Transcript
- 0:02Welcome back to another episode of Domer and Sons.
- 0:06It's a family podcast on Notre Dame football.
- 0:10I'm Calvin Rose, the son of prestigious swimmer Matthew Rose- Ah and the older brother of William Rose.
- 0:19It is Thursday, October 22nd, and this is episode eight of this 2026-27 Notre Dame football season.
- 0:28It's our BYU review and nothing else.
- 0:31It's gonna be pretty short, but we have a lot to say- Yeah to say the least.
- 0:36Um- Thanks for the intro.
- 0:37Of course.
- 0:38Of course.
- 0:39How are you doing?
- 0:40I'm doing good.
- 0:41How about y'all?
- 0:42I'm doing better than I was on Saturday night.
- 0:44How about you, William?
- 0:45How are you doing?
- 0:46I'm still recovering, but I'm getting better.
- 0:48Yeah.
- 0:48Better and better each day.
- 0:49I gotta make sure that people know that, one Regina Rose, my mother, is actually in the recording studio right now.
- 0:58You wanna say something, Mom?
- 1:00Say hello.
- 1:01Hello.
- 1:01I love Notre Dame.
- 1:04I love it.
- 1:06Well done.
- 1:07Well done.
- 1:07Yeah.
- 1:08Um- All right, so guys, we're recording on Thursday.
- 1:12We're recording five days after the BYU game?
- 1:16Yeah.
- 1:16Five?
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:17So let's just go ahead and- Let's- rip off the Band-Aid and get into it.
- 1:22Yeah.
- 1:23Tal, let's get into some offense here.
- 1:25Look, we had 21 carries between Jonas and, Nolan James nolan James Jr.
- 1:32had a great...
- 1:34A good game.
- 1:34I'm not gonna say great, obviously, but he had a good game.
- 1:38Jonas, he didn't get the ball enough, and Aeneas didn't do anything at all.
- 1:45I...
- 1:45We ran the ball 30 times, which is something that I don't think we do some- I think we're into close to 40 sometimes.
- 1:53Well, I think the distribution somewhere, if we've got 70 plays, it's usually pretty evenly distributed- Yes between pass and run.
- 2:00So- But- 30 isn't abnormal then we had 49 passes attempted, and CJ Carr didn't do great.
- 2:07Shout-out to Jayden Greathouse.
- 2:09He had a good game, but- A good game?
- 2:12He had a great game.
- 2:13He had a great game, but it's the fact that our offense played okay.
- 2:20It wasn't anything special.
- 2:22Dude, talk about the coaches.
- 2:23Talk about the play calling.
- 2:24Well- It's the, it's the re- That's what I'm gonna get into it's, it's red zone.
- 2:27It's red zone.
- 2:28Let's be, let's be honest.
- 2:29It's red zone.
- 2:30It's red zone.
- 2:30It's, um, immaturity almost.
- 2:33I think the CJ Carr thing, goal line, the fumble where you spike the ball and it didn't really- Didn't have possession.
- 2:41Yeah, it's, it's something that's so stupid and that should just never happen, and I don't know why it happened, but, you know, it will happen sometimes.
- 2:50Jack Larson, he played well.
- 2:52I don't...
- 2:53Again, nothing spectacular.
- 2:55Micah Gilbert, asides from that one-handed catch, he did some things good but not a lot.
- 3:00And then Faison did good, but, CJ Carr was pretty inefficient this game, and you could see it on display.
- 3:07He looked nervous.
- 3:08He wasn't as accurate as we've seen him be.
- 3:11The seam play, first drive, Jordan Faison wide open in the seam, and he just overthrew it by a mile.
- 3:18It's just things that we just haven't seen in- I'm just also not impressed with the play calling as well.
- 3:24But to be honest, I don't have a lot of words for the offense.
- 3:29It's mainly for the defense.
- 3:31Like, my biggest concerns are for the defense, but I'm gonna let William do it.
- 3:35Calvin, talk about Mike Denbrock.
- 3:36Mike Denbrock, he played the game, I don't wanna say conservative, but he didn't play very smart either.
- 3:43I just- It was very vanilla.
- 3:46It was.
- 3:46You know, like- There's nothing special there's nothing, there's nothing that we showed BYU that we haven't showed everyone else.
- 3:54And it was almost as if we went in entitled.
- 3:58Yeah.
- 3:59Like, we were gonna win this game just by being who we are.
- 4:02And- And I think if you play a clean football game- We do we probably win that game- It's- by being who we are, but we didn't- Yeah play a clean football game and and yeah, it was vanilla.
- 4:12You know, we didn't play a clean football game and CJ Carr, the thing, he's throwing triple coverage slot fades to the tight ends, to the wide receivers.
- 4:21Denbrock doesn't call a great game.
- 4:22He just calls something basic and I think- Or, l- look, i- it's easy to go after Denbrock.
- 4:28I think the, the vanilla play calling is absolutely on him, but CJ was doing stuff that we hadn't seen him do for the prior six games- Yeah which was these, uh, these slot fades- He's not that we throw to tight ends.
- 4:42And speaking of which, our best tight end, Cooper Flanagan, was not playing because of an injured hamstring.
- 4:47So all of a sudden we're gonna start chucking it around slot fades to our tight ends?
- 4:52It's just, it was, it was weird.
- 4:54It doesn't make sense in a way.
- 4:57And, you know, I'm not trying...
- 4:59It's something that just is annoying and we try not to hate on them because it's a tough game.
- 5:05But, we didn't play to our best ability- No at all.
- 5:09And our best, our best game, I think we win this by one score, but I'm just not impressed.
- 5:16I don't think we were very good on third down.
- 5:19Yeah, we were 8 for 19.
- 5:20And our, like, we did good on fourth down, four for four, but that doesn't mean anything.
- 5:25Our offense did good, but, 5.3 yards per pass, that's not very good, and 3.8, yards per rush.
- 5:33I, I don't have a lot to say about our offensive performance, but, yeah.
- 5:39No, if you're, if you're gonna get over 70 snaps in a game, you're probably winning that game just be- with the way football's played, especially the way...
- 5:48We don't play up-tempo.
- 5:49BYU doesn't play up-tempo.
- 5:5170 some odd, plays in the game, we should be able to win this game handily.
- 5:58But again, when you are as inefficient as we were in the red zone, and if you just push out the red zone to the 30-yard line, we're even worse.
- 6:07I think the worst sequence for us, which was kind of the nail in the coffin in the sense of it kept the door open, was when Sanders intercepts the ball, we have the ball on our 24 and we not only go three and out, but we lose yardage.
- 6:25'Cause we call a quarterback draw- Well, as- instead of running the ball the first, we did run the ball on the first play, but kudos- But- to BYU.
- 6:33The linebacker came around the edge and got James.
- 6:35And then we called the screen the second play, and that's just not a good thing if I'm- No, no.
- 6:39We called the screen the last play.
- 6:40It was a quarterback draw with CJ on the second.
- 6:43Yeah.
- 6:43Yeah, it's- It's, it's just like, it, it, it, again, CJ against Wisconsin when the wide receivers had a seven, eight-yard cushion, he was just taking what the defense gave him.
- 6:55But this game, he was forcing stuff, and, it was so out of character.
- 6:59It's unsettling.
- 7:00Even five days later, it's still unsettling as we verbalize all this.
- 7:05William, what was your most fru- frus- I mean, what was the thing you were most frustrated with on offense?
- 7:10Just the play calling, you know?
- 7:12If it's second and eight, don't throw like a short route.
- 7:16Maybe run the ball.
- 7:17Nolan James was averaging four or five yards a carry.
- 7:21Run the ball.
- 7:22Go for it on a shorter third and two, third and three.
- 7:26And also here four for four on fourth downs, so we have the ability- To convert to, to run the ball fr- on second and third down.
- 7:37Yeah.
- 7:37Again, we showed especially in the second quarter an ability to run the ball on a very strong defensive line.
- 7:45So guys, it's frustrating.
- 7:46376 yards total offense for Notre Dame.
- 7:50261 passing from CJ, 27 of 49, which is not great.
- 7:54His yards per pass 5.3, and that was mostly because again, the incompletions.
- 7:59Flat out he got outplayed by his counterpart.
- 8:02It's a little bit concerning when you look at the games he's played against top 20 opponents and his output.
- 8:09Now granted, this is his first top 20 game in the first full year as a starter, so we'll give him that.
- 8:16Um, but you know- His second full year.
- 8:18Or first...
- 8:19Oh, I'm sorry, second full year.
- 8:20Thank you.
- 8:21If we're gonna beat Miami, which at this point in time seems like- We have to the only way we're gonna make the playoff, if we're gonna beat Miami, we have to be significantly better than we were against BYU.
- 8:33Yeah.
- 8:33Not, not a little bit better, significantly better.
- 8:36And say what you want about the last play of the game, PI, one second left, but that's not the play call.
- 8:42It's not the throw that we should have had, to be honest.
- 8:44I- No.
- 8:45The glance play that we did against Georgia and Indiana, what you called the Notre Dame special, where they basically do that crossing route, right?
- 8:53They were blitzing their linebackers.
- 8:54It's straight man on man.
- 8:56Jordan Faizon had to come out of the game on the last play'cause he was so tired.
- 9:00No, it wasn't, he wasn't, he was a decoy.
- 9:03I mean, your best receiver is a decoy on the last play.
- 9:07And he's so tired.
- 9:08He...
- 9:09And he's a competitor.
- 9:11He's, he's very well-conditioned.
- 9:13If he gets tired and he becomes a decoy, there has to be something wrong.
- 9:17Yeah.
- 9:18And so let's get into that really quickly before we go on to defense.
- 9:22The personnel usage on offense was pretty abhorrent as well.
- 9:26We had three receivers play 77, I think there were 79 total snaps on offense.
- 9:32I think Faison came out for one or two plays.
- 9:36Gilbert came out for one or two plays.
- 9:38Greathouse came out for one or two plays.
- 9:39Mylan Graham came in only because Faison needed a blow, um,'cause he was so wiped out.
- 9:46Pause.
- 9:47Mega pause.
- 9:49But- So anyways, let's not get into the whole Jonazz Walton thing.
- 9:53He stands up the m- the middle linebacker on his touchdown run.
- 9:59Literally stands the guy up.
- 10:01This 18-year-old kid stands a guy up.
- 10:04The next series coming out, you just assume that Walton's gonna be the back in the backfield.
- 10:09It was James.
- 10:10I get it.
- 10:11Again, this is- He had a good game, yes, but he's also, like Jonaz needs to get snaps.
- 10:16He needs to get meaningful snaps.
- 10:17He's proven that he is a good running back.
- 10:20He's the breakaway guy.
- 10:21Y'all are, y'all are confusing it.
- 10:23It's not, it's not or, it's and.
- 10:26Yes, it's and.
- 10:27It's not, it's not or.
- 10:28You're absolutely right.
- 10:29It's not or.
- 10:30Also- So yeah, the personnel usage, again, I, just confounding.
- 10:35It makes you question how useful and how important Cooper Flanagan is because before this game it seemed like our tight ends were almost irrelevant in this offense.
- 10:44They were there for blocking and not much for receiving.
- 10:47And then Cooper Flanagan comes out and now something weird happens.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:52I don't, I don't get it.
- 10:53I don't know if this is Denbrock.
- 10:55I don't know if this is CJ audibling into different plays.
- 11:00It's just the whole thing's confounding.
- 11:03All right.
- 11:05Look, there are certain bright spots, as in JD Greathouse's good game, Nolan James' good game.
- 11:12Let's end on this positive of this part of the, you know, the recap.
- 11:18Let's go to defense where there's gonna be a lot of negative.
- 11:21Let's get it out of the way.
- 11:23William, defense.
- 11:25So defensively, I think the biggest takeaway here is, one, what were we doing in the first half?
- 11:3321 points is unacceptable.
- 11:35It felt like they were unstoppable.
- 11:37It felt like every third down you were just praying that something crazy happened so we could just get the defense off the field.
- 11:44Eight of 12- Eight of 12 on third down on third down.
- 11:47BYU, who going into the game, I don't know if they were 50%.
- 11:52That is Yeah, no.
- 11:53They were like, they were like 52 maybe.
- 11:56It was terrible.
- 11:57And second, probably the biggest thing, why the hell are you running zones?
- 12:02So much though.
- 12:03Why?
- 12:04Why?
- 12:05Our man coverage, we have the best secondary in the nation.
- 12:09When we were playing them in man, it was actually really efficient and we were playing great defense.
- 12:15I think the only chunk play was that little slant with the 6'6" tight end on DJ McKinnie, but that was a tough catch and it was solid defense.
- 12:26And a good pass by Bear.
- 12:28Yeah.
- 12:28Yes.
- 12:29So we're not blitzing, we're playing zone.
- 12:32Leonard Moore clearly shaken up from Still sh- still- The concussion still shaken up from the concussion.
- 12:37A Don Schuler Now w- when, when you play zone with a guy like Leonard Moore and he's sitting eight yards off the line, you've completely negated this guy's skillset.
- 12:48You've got the best corner in the country, and this is what you choose to do, Chris Ash?
- 12:53It's, it's a choice Yeah.
- 12:57Also K- the KVA, the way he used him was also horrendous.
- 13:03I saw them blitzing him against the center.
- 13:06What are we doing?
- 13:07He wasn't in coverage a lot.
- 13:09He wasn't doing the KVA things.
- 13:11He wasn't tackling behind the line.
- 13:12And honestly, I don't think it's Maybe some of it's on him.
- 13:16I think it's Chris Ash though mostly.
- 13:18What are we doing?
- 13:19We're not using our players.
- 13:20We're not putting Leonard Moore in man coverage.
- 13:23We're not, we're not bringing Shuler down in the box.
- 13:26We're not bringing Talich down in the box.
- 13:28Everything that we talked about in the preview the prior week we did not do.
- 13:33Yes.
- 13:34And also Adon Shuler, you know, our mom mentioned this, he l- something looks wrong with him.
- 13:40He's hurt.
- 13:41He's- It is, is, is clear he's playing hurt and- He's been that way for the last three games.
- 13:45He's not playing- He doesn't look like- with any sort of- a Don Shuler.
- 13:48He doesn't look like- acceleration the heart of the defense basically.
- 13:51He doesn't look like that guy.
- 13:53And it's not good because you see the defense also gets shaken up.
- 13:56And she also said this, is that we're looking to the sideline too much.
- 14:01Yeah.
- 14:01It was- It's like- It was the first two and a h- what we saw in that game was the first two and a half games of last year And it was awful Guys not knowing where they're supposed to be and who they're supposed to covering.
- 14:12We can't even sub correctly.
- 14:15It's just, guys, if the play calling or if the scheme is too complex, then what happens is you can't play with any cl- sort of Al G- I'm gonna employ Al Golden's name.
- 14:29Al Golden used to call it clarity.
- 14:31Clarity allows speed.
- 14:33And the team's not playing with any sort of speed because they don't know where they're supposed to be.
- 14:38You saw a lot of miscommunications on third down.
- 14:41Like,"Hey, go get this guy.
- 14:43What are we doing?" You n- honestly, make it simple.
- 14:47Play man.
- 14:47I don't know why we're doing all this fancy shmancy zone stuff.
- 14:50Make it simple.
- 14:51That's your man.
- 14:52Guard him.
- 14:52I'd rather get beat trying to play our best players the way they're supposed to play than to play not to lose.
- 15:02And on both sides of the ball, I think the coordinators chose to play not to lose, but particularly Chris Ash.
- 15:10And Bubacar, that play, you know, that happens but also we still need to get pressure.
- 15:16There still needs to be other things happening.
- 15:19You know, zero sacks isn't very acceptable to say the least.
- 15:23Especially when they're starting a freshman tackle.
- 15:25Yes.
- 15:26And I wanna point back to the USC game last year is- Basically what we did was we run, we ran man most of the game.
- 15:34We blitzed some of our linebackers, and Leonard Moore was on Malachi Lemon, and that's probably, that's probably one of the best wide receiver groups that we've faced in the past couple years.
- 15:46And it was simple, and our defense performed very well And then we get into this game, and what you, you don't need to Littlemore doesn't need to be on the best receiver, but he just has to be playing man with the entire team.
- 16:03The linebackers need to blitz a little, maybe even a little safety blitz, a few stunts here and there, and it just doesn't happen.
- 16:12We play zone most of the game, and we get killed, and it's unacceptable.
- 16:17And we think we've taken away Bear Bachmeier's running game.
- 16:21Also, he still had a good amount of, like- He didn't.
- 16:26He really didn't.
- 16:27Yeah, we No, he did that well.
- 16:28Yeah, he did- We did that well, but then- He had 13 carries for 45 yards.
- 16:32That's acceptable.
- 16:33But- He didn't have a rush longer than six yards.
- 16:36So if the whole point of the game plan was to not allow Bear Bach- Bachmeier to kill you with your legs, then clearly, I mean, what, what William showed me on the extended YouTube clips of the Iowa State game the week before, the, the guy can make throws between five and 12 yards.
- 16:57Yeah, but we're making it easy on him.
- 16:59Absolutely.
- 16:59With the soft zones.
- 17:00That's what I'm saying.
- 17:00No one's on him.
- 17:01That's exactly what I'm saying.
- 17:02Like- And- he's clearly accurate in five to 12 yards and that's what we gave him the entire game- That's what I was about to say with zero pressure.
- 17:09You take away his running game, which is obviously his strongest attribute, but he's still a division one quarterback at a high level.
- 17:16He's gonna be able to throw the football, and I just don't think that we really game planned very well for his pass, and we were literally just playing to stop the, his run, and we just got burned in the pass.
- 17:29It was- I think the simple answer here is we made it really easy on him.
- 17:33Yeah.
- 17:33Yes.
- 17:33You can Look, guys, you can play, you can play press man.
- 17:37You can even play zone with robbers to play this kind of offense better, but holy cow, to do what we did, I Amazing.
- 17:49I think Drayk Bowen, you know, Drayk Bowen said that BYU did some things that they hadn't seen on tape before.
- 17:58But BYU's doing some stuff that they had never shown before, and we're completely lost.
- 18:03The misdirection stuff, guys, this is what BYU does.
- 18:07And to see how unprepared we were for the misdirection stuff, ooh, boy.
- 18:12I don't know.
- 18:13I, I, it's Here at the end of the day, guys, the waking up on Sunday morning...
- 18:22And it's funny, no one's We're not talking about the PI.
- 18:24We're not even talking about the one second,'cause it never should've been that way.
- 18:28But- We were talking about this at dinner tonight about existentialism.
- 18:35If Chris Ash and Mike Denbrock and the person who's their boss, Marcus Freeman, aren't having an existential moment about the 2026 and hopefully 2027 season after the coach's performance on Saturday then it's gonna be a real short season.
- 19:00A real short season.
- 19:02On a positive note.
- 19:05On a very positive note special teams were good.
- 19:09They were.
- 19:10Yeah.
- 19:11Porath played well.
- 19:12Porath played well.
- 19:14Uh, Bubba Frazier hopped on that muffed punt.
- 19:18Talich got that TFL on the very bizarre play call to go for it on a fake punt to b- begin the, uh, the third quarter.
- 19:30Um, yeah, it just- I was...
- 19:33Yeah.
- 19:34The, the special teams were a bright spot so let's, let's- Let's end off there.
- 19:39Let's end off there.
- 19:40Let's give our game balls.
- 19:41Okay.
- 19:42Game balls.
- 19:42Calvin offense.
- 19:43Jayden Greathouse.
- 19:45Yeah.
- 19:45Eight receptions, 125 yards.
- 19:47I can't disagree with that.
- 19:49William?
- 19:51I got Jayden Greathouse and Ashton Craig.
- 19:56Okay.
- 19:57Um, I am going to just zag and say Go with James Will Black.
- 20:04Oh, okay.
- 20:05I thought Will Black played really well.
- 20:07Yeah, that's good.
- 20:08William.
- 20:09Defense game ball I have two.
- 20:14I have Jayden Sanders and Christian Gray.
- 20:19Oh.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:21Ooh.
- 20:21Well- Christian Gray getting his flowers.
- 20:23Yeah.
- 20:23Well, I- Uh, one thing we didn't mention is DJ McKinney went to the tent and he looked in pain.
- 20:29Yeah.
- 20:29I don't know if they released news about that yet but- Yeah, what I've read this week is that they're thinking it's a high ankle sprain, so we can assume he's gonna be out for Miami.
- 20:38We might not get him for a while.
- 20:40Yeah, man, that's pretty bad.
- 20:41And me, my defensive game ball is Luke Talich.
- 20:45Same with me.
- 20:46Oh, sorry.
- 20:47I- I don't care stepped on your game ball.
- 20:49I don't care.
- 20:50We have the same thing.
- 20:51Did I deflate your game ball?
- 20:52Nope.
- 20:53It was g- Wow gonna be Luke Talich.
- 20:54All right.
- 20:55But yeah, I mean, he played well.
- 20:59He r- got played well.
- 20:59Yeah.
- 21:00You know?
- 21:00I like- Um, my wild card is gonna be two people.
- 21:05It's gonna be Mom and William.
- 21:07William said the game plan perfectly.
- 21:11Couldn't have said it- What we should have done.
- 21:12Yeah, what we should have done very well.
- 21:15And Mom made some very, very good takes after the game that I just thought were very nice, and during the game as well.
- 21:22We'll repeat a couple if you can recall.
- 21:25"They're looking to the sideline too much.
- 21:27Like, Adon Truitt doesn't look good.
- 21:29Um, Chris Ash is playing too conservative.
- 21:33Mike Denbrock's playing too conservative.
- 21:34Just a lot of this negative stuff, but at the same time I was trying to be positive but, I got very upset at at the end of the first half.
- 21:44William, wild card.
- 21:46My wild card is the fact that nobody mentioned the one second or PI call, From the staff from, from the staff or any of the players in the post-game.
- 21:56Yeah.
- 21:57That could've been very bad.
- 21:59Yeah.
- 22:00Yeah.
- 22:00Well, they didn't mention it because to be honest, they didn't- They knew.
- 22:04They- They knew Someone on the staff has to know.
- 22:07There's gotta be an analyst where that's almost their job.
- 22:10And you said it as well, like, we should never have been in that position, but Correct.
- 22:15Correct.
- 22:16And I'm gonna go completely out of left field for my game ball.
- 22:20My game ball goes to Coach Rich Murphy So William and I were up in Knoxville and Nashville this weekend.
- 22:30William had a soccer game in both of those cities.
- 22:34In the middle of last week, Rich Murphy, my teammate and associate head coach at the University of Tennessee- UT um he reached out to me and said,"Hey, I've got two tickets for you and William for the Tennessee Bama game." William's game ended right around 4:00.
- 22:52We drove 30 minutes.
- 22:54We got to Neyland right at the end of the first quarter and watched until Tennessee scored the dagger touchdown.
- 23:02That place was rocking, 102,000 maniacal Volunteer fans.
- 23:08Just an awesome, beautiful day to watch SEC football, which, you know, everybody's got I got my own opinions on the SEC, but man, they know how to create an environment there.
- 23:20And Neyland is really, really cool and can't recommend it enough for anybody who's looking to experience what kinda the best of college football is.
- 23:29So- Yeah Rich, thank you very, very much.
- 23:33It's awesome.
- 23:34Yeah.
- 23:35Um- Yeah let's just end on that high note.

- 24:45I'm sure he would have some interesting takes, and probably just mimic a lot of what we were saying here, but I don't wanna speak for him.
