Latest / Foul Territory / Jim Salisbury on Dave Dombrowski’s candid presser calling out Trea Turner, Rockies fire pitching coach
Transcript
- 0:12Speaker 1: Well, the Phillies show covers the Phillies like nobody else.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And Jim Salisbury is one of the stars. And today,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I think, provided some nice content for the show for
- 0:23Speaker 1: this week and maybe even next week and beyond. Remember,
- 0:26Speaker 1: a year ago, Jim, and great to see you, Dave
- 0:28Speaker 1: Dombrowski used the word elite or not elite, and it
- 0:33Speaker 1: caused really a whole season of content. So did we
- 0:36Speaker 1: get anything like that today from Dombrowski on his end
- 0:39Speaker 1: of season presser?
- 0:41Speaker 2: It's funny you say that, Scott. I was kind of
- 0:45Speaker 2: in my mind hearkening back to that today. Last year,
- 0:50Speaker 2: he sort of laid down kind of an unintentional, inadvertent
- 0:57Speaker 2: challenge to Bryce Harper when Dave Dombrowski wondered aloud if
- 1:03Speaker 2: Harper was still an elite player. Today, in his end-of-season
- 1:09Speaker 2: news conference wrap-up, He laid down a direct.
- 1:15Speaker 3: And overt and.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Fully intentional challenge to Trey Turner, one that he laid
- 1:25Speaker 2: down two days earlier in a face-to-face meeting at Citizens
- 1:31Speaker 2: Bank Park. And he basically told him he's got to
- 1:35Speaker 2: improve his game at shortstop. if he wants to play
- 1:39Speaker 2: there in 27, that's his preferred position. Trey Turner's preferred
- 1:43Speaker 2: position shortstop. He wants to remain there. But, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: three of his four seasons here in Philadelphia defensively have
- 1:53Speaker 2: been poor. And this one was exceptionally poor where he
- 1:58Speaker 2: tied for the lead, a major league lead in errors.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And by most metrics was the worst defensive shortstop in baseball.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So Dombrowski is, Flat out acknowledged they have an issue there.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Kind of everybody knows that. It's the elephant in the room.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And he said, we need to see improvement really from
- 2:15Speaker 2: day one. Said you need to see it in spring
- 2:17Speaker 2: training or they are going to move him off that position,
- 2:20Speaker 2: whether it be outfield or second base. So that was,
- 2:26Speaker 2: to me, the big takeaway where Harper last year was
- 2:29Speaker 2: the big takeaway. Today, it was another $ 300 million player
- 2:34Speaker 2: in Trey Turner.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Jim, do we know how Trey, did Trey react to this?
- 2:38Speaker 4: I mean, we saw Harper's reaction last year. Remember he
- 2:41Speaker 4: was like, he got all mad and said what he
- 2:43Speaker 4: said and he went out and had a great year.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Do we, have we had any word on how Trey
- 2:46Speaker 4: reacted to this or because Trey doesn't say a lot.
- 2:49Speaker 4: He's not like Harper that's out there. So did Trey
- 2:51Speaker 4: just take this in stride and then go to work
- 2:53Speaker 4: or did he have something to say about this?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it just happened, AJ, you know, about five hours ago. So,
- 3:02Speaker 2: You know, I didn't speak with him to get a reaction.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I've been busy just kind of digesting a 62 minute
- 3:08Speaker 2: news conference. I'm sure maybe Trey will respond at some
- 3:12Speaker 2: point publicly. But, you know, Dave did this meeting face
- 3:17Speaker 2: to face with Trey. So everything he said today, he
- 3:21Speaker 2: had said to Trey face to face 48 hours earlier.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And Dave said Trey responded well and understood everything that
- 3:29Speaker 2: was being laid in front of him. understands he needs
- 3:32Speaker 2: to improve to stay at his preferred position. So, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 2: where Harper didn't respond right away either. His response really
- 3:41Speaker 2: came several weeks later, you know, even in just some
- 3:47Speaker 2: of his actions where Dave, you know, wondered if he
- 3:50Speaker 2: was still an elite player. All of a sudden Bryce
- 3:52Speaker 2: has taken BP at an indoor cage in his off-season
- 3:57Speaker 2: workouts wearing a T-shirt that says elite. He responded again
- 4:01Speaker 2: in spring training. And then he did respond in action with,
- 4:04Speaker 2: as you point out, a very good season. So no
- 4:08Speaker 2: response yet from Trey, but he told Dombrowski face-to-face he understood.
- 4:13Speaker 2: He understood he needs to get better offensively and defensively.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Defensively being the one that could lead to a change.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Dombrowski expressed confidence that he could rebound offensively after also
- 4:24Speaker 2: a down season on that side of the ball. But
- 4:27Speaker 2: to me, this challenge was mostly defensive. was really completely
- 4:31Speaker 2: about defense. We all know the importance of strength up
- 4:34Speaker 2: the middle. We see it in this postseason with these
- 4:38Speaker 2: teams still remaining, their strength up the middle. And, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 2: it just was a real struggle for Trey this year
- 4:46Speaker 2: at such an important position. And, you know, long story short,
- 4:50Speaker 2: they're ready to make a move if he doesn't show
- 4:52Speaker 2: quick improvement in spring training or whenever preparation for the
- 4:56Speaker 2: 27th season begins.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Would that move be to the outfield, I take it, then?
- 5:03Speaker 5: Is that where they're considering or, like, right?
- 5:07Speaker 2: You know, he's played some outfield earlier in his career.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I have to go back and look it up. I
- 5:11Speaker 2: think it may have been at the minor league level.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It's always been kind of assumed that would be a
- 5:17Speaker 2: landing spot. I mean, with that athleticism, you have to
- 5:21Speaker 2: think he might be a pretty good center fielder, left fielder,
- 5:25Speaker 2: center fielder. But I also think second base would be
- 5:28Speaker 2: a consideration. because I think shortstop is definitely his preferred position.
- 5:35Speaker 2: That's why he came to Philadelphia, to play shortstop. The
- 5:38Speaker 2: Padres offered him more money. My understanding was they wanted
- 5:42Speaker 2: to bounce him around the diamond a little bit, kind
- 5:45Speaker 2: of use him in a bunch of different positions, shortstop
- 5:48Speaker 2: being one of them, second base and center field. Philadelphia said,
- 5:51Speaker 2: you come, you're our shortstop. He took the $ 300 million.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I think if he doesn't stay on shortstop, he probably
- 5:57Speaker 2: would prefer to stay in the infield. That would put,
- 6:00Speaker 2: in my mind, second base in play. That's a position
- 6:02Speaker 2: he has played with the Dodgers. But I also think
- 6:05Speaker 2: the outfield would be in play as well. So he
- 6:09Speaker 2: kind of controls his own destiny with the way he plays,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you know, right out of the gate. It almost sounds
- 6:14Speaker 2: like spring training, whatever that looks like in the coming year,
- 6:18Speaker 2: is almost like going to be this day-to-day tryout where
- 6:22Speaker 2: he has to perform to keep that position. Dombrowski indicated
- 6:26Speaker 2: that if it's not looking good, they would be open
- 6:28Speaker 2: to a Quick on-the-spot change.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Hey, everybody.
- 6:33Speaker 4: It's the best time of the year for sports right now.
- 6:35Speaker 4: You got the NFL. You got the NBA about to start.

- 6:55Speaker 4: I don't really need it for baseball. I got that
- 6:57Speaker 4: gold card. But for you out there, use SeatGeek for
- 7:00Speaker 4: any playoff needs that you might have.

- 7:29Speaker 1: use it later. Gracias, SeatGeek.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Well, that's not always the worst thing.
- 7:33Speaker 5: I think sometimes when you're coming up and you're not comfortable,
- 7:37Speaker 5: you always kind of have to fight for your position.
- 7:39Speaker 3: You sometimes get the best out of players. So that's
- 7:40Speaker 3: never the worst thing in the world.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Let's shift over to first base for a little bit
- 7:44Speaker 5: where with Bryce Harper, now they're talking about trying to
- 7:47Speaker 5: get him off his feet a little bit. Maybe Schwarber
- 7:49Speaker 5: comes in and Bryce DH's Schwarber plays some games at
- 7:52Speaker 5: first base. Now we're hearing a little bit where JT
- 7:55Speaker 5: who could use a little rest or something. Now he
- 7:57Speaker 5: might take some games at first base. It's like, there's
- 7:59Speaker 5: only so many games at first base where you can
- 8:01Speaker 5: give guys some rest pretty much. So what are you
- 8:03Speaker 5: hearing the latest on that? And how do they, how
- 8:05Speaker 5: do you think that's going to play out where they're
- 8:07Speaker 5: going to juggle people?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Right. These are the, um, machinations of things you have
- 8:12Speaker 2: to do with an aging team. JT is going to
- 8:14Speaker 2: be 36 Harper and Turner. We'll both turn 34 next year. Um,
- 8:20Speaker 2: Harper played all 162 this year. That was something he
- 8:23Speaker 2: really wanted to do, but I don't think it'll happen again.
- 8:26Speaker 2: They just feel like they'll help these guys' production if
- 8:29Speaker 2: they can get them off their feet a little bit.
- 8:32Speaker 2: In particular, you know, they'll use Schwarber at first base
- 8:35Speaker 2: a little bit to try to get Bryce that half
- 8:39Speaker 2: a day off as a DH. But I think one
- 8:41Speaker 2: of their big focuses in terms of, you know, to steal–
- 8:46Speaker 2: the expression from another sport load management would be to
- 8:49Speaker 2: cut back on JT a little bit behind the plate.
- 8:51Speaker 2: And maybe that will allow him to produce more offensively.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I believe they'll probably look to upgrade the backup catching
- 8:59Speaker 2: position to bring in somebody that can almost be a
- 9:03Speaker 2: 1A to JT. And maybe he would, you know, he
- 9:07Speaker 2: would have more offensive output throughout the season if he
- 9:10Speaker 2: got a little bit more rest. They kind of say
- 9:13Speaker 2: it every year that they want to, give JT a
- 9:15Speaker 2: little more time. And then the way things shake out,
- 9:19Speaker 2: he's so valuable behind the dish and the way he
- 9:23Speaker 2: leads a game for that pitching staff, the way he
- 9:25Speaker 2: bonds with that pitching staff. We know how good that
- 9:28Speaker 2: starting staff is to me. He's a big part of it.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So he always ends up behind the plate more than
- 9:33Speaker 2: anyone expects, but it sounds like they're, they're ready to
- 9:36Speaker 2: really try to follow through on that plan in the
- 9:39Speaker 2: coming season. It's a, It's an aging team. It's an
- 9:42Speaker 2: expensive team. It's a team whose production has declined. These
- 9:46Speaker 2: are the tweaks you have to make to try to
- 9:48Speaker 2: maximize the production.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Jim, they brought back Don Mattingly as manager. They tried
- 9:54Speaker 4: Alex Cora, right? We know that. He said no. They
- 9:58Speaker 4: tried Chase Utley. They tried Raul Labanez. Was it ex-Philly
- 10:02Speaker 4: or boss here? Because once they got past Alex Cora,
- 10:06Speaker 4: and why didn't they just hire Don Mattingly from the get-go?
- 10:10Speaker 4: If they knew Don Mattingly was a guy, why did
- 10:12Speaker 4: they even ask for permission to speak to other people?
- 10:15Speaker 4: I don't understand why they just didn't say, Don, you
- 10:17Speaker 4: did a great job.
- 10:18Speaker 3: You're the manager.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I agree with you on that. I thought he did
- 10:21Speaker 2: a great job. He had a 590 winning percentage. That's
- 10:24Speaker 2: 95 wins over a full season. You know, the former
- 10:28Speaker 2: Philly factor, it's almost like the former Yankee factor. Their
- 10:31Speaker 2: last three managers, Joe Girardi, Rob Thompson, and Don Mattingly,
- 10:35Speaker 2: all extensive New York Yankees bloodlines and roots. Why did
- 10:39Speaker 2: they seek other? Well, I think they're all a little
- 10:42Speaker 2: bit separate cases. Cora is a guy that they tried
- 10:46Speaker 2: to hire in April, even before, even before they let,
- 10:50Speaker 2: Rob Thompson go 48 hours before Rob Thompson got the
- 10:53Speaker 2: word that he was being let go. Dave offered the
- 10:56Speaker 2: job to Alex core. They were together in Boston. They
- 10:59Speaker 2: have a tremendous respect and working relationship for each other
- 11:02Speaker 2: or with each other. I want a world series together.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Dave has compared them to Jim Leland and Tony La Russa,
- 11:08Speaker 2: two hall of famers and, and thanks, you know, the
- 11:11Speaker 2: world of them professionally. He wanted him, wanted to hire
- 11:13Speaker 2: him in April. After he was let go of Boston,
- 11:16Speaker 2: Cora was not ready. did not want to do it,
- 11:19Speaker 2: wanted to take the year off. You know, when the
- 11:23Speaker 2: season ends, Don still has the interim tag despite that
- 11:26Speaker 2: terrific record and turning the team around. Dave reaches out
- 11:31Speaker 2: to Cora. Cora says he doesn't want to be considered.
- 11:33Speaker 2: He's not going to manage in 27. So no offer
- 11:36Speaker 2: was made there. There was contact with Utley and Ibanez recently.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I think the world of both guys covered them both.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I think they both are managerial Timber, but, you know,
- 11:50Speaker 2: neither one of them are interested in going that.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Route at the moment.
- 11:53Speaker 2: And I'm not sure either one of them would have
- 11:57Speaker 2: ended up with this job. I don't think either one
- 11:59Speaker 2: of them, despite the contact, officially interviewed. I think it
- 12:02Speaker 2: was more a case of Dave doing his due diligence.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And he mentioned that there are major league rules. that
- 12:10Speaker 2: stipulate you have to interview people or at least make
- 12:14Speaker 2: contact with people, and maybe he was checking those boxes,
- 12:17Speaker 2: even though he didn't really have to check those boxes
- 12:20Speaker 2: when they elevated Rob Thompson from interim in 2022 during
- 12:24Speaker 2: the postseason after he took off over from Girardi. I
- 12:29Speaker 2: believe personally that once they knew Cora was not going
- 12:34Speaker 2: to manage that it was Mattingly's job, But I think Dave,
- 12:39Speaker 2: you know, like I said, wanted to practice due diligence,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you know, make some contacts. And he also wanted to
- 12:45Speaker 2: talk to Turner, talk to Real Muto. And that was,
- 12:48Speaker 2: you know, why the delay in this end-of-season press conference.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Don had some vacation time in there. But it also,
- 12:56Speaker 2: it just worked out that, you know, I think this
- 12:58Speaker 2: worked out the way it should have, in my opinion.
- 13:01Speaker 2: You play to a 590 winning percentage. You've got guys,
- 13:05Speaker 2: you've got men like Kyle Schwarber, And JT Real Mudo,
- 13:11Speaker 2: after a very difficult loss, getting eliminated from the postseason,
- 13:14Speaker 2: both speaking out in favor of Don returning. I think
- 13:17Speaker 2: that means something. So I think it ended up the
- 13:20Speaker 2: way it should have. Don, man, he is a good man.
- 13:23Speaker 2: He's humble. He's classy. I asked him if he felt
- 13:27Speaker 2: slighted that, you know, just in spite of the performance that,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you know, he helped his team with this year. I
- 13:33Speaker 2: know they didn't get to where they wanted to go,
- 13:35Speaker 2: but they got in the post season after a nine
- 13:37Speaker 2: and 19 star, uh, what 79 and 55 under Don Mattingly.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I asked him if he felt slighted that they had,
- 13:44Speaker 2: you know, these overtures toward core. And he said, no,
- 13:47Speaker 2: he just wants to help the Philadelphia Phillies. He said,
- 13:50Speaker 2: I was a 19th round pick.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Uh, okay.
- 13:53Speaker 2: A lot of, I was passed over by a lot
- 13:54Speaker 2: of people in that draft. And as we know, he
- 13:56Speaker 2: became a pretty good player. So, um, He returns and
- 14:00Speaker 2: he just wants to help the Phillies. And I think
- 14:02Speaker 2: they ended up with the right man. Time will tell.
- 14:05Speaker 2: But based on what I saw for five months in 2026,
- 14:12Speaker 2: you know, I think they ended up with the right man.
- 14:13Speaker 2: You hear a lot of squawking about his bullpen moves.
- 14:16Speaker 2: You hear that about every manager in baseball. Every manager
- 14:21Speaker 2: in baseball's bullpen moves are picked apart. It's a pass-fail business.
- 14:25Speaker 2: You either get the three outs or you don't. And
- 14:28Speaker 2: when you fail, it always goes on the manager. It
- 14:30Speaker 2: seldom goes on the player. He did not have an
- 14:33Speaker 2: exceptional bullpen. Matter of fact, he had a poor bullpen
- 14:35Speaker 2: at the end to lean on. I think he did
- 14:38Speaker 2: the best he could do with that bullpen. And like
- 14:41Speaker 2: I said, I think he deserves to be back.

- 15:46Speaker 4: Man, you sound like Mark Wiener, one of our producers
- 15:48Speaker 4: on here. He loves Don Mattingly. I love Don Mattingly, too. So,
- 15:51Speaker 4: I mean, I didn't think anyone could love. Jim, I
- 15:53Speaker 4: didn't think anybody could love Don Mattingly more than Mark
- 15:56Speaker 4: Wiener does, but you just proved me.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Wrong in that. And I love Don Mattingly. I think
- 15:59Speaker 3: he did a good job. He did a great job.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I'm not expressing any affection for him.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I'm appreciating his work.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Yes, that was more a little bit of a dig
- 16:08Speaker 4: at Mark because how much he loves Don Mattingly.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Well, be careful.
- 16:12Speaker 3: He's the boss.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Eh, well.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Sometimes. Sometimes.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Carlos Mendoza was brought in as third base coach slash
- 16:22Speaker 4: infield instructor.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Savior of Trey Turner.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Yes, but when teams do this, they bring in ex-managers.
- 16:33Speaker 4: A lot of times the manager feels pressure that, oh,
- 16:36Speaker 4: there's a guy that if I mess up, Don Mattingly,
- 16:39Speaker 4: Rob Thompson, right?
- 16:40Speaker 3: You see it all the time. There's nothing like this
- 16:43Speaker 3: going on in Philadelphia or is there?
- 16:46Speaker 2: I don't sense that, but I get where you're going.
- 16:50Speaker 2: I'm picking up what you're laying down. But who knows?
- 16:55Speaker 2: I mean, I, if, if, if I don't think Don
- 16:58Speaker 2: feels pressure on anything, I really don't. He's 65 years old.
- 17:02Speaker 2: He had a great playing career. He's so comfortable in
- 17:06Speaker 2: his baseball skin. He might end up in the hall
- 17:08Speaker 2: of fame someday. He got a two-year extension, so it'll
- 17:12Speaker 2: take him until he's 67. I'm sure it's a generous package.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I don't think he feels any pressure at all. But
- 17:19Speaker 2: it was a quick hire on Mendoza. Obviously, they targeted
- 17:23Speaker 2: him the day after they let Bobby Dickerson go. Bobby
- 17:26Speaker 2: Dickerson was an excellent infield coach, hard worker. I mean,
- 17:31Speaker 2: he made Alec Boehm into a very passable Major League
- 17:34Speaker 2: third baseman after he could have played himself out of
- 17:37Speaker 2: the majors a few years ago. Kevin Long, an outstanding
- 17:42Speaker 2: hitting coach, turned around Kyle Schwarber's career. He didn't forget
- 17:46Speaker 2: how to hitting coach all of a sudden. I just
- 17:48Speaker 2: think a lot of this team's problems, you know, go
- 17:51Speaker 2: beyond the hitting coach. I don't know if any of
- 17:53Speaker 2: them can change and all of a sudden become selective
- 17:55Speaker 2: hitters at this age. I mean, you know, they were
- 17:59Speaker 2: a top five across the board offensive team last year.
- 18:01Speaker 2: This year they slipped into the 20s.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Hey.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It's the way the business goes. Sometimes you look for
- 18:07Speaker 2: a fresh voice and that's what they're looking for on
- 18:09Speaker 2: the hitting side. They haven't named anybody there, but you know,
- 18:13Speaker 2: Mendoza comes in and his work is cut out for him.
- 18:14Speaker 2: He's got to help Trey Turner stay at third base.
- 18:17Speaker 2: I'm sorry, at shortstop. And, um, if that doesn't happen,
- 18:21Speaker 2: Trey will be turned over. I think maybe to the
- 18:23Speaker 2: outfield coach, Paco Figueroa, or he'll be working with Mendoza
- 18:27Speaker 2: on learning second base. So, uh, I don't think Don
- 18:30Speaker 2: is going to be threatened by, um, The addition of
- 18:33Speaker 2: Carlos Mendoza, it's just my personal opinion, having gotten to
- 18:37Speaker 2: know him a little bit. I don't think Don Mattingly
- 18:39Speaker 2: is threatened by anything.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I agree. I agree with the last part.
- 18:46Speaker 3: I agree. It's just one of those, Scott. It's just
- 18:49Speaker 3: one of those moves.
- 18:50Speaker 1: No, I agree. People said that about Donnie when Topper
- 18:54Speaker 1: had the job. They're like, ah, Topper, he's good.
- 18:56Speaker 3: He doesn't care.
- 18:57Speaker 1: He's got the job, no problem. Then all of a sudden,
- 19:00Speaker 1: Don Mattingly named manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. If there's
- 19:03Speaker 1: a guy who has done it, he's got a name.
- 19:05Speaker 2: He wasn't named initially. I mean, he wasn't the first choice.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I mean, they went after Cora. Right after he was
- 19:12Speaker 2: let go from Boston, they went after Cora when the
- 19:17Speaker 2: team was 9-19. And when he decided not to manage,
- 19:20Speaker 2: they went to Don. But I believe Don. He said
- 19:24Speaker 2: he didn't come here looking to take Rob Thompson's job
- 19:27Speaker 2: a year ago. He came here because he wanted to.
- 19:31Speaker 2: And there's another factor there. His son's the general manager.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And I think there's a storybook ideal in the back
- 19:39Speaker 2: of his mind that the elusive World Series, imagine that
- 19:43Speaker 2: comes with his son by his side, even if it
- 19:45Speaker 2: was the bench coach or now, if he's the, if
- 19:48Speaker 2: he's the manager, there will be a hell of a
- 19:50Speaker 2: story if it happens. And if he's replaced, I think he'll, I, I,
- 19:55Speaker 2: I believe him. I think he cares about the Phillies.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I think he would tip his hat and say, thank
- 20:00Speaker 2: you and move on.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Well, Jim, thank you. We got to run. We're against
- 20:04Speaker 1: the clock, but thanks for swinging by. Appreciate you much
- 20:07Speaker 1: more on the Philly show, by the way. Jim, thanks
- 20:09Speaker 1: for the late stop by. Big day with the presser there.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And you can catch the show QR code side of
- 20:14Speaker 1: the screen. Otherwise, just type in The Philly Show, pod, YouTube,
- 20:17Speaker 1: whatever it is. Hey, that was a quick one for
- 20:20Speaker 1: the new pitching coach for the Rockies. I'm not going
- 20:24Speaker 1: to attempt to say the name.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Alan Leitman?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Maybe I said it right.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Leitman?
- 20:30Speaker 1: Whatever it is, they gave him a season. He's out.
- 20:34Speaker 1: They said, hey, figure out Coors Field in a year.
- 20:37Speaker 1: You didn't do it. You're out.
- 20:40Speaker 3: It's easy, guys. It's easy. Anyone can do it.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Nobody can do it.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Nobody's figured it out yet.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Nobody.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Somebody's got to be able to figure something out. I
- 20:50Speaker 4: don't know who it's going to be, but whenever someone
- 20:52Speaker 4: does figure it out, they're going to be expensive for
- 20:54Speaker 4: the Rockies to hire.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Ubaldo Jimenez figured it out himself for a year. Aaron
- 21:01Speaker 1: Cook had it for a year.
- 21:03Speaker 4: There's been people that have– Kyle Freeland's had a nice
- 21:05Speaker 4: career pitching there.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 1: He's better there. He's actually a free agent.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I know.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I mean, he hasn't been outstanding there, but he's had
- 21:14Speaker 4: a nice career, and he's won a lot of games
- 21:16Speaker 4: for them there.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Colorado's a beautiful place. Just ask Alana. She'll tell you.
- 21:23Speaker 1: The Rockies are going to do some experimenting.
- 21:26Speaker 3: What?
- 21:27Speaker 1: I don't know. I just wanted to lay the blanket statement.
- 21:32Speaker 1: They actually did the calling the pitches from the dugout
- 21:34Speaker 1: thing for a little bit of time this season.
- 21:38Speaker 3: That's not the problem. That's not the problem. I'm just saying.
- 21:41Speaker 1: No, no, I know that's not the problem. I'm just
- 21:42Speaker 1: saying they're going to be one of the organizations that
- 21:46Speaker 1: tries some uniqueness. The Marlins are like them too right now.
- 21:49Speaker 1: The Marlins call the pitch from the dugout. The Marlins
- 21:51Speaker 1: have the pitchers doing the sim games and or doing
- 21:55Speaker 1: a day like we talked about with Tyler Phillips on
- 21:58Speaker 1: the mound in a big league game instead of a
- 21:59Speaker 1: bullpen day. So that was my point. The Rockies might
- 22:02Speaker 1: get experimental again when they weren't for a while with
- 22:07Speaker 1: Bill Schmidt and kind of the same people there for
- 22:09Speaker 1: a while.
- 22:10Speaker 3: By the way, you know what fell apart for the
- 22:11Speaker 3: Marlins at the end of the year? Everything? Yes, well,
- 22:16Speaker 3: also that.
- 22:17Speaker 4: But I was going to say their pitching got kind
- 22:18Speaker 4: of worn down. I mean, Sandy and Perez got hurt
- 22:21Speaker 4: for a long time. Sandy, you know, their pitching kind
- 22:23Speaker 4: of worn down because they were doing things that nobody's
- 22:25Speaker 4: ever done before, except.
- 22:26Speaker 3: For like in the 50s and 60s, forever ago. That's fair.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I'm not used to it. I'm not used to it. Sorry.
- 22:34Speaker 3: All the pitches, sometimes, you know. Sometimes it's not the
- 22:37Speaker 3: X's and O's, Scott. It's the Jimmy's and the Joe's.
