- Lucas: Welcome back to The Story of Turkey. If you’ve been following us through the episodes on the harem, the coffee houses, and even the strange musical marches that confused Mozart, you know we’ve spent a lot of time looking at the cultural pulse of Istanbul. But today, we need to talk about the iron spine that held the entire empire together for over six centuries, and ultimately, broke it. Luna: The Janissaries, right? The ones who hung Grand Viziers. Lucas: Exactly. The Yeni Cerri, or New Order. They weren’t just soldiers; they were a state within a state, a slave-soldier class created specifically to bypass the traditional Turkish nobility. It started around 1365 under Sultan Murad I, who needed a professional standing army that owed loyalty to him alone, not to local warlords or tribal leaders. Luna: And that’s where the devshirme system comes in. Lucas: Right. The Ottomans would collect tribute from their Christian subjects in the Balkans—mostly boys between ten and twenty years old. These children were taken, converted to Islam, and sent to training schools where they learned horsemanship, swordsmanship, and Islamic theology. By the time they were adults, they were utterly dependent on the Sultan for their status and wealth. Luna: It sounds brutal, but it was also incredibly effective. Lucas: For three hundred years, it was the most feared military force in Europe. They were disciplined, well-paid, and often better educated than the common populace. But here is the twist: because they were slaves of the Sultan, they couldn’t inherit property or hold certain administrative posts, so they turned to politics. They realized that if they controlled the palace, they controlled the treasury. Luna: So they stopped being soldiers and started being kingmakers. Lucas: Precisely. By the seventeenth century, the strict discipline had eroded. The devshirme recruitment slowed down, and the corps began accepting sons of existing members, turning it into a hereditary guild rather than a meritocratic slave army. They started interfering in succession, overthrowing sultans, and demanding huge cash handouts just to stay quiet. Luna: This must have made reforming the military nearly impossible. Lucas: It was a nightmare. Several sultans tried to create new, European-style armies to compete with Russia and Austria, but the Janissaries would simply riot and demand those new armies be disbanded. Selim III tried in the late eighteenth century, and they killed him. His successor, Abdülhamid I, was forced to reinstate the old ways just to keep his head. Luna: So when did things finally change? Lucas: Enter Mahmud II. He took the throne in 1808, a young man surrounded by enemies. For eighteen years, he played a dangerous game, pretending to support the Janissaries while secretly building a new private army called the Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye. He knew he had to strike before they struck him first. Luna: How did he pull off such a risky coup? Lucas: He used religion as a weapon. In May 1826, Mahmud II issued a fatwa declaring that anyone who refused to serve in the new army was disobeying God. He then ordered the new troops to march into the capital, inciting the public and the religious scholars to turn against the Janissaries. When the corps revolted as usual, they found themselves not just opposed by the army, but hated by the people of Istanbul. Luna: That is a clever use of public sentiment. Lucas: It was ruthless. The Janissary barracks in Istanbul caught fire—whether by accident or design is still debated—and Mahmud’s forces slaughtered thousands inside. It was known as the Auspicious Incident, a name that completely masks the brutality of what happened. The corps was dissolved, and many of its leaders were executed. Luna: Did the empire survive this shock? Lucas: In the short term, yes. Mahmud II built a modern military that could actually defend the borders, which helped stabilize the empire for a few more decades. But the underlying issues of economic decay and nationalist uprisings in the Balkans continued to worsen. The Janissaries were gone, but the patient was still dying. Luna: It feels like removing one organ didn't cure the disease. Lucas: That’s a good way to put it. The removal of the Janissaries allowed for centralization and modernization, which paved the way for the Tanzimat reforms later in the nineteenth century. But it also removed a key pillar of the social contract that had held the diverse empire together for centuries. Luna: Before we dive deeper into the aftermath, let me pause here for a moment. Lucas: Sure thing. Luna: If these conversations help you see the past with clearer eyes, consider supporting the show directly. Lucas: We rely on listeners like you to keep these episodes ad-free and deeply researched. If you can spare a few dollars, buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo keeps the lights on and the research going. Luna: It really makes a difference for independent history shows. Lucas: Thanks for listening. Now, back to the ashes of the Janissary corps. Luna: What happened to the soldiers who weren't killed? Lucas: Many were stripped of their pensions and left to fend for themselves. Some joined criminal gangs in Istanbul, while others drifted into the countryside. A surprising number actually joined the new regular army, bringing their combat experience with them, though without their political power. Luna: Did any artifacts survive the purge? Lucas: Yes, their distinctive uniforms, the tall fur hats, and the intricate swords are now in museums across Turkey and Europe. Their drums and zurnas, those loud reed instruments we mentioned earlier, were banned for a while but eventually reintroduced as ceremonial symbols of the new national identity. Luna: It’s ironic that their music outlived their power. Lucas: Very ironic. The Mehter band, once a tool of psychological warfare, became a symbol of Ottoman heritage that Europeans admired long after the Ottomans had lost the ability to project military strength. It’s a reminder that culture often lingers long after politics collapses. Luna: How did this event affect the rest of the empire? Lucas: It sent a clear message that the Sultan was no longer a figurehead. Mahmud II centralized power, abolished the title of Grand Vizier for a brief period, and ruled directly. It was the beginning of the modern Turkish state, albeit a fragile one, moving away from the decentralized feudal structures of the early empire. Luna: So the Janissaries were both the shield and the cage. Lucas: That’s exactly right. They protected the empire from external threats for centuries, but they also prevented necessary adaptation, trapping the Sultan in a cycle of bribes and compromises until Mahmud II finally broke the cycle with fire and steel. Luna: Did Mahmud II face any backlash afterward? Lucas: Oh, plenty. Religious conservatives hated him for breaking with tradition, and some provincial governors rebelled, believing he was too westernized. But he managed to suppress these uprisings, partly because the Janissary vacuum had been filled by loyalist troops. Luna: It seems like a very high-stakes gamble. Lucas: It was. If he had failed, he likely would have ended up like Selim III, dead in his palace. Instead, he secured his legacy as one of the most significant reformers in Ottoman history, setting the stage for the modern era. Luna: What does this tell us about power structures? Lucas: It shows that institutions created for efficiency can become obstacles to progress if they are allowed to calcify. The Janissaries were efficient warriors, but they became inefficient rulers. Their removal was painful, but it allowed the Ottoman state to try, however unsuccessfully, to catch up with the industrializing world. Luna: Was there any immediate relief in Istanbul after the fires died down? Lucas: There was a sense of liberation, certainly. The constant extortion payments stopped, and the streets felt safer. But the economic strain remained, and the political landscape was still dominated by conservative factions who resented Mahmud’s changes. Luna: Did the new army perform well in battle soon after? Lucas: They did much better than the Janissaries ever did in their final decades. They won several engagements against Egyptian forces led by Muhammad Ali Pasha, proving that professional training and modern equipment could overcome numerical disadvantages. Luna: It’s a classic case of quality over quantity. Lucas: Exactly. Though quantity mattered too, since the Ottoman population was growing, they could field larger armies. The problem had always been cohesion and command, which the Janissaries had destroyed through their politicization. Luna: How do we remember them today? Lucas: Mostly as a cautionary tale. In Turkey, they are remembered with a mix of nostalgia for their discipline and shame for their corruption. Museums display their gear, and historians study their rise and fall as a masterclass in institutional decay. Luna: Do people still visit the old barracks sites? Lucas: The main site in Istanbul is now part of the city’s urban fabric, with buildings constructed over the ruins. There are plaques and markers, but it’s easy to walk past without knowing the blood spilled there in 1826. Luna: History often hides in plain sight. Lucas: It does. And beneath the modern streets of Istanbul lies the weight of every empire that came before, including the iron fist that finally tried to break free from its own chains. Luna: What’s next for our journey through Turkey? Lucas: Next time, we’ll look at the Tanzimat reforms, the attempt to modernize law and society in the mid-nineteenth century, and why those efforts ultimately couldn't save the crumbling empire from nationalism. Luna: I’ll be there. Lucas: Until then, keep looking closely at the foundations of the world.
