- 1:19Tell us what you thought of the movies that were watching.
- 1:23Exactly. You know you can be a part, be a
- 1:25part of this. I'm watching with us.
- 1:28That's right. We had the whole gang in there
- 1:31watching this and you could be part of that.
- 1:33Yes, it's a blast. Everyone actually enjoyed this
- 1:36movie. This week was my pick and this
- 1:41week I picked Ichi the Killer. Ichi the Killer is a Japanese
- 1:46manga that was turned into a film by Takashi Mikkei.
- 1:52It's a crime horror gang yakuza flick that is just balls to the
- 2:00wall. Like if you read manga or if you
- 2:03watch anime. This is literally that on
- 2:06screen. It is absurdity, it is brutal,
- 2:09it is hypersexual in some of the most wrong ways possible, but it
- 2:16all adds to the story. Without giving too much away
- 2:19here, this film was released in 2001 and then subsequently re
- 2:24released multiple times in, you know, upscaled formats and what
- 2:29have you. I own 3 copies of this film on
- 2:32DVD. Really.
- 2:34Yeah. I love this movie.
- 2:37I love this movie. Which what?
- 2:38What do you have? What copies do you have?
- 2:40I'd have to go look. I haven't like checked my DVDs
- 2:43in quite a while, but I, I know I have 3 because I'd go to like
- 2:46disc replay and be like, oh, here's this version or here's
- 2:48that. There's like a collector's
- 2:49version, I think there's just standard format, and then
- 2:53there's like like an updated format.
- 2:58I think I have one of the Japanese DVDs that could only be
- 3:01played in a Japanese DVD player. Oh, really?
- 3:05It's like region locked or some shit.
- 3:06I have to look. I'll I'll get pictures though.
- 3:09This movie is a movie that I first saw.
- 3:15Fuck dude, I couldn't have been more than thirteen years old
- 3:19when I first saw this film. 13 and 14, and it's because I was a
- 3:25bored teenager who just didn't go to high school and would just
- 3:31watch movies. That's what I did.
- 3:33I watched the movies, listen to music and played video games.
- 3:36How did you how did you stumble into this though?
- 3:39Was it another rental or another one from Big Ed's shelf?
- 3:45Big Ed was definitely one of the people that I've seen watch
- 3:50these types of movies, so I kind of was getting curious there.
- 3:54But Ichi the Killer, oddly enough, was a movie that I
- 3:58downloaded on Limewire. Wow.
- 4:02Yeah, so I downloaded this film before.
- 4:03My time, I think. I was just, I don't even think I
- 4:07was trying to find this movie out because back when I was that
- 4:10young, YouTube wasn't really like this at all where you could
- 4:13just type in top 10 best Japanese horror movies.
- 4:17Like you had to like dig and go through like forums and like it
- 4:21was just before Reddit and shit really.
- 4:24Dedicated horror forms. The before time.
- 4:27The long, long ago. Yeah, the long spooky ghost.
- 4:32I probably honestly also learned about this in Fangoria because I
- 4:37read the magazine since I was that young.
- 4:40Like I've always, you know, gone to Barnes and Noble with my
- 4:43grandma and pick up a issue of Fangoria.
- 4:45She didn't know she was getting me.
- 4:47She didn't really fucking even care what she was getting me at
- 4:49that point. But that's how I stumbled upon
- 4:53Ichi the Killer. And upon my first watch, I
- 4:55immediately wanted to get the manga once I looked up like what
- 4:58this actually is. You can now easily get the manga
- 5:02on Amazon. You can get the three books that
- 5:05are on Amazon. And yeah, Ichi the Killer is one
- 5:09of those movies I've never, ever forgotten and I've always
- 5:12watched at least once a year. And I love this fucking film.
- 5:15What did you guys think, Noah? Let's start with Noah because
- 5:18this is Noah's first time seeing Ichi the Killer.
- 5:23Yeah, it was. It was interesting when it
- 5:27started out, it kind of felt more just like a normal sort of
- 5:32like crime, gang action horror kind of thing.
- 5:37But the more more like I let it play out, the more and more it
- 5:41it, it watches like like an anime, like the way that the
- 5:47music lingers in the background, even like the type of music that
- 5:52you're hearing is very much anime inspired.
- 5:55Like if you if you close your eyes, you might think that you
- 5:59were, that's what you're watching that there's some
- 6:03insane effects in this. There's some really good
- 6:06effects. There's some maybe not so good
- 6:08effects, but we had a good time all enjoying those effects if
- 6:13the good ones and the not so good ones.
- 6:17It's kind of odd because usually a movie like this, you feel like
- 6:21it's going to commit to doing everything practically or doing
- 6:25everything digitally. But there's a pretty healthy mix
- 6:27of the two in this, and I think they're blended pretty well.
- 6:33The story is very interesting. There's a lot of stuff with the
- 6:37characters that I definitely want to get into some theories
- 6:40about, you know, what is going on with these characters.
- 6:46And it seems to be that it's a lot of it is based on maybe
- 6:50things that happened to them in the past.
- 6:53And there's a lot of like psychological aspects to it and
- 6:56sort of motivations that are one way.
- 7:00But then they they sort of flip and there's a little game of cat
- 7:05and mouse going on where it seems like there's multiple
- 7:07gangs all encountering these same problems.
- 7:11And then eventually, finally it brings them together and you get
- 7:14this big kind of like every like everything that you've seen
- 7:19comes together and there's a very satisfying conclusion.
- 7:23And it's still feels left open-ended with the ending.
- 7:28Like there could be more of this.
- 7:29I don't. Did they make?
- 7:31Was there a sequel for this? No, it was a one and done.
- 7:34It was a one and done I believe. Have you have you read the the
- 7:38manga that's based off of? I have not read the manga and I
- 7:42believe there is also an anime and I think it was like a one
- 7:46shot. If if I'm thinking correctly, I
- 7:48believe it was like like a like a one time thing or like a
- 7:52here's here's the movie episode thing that they did they would
- 7:55do for it. But I've not read the manga.
- 8:00I've always wanted it. But my my biggest thing is I
- 8:04like to collect things in like hardcover.
- 8:08Yeah, and manga does not really ever come in hardcover.
- 8:12Well they do in collector's editions and I don't know if
- 8:14there's a bus or omnibuses, but like I don't know if that exists
- 8:20for this and I may need to look deeper into it.
- 8:22I'm sure it does. There is a collector's edition
- 8:24type thing where it's like the shell, because Ichi's suit is
- 8:28very interesting. It's like a turtle, Like he's
- 8:31like a turtle almost like he's, you know, I mean, it's very
- 8:35funny how that works and plays out.
- 8:37But we will get more into all of those specificities in a moment.
- 8:44Mr. Alex, I know you've seen this fucking movie.
- 8:48I think this is like my third time.
- 8:50It hasn't been many times. OK, it's so crazy to me because
- 8:53I feel like somewhat of an outsider because we watch these
- 8:56movies and I'm like, how could anybody have ever heard of this?
- 9:00Like I just, it's such a, it's such a fascinating thing.
- 9:03That's why I always want to ask you guys, like if you've seen
- 9:05it, how like how did you find this?
- 9:08Like how did you stumble onto this?
- 9:11Word of mouth again. Internet.
- 9:16Fangoria magazine's forms. I mean when you become like a
- 9:20dumb whore nerd you go looking for the most fucked up shit you
- 9:25can find because you become desensitized to everything.
- 9:29Yeah, this movie's definitely like, brutal.
- 9:34But honestly, given some of the other things we've covered on
- 9:38this on this show before it, it seemed kind of like, I think the
- 9:44fact that you had that heightened sense of reality,
- 9:48like where there is somewhat of a fantasy like element to this,
- 9:52where there is just wacky, unexplainable things.
- 9:55It's sort of softens the real world stuff.
- 9:59But they're tackling some heavy, like psychological issues in
- 10:04this movie. They This movie tackles rape, it
- 10:10tackles sadomasochism, it tackles BDSM, it tackles the
- 10:17yakuza, which like the aquisa, which like I am not touching
- 10:21with a 10 foot pole. That's not my business, but
- 10:25it's. Quite it's on stuff like PTSD.
- 10:28PTSD. Trauma.
- 10:31Yeah, with being how? How like yeah is is.
- 10:36I that it's interesting, that's some autism.
- 10:39There, right? Yeah.
- 10:41I think what it is, yeah, I think what it is is that he
- 10:46suffered trauma as a kid and it warped his sense of reality
- 10:52later on. And maybe there's like, my
- 10:55theory would be that you have spoilers.
- 11:00I guess we'll. Yeah, we're.
- 11:02In 2001, dude. Yeah, well, you know, these
- 11:06things are obscure and not maybe more people than I think, but
- 11:09not a lot of people would have maybe seen this.
- 11:11But my theory is that he's some, he's some kind of neurodivergent
- 11:19type, right? Something's going on upstairs
- 11:23that he is. Yeah, something like that.
- 11:27He clearly he does not process things normally because he's got
- 11:32like split personalities. Yes.
- 11:36And it's, it was really interesting.
- 11:37I was like, Oh my God, like they're getting they like
- 11:39they're getting into the psychology of what potential
- 11:43trauma as a kid and not even having something happen to you,
- 11:46but just something that he saw changed the way his brain, like
- 11:52the way he understood certain social cues.
- 11:56So it is something that Ichi did see, but what what we are
- 12:00showing throughout the movie with the rape is not something
- 12:03Ichi was there for. That was fed into Ichi's brain
- 12:09to hypnotize him to just do Gigi's shit.
- 12:14Ichi killed his parents and then in his brain, from what I'm,
- 12:19from what I remember, I know we just watched it, but I'm there's
- 12:22a lot where I was able to just get up and go get a glass of
- 12:24water cause I've seen it. Yeah, I believe Ichi kills his
- 12:28parents and that's what pretty much like fucking starts to tick
- 12:32in the brain, right? Like that is one of the
- 12:34traumatic things. But the rape never truly he's
- 12:38never a part of. Really.
- 12:41Like there's a there's a whole like Gigi is like a hypnotist
- 12:44almost type thing. Or he's like feeding this like
- 12:47false narrative into the mind of those that he can.
- 12:50Like he literally says like I am literally controlling all of
- 12:53you. Like you are doing this because
- 12:55of me, which is also psychological right there too.
- 12:59So yeah, no, I think I but I do think, like, given the traumas
- 13:03that are explored in this, whether it be sexual, whether it
- 13:05be violence, whether it be parental, like there are a lot
- 13:09of those like things where it's like, yeah, that that can warp
- 13:11your mind and then you don't get to be you.
- 13:13I mean, fuck, dude. The first time you really see
- 13:16Ichi, he is masturbating while a woman's being beaten.
- 13:20And that is the title card of the movie.
- 13:22It's his come. And it's like boom Ichi.
- 13:26But like, that is the tone of the film though.
- 13:29It's literally the tone of the movie.
- 13:31Yeah, it's the whole thing. It's like this guy witnessed
- 13:36like a sexual assault and it warped his brain of what that
- 13:40is. And that's like a real thing.
- 13:41Like real. Like even big celebrities like
- 13:45have talked about that. And like, I mean, this is it's
- 13:49more of a new age thing. But like growing up on on the
- 13:52Internet, you see things in it, you know, when you're young and
- 13:55it changes the way that you think about stuff.
- 13:59So it's interesting that they were able to really work that
- 14:01into what is otherwise like a gang crime movie.
- 14:08Yeah, 'cause when you look at it through that lens, like there is
- 14:10horror elements, but it's definitely more of like AI don't
- 14:15even know what you would. Would you really call it like an
- 14:17action thriller kind? Of it's like a psychological
- 14:19violent actions, the suspense with a bit of horror because
- 14:23like there's a whole we are afraid of Ichi.
- 14:28Like, everyone, well, the whole time, the boogie the whole time,
- 14:31yeah, there's this, this, this crime syndicate.
- 14:34And they're like, they're coming across all these, like,
- 14:37horrifying scenes, like something gruesome happened.
- 14:41And then like they it seems like the whole time they know that
- 14:45someone called Ichi is doing it, but they have no idea who that
- 14:49could be. So I think the cleanup crew's
- 14:51Gigi's boys, if I'm not mistaken, I'd have to, I'd have
- 14:55to go through the synopsis all over again.
- 14:57I'd really have to go through it.
- 14:59But yeah, there's like a whole clean up crew that goes to the
- 15:01the scene and they're like, man, Ichi just went crazy today.
- 15:05Like God damn, he's inhuman, right?
- 15:06Like they're all, they're just like, so like, dude, like our
- 15:09job sucks tonight because of Ichi.
- 15:14And it's, it's, it's really crazy to see like the, the cat
- 15:16and mouse thing between Ichi and Kaki Kakihara is so interesting
- 15:21to me because all Kakihara wants ultimately is to be beaten.
- 15:28He like he wants to die. The dude is a sadomasochist.
- 15:32He wants to be hurt and he wants to die.
- 15:34And no one can give him that. That's why he's in search.
- 15:36Like it it starts out with the search for his boss, but then it
- 15:41very quickly is like no, I want if he could do this, I want him
- 15:46to do this to me. Yeah.
- 15:49And it's, it's, it's such an awesome duality of characters.
- 15:52Ichi's just like, I don't want to do this.
- 15:55Yes, I do want to do this. I don't want to do this.
- 15:57And then presented it to his face.
- 15:59You know, like there's that scene there on the film where
- 16:03he's just like, so you're telling me you don't want this,
- 16:06but you do want this. So that means you think you
- 16:10don't want me, but you do want me to.
- 16:12And there's that whole, like, inner monologue that he's saying
- 16:15out loud and she's like, what the fuck is happening?
- 16:18He's like, wait a minute. Yeah, I this.
- 16:20Sucks. Actually, I don't I've I've made
- 16:23a miscalculation here. I mean, dude, it's it's right
- 16:26there in front of us too during the abuse scene.
- 16:29The second time that woman is being abused by that man.
- 16:34There's a lot more you figure out about this woman there
- 16:36though, too. And you're like, oh, that's
- 16:38fucking weird. And then he go, he busts in the
- 16:42dude's picking on him because he's again, the bullying is also
- 16:45a big thing theme of this movie. And boom fucking kills him.
- 16:49And then he just boom. Just kills.
- 16:52How does he kill him? How does he kill him, Nick?
- 16:55Oh, he kills that motherfucker. Talk about that for a second.
- 16:57In half see. He unseemed him.
- 17:00Yes, it was very fun. It's a very fun kill.
- 17:05My problem with it is this not really a problem.
- 17:07I this was made in the day where CGI was finally like we can make
- 17:11things with computers, like we could just do that.
- 17:15I mean, it was, I mean, it was kind of further along, but like
- 17:18that type of CGI where it's like, all right, we it's.
- 17:21Like hopped into a real. Yeah.
- 17:23You know, you know, you know, it's like, all right, here we
- 17:26are. It's it's it's bad CGI.
- 17:30It's not good CGI. You could, you know, it stands
- 17:33out. But given the film it is given
- 17:37the context, given what this is, it works.
- 17:40You, you laugh and you're like, God, that's an awesome kill.
- 17:43It's never wow, that was shit. It was it, Everybody is like,
- 17:46that's goofy, but that was a good kill.
- 17:49You know what I mean? So it it plays, it knows its
- 17:53strengths and it plays on them very strongly, especially with
- 17:58the CGI mixed with the practical effects, because when the
- 18:01practical kills come in, you're like, oh, that's and they saved
- 18:05a lot of like the practical effects for the gnarlier shit.
- 18:08But they really do here, which let's talk about that.
- 18:14Let's talk about Kakihara or Kakihara.
- 18:18Yeah, he's. Man, what a Batty.
- 18:20They kick him out of the out of the crime syndicate because he's
- 18:23too violent. He's literally too violent.
- 18:27They're like, this is not how we're like when they're
- 18:29torturing a guy, they do the they're like suspending him with
- 18:33big hooks in his back and he's like poking these like giant
- 18:40pins that he carries around through his face.
- 18:43And the the crime bosses come in.
- 18:44They're like, what are you doing?
- 18:46Like this is This is insane. Yeah, well, it gets worse from
- 18:51there though, Alex. What doesn't it get worse from
- 18:56there? I mean, yeah.
- 19:00Yeah. You fucking the the burning oil
- 19:06on the back? Yeah, it's while being
- 19:08suspended. I don't know.
- 19:09I don't know what would be worse, the burning oil or the
- 19:11needle through the bottom of the fucking throat or the jaw.
- 19:15I. I think, honestly, I think the
- 19:17oil would be worse, yeah. I I think the needle through the
- 19:20bottom is a come and go thing. Once that needle's removed,
- 19:22yeah, it's going to suck, but it's just like a piercing.
- 19:25Yeah, yeah, no, yeah, no 3°. Burn, yeah.
- 19:27I mean, usually you don't get a piercing in the bottom of your
- 19:30chin. Though, right?
- 19:31But once it's out, it's like the pressure of that needle's
- 19:34probably gone. Yeah.
- 19:35Yeah, but like it's. It's like a small pin, yeah.
- 19:38That burning oil is sticking. Oh yeah, and it's peeling as it
- 19:42sticks. And it's like it's, it's like
- 19:47vegetable oil. Yeah, so he's making shrimp.
- 19:50Yeah, he was making. A little tempura.
- 19:53You know, but like, even that shit like that, see that?
- 19:56That's not CGI. That was all practical from what
- 19:58we can tell. And it's like, Oh my God, how
- 20:00the fuck in 2001 did you get away with that?
- 20:05Like how did you do that? Made that one.
- 20:08A lot, a lot, a lot of Latex. That effect reminded me of in.
- 20:12I think it's terrifier too with the bleach.
- 20:17Oh yeah. Just like that.
- 20:19It's just like the, the, it's, it's one of the most brutal
- 20:24things that like, you can even imagine.
- 20:28Yeah, yeah, just the, the, the like, the idea, 'cause
- 20:31everybody's been there. We've all accidentally touched
- 20:34water that's too hot. Like if you're boiling water and
- 20:37then some of it splashes out and touches you, it fucking sucks.
- 20:42And like when you you, you know that feeling, you know, like you
- 20:46can relate to that. And then imagining it being like
- 20:49poured all over you is is like a whole other.
- 20:51Thing I've I've actually had boiling water poured on my back
- 20:56as a kid. Yeah, yeah, I've gotten I, I
- 20:59when I used to work at the grocery store, I, I got like a
- 21:04hot oil from the deep fryer. It.
- 21:06Feels worse. And just like a tiny little bit
- 21:10of it. And like I tell you, I was out
- 21:12for the day. I was like, I'm going home.
- 21:14Yeah. But it's oil sticks on like
- 21:16water. Yeah.
- 21:18It's what I'm saying. Just brutal.
- 21:20There's so much oil would be worse.
- 21:22I think, I think their best effects are the practical ones
- 21:26that happen like that are slow and subtle, like all the big
- 21:31actions like the throat explosions and stuff are all
- 21:33like, they're good, like practical effects.
- 21:35But I think the best ones are the things like the the burning
- 21:40oil. Like you can see the guy's hair,
- 21:42like, falling out where the oil is.
- 21:45Yeah. And like when he's like slowly
- 21:49pushing the pin through the guy, it's just, it's brutal.
- 21:54And it's Kakihara's tongue. Scene Yeah yeah, he what again?
- 21:59Maybe explain to me again why he did that?
- 22:01Because I. That was penance for his
- 22:03actions. So like they were like, dude,
- 22:06you like you're too fucking far. You're bullshit.
- 22:08Like you're out and he's like, OK, time out.
- 22:12I will. He's like alternatively.
- 22:15Alternatively, I'll give you something of mine then fine,
- 22:17fine eye for an eye. So he goes, I would rather not
- 22:20taste anything or something along those lines.
- 22:22Like I'll give you something like whatever a taste of it cuts
- 22:25his tongue out and goes, here you go.
- 22:26There's my flesh. Give it to him pound for pound.
- 22:30But like, that is not a measured.
- 22:32Like it's, it's, it's not measured.
- 22:34Kakihara's being a smart ass. He he should have just left.
- 22:37He should have just been like, OK, I'm leaving now.
- 22:39I think the biggest thing was the point he's making is I don't
- 22:42care. Like that was Kakihara.
- 22:45He was like, I don't care. Like here, yeah, it hurts.
- 22:48Here you go. And it's.
- 22:49Really. Kind of, Yeah.
- 22:51Well, I kind of think there may be some kind of supernatural
- 22:56element to Kakihara. I don't know if there is or
- 22:59isn't. The way I was looking at is like
- 23:02this guy like like an anime. The world seems very real, but
- 23:08then there's this one like wacky element, like maybe sit, like
- 23:12maybe somebody just has a big unhinging Pennywise mouth.
- 23:15Well. You know, like Kakihara.
- 23:18Like Kakihara does, or he is clearly less vulnerable to pain.
- 23:23Like when he's being like beaten up, he doesn't seem to react.
- 23:27No, because he wants. He invites the pain in.
- 23:30And the thing with Kakihara is you can see that he's like a top
- 23:33dog in these syndicates, but that he's done some of the worst
- 23:38shit because he does have the Chelsea Grin.
- 23:40He does have the scars. So that's more penance that he's
- 23:43given upon himself. The Chelsea Grin.
- 23:46He either, I don't remember if he did does that or if that gets
- 23:49done to him. There's just a lot there.
- 23:53There's a lot to unpack. I mean, dude, it's like a the
- 23:56coolest shit is not knowing because a, it is a different
- 23:59culture, right? So you don't know exactly how,
- 24:02like, us as Americans don't exactly know how these things
- 24:05are actually played out because there seems to be a bit of
- 24:07reality here as well. You know, with all of the
- 24:14cartoonish themes and things of that nature, there is like a
- 24:19real vibe here. So yeah, I know each of the
- 24:23killer is one of those movies, man.
- 24:25You talk about the end for a second before.
- 24:27We run. Absolutely.
- 24:28Yeah, go. For it, what did you guys think
- 24:30of the ending? I was.
- 24:33Oh, like that the whole last ending.
- 24:34All right, Yeah. Sorry, no.
- 24:39What? What?
- 24:42Did you think of it? I've always enjoyed that ending.
- 24:47What that what it what it does is really subvert your
- 24:50expectations because you're expecting this giant for like
- 24:53action filled brawl like you. That is like the end.
- 24:58That is the anticipation this movie builds.
- 25:00It's like, OK, Kaki hara versus Ichi.
- 25:04You're like, all right, cool. You get fuck all of that.
- 25:08And I loved it. I loved it.
- 25:10Not only that, it's all the shit that happens prior to, but I'm
- 25:12talking about the rooftop scene. I love that shit.
- 25:16You know, we won't give too. Like I don't want to give too
- 25:20much away here because like, if you haven't seen Ichi the
- 25:23killer, you should go see it. But the that blatant, we aren't
- 25:30going to give you what you want. And this is what is happening.
- 25:34I loved it. And like where is Ichi now?
- 25:37Right, 'cause at the end of the movie, like, all you see is
- 25:40like, you know, in the crowd there is that guy.
- 25:43And it's like, I, I, I still to this day, I haven't looked up
- 25:47who that was because it's not Ichi.
- 25:49It's to my knowledge it's not Ichi.
- 25:51It's not. I think I thought it was.
- 25:53Didn't look like them, didn't look like Ichi.
- 25:55Unless, unless this is, you know, I was going to say unless
- 25:58it's like a flash word, but it's not because Gigi's hanging in
- 26:01the tree. So which is like spoiler
- 26:06whatever, go see the movie. I won't ruin certain things
- 26:09though. Yeah, I mean, I don't know what
- 26:11you think, Alex. It's like, like Nick said, it's
- 26:16like they build you up. Just put it this way.
- 26:20They edge you the entire fucking movie and then a big old fuck
- 26:26you the the ending is very good. Yeah.
- 26:32Something heinous happens, which doesn't happen in a lot of
- 26:34movies. I'm not going to say what
- 26:36happens. They don't show it, but it's
- 26:41implied. You know?
- 26:41What the fuck happened? Yeah.
- 26:46And just I do, I do want to see the fight.
- 26:50I do. I do want to see it.
- 26:52Yeah. And we'll never.
- 26:53We never will ever. Which hurts a little bit, but.
- 26:58There's no way this film ever gets remade.
- 27:01No, No fucking way. And I I, I think they.
- 27:04Should never want it. I would never want it, just like
- 27:07how I would never want a Sleepaway Camp remake.
- 27:10Unless we're not talking about that.
- 27:12Unless Takashi Mikkei stood up and went.
- 27:16I have more to say. Yeah.
- 27:19That is. If he wanted to make a follow
- 27:21up, that would be OK, but I wouldn't want this to be made.
- 27:24I think it's so interesting in the end.
- 27:27I think the topics that they're tackling would not work today.
- 27:31Like you, it just it just wouldn't fly.
- 27:33But my thought on the ending is it's kind of open-ended.
- 27:38And it's like, you know, it's, it's kind of a thing that you,
- 27:42we've seen before where someone is like consumed by this idea
- 27:47and like maybe that warped their perspective on how even a thing
- 27:53happened right then and there. And you get a lot of that, like
- 27:58what you were saying, like subverting your expectation of
- 28:01what's going to happen. And I think this like it the way
- 28:05it ends, it kind of leaves more questions.
- 28:09And I'm I'm pretty sure that's Ichi in the crowd.
- 28:14Or if it's not, it's maybe it's supposed to be or.
- 28:17But it doesn't look like him. Or maybe like, if it's not,
- 28:21maybe that kid, yeah, maybe that kid is witnessing the event
- 28:25that's going to turn him into the next Ichi.
- 28:28That's why I have a feeling that's why they had the kid
- 28:30around, because now the kid, and I think Ichi knows that because
- 28:33when he sees that the kid saw everything, he like, freaks out
- 28:38and breaks down. But the yeah.
- 28:43Well, what happened on the rooftop there?
- 28:46There is no there is no kid now, though.
- 28:49Yeah. So it's unless like that.
- 28:54Was a lot. Of.
- 28:56It's it's sort of unclear, but I I think it works that way.
- 29:00But did that all actually happen too?
- 29:02Yeah. That we don't, we don't know.
- 29:04That's that's the thing. That's.
- 29:05What you don't have to believe, Yes.
- 29:07Because the mark is gone. When was it?
- 29:10Gigi finds him at the ground. The mark is gone on his head.
- 29:14Yeah, well, he took. Kakihara does say the human body
- 29:19has a way of reviving itself. Yeah, but not that fast.
- 29:23No, but unless. Kakarot, Wolverine.
- 29:26Because they also quickly go to shots of Kakihara in that room
- 29:31he's in just sitting in that little, you know, looks like
- 29:35like bathhouse thing. And he's just sitting there.
- 29:38So like, I mean, does does Gigi realize that Kakihara's not
- 29:43dead? Can he not die?
- 29:44There's a lot. And I'm sure, honestly, I'm sure
- 29:47there is. I'm sure there's explanations.
- 29:50And we sound like idiots. I would love to see the.
- 29:53Manga, honestly. Does huh?
- 29:56Yeah, it's all I guarantee. I guarantee it's all the manga.
- 30:00Yeah. So the manga has.
- 30:03There are 10. There are 10 issues of this.
- 30:08Are those 10 issues this story the same story?
- 30:13I don't. I.
- 30:15I know Kakihara's in it because Kakihara is the cover of issue 3
- 30:20or or book 3. West beyond@gmail.com.
- 30:24Yeah, dude, you guys please let us know because there's so much
- 30:27here. There's just there's a lot here
- 30:29that I would love to dive into with Ichi the killer.
- 30:32Like we don't have to be done talk because there's we barely
- 30:34touch the surface like of this movie.
- 30:37But I I would hope that our like, if you stuck around and
- 30:40you haven't watched, I think you would still, you would still
- 30:43enjoy it. It's bit rough at times, but if
- 30:47you're into these horror movies, I think it's nothing that you're
- 30:49not prepared for. But it's definitely a good
- 30:52watch. It's really interesting
- 30:55psychological stuff that they tackle, like what's real?
- 30:58What what is your perception of something?
- 31:02Really good effects, really good time.
- 31:04Yeah, no. Ichi the Killer is one of those
- 31:07movies I'll never forget watching when I was a teenager.
- 31:09I've watched it, like I said, every year since then, my wife
- 31:15has watched this film with me. She didn't like it, but she
- 31:18watched it. It's it's a good fun time and
- 31:22you could tell that it was a good fun time because people in
- 31:25the discord who were watching us prepare for this episode.
- 31:30We're having a good time with this movie as well.
- 31:32It was like 9 of us. Everyone stuck around.
- 31:36Yeah. And hardly said anything.
- 31:38I mean, a couple times there's some banter, but that happens.
- 31:40But most of the time, people actually just watched it.
- 31:44They just watched it and it was awesome to see people who I know
- 31:48were sitting there going, what the fuck?
- 31:51Like Evan was like, God damn, this movie is fucked.
- 31:55But like he enjoyed it. He said it was a good movie
- 31:57right before we started recording.
- 31:58So oh, man. All right, let's give it our
- 32:02let's give it our stars here, boys.
- 32:04Let's start with again, Noah. It's your first time seeing it.
- 32:06What do you give this film? I gave a nine out of 10.
- 32:09It was awesome. We do fives buddy.
- 32:12Oh, what we're doing fives? We've been doing this time.
- 32:16Let's go. We've been doing it the whole
- 32:17time and I forgot. All right.
- 32:19Yeah. 4 Four out of five, then. Very good.
- 32:22I like that. I like that.
- 32:23Yeah, I just had total brain fart and I just immediately went
- 32:26for 9 out of 10 go. But no, I get 4 out of five.
- 32:29It was it was it was really, really good.
- 32:31I had a really good time. I think there was some
- 32:34information that I missed because it is subtitled.
- 32:38There's no English version of it, although there is some
- 32:42English in it. But I but this is a lot going
- 32:46on. Really interesting, really
- 32:48interesting topics, really well acted, really great effects.
- 32:55Yeah, 4 out of five. Really good.
- 32:58Fuck yeah, Mr. Alex. I'll give it a three out of
- 33:03five. Damn.
- 33:05Three out of five. It's, it's a good flick.
- 33:09I just, it's, I don't know, it's it drags on too much.
- 33:14For me. But it is a good flick.
- 33:18The acting is really good, especially for the time period.
- 33:25Other than that, like I don't really know.
- 33:28It's if you could watch Dead Girl, you can.
- 33:32Watch this. Say that.
- 33:35Oh yeah. Ichi the killer gets a 4.5 from
- 33:41me. This is a movie that I
- 33:43absolutely adore but the CGI at times takes me out right like
- 33:47and I and I. I'm in agreeance of the CGI, but
- 33:51I do think that had this been made a little bit later, the CGI
- 33:58could have been just that much more crisp.
- 34:00Or we could just, they could just UN practical.
- 34:02But there's certain scenes that you can't really do that in this
- 34:05movie. I mean, fuck, we didn't even
- 34:06talk about what Ichi's weapons are.
- 34:10That's for the if you're listening, go watch and figure
- 34:13out like how Ichi does what he does.
- 34:15It is truly such a great imagination that the the author,
- 34:20the mangaka had and that Takashi Miki put into this film.
- 34:26It's truly impressive. This movie is hyper violence.
- 34:31It's hypersexual. It's balls to the wall.
- 34:34It's it, it makes you think constantly trying to decipher
- 34:38what's happening between these characters and what the motives
- 34:40are. It is a bloodbath there.
- 34:44The the sound design, the camera work is just chef's kiss.
- 34:49There are so many shots in this film.
- 34:50You're like, Oh my God, I wouldn't even thought to do
- 34:52that. Like it's, it's incredible.
- 34:55It's a great fucking movie. I think you and everybody should
- 34:58experience this movie. If you love the horror medium,
- 35:00if you love the action, like hyper violent medium that is
- 35:04filmed like this is a movie for you.
- 35:06So yeah. Yeah, for 100%.
- 35:09All right, makes me excited 'cause they're putting idea for
- 35:13this new for the new Ghost of Yotai game.
- 35:17There is a like a camera effect filter that you can put over
- 35:21that is inspired by this director.
- 35:24Takashi Emike, which like he's done a lot of samurai films, so
- 35:27too. Yeah, to to know that they're
- 35:29doing that based off this director, like that's, that's
- 35:33wild. He just, he does crazy shit,
- 35:35dude. Takashi Emike.
- 35:37So you'll have to look into his filmography after this.
- 35:39You can be like, Oh my God, yeah, it's wild.
- 35:42So all right, let's wrap it here, boys.
