- Hey, welcome to VoraPrep Audio. Alright, let's talk about something that can really throw you for a loop on exam day. Picture this: you're cruising through the CIA exam, feeling good, and then you hit a question that references something like "IPPF Performance Standard 2400." And your heart just sinks for a second. Because you've been studying the new 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards, or GIAS. You know the new structure—Domains, Guiding Principles. You haven't memorized a bunch of four-digit numbers from the old framework. So you think, "Is this an old question? Am I supposed to know this?" It's a moment of panic. Here's the good news. It's not a trick question. The Institute of Internal Auditors, the IIA, has been very clear that you will see legacy terms during this transition period. And they’ve also been clear that you won't be penalized for terminology differences. So that moment of panic? We're going to turn that into a moment where you calmly nod, see right through the old label, and grab some easy points. The best way to think about this is like a new operating system on your computer. Let's say you just upgraded from an old version of Windows to the latest one. The core functions are all still there, right? Saving a file, opening a web browser, sending an email... those things don't change. What *does* change is the user interface. The old International Professional Practices Framework, the IPPF, was like the old operating system with its numbered menu system—the 1000 series, the 2000 series. The new GIAS is like the modern OS, with a clean, icon-based dashboard organized into Domains and Principles. On the exam, your job is to recognize the underlying function—like "save file"—not to have memorized the old menu path to get there. So, how do we translate? It’s actually pretty simple when you think about the big picture. The old framework had what they called "Attribute Standards." That was the 1000 series. These were all about the *characteristics* of the internal audit function and the auditors themselves. Think purpose, ethics, independence. In the new GIAS, these concepts haven't gone away; they've just been integrated into the first three Domains. So, Domain I is the Purpose of Internal Auditing, Domain II is Ethics and Professionalism, and Domain III is all about Governing the Internal Audit Function. That's where all those old "attribute" ideas now live. Then you had the "Performance Standards," the 2000 series. If the attribute standards were about *who* you are, the performance standards were about *what you do*—how you actually conduct the audit work. Planning the engagement, gathering evidence, communicating results. And you can probably guess where this is going. This now maps directly to Domains IV and V in GIAS: Managing the Internal Audit Function and Performing Internal Audit Services. So if you get a question that mentions an old performance standard about managing audit resources, you just think, "Okay, that's about *doing the work*... that's Domain IV, Managing the Internal Audit Function." See? You're just translating the concept. The other little pieces, like the old Implementation Standards for assurance versus advisory work, have been replaced by what are called Topical Requirements. This is actually a great evolution because now we have much more specific guidance for things like cybersecurity audits or fraud investigations. And the old 10 Core Principles have been expanded and woven into the 15 more detailed Guiding Principles that are really the backbone of the new standards. It's an upgrade, not a total reinvention. Now, let's talk about how to apply this when you're staring at a question. The CIA exam loves scenario-based questions. They want to see if you can apply these concepts, not just spit back definitions. You’ll see questions asking for the best action to take, or which principle is being violated, or which part of a framework like COSO or the Three Lines Model is at play. So here is a simple, four-step process to tackle any question that uses old IPPF terms. First, just isolate the core principle. Read the question and ask yourself, what is this *really* about? Is it independence? Objectivity? Due professional care? Planning? Communication? Find that fundamental audit concept. Second, ignore the legacy label. That old number, "IPPF Standard 1110" or "2310" or whatever it is... just mentally cross it out. It's just there for context. It is non-essential information. It’s noise. Third, translate that core principle to its home in the new GIAS framework. You've already identified the concept is, say, organizational independence. You know that lives squarely in Domain III: Governing the Internal Audit Function. Specifically, it's about Guiding Principle 7. Making that quick mental connection orients you in the current standards. And finally, Step Four: select the best audit action. Now that you're clear on the principle and its modern context, you can evaluate the answer choices. The right answer will be the one that best demonstrates that principle according to the new 2024 standards. Let's walk through an example. Say the exam asks: *"Which of the following reporting structures best demonstrates conformance with IPPF Standard 1110 regarding organizational independence?"* Okay, step one: Isolate the core principle. Easy. The question is all about organizational independence. Step two: Ignore the legacy label. That "IPPF Standard 1110"? We don't care about the number. We just see it as a flag for the concept of independence. Step three: Translate to GIAS. Organizational independence... that's a cornerstone of governing the audit function. It belongs in Domain III, and it's all about making sure the Chief Audit Executive, the CAE, reports functionally to the board. Step four: Analyze the options. Now we look at the choices. The best answer, the one that truly shows independence, will be the one where the CAE reports *functionally to the board* or its audit committee, and then maybe administratively to the CEO. The most common trap here is an answer choice where the CAE reports functionally to the CFO. A lot of people fall for this. The CFO is a critical partner, of course, but for true independence, the audit function cannot have its scope, its budget, or its findings filtered or influenced by the very management it's supposed to be auditing. Functional reporting *must* go to the board. So you'd pick the option that shows that direct line. The biggest mistake you can make studying for this is trying to create a massive, detailed spreadsheet mapping every single old standard number to its new home in GIAS. Please, do not waste your time doing that. It's a memorization trap. The exam is testing your understanding of timeless audit principles, not your ability to be a historian of the IIA's numbering system. Focus on the *why* behind the standards. Here's a little mental model to help you on exam day. Just think A-B-C. A is for Assess the Ask. What's the fundamental audit principle being tested? B is for Bypass the Buzzword. Ignore that old standard number. It's just noise. And C is for Choose the Concept. Select the answer that best reflects that core, enduring principle as we understand it today in GIAS 2024. So when you're in the exam and you see a term like "Performance Standards," your internal monologue should just be: "Okay, that's the old way of saying 'how we do the audit work.' Now, what's the actual question about? Planning? Evidence? Let me focus on that." You immediately shift from the outdated term to the real concept being tested. So to wrap up, you're going to see a mix of old and new terms. Don't let it throw you. Just focus on the underlying principle. Remember that high-level mapping: old Attribute Standards are about the *who*—now in Domains I, II, and III. Old Performance Standards were about the *how*—now in Domains IV and V. Use that simple four-step process to break down the question, and avoid the trap of trying to memorize a bunch of old numbers. If you want to practice this with real exam-style questions that mix and match terminology, that's exactly what we've built at VoraPrep.
