- 0:00No one drifts into heaven. Many people, it seems, have no
- 0:04idea where they are going, and those who do may be going in the
- 0:08wrong direction or multiple directions.
- 0:11It doesn't matter how fast you are going, if you're going in
- 0:14the wrong direction or if you're trying to go everywhere, which
- 0:18ultimately leads to nowhere. Look to where you want to go,
- 0:22not where you think you will fall.
- 0:26And I looked, I beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the
- 0:32people, judged of the world, and lifted up upon the cross and
- 0:39slain for the sins of the world. You go where you look.
- 0:46So where are you looking? Hello and welcome back.
- 1:06My name is Larry Corbridge and this is episode 10 of the Stand
- 1:11Forever series. In previous episodes we
- 1:16considered the essential problem in life, meaning separation from
- 1:21God, our father, resulting in chaos, darkness and death.
- 1:26In the last episode we looked at the Lord Jesus Christ broadly
- 1:31through the eyes of the Apostle John.
- 1:35We got a glimpse of Christ as as the solution, the way offsetting
- 1:40chaos, the truth offsetting darkness, and the life
- 1:44offsetting death. In this and many of the coming
- 1:48episodes, we will focus on Christ as the Way.
- 1:53We will then account for Christ as the truth, and after that
- 1:58Christ as the life. Few things are more important
- 2:03than purpose and direction. They change the natural state of
- 2:08things, creating order out of chaos.
- 2:11Many people, it seems, have no idea where they are going, and
- 2:16those who do may be going in the wrong direction or multiple
- 2:20directions. It doesn't matter how fast you
- 2:24are going, if you're going in the wrong direction or if you're
- 2:27trying to go everywhere, which ultimately leads to nowhere.
- 2:32Meaningful purpose and intentional direction are as
- 2:36vital to physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health
- 2:41as good nutrition and exercise. They enhance resilience and
- 2:48survival in extremely harsh and threatening conditions and
- 2:51reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and dementia.
- 2:57Purpose is the why. And if you don't understand the
- 3:00why, all the what's make little difference.
- 3:06It seems that we're pretty good at telling each other what to
- 3:09do. And again, I'm not being
- 3:12critical with this, but we tell each other to be honest, to tell
- 3:17the truth, avoid pornography, forgive love, keep the word of
- 3:21wisdom, serve a mission, pay tithes and offerings, accept
- 3:25callings, magnify callings, make your bed and clean your room.
- 3:29But we we may not be as good at explaining why.
- 3:35A young father talking about overcoming addictions after a
- 3:39failed marriage and years of trying said progress was slow at
- 3:44first as I did not fully understand what was required of
- 3:48me to fully repent. I was merely trying to avoid
- 3:52sin. That's the what?
- 3:56Rather than fighting to change my heart and become a new
- 3:59creature. That's the why.
- 4:05Purpose is destination, and you can't arrive at a destination if
- 4:10you don't know what it is or how to get there.
- 4:13You can't go where you don't know.
- 4:16No one drifts into heaven. The currents of life don't flow
- 4:21and the winds don't blow in that direction.
- 4:26The astounding accomplishment to putting a man on the moon was
- 4:29not the result of manning a spaceship, lighting the fuse and
- 4:34randomly launching it into space, hoping perchance to
- 4:37transport his crew to some Celestia body, safely land, and
- 4:41then bring them home again. When Neil Armstrong stepped foot
- 4:46on the moon, no one said wow, that was lucky.
- 4:51Who would have guessed? Rather, the destination was
- 4:54clear. There was never a question, It
- 4:56was always the moon, the destination was fixed, and it
- 5:01was always the moon, and the course was plotted to go there.
- 5:05Our potential reaches beyond the moon, and while thankfully our
- 5:11life course is not nearly as complicated as a lunar landing,
- 5:15it still requires the same simple process.
- 5:20Fix the destination, identify one's current location, and then
- 5:24chart the course between the two.
- 5:28To chart a course, you must know where you are.
- 5:33We'll call point A and where you want to go point B and then plot
- 5:38the line in between. Noel Pika's Pace was a silver
- 5:44medalist in the 2014 Winter Olympics in the skeleton
- 5:49competition. As you probably know, a skeleton
- 5:52is a small bobsled used for racing down a frozen track head
- 5:57first. It has no steering mechanism.
- 6:02When she was asked how to steer the sled, she simply said you go
- 6:07where you look. I have learned by sad experience
- 6:14the same holds true for mountain biking.
- 6:17You go where you look. If there is a rock in the trail,
- 6:20that must be avoided at all costs.
- 6:23If there is a steep slope or Cliff over which you hope to not
- 6:28sail, the likelihood of hitting the rock or launching into space
- 6:34is greater if you focus on it. It is counterintuitive because
- 6:39our instincts are to lock on the threat with laser like focus,
- 6:44but the more fixed you become on the obstacle or danger, the
- 6:48greater the likelihood of a of disaster.
- 6:51The far better strategy is to force yourself to look down the
- 6:55trail beyond the obstacle or threat.
- 6:59You will likely maneuver around it, but if not, it is much more
- 7:03likely you will keep your balance and bounce over it.
- 7:08Focus is a big deal now. Listen to this.
- 7:14Look to where you want to go, not where you think you will
- 7:19fall. That is true in life as well as
- 7:24skeleton racing and mountain biking.
- 7:27Most people lock onto obstacles and don't look down the trail.
- 7:33You go where you look. Look up beyond the obstacles to
- 7:40better things. Expect more.
- 7:43Expect much more than merely avoiding and solving problems.
- 7:49One man learned to look down the trail beyond the obstacles.
- 7:53He said about his triumphs over pornography, that he, in his
- 7:59words, didn't have a pornography problem, rather a life problem.
- 8:05He said I needed to learn to change the way I viewed the
- 8:09world and my relationships and the gospel.
- 8:15He said he learned only the Lord could heal and strengthen him
- 8:20and that his again in his words, his motivation and focus should
- 8:25be righteousness and integrity before the Lord rather than
- 8:31adapting his behavior to please others or self gratification.
- 8:38This freed him from what he said was the need to seek the
- 8:42approval of others and to please the Lord.
- 8:46Instead you go where you look. Elder Benjamin MZ Tai described
- 8:56how one man was able to overcome an addiction by looking beyond
- 9:00the addiction to a higher purpose of keeping the Spirit in
- 9:04his life. Elder Tai said this for 20
- 9:09years. Brother Wang Zhu Kong struggled
- 9:14with alcohol, cigarettes, and compulsive gambling when
- 9:18introduced to Jesus Christ and his restored Gospel.
- 9:23Brother Wang desired to change for the sake of his young
- 9:27family. His greatest challenge was
- 9:29smoking. A heavy chain smoker, he had
- 9:32tried to quit many times, unsuccessfully.
- 9:36One day these words from the Book of Mormon lodged in his
- 9:39mind, say Elder Time. These are the words with a
- 9:43sincere heart, with real intent. Though previous attempts had
- 9:49failed, he felt perhaps he could change with help from Heavenly
- 9:53Father and Jesus Christ. With sincerity and real intent,
- 9:58Brother Wong acted with faithful determination and found that as
- 10:03he focused more on the new habits he wished to develop,
- 10:07such as studying the Book of Mormon, he focused less on the
- 10:11habits he wanted to lose, continuing on with other Thais.
- 10:18Recalling his experience 15 years later, he remarked, I
- 10:22don't remember when I exactly when I quit smoking, But as I
- 10:27tried hard every day to do the things I knew, know I needed to
- 10:31do to invite the Spirit of the Lord into my life and kept doing
- 10:35them, I was no longer attracted to cigarettes and have not been
- 10:41since. That's the end of that quote.
- 10:44It is one thing to focus on addiction, the obstacle or
- 10:49problem, but it is quite another to focus on God, who alone can
- 10:55resolve it. Those are two different
- 10:59approaches. The first approach is futile
- 11:03because it ignores God. The second taps into power
- 11:08beyond your own. You can struggle to change your
- 11:12behavior, but only God can change your nature.
- 11:17Addictions and many of life's other problems are not causes,
- 11:21but consequences. They are not the disease, but
- 11:25symptoms of a central, systemic, more deadly disease, the failure
- 11:30to center 1's life on God, the source of meaning, the source of
- 11:36light, life, joy, peace and power, the ultimate solution to
- 11:42life's problems. Life's problems, it seems to me,
- 11:46are not overcome by hammering them into the ground.
- 11:50You can pummel a monster with your biggest stick until you
- 11:54think it dead, only for it to rise again and eat you alive
- 11:58when you turn your back to walk away.
- 12:01The truth is and has always been, You can't do it alone.
- 12:08Though try you might. The truth is and has always
- 12:12been, only God can preserve, prosper, prepare, protect,
- 12:17perfect and bless you. The essential problem in life is
- 12:23separation from God our Father. Some people say if you think you
- 12:31have problems, lower your expectations.
- 12:36I've laughed at that advice in the past.
- 12:39If your kids fighting quarrel, for example, be happy they're
- 12:42not robbing banks. If you have a bad day at work,
- 12:47be grateful you have work. Things can always be worse.
- 12:50But maybe, just maybe, we should flip it around.
- 12:56Maybe it should be. If you think you have problems,
- 12:59look up and raise your expectations.
- 13:05Seek not so much to overcome your problems, rather to walk
- 13:09with God. Whatever your problems may be.
- 13:11That's the better strategy. Alma talked a lot about looking
- 13:17forward. He asked, For example, do you
- 13:21look forward with an eye of faith to stand before God, to be
- 13:25judged? I saying to you, Can you imagine
- 13:29yourselves that you hear the voice of the Lord saying unto
- 13:32you in that day, Come unto me, you blessed, can you look up,
- 13:39having the image of God engraving upon your countenance.
- 13:45Later he adds that these words, and thus if you will not nourish
- 13:51the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit
- 13:55thereof, you can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life.
- 14:02And what is the fruit to which we should look forward?
- 14:06The gifts of God's Son, His Spirit and His life.
- 14:11You go where you look, look to the Lord.
- 14:17Nephi wanted to understand the meaning of the tree of life.
- 14:22In response, both the spirit of the Lord and then an Angel
- 14:26repeatedly invited Nephi to look, and each time he looked he
- 14:33saw the Lord. So here's probably 5 examples of
- 14:39this one. The Spirit said unto me, Look,
- 14:45and I looked, and I beheld the tree, and the beauty thereof was
- 14:50far beyond, yeah, exceeding of all beauty, precious above all
- 14:582. The Angel spake unto me, saying,
- 15:01Look, and I looked, and I beheld the Virgin again, bearing a
- 15:07child in her arms. And the Angel said unto me,
- 15:12Behold the Lamb of God, yeah, even the Son of the Eternal
- 15:16Father, 3. And the Angel said unto me,
- 15:20Look, and behold the condescension of God.
- 15:24And I looked, and beheld the Redeemer of the world.
- 15:30Four. And he spake unto me again,
- 15:34saying, Look, And I looked, and I beheld the Lamb of God going
- 15:42forth among the children of men. And then 5 The Angel spake unto
- 15:48me again, saying, Look. And I looked, and I beheld the
- 16:03Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people, judged of the
- 16:10world, and lifted up upon the cross, and slain for the sins of
- 16:17the world. From the beginning of time God
- 16:22has endeavored to help us see the truth that we are dependent
- 16:28on Him. Turn to Him, look to Him.
- 16:34Yes, of course, do all that you can do, but rely on Him.
- 16:40And then in, in the Lord's words, fear ye not stand still
- 16:46to see the salvation of the Lord, for the Lord shall fight
- 16:51for you. Look beyond the problem, Look
- 16:56down the trail to see where you want to go, and deliberately
- 17:01move in that direction. Focus on better things than the
- 17:06problem alone. Lift your sights and want more,
- 17:11much more than merely overcoming problems.
- 17:15Look to God your Father, choose Him and receive His Son and His
- 17:21Spirit and His life. You go where you look, so where
- 17:28are you looking? Great achievement is the result
- 17:33of having, again, as I said, a destination point B, getting a
- 17:38fix on where you are now, point A, and then plotting the line in
- 17:42between and staying on course. While hiking one day with the
- 17:47sun, we lost the trail. We continued bushwhacking
- 17:52without a trail because we knew where we were going.
- 17:56Although we lost the trail, we weren't lost because we knew
- 17:59where we were, where we were going in the direction to get
- 18:03there. Eventually we reconnected with
- 18:06the trail. Knowing where you are headed and
- 18:10the direction to get there is essential to any journey.
- 18:13Otherwise we wander. So what is?
- 18:19What is point B? What is the destination?
- 18:21What is your purpose? Life purpose is different from
- 18:27meaning or meaningfulness. Improving your your golf game
- 18:31can give your life meaning, but that is different from purpose.
- 18:35And the question is not as simple as what purpose you may
- 18:39choose. The better question is, does
- 18:42life have a purpose independent of whatever you may individually
- 18:47ascribe to it and if so, what is it and do you align with it?
- 18:55People say life is a journey. Enjoy the journey.
- 18:59Good advice. But life is also about getting
- 19:03to the end, reunion with God and receiving the gifts of God's
- 19:10Son, God's Spirit and God's life and helping others do the same
- 19:16and in that process become more like the Lord.
- 19:22Or more concisely, we could say it is to partake of the fruit of
- 19:27the tree of life and help others do the same.
- 19:32That's the destination. And with that, by the way, with
- 19:39that we solved the traveling salesman problem described in I
- 19:44think it's episode 6 about chaos.
- 19:48Reducing the stops from so many down to 1 and life becomes
- 19:53simple. Not in the sense of easy, but
- 19:55rather in the sense of uncomplicated.
- 20:00Many of us are either drifting to nowhere or living fragmented
- 20:04lives trying to go in too many directions.
- 20:07Trying to determine the best route to just anywhere or
- 20:11everywhere is the same as charting a course to nowhere.
- 20:15It is the natural state of chaos.
- 20:18The real problem is not finding the best route in life, but
- 20:22reducing the number of destinations to the most
- 20:25important one. Instead of asking what is the
- 20:30best route to many destinations, ask what is the single best
- 20:36destination. That makes the calculation of
- 20:39the best route easy, because the shortest distance between two
- 20:43points, where you are point A and where you want to go point
- 20:47B, may be as simple as a straight line between the two.
- 20:52Your purpose can be of your own making, finding your own truth
- 20:59as a self determining agent, doing your own thing, marching
- 21:02to the beat of your drum, or in the Lord's words, every man
- 21:07walking in the image of his own God.
- 21:11Or your purpose can be the one you were born to reach, reunion
- 21:17with God, receiving the gifts of God's Son, God's Spirit and
- 21:24God's life and helping others do the same and in that process
- 21:29become more like the Lord. That is point B.
- 21:34That is the destination. In the next episode, we will
- 21:39consider how happiness and joy figure into the destination.
- 21:44I hope you will join me then.
