- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 141, Psalm
- 0:20141, and this is a Psalm of David.
- 0:25Let's read together, beginning in verse #1 Yahweh, I call on
- 0:30you. Hurry to help me.
- 0:32Listen to My voice when I call on you.
- 0:34May my prayer be set before you as incense, the raising of My
- 0:39hands as the evening offering. Yahweh, Set up a guard from my
- 0:44mouth. Keep watch at the door of my
- 0:46lips. Do not let my heart turn to any
- 0:49evil thing or perform wicked acts with evil doers.
- 0:53Do not let me feast on their delicacies.
- 0:56Let the righteous one strike me. It is an act of faithful love.
- 1:00Let him rebuke me. It is oil for my head.
- 1:04Let me not refuse it. Even now.
- 1:07My prayer is against the evil acts of the wicked.
- 1:10When their rulers will be thrown off the sides of a Cliff, the
- 1:14people will listen to my words, for they are pleasing.
- 1:18As when 1 plows and breaks up the soil, turning up rocks, so
- 1:22our bones have been shattered at the mouth of the grave.
- 1:26But my eyes look to you, Yahweh. My Lord, I seek refuge.
- 1:31I seek refuge in you. Do not let me die.
- 1:34Protect me from the trap they have set for me, and from the
- 1:37snares of evildoers. Let the wicked fall into their
- 1:41own Nets while I pass by safely. Here David has a prayer for
- 1:48protection from both sin and sinners, and it begins in verses
- 1:541 and 2 by saying this, God, I need you to help me out, I am
- 1:59calling to you. I am in need of divine
- 2:02assistance. He says, listen to me when I am
- 2:05calling to you. And then I love what he says in
- 2:09verse #2 He says, May my prayer be set before you as incense,
- 2:15the raising of my hands as the evening.
- 2:17Offering incense and the daily offerings were things that
- 2:23regularly happened in the worship of God.
- 2:26And David says here that he wants his prayer to go up as
- 2:31regularly and as often to God as the incense is within the place
- 2:37of God's worship. That he says, Lord, all of the
- 2:41time this incense is here and it is a reminder both of your
- 2:45presence. It is a sweet smell that is
- 2:50pleasing to you. And he says, God, I want my
- 2:52prayers to you to be pleasing to you and to be regular, that it's
- 2:57just constant that I am before your face seeking your will and
- 3:03your your aid in my life. I think of what Paul tells the
- 3:09Thessalonikan Church in First Thessalonians 5 where he says
- 3:12pray without ceasing. Don't stop praying.
- 3:17And I think there's a a song by the the Christian musician
- 3:23Matthew West that has that title Don't Stop Praying for My Life.
- 3:28How often do I treat prayer not like this?
- 3:35Like when you think about your prayer life, is it something
- 3:38that you are constantly giving to God?
- 3:40Is it something that is regular and repeatable?
- 3:44Like the evening offering? There were no ifs, ands, or buts
- 3:48about it. Every single night there was an
- 3:51offering that was given in thanks and worship to God.
- 3:56And I want to have that mindset in my prayer life to say, Lord,
- 4:01it's going to be regular. And I'm thankful for the times
- 4:04in my life where my prayers have been regular.
- 4:09Very unfortunately for me, most of the time that's been when
- 4:13things are going horribly that I'm just having to constantly
- 4:17call out to God to go Lord. There's a whole new thing now,
- 4:21new problem, new difficulty, new financial burden, new, you know,
- 4:26this or that. And I want to be faithful to
- 4:31always be praying to God, not just when things are going
- 4:34haywire, but when things are going good because God is
- 4:38worthy. He is the one that needs to be
- 4:40called on in times of trouble, but He's also the God who is
- 4:44worthy to be thanked when everything is going well.
- 4:48He's the one that I can continue to call on to go, God, would you
- 4:52not lead me into temptation, not lead me into, if you will, the
- 4:56test, but deliver me from the evil when I don't want to have
- 5:00to go into that moment of having to choose between, you know,
- 5:04ultimate good and ultimate evil. You think of Adam and Eve,
- 5:08they're in the garden, they encounter Satan and they have
- 5:11this choice of listen to God or eat the fruit and they choose to
- 5:14eat the fruit. Or you can think about Abraham
- 5:17and as there's Isaac that's there and he has this test in
- 5:21this moment of am I going to listen to God even when I don't
- 5:26understand everything right now? Or am I going to choose to
- 5:29reject God's way Job in his life that he encounters ridiculous
- 5:37trials maybe unlike anything anyone else has ever experienced
- 5:41the like of again. And he has a choice of listening
- 5:45to Satan's temptation and cursing God and dying.
- 5:49Or he can believe that the God that allowed difficulty in his
- 5:54life is still good and is still to be trusted and obeyed and
- 5:57followed. And of course he chose the good
- 6:00way. But that's that's why when Jesus
- 6:04tells us we pray, don't lead us into temptation, but deliver us
- 6:09from evil. And so that's something we can
- 6:12certainly pray. Verses #3 through 6 he talks
- 6:17about what he is asking for the Lord to do in regards to his own
- 6:22sin within his life, that he recognized God.
- 6:25I am imperfect and so I need some things from you.
- 6:28Verse #3 Yahweh set up a guard for my mouth.
- 6:32Keep watch at the door of my lips.
- 6:35God, I tend to say things that I should not say and hear whether
- 6:41that would be like gossip or slandery things, whether that
- 6:46would be, you know, inappropriate or impure things
- 6:51that he would say. I don't know what all David's
- 6:55difficulties were, but he says, God, I need you.
- 6:58I'm, I'm so many of these Psalms that we've read come from David.
- 7:03David had a great way with words.
- 7:05I assume that that also had a downside that he was just quick
- 7:10to think. And so whatever he thought, man,
- 7:13he was saying it out loud. And he goes, God, I'm not
- 7:16supposed to be doing that. Like I'm saying things that I
- 7:18should not be saying. So God set up a guard that keeps
- 7:24watch over my lips that goes, Nope, David shouldn't say that.
- 7:28Absolutely not. Nope.
- 7:30That's not appropriate. That's not good.
- 7:32That's not uplifting. And I think for us, especially
- 7:36in 2026, this is a prayer that we can pray of God.
- 7:40We say and type things that we shouldn't.
- 7:45And so God, would you keep watch?
- 7:48I want you to be the guard that you go, Nope, Brian, you
- 7:52shouldn't say that. Nope, you shouldn't type that.
- 7:54Get your hand off the keyboard. You know, shut your lips.
- 7:57Now is not the time. Now is not the place.
- 8:01That is not a good thing to say, and I hope that you would pray
- 8:04that as well. God, would you set a watch, set
- 8:08up a guard from my mouth, and keep watch at the door of my
- 8:10lips. Verse #4 Do not let my heart
- 8:12turn to any evil thing, or perform wicked acts with evil
- 8:16doers. Do not let me feast on their
- 8:18delicacies. Don't let me have a love for
- 8:22what is wrong, because what is wrong can often be enticing.
- 8:26We can look at the fruit and go, man, that does look like a
- 8:29beautiful fruit. And it can make me wise to know
- 8:34both good and evil. And so yeah, I, I think I'll
- 8:37reach out and take it. No, let's not let our hearts be
- 8:41tilted towards doing what's wrong.
- 8:45It may look temporarily appealing, but the long term
- 8:50fruits and results of sin is death and destruction and
- 8:55separation and a ruining of everything that we encounter in
- 9:00our lives. And so here this is David's
- 9:02prayer of God. Don't let my heart start going
- 9:06somewhere that then my feet follow.
- 9:10Verse #5 Let the righteous one strike me.
- 9:12It is an act of faithful love. Let him rebuke me.
- 9:15It is oil for my head. Let me not refuse it.
- 9:19Even now. My prayer is against the evil
- 9:21acts of the wicked. Here David says there is
- 9:26wonderful joy and safety and kindness in someone telling me
- 9:34when I am in sin. Here he says when the righteous
- 9:37one strikes me, it is an act of faithful love.
- 9:40It's literally someone hitting David and going, you numbskull.
- 9:45You should not have asked about who the woman that was bathing.
- 9:52You should not have asked about who that was like that was
- 9:55wrong. And also, she is the wife of one
- 9:59of your top officials and one of your top, you know, officials,
- 10:04officers in the army. And her grandfather is one of
- 10:09your counselors. And so you should absolutely not
- 10:12do that. Or you have Nathan that at the
- 10:14end of the whole fiasco with Bathsheba and Uriah that he
- 10:21tells David in a story about evil and wrong.
- 10:24He says you are that man. You are the man in the story.
- 10:29And so here David says it's a good thing for us when someone
- 10:34tells us that we are wrong, that we are in sin, that we have
- 10:38violated God's law. That is not a normal way for us
- 10:44to view that we get self-righteous.
- 10:48We go, no, listen, I was fine to say that because they or well, I
- 10:55just really wanted to or it's not that bad or does God really
- 11:01care if those are like excuses that we give, but it is a
- 11:07valuable thing to us when we are called out on our sin.
- 11:11Who have you given access to in your life that they know that
- 11:16they can tell you when you have messed up?
- 11:19If you don't have someone in your life right now that you
- 11:22have explicitly given access to to do that for you, I encourage
- 11:27you like literally as soon as you're done with this episode,
- 11:30do that. Text someone and be like, hey, I
- 11:34I realize I'm not always perfect and I need someone that will let
- 11:39me know when I'm making mistakes.
- 11:42I am giving you permission and asking for you to call me out
- 11:48when you notice stuff with me as a pastor there.
- 11:53There are people that I talked with that when they're told of
- 11:57what the Bible says, man, they embrace it.
- 12:00They go, yeah, that's how I'm going to live my life.
- 12:02I love being able to interact with those people.
- 12:05One of the greatest heart breaks that I've had as a pastor is
- 12:10when I've talked with people about sin and they choose to
- 12:15just continue in it and just kind of like shun and shut out
- 12:20people in their life that spoke truth to them, especially truth
- 12:23spoken in love. It's one thing if we're if we're
- 12:27a jerk to people when we call out they're sin or they're
- 12:30wrongdoing, we shouldn't do that.
- 12:32But what we should do is in love and care and wanting for that
- 12:36person to experience the fullest life that God has for them, that
- 12:40we want them to see where there are some blind spots in their
- 12:44life right now. And so David says, God, this is
- 12:46what I want. I want to be able to have people
- 12:49speaking into my life. I'll tell you guys, for
- 12:53literally anyone that is watching this, listening to
- 12:57this, you have permission to speak that into my life.
- 13:01You're like, well, listen, Brian, you know, I'm I'm not,
- 13:04I'm not a pastor, I'm not an elder.
- 13:08You know, I'm not your spouse, you know, do I really have that?
- 13:12No, no, you are my brother or sister in Christ.
- 13:16And so the Holy Spirit of God lives inside of you.
- 13:19And here's what I'm not saying. If you have some, you know,
- 13:23comment about a non Bible thing, a a non character thing, if
- 13:29you're like, listen, I think you would look so much better in
- 13:32blue shirts than in green shirts.
- 13:34And so that is me, you know, being real with you.
- 13:37No, that's not the kind of thing I'm talking about.
- 13:40You see any character things, you go, Brian, you're really
- 13:42angry. God, Brian, you're really proud
- 13:47man. What a hopefully not Freudian
- 13:50slip, as they would say. I'm used to when I'm talking
- 13:54through some of the things, you know, saying God, I, I need
- 13:57this. And so I slipped back into
- 13:59freezing it that way. But you have access into to
- 14:04speak into my life to go. Hey, I see that there's pride.
- 14:07I see that there is, you know, wickedness.
- 14:11I I see that there is anger and intemperance, you know, whatever
- 14:16it is, because I want to be open and accountable with God's
- 14:22people. Because as that happens, I get
- 14:26to grow and learn and become more like Jesus.
- 14:29And that's the whole point of why I exist is to become more
- 14:33like Jesus Christ. And so that's something that I I
- 14:36want for my own life. Now, maybe if you have like
- 14:39character things, you don't have to throw it in the comments of a
- 14:43YouTube video or Facebook video and be like, here's all of the
- 14:46sins I see in you and I'll be like, oh, Dang.
- 14:49But certainly reach out via message, text, phone call,
- 14:53whatever. Because I want to realize I'm
- 14:58imperfect. I am hopefully around people,
- 15:02speaking to people, regularly communicating with people,
- 15:06whether via, you know, text, call, social media something
- 15:11that then they feel as though I am not unassailable, that they
- 15:17don't think that I think I have it all together.
- 15:21I need the body of Christ to help build me up into who God
- 15:25wants me to be. And I hope that that is your
- 15:27prayer as well. I apologize.
- 15:29That was a massive rabbit trail. But in verse #6 David says when
- 15:36they're rulers, these are the wicked rulers, those that are
- 15:42taking place in evil acts. He says when their rulers will
- 15:45be thrown off the sides of a Cliff, the people will listen to
- 15:49my words, for they are pleasing. He says when wicked rulers are
- 15:55out, then people are more apt to listen to good rulers.
- 16:00This is another one of those things again and again.
- 16:03We do not read in scripture that only pastors need to be godly
- 16:10people. Every single person is called to
- 16:13be godly and if you are ungodly, it will cause a cancer, a a sin,
- 16:20cancer in wherever you are, whether that is in government,
- 16:24whether that is in your workplace.
- 16:27So each of us ought to personally seek to have a
- 16:32vibrant relationship with God in which we are seeking to become
- 16:35more and more like Jesus, that we want to become godly.
- 16:39And then when we get our choices of who we pick as leaders, maybe
- 16:46even if you're able to pick, you know, you have two jobs and
- 16:49they're mostly identical, but you know, the one has a
- 16:53legitimate born again Christian that through the way that they
- 16:57live their life, not just through what they call
- 17:00themselves, but the way that they live their life, you know
- 17:02that they're really a Jesus follower.
- 17:05Choose the workplace that has a a Jesus follower because there
- 17:11you have the blessing of God as his character and his spirit is
- 17:16moving and working in people that are leading and guiding in
- 17:20direction. And so it is even with our
- 17:24elected officials if we have the choice between all right, here's
- 17:27these two people and I hate the two party system, by the way, I
- 17:31don't know if that that's come up yet.
- 17:33Anyways, I'm going to go way too far.
- 17:35Suffice it to say, godly rulers good, ungodly rulers bad verse
- 17:42#7 As we get here to the end, as when 1 plows and breaks up the
- 17:47soil, turning up rocks, so our bones have been scattered at the
- 17:51mouth of the grave. He says, God, our nation has
- 17:54been through it and we have died.
- 17:58There have been so many deaths that have occurred here.
- 18:02It's the mouth of Sheol. It's the mouth of the grave.
- 18:06And so God, we have just been the the phrase literally in
- 18:11verse 7. It's we have been plowed through
- 18:15as a people, as a nation. And so God, we need good rulers.
- 18:19I need you to help me be right and good, that I would not say
- 18:24bad things, that I would not do bad things.
- 18:27We have the wicked rulers out now, God.
- 18:29We don't want to go that path anymore and said now we want to
- 18:32go the good path. And so God, I'm asking for your
- 18:34help with that. Verse 8, my eyes look to you,
- 18:38Yahweh. My Lord, I seek refuge in you.
- 18:41Do not let me die. Protect me from the trap that
- 18:44they have set for me and from the snares of evildoers.
- 18:47Let the wicked fall into their own Nets while I pass safely.
- 18:53He says, Lord, if I'm going to make it through, I have to have
- 18:57you. And for you and I today, if
- 18:59we're going to make it through life, if we're going to make it
- 19:01through 2026, it is only going to come by the person and work
- 19:06of Jesus Christ and his Holy Spirit moving and working in US.
- 19:10And so me, we echo with David. God, protect us, keep a watch
- 19:15over us, hear our cry, help us to walk with you.
- 19:19Help us to not go evil or wrong direction.
- 19:22Help us to go your direction. And man, so much great, so many
- 19:28great things from Psalm 141. I hope it was an encouragement
- 19:32to you. I know it was a little here,
- 19:33there and everywhere at various points, but if you have any
- 19:37questions or want to talk at any time, I would love to hear from
- 19:41you. Always love to to be able to
- 19:43hear when people are listening to the podcast, if there's
- 19:48things that are helpful for them as they're going through.
- 19:52Maybe if there's something that I sometimes do on the podcast
- 19:56that's really helpful to you, let me know that so I can do
- 19:59more of it. Or if there's something that I
- 20:01do that you guys are like, listen Brian, whenever you're
- 20:03doing this totally throws me off.
- 20:04I just have to turn the thing off.
- 20:06Let me know that too. And that would be a help to me
- 20:09as I seek to be a blessing through Tabernacle Talk.
- 20:12Thanks for tuning in. See you next episode.
