing nothing all day long and they're gonna do nothing
- 5:44Speaker 1: the rest of the day but just hang out and
- 5:46Speaker 1: be teenagers. And it just looked fantastic.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Well I love that, Katie.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that too. But I'm wondering if parents are.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Signing their kids up for so much stuff because they
- 5:58Speaker 3: don't want them on their screens all summer. You know
- 6:01Speaker 3: what I mean, because I, as a kid, I got
- 6:04Speaker 3: signed up for stuff, but my parents didn't have to
- 6:05Speaker 3: worry about that.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Well right, Sometimes signing kids up for stuff is
- 6:11Speaker 1: your daycare for the summer since the school is out,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and you need to put yeah yeah, and that's fine.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Although the you know what's happening around those schedule activities
- 6:23Speaker 2: have changed. Back in the day, it was what Jack
- 6:25Speaker 2: was describing. There's nothing scheduled. You're just free to do
- 6:30Speaker 2: what you want, or you can invent or hook up
- 6:33Speaker 2: with your friends, be bored together. Invente gave blah blah blah.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Now the you know, the surrounding of the scheduled event
- 6:39Speaker 2: is many more scheduled events. And as a fierce advocate
- 6:43Speaker 2: of free range parenting, I totally agree with you in principle, Jack,
- 6:49Speaker 2: is just the screen thing.
- 6:51Speaker 1: What would you wing out? What would you do? What
- 6:52Speaker 1: would you recommend?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Because I carefully scheduled free time, you will absolutely show
- 7:02Speaker 2: up on time ten a m. For the do whatever
- 7:06Speaker 2: you want.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Man. I go back and forth with this, my thirteen
- 7:09Speaker 1: year old all the time. I've gotten to the point
- 7:11Speaker 1: where I say, I can't say it again. I can't
- 7:13Speaker 1: say it for the eight millionth time because I tried
- 7:17Speaker 1: it to limit his screen time. I don't like I'm
- 7:20Speaker 1: not as disciplined on it as a lot of my
- 7:22Speaker 1: friends are, where they've got like a timer on their
- 7:24Speaker 1: Internet or you know, their stopwatch going on it or whatever,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and they limit to that however many hours. But I
- 7:30Speaker 1: just like, when I feel like it's been enough, to say, Okay,
- 7:32Speaker 1: that's that's enough screens, So find something to do with that.
- 7:35Speaker 1: But what will I do? And I always say I can't.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Now I say I can't say it again. I just can't.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I can't. I can't list the things again. Walk the dog,
- 7:45Speaker 1: ride a bike, write something, play a musical instrument, draw, run, exercise,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I swim, we got a pool. Just I can't list
- 7:56Speaker 1: the million things you could do that aren't looking at
- 7:59Speaker 1: his But do one of them, you know.
- 8:02Speaker 3: One of those four hundred and eighty five.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Videos you just watched. Do one of those things, those
- 8:07Speaker 1: like the things. You're the guy in the video, not
- 8:10Speaker 1: the guy watching the video.
- 8:11Speaker 2: You know, asking that question that way is as natural
- 8:15Speaker 2: as like your fingernails growing.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Well, what am I supposed to do. It's true.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I remember asking my mom that, Yeah, George Washington's kids,
- 8:23Speaker 2: we're asking him, what.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Am I supposed to do? Kids? Get out of the cave,
- 8:28Speaker 1: your mom and I need to make your brother.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Right right, Go play with the other you know, pre syllabic,
- 8:38Speaker 2: non language speaking, grunting cave kids.
- 8:42Speaker 1: But there's dinosaurs out there. I don't care. Get out
- 8:44Speaker 1: of the cave.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Jack, when the kids were in the backseat the car,
- 8:48Speaker 4: did you tell them that life goes downhill?
- 8:50Speaker 1: And it's just all that I have had that conversation. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you're happy. Now enjoy it while you can, because life
- 9:02Speaker 1: is nothing but a big disappointment.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Grind it out as you work for some bastards you
- 9:09Speaker 2: don't like, You don't respect that. He hasn't care.
- 9:11Speaker 1: About I have said that day I bed year old.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Like me, I have said to my son which I
- 9:18Speaker 1: probablyhouldn't say, because he wants, he wants to get Next
- 9:20Speaker 1: year he'll be able to get a job at a
- 9:22Speaker 1: variety of places that he wants to go, because you
- 9:23Speaker 1: have to be sixteen. But anyway, I say, and then
- 9:26Speaker 1: you'll start working, and then you will work until you're
- 9:30Speaker 1: sold and nearly dead, that none of this will matter anymore.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I mean, you'll never stop ever again. And it's true,
- 9:38Speaker 1: but I don't know if you need to lay that
- 9:39Speaker 1: out when you're sixteen years old.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Oh that's so funny. We just got an email from
- 9:43Speaker 2: some pr group pitching a guest who wants to talk
- 9:46Speaker 2: about the kid rotting.
- 9:47Speaker 1: It's the hot phrase, man's thing. Kid rotting is a
- 9:50Speaker 1: hot phrase. So New York was really on the time
- 9:52Speaker 1: on the side of uh, you know, we used to
- 9:56Speaker 1: call we didn't used to call it rotting. We used
- 9:58Speaker 1: to just call it summertime. And then there's been the pushback,
- 10:01Speaker 1: obviously with the screen stuff, and so yeah, it's become
- 10:05Speaker 1: a whole thing. But I do even if you eliminate
- 10:08Speaker 1: the screens, I know a lot of parents who would
- 10:11Speaker 1: think it would be horrible if their kids just hung
- 10:13Speaker 1: out with no plans every day and did nothing. Using
- 10:17Speaker 1: my finger quotes, it's impossible, as my son always points out,
- 10:20Speaker 1: to do nothing. Even if you're doing nothing, you're doing something,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and you lay around and do nothing for a while,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but you'll come up with something because you just out
- 10:28Speaker 1: of necessity.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So it's interesting this guest pitch is actually a woman
- 10:35Speaker 2: with Campfire. I think it used to be Campfire Girls
- 10:38Speaker 2: or whatever, but it's Campfire. It's a youth development organization.
- 10:42Speaker 2: And she believes the conversation misses the real distinction. Not
- 10:47Speaker 2: all boredom is created equal. There's a huge difference between
- 10:51Speaker 2: head down boredom, head down boredom zoning out on screens,
- 10:55Speaker 2: disconnected from others, and head up boredom that sparks activity,
- 11:00Speaker 2: problem solving, and self discovery.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That's an interesting turn.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And then she pitches that camp boredom isn't a problem.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It's a portal drift. What becomes a fort, seashells become currency,
- 11:11Speaker 2: and a toilet paper roll becomes binoculars.
- 11:14Speaker 1: No, it's not gonna help you see anything up close.
- 11:16Speaker 2: It's just ineffective binoculars.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Certainly, yes, the distance will seem exactly the same. I
- 11:24Speaker 1: don't think these are working.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Jack could have just said, you know, kids, sometimes I
- 11:33Speaker 4: feel like just taking this car and driving it off
- 11:35Speaker 4: a cliff.
- 11:36Speaker 2: No, no, no
- 11:41Speaker 1: Well, I guess that's it.
