Transcript
- 1:04Speaker 1: But how many believers are stunted because there is this fear hanging over them that they've just lost their salvation or they're going to.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I imagine a lot, and I think, in addition to that, their salvation, or I should say their relationship with God, is stuck and away from what he intends for it to be, which Psalm 51, restore to me the joy of my salvation and the invitation there is to live joyfully in confidence, not over what you do, but over what God has done for you.
- 1:39Speaker 2: And I think the more and here's the reality is that ultimately, in eternal insecurity, what we're doing is we're focusing on ourselves.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's all about what I am or am not doing.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Eternal security is all about focusing on God and what he has done for me.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And so, ultimately, you kind of Mark, I think last episode you were quoting CS Lewis, in which I just completely lost the quote in my mind.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I just pulled an easy.
- 2:09Speaker 2: What was the quote?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Oh, humility or pride is not thinking of yourself, less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
- 2:21Speaker 2: That was how CS Lewis quoted it, and I think our eternal security is something similar.
- 2:26Speaker 2: We need to stop thinking about ourselves and start thinking more about what God has done and the reality that he's holding onto us.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Well, ray, that's right.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I mean, when we sin, the remedy is to turn to the cross right.
- 2:41Speaker 4: If we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I read something there the other day when I was looking at that verse to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 2:50Speaker 4: I read something there the other day when I was looking at that verse I thought I've never really seen that and had a revelation of what it's actually saying.
- 2:54Speaker 4: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just.
- 2:59Speaker 4: That brings in the cross.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yes, because God isn't just faithful to forgive our sins, he's just to forgive our sins and the cross makes provision for our forgiveness and keeps the law satisfied and we're justified through it.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Blessed be the God and Father, lord Jesus Christ, who, according to his abundant mercy, has begotten us again to a lively hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation, ready to be revealed until the last time.
- 3:33Speaker 4: What we're saying at the moment about having faith in God and his promises may not mean that much, but when you're on your deathbed, you want to know that you're saved.
- 3:42Speaker 4: You want to know that the parachute you're jumping with isn't faulty, that you can take it on and put it back on.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Take it off, put it on.
- 3:48Speaker 3: No God gives it to you and he'll keep you If we treat eternal security not as a hammock where I can just, oh, I can do whatever I want to do, bro.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I mean right, I mean I can sit, and this is kind of the Catholic viewpoint that I had a relative who was Catholic and said, oh, you believe in eternal security.
- 4:14Speaker 3: It's like, oh, so you can just do whatever you want to do.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Now I go.
- 4:16Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 4:16Speaker 3: Where did you get this idea?
- 4:17Speaker 3: I'm not treating eternal security as a hammock, though I can rest because Christ has done the work.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I treat it as a safety net because I can't fall, I will never stumble, I'm not going to be going down to hell.
- 4:25Speaker 3: He's not going to punish me when I mess up because he punished his son.
- 4:30Speaker 3: There's only room for one punishment for the believer right or for the non-believer.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You get punished in hell because you've rejected God, or Christ is punishing you.
- 4:41Speaker 3: So now God can correct you, he can chastise you, and you want him to do that right.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But no, it is a safety net, not a hammock.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Just come alive with the idea that it's not about you, it's about Christ in you, the hope of glory, amen.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I love the way you've always put it If saved, always saved, explain that.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know where I got it from.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I don't think it was original AI.
- 5:06Speaker 4: No, no it was pre-AI, it was many years ago, but you can find a thousand Bible verses to justify someone who believes or for someone who believes to justify you.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Can fall away and you've got to persevere or at least you fall away.
- 5:19Speaker 4: They find all these verses, not realizing there's such a thing as true and false conversion.
- 5:29Speaker 4: If someone is genuinely saved, they put their hand to the plow and don't look back, because they're fit for the kingdom and God has made them fit.
- 5:32Speaker 4: They're the good soil hero that brings forth fruit hundredfold.
- 5:34Speaker 4: He doesn't fall away like the stony ground hero when temptation, persecution and tribulation comes.
- 5:40Speaker 4: And then you look at verses like he is able to keep you from falling and present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Oh man Jude 24 and 25.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I want to give a reference to this because, listen, we have a lot of people listening right now who have been haunted by the fear that they've lost their salvation or are going to lose it.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Matthew 7 makes it very, very clear that there are people who will have thought they knew God.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Lord.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Lord, have we not prophesied, cast out demons, done many wonders in your name?
- 6:11Speaker 1: And I will say to them I never knew you.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I never knew you.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And isn't that interesting when you think about what Paul said in Galatians?
- 6:22Speaker 1: He said but then, indeed and this is in Galatians 4, 1, and on, he said but then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which, by nature, are not gods.
- 6:32Speaker 1: But now, after you've come to know God, or rather are known by God I love how he put that You're known by God.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Mark, I want to comment on that scripture that you just said.
- 6:44Speaker 3: And then you'll tell them plainly I never knew you.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Depart me from your work of iniquity.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I never knew you.
- 6:50Speaker 3: He didn't say at one time I knew you.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Right, exactly Right.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I mean, if he said I never knew you, it means he never knew him.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 3: How do I break that down?
- 7:01Speaker 3: Any more than that, right?
- 7:02Speaker 3: So it's like depart from me, you worker of iniquity.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I once knew you, but I don't know you anymore.
- 7:09Speaker 3: This is a great verse for the doctrine of eternal security, right RC Sproul.
- 7:15Speaker 3: He said the perseverance of the saints is really the perseverance of God.
- 7:20Speaker 3: With the saints, christ does not save halfway, he saves to the last breath.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Wow, so often I hear preachers get lazy in their preaching and ultimately you can reduce their sermons down to spiritual moralism in which it's like hey guys, today's sermon's on prayer, here's how you need to pray.
- 7:43Speaker 2: You're not praying enough, you need to pray more.
- 7:45Speaker 2: If you're really a Christian, you'd be praying this way.
- 7:47Speaker 2: All right, go pray and you leave and you're like man.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Okay, I guess I'm a bad Christian.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Or you leave going.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Well, I guess I am a Christian because I'm doing these things when the reality is that we need to preach the gospel so that people have confidence in their eternal security.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Again, not pointing at what we do, but pointing at what Christ has done for us.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Amen.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Spurgeon, the old Baptist preacher.
- 8:11Speaker 3: He said, if you could lose your salvation, you would.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I mean, how strong do you think you are?
- 8:19Speaker 3: and how prideful are you to think that you can maintain it.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I mean it's absolutely ridiculous.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And then JI Packer.
- 8:25Speaker 3: He said your faith will not fail while God sustains it.
- 8:29Speaker 3: You are not strong enough to fall away while God has resolved to hold you.
- 8:34Speaker 2: We could have just ended it with.
- 8:35Speaker 2: If you could lose your salvation, you would.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Thank you, spurgeon.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yeah, spurgeon.
- 8:42Speaker 1: 1 Thessalonians 5, 23 and 24.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit, soul and body be preserved, blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 9:02Speaker 1: He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: There, my brothers and sisters, is your eternal security.
- 9:10Speaker 1: He look unto him.
- 9:12Speaker 1: He is faithful, he will do it.
- 9:14Speaker 1: He's going to sanctify you completely.
- 9:15Speaker 1: He's going to preserve you if you're his.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So yeah, examine yourself to see if you're in the faith, make your call and election.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Sure, if you live a life of habitual sin and you don't care about it, you may not be saved.
- 9:30Speaker 1: But if you can look and you say I hate my sin, I wish I could never sin, I never want to sin, but yet you find yourself in the process of sanctification, stumbling.
- 9:41Speaker 1: You are his and you are his forever.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So rest in that and let that fuel you to draw closer to him and walk more passionately in your walk with him.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I heard someone once say if you're worried about your salvation, it's a good sign you don't have to be.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that Good way to put it.
