- 0:00Speaker 1: It's just sixteen minutes away from ten o'clock and it
- 0:03Speaker 1: is being reported today by Sky News that police have
- 0:06Speaker 1: launched an investigation into allegations of misconduct within the Northern
- 0:11Speaker 1: Territories Anti corruption watchdog. Now joining me on the line
- 0:15Speaker 1: right now is Sky News, Well, Northern Territory correspondent or
- 0:19Speaker 1: news chief. I'm not sure exactly what your title is,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Matt Cunningham.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good morning. Have we got you Matt Cunningham? Are you
- 0:28Speaker 2: there all right? We're having some technical issues there.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Let's see if we are able to get Mash on
- 0:35Speaker 1: the line. I'm not one hundred percent sure what's going on, Matt.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Can you hear us?
- 0:41Speaker 3: No?
- 0:42Speaker 1: I seem to be having some technical issues at the moment.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I don't have Matt Cunningham for some reason. Some tech
- 0:48Speaker 1: issues there. So we'll see what we can do and
- 0:50Speaker 1: if we are able to get mass back on the
- 0:52Speaker 1: line and we'll go to him in just a couple
- 0:55Speaker 1: of moments. But yes, from what is being reported, what
- 0:58Speaker 1: we can see is it have launched an investigation into
- 1:02Speaker 1: allegations of misconduct within the Northern Territori's anti corruption watchdog.
- 1:07Speaker 1: That is what Matt Cunningham from Sky News is reporting,
- 1:10Speaker 1: so we'll see if we can get Matt back on
- 1:12Speaker 1: the line and find out exactly what the situation is
- 1:15Speaker 1: with this investigation. In the meantime, a few messages coming
- 1:20Speaker 1: through this morning. I've got one here from Peter and
- 1:22Speaker 1: it says, good morning three six years Barnaby Joyce in
- 1:26Speaker 1: isolation in the USA. If you know anyone in the
- 1:29Speaker 1: government there, can you ask to make it permanent, says Peter.
- 1:33Speaker 3: One here from I'm not too sure who this one
- 1:36Speaker 3: is from, but it says that Big w Woolworth's and
- 1:39Speaker 3: Cole's and probably others have now installed electronic manual check
- 1:44Speaker 3: in and remove the pen and paper version.
- 1:46Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Thank you very much for making us aware of that.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I hopefully have Matt Cunningham on the line. Good morning
- 1:51Speaker 1: to you, Matt.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Good good mate. I've got you now, Matt Cunningham.
- 1:56Speaker 1: What is we I'm obviously just seeing that Sky News
- 2:00Speaker 1: that you are reporting that. Well, we've got a situation
- 2:04Speaker 1: where Northern Territory police are investigating or have launched an
- 2:08Speaker 1: investigation into the Northern Territories ICAC.
- 2:12Speaker 4: That's right now. I've been able to confirm that there's
- 2:15Speaker 4: a police operation. It's been code named Operation. It's being
- 2:19Speaker 4: run by the Special References Unit of the Anti Police, which,
- 2:24Speaker 4: of course, as we know, is that special Unit Katie
- 2:26Speaker 4: that looks into things such as conflicts of interest and
- 2:30Speaker 4: allegations of corruption. Now it's investigating allegations of his conduct,
- 2:36Speaker 4: historical allegations of his conduct that should be pointed out
- 2:38Speaker 4: within the Office of the Independent Commissioner against Corruption. Now
- 2:43Speaker 4: these allegations predate the appointment of the current Commissioner, Michael Witches.
- 2:51Speaker 4: They relate to people who are no longer working at
- 2:55Speaker 4: the Northern Territory i CAP. But I have confirmed that
- 2:59Speaker 4: the Special References the Unit have taken detailed witness statements
- 3:03Speaker 4: in relation to this investigation, including statements from former staff members. Now,
- 3:09Speaker 4: as we reported before, there was that issue Katie where
- 3:13Speaker 4: there was an almost out Australian police officer by the
- 3:16Speaker 4: name of David mcinlay his award of investigation contracts at
- 3:21Speaker 4: the office of the IKAK. Now he's the facto partner.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Kate Kelly at the time was the Director of Investigation.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Now my understanding is that that's one of the things
- 3:29Speaker 4: that's been investigated. There's no suggestion of any wrongdoing. In fact,
- 3:33Speaker 4: we probably should point out that the KAQ Inspector actually
- 3:39Speaker 4: investigated this issue and he's found he actually dismissed a
- 3:43Speaker 4: complain about this. But what we do know is that
- 3:46Speaker 4: the police are now investigating that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah, goodness, may I mean it is? It does sound
- 3:52Speaker 1: pretty serious. I don't know that anybody would have expected
- 3:56Speaker 1: that the Northern Territory Police would be investigating the ik
- 4:00Speaker 1: So it does sound as though it's a pretty serious situation.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Here, that's right. And we've got a statement from the
- 4:07Speaker 4: Order Territory Police confirming that they confirmed that they are
- 4:10Speaker 4: investigating an historical matter in relation to the Office of
- 4:16Speaker 4: the Independent Commissioner against Corruption. They said they couldn't provide
- 4:19Speaker 4: any more details because of that investigation is ongoing now.
- 4:25Speaker 4: I also went to the ICACH for comment. I just
- 4:28Speaker 4: point out that I tried to contact David McKinlay and
- 4:30Speaker 4: Kate Kelly. They didn't return calls yesterday and haven't responded
- 4:35Speaker 4: to messages asking for comment in relation to this matter.
- 4:39Speaker 4: When I went to the ICACK, Michael rich has actually
- 4:42Speaker 4: pointed me to a statement that he put out a
- 4:44Speaker 4: couple of months ago, basically saying that the ka will
- 4:47Speaker 4: cooperate with any investigation into its office, but it's inappropriate
- 4:52Speaker 4: for the IKAC to comment on any of those matters
- 4:55Speaker 4: in relation to allegations or investigations into its staff, as
- 5:00Speaker 4: he says, he wouldn't comment on investigations that the IKAK
- 5:05Speaker 4: was undertaking undertaking. So yeah, it's all. It's all the
- 5:10Speaker 4: pretty serious business. But it's probably not a hell of
- 5:13Speaker 4: a lot more we can say at the moment other
- 5:15Speaker 4: than police have concerned. But that investigation is happening.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, And I was going to say, Matt, I wonder
- 5:21Speaker 1: if we ever will really know a huge amount more
- 5:23Speaker 1: detailed than what we've got today.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Well, I suppose that will depend on where this investigation
- 5:30Speaker 4: ends up at Katie and the special references inducting this investigation.
- 5:37Speaker 4: You know, sometimes these investigations can take many months, so
- 5:41Speaker 4: you know, we may not know for some time where
- 5:43Speaker 4: this all ends up, but certainly it's something that's being
- 5:45Speaker 4: investigated at the moment.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, Matt Cunningham, A busy week for you, mate.
- 5:51Speaker 4: It has seen, Yes, and I think we can get
- 5:54Speaker 4: an out the Chief Minister in the next hour and
- 5:56Speaker 4: a half in relations to what we can can't do.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Come the twentieth of December, tating and also an interesting
- 6:05Speaker 4: challenge in the Supreme Court today when it comes to
- 6:06Speaker 4: the vaccine mandates.
- 6:08Speaker 2: So I did see that.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Yes, I hope you to quietly wind out for Christmas.
- 6:12Speaker 2: It's not going to happen. No, I had just seen that.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So Mario Service, the president of the United NT Business Incorporated,
- 6:20Speaker 1: they have just issued a statement saying that today they
- 6:23Speaker 1: are today commencing action in the NT Supreme Court to
- 6:27Speaker 1: declare the mandatory vaccination directions of the Northern Territory CHOW unlawful.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it's going to be interesting. You have noticed that
- 6:35Speaker 4: there's been some decisions. I think last week there was
- 6:37Speaker 4: a decision in relation to the vaccine mandate of one
- 6:41Speaker 4: of the mining companies. Maybe it would the HT but
- 6:45Speaker 4: I could be wrong that the founder of the vaccine
- 6:49Speaker 4: mandate couldn't be implemented. So it'll be interesting to see
- 6:51Speaker 4: where this one goes. Katie. It's certainly an issue that's
- 6:55Speaker 4: created plenty of controversy in the top end over the
- 7:00Speaker 4: past month or so. Yeah, it was Supreme Court today.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It most certainly has.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And Matt Cunningham, we've had to move the week that
- 7:08Speaker 1: was tomorrow, first time ever in the history of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: week that was it's happening at ten o'clock because literally
- 7:15Speaker 1: everybody has to be at a school.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Assembly almost almost Matt, good on you mate.
- 7:28Speaker 1: We'll talk to you again very soon. Thank you for
- 7:31Speaker 1: keeping us up to date with that story. In relation
- 7:33Speaker 1: to the Ikak
