- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen Knife for doing.
- 0:35Quicker, quicker, quicker. Yeah.
- 0:41Welcome back to a Hamster with a blunt Pen Knife, a Doctor Who
- 0:45commentary podcast and it's me, Dylan, here once again.
- 0:48And of course, I'm joined by Joe.
- 0:50Joe, how you doing? Hello.
- 0:52Yes, I'm here. It's been second since we
- 0:54recorded our episode one Coventry, but let's pretend
- 1:00several weeks have passed. This episode has all of my
- 1:03favorite Sylvester McCoy quotes in it.
- 1:05All of them. Yes.
- 1:06OK, amazing. We'll have to point them out as
- 1:09we as we head through it. Now I realized on the last
- 1:12episode, I didn't tell you I love this for many reasons and
- 1:16what it is. But this episode is sort of
- 1:20partly or this story sort of partly responsible for my job
- 1:24that I do professionally. And and that is because when I
- 1:28got into Doctor Who, I got obsessed with the making of
- 1:32Doctor Who. And when I used to go to
- 1:34conventions as a kid, I wasn't really interested in seeing
- 1:36doctors and companions but special effects people,
- 1:39producers, writers, directors and one convention very early on
- 1:44and this is what a strange child I was.
- 1:46I bought a the conventions I used to go to called Panopticon
- 1:50and they were held in Coventry. They were the glasses big
- 1:53convention every year and real time pictures they do.
- 1:57Mythmakers released a series of videos called the Panopticon
- 2:01tapes and it was highlights from conventions.
- 2:03And then the fifth video was just a panel on the make it.
- 2:06It was an hour long panel on the making of Dragon Fire and I
- 2:10bought it from a convention for like a tenor and it's probably
- 2:14it's the year it's broadcast. So and it's got Chris Clough and
- 2:17it's got the special effects team, it's got Ian Briggs, it's
- 2:19got Sophie Aldrid, it's got Dominic Glynn.
- 2:22So it's just like all the behind the scenes people and Sophie
- 2:26Aldrid and I watched that on repeat.
- 2:30I would say from about the age of nine.
- 2:33At the age of 16, I was just obsessed with it for some
- 2:35reason. And I it's not the only thing,
- 2:38but then they're all Doctor Who related.
- 2:40But it's it's one of the it's something I directly point at as
- 2:44something being obsessed with and being like that shaped my
- 2:47life. Is there anything you gleamed
- 2:49from that tape that you now got on to use in your career?
- 2:56No, I don't think. It was.
- 2:58You surprised me, but it sort of is still like the the nuts and
- 3:02bolts of television. Yeah, I mean, there's that.
- 3:04There's the the making of Silver Nemesis again.
- 3:08Chris Glough, my hero. You know what?
- 3:10I say it every single time I go to record a podcast.
- 3:12I'll quote Gary Downey. I'll go up the stairs and go
- 3:15Let's make magic. And then what else?
- 3:21BBV in Real Time's always had making ofs on their videos, so
- 3:26all of those things contribute. And I used to watch the making
- 3:29ofs more than I'd watch the dramas.
- 3:30I'd watch them again and again and again.
- 3:33Did you have that book? Did you mention that?
- 3:34Just send the in the visitation one.
- 3:36Yes, I did. Yes.
- 3:37Yeah, sorry, I'll clearly wasn't.
- 3:39No, no, no. I didn't mention it, but I have.
- 3:41I'm always accused of not listening, you know, But that,
- 3:45you know, that was a really interesting book.
- 3:47That was basically it was mostly talking to the director, wasn't
- 3:50it? But he took you through every
- 3:51part of the production. It was a wonderful time.
- 3:53Doctor Who Magazine was doing that as well, wasn't it a day in
- 3:56the life of the producer? I know that was just to throw
- 3:58the spotlight on chains here a bit, but it's weird as well.
- 4:02As a kid, I would like from the say about the age of 10 when I
- 4:07picked up Doc 2 magazine, the first thing I was going for
- 4:10after the news was the archive section.
- 4:13It wasn't the comic strip, all the reviews.
- 4:15It was all the behind the scenes, yes.
- 4:17So, like, you know, Andrew Pixley's got a lot to answer
- 4:20for. Well, maybe you can give him a
- 4:22job one day. You know exactly.
- 4:24He can write my life story. I think that's rather wonderful,
- 4:27you know, And there's another, I'll save it until the next
- 4:30episode, but there's another Doctor Who thing that's sort of
- 4:33related to this that also had an influence, but that is another
- 4:37story. You've gotta stop enticing like
- 4:39this, you know? Honestly.
- 4:41Well, look the story that inspired your career.
- 4:45Shall we watch Episode 2, Dragon Fire?
- 4:48So do you want to count us in? In 321 let's go always.
- 4:55Usually 5 in it out, one in my now.
- 4:58I bloody love the McCoy titles and theme.
- 5:01I don't care what anybody says. If you think this is bad, you're
- 5:05a fucking idiot. This is the only theme that
- 5:08gives me nostalgic children is the one I heard as a child.
- 5:11Well, actually there's two themes.
- 5:12There's this and the theme tune to the time travelers BBV, which
- 5:16is McCoy and Aldred reprising their almost roles.
- 5:20And both of those give me the same nostalgic feeling.
- 5:24Oh, you know the other one. Whatever one that gets me Gavin
- 5:28is duh, duh, duh duh duh. What were they?
- 5:31Oh that. The early years.
- 5:33Yeah, the Year Tapes. But also, it was the Year Tapes.
- 5:36But have you ever heard the full version of that song?
- 5:39That. Duh, duh.
- 5:41It's about halfway through. Well, found it's it's on a EP
- 5:47called Variations on a Theme. Wow.
- 5:50I mean, I feel like everybody should stop listening to this
- 5:53podcast now and just go out and listen to it.
- 5:57You know what? I'm gonna.
- 5:58I'm gonna do a bit of what's it called ASMR now for everyone
- 6:01listening and every single person listening is even gonna
- 6:04have a stiffy or get moist. Are you ready?
- 6:08Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do.
- 6:12Do you remember that? Yes, that's giving.
- 6:14Me giving me revenge of the Cyberman, Seeds of death, all
- 6:18that all that jazz do. You know what that that item did
- 6:20to me? It promised me.
- 6:21Adventure's coming, you know. I know.
- 6:24It's it's a glorious, A glorious moment from the past.
- 6:27Do you know, I think it's so funny that when we catch up with
- 6:30Sylvester McCoy, after he shouts at Glitz, he has his entire
- 6:33pantom on the sequence as he's crawling all over him.
- 6:36I mean, it's about as filthiest docs we've ever got.
- 6:39They're practically 69 in at one point, aren't they?
- 6:43See, you can definitely sit and out this creature very much
- 6:47based on the Xenomorph from Aliens.
- 6:50Perhaps they shouldn't have been doing it in Doctor Who.
- 6:53I think it's a good design I. Agree it's top heavy though,
- 6:55isn't it? It is top heavy, but they built
- 6:57it to go on. They needed to model it on
- 7:00someone they didn't know who'd be playing it.
- 7:02So they built it around Paul McGinnis, who was one of the
- 7:04special effects people. And the actor they got to play
- 7:08the role was about a foot shorter than Paul McGinnis.
- 7:11And so you just end up with, you know, a badly fitting suit,
- 7:16which is just indicative of the problems they faced back then
- 7:18because they didn't know who they were casting.
- 7:21And this was a season that was made in a bit of a panic.
- 7:25Yes, they didn't have the scripts, did they?
- 7:27I mean, people complain about time in the Ronnie, but God
- 7:30bless John Nathan Turner for commissioning something just in
- 7:34case he was producing the next season.
- 7:36Wanted out, didn't he? Yeah.
- 7:38Did you hear some of the pictures he did from the other
- 7:40shows? I mean, they don't sound great,
- 7:41they. Sound awful.
- 7:42And mate, I mean they should have put him on El Dorado.
- 7:44He was custom built for that, no?
- 7:46I know. Only got offered.
- 7:48What's wrong with John Nettles? Bergerac but he got off of
- 7:51Bergerac and when the he he told the BBC.
- 7:55I'll only do it if I can fire John Nettles and move it off
- 7:58guns. No, And that was a massive
- 8:00success. And then he said in hindsight, I
- 8:03should have taken the job then he was gonna take car now with.
- 8:06Him. His tail is heartbreaking.
- 8:08Yeah, it's such a sad. Story.
- 8:10I mean that book, the way that book is structured to show him
- 8:13the hitting those highs and you sort of get to the 20th, don't
- 8:16you, the five doctors and then it's so, so.
- 8:20Yeah, OK. Now we've talked about Star Wars
- 8:22a couple of times, but I think that's a very successful model
- 8:25shot of the planet with ice on one side with a really rousing
- 8:28score. Yeah, it's it's amazing.
- 8:30The only thing I would say is the scales got to be all off.
- 8:34Those are enormous. Shards Voice.
- 8:37Oh, it's a very small planet. Planetoid Planetoid Exactly.
- 8:43Do you do you not love the music for the zombies?
- 8:45What I also like about the subtitles on this is whenever
- 8:50there's just like that tinkling noise, it just goes tinkling.
- 8:55Ohh dear Tinker, there you go. I do wonder if some of the
- 8:59pantomime nature of the story. I mean it is J&T in it.
- 9:03They love doing panto, but also I think that's kind of what
- 9:06appeals to a lot of the guest stars.
- 9:08I think that they are coming it up in this season particularly
- 9:11because it does feel very panto. I think there's an illjudged
- 9:14casting, though. I think some there are some
- 9:17illjudged performances, but I think some of it's no K Amara
- 9:24phenomenal. Pretentious is the word.
- 9:28Do you prefer Mccoy's cream coat or do you prefer his brown coat?
- 9:32Do you know, I would have said brown a while back, but I think,
- 9:36I think I've got more of a taste for the cream one.
- 9:38Yeah, interesting. I prefer the brown.
- 9:41I mean, truthfully, I prefer the TV movie.
- 9:44Get up. Yeah.
- 9:45Well, as the years have gone by and I've suddenly realized the
- 9:48color of his trousers in the TV movie, I like them a bit less.
- 9:51Timing malfunction a week on part of the year where he goes.
- 9:58Oh, you'd like the spaceship, would you?
- 10:02Yes, yes, we have, I think. He's just got that sort of
- 10:04purring minutes. Yeah, that's it.
- 10:07He's he isn't camping it up like Briars is in Paradise Towers.
- 10:11He's got a bit of that Peter Miles energy, you know, just
- 10:14someone who pulls off being maliciously evil a bit too
- 10:17easily. I think he gets the best line of
- 10:19the season as well, which is. Hurry while stocks last.
- 10:26It's great. Very true.
- 10:27Very. True.
- 10:28And I do think I did love Colin Baker and Glitz.
- 10:32I thought that was two very gaudy characters sort of having
- 10:36high jinks together. And Glitz is a bit more
- 10:38dangerous in Trial of the time though.
- 10:40These are the comedy buffoon here, but actually pairs with
- 10:43Mccoywell as well. You don't often say that to you.
- 10:46A guest character switching doctors.
- 10:51It's interesting the concept of him selling his crew as well and
- 10:55you don't really think about it too much as a kid and but you
- 11:00know here we are talking about there's an army of frozen people
- 11:04who all they can remember is their overwhelming fit, like
- 11:08anger and glitz. No problem, just sold them all
- 11:10that. He's a bastard.
- 11:12And then there's an entire massacre in the last episode as
- 11:15well. Yeah.
- 11:15You probe Season 24 stories, Yeah, And it's a lot.
- 11:19Of the Bannerman's got a genocide at the beginning.
- 11:23I often look at you and consider you incandescent artistry.
- 11:27A lot of people say that about a.
- 11:31Lot of people. No one says it about me.
- 11:32I love Ace's ladder that she carries around.
- 11:35We see it here and in Fenrich. Do we see it anywhere else but?
- 11:39It looked very small at the top and then when it went down it
- 11:41just kept going and going. It's like a Mary Poppins ladder.
- 11:45I just love the fact that's what she does.
- 11:47Ohh, they're saying from the unfolding text.
- 11:49Oh my God. Do you know what I've been
- 11:51saying? This lying to people to ban
- 11:53bills of them for years. What was it?
- 11:55I think you'll find most educated people regarded
- 11:58mythical convictions fundamentally animistic.
- 12:01See. Perfectly quotable.
- 12:04It's that great lines in this and this guy just playing it
- 12:06completely straight. I mean, I don't know who he is,
- 12:08but I mean, I wouldn't surprise me if he was a comedian or
- 12:11something like that. He just plays it perfectly.
- 12:13You remember the first time we podcast it together?
- 12:15I do. I felt like this fella.
- 12:18You've no idea how it is for me to meet such an education.
- 12:25The experience is at the root of all phenomena.
- 12:28He's got like a cockney accent. He's brilliant.
- 12:31He's a bit Alexis sail in a way, although Alexis sails more
- 12:35Liverpod Liam I think. And you sort of probe the ideas.
- 12:38There's some good ideas they're talking about there as well, but
- 12:42it's just like a throwaway gag. I also like the uniforms that
- 12:47they were. I think they're like it's a
- 12:49thought about world. I mean, I know everything's
- 12:51essentially white, but it it makes sense it all.
- 12:54The uniforms are a little bit background in the Star Wars.
- 12:57They're not like the the stormtroopers up front, but when
- 12:59you're on Cloud City in the background or something like.
- 13:02And there's a clear division as well.
- 13:04You see the upper level, the freezer center, and then you see
- 13:07them climbing down to the lower levels and and all the tunnels.
- 13:11You see the dormant trees, You know, as I as I get older.
- 13:15And I wouldn't have thought this when I was 1415, but I suddenly
- 13:18realized what a fantastic bum. Bonnie Langford's gut.
- 13:23You know, I haven't noticed, but I'll keep an eye out for it now
- 13:25you know. Is it a beautiful Peach?
- 13:28Yes, exactly. Fix has got a furry dice.
- 13:32Now that's a great touch. This is so enjoyable.
- 13:37It's a great story. It's a funny story.
- 13:41It's a dark story. It's an entertaining story.
- 13:43It's it's a hoot. This is this, so you know I just
- 13:47adore it because. McCoy doesn't come in and
- 13:51condemn her, he says. I understand, but you're never
- 13:54going to be able to pay back your debt.
- 13:56You sold your soul. You know.
- 13:58Patricia Quinn Medicine Woman's fantastic performance here as.
- 14:02Well, that's what I sold myself for.
- 14:04James Mark you feel like at any point she could burst into me a
- 14:08musical. Yeah, she's very.
- 14:13I mean, I quite like it about this season.
- 14:15You get it with the Kangs as well.
- 14:16Everybody feels a little bit performing arts, and while I can
- 14:20understand the fans at the time being a bit cringed out by it,
- 14:24at the same time I'm like, what a lot of fun.
- 14:26You get less of that in the next season.
- 14:28Yes, yeah, Spawn is so much fun this season 24, and I think
- 14:34that's what people realize when the Blu-ray came out.
- 14:36I think a lot of people have written it off and it to be
- 14:39honest, it still is at the bottom of the pole.
- 14:40Did you see the 7th Doctor pole that came out?
- 14:42Oh no, did it or. Was it all, all of it at the
- 14:44bottom? Yeah.
- 14:47But it is. It's so entertaining, yeah, But
- 14:50I get The thing is, it's not, it's not Doctor Who firing on
- 14:53all cylinders that is has a wide appeal.
- 14:57It's a knee shot of Doctor Who. It's Doctor Who for kids, I
- 15:01think, and it's Doctor Who for camp hold Doctor Who fans.
- 15:04So and I think those two audiences don't have a trouble
- 15:07with it. I think a general audience and I
- 15:10think Doctor Who fans of old had real, real problems with it.
- 15:14So I so I get it. Weird fan wisdom that did
- 15:18formulate in the 90s, didn't there?
- 15:20And was in all those sort of handbooks and being bred into
- 15:23all the new fans as well. If you go on the Ian Lavian
- 15:26Facebook group, you will see that wisdom is breaking up very
- 15:30much alive. I took one look at the beginning
- 15:34of it where it says this is for people that will agree with Ian.
- 15:38I was like, Oh no, I can't join that then a dictatorship if.
- 15:43You. Yeah, yes, yes.
- 15:45Oh, they could have had a singing a Rocky Ora song,
- 15:48couldn't they? In this, you know, what's it?
- 15:50Oh, fantasies dreaming. Was that before this?
- 15:55I think it was, yeah. I think she's cuz she's a bit of
- 15:57a stunt cast, isn't she? But I.
- 15:59Don't think it was a success yet, was it?
- 16:01It became. It was one of those ones that
- 16:03became a success as a video release.
- 16:05I think so. God bless Sylvester McCoy and
- 16:09Tony Selby trying to open that door convincingly, to say it's
- 16:12heavy when it literally just flops around a few seconds.
- 16:14Later but. It's acting, darling.
- 16:17It is acting. You know the thing I like the
- 16:23most about Doctor Who, and it's always done it and continues to
- 16:26do it. Tony Selby's actually a pretty
- 16:29unlikely action hero, isn't it? You said this about River Song,
- 16:33didn't you, when we did Impossible Astronaut?
- 16:35Yeah, they're basically the same.
- 16:37Yeah, yeah. Look at the hair.
- 16:41Yeah. No, Yeah.
- 16:42And that's always nice, isn't it?
- 16:43Yeah. Haydock was saying that about
- 16:45Martha's dad in Sound of Drums. That's interesting about when he
- 16:48goes, you know, No, get out. You know, even though he's in
- 16:51danger, the unlikely hero. Yeah, and who doesn't?
- 16:55We don't do this enough in classic in new Doctor Who.
- 16:58Someone burning through a door slowly up and around.
- 17:01I think they'd learn how to do Sparks.
- 17:03That's quite dramatic. Yeah, I wouldn't have stood that
- 17:05close. Absolutely.
- 17:07Matthew Waterhouse. Remember him in Earthshot when
- 17:09he's playing with that console, knowing that it's going to blow
- 17:12up Waterhouse? Oh my, good.
- 17:15Look at Mill throwing the Nitro and she's getting into it.
- 17:19You. Know she like, if she'd stuck
- 17:21around, she'd be, you know, she's got a lot of pens of
- 17:23progression, I imagine. I do wish those sheets of ice
- 17:27didn't below like that. It works differently to Earth
- 17:32ice, actually. There's just something about
- 17:34Classic Who though I just forgive production.
- 17:37Also, even like the newest bit of Classic who's like 30 years
- 17:40old man. So it's like it doesn't matter.
- 17:43Look at how well shot not that bit where she falls over, but
- 17:46when they go underneath the crazy and it it's shot like them
- 17:50in silhouette with her holding mills mouth and then the person
- 17:53looking down. Just put yourself in the mind of
- 17:55a 5 year old watching it. He'll be really scary.
- 17:58He's, you know, he's thinking about the camera angles.
- 18:01This isn't someone just trying to get it done like.
- 18:05And then Ace's point of view for the stairs, and then there's a
- 18:08wonderful shot from above when you see them underneath there,
- 18:12there you go. And I think already you're
- 18:17behind Ace, you know? And we already love Mel, so
- 18:21that's a properly tense moment. But this you kind of get in
- 18:25this. There was the whole thing of So
- 18:27Chris Clough put out this whole thing that was Ray gonna be the
- 18:31companion or whatever what have you, and he basically just put
- 18:34out the same casting brief for both characters and he wasn't
- 18:36sure which one was gonna stick around.
- 18:38Can you imagine it being Ray, though?
- 18:39No. I work with Ray, but she worked
- 18:42at QVC, the nation's favorite shopping cart.
- 18:44I'm not. Sure, she was lovely, but you
- 18:46know you could never go. No.
- 18:47He was ironized every week. Good job.
- 18:49It was a I mean, if you got a choose between her Welsh accents
- 18:53and Sophie Aldred's, you know, East London accent, I'm glad we
- 18:56got Sophie's in. London accent.
- 18:59I don't think she ever did East London, did she?
- 19:01Whatever part of London she's supposed.
- 19:03To get sounds very posh to me. She's a posh company.
- 19:06Are they posh companies? You live in London?
- 19:08Yeah. I don't think there's any
- 19:09companies left in London. No, it's true.
- 19:13Who lives in there then? Media pricks like me.
- 19:17You're not prick. Media prick.
- 19:23We sold ourselves. We knew what we were doing.
- 19:25We had a I love all this stuff because it just suggests the
- 19:29back story to these characters that we're already going to
- 19:32know. They weren't me doing this in
- 19:33these years. It's the Cult of Kane, you know.
- 19:37It's very subtle, but it is going look how impressionable
- 19:40you are when you're young. Oh, I love conspiracy like this.
- 19:43This is not me at work. How do you propose you do that?
- 19:48You constantly turn the freezer off at work.
- 19:52We will have to go home. Oh dear, I'll see that again.
- 19:59Now, Briggs did say, and that's Ian Briggs, not Nicholas Briggs.
- 20:04He's not here yet. That he wish he hadn't just done
- 20:08this massive back story exposition bit for race.
- 20:12Yeah, but I don't mind. It's going to happen at some
- 20:14point. Also, what I didn't mention
- 20:16about that convention panel, it was of course hosted by Sir
- 20:20Nicholas Briggs. Was a work call asking.
- 20:23All the questions. And you know, because I have
- 20:25been saying some unreasonable things about Nicholas Briggs of
- 20:28late, I will say this. He's a fantastic interviewer.
- 20:32He is absolutely he. He comes out to a personal level
- 20:35with people and he just manages to relax enough to deliver
- 20:39stories that we haven't heard before.
- 20:41He's the only person to get new stuff out.
- 20:44Tom Baker in the last 20 years, pretty much that calling one was
- 20:47great as well. Really good.
- 20:50And as your impressive library behind us, here a test Did he do
- 20:55all these myth makers? No, he stops after about.
- 20:59That number 100. But he pops back for the odd
- 21:01one. You know what it's like.
- 21:03Jesus, you're gonna do anymore. These stupid fucking narratives.
- 21:05I'm trying to do an interview. Stop beaming him off into the
- 21:08woods. They stop doing the narratives
- 21:10after about #40 and then they just become straight talking
- 21:14head interviews again. But what's the most quirky 1?
- 21:17I mean, there's the Mary Tam one where they're trapped in Alice
- 21:20in Wonderland, the Jackie Lane one where she just keeps
- 21:25appearing out of this circle. The Jackie Lane one.
- 21:28There's a huge missed opportunity, but there are also
- 21:30lots of fun ones. The Victor Pemberton One's a
- 21:32particular favorite. I think the J and T1 is great.
- 21:36That's interesting. No?
- 21:37No. Do you know why?
- 21:38It's because there is a sadness to it.
- 21:40You can tell like his career's peaked and he is sad that he's
- 21:44not really doing what he should be doing, but he does bring a
- 21:47lot of insight into stuff. He does, but I just, I mean, I'm
- 21:50still gutted that we never got that that full tell all
- 21:55interview. And that's what he promised for
- 21:58the myth makers and then didn't deliver it.
- 22:00Don't worry, Gary Downey did it for him in Doctor Magazine.
- 22:02Gary Downey's full of shit. It was great.
- 22:07You don't know who was shagging each other.
- 22:08And Doctor Who locations. Oh, they both slipped over
- 22:12there, Bonnie. Oh, OK.
- 22:14All four of them slipped over in this.
- 22:16It's a myth. It's a myth.
- 22:17Chris Kloft's got the note. Yeah, exactly.
- 22:19No one's slipping. There's no place for animosity
- 22:24on a serious scientific undertaking.
- 22:26Now how would you feel about a TARDIS crew that was these 40
- 22:30gold? Glitz Mel. 7th Doctor Ace I
- 22:34could. I could do that.
- 22:35It would work, yeah. So I'm not sure how well it all
- 22:38fit. Remembers the Daleks.
- 22:39So yeah, you know. Now I'm hoping with Mel coming
- 22:42back, that we'll finally see the Doctor Who's been off that.
- 22:48Mark Donaldson upon the time that has been mooting for years,
- 22:51which it's called Son of a Glitz and it stars Danny Dyer as
- 22:57Glitz. Oh my God, that is perfect.
- 23:01Oh yes, please. No, Danny Dyer would be amazing,
- 23:05wouldn't they? Wouldn't they?
- 23:08Or Dad. This is for you all.
- 23:11Credit to Mark Donaldson who came up with this and I like.
- 23:15Rossi Davis, if you're listening, make it so.
- 23:17So have a glitz. I was just trying to think, you
- 23:20know, because obviously ICE has that little romantic dalliance
- 23:23with a Nazi remembrance, so we're going to give more
- 23:25romance. So I guess males going to have
- 23:28to have a dalliance with Gilmore, and Glitz is gonna have
- 23:30to have a dalliance with Rachel Jensen.
- 23:32The luck again. I mean, she's Glitz is already
- 23:34have an asylum. Glitz has already taken aces
- 23:37virginity according to the book at this point, hasn't it?
- 23:41Oh yeah, what was that all about?
- 23:43And then the New Adventures really lent into that.
- 23:45They referenced it a couple of times.
- 23:47Yeah, and she's supposed to be 16 in this look.
- 23:49I don't think it mentions it in the target book though, does it?
- 23:52Probably not the target book, but they do.
- 23:55Yeah. Well, of course, yeah.
- 23:58Of course, it's the mid 90s by the end, isn't it?
- 24:01You know, I know horny school boys are writing the books.
- 24:03The Doctor Who? Yeah.
- 24:04And I thought Tony Selby was exactly the sort of person that
- 24:07should take the cases. Virginia, I mean, I mean, Mel
- 24:10goes off with him, but. The rules are different in
- 24:12space. Maybe.
- 24:13Maybe that's it. Everyone's always said why on
- 24:15earth does Mel go off and glitz? Maybe ice when I am much of A
- 24:18looker, but he's that fucking great shag.
- 24:21She's like, oh it's been a while.
- 24:26Alright, I'll do it. Look at the special effects shot
- 24:29where Can kills him now It's the same thing they did in Pyramids
- 24:32of Mars episode one sort of dry ice in the hands.
- 24:36But it's brilliant like. I mean, it works.
- 24:38It works then it'd work now as well.
- 24:40The performance really sells it as well, doesn't it?
- 24:43I think the statue's been improved some more, isn't it?
- 24:46Looks like one of those ones from the Temple of what's it
- 24:49called in Time of Angels. The Temple of Atropos.
- 24:54That you know I did. I've asked that question a few
- 24:56times. It was desecrated.
- 24:58My monument. Sorry, I can't.
- 25:03Please change the subject. Edward Pale is fantastic here.
- 25:08I mean, again, you sort of look at linking themes.
- 25:11He's sort of a vampire here, isn't it?
- 25:14And you know, cursive Frederick is very much based on sort of
- 25:18vampiric legend and Bram Stoker's.
- 25:22Myth. In fact, in the novel of of
- 25:25Curse of Fenrich, there is a passage written by Mr. Abraham
- 25:30Stoker, who was inspired by the events of The Curse of Fenrich
- 25:36to write his book. Now we've got a bit of back
- 25:41story being pumped in here by, I mean.
- 25:44They must have heard of televisions or video players or
- 25:47something by this Quite nice. It's a bit like Princess Leia in
- 25:50Star Wars. True.
- 25:51Now one of the things, one of the criticisms level that This
- 25:54is why imprison someone on a planet with their means to
- 25:58escape. But I think isn't that worse.
- 26:02But they've got to spend all 10,000 years and like, you know,
- 26:07it's not exactly hard when they do take down the dragon.
- 26:09No, it's all sort of down an afternoon really.
- 26:12And he could have basically done the whole thing now and looked
- 26:14at one star map and going, oh, I might as well not go right stock
- 26:19up on fish fingers. You know you need glitz in the
- 26:21doctor there to sort it all out. Look at the the pipes on the
- 26:24back of that set. All of it.
- 26:27He does the same thing is now I think it's probably cardboard.
- 26:30It does the same thing with the candy kitchen in Happiness
- 26:34Patrol, this scene where he makes Bellage think that he's
- 26:39gonna let her go. You know, she's a traitor.
- 26:43But at the I remember the first time I watched the bit where he
- 26:46jumps on it, I really jumped out.
- 26:48I say it was a great man and. The face he makes as well, yeah,
- 26:51he's just utterly ruthless. It's not bears his teeth,
- 26:54doesn't he? William Hartley used to, yeah.
- 26:56It's again, it's sort of vampiric.
- 27:00Ice vampires, but but but vampiric nonetheless.
- 27:04There's a story in that, you know, ice vampires.
- 27:06There you go. Pitch it now.
- 27:07There she is. Oh, well, no, I did hear a
- 27:11rumor, you know, that you had joined the Kynexana gang.
- 27:16Is it true? Yes.
- 27:17Yes, I am. Actually, I'm a big fan.
- 27:19That's how you've managed to afford all these fabulous myth
- 27:21makers think. But I'll stop going on about.
- 27:24This I've sold myself. I find that like you did, yeah,
- 27:29no, they're very good. But this is this is all
- 27:33exposition here, isn't it? We did a little bit in the
- 27:36middle before we. Head towards the big finale.
- 27:40Do you think the three parts worked?
- 27:42Yes, I think fundamentally if we look at new Who and stuff like
- 27:48that, the 245 minutes work, the 325 minutes work, I think it's
- 27:53something the Doctor Who should have tried a long time before
- 27:56because it is, I think it's just you've got your three act
- 27:59structure. I know it's not quite as simple
- 28:01as that, but it just saves on a lot of padding.
- 28:04I think the problem is with this era, that they often have too
- 28:10much plot for those three episodes.
- 28:12And you know, they they absolutely butchered those
- 28:14season 26 stories, didn't they? Which is why we've had, you
- 28:17know, 5 special editions of each story come.
- 28:19Out. This is an extended version of
- 28:21it on the DVD, isn't there? They say.
- 28:23Yeah, I've seen it. Every story on the season 24 has
- 28:28an extended version that's not in ah fully I I I watched some
- 28:32of the others and I can't really watch that.
- 28:35You know, the sort of location for two Genoa that.
- 28:37Sometimes if I'm sat in here working I'll put it on for a
- 28:40bit, but I've never got through it all.
- 28:41I joked that when this came out and it was like 26 hours worth
- 28:45of education forage, we should live stream it all for charity.
- 28:51Really bored. The best.
- 28:52The best thing in all of that though is when Bill already scan
- 28:557 hours I've been here. It's not all this in the movies.
- 28:59Did you notice the Kate? Did you notice you've seen this
- 29:0250 times? Kane had the rarest of things.
- 29:06A villain talking directly to camera.
- 29:07Yes, I will give you 10 points if you named to me two other
- 29:12occasions. Where that's happened, Professor
- 29:17Zarath, that's definitely one. And there's a 5th Doctor story.
- 29:24Look, your brother was sitting here right now.
- 29:26Oh, you got it. You got it.
- 29:30It's there in the back of your mind.
- 29:31You know, you just got to sift through, you know all the
- 29:33different things. It's rack, isn't it?
- 29:36At the end of SA Three laughing, a red dog does.
- 29:38Davros do it in. This stole the Earth or
- 29:41Journey's End. Oh God, I remember he.
- 29:44No, he does have one in Resurrection of the Daleks.
- 29:46You know, when they cut the 45 down to 25 and one of his rants
- 29:51is a Cliff. Why Daleks?
- 29:52Well back. Um, that's a Rain Man.
- 29:54That's the Rams. Hold that off.
- 29:56Oh, they're my office. So aren't they they?
- 29:58Are so we've done two episodes. I know.
- 30:01Well, we better go and watch Episode 3 then, aren't we?
- 30:03And you've promised, rather enticingly, another fact in Part
- 30:093. I have, I have, and I will hit
- 30:11you with it. Everyone's got two days to wait
- 30:13for that, you know. I think it's worth it.
- 30:14Come back and we'll be back in two days.
- 30:17Slash back 30 seconds. I've only got a few seconds,
- 30:20yeah.
