Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: That song came out in 1999, Smash Mouth and All Star.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I believe I had the Nokia cell phone at the time.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, cutting edge.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Light FM, Cubby, Christine, and Kristen. And we're kind of
- 0:10Speaker 1: talking about that because we're reading an article from Reddit.
- 0:14Speaker 1: And the simple question, was life simpler without cell phones?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Was life better?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Was life better?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Before cell phones.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And, you know, people are kind of going back
- 0:24Speaker 2: and forth on it. But I think mainly people are
- 0:28Speaker 2: in favor of no cell phones, that life was better.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Because I see a lot of, like, being present, being
- 0:35Speaker 2: in the moment, experiencing it, talking to people, being excited
- 0:39Speaker 2: when the phone rang because.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You don't know who it is.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, like, we talk for hours. Like, things have just changed.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's just changed us so much.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What is your personal opinion? I'll tell you mine after
- 0:49Speaker 1: you go. Was life better before cell phones?
- 0:54Speaker 2: It's taking up so much of my life right now.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I agree.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That's... I almost get resentful. Like, I know... I need
- 1:01Speaker 2: it and I'm responsible.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It's a heck of a piece of technology, right? It is.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It can do so much.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And I need it, but it can just soak up
- 1:12Speaker 2: all of my time. So I feel like I'm doing
- 1:14Speaker 2: less going out, less creative projects because I fall into
- 1:19Speaker 2: this habit of scrolling and also feel like a slave
- 1:21Speaker 2: to it. Like, you know, like you get the little...
- 1:23Speaker 2: And I feel like I have to respond to every text,
- 1:25Speaker 2: every notification, like right then and there. Emails. Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 1: All hours.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And it's like brain overload. Right.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I totally agree with you. In fact, I a lot
- 1:33Speaker 1: of times will pull up old sporting events on YouTube.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm like, let me check out this New York Knicks
- 1:38Speaker 1: game from 1992. I know I'm weird. And I noticed
- 1:41Speaker 1: the crowd. They're all like watching.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:44Speaker 1: No one's on their phone. Right. Like simple things like that. Right.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Because we feel like we have to document everything. You
- 1:51Speaker 1: mentioned how, like, you used to go to the U.S. Open.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And now, I don't know about your feed, but my
- 1:56Speaker 1: feed was filled, like, last week of people at the U.S. Open,
- 2:00Speaker 1: but there were hardly tennis pictures.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Right, I know.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It was just pictures of drinks.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It was, yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And tents. And VIP laminates.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Exactly. It was more about, like, getting the photo at
- 2:09Speaker 2: the Open. I'm like, I used to go every single
- 2:10Speaker 2: year because we loved going to the U.S. Open and
- 2:13Speaker 2: going to the early matches and you could get up close.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And it wasn't about, notice me, I'm at the Open.
- 2:18Speaker 2: You know, and I'm not, I don't want to slam
- 2:20Speaker 2: that because I get it. Like, I get that it's
- 2:22Speaker 2: exciting that you're in a place that a lot of
- 2:24Speaker 2: people want to go to and you want to share
- 2:27Speaker 2: that with people. But like even even, you know, places
- 2:30Speaker 2: that we've been touring and vacationing, it's and I can't
- 2:35Speaker 2: say it's exactly the cell phone. It's also like social media,
- 2:38Speaker 2: which is tied into the cell phone. But there become
- 2:40Speaker 2: these spots that are like. This is the place you
- 2:42Speaker 2: must get a picture.
- 2:43Speaker 1: It becomes a job.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And now people are lined up for it, whereas before
- 2:47Speaker 2: it was like crowded, but you could get to it.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It's just you got to do it for the gram.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I know it's it's kind of it's just changed everything.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And when you're in the theater, you know, whether it's
- 2:56Speaker 2: live theater or a movie theater and you just want
- 2:59Speaker 2: to send a text message, we all whoever is in
- 3:01Speaker 2: that zone, look at you like I can't eat. You
- 3:04Speaker 2: can't help it. Something is lit up.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you think your phone is on dim, but it's
- 3:08Speaker 1: still pretty bright in that dark theater.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Also, it affects traffic. I mean, forget the whole texting
- 3:12Speaker 1: and driving. Nobody should be doing that. But you know
- 3:14Speaker 1: what I've noticed? The reaction times when a light turns green. Oh, yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 1: A lot of times that first person in line, I
- 3:22Speaker 1: watch the brake lights when the light turns green. And
- 3:24Speaker 1: the light will turn green, and the brake lights will
- 3:26Speaker 1: still be red for like two seconds. Because you know
- 3:28Speaker 1: darn well they were looking down at their phone.
- 3:31Speaker 2: And somebody back there is going, eh. Uh-huh.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So again, technology is amazing. I think it's so cool.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You can send an email from your bed and take
- 3:40Speaker 1: a photo anywhere.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But I do think life was simpler before cell phones. Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 2: There's a, there's a give.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Give take.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah, there really is.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Give us a text at 44363. Hey, what do you
- 3:50Speaker 1: have coming up in the headlines?
- 3:51Speaker 2: We're going to check out the headlines and how did
- 3:53Speaker 2: we form our taste for our favorite foods?
