- 1:55Speaker 4: Am I right?
- 1:56Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yes, this is a multi-volume.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Uh, one of my friends described that I should sell it with big chains and issue it only to.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Uh, my friends described that I should sell it with big chains and issue it only to super yacht owners as their boat anchor.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Well, we've got a whole format of music for you called Yacht Rock, so it goes all hand in hand.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah, there's that, Sign me up.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Okay, you got it.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So, randy, obviously you're a Porsche-phile.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And the boys said, oh Porsche, and I'm thinking, no, I think it.
- 2:27Speaker 1: So, randy, obviously you're a Porsche-phile.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And the boys said, oh Porsche, and I'm thinking, no, I think it's Porsche.
- 2:30Speaker 1: How do you pronounce it?
- 2:32Speaker 4: Well, ferry Porsche, when I met him, said Porsche, porsche, porsche, it's Austrian, and that's how they pronounce that final E.
- 2:43Speaker 4: It's sort of like a little bit of a sachet.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It's a Porsche, porsche, it's Austrian, and that's how they pronounce that.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Final E.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's sort of like a little bit of a sachet.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's a Porsche.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Porsche.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So do you tell all your friends you're driving a Porsche.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I am a very fortunate man.
- 2:55Speaker 4: I do drive a Porsche, but I don't tell everybody.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Oh, I guess.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I just did.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I guess.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So what model do you have?
- 3:05Speaker 4: I'm a very fortunate man.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I've got a Cayenne Hybrid oh, so I can be politically correct here in California, but I've got all the suspension packages on the thing that'll make it go around the corners more like a Macan or even a.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Well, it handles very well yeah.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I had some really good advice.
- 3:26Speaker 1: You know, I have known a few Porsche.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I'm just going to call it Porsche, just to make it a text Porsche is fine, porsche is fine Good.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I have known a lot of Porsche-philes and there is a certain thing that you guys have that I think all of us corvette owners really admire and aspire to.
- 3:53Speaker 1: How's that?
- 3:55Speaker 4: okay, I've written about corvette, so I've got a whole space in my heart for them too.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, uh, it's, it's a different way of looking at sport cars and absolutely, and and um, I, when people tell me, because I review all sorts of things, you know, sure, and, and we have the americans, we have the germans, and then we have the japanese or asian brands, and they all have their own intricacies, little niches, yeah, and I will tell you that I thoroughly enjoy driving German brand cars because I'm coming out of an American car, and not that they're better, they're just different, correct.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But the Porsche, to me, is at the top of the heap and we have a friend of ours that we advertise for and do work with.
- 4:48Speaker 1: He owns a company called what is the name of the company Gulf Coast, gulf Coast Auto Shield, and he has these events from time to time they're called car socials, and he does a lot of high-end cars very high.
- 5:06Speaker 1: The last, uh, the last event that he had featured the porsche brand and we, we, we spoke with, uh, several of the porsche owners here in town, very passionate group, and uh, and you know, there's an admiration there that I don't even know how to explain it, but we really enjoyed our conversations with them, let me put it that way.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Oh, that's great.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I mean you guys that are the Porsche-philes, are really passionate about it.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Now I'm not talking about, you know, somebody buys a Porsche and then turns around and flips it, not that kind of thing.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm talking about guys that are really into Porsche.
- 5:43Speaker 1: My old high school buddy, my hot rod friend, ross Putnam.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He actually has a Porsche and absolutely loves the thing.
- 5:49Speaker 1: It's garage kept with a cover over it.
- 5:52Speaker 1: He drives it on nice days.
- 5:53Speaker 1: One of those kind of guys.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm not that, you're not that.
- 5:57Speaker 4: You drive, yours, I drive.
- 5:59Speaker 4: And not only that, I've always sort of thought of myself less of a car guy and more of a people guy.
- 6:07Speaker 4: That was what appealed to me about doing this book project was the chance to meet and talk to all these racers and designers and engineers and managers and bosses and my God, have they got the stories and that's what sold me on the project interesting, well and uh, you know, that really kind of parlays into the whole corvette admiration that you have, because you absolutely you've, you've been there and I will same, same, yeah it, and it's uh, it's a group of us that all get together.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I mean, these guys that are with me today, I really attribute the Corvette passion that I've had almost all of my life, and so it's all kind of bundled in together.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We admire all cars, but I will tell you that my choice happens to be the Corvette, so let's talk about your book.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to ask a question about that.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Getting to the book, when you interviewed these folks and you talked about the people, was there a common thread or a theme that they all kind of had that they don't know they have, but you picked up on it to put in the book.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And is this the first volume?
- 7:21Speaker 2: I understand there's more to come after this book.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I'll answer the second part first, which is there are many more more to come after this book.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Uh, I'll answer the second part first, which is there are many more volumes to come.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Uh, right now, probably, it looks like another 14, so reinforce your bookshelves.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Ah, you've been sold by encyclopedia britannica I can tell you that right now well, actually the killer was when, when porsia offered me this project, a guy named Dieter Landenberger and his colleague in the archive, jens Torner we were at dinner it was my last night there after working for about four weeks on another book project and I took him out to dinner to thank him for their time.
- 8:00Speaker 4: And they said, randy, we have a book idea for you.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And you know you hear that and you think, oh goody, the covered bridges of Bavaria, there you go.
- 8:13Speaker 4: And then Dieter said we would like you to do Porsche's racing history.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 8:19Speaker 4: And after I picked myself up off the floor and asked why me?
- 8:24Speaker 4: They said well, as an American, you will cover Porsche's racing history in the world.
- 8:29Speaker 4: If we give it to a German, he will say Porsche raced throughout Germany.
- 8:34Speaker 4: And oh, there were races in America and the UK.
- 8:37Speaker 4: If we give it to a Brit, he will say Porsche raced at Silverstone and Aintree period, end of book.
- 8:44Speaker 4: But an American is going to cover the world.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And that was, again, part of the fun of this thing.
- 8:50Speaker 4: So, to answer the first part of your question, the thing that is uniform with all of them is their passion that as, as you mentioned, about Corvettes and your passion for that mark Mark, these guys, these men and women that have created these cars and these interiors and these marketing plans.
- 9:15Speaker 4: It is deep in their hearts, deep in their soul, to make something that carries on the legend and the legacy Passion, passion, passion, passion, passion.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I should actually learn the word for it in German.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah, is there a certain year?
- 9:45Speaker 1: Are you dividing this up into years?
- 9:47Speaker 1: How are you going about a multi-volume book?
- 10:07Speaker 4: pick up the, the, the german economic miracle of the 1950s, and carry it through porsche's development into a worldwide brand.
- 10:11Speaker 4: And dieter looked at me and said, no, no, no, randy ferdinand porsche raced the first car he ever built in 1899.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Porsche racing starts there.
- 10:20Speaker 4: And I thought, oh boy, yeah, this is just doubled.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And then he said the two magic words uh, we would like it.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Uh, encyclopedic and comprehensive.
- 10:35Speaker 4: So you tell an author that you want something encyclopedic and comprehensive.
- 10:43Speaker 4: And I just went nuts.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I interviewed, I interviewed, go ahead, I'm sorry, no, no no, I'm sorry, I was just gonna say I I'm having a hard time imagining, you know that many books I mean you go back and and parsing it out, like you said, into sections and and then trying to figure out a timeline to do all that in Well yeah, the whole pre-planning of the book.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I mean that in itself would take me years.
- 11:13Speaker 4: It almost took me years.
- 11:14Speaker 4: I mean, it has taken me years.
- 11:16Speaker 4: This dinner conversation happened in November of 2011.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Wow, david Bull signed on to the book in the spring of 2012, and I've been working on it since.
- 11:26Speaker 4: But I've been doing Porsche books since 1990, so I'd already met some people and I'd already begun thinking about.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I'm a racing fan, I love motorsports, and so Porsche's motorsports program has always been somewhere circulating in my brain between Between Porsche and Corvette, my two race cars.
- 11:53Speaker 4: So when this thing came up and Dietrich said, no, 1899,.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Well, so you start at 1899 and you go to the present.
- 11:57Speaker 4: The problem is, as a book author hoping to sell books, there aren't too many folks around who were alive in 1899 to watch Ferdinand Porsche race his electric car up a mountain, and so, as we organized the books to try to make some sensible start point, we kind of plopped it down right in the middle, and then we started looking for a year that would would really be identifiable, and, of course, 1968 is the year the 917 was invented, if you will, and everybody's heard of the 917.
- 12:43Speaker 4: So that became the point, and so what I do now is kind of a oh, I think they call it in media res.
- 12:48Speaker 4: It's where you start in the middle.
- 12:50Speaker 4: It's like a movie start in the middle of it, go a little bit, do a flashback and then bring it right back up to the present and on through to 1999, when my series of books will end very interesting.
- 13:04Speaker 1: uh, so it's really Well.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, but I understand, so let me ask you this.
- 13:09Speaker 1: So is this book on the shelves, ready to be purchased now?
- 13:13Speaker 1: I?
- 13:16Speaker 4: think volume one is, if not already, in the US, on the way it was printed in Hungary by a company called Interpress.
- 13:24Speaker 4: They do wonderful work.
- 13:26Speaker 4: The way it was printed in Hungary by a company called Interpress they do wonderful work.
- 13:31Speaker 4: And I know for a fact that the publisher's already gotten the first advanced copies.
- 13:35Speaker 4: We are launching this book at an event called Portia Works Reunion, which takes place during the Monterey Pebble Beach Auto Week in about three weeks in Monterey, california, and I think that that's the first real availability for customers.
- 13:56Speaker 4: I imagine you can preorder it on what is it?
- 14:01Speaker 4: Wwwbullpublishingcom or Amazon?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Probably Amazon, yeah.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Bullpublishingcom or amazon probably amazon, yeah, I, I.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I know that jeff anderson, who's the, the general manager, uh, has been talking about ways to distribute the book, so well, I'll tell you that.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Uh, I know that every porsche fan is uh watching or is downloading a podcast of this interview right now?
- 14:26Speaker 3: I hope so yeah, well, we.
- 14:29Speaker 1: We hope so for your sake as well.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Thank you, yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 1: How many pages is it the?
- 14:34Speaker 4: first volume, first five, is 432 pages, about 260 photographs, maps, technical drawings, some really really really cool notes from some of the managers and some of the drivers about how they take certain turns.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Where the refueling stops are they?
- 15:00Speaker 4: When Dieter and Jens offered me this project, they basically threw open the doors to the archive and said go, look, research do wow, how do you do that?
- 15:13Speaker 1: I assume that you did that in germany.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Are you fluent, fluent, fluent in german?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Getting there?
- 15:21Speaker 1: You're getting there, because I would assume that those early books mainly were German.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Oh, no, 99% of everything is German.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Yeah, but Google Translate is my best friend.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Ah, there you go.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Really good Key stroking in German, that's how we got the Porsche, the Porsche, the Porsche.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That's how they do the Porsche, the Porsche, the.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Porsche.
- 15:46Speaker 4: That's how they do the Porsche, exactly, exactly.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Well, it sounds like an intriguing book.
- 15:51Speaker 3: And Jeff Heitzman offered a suggestion.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Ah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Lion Shot is Passion.
- 15:59Speaker 3: One of our listeners online sent that in.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yes, thank you, jeff Heitzman.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I can't imagine how he would know that but at any rate, uh, well it, it's uh great talking with you, randy leffingwell.
- 16:13Speaker 1: The book is called, against all the others, porsche's racing history, volume one.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And uh, I know that, hey, you know, even though we're still at the very end of july, we ain't got that many months to go before Christmas gets here.
- 16:27Speaker 1: What a great Christmas gift for those Porsche-philes.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Please, please.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Think of me at Christmas.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Not to give it to me, but to give it to your friends.
- 16:35Speaker 1: There you go there you go Well, Randy, it's great talking to you.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Thanks again for your time this morning.

- 19:21Speaker 1: Mr Mars mentioned this to me longer.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Mr Mars mentioned this to me.
- 19:24Speaker 1: We talked about it a couple of weeks ago and thinking you know, why are we making this poor guy get up at 3.30 in the morning to drive an hour and a half over here and then do all of this work and get all these guests, and he's going.
- 19:36Speaker 1: It's killing me.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I said, well, let's not kill you yet We've got other ways to do that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Exactly so that's why we kind of cut back on the hours.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Good stuff, and we're hoping that you like it as well.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and it aligns with some of the other things we do, like the Houston Auto Show and Kielton Wheels.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And that's not to say that we won't do another three-hour show, because we will if we've got something special lined up for you, but we're going to start it at 10.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Most public events start at 10 o'clock on a Saturday morning, so it just makes more sense to kind of align it with all of that.
- 20:08Speaker 2: We're all about the public, we are.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Oh yeah, now you know, when Stan announces another Tailpipes and Tacos and he wants to start at 8 o'clock in the morning, we're on it, we're on it.
- 20:16Speaker 2: We'll be there.
- 20:18Speaker 3: I talked to Chase yesterday and you know they're looking at their calendar, the racing and doing still the hurricane kind of messed things up a little bit.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Yep, but they're still thinking about looking at something in the fall, so we're trying to coordinate some dates Good.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Yep, fall is good.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I'll tell you what that last at Tailpipes and Tacos was a hit.
- 20:37Speaker 3: It was, it was fun.
- 20:38Speaker 1: All right Time now here on the In-Wheel Time Car Talk talk show for Jeff's Motor Minute.
- 20:43Speaker 2: And Mike's leading me into it.
- 20:44Speaker 2: With the fall, everybody, school is about to start.
- 20:47Speaker 2: In fact, there's some places that school has started.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So I want to bring this to your attention as summer ends.
- 20:54Speaker 2: You got school zones.
- 20:55Speaker 2: You've got to slow down in the school zones.
- 20:58Speaker 2: School zones are designed for a reason they're to protect the students.
- 21:01Speaker 2: You got to obey the speed limits, mike, and you got to obey the signs.
- 21:04Speaker 2: You've got to eliminate your distractions because it's very, very important you don't want to be part of a tragedy in a school zone.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Watch for the school buses.
- 21:12Speaker 2: When that little red flag comes out, you stop.
- 21:14Speaker 2: You don't try to pass a school bus.
- 21:16Speaker 2: So all of this is important for coming into the fall season.
- 21:20Speaker 2: You've got August and September, and I know school starts here in a couple of weeks in Houston in September.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I know school starts here in a couple of weeks in Houston.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Be mindful of the folks and the little ones that drive their little bikes to school.
- 21:29Speaker 2: They have the crosswalk right away as well.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Plan ahead.
- 21:33Speaker 2: If you know you're going through a school zone, don't rush through.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Take your time or find an alternate route.
- 21:39Speaker 2: If you know you go through there every day, fine, maybe another little back road or another little side street, but it's going to be all over.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Find maybe another little back road or another little side street, but it's going to be all over.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Be careful, the fines are very, very hefty.
- 21:49Speaker 2: They're very hefty, yeah, they are, and if you get it, we might even send mike to your house to give you the ticket.
- 21:52Speaker 2: We don't know that so we're going to do that.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Uh, remember, it's your family, the families that are out there, so be very, very careful in school zones.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I see it, you know, I shake my head at some of these people going to work every day and they know, they're in there going through a school zone, so be careful, it's starting.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Don't be that guy.
- 22:11Speaker 2: That's my Motor Minute.
- 22:13Speaker 1: You know, I've heard that most of my life Don't be that guy.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And look what happened to me.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I think the waiter told you that last night.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Don't be that guy, Blanca.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Alright time now for this hour's car review.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I had a chance to drive.
- 22:23Speaker 1: That's not a good one, blanca Blanca.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Yeah, all right Time now for this hour's car review.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I had a chance to drive the 2024 Acura Integra.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I don't get many Honda products and I was kind of excited about this and I thought, okay, it's an Integra, it's been around for a while.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Well, I did not realize.
- 22:40Speaker 1: But they make a little hot rod version of this.
- 22:43Speaker 1: They do Called and they make a little hot rod version of this.
- 22:46Speaker 1: They do Called the.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Well, there's several the base, the A-spec and the A-spec with tech, and then the Type S.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I had the Type S.
- 22:54Speaker 1: All right, it's a hot rod.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Compact four-door hatchback, four seats in this thing.
- 22:59Speaker 1: So put your mind kind of in a smaller version of a hot rod.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Mustang Exterior changes from last model year.
- 23:07Speaker 1: This is an all-new trim level for 2024.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Edgy overall design with an aggressive front-end styling.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Lower rocker and side creases in the doors gives it a sporty look.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Small spoiler on the hatch and three exhaust outlets Not two, not four, but three, right smack dab in the middle.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Black rear bumper with arrow on the lower valance.
- 23:35Speaker 1: This particular one had the optional copper wheels, 19 inches.
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's a $2,100 option and boy does it really stand out on that blue car that I had.
- 23:45Speaker 1: The blue that I had was like that, but it had the copper wheels on it Cool.
- 23:50Speaker 1: What could use improvement?
- 23:52Speaker 1: Nothing.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Great looking, sporty, hot hatch Interior highlights easy shifting six speed and a nice knob.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Cool, you got to have a nice knob.
- 24:03Speaker 1: You do Always good to have a nice knob you do.
- 24:06Speaker 1: It's always good to have a nice knob.
- 24:08Speaker 1: It is, it is.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I'll just leave it at that.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Let's see I've got my mind in that.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I'll stop the video for you.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Yeah, please do that.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Really nice styled, upscale interior elements throughout the cabin, easy to use and understand.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Controls, honeycomb air vents add to that racy look and I really did like them.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I've never seen them in another car.
- 24:36Speaker 1: The air vents and the dashboard.
- 24:38Speaker 1: They're honeycombed and they make them stand out.
- 24:43Speaker 1: They're kind of a brushed silver Cargo trunk room 24.3 cubic feet.
- 24:48Speaker 1: So the storage area back there behind the back seat kills it.
- 24:52Speaker 1: You fold down the back seat and it makes it really big.
- 24:55Speaker 1: What I liked about it lots of storage cubbies throughout the cabin.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I did like that folding second rear seat.
- 25:03Speaker 1: It's got a smallish, a 9-inch infotainment screen, but it kind of fits the smallish interior because it is.
- 25:11Speaker 1: It's a small car Two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with drumroll please.
- 25:18Speaker 1: 320 horsepower, 320.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Torque 310 pound-feet of torque Wow.
- 25:25Speaker 1: That's why I kind of did the comparison with the mustang, because the mustang is about, like their four-cylinder, about 300 horsepower, which is a lot.
- 25:32Speaker 1: The advantage that this has is that it's fairly lightweight because it's a much smaller car.
- 25:36Speaker 3: That's what I was going to say there can't be much weight to it.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Right Six-speed manual transmission, and that was the smoothest shifting transmission I have had in a long long time.
- 25:46Speaker 1: 21 miles per gallon city is what it's rated, 28 miles on the highway for a combined of 24.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I got 25.7 miles per gallon over 356 miles.
- 25:57Speaker 1: What I liked about it?
- 25:58Speaker 1: The balance of power, performance and comfort.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Nothing could use improvement.
- 26:04Speaker 1: I think that this is a hit.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Now, the base price, the base trim price, is $52,995.
- 26:11Speaker 1: It's not cheap.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Price is tested $55,971.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Now, if you just want to get into an Acura Integra, 31.8 will get you going.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Now, as far as comparisons are concerned, let's talk about the Honda Civic Type R.
- 26:26Speaker 1: That's its cousin.
- 26:27Speaker 1: It starts at 44, 795.
- 26:30Speaker 1: The Audi A3 starts at 40, 975.
- 26:35Speaker 1: The BMW 2 Series Grand Coupe $49,295.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Uh-oh, and I had to throw in the Golf R, the VW Golf R $45,665.
- 26:48Speaker 1: And that is my review of the 2024 Acura Integra A-Spec with Tech Type S.
- 26:57Speaker 2: You know, when you had it I didn't get in that one.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I didn't go for a ride in it with you or anything, or didn't get in it.
- 27:02Speaker 2: But the car is nice.
- 27:03Speaker 3: I like it.
- 27:03Speaker 1: It really is.
