Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 216. Charles Xavier... A Villain?!
Transcript
- 0:11Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
- 0:13My name is Megan with vigilante vibes and today I am coming to
- 0:17you with a big episode that I was planning on making for a
- 0:22long time and I just finally did it.
- 0:25This is something I have been preaching about forever now.
- 0:30So what are we talking about today?
- 0:33Charles Xavier. Charles Xavier is a villain, and
- 0:36I am sick of pretending he isn't.
- 0:38I'm sick of everyone pretending he is not.
- 0:41So we're going to talk about it before I get started.
- 0:43Be sure to like and subscribe so you don't miss anything I put
- 0:45out because I put out a whole bunch of stuff.
- 0:48There are a few things about the X-Men that just feel
- 0:51untouchable, and Professor Charles Xavier definitely feels
- 0:54like one of them. Pretty much every big X-Men
- 0:57story kicks off because of Xavier's dream of humans and
- 1:00mutants living together in peace, which is nice.
- 1:03On paper, wanting a fair, safe world for mutants is admirable,
- 1:08and for a long time he was basically the ultimate mentor in
- 1:11the Marvel Universe. But I think with how hard we
- 1:15rely on Xavier's dream, we constantly come up with reasons
- 1:19to excuse his trashy behavior. He's way more controversial than
- 1:24most people realize. Xavier is so committed to making
- 1:28his dream survive that he's done some pretty pretty questionable
- 1:32and horrible things behind the scenes to protect it.
- 1:35After being very experienced in the world of the X-Men, I'm here
- 1:40to say that Professor Xavier is a villain, and I'm going to
- 1:44explain why. On one hand, yeah, Xavier
- 1:48deserves credit for a lot of the X Men's wins, but on the other
- 1:51hand, he also made lifeway harder for mutants than it ever
- 1:56needed to be. The clearest example is the
- 1:58Krakoa era. Krakoa was supposed to be this
- 2:00huge power move for mutant kind, their own nation, their own
- 2:05future. And Xavier built the whole thing
- 2:08on secrets and half truths. He loves acting like he's the
- 2:12guy making the tough calls so nobody else has to do it.
- 2:15That is his thing, he loves it. But in reality he keeps planting
- 2:19landmines under the world he's building and when they explode
- 2:22it's the X-Men who take the hit. By the end of Krakowa, after the
- 2:27Anti Mutant Orcas initiative wiped the island out with a
- 2:31piece of Mr. Schnister stuck in his head, Xavier actually teamed
- 2:36up with the Sentinels in a scheme to trick them into
- 2:38destroying humanity just to buy the X-Men time.
- 2:41And that's not a minor lapse in judgement, that's a next level
- 2:45villainy. And the worst part?
- 2:47A lot of it traces back to Xavier playing dangerous games
- 2:50with mutant kind's enemies in the 1st place.
- 2:53He gave them the ammo they needed to hurt mutants on a
- 2:56scale other villains never managed.
- 2:59He's caused an unbelievable amount of suffering for his own
- 3:01people and he still walks around thinking he was justified.
- 3:06Sure, villains like Magneto and Apocalypse have damaged mutant
- 3:10PR over the years, but they're not the public face of the
- 3:14mutant cause. Xavier is he's inseparable from
- 3:18it so when he does something shady the whole mutant race gets
- 3:22blamed. At this point I honestly don't
- 3:24even want to see him show up anymore because whenever he does
- 3:28you just know some elaborate scheme is coming that will blow
- 3:32up in everyone's faces. The X manhunt event even makes
- 3:36it clear that a chunk of the team sees him as a straight up
- 3:39villain. Now I know how can a man that
- 3:42seeks out children to groom them into his child army possibly be
- 3:45a bad guy? Well I'm here to tell you that's
- 3:48possible, but don't worry if I don't have you convinced yet.
- 3:51I brought examples. How about we start with the
- 3:54Xavier Protocols. The Xavier Protocols were
- 3:57created by Charles Xavier as a sort of fail safe device should
- 4:01he himself or one of the X-Men or one of their associates
- 4:04become a danger to humanity or life itself.
- 4:07There are over 200 entries, apparently one file for each of
- 4:11the X-Men as well as the members of their many spin off groups
- 4:15like New Mutants, X Factor, X Force.
- 4:19The Information and Xavier Protocols is very much right, to
- 4:22the point. Listed are not only the person's
- 4:25weaknesses, but also the quickest and most efficient way
- 4:29to take them out. You're supposed to be a father
- 4:32figure or a caretaker to these kids, and you have a CHEAT SHEET
- 4:34on how to eliminate them. Another one, Professor X, has
- 4:40never had a problem stepping away from the X-Men when
- 4:42something grabs his attention. Case in point, only a few years
- 4:46into the team's run, he straight up faked his own death and left
- 4:50his students to deal with everything alone.
- 4:52And Uncanny X-Men number 42, He went underground to secretly
- 4:57prepare for the incoming Xenox alien invasion.
- 5:00While he was off playing chess Master and hiding, a dying
- 5:04mutant shapeshifter named Changeling pretended to be
- 5:07Xavier and ended up getting killed by the villain.
- 5:10Grotesque. Jean Grey knew the truth the
- 5:13whole time, but Xavier made her keep it secret so the rest of
- 5:16the team thought their mentor was dead.
- 5:19They mourned him, and they even briefly broke up.
- 5:22Then, of course, Xavier eventually popped back up and it
- 5:26explained everything to his understandably stunned students.
- 5:30Not long after, an Uncanny X-Men number 65, he helped stop the
- 5:35Xenox by telepathically linking every mind on Earth together.
- 5:38Big heroic moment, sure, but it all started with him faking his
- 5:43death and emotionally wrecking his own team for the greater
- 5:46good, which is a classic Xavier move.
- 5:49How about Deadly Genesis? When the original X-Men were
- 5:54captured by the living island of Krakoa, Professor X famously put
- 5:58together a brand new squad, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm,
- 6:02Colossus to go rescue them. That's the version of the story
- 6:06everyone knows what we don't find out until X-Men Deadly
- 6:10genesis #4. Before assembling that iconic
- 6:13team, Xavier secretly recruited a totally different group of
- 6:17young, inexperienced mutants with Myra Mctaggart.
- 6:21It always goes back to Myra Mctaggart and I am sick of this
- 6:24woman. She is a number one problem.
- 6:27It's not talked about enough, but we're not here to talk about
- 6:29her. And basically he sent them on a
- 6:32suicide mission. They did manage to rescue
- 6:34Cyclops, but the rest of the team, including Cyclops, long
- 6:37lost brother Vulcan, were believed to have died on their
- 6:40very first outing. When Cyclops made it back to the
- 6:43mansion, completely traumatized, Xavier helped by wiping his
- 6:48memories of Vulcan and the entire team.
- 6:51Years later, it turned out Vulcan had survived and came
- 6:54back insanely powerful and furious, ready to get revenge.
- 6:57Rightfully so. Once everything came out,
- 7:01Cyclops was done. He kicked Xavier out of the
- 7:04X-Men, and honestly, how can you blame him?
- 7:08You can't. Or, or or what about Wolverine?
- 7:13Wolverine's memories have always been a mess, but Professor X did
- 7:18not help. In fact, he made it worse almost
- 7:21right from the jump. When Logan first joined the
- 7:25X-Men, he had already been brainwashed by Romulus, one of
- 7:28the big shadowy figures behind the Weapon X program.
- 7:31In X-Men Original Sin Number One, it's revealed that during
- 7:35his early days with the team, Logan actually tried to kill
- 7:37Xavier. Because of that programming,
- 7:40Xavier stopped him telepathically, then basically
- 7:42said, I still need a guy with your skill set.
- 7:46He went into Logan's mind, removed the mental conditioning,
- 7:50but because Wolverine's brain had already been tampered with
- 7:53so many times, that psychic surgery just caused even more
- 7:57holes in his memory. When Logan eventually found out
- 8:01what Xavier had done, he didn't go berserk.
- 8:04He actually forgave him, figuring he liked the hero he'd
- 8:07become well enough. He even trusted Xavier enough to
- 8:10ask him to do similar things for his own troubled son, Dakin.
- 8:15Still another example of Xavier deciding he knows best when it
- 8:19comes to rewriting someone's mind.
- 8:21Yeah, most. There's a lot of instances where
- 8:24Xavier does something horrendous, horrible, just
- 8:27something usually against someone's consent and it's OK
- 8:32because that person ends up joining an ex team.
- 8:35The person forgives him. That person says you probably
- 8:37know best but in reality that's invasive and that's rude.
- 8:43How about krakowa? Xavier made plenty of sketchy
- 8:48calls while running Krakowa, like teaming up with Mr.
- 8:51Sinister of all people, but his worst moves came after Orcas
- 8:55attacked. Tipped off by a traitorous Mira,
- 8:58Orcas crashed a Hellfire Gala with Nimrod and a fleet of
- 9:02upgraded Stark Sentinels, and it was a full on massacre.
- 9:06Instead of letting the X-Men fight back, Xavier
- 9:08telepathically froze them in place and surrendered.
- 9:11Then he forced most of the world's mutants to walk through
- 9:15mysterious portals to who knows where.
- 9:17An X-Men Hellfire gala #1 While the remaining X-Men were
- 9:22scrambling to survive in the present, Xavier went to an even
- 9:26darker place. He traveled back in time,
- 9:29planning to take out a very young Myra before her mutant
- 9:33powers ever activated. He didn't go through with it,
- 9:37but the fact that he was ready to erase a child from existence
- 9:40to fix his mistakes says a lot about where his head was at.
- 9:43How about the Danger room? We all know the danger room
- 9:46where the X-Men would train, but what about when the danger room
- 9:50became self aware and showed up as a full on being called
- 9:53Danger, an Astonishing X-Men. Xavier knew she was alive and
- 9:58just completely ignored her, enslaving her for years.
- 10:01Little to no surprise, Danger had enough attacks.
- 10:04She attacked the X mansion, created a humanoid body and went
- 10:08after Xavier for keeping her imprisoned.
- 10:11Are you still not convinced? Because don't worry, I have
- 10:13more. Another example, let's talk
- 10:16about Xavier and his son David. Even though Professor X has
- 10:19spent his life mentoring young mutants and teaching them how to
- 10:22control their powers, he'll openly admit that he dropped the
- 10:26ball as a dad to David Holler, whose Legion?
- 10:29The Omega level reality warper with a seriously fractured mind.
- 10:35David was born after a short relationship relationship
- 10:39between Xavier and Gabrielle Howler, which is a gross story
- 10:44in itself, slept with his patient Gabrielle after using
- 10:48his powers to pull her out of a catatonic state caused by SA, if
- 10:54you understand what I'm saying. As a child in a concentration
- 10:59camp admitting to himself it was morally wrong, then later on
- 11:03admitting he used a telepathy to make her have feelings for him.
- 11:08And the wild part is Xavier didn't even know he had a son
- 11:11for more than a decade. By the time he found out, David
- 11:15had already gone through a traumatic event that triggered
- 11:17his mutant abilities and shattered his psyche into
- 11:20multiple personalities. When Legion first showed up and
- 11:23New mutants #26 Xavier tried to help him treat him.
- 11:29And the issue ends with Xavier promising he'll always be there
- 11:33for his son. Which sounds great, right?
- 11:37But is that how it turned out? Absolutely not.
- 11:41And that's not even mentioning his very, very inappropriate
- 11:45feelings for a young Jean Grey. Which I'm very happy the writers
- 11:48ditched that whole situation, but it should never been brought
- 11:50up to begin with. But for clarity's sake, she was
- 11:54not the only student he was inappropriate with in Micronauts
- 11:58in the X-Men #4 when the entity was now in control of Professor
- 12:02XS body back in the macroverse, he essentially physically
- 12:07assaults essays Danny moon star. He chides his own good side for
- 12:13denying him the pleasure of the pretty young playthings Xavier
- 12:17surrounds himself with, and then mentally gives the teenage girl
- 12:22a sensual caress across her very soul that leads her to collapse
- 12:29in the throes of indescribable pleasure.
- 12:32The scene evokes the kind of conditioning, grooming and
- 12:35recruitment that child predators do to children.
- 12:39He says if you are a good little girl and aid me in dominating
- 12:43the New Mutants, I will reward you with more of the same.
- 12:46In other words, using her to gain new victims of his lusts.
- 12:51And to put it plainly, the entity did have control of his
- 12:54body, but the entity is actually Charles Dark Side running amok.
- 13:00So there's not many times I've read something in Marvel Comics
- 13:05that just hurt my stomach. Like I, oh, it just didn't sit
- 13:12well with me at all. But this was the one time that I
- 13:15read something that I wish I didn't, so there's that.
- 13:20There's also the whole Onslaught situation, joining the
- 13:23Illuminati, creating a child army, and his overall treatment
- 13:27of some pretty great members of the X-Men.
- 13:29If you go back to reading the earlier comics, you can see that
- 13:32Xavier was an absolute menace and not pleasant to be around
- 13:37whatsoever. Giving Rogue the idea that he
- 13:39can cure her, telling her she doesn't deserve it, knowing
- 13:43Rogue not being able to touch people was a mental block and
- 13:48not helping her with it because he wanted her to just figure it
- 13:51out on her own. He tried to UN alive his own
- 13:54unborn sister so he was a menace from the beginning.
- 13:57How about Matthew Malloy? Xavier tried to erase his
- 14:01existence by going back in time and preventing Matthew's parents
- 14:04from meeting. Like it's one thing to take
- 14:07someone out but it's something entirely worse to erase their
- 14:11own existence. Not to mention, Matthew was not
- 14:14evil, he was just very powerful. Instead of trying to teach
- 14:18Matthew to control his powers, he went for the easy way out and
- 14:21just thought he'd erase the problem.
- 14:23Forcing Sage into a life of being a spy when she was very
- 14:27very very young. Putting her in the hands of the
- 14:30Hellfire Club. That's terrifying.
- 14:33Made Magneto relive his time in the Holocaust using PTSD.
- 14:38Or if you know, as it's commonly referred to as the Holocaust
- 14:42Beam. But to be fair, that was in the
- 14:44animated series. But still, it's still something
- 14:47that needs to be brought up. So all of these are examples of
- 14:51what a horrible person he is. Of course he's done great
- 14:55things, but of course the number of great things he does probably
- 15:00outweighs the horrible things he's done.
- 15:03But for Sing to be a magnitude, it absolutely does not what
- 15:09makes someone a villain in the comics.
- 15:11It's not just having a bad goal, it's doing terrible things to
- 15:14push your agenda. Xavier's dream might be noble,
- 15:19but his methods are ruthless. He goes to extremes over and
- 15:23over, and it's the X-Men who pay for it.
- 15:26He nearly destroys the team time and time again, then assumes
- 15:30they'll fix the fallout like they always do.
- 15:33That's not how heroes operate. That's how someone like Lex
- 15:39Luthor operates. Let's to be honest, Xavier's
- 15:42gone from mentor to the team to the team's most dangerous enemy.
- 15:46And the worst part is they can ever really escape him.
- 15:53So that's all my reasonings as to why Charles Xavier is a
- 15:56villain. If that's not enough for you, it
- 16:01really should be. But yeah, I'm sick of people
- 16:03saying that he is the hero. He is everything good.
- 16:07He is absolutely not. And if you are someone who only
- 16:11knows the movie version, the live action versions of him,
- 16:16then I get it because he is seen as a very kind and understanding
- 16:21person because that's what the that's what the movie called for
- 16:26for the MCU. I really do think they should
- 16:30lean into the shadier side of him, like like the comics do,
- 16:35just not just not a lot of things he does involving his
- 16:41students. We can keep that out.
- 16:44So yeah, I hope you enjoyed this.
- 16:46I hope I didn't offend anyone, and I hope you will like and
- 16:52subscribe. With that being said, please
- 16:54have a marvelous day.
