- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Good Morning, Big Blue Nation. This is not Michael Bennett.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Doctor John Plong here substituting for Michael. He is in transit.
- 0:20Speaker 2: He will be back tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to
- 0:23Speaker 2: these next couple of hours together with my co host,
- 0:27Speaker 2: Justin Caylin. Justin, how are you doing this morning?
- 0:31Speaker 1: I am doing fantastic. I didn't know what type of
- 0:34Speaker 1: hoping we were gonna get, so I'm really excited that
- 0:36Speaker 1: you chose to just use Michael's open that because that's
- 0:39Speaker 1: what I always do. If I'm covering a show for somebody,
- 0:42Speaker 1: I opened the show the same way they do, so
- 0:44Speaker 1: I was glad to hear you do that.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Interest the full disclosure, you and I we don't know
- 0:50Speaker 2: each other. In fact, we just talked together for the
- 0:53Speaker 2: first time just a few minutes ago. What do you
- 0:57Speaker 2: think of Michael Bennett handing the rings of the show
- 1:01Speaker 2: over to two guys who may have absolutely no chemistry together,
- 1:07Speaker 2: They have nothing in common together, who know nothing about
- 1:10Speaker 2: each other. What can possibly go wrong? I'm thinking awkward? Right, No, I'm.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Thinking he just trusts us both and knows that we're
- 1:20Speaker 1: both friendly people. We can talk to pretty well anyone,
- 1:24Speaker 1: at least I know that about myself. I'm assuming you're
- 1:27Speaker 1: probably the same way. But no, I think it'll be fine.
- 1:30Speaker 1: It's just a little sports talk radio, no need.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I am a lot different from Michael. You probably know
- 1:35Speaker 2: that not many people are like Michael Bennett. He's very loud,
- 1:41Speaker 2: he's very opinionated. I'm a little bit more reserved, hopefully
- 1:46Speaker 2: a little bit more organized. So I've got a list
- 1:48Speaker 2: of topics we can go ahead and run down here today.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to the listeners interacting, calling, in, texting,
- 1:57Speaker 2: in giving me there their opinions on a lot of
- 2:01Speaker 2: these topics. I want to make sure I have this
- 2:03Speaker 2: text number ride. It's five oh two four one four
- 2:07Speaker 2: fourteen fifty. Is that correct?
- 2:09Speaker 1: Correct? Nil?
- 2:10Speaker 2: All right, all right, let's go ahead and make Michael
- 2:13Speaker 2: mad this morning. Let's talk about something that he absolutely despises,
- 2:17Speaker 2: and that is the sport of soccer.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Taylor Swift, well that too.
- 2:23Speaker 2: We can go ahead and defer to her a little
- 2:25Speaker 2: bit later in the show. But World Cup soccer, And
- 2:29Speaker 2: first of all, another point of disclosure, I am not
- 2:32Speaker 2: a big soccer fan either. In fact, I had probably
- 2:35Speaker 2: watched more soccer this past month than I have in
- 2:39Speaker 2: taught my entire life combined. You know what I did
- 2:43Speaker 2: in my previous life, right, I was a dentist. I
- 2:46Speaker 2: was an orthodonist. I worked with my hands, manual dexterity.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Hand eye coordination extremely extremely important to me in any
- 2:56Speaker 2: sport which does not let you use your hands to
- 2:59Speaker 2: be a part of I'm not gonna be a big,
- 3:02Speaker 2: big supporter of. But having said that, how great was
- 3:08Speaker 2: that match yesterday between Argentina and England. I was enthralled.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And really the thing that's really jumped out at me
- 3:18Speaker 2: about this whole World Cup experience is a passion of
- 3:22Speaker 2: these international soccer fans. See that stadium filled Mercedes Benz
- 3:27Speaker 2: half Argentina half England fans, and then to see how
- 3:31Speaker 2: that game went down. It was boring at first. You know, soccer,
- 3:35Speaker 2: I say, always needs a heck of a lot more scoring.
- 3:38Speaker 2: But they didn't even have any shots on goal for
- 3:40Speaker 2: the first thirty minutes during that particular game, right, it
- 3:44Speaker 2: was only afterwards England scores go up one to nothing,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you think they've got it, and then Argentina comes back. Man,
- 3:53Speaker 2: how exciting was that? What was your take? You're a
- 3:55Speaker 2: big soccer Officiondo oh, you actually know something about the sport.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Tell me the nuances of what you saw going on.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So you're right in saying that I am a huge
- 4:05Speaker 1: soccer guy. I always have been. That's kind of the
- 4:08Speaker 1: German in me. I'm half German, so my grandpa when
- 4:10Speaker 1: I was a kid, we would always watch Bundesliga and whatnot.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But so I've always been a big soccer guy, and
- 4:16Speaker 1: I have watched honestly, probably ninety six percent of this world.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Wow.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I have seen dang near every single game.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's been appointment television for me. So I had an
- 4:28Speaker 1: interesting interesting watch yesterday. So I was at I worked
- 4:32Speaker 1: for another radio station over in Cordon. I was actually
- 4:35Speaker 1: there yesterday watching this game, and my boss is doing
- 4:38Speaker 1: her job and I'm just watching the game, not even
- 4:42Speaker 1: not doing much of anything. And all of a sudden,
- 4:45Speaker 1: Argentina scores that goal in the eighty fifth minute and
- 4:47Speaker 1: I lose it. I'm like, whoa, that was awesome. It
- 4:50Speaker 1: was a beautiful strike. I mean the distance in which
- 4:53Speaker 1: he took that shot for it to go in was
- 4:55Speaker 1: absolutely incredible. And then for them just seven minutes later
- 5:00Speaker 1: to get that next goal when it looked like Argentina
- 5:03Speaker 1: was dead in the water, and they find a way
- 5:05Speaker 1: to win it. I mean, that's what champions do, right.
- 5:07Speaker 1: They're the defending champs. They're the defending champs for a reason.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And I think you saw a flash of that why
- 5:12Speaker 1: yesterday in that game against England.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Now, Argentina, they have struggled throughout this tournament. Some people
- 5:18Speaker 2: say that they're lucky to actually be there, but it
- 5:20Speaker 2: looks like that the cream is always going to be
- 5:22Speaker 2: rising to the top. Here. Now here's something that I
- 5:26Speaker 2: want you to set me straight on. It looked like
- 5:29Speaker 2: that after England scored, they kind of took their foot
- 5:34Speaker 2: off the gas offensively. It was almost like they turned
- 5:38Speaker 2: into Brad White's defense, you know, the bend but don't break.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Let's just prevent disaster from happening. And because they lost
- 5:47Speaker 2: that offensive punch, they allowed Argentina to kind of control
- 5:51Speaker 2: the ball. Am I correct in saying that they blew
- 5:55Speaker 2: that game by the way they reverted?
- 5:57Speaker 1: No, you're a thousand percent correct, And you see that
- 5:59Speaker 1: a lot in You see it across to other sports
- 6:02Speaker 1: as well. I always say, play to win, don't play
- 6:05Speaker 1: to not lose, and it kind of feels like in soccer,
- 6:08Speaker 1: more times than not, when you get a goal lead
- 6:11Speaker 1: or a couple goal lead, you get very passive and
- 6:14Speaker 1: you play to not lose, and you you do get
- 6:17Speaker 1: less aggressive offensively because you you put more emphasis on, hey,
- 6:21Speaker 1: let's let's just not let them get behind us defensively,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and there's no way we can lose this game. But
- 6:26Speaker 1: more times than not that doesn't work out. And I
- 6:29Speaker 1: think that was a perfect example of that yesterday.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Where do we go from here? I've been following your
- 6:36Speaker 2: sports predictions and they are not good.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Not good.
- 6:39Speaker 2: No whoever you end up picking, I think I'm gonna
- 6:41Speaker 2: go the opposite way. But now you've got Spain, you've
- 6:45Speaker 2: got Argentina. What's your pick?
- 6:49Speaker 1: You're gonna be on Spain because I'm gonna take Argentina.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I just think with the with Messi in his last
- 6:54Speaker 1: World Cup, it kind of feels like destiny that he
- 6:58Speaker 1: has to win it, right. I'm not clamoring for conspiracy
- 7:02Speaker 1: theorists here that FIFA is setting us all up, but
- 7:05Speaker 1: it does just feel like Messi has to get it
- 7:07Speaker 1: done in his final World Cup. So I'm gonna go Argentina.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So if you're a smart betting man take Spain.
- 7:13Speaker 2: What are some of the things, some of the specifics
- 7:15Speaker 2: that those of us who are just casual soccer fans
- 7:19Speaker 2: need to key in on early to see how that
- 7:22Speaker 2: game is playing out.
- 7:25Speaker 1: So for me, it's it's gonna be very similar to
- 7:28Speaker 1: what you saw with Spain and France. That game. I
- 7:31Speaker 1: look at more as a barometer of what we could
- 7:34Speaker 1: see in the final. Spain's defense is unbelievable. They've only
- 7:37Speaker 1: allowed one goal the entirety of this tournament, and that
- 7:40Speaker 1: was in their game against Belgium, who scored four against
- 7:43Speaker 1: the US. So Belgium's pretty high powered, but they're going against,
- 7:46Speaker 1: in my opinion, the best team in the entire world.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Last game against France, I thought France would win that
- 7:52Speaker 1: game three to one, two one. Somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 7:56Speaker 1: France did even threaten the back of the net. Yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and Bope got a shots on goal, but it was
- 8:02Speaker 1: never really anything scary for Spain. So if they can
- 8:05Speaker 1: rely on their defense, it's an interesting dichotomy of great
- 8:10Speaker 1: defense first, great offense. But Argentina also has a really
- 8:14Speaker 1: good defense, so I think it's gonna probably be pretty
- 8:16Speaker 1: low scoring one nothing. Maybe I could see a one
- 8:20Speaker 1: nothing game, maybe one to one, a game that goes
- 8:23Speaker 1: to penalties. That would be awesome. I'm a you don't
- 8:26Speaker 1: know this, but I'm a big penalty kick guy. Well
- 8:29Speaker 1: love when games go to penalties, as long as I
- 8:31Speaker 1: don't have a team that's involved.
- 8:34Speaker 2: I don't think there's anything more exciting in sports and
- 8:38Speaker 2: the penalty kick. Although from a strictly purest standpoint to me,
- 8:44Speaker 2: it's not the best way to settle a contest. True
- 8:48Speaker 2: is a very, very novel. But either way, everybody's going
- 8:52Speaker 2: to be tuned in. The world is going to be
- 8:54Speaker 2: tuned in. What is it Sunday three o'clock? All right?
- 8:59Speaker 2: I will even be two tuned in for a sport
- 9:01Speaker 2: that doesn't allow to use your hands.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Let me ask you this, how do you feel about
- 9:05Speaker 1: the third place game?
- 9:08Speaker 2: I hate it? I am yeah, I hated. Everything about
- 9:13Speaker 2: sports should be about passion. It should be about how
- 9:18Speaker 2: intense you are, the ability to want to win. You
- 9:21Speaker 2: see the reaction of all these fans when when their
- 9:24Speaker 2: team scores, they're crying, They're literally crying, they're jumping up
- 9:28Speaker 2: in joy. And when you're playing for something that, all right,
- 9:32Speaker 2: it's almost a consolation prize. It's that idea of that
- 9:35Speaker 2: consolation trophy. I am against it. No matter how much
- 9:39Speaker 2: you enjoy the sport, it's not one hundred percent. I'm
- 9:42Speaker 2: glad when they got rid of the third place place
- 9:45Speaker 2: game in the NCAA tournament because I thought that was
- 9:49Speaker 2: just absolutely horrible. The players didn't want to be there,
- 9:52Speaker 2: coaches didn't want to be there. The fans, some of
- 9:55Speaker 2: them enjoyed it. But by that time your team has lost.
- 9:59Speaker 2: How much much more passion can you throw into it?
- 10:02Speaker 2: I'm against it.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I'm kind of with you, But is there anything that
- 10:07Speaker 1: can be done to entice them to want to play
- 10:10Speaker 1: a third place game if it were to be brought back.
- 10:13Speaker 2: If you're talking about something like the Olympics, where there's
- 10:17Speaker 2: a an actual prize involved, So what could be comparable
- 10:23Speaker 2: to a prize? Well, money, you know, dangle some money
- 10:28Speaker 2: in front of the players and maybe they'll give it
- 10:31Speaker 2: a little bit more effort to try to put the
- 10:33Speaker 2: ball in the hoop. But overall, I am am against
- 10:38Speaker 2: anything that's outside the championships. Once you're gone, you're gone.
- 10:41Speaker 2: At the end of the season, only one team should
- 10:44Speaker 2: be smiling, Only one team should be happy only one
- 10:47Speaker 2: team should have won that last game.
- 10:49Speaker 1: But what about like the CBI and the n they
- 10:52Speaker 1: get to win their last.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Game consolation prizes In my mind, Truck, Yeah, participation trophies,
- 11:02Speaker 2: nothing more than that.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That's I don't know. I don't know why, but that
- 11:05Speaker 1: has been a big conversation on Big Excell across all
- 11:08Speaker 1: of our shows all week. Third place year.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Here's one thing. I did a book with the great
- 11:12Speaker 2: Derek Ramsey, quarterback of the UK nineteen seventy six, seventy seventeen.
- 11:18Speaker 2: That team went ten to one. They blitz through the
- 11:21Speaker 2: SEC undefeated. They'll probably be the only team in University
- 11:25Speaker 2: Kentucky football history to go through that conference undefeated. And
- 11:31Speaker 2: Derek told me something interesting. When he played in the NFL,
- 11:34Speaker 2: he played in two Super Bowls. There was one that
- 11:37Speaker 2: he won with the Raiders and the one that he
- 11:40Speaker 2: lost with the New England Patriots. Guess how many times
- 11:44Speaker 2: he's worn his Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots. Zero? Yeah, zero.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It's only winning the thing that counts. Everything else is
- 11:54Speaker 2: a participation trophy.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I don't know that I realized that the runners up
- 11:58Speaker 1: in the NFL gut rings.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah, if you played in the super Bowl, you get
- 12:03Speaker 2: a super Bowl.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a big thing. That's why you
- 12:07Speaker 2: hear a lot of these guys say, we're gonna make
- 12:09Speaker 2: it to the super Bowl. If we can just make
- 12:11Speaker 2: it to the super Bowl. Yea, all right, Tom, you
- 12:18Speaker 2: wanted to talk about lat of me. By the way,
- 12:21Speaker 2: I'm in a little bit of a disadvantage because I
- 12:23Speaker 2: don't have access to the texts. The text so if
- 12:29Speaker 2: we get anything, go ahead and read them and I'll
- 12:31Speaker 2: try to respond to you from that sort.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I do have one right off the jump. That's a
- 12:36Speaker 1: kind of an off topic question. But is it better
- 12:38Speaker 1: for a dentist to have small hands to be able
- 12:41Speaker 1: to fit into people's mouth? Weird question, I know, but
- 12:45Speaker 1: what hey, what the heck?
- 12:47Speaker 2: I think that does have something to do with it.
- 12:50Speaker 2: But nowadays, with all the technology that's out there, I
- 12:53Speaker 2: think it's more a matter of your eyes than your
- 12:56Speaker 2: hands themselves. They talk about eye coordination, but if you
- 12:59Speaker 2: can't see, then I don't care how much manual dexterity
- 13:03Speaker 2: you have, you're not going to be quite as efficient.
- 13:06Speaker 2: So now with all these eye loops, all this laser technology,
- 13:10Speaker 2: all this magnification that's out there. I think that's more
- 13:14Speaker 2: of an important question. But no, I'm glad to offer
- 13:18Speaker 2: any free dental advice on the show now. Word of caution,
- 13:23Speaker 2: I've been out of the net for about ten years,
- 13:27Speaker 2: so you'll have to take what I say with a
- 13:29Speaker 2: little bit of a grain grain of salt.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Pressure teeth twice a day in daily.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, that's exactly right. Nothing like world hygiene.
- 13:43Speaker 2: The The one thing that you did address also is
- 13:47Speaker 2: this idea of La Familia. Are you into that at all?
- 13:51Speaker 2: I know you're in Indiana fan, but this specifically has
- 13:55Speaker 2: been geared toward Kentucky and Louisville. I think that intent
- 14:00Speaker 2: was intentionally done, obviously to add a little bit of
- 14:03Speaker 2: interest to it, but I guess a little bit of
- 14:07Speaker 2: sense that this thing has lost some momentum over the
- 14:11Speaker 2: last year. The idea of this was great because this
- 14:16Speaker 2: is summertime. There's not a whole lot of time to
- 14:18Speaker 2: talk about this is our fix for summertime basketball. But unfortunately,
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'm not even going to be covering this game. My
- 14:27Speaker 2: schedule was a little bit unsettled when it first came in,
- 14:29Speaker 2: so I didn't put in for credentials, but I'll certainly
- 14:32Speaker 2: be tuned in. I'm interested to see how it goes.
- 14:35Speaker 2: But I was wondering, what do you think is the
- 14:38Speaker 2: general consensus of interest to something like this.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I think it was a lot higher a week ago,
- 14:46Speaker 1: if we're being honest, because with all the turmoil going
- 14:49Speaker 1: on with the Law Familiar team and how it's just
- 14:52Speaker 1: it's continued to fall apart. I mean, I do think
- 14:55Speaker 1: I love the fact that they put Louisville and Kentucky
- 14:58Speaker 1: together for that three series. That just that felt like
- 15:02Speaker 1: the smartest move to make because when you look at
- 15:04Speaker 1: the TVT the last handful of years, who's been what
- 15:07Speaker 1: games have been the most well attended. It's been La
- 15:10Speaker 1: Familiar and it's been the vill So it was it
- 15:12Speaker 1: felt like a no brainer if you're gonna change the
- 15:15Speaker 1: format just to throw those two teams together. And initially
- 15:19Speaker 1: I was really excited about this this series because both
- 15:22Speaker 1: teams I thought had built pretty respectable rosters with former players.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Both teams we were loaded with former players, and now
- 15:30Speaker 1: with all the changes going down with La Familiates, I
- 15:34Speaker 1: don't have the same type of feeling of excitement that
- 15:38Speaker 1: I did just like a week or maybe two weeks ago,
- 15:41Speaker 1: So that's been it's been tough to see. I know
- 15:44Speaker 1: all the Big Blue Nation fans on Twitter that I
- 15:47Speaker 1: that I follow, they are not been happy. They think
- 15:50Speaker 1: this team's gonna stink. They're not hopeful at all, and
- 15:53Speaker 1: that that's never fun, right, especially when you're going to
- 15:55Speaker 1: a game against your rival. Kentucky fans do not go
- 15:58Speaker 1: into games against Louisville think and that they're gonna lose.
- 16:01Speaker 1: So that's been really weird seeing that on Twitter, that
- 16:04Speaker 1: nobody believes in this team and how could you.
- 16:08Speaker 2: And I don't even know if they have enough people
- 16:11Speaker 2: to officially field a team as of yet. Isn't it
- 16:14Speaker 2: true that you need like seven guys, seven actual alumni
- 16:18Speaker 2: people to make the team official? And point of confession,
- 16:24Speaker 2: I am probably weird in the sense that I am
- 16:27Speaker 2: almost more a University of Kentucky basketball fan than I
- 16:32Speaker 2: am just a regular basketball fan. So the reason I
- 16:36Speaker 2: feel invested in Lafa Meilia is only because they have
- 16:40Speaker 2: alumni players back. You have to have played for the
- 16:44Speaker 2: University of Kentucky to make this interesting, to make this
- 16:47Speaker 2: a rooting interest for me. When they start throwing all
- 16:51Speaker 2: these other guys on here that I've rarely even heard
- 16:54Speaker 2: of that haven't played for UK over time. I think
- 16:58Speaker 2: that just kind of dilutes it. That cheapens the whole thing.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I want to see a roster completely of just guys
- 17:06Speaker 2: who have played for their respective team. So I think
- 17:08Speaker 2: that was the initial novelty of this entire tournament. And
- 17:13Speaker 2: when you take that away, I think you've taken away
- 17:16Speaker 2: a big, big portion of what made it popular to
- 17:19Speaker 2: a lot of fans.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Well, isn't Kentucky in kind of a unique position in
- 17:23Speaker 1: that regard because a lot of the guys that I
- 17:26Speaker 1: mentioned this on my show this morning, but a lot
- 17:27Speaker 1: of the guys that you had won on this team,
- 17:29Speaker 1: they're in the NBA, So a number of them they
- 17:33Speaker 1: can't play in this because they've got an actual basketball job.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So that part's been really tough to gather a team.
- 17:39Speaker 1: As it stands now, to answer your question, there are
- 17:42Speaker 1: six Kentucky guys so and you're right, you gotta have seven.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So I don't know what they do who they add
- 17:48Speaker 1: but from now until Saturday, but as it stands now,
- 17:51Speaker 1: you've got Khalil Whitney, Willie Caley Stein. Marcus Lee was
- 17:54Speaker 1: added yesterday Aaron Harrison, Archie Goodwin, and DeAndre Liggins. Those
- 17:59Speaker 1: are your of.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Now if all of them show, I guess coach John
- 18:05Speaker 2: Hood could go ahead and throw on a uniform and
- 18:08Speaker 2: be officially player coach. I mean that would work, wouldn't it.
- 18:13Speaker 1: We've seen that in the Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 2: That would supply all the officiality involved. Now. I don't
- 18:18Speaker 2: want him on the floor. I don't want him pulling
- 18:20Speaker 2: into Achilles or anything like that. Uh, but at least
- 18:25Speaker 2: it gets him into number seven. All right. I don't
- 18:28Speaker 2: know if it's time for a break or whatever. I'm
- 18:31Speaker 2: all right, I'll leave it up to you. But one
- 18:35Speaker 2: thing I did want to also address was we've got
- 18:37Speaker 2: next week coming up. We've got to talk a little
- 18:40Speaker 2: bit UK football University of Kentucky SEC media days, Will
- 18:45Speaker 2: Stein his inaugural appearance there. I want to ask the
- 18:50Speaker 2: listeners out there, what are let's let's just say, the
- 18:54Speaker 2: three biggest concerns or the three biggest scenes that you
- 18:57Speaker 2: are most interested in about the upcoming University of Kentucky
- 19:02Speaker 2: football season. To me, I think number one is pretty easy.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It's going to be how is will Stein going to
- 19:10Speaker 2: handle sitting in that big chair? We know he's good
- 19:14Speaker 2: at x's and o's. We know he can coach, we
- 19:17Speaker 2: know his role, his success as an offensive coordinator. It's different, though,
- 19:23Speaker 2: when you move from that OC position up into that
- 19:26Speaker 2: CEO chair where you're calling the shots, you're having to
- 19:30Speaker 2: deal with everything you're having to do offense and defense.
- 19:34Speaker 2: That's different. How is he going to do when the
- 19:37Speaker 2: bullets are flying, when the lights are on, when he's
- 19:40Speaker 2: on in the big stage. And I think this little
- 19:43Speaker 2: soar way into SEC media days will give us a
- 19:48Speaker 2: little good idea of how he's going to end up
- 19:51Speaker 2: handling all that pressure. I can't wait to see what
- 19:54Speaker 2: he does. I think he's I don't know if they
- 19:57Speaker 2: know the exact order, but I do know that he's
- 19:59Speaker 2: going to eire day one, and I think that's gonna
- 20:03Speaker 2: help him. I hope he's number one. I hope he's
- 20:05Speaker 2: first out of the gate.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it might be the only time Kentucky's number one
- 20:09Speaker 1: in the SEC. Boom roach.
- 20:15Speaker 2: If you've been a fan of Kentucky football, you know
- 20:17Speaker 2: that there have been very, very many years of futility.
- 20:21Speaker 2: And I hate myself for this. Every year May June,
- 20:26Speaker 2: I'm thinking to myself, realistic they're not going to be
- 20:29Speaker 2: any good. Schedule's too tough, competition's too great to have.
- 20:34Speaker 2: They really proved in themselves. You got this new coach.
- 20:37Speaker 2: But come July, come August football talking season. I somehow
- 20:43Speaker 2: convinced myself that they're gonna win two more games than
- 20:46Speaker 2: they actually do. I'm putting over and under at six
- 20:50Speaker 2: right now.
- 20:53Speaker 1: You're very old.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Now.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Realistically, I could see six and six because Will Stein's
- 20:58Speaker 1: gonna win a game or two that he should win.
- 21:00Speaker 1: He and I've told Michael this in the past. I
- 21:03Speaker 1: truly believe that the Kentucky will be in every game
- 21:06Speaker 1: this season, and I don't think they get murdered by
- 21:09Speaker 1: thirty forty points in any of these games. I really don't.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Well that certainly would that would be comforting because I
- 21:18Speaker 2: think Stein has a free pass this year. I think
- 21:22Speaker 2: he could probably win four games and people wouldn't be
- 21:27Speaker 2: really upset at all. This is a honeymoon season for him.
- 21:32Speaker 2: But on the other hand, if they end up losing
- 21:35Speaker 2: some of these games by thirty or forty points, that
- 21:38Speaker 2: may change things a little bit. But as long as
- 21:41Speaker 2: they stay competitive in all this, I think this is
- 21:44Speaker 2: one year where the one loss record will be thrown
- 21:47Speaker 2: out six wins. I do also think that's realistic, but
- 21:52Speaker 2: that also I think may end up being the ceiling
- 21:55Speaker 2: for this team. But if they can achieve that go
- 21:58Speaker 2: to a bowl game, that's a huge, huge win year
- 22:02Speaker 2: one out the gate. It sets momentum up for next year.
- 22:06Speaker 2: All this who Ron and raw Rah and everything that
- 22:12Speaker 2: he's done right during this preseason and being enthusiastic promoting
- 22:17Speaker 2: the program. That's just gonna snowball if he has a
- 22:20Speaker 2: very very good competitive year this year.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just nice to see excitement again within the
- 22:26Speaker 1: Kentucky football program because things that they've just gotten a
- 22:29Speaker 1: little too stale for under Mark Stoops and maybe fault
- 22:33Speaker 1: of him, maybe not, but either way, I thought a
- 22:36Speaker 1: decision needed to be made, and I was glad it was.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I was glad that will Stein is the guy they
- 22:40Speaker 1: brought in because it's a young guy that can grow
- 22:43Speaker 1: with this program, can grow the program to be one
- 22:46Speaker 1: of the better teams in the SEC year in and
- 22:49Speaker 1: year out. Look, it's possible. If you don't believe that,
- 22:52Speaker 1: look what two hundred miles to the north up in Bloomington, Indiana.
- 22:55Speaker 1: It can happen. It can absolutely happen.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Unfortunately, I think what happened with Indiana football is
- 23:01Speaker 2: the worst thing that could have happened to these middle
- 23:03Speaker 2: of the pack teams. Everybody now is thinking, if they
- 23:07Speaker 2: can do it, why can't we do it? Well? Number
- 23:11Speaker 2: one is they had obviously a very very great coach
- 23:15Speaker 2: and also a very very great quarterback associated with that,
- 23:19Speaker 2: which brings me to the second concern is how good
- 23:23Speaker 2: is Kenny Minchie actually going to be? We've seen this
- 23:27Speaker 2: movie before, somebody like Rock Vandergriff from Georgia who ate
- 23:33Speaker 2: for a very prestigious program, but he wasn't the starter,
- 23:38Speaker 2: and he wasn't the starter for a reason because he
- 23:40Speaker 2: got beat out by the starter. He wasn't as good.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Is Kenny Minchie gonna be that good? Everything that we've
- 23:47Speaker 2: heard so far talking season once again is yes, he is.
- 23:51Speaker 2: The Guy's got an arm, his accuracy is off the charts,
- 23:55Speaker 2: He's got the space in between his brains that's evidently
- 24:00Speaker 2: very high up there. He's a great leader, he checks
- 24:04Speaker 2: all these boxes, but we haven't seen him, and until
- 24:06Speaker 2: we see him, I think we need to kind of
- 24:09Speaker 2: hold those horses, pull the reins back a little bit,
- 24:13Speaker 2: because we know that how a team goes usually associated
- 24:16Speaker 2: with how the starting quarterback goes.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't disagree with anything you just said there. However,
- 24:21Speaker 1: the only difference between this year and what we've seen
- 24:24Speaker 1: in the past is now you've got kind of a
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'm hesitant to say this phrase, but you kind of
- 24:30Speaker 1: got a quarterback whisper as your head coach, right, I
- 24:33Speaker 1: mean he's Dante Moore up at Oregon was awesome the
- 24:36Speaker 1: past couple of years. I mean, Will Stein's worked with
- 24:38Speaker 1: some really, really good quarterbacks over the years, so he
- 24:41Speaker 1: knows what he's doing, at least from the offensive standpoint.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I that's the one side of the ball that I
- 24:47Speaker 1: don't have any issues with with Kentucky. I think the
- 24:50Speaker 1: offense will be just fine. We'll leave a little to
- 24:53Speaker 1: be desired, a little here and there, maybe so, But defensively,
- 24:56Speaker 1: really that's kind of where my concerns would be with
- 24:59Speaker 1: this team. If you can get them in a spot
- 25:02Speaker 1: where they could compete night in and night out and
- 25:05Speaker 1: just be tough along that defensive line and in the
- 25:07Speaker 1: secondary and from the linebacker positions, then maybe you'll be okay.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But I'll worry about the defense.
- 25:13Speaker 2: In a left handed way, you've just kind of hit
- 25:15Speaker 2: on a key point. Kentucky, in order to win games
- 25:18Speaker 2: and be competitive, they're gonna have to outscore people, very.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Much like the Cincinnati Bingles.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and one of the good things associated with Minshi
- 25:28Speaker 2: being the new quarterback is also this resurgence of this
- 25:32Speaker 2: offensive line, or at least what we've been told about.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I think two of their best players are on the
- 25:37Speaker 2: old line right now, Lance heard from Tennessee, and then
- 25:42Speaker 2: Colton Price the center from Baylor. Hopefully this is the
- 25:46Speaker 2: resurrection of the bleep big blue wall days. And as
- 25:50Speaker 2: you know, unless you have an old line, you're not
- 25:53Speaker 2: gonna have anybody in terms of being a quarterback, in
- 25:56Speaker 2: terms of their running game at all. This is what
- 26:00Speaker 2: we need to be looking for. Kentucky needs to off
- 26:03Speaker 2: outscore their opponents as simple as that.
- 26:06Speaker 1: That that easy, right, yep?
- 26:09Speaker 2: All right, ty, you say, what are we do for
- 26:11Speaker 2: a break? Right now? Let me come down to Okay,
- 26:53Speaker 2: thanks for playing that man? Yeah, how'd you know that?
- 26:57Speaker 2: I was a a John Mellencamp. Fact.
- 27:00Speaker 1: So always anytime we get a guest or a guest
- 27:03Speaker 1: host on I like to figure out what type of
- 27:06Speaker 1: music you like and that's That's what I play a
- 27:08Speaker 1: lot of times with our guests. I will figure out
- 27:11Speaker 1: their favorite music and then I'll play that as well. So, yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 1: I'm just a little something I like to do.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I'm a big eighties music fans. Yeah, I know that
- 27:19Speaker 2: kind of dates me a little bit, but hey, that's okay.
- 27:22Speaker 2: I still think that was the best music of all time.
- 27:24Speaker 1: That is one argument that you will never get out
- 27:27Speaker 1: of me. Eighties music is the hands down, the absolute best.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I don't care what genre you're talking about. Eighties was
- 27:34Speaker 1: the best.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Hey, here's something I like to throw out to the
- 27:38Speaker 2: listeners out there. Please text in on the Whiskey Thief
- 27:41Speaker 2: text line. I want to know what was the very
- 27:45Speaker 2: first concert you ever attended and then the very last
- 27:50Speaker 2: concert you ever attended in person? And I'll go first.
- 27:55Speaker 2: My first was the Who back in nineteen eighty three
- 28:00Speaker 2: they came to rupp Arena, and my last one was
- 28:04Speaker 2: Believe it or not? This you and I heard you
- 28:07Speaker 2: and Michael talking about him and he was bragging about
- 28:09Speaker 2: going out the Red Rocks and how great a venue
- 28:12Speaker 2: that was. But I want to throw up another venue
- 28:17Speaker 2: that I think will at least make the top five
- 28:20Speaker 2: and that is the Hollywood Bowl in LA. You know,
- 28:24Speaker 2: a lot of iconic acts have played there. It's located
- 28:27Speaker 2: right in the middle of an urban area, but you
- 28:30Speaker 2: go in there and it is like an oasis. You've
- 28:33Speaker 2: got the blue sky, you got the palm trees, you
- 28:36Speaker 2: got the wonderful acoustics, and the history of knowing that
- 28:40Speaker 2: the Beatles played there. My last concert was actually at
- 28:45Speaker 2: the Hollywood Bowl. I saw Boy George and Culture Club
- 28:50Speaker 2: Hollywood Bowl. So those are my bookends. I've got The
- 28:54Speaker 2: Who in nineteen eighty three and Boy George Culture Club
- 28:58Speaker 2: I think it was in two thousand in twenty four,
- 29:02Speaker 2: So that's fine.
- 29:03Speaker 1: That's all.
- 29:04Speaker 2: What about you in.
- 29:05Speaker 1: The Hollywood bowls awesome for what it's worth. Yeah, I've
- 29:07Speaker 1: never heard of that one, so thanks for bringing that
- 29:09Speaker 1: one up. My first one was Toby Keith and Ted
- 29:12Speaker 1: Nugent was my first one. That was probably two thousand
- 29:16Speaker 1: and five, if I had to guess, maybe maybe two
- 29:18Speaker 1: thousand and two, somewhere in that range. And then my
- 29:21Speaker 1: last one was actually Casting Crowns. They're a Christian bank.
- 29:25Speaker 1: That one was in the Louisville Palace and that was
- 29:27Speaker 1: my first time in the palace. So that one rocked.
- 29:31Speaker 2: It's interesting. That's a good way to see how people
- 29:34Speaker 2: and how their musical tastes have changed over the span
- 29:37Speaker 2: of decades. But what I've come to realize is when
- 29:40Speaker 2: people answer me that a lot of times they're first
- 29:43Speaker 2: and their last are pretty much similar the same. It
- 29:47Speaker 2: goes to show you the longevity of the performers sometimes
- 29:51Speaker 2: because sometimes there's a forty year span in between, and
- 29:55Speaker 2: to see somebody see a John Mellencamp at age twenty
- 29:58Speaker 2: versus John Mellencamp age sixty a little bit different. But
- 30:03Speaker 2: that's the thing about music. Though it kind of speaks
- 30:07Speaker 2: a different language to you, it speaks, It speaks to
- 30:10Speaker 2: you in ways that words simply can cannot. Anyway, that's sad.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I'm anxious to hear any of the listeners. First and last,
- 30:22Speaker 2: we do have the listeners. We do have a couple
- 30:24Speaker 2: of texts we can get to here. Yeah, well, this one.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Says interest in La Familia is waning because it just
- 30:30Speaker 1: seems like a sham at this point.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Well, when you talk about the fact that there's still
- 30:36Speaker 2: a two million dollar prize at the very end, I'm
- 30:41Speaker 2: sure that the players who actually sign up are playing
- 30:45Speaker 2: for that. That's one of the reasons why they sign
- 30:48Speaker 2: up for that. But also it kind of shows you
- 30:51Speaker 2: that the type of player that you might end up attracting,
- 30:54Speaker 2: you know, somebody who's already on their way out, who
- 30:57Speaker 2: maybe this is their last gasp effort. It's some sort
- 31:00Speaker 2: of fame and notoriety and connection back with the fan base.
- 31:04Speaker 2: But at the end there's that two million dollar prize
- 31:07Speaker 2: that's kind of hanging over their heads.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Too, no doubt. Michelle text in and says, I already
- 31:12Speaker 1: get free dental advice, but you may be my second choice. John.
- 31:16Speaker 2: I love Michelle. Her husband and I went to a
- 31:22Speaker 2: dental school together. Okay that was a long long time ago,
- 31:25Speaker 2: but glad you're listening. Michelle. Yeah, just keep pouring in
- 31:30Speaker 2: the thoughts on your end. I always love you your insights.
- 31:34Speaker 1: John also text in and says, hey, hey, just the
- 31:37Speaker 1: Cat's crew. I think the football Cats and coach Stein
- 31:40Speaker 1: will do great. I will take the over six games
- 31:42Speaker 1: in the win column this year. I'm looking forward to
- 31:45Speaker 1: the season to start. I may just go to the
- 31:47Speaker 1: season opener September fifth. I live in Evansville. The drive
- 31:50Speaker 1: will be worth it for this team that I believe
- 31:52Speaker 1: will be good for sure. We'll got to go talk
- 31:54Speaker 1: to you later.
- 31:55Speaker 2: Hope's freezing's eternal. That is your typical, prototypical big Blue
- 32:01Speaker 2: Nation UK football fan. Everything's great. We're undefeated right now
- 32:06Speaker 2: in August. Who knows. You win a couple of games.
- 32:10Speaker 2: You win that second game against Alabama, and you're gonna
- 32:13Speaker 2: see something steamrolling. You're gonna see the momentum start start
- 32:17Speaker 2: rolling a wall.
- 32:18Speaker 1: That would be awesome if they could get that done.
- 32:20Speaker 1: John texton again and says, justin, Yes, IU football last
- 32:23Speaker 1: season had a good QBN coach, no doubt about it. However,
- 32:26Speaker 1: you have to admit college football in general was not
- 32:29Speaker 1: that strong last season. Alabama, Georgia and even the mighty
- 32:32Speaker 1: Ohio State just did not look as good as the
- 32:34Speaker 1: past seasons. Did the other programs finally catch up to
- 32:38Speaker 1: the big dogs or was it just a perfect storm
- 32:40Speaker 1: and a program like IU caught lightning in a bottle? Hey? Justin?
- 32:43Speaker 1: How many games do you believe AU football will win
- 32:45Speaker 1: this season? Here is a hot take. IU football will
- 32:49Speaker 1: not win the Big Ten Championship. Got to go talk
- 32:52Speaker 1: to you later, John, I agree with you. I do
- 32:55Speaker 1: not think they will win the Big Ten Championship because
- 32:57Speaker 1: they're gonna lose to Michigan, but they will still win
- 33:00Speaker 1: eleven games.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Yeah, John, I feel like that. I'm not quite sure
- 33:05Speaker 2: who a fan what team you're a fan of, but
- 33:08Speaker 2: sounds like that there may be a little bit of
- 33:11Speaker 2: envy poking through there. To me, it doesn't matter what
- 33:15Speaker 2: I you did last year was fantastic, spectacular. I often
- 33:20Speaker 2: thought myself, what would happen if Kentucky football were placed
- 33:27Speaker 2: in that particular situation of having the year that I
- 33:30Speaker 2: you had last year. I think all of us fans
- 33:33Speaker 2: would just lose our collective minds. We might just go
- 33:36Speaker 2: ahead and sign on the dotted line and say we
- 33:39Speaker 2: won't follow Kentucky football ever again. If only we could
- 33:43Speaker 2: have a season like that before we die.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm here to tell y'all it's a lot of fun.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Hopefully you get the experience of one day. But for
- 33:50Speaker 1: the record, John is blue and blue.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Through and through, So just so you know, all right,
- 33:55Speaker 2: good deal.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Jamie also text in and says nineties Country would like
- 33:59Speaker 1: to have a word with you, Scoots. My first concert
- 34:02Speaker 1: was at old Cardinals Stadium in the eighties at the
- 34:04Speaker 1: Fairgrounds and it was Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine.
- 34:08Speaker 1: The rhythm is gonna get you scoots now, Okay. He
- 34:13Speaker 1: does bring up a good point there, eighties music has
- 34:16Speaker 1: the best except for country that that does belong to
- 34:20Speaker 1: the nineties.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Jamie's right, all right, well, good, good for Jamie. Thanks
- 34:24Speaker 2: thanks for your input there. Hey, I need a little
- 34:27Speaker 2: help here and keeping with the spear of the show.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I know sometimes Michael likes to kind of digress. So
- 34:35Speaker 2: here's a situation I want to throw at you and
- 34:38Speaker 2: any of the listeners out there. But it has to
- 34:41Speaker 2: do with with tipping. I was at one of these
- 34:46Speaker 2: fast casual restaurants the other day. It was more casual
- 34:50Speaker 2: than it was fast, but it was one of these
- 34:53Speaker 2: counter service things, no table service at all, no real
- 34:58Speaker 2: real life people helping you out. And I am up
- 35:01Speaker 2: at the counter paying for my food, and of course
- 35:03Speaker 2: they turn that little machine towards you, and the tip
- 35:07Speaker 2: screen comes up, how much would you like to tip?
- 35:10Speaker 2: And the choices are twenty, twenty five and thirty And
- 35:16Speaker 2: I'm kind of it depends on what kind of mood
- 35:19Speaker 2: I'm in, but for the most part, I'm pretty tight
- 35:23Speaker 2: with my money. I'll just let people know that. And
- 35:26Speaker 2: so immediately I'm thinking, okay, this is one of these
- 35:30Speaker 2: counter service places. I don't think you have to tip.
- 35:34Speaker 2: So I'm looking at the machine there, looking for the
- 35:37Speaker 2: opt out or the custom tip or the place where
- 35:40Speaker 2: you can put zero and sign your name and move on.
- 35:45Speaker 2: I can't find that. It's not on there. I promise
- 35:48Speaker 2: you it was not on there. And this is part
- 35:52Speaker 2: of their protocol. They want to kind of shame you
- 35:55Speaker 2: into not only tipping the twenty twenty five or thirty
- 35:58Speaker 2: percent because they know people are watching, but they also
- 36:01Speaker 2: know people are waiting, and so you don't have time
- 36:04Speaker 2: to kind of stand there and start fiddling with okay,
- 36:08Speaker 2: what custom tip and whatever. Occasionally at these places, I'll
- 36:11Speaker 2: give two or three dollars just for the heck of it,
- 36:14Speaker 2: but there's not even an option in order to do that.
- 36:17Speaker 2: So I go ahead and somehow I hit that twenty percent.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I'm not quite sure what got into me. I think
- 36:26Speaker 2: it was the pressure of there were people behind me
- 36:28Speaker 2: waiting on me. So I went ahead and did that,
- 36:31Speaker 2: and okay, no big deal. But then after I finished
- 36:35Speaker 2: my meal and it wasn't really that good, I start
- 36:37Speaker 2: thinking to myself you know, this is not the money.
- 36:41Speaker 2: This is actually the principle. So my question to you,
- 36:44Speaker 2: justin is is there any recourse. I know, the time
- 36:49Speaker 2: in order to recoup that twenty percent is not going
- 36:52Speaker 2: to be worth the time that it's going to take
- 36:54Speaker 2: in order to recoup the twenty percent, But from a
- 36:57Speaker 2: matter of principle, is there anything that I can do
- 37:00Speaker 2: to actually get that back?
- 37:03Speaker 1: Who? Great question. I don't have anything as it stands now,
- 37:09Speaker 1: but I do. I mean, I feel you with this
- 37:12Speaker 1: situation because it's gotten to the point where it's it's
- 37:15Speaker 1: really frustrating. You used to only have to tip when
- 37:18Speaker 1: you went and sat down at a nice restaurant, and
- 37:20Speaker 1: then I have no problem tipping there because I've I've
- 37:23Speaker 1: worked in restaurants in the past. I'm if I go
- 37:25Speaker 1: to a restaurant today, I am easily twenty five percent
- 37:29Speaker 1: tip in every single time. But if I go to
- 37:31Speaker 1: a fast casual place like that and I'm doing the work,
- 37:34Speaker 1: I'm the one that's having to walk up to the
- 37:36Speaker 1: counter and pull out my wallet and put it in
- 37:38Speaker 1: the machine, I don't see a reason to tip for that.
- 37:41Speaker 1: All the employees they are getting paid a pretty solid wage,
- 37:45Speaker 1: it's not like they're getting paid two dollars an hour
- 37:48Speaker 1: like a server at a sit down place. So yeah,
- 37:51Speaker 1: it's it's gotten out of control. I typically I fear
- 37:56Speaker 1: to say this, but I typically do not tip at
- 37:58Speaker 1: those places because I do I think they are getting
- 38:00Speaker 1: a fair hourly wage for what they're doing, and I
- 38:04Speaker 1: just don't see a reason to give them anymore. So,
- 38:06Speaker 1: but it has. It's gotten pretty complicated, right and not
- 38:10Speaker 1: when you were going through that whole situation, I felt
- 38:13Speaker 1: every emotion that you were describing, because it is it
- 38:17Speaker 1: is the anxiety that fills you as you're waiting to
- 38:22Speaker 1: try to figure all this out and there are people
- 38:24Speaker 1: behind you and all that. Yeah, it's a lot, it's
- 38:26Speaker 1: it is a lot, for sure.
- 38:28Speaker 2: I do wonder with all the influx of World Cup fans,
- 38:32Speaker 2: of international fans who have come through here, who in
- 38:36Speaker 2: a lot of other countries are not used to tipping
- 38:39Speaker 2: at all at all, whether how the tipping scenario has
- 38:44Speaker 2: gone throughout this last month. I'm sure a lot of
- 38:48Speaker 2: these establishments are making an extra effort to tell these
- 38:53Speaker 2: international fans that tipping is usual and customary. That's huge
- 38:59Speaker 2: right now, when you're talking twenty to thirty percent on
- 39:01Speaker 2: top of the bill, and a lot of times. You know,
- 39:04Speaker 2: I know, technically you're not supposed to figure tax into that,
- 39:07Speaker 2: you're not supposed to figure the bar tab into much
- 39:12Speaker 2: of that, but when I'm calculating, it is strictly off
- 39:17Speaker 2: the total, and to me, twenty percent is always easy,
- 39:22Speaker 2: so I usually go that at a sit down. But
- 39:25Speaker 2: if you're looking at these fast casual places, yes, they
- 39:28Speaker 2: are literally shaming you. They're pressurizing you. The pressure is
- 39:33Speaker 2: coming from every single direction, from the employee standing behind
- 39:37Speaker 2: the little kiosk to the person the customer standing behind you,
- 39:41Speaker 2: And a lot of it depends on who you're with.
- 39:43Speaker 2: If I'm with some friends, I don't want them to
- 39:46Speaker 2: think that I am purposely cheap or I'm not necessarily sure.
- 39:50Speaker 2: I feel comfortable with them knowing how much I'm tipping
- 39:54Speaker 2: the place, or whether I'm tipping or not in a
- 39:56Speaker 2: fast casual place. I've got some friends who will tip
- 39:59Speaker 2: wherever they go.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, I get that as well. But it's funny
- 40:04Speaker 1: you bring up the international because my grandparents, As I mentioned,
- 40:08Speaker 1: my grandparents are German. The amount of times in my
- 40:11Speaker 1: life that I have had to call them out for
- 40:13Speaker 1: leaving just an atrocious tip is I mean, it's and
- 40:17Speaker 1: I hate doing it every time, but it's like your
- 40:20Speaker 1: alls bill is one hundred dollars, you can't leave them
- 40:22Speaker 1: eight percent Like that's that doesn't fly. So I've kind
- 40:26Speaker 1: of had to guide them throughout their older years about
- 40:29Speaker 1: how to appropriately to in a restaurant, which has been.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Fun and unfortunately now just based on what we've just discussed,
- 40:36Speaker 2: it is becoming more and more complicated to the point
- 40:40Speaker 2: that people just don't know what to do. And you know,
- 40:44Speaker 2: if for me, at least I want to at least
- 40:48Speaker 2: they err on the side of being a little bit
- 40:49Speaker 2: more generous most of the time. But on the other hand,
- 40:52Speaker 2: if it's something that is not usual in customary and
- 40:56Speaker 2: something that the workers don't deserve or aren't expecting, I
- 40:59Speaker 2: don't want to just row my money away. I would
- 41:01Speaker 2: have rather gone for give me the lobster, you know,
- 41:05Speaker 2: instead of settling for the stake, I should have gotten
- 41:08Speaker 2: the lobster. Yeah.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Jamie has a good point on the text line says
- 41:12Speaker 1: if there's no waiter a waitress, then there should be
- 41:14Speaker 1: no tip. That's the way I look at it.
- 41:16Speaker 2: To let's make Jamie the tipper in charge the hippings are.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Jamie also is curious how much it would cost to
- 41:25Speaker 1: wire someone's mouth shut?
- 41:29Speaker 2: Do you have somebody particularly in mind?
- 41:32Speaker 1: The interesting part about this text is Jamie's an officer,
- 41:36Speaker 1: so I don't know what he's playing in there. Uh.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Do have another text from John as well. He says,
- 41:44Speaker 1: of course I believe Blue Forever and always. My first
- 41:47Speaker 1: concert I went to was George Jones and the opening
- 41:50Speaker 1: act was Blake Shelton at the Evansville Old National Events Plaza.
- 41:53Speaker 1: My last one was two years ago at the Evansville
- 41:56Speaker 1: Ford Center to watch different Christian bands at Winter jam
- 41:59Speaker 1: like I like all kinds of music. Also, nineties country
- 42:02Speaker 1: was the best. We'll got to go talk to you later.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Good. You see a little bit of progression there.
- 42:09Speaker 2: But right now, I'm not a big, big crowds person,
- 42:13Speaker 2: so I'd much rather just download the music and I'll
- 42:16Speaker 2: just listen with my headphones and go be bopping along
- 42:19Speaker 2: down the line. Probably only three acts I would have
- 42:23Speaker 2: ended up paying to see anyway during the course of
- 42:25Speaker 2: my lifetime, and that that was who it was, Paul
- 42:29Speaker 2: Simon and John Mellencamp. So those three are my top three,
- 42:33Speaker 2: and I'm happy to say that I have seen all
- 42:36Speaker 2: three of those live and in person.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Well, now we've gotten to a point with concerts where
- 42:41Speaker 1: it's not affordable to go anymore.
- 42:43Speaker 2: It's gotten expensive, too expensive. You got drunk people sitting
- 42:48Speaker 2: all around you. It's just not very enjoyable. Then you've
- 42:52Speaker 2: got to fight the crowds going in and out at
- 42:54Speaker 2: some of these venues. To me, unless it's an act
- 42:57Speaker 2: that has some special significance or some sort of emotional
- 43:01Speaker 2: appeal to you, or maybe it's a special anniversary or something,
- 43:06Speaker 2: just just let me do something else. Maybe I'm anti social.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Maybe so might be the case.
- 43:14Speaker 2: What did you think about Michael's interview with Tubby Smith yesterday?
- 43:17Speaker 1: That was great. I loved it. It was let me
- 43:20Speaker 1: just say this as an Indiana fan. When he texted
- 43:23Speaker 1: me earlier this week and let me know that Tubby
- 43:25Speaker 1: Smith was going to be on with us, I geeked out.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I love Tubby Smith, and as a Hoosier I probably shouldn't,
- 43:33Speaker 1: but I always have. I don't know what it is
- 43:35Speaker 1: about Tubby Smith. I think it was because my dad
- 43:38Speaker 1: was a big Tubby Smith fan. Girl. He's a Kentucky guy,
- 43:41Speaker 1: and he always liked those Tubby Smith teams, so I
- 43:44Speaker 1: kind of got fond of Tubby Smith. But he's like,
- 43:47Speaker 1: he's one of those guys that how could you not
- 43:49Speaker 1: like him? He just seems so freaking nice.
- 43:52Speaker 2: He is not only a Hall of Fame coach, but
- 43:55Speaker 2: he is a Hall of Fame person. If you went
- 43:58Speaker 2: ahead and looked up play in the dictionary, I think
- 44:01Speaker 2: Tubby Smith's picture would be right there. The way he
- 44:06Speaker 2: handled that entire transition. A lot of people still never
- 44:10Speaker 2: gave him credit for that nineteen ninety eight championship, saying
- 44:14Speaker 2: he won with Patinos players. That's absolutely ludicrous because if
- 44:18Speaker 2: you remember when they started out that year, they weren't
- 44:21Speaker 2: doing that well. It was only afterwards where they gained momentum.
- 44:25Speaker 2: He was the one that actually melded those players into
- 44:28Speaker 2: that team that won that national championship. Plus the way
- 44:33Speaker 2: that he handled the transition of being the first African
- 44:37Speaker 2: American coach head coach in University of Kentucky basketball history,
- 44:41Speaker 2: especially after all the integration and the race issues that
- 44:45Speaker 2: came up during the Ruugh administration, that in hindsight, I
- 44:50Speaker 2: don't think that you could have scripted it any better.
- 44:53Speaker 2: He did exactly what was required to do. Michael, though,
- 44:58Speaker 2: when I congratulated him on the interview, he responded in
- 45:02Speaker 2: the way that he always does is that he said, John,
- 45:05Speaker 2: I just never really know how an interview went, and
- 45:09Speaker 2: I'm saying that's crazy. That interview went probably as well
- 45:12Speaker 2: as it possibly could have. He was extremely respectful and Michael,
- 45:20Speaker 2: one of the reasons everybody loves him is because he's
- 45:23Speaker 2: always asking the questions that other people are thinking but
- 45:27Speaker 2: may not have the guts to ask. If you saw
- 45:30Speaker 2: him when he started on in his media role with
- 45:33Speaker 2: the University of Kentucky, he had a couple of booboos
- 45:36Speaker 2: with Caliperry and such which he asked the right question,
- 45:40Speaker 2: but his timing was off, and so he got a
- 45:44Speaker 2: lot of flak for that. But I thought the way
- 45:46Speaker 2: that he handled things with Tubby, the diplomacy involved, I
- 45:50Speaker 2: know he wanted to make Tubby feel comfortable and listening
- 45:54Speaker 2: to Tubby and his answers, I thought he was completely
- 45:57Speaker 2: completely comfortable. The two areas where Tubby could have been
- 46:04Speaker 2: stressed out on I think were perfectly addressed. Taking over
- 46:09Speaker 2: for Rick Bettino and then playing his son Saul, and Tubby.
- 46:16Speaker 2: If you remember, his answers to all of those were
- 46:18Speaker 2: it wasn't really pressure, it was just expectations. But that's
- 46:23Speaker 2: nothing that he hadn't had to deal with in his
- 46:25Speaker 2: other areas. He's always coached his son, So I thought
- 46:29Speaker 2: they were the perfect questions. I thought they were the
- 46:32Speaker 2: perfect answers.
- 46:34Speaker 1: You could really just hear in that interview how happy
- 46:38Speaker 1: Tubby Smith is. Right, not because he was elected into
- 46:41Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame, not because he's retired, more so
- 46:45Speaker 1: just because that's who he is, right Like, he's the
- 46:48Speaker 1: perfect example of somebody who realizes that, hey, we only
- 46:51Speaker 1: get one life, let me make the most of this,
- 46:54Speaker 1: and he's choosing to be happy. And that was awesome.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I mean, the amount of times that he laughed during
- 47:00Speaker 1: that interview yesterday. I don't know if I've ever heard
- 47:03Speaker 1: an interview where the person being interviewed laughed as much
- 47:07Speaker 1: as Tubby Smith did yesterday. So it was very enjoyable
- 47:10Speaker 1: for me to listen to as well. I pointed out
- 47:13Speaker 1: the sixteen siblings after the interview, the amount of times
- 47:18Speaker 1: that I thought about that yesterday after the interview, the
- 47:20Speaker 1: fact that Tubby has sixteen brothers, and sisters. Just blows
- 47:24Speaker 1: my mind. But yeah, what a great dude. I enjoyed
- 47:27Speaker 1: the interview and glad we got to do it.
- 47:29Speaker 2: That attitude of gratitude there you go. It was really
- 47:33Speaker 2: pouring out from him, and I think that is absolutely
- 47:36Speaker 2: true about Tubby Smith. He's very, very grateful. He feels
- 47:40Speaker 2: like he's extremely blessed. I think he's probably breathing a
- 47:45Speaker 2: big sigh of relief that he got the coach in
- 47:48Speaker 2: an era in which his personality allowed him to excel.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure if you hooked him up to a
- 47:57Speaker 2: live detector right now, he'd be absolutely jumping for joy
- 48:01Speaker 2: that he doesn't have to deal with all this nil
- 48:04Speaker 2: craft that's coming down the line. In fact, he mentioned
- 48:07Speaker 2: that right He mentioned at the very end that look,
- 48:10Speaker 2: my last few years, I had to deal with the
- 48:12Speaker 2: transfer portal, I had to deal with COVID, I had
- 48:15Speaker 2: to deal with NIL And even though he didn't say
- 48:17Speaker 2: it specifically, you could hear the relief in his voice that, Hey,
- 48:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna let the young whipper Snappers deal with this
- 48:26Speaker 2: particular deal with the landscape and the changing landscape of
- 48:30Speaker 2: college basketball right now.
- 48:32Speaker 1: It is wild how the older coaches just haven't wanted
- 48:36Speaker 1: to deal with this, and I get it changes really
- 48:38Speaker 1: hard to deal with. I mean, tom Izzo is one
- 48:40Speaker 1: of the only older coaches that has really stayed in
- 48:43Speaker 1: and kind of embraced all this. I guess you could
- 48:45Speaker 1: throw Callen there as well. He's a little on the
- 48:47Speaker 1: older side, but yeah, I mean, how many coaches have
- 48:50Speaker 1: we seen just get out of the game completely because
- 48:52Speaker 1: of all this, Like it's it's been pretty insane, So
- 48:56Speaker 1: I would I don't hate the choice of any coach
- 48:59Speaker 1: wanting to get because it is a lot. I couldn't
- 49:01Speaker 1: do it, know what, and be tough.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Do you believe that in order to be good at
- 49:08Speaker 2: your job you have to enjoy it? I think for
- 49:10Speaker 2: the most part that's true, don't don't you. I mean,
- 49:13Speaker 2: there are probably some exceptions of the rule. But you
- 49:16Speaker 2: take somebody like will Stein. You know that he loves
- 49:20Speaker 2: his role right now as head coach of University of Kentucky.
- 49:24Speaker 2: He grew up cheering for the program and now he's
- 49:27Speaker 2: the one kind of pulling the strings right now. And
- 49:30Speaker 2: he mentioned an interview interview I think it was Cole Koublik,
- 49:34Speaker 2: where he talked about how he loved he loved the
- 49:39Speaker 2: recruiting aspect of it. And to be good at recruiting,
- 49:42Speaker 2: you've got to love it. You've got to love interacting
- 49:45Speaker 2: with the players. You've got to love jumping in there
- 49:49Speaker 2: and going through the grind of talking to parents. And
- 49:53Speaker 2: I think that's going to show up. And will Stein,
- 49:55Speaker 2: he said, I'm not only recruiting players that we I
- 50:00Speaker 2: think we can get. I want to go ahead and
- 50:02Speaker 2: shoot for the top. And if that comes through that
- 50:05Speaker 2: he loves what he's doing, that's going to reap dividends
- 50:09Speaker 2: later on down the line.
- 50:11Speaker 1: All right, we've got to take our top of the
- 50:13Speaker 1: hour break here and we'll come back for the second hour.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Sound good, sounds perfect? All right, do it. I can't
- 50:19Speaker 2: believe how quick it's going.
- 50:20Speaker 1: It does go quick, no doubt about it. All Right,
- 50:23Speaker 1: we'll be back Just the Cats hour two, coming right out.
- 50:36Speaker 1: So excited.
- 50:39Speaker 2: A little bit of fun.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Once again, this is not Michael Bennett doctor on huang
- 51:00Speaker 2: here and encouraging everybody to participate in this next hour.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Uh we can uh listen to you text in on
- 51:11Speaker 2: the whiskey. The text line five oh two four one
- 51:15Speaker 2: four fourteen fifty and just realize that if we don't
- 51:21Speaker 2: have your participation, then then Justin and I may possibly
- 51:26Speaker 2: crash and burn during this second hour. So whether you
- 51:30Speaker 2: want to see that though, that will kind of literally
- 51:33Speaker 2: dictate whether you end up wanting to call call in now.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Now they're not going to text or call because they
- 51:38Speaker 1: probably want to hear his crash out.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody wants to see a train wreck, right, Absolutely.
- 51:44Speaker 1: We do have a couple of text in. Uh Michelle
- 51:46Speaker 1: text in and said her first concert was Alice Cooper
- 51:50Speaker 1: and the last one was Alan Jackson on his farewell tour.
- 51:53Speaker 1: That's quite the difference.
- 51:55Speaker 2: There, you go, there you go, you see, you see
- 51:57Speaker 2: quite the transition from one to the other on that.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Another texter says, my biggest concert regret is I never
- 52:04Speaker 1: got to see Tom Petty in concert.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a big regret. And that's the other thing
- 52:10Speaker 2: when we as you get a little bit older in
- 52:13Speaker 2: life and you see some of these contemporary music people
- 52:16Speaker 2: that you grew up with passing away, that just goes
- 52:20Speaker 2: to show you how old you are that you do
- 52:22Speaker 2: have to savor the moments, you have to enjoy the time.
- 52:25Speaker 2: As Rick Patino said, enjoy the precious present right now
- 52:29Speaker 2: because it will go by extremely, extremely quickly.
- 52:33Speaker 1: Yep. Yeah, Texter says Tubby is the best, and I
- 52:36Speaker 1: think we all only realize that more and more as
- 52:39Speaker 1: the years go on and we see some other coaches
- 52:41Speaker 1: we've had at UK.
- 52:43Speaker 2: I think so. I think there you probably could make
- 52:46Speaker 2: an argument in regard to who is the most beloved
- 52:49Speaker 2: coach in UK basketball history, and I think right now
- 52:53Speaker 2: Joe b probably sits at the top of the list
- 52:56Speaker 2: just simply because of the longevity is associated with the program. Tubby, though,
- 53:02Speaker 2: I think, is a close number two. As we look
- 53:04Speaker 2: back on his time in hindsight, I think his accomplishments
- 53:08Speaker 2: will just be greatly magnified. We'll think more fondly of
- 53:12Speaker 2: him as time goes on.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Also, that's basically what I told Michael the other day
- 53:16Speaker 1: is out of all the Kentucky coaches, just it feels
- 53:19Speaker 1: like people like Tubby the most. There's the late less
- 53:24Speaker 1: amount of animosity with him than any other UK had
- 53:27Speaker 1: go So, yeah, great dude.
- 53:30Speaker 2: And accomplishment wise, I mean, you can't argue with what
- 53:33Speaker 2: he did. Cal said that probably the lifespan was about
- 53:37Speaker 2: ten years and Tubby satisfied that. Probably the one gripe
- 53:42Speaker 2: is that for the end part of his career it
- 53:44Speaker 2: did also get a little bit stale. I think the
- 53:48Speaker 2: recruiting dropped off quite a bit. The fan base was
- 53:52Speaker 2: frustrated with never really truly being in the hunt for
- 53:56Speaker 2: a Final four, even for an Elite eight. They just
- 54:00Speaker 2: weren't that relevant anymore because if you remember, at the
- 54:04Speaker 2: very beginning, had won that national championship, and I think
- 54:07Speaker 2: there were two or three years in which they were
- 54:10Speaker 2: the number one seed. Kentucky was the number one seed
- 54:12Speaker 2: in the NCAA tournament that two thousand and three, two
- 54:15Speaker 2: thousand and four year where Bogan's twisted his ankle against Marquette.
- 54:19Speaker 2: That could have easily been another national championship that would
- 54:23Speaker 2: have really cemented his legacy.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Sure he would have, in my opinion, he'd have been
- 54:28Speaker 1: at that top spot if that happened.
- 54:31Speaker 2: As it is, Kentucky basketball still looking for championship number nine.
- 54:37Speaker 2: I hate to say this justin but as time goes on,
- 54:41Speaker 2: I'm in the fourth quarter of my life right now,
- 54:44Speaker 2: I'm not quite sure I'm going to see another national
- 54:47Speaker 2: championship while I'm still alive. I hate saying that, and
- 54:51Speaker 2: a lot of it has also to do with just
- 54:54Speaker 2: the way the sport, the college landscape has changed over time.
- 54:58Speaker 2: But I think it's going to be hard and harder
- 55:00Speaker 2: now for Kentucky basketball to capture that that title. I
- 55:04Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen for a long time.
- 55:07Speaker 1: You know what I call that?
- 55:09Speaker 2: What do you call that? That?
- 55:11Speaker 1: My friend is stinking thinking? We need we need positive positive.
- 55:15Speaker 2: It is all right, So let's talk about how this
- 55:18Speaker 2: team is going to go ahead and break through that
- 55:21Speaker 2: barrier and surprise everybody, because I think it will be
- 55:25Speaker 2: a surprise. I think most of the scuttle butt that
- 55:28Speaker 2: I've gotten right now is this team is good. It
- 55:31Speaker 2: may be Pope's best team yet, but I'm not quite
- 55:35Speaker 2: sure that at the level of being able to talk
- 55:37Speaker 2: about them as a contender for a Final Four, and
- 55:41Speaker 2: that's ultimately the bar that needs to be set. I'm
- 55:45Speaker 2: not one for stinking thinking, Really, I'm not. I don't
- 55:48Speaker 2: want to think that way. Kentucky basketball, at least back
- 55:52Speaker 2: in the day, should have always had national championship as
- 55:56Speaker 2: one of the realistic goals. But this year I think
- 55:59Speaker 2: we probably need to set our sites a little bit lower.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Let's be a little bit more patient right out of
- 56:04Speaker 2: the gate. Let's see how this team does defensively, just
- 56:08Speaker 2: like with football. That may be my biggest concern when
- 56:12Speaker 2: you start talking about Trent Noah being the top defensive player,
- 56:16Speaker 2: as Popees came out and said during his latest interview.
- 56:19Speaker 2: And I know, Pope, he's just trying to build everybody up,
- 56:23Speaker 2: but if Trent Noah truly is the best defensive player
- 56:26Speaker 2: on the team, then you've got problems.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Yeah. For me, I don't put too much stock into
- 56:33Speaker 1: anything that Pope says about Trent Noah because it's all
- 56:35Speaker 1: beautiful with the quotes that he had last summer about Trendoh,
- 56:40Speaker 1: He's been the best shooter in practice seventy percent or
- 56:43Speaker 1: whatever it was that he ended up saying. And then
- 56:45Speaker 1: you got nothing from Trentoah last year. I mean absolutely nothing.
- 56:50Speaker 1: So I'm not putting any stock into it. I would
- 56:53Speaker 1: love it if it happens, because I like trentono as
- 56:55Speaker 1: as a person. I think he seems like a really
- 56:57Speaker 1: good kid. I want to root for him. But yeah,
- 57:00Speaker 1: I'm with you. If that's your best defensive player, then
- 57:04Speaker 1: you're probably gonna be in a little bit of trump.
- 57:07Speaker 2: On the other hand, when you go down through the
- 57:09Speaker 2: roster and you think about people who could be defensive stoppers,
- 57:13Speaker 2: I'm not sure you can come up within any of
- 57:16Speaker 2: these these two point guards that they have Diallo and Wilkins.
- 57:20Speaker 2: They're not known for their defensive prowess, right, we know, mom,
- 57:24Speaker 2: Chilovich couldn't guard your grandmother, could he? Right? Yeah? Justin
- 57:29Speaker 2: McBride a little bit slow. You get him match against
- 57:32Speaker 2: somebody who's taller and quicker and faster, he's gonna have trouble.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Malachai Moreno, he wasn't known for being a defensive stopper.
- 57:41Speaker 2: He wasn't a great shop blocker. He's not known for
- 57:44Speaker 2: clogging the middle or anything like that.
- 57:46Speaker 1: I think.
- 57:49Speaker 2: You do, I do, all right.
- 57:50Speaker 1: I he'll be more of a defensive presence.
- 57:53Speaker 2: Well, we need him to kind of step up that
- 57:55Speaker 2: aspect of his game. And you talk about hands. I've
- 57:58Speaker 2: emphasized the importance of hands. He needs to get a
- 58:02Speaker 2: lot stronger with his hands. How many times last year
- 58:06Speaker 2: did people throw him the ball and they ended up
- 58:08Speaker 2: taking the ball away from him because he just couldn't
- 58:11Speaker 2: grab it and hold on to it. I'm hoping that
- 58:14Speaker 2: that's gonna don't they have exercises. I remember a couple
- 58:17Speaker 2: of years ago there was a Kentucky football player who
- 58:19Speaker 2: I can't even remember who it was, but he had
- 58:21Speaker 2: trouble holding onto the ball and they went ahead and
- 58:24Speaker 2: they had the trainers work with him specifically in grip
- 58:28Speaker 2: strength and hand strength, and he made improvements from that standpoint.
- 58:32Speaker 2: But back to the defensives to end, maybe Cam Williams right,
- 58:37Speaker 2: maybe he could be the one, but he's got to
- 58:39Speaker 2: stay healthy. So defensively, I'll repeat it. This is gonna
- 58:45Speaker 2: make it easy as a talking point, But I think
- 58:47Speaker 2: for Kentucky basketball, just like Kentucky football, they are going
- 58:51Speaker 2: to have to outscore their opponents if they want to
- 58:54Speaker 2: be competitive and have a really good year.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I don't disagree with that. I think
- 59:00Speaker 1: the offensive firepower is going to be enough to make
- 59:03Speaker 1: that happen. I mean, I'm a big believer in Alex Wilkins.
- 59:07Speaker 1: I'm kind of undecided as it stands now in Zoom Diallo,
- 59:10Speaker 1: but I do think Wilkins is gonna be really good.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I think Justin McBride's gonna surprise a lot of people.
- 59:15Speaker 1: We've heard some good reports about Braden Hawthorne, but he's
- 59:19Speaker 1: another guy that I'm not really putting a lot of
- 59:21Speaker 1: stock into. But I do think there's enough offensive guys
- 59:24Speaker 1: on this team. Can Williams is a great example of
- 59:26Speaker 1: that that can really really score a bunch of points.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Mom Chilovich was such a big get in that regard
- 59:33Speaker 1: to so yeah, I mean, you might be in a
- 59:35Speaker 1: position where you have to outscore your opponents, but I
- 59:38Speaker 1: do think there's enough firepower on this team to make
- 59:41Speaker 1: that happen.
- 59:42Speaker 2: And I can see that happening. I can see Wilkins
- 59:45Speaker 2: the alo, going ahead, creating driving the lane, making their
- 59:49Speaker 2: own moves, creating space for not only mom Chilovich on
- 59:54Speaker 2: the wing, but also Marino inside. It could happen. And
- 59:58Speaker 2: that kind of plays right in to what Mark Pole
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: was brought in here for. We always thought that he was, Okay,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: let's space the floor, let's shoot a bunch of threes,
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: and unfortunately last year that turned out to be a
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: little bit of false advertising. We just didn't see that
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: thirty to thirty five threes ended up being fifteen, maybe
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: twenty threes a game, and that's just not going to
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: cut it in Pope's system. The other thing is how
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: are all these guys going to end up playing together.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: We've heard the same thing year after year at this
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: point of the year. Everybody loves each other, everybody sitting
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: around the campfire seeing kumbai Ya. But what are the
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: things that are really going to be able to bring
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: about chemistry for this team? So much of offseason talk
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: has been talking about establishing chemistry, right the lack of
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: an overseas trip. Now, they did go to Las Vegas,
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: they went to the Kenny Chesney concert, they played a
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: little golf together, they watched NBA games during the summer.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: All that is good, but I don't think it really
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: really replaces that bonding you could have by going overseas,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: being in Italy, playing all those extra games together, just
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: being able to stay in the same room as each other.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: This idea that they're staying in the wildcat lodges here
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: shouldn't be a novel idea. Those of us all remember
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: the Joe B. Hallwold cat lodge. That was normal. That
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: was how chemistry started, not by being forced upon you,
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: not by doing all these activities, but just by being
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: able to walk down the hall together and seeing these
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: people day after day in their own natural environment. I
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: think moving them back into the Wildcat Lodge is good.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: I understand it's a different era nowadays. Players are older,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: some of them are married, some of them even have kids.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: But this idea that you get to know people the
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: best us by living with them, I think is absolutely true.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not wrong in that at all. And all that,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: all that you just mentioned goes a long way in
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: building that. Maybe not chemistry chemistry is probably an example
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: of it, but also just getting comfortable with one another
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: and learning the ins and outs of your teammates. That's
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: going to help you on the floor as well. So
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you're right and saying.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: All that, Yeah, I appreciate all these community related events
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: that they're doing when they go to the hospital and
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: visiting kids, being able to pay it forward is wonderful.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: That builds character and it also builds solidarity between the team.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: And one thing that I do think that is really
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: missing is this idea of summer camps. They haven't had
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: any this year. This father daughter camp and father son camp.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Not only did that benefit the people who were participating,
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: but I think it also allowed the players to kind
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: of get together common call, Hey, we're doing something good
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: for the community, and then afterwards. My understanding is that
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: a lot of times after those summer camps, the players
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: would get together and they would just play natural, casual
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: pickup games that can also help all these things that
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: the players used to do, and they aren't doing. That
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: concerns me a little bit. But who am I to
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: say I'm a worry wart. I don't want stinking thinking.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Let's go ahead and hope that Pope has things under control.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: That's it. What is there one player in particular on
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: this team that you're looking forward to more than anybody else.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: I probably want to see how Malachi has developed, and
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: you alluded that to that fact. I think because of
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: his dipping his toes and testing the NBA waters, that
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: almost gave him a little bit more worth than he
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: really has. In other words, I don't think I'm saying
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: that correctly. I think in our minds he was actually
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: we think that he was better last year than he
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: actually was. Sure he had some good games, a game
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: winner against LSU for a player who we didn't really
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: expect to have much playing time, he did fantastic. But
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: I don't think that he was by any stretch of
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: the imagination a game changer. Last year he came in.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: He did fine, but to expect him to be the
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: best college center in the in college basketball this year
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: probably is a little bit of a stretch. If he
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: can get someplace close to that, then I think there
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: might actually be a chance of Final Four. But until
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: we see it, I will believe it when I see it.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Do we see him extend his range at all this season,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: because that's in my opinion, that's one of the most
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: that I need to see out of Malaka. I need
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: to need to see him more in that mid range,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: even taking shots from beyond the perimeter. I want to
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: see more of that for Melakai.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think that would require maybe a little
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: bit of a paradigm shift. Maybe if you can play
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: McBride at the true five position sometimes that would allow
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Malachi the flexibility to do a little bit more roaming.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: I don't know, think outside the box. I've heard that
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: rhes Potter is really coming on.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: I've heard that too.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he's been kind of a almost an afterthought
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: right now. Okay, here's just the guy, you know, local
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: kid coming back to the program. Roy Rye loves to
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: play for the university of Kentucky, the name on the
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: front of the jersey, turned down more extra money just
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: so he could play. But I think that he could
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: actually be extremely serviceable, not only with Malachi maybe getting
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: in some foul trouble, but who knows, play a little
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: twin tower. I'm all for that.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I wouldn't hate that either. All right, one text
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: to get to here on the text line. Then we'll
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: step aside for our break here. Textas says Martina McBride,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: probably has a better chance of locking out on defense
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: than Justin.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Uh, it's not everything I heard about. That is probably
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: kind of true, although I'll still put my money on Justin.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Well, here you go. There's there's that text. Thanks for
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: sending that in, Jamie. But we do have to take
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: another break here, John.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: All right, all right, we'll see there end.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: All right, see you.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: A little bit of Paul Simon here, but welcome back everybody.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: But you heard yeah, I heard that? What? Yeah? Yeah?
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: That came on We, Mike are not supposed to No,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Michael can never hear the music, and I've never understood
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: it because you're here. You hear the commercials and the
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: commercials and the music is coming out of the same speaker,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: but he can never hear the music.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: It has been inconsistent. Though sometimes during coming back from
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: the breaks, I've been able to hear it. Other times
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: I have not, So I don't know. Maybe maybe it's
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: some sort of technology glitch. But welcome everybody to the
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: second hour of Just the Cats. We are well into
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: the second hour and justin, they have not pulled the
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: plug yet on us, so I guess we're doing something correctly.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: The yeah that that's that's probably more realistic. But thank
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: you for making sure that everything runs correctly. I want
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: to thank Michael again for this opportunity. This is now
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: the most important part of the program where I do
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: my speel about shameless self promotion. I still have people
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: on X saying, who is this guy? Well, I just
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: want to tell you a little bit about myself, doctor
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: John Wong. In my previous life, I was an orthodonist.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: I created beautiful smiles. I retired stepped away from the
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: chair about eleven years ago. I can't believe it's been
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: that quick and pursued one of my other passions. I
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: tell everybody life is short. If you've got something you
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: want to do, you've got to jump into it. So
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: throughout my life, I've always loved to write. I always
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: loved the University of Kentucky sports, so I told myself,
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: why don't I just combine those passions. I will just
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: write about the University of Kentucky sports. So it's been
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: a dream come true. That's my tagline, living the dream.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: To be able to have access to people like University
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Kentucky basketball players and John Caliperry over the years, and
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: to actually be able to ask him questions that I
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: had always wanted to ask was, like I said, at
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: a dream come true. So I got to know Michael
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Bennett through the website Just Thecats dot Com, which is
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: unfortunately no longer viable right now. But we had a
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: lot of fun with Michael putting this platform together. And
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: as he's gone on to do bigger and better things,
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: I understand that he's sold a couple of businesses, built
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: up a couple of businesses. He's now a big high
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: falute and horse sky right right now. I went on
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: and I just did my little old things of writing articles,
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: and I've written a few books since then, eight books
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: in four years, so I've been a busy boy. You
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: can go most of them are University of Kentucky Sports Centric.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: You can go to Amazon on my author page, Doctor
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: John Huong and you can pick those up. I promise
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: you that they will be a good read. And if
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: you see me walking around any place and you happen
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: to have the book with you. I don't know how
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: many people walk around with Doctor John Huang books, probably zero,
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: but if you are one of those, I'll be glad
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: to sign them for you. Flag me down. Officially, I
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: write for UK Sports for Nolan Group Media. It is
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: a series of newspapers out of southeastern Kentucky. You can
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: also look me up on that and also on my
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: private blog site huongswhinings dot com, where I talk about
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: all sorts of things, including sports, including politics, including religion,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: anything that might pique your interests. So that's my story.
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: I'm sticking to it.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Can I ask you a question about the book side
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: of things?
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: What is the hardest part about writing a book?
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: For me? It depends on personality, But for me, I
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: love writing the aspect of it. People ask me all
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: the time, how long did it take you to write this?
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: I've always loved to write a fiction book, and my
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: first one came out. It's called Get This Name, Image
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: and Murder. It's about a sports reporter actually who is
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: involved in a murder and it's a who done it?
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: But people ask me how long did it take you
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: to write that thing? And my real answer is usually
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: about two years, But it takes me about thirty years
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: to be able to think about the topic matter. It's
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: all these topics that have been running through your head
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: all this time and probably be able to kind of
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: synthesize them, organize them, get them in on paper, which
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: is probably the biggest, biggest challenge. Anybody can have diarrhea
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: of the mouth and throw out stuff, right. I'm not
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: detegrating people who are doing podcasts and radio and things
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: like that. That's not my bag. I get a lot
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: of satisfaction and joy and being able to kind of
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: think about my thoughts before I tell anybody, write them out,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: to be able to review them, read them a couple
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: of times, kind of go from there.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Gotcha now what I was thinking? Maybe your your answer
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: would be like the publishing process or just just getting
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: them out into stores or getting it to where they
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: need to be. I would have figured out hard.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the marketing aspect is really tough. So, uh, it's
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: it's hard unless you already have a platform, or unless
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: your topic is is somebody who people continuously like to
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: read or draws a lot of interest. Uh. That marketing
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: aspect is a real, real pain because you always feel
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: like that you're bugging people. You know, you're always in
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: a spend your money, buy my book, you know, read this,
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: read that. And nowadays people there their attention span is
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: so so distracted, so disjointed. Right now, there's so many
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: things competing for our attention that it's really really hard
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: to sell. So my advice is, if you're going into
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: writing a book with the hopes of making money, then
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: don't do it. There's got to be another reason for
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: doing that.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I would tell people the exact same thing. If you're
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: wanting to get in radio, don't.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Okay, there you go. You do it for the name
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: on the front of the jersey, right for the love
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: of the game itself. I mentioned earlier that I do
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: enjoy I probably enjoy University of Kentucky sports more than
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: I do sports itself. I always grew up loving sports,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: but it was really this love affair that UK that
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: really got me into it. So I'm one of the
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: few media people who is not specializing in one particular program.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: You know, you have all these guys who cover specifically
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: University of Kentucky basketball men's basketball. Then you've got people
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: who cover UK football, and then all these other sports
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: are kind of like crumbs that are thrown out. You
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: got the people that are starting up the Kentucky Colonel
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Student newspaper reporters that cover I've made it point that
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: I wanted to really get into as many of these
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: covering as many of these different sports as I possibly could.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: So over these past ten years, you know, I've been
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: a big, big advocate of a University of Kentucky women's
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: basketball program. Look what Kenny Brooks has done. You know,
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: I am hoping that this is going to be the
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: beginning of a super big ride. Now I understand women's basketball,
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: there's still it's still divided into very different tiers. You've
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: got that top tier with the Yukons and the South
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Carolinas and the USC's. It's gonna be hard to break
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: into that well. Unfortunately, the final four with women's basketball
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: is usually the same every year. You might get a
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: new team here once in a while, but it's always
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: the same year. There are very very few upsets. I'm
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: thinking that Kentucky and Brooks has a team this year
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: that maybe actually be able to break into that top level.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: They've got all the horses, Clara Stratt coming up. This
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: is a team that I could see potentially making the
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Final four for the first time in program's history. They've
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: been kind of close during the Matthew Mitchell days, but
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: this is a team that they can actually do it.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: I'm right there with you. It's kind of been a
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: running joke on this show that I have a huge
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: man crush on Kenny Brooks. It's not really a joke.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I actually do. I think he is the absolute man.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: The way he recruits, the way he interacts with his players,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: the way he coaches. I mean, I love everything about
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: that dude. I think I'm right there with you. I
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: think they are right on the verge of a breakthrough.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: And then you got that what six' six girl coming next.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Year that's that's gonna be. Huge so not only is
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: he doing all the right things at The university Of,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: kentucky but he's also doing a great job in terms of,
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: recruiting whether that be, freshman, transfer. Portal so, Yeah I'm
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: i'm right there with. YOU i think he's right on
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: the edge of doing something really.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Special look how intentional he is in terms of his.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: Recruiting he is like a man on a commando. Mission
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: he spots somebody that he wants to. Target then he
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: goes in and he does everything possible to go ahead
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: and and and and get them and and that's reflected
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: in the way his roster is set up this. Year
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: he's got a great combination of. Veterans. Uh he's got
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: the Clear, Strack he's got The Asia, Boon he's got
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Don parova coming. Back you, know even his, daughter she
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: doesn't get much playing, time But gabby is a stabilizing
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: force on this. Team then you've got those three Freshmen Maddy,
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: greenway savvy, Swords emily. McDonald and you throw in on
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: top of this this what this player who's already been
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: drafted by by the w N B A. UH i
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: think she's From, Croatia Aisha. Sweeka i'm not quite sure
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: how to pronounce. That. Book we're going to get that
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: pronunciation down because she is going to be a. Force
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: and then the. Transfers i've got the roster right, Here Deanna,
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Collins Ayana, Patterson mariyah. O'Neill these are not, yeah, yeah
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: these are are not after. Thoughts they are true players
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: who can be the nucleus of a very very solid.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: Team Even JEMMA A, moore the sister of point Guard
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: GEORGIA A, moore even she can fulfill some very important
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: minutes when she's. Needed so big question there is that
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: point guard. Position because he has been kind of the
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: point guard whisperer during the time that we've seen him
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: With GEORGIA A, moore With Tony morgan last. YEAR i
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: don't know Is Diana collins going to be able to
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: step into that role and fulfill that? Role is there
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: going to be somebody? ELSE i think that's going to
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: be the major question with this. Team if he can
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: find a point guard who is not just, serviceable but
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: can excel at that, position THEN i think the sky
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: is the limit for this. Team you're gonna have a
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: lot of bandwagon people jumping.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: On i'm right there with. You so outside of men's
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: basketball and, football is women's basketball your?
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: FAVORITE i think probably because if you're talking about just
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: the intensity of covering a, program nothing's ever gonna beat men's,
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: basketball ALTHOUGH i can't say AND i never THOUGHT i
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: would say this and just pull the plug right now
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: if this is starting to get out. Hand but there
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Are tuesday night games in the middle of winter against
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: also ran competitions THAT i do ask, myself what in
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: the world AM i doing. HERE i would much rather
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: be on my couch and not have to fight the
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: traffic and the crowds and the bathroom in order to watch.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: This but it Is kentucky, basketball and there's a part
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: of me that, says this is something THAT i would
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: never give, up That i'm never gonna get tired, of all,
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Right but in terms of just true enjoyment and and
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: what the sport, means and being able to cover the
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: emotions and the players and their, reactions THAT i think
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: women's basketball probably is right at the top of the line.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: There they actually still it's a. Program men's basketball almost
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: feels like that you're you're a. Fly they get out of.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Here we've got enough people that we can put out
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: our own. Stuff you're a. NUISANCE i always feel like
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: that the media is treated that. Way football not quite,
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: there but getting that. Way women's basketball they still want you.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: There they still appreciate your. Coverage they still like they
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: understand the fact that you're actually helping them. Out why
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: Can't kentucky basketball under stand A kentucky men's basketball that
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: the media is not there to be. Adversarial they're there
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: to help tell the. Stories it's all about telling. Stories
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: and sometimes to be treated as if we're like the.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: Enemy to be somebody that just to accommodate just because
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: they have, to is a little bit off. Putting you
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: don't feel that with some of these other sports like
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: baseball and women's basketball and, volleyball, softball track and, field,
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: gymnastics things of. That ELK i.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: Love i'm glad you mentioned volleyball because that has been
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: one thing That i've thoroughly enjoyed From kentucky the last
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: couple of. Years they've been.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Fun it could be the most exciting sport on campus
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: in terms of just the fact that every point. Matters
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: it doesn't matter how the match has gone. Beforehand it
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: can literally turn on a. Dime how many times have
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: you seen a team down two to zero in terms
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: of sets and come back and Win that Thing that's
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: happened To Craig center a couple of times over the
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: past couple of. Years i'm hoping that he can get
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: off the over the. Hump he is a victim of
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: his own. Success right, now the expectations for that program
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: are so high that unless they make a final. FOUR
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: i even retract that they made the final four last
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: year and people were still. Disappointed they felt like they
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: should have won it all and and they tighten up
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: a little bit at the. End they probably really should
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: have won that national championship. Again but to be a
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: two time, winner that sets you above and Beyond Craig
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: skinner maybe the best best coach of the program right right.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: NOW i don't necessarily disagree with.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: That, yeah what about that. Schedule he's a guy who's
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: he's not afraid to. Schedule it's a. Monster AND i
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: know a couple of these Years i've, said what in
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: the world are you? Doing you're going to destroy this team's,
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Confidence but, somehow at the end of the year they
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: always end up coming On Hi, GOD i think we
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: need to take our final? Break is this our final?
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: Breakkah all, right let's do it back after? This just guess.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Where's my wife and?
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Family what IF i die? Here who'll be my role?
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: Model now that my role model is gone. Gone he
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: stump back down the alley With Summer, road The holy
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: little Bat faced girls all along.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: Alone now what?
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: Incidents an?
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: Accidents this black man with black cat blind, man.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: He's got it in stage on a dude's front.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: Child you know, what anything Says?
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: God so dudes see now that was total. SILENCE i
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: couldn't hear anything on my end from, that so.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: WEIRD i cannot figure it.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: Out, yeah you'd think that this day and, age where technology,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: rules you'd be able to get something like that figured.
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: Out how long have you been in this business?
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Now justin oh twenty, eighteen so eight years.
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Now eight years? Now how Much how much of an
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: influence have you SEEN ai come into this? Industry? Specifically
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: not so much yet.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: NOW i do think with a lot of like bumper
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: music and stuff like, that a lot of that'lls start
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: to BECOME, ai but not. Don't in terms of the radio,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: WORLD i haven't personally seen it too. Much. NOW i
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: know there's LIKE ai music that people are, making BUT
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: i MEAN i would never play any of, that and
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: the other STATION i work out would never play any of,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: That SO i haven't haven't been influenced too much by
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: the WHOLE, AI i think quite, Yet.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: I'm not completely convinced that it's going to end up
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: taking over the radio. INDUSTRY i find it very difficult
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: to believe that somebody could come up with AN ai
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: version of of A Michael bennett or even a Doctor
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: John juang Justin. Kaylin it would be hard to duplicate
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: this past hour and forty five minutes that we've just
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: just gone. Through do you USE ai much for for
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: anything work? RELATED i KNOW i. DO i use it
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: a lot for. EMAILS i do it for marketing a.
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: LOT i do it for book. PROMOS i even entered
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: AN ai thing into CHAT gpt About, Okay i'm Hosting
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Michael bennett's, show you know? What what DO i need
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: to talk? About some of the things that it gave
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: me were completely off off the. Charts but one of
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: the one of the suggestions was talk ABOUT. Ai so,
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: yeah can you USE A? Yeah. Exactly but but it
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: is interesting that before we were all just concerned about
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: robots taking over blue collar, workers you, know taking over
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: the factories and things like. That but it almost does
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: seem like that the why collar, sector the people who
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: do the, administration the writers Of hollywood shows people like
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: that have been more affected BY ai than anything.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Else, YEAH i don't personally use it all that frequently.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Now the only TIME i will is if SO i
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: write a lot of, commercials whether it be here or
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: at the other, station and IF i can't get a
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: good like, open because that's the hardest part of writing
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: a commercial is the. Open what what can you throw
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: out there that's gonna grab somebody's. Attention that's really the only.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Example AND i won't write the whole. COMMERCIAL i Just
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: i'll ask it for give me an open for this,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: business and that's attention. Grabbing that's really the only TIME
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: i ever use it OR I So michael knows, This
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: but there's a music app it's Called, suno and you
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: can basically go in there and you can tell it a,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: prompt what type genre of music you, want what, song
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: what you want the song to be, about and it'll
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: write a whole song for you with with the stuff
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: that you give. It and So i'll do that from
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: time to, time but it's never for anything. Serious it's
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: just for my own enjoyment to listen to from time to.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: Time but that's about. It that's those are the really
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: the only examples THAT i ever use.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: IT i found that the time that it probably is
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: the most effective and saves me the most time is
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: IF i have to compose some sort of formal letter
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: or even an email or something like that to somebody
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: That i've never met. Before it's always nice to be
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: able to get the transitions and make sure that the
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: grammar and everything else is properly. Constructed but other than,
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: That i've learned over the course of the time that
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: if something's too perfect people it's maybe ironic to say,
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: this but it's it's not as good as if it were.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: Imperfect people enjoy the humanity associated with radio, shows with,
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: books with, articles with things like, that it has to
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: feel like that it's coming from a human.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Being, now there are examples WHERE i HATE. AI i,
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Mean i'm pretty well AGAINST ai as it is, anyways
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: but a lot of videos they MAKE i run across
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: a lot of videos on my social medias Where i'm,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: like what in the world that's, Crazy and Then i'll
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: check the comments and it's, like, well this IS, ai
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: very OBVIOUSLY. Ai so that part's been, frustrating like why
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: CAN'T i tell WHAT'S ai and what's? Not that that
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: part annoys. Me NOW i can tell in a, picture
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: but videos it becomes more.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Tough it's it's dangerous. Nowadays and that's probably one of
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: the reasons when it first came. OUT i love doing.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: IT i was making all sorts OF ai pictures and
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: promos for my books and things like. That but when
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: you think about, it if people in their, mind if
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: they're trained to start, thinking, okay is this real or?
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: NOT i think that's a significant problem right right. NOW
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: i don't want people to get scammed and fooled all the.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: Time but if you have to go through every single
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: thing that you see in life and wonder is this
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: real or is THIS? Ai then that's that's just gonna
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: be chaos that's going to be coming coming down the
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: line That, yeah do you are you okay with way?
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: Mos are you okay with self driving cars and things like?
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: That how much experience have you had with? THAT? U?
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: Zero AND i will not have any experience with it
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: BECAUSE i won't take. ONE i WON'T i will not
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: hop in a car that does not physically have a. Driver,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: look WHEN i was a, kid we were promised flying.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: Cars we weren't promised cars that drive. THEMSELVES i would
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: much rather have a flying car than a car's.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: Driving uh You, uh this was probably before your, time
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: BUT i remember watching jets and. Cars oh, yeah And i'm, saying,
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: yeah this is the way it ought to. Be but
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: when you think about, it, uh jet packs should be
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: the norm right. Now but still that's one thing that
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: you still see very very few of. Those we should
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: all have jet packs to be able to kind of
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: propel us from one place or the other through the.
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: Air for, ME i actually love way moos. NOW i
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: spend a lot of time out In california and my
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: daughter lives In la SO i actually prefer a way
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: Mo now to a regular uber. Driver it's just nice
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: to not have to talk to somebody sometime when you're
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: in a rush and you're trying to get something. Done
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: you can just get in perfect, temperature you can turn
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: whatever music you want on. There and so far it's
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: always gotten me to the same. Place i've never been.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: One it hasn't driven me into a creek or anything like.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: That and plus how many times could you possibly get
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: a uber driver who's distracted or under the influence or
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: something like. That you just never. KNOW i figure the
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: true true test of how much trust DO i actually
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: have in self driving machines is WOULD i be willing
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: to get on a pilotless aircraft right? Now and my
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: answer to that is is, no not. YET i think
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: it's something about the three. Dimensions at least with the WAY,
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: Mo i've got the feeling in my mind that if
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: something goes, wrong at LEAST i can be on level.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: Ground i've got a fighting. Chance when you're thirty forty
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: thousand feet up in the air and something goes wrong
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: and there's nobody really to correct it or fly the,
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: plane then your. Toast yeah.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: Sure now let me ask you. This if you take AWAY,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: mo can you sit in the driver's.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: SEAT i haven't been able to so. Far you, know
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: normally it's just the back doors that will unlock for
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: you so that you can kind of jump. In, NOW
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: i don't know what would actually happen IF i climbed
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: over the little. Partition in, fact the ones That i've
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: been in haven't really had a. PARTITION i GUESS i
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: could technically jump over there and. Sit that would just
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: freak me. Out, then, right, YEAH i.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: DON'T i don't THINK i could do. It it's. Weird
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: the whole. Concept all, right we do have a couple
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: of texts that we need to get to.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Here, First, yes, thanks thank you EVERY i want to
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: thank everybody for, listening for. Participating it really means a
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: lot to. Me thank you so.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Much first text, says not good to have stinking, thinking
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: but a dirty mind is a terrible thing to. Waste.
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: UH i don't want to go quite go down on
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: that my inaugural session of hosting just The, katz but
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: bring me back a couple a couple more, times and,
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: UH i think we can add a little bit more
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: spice to the.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Conversation all, right let's see if you can add to this.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: One michael just doesn't pay attention to hear music some.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: DAYS i think he can host the show and then
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: be surprised by what's discussed on the.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: Podcast Michael bennett Is Michael. Bennett that is what makes
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: him so So.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: Uh although he.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: Did ask me to kind of participate in his horse,
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: venture And i'm starting to wonder Because i'm feeling a
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: little bit of the draw he's he's got some salesman
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: ship in. HIM i don't know if he's hit you
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: up for any of that so.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: FAR i think he knows THAT i don't have any,
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: money so there's no point hitting me up. Next texta
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: is off, topic but one thing that is kind of
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: sad is just realizing how bad a Jerk Chevy Chevy chase.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: IS i remember the video of him And Paul simon
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: on let me be your?
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Bodyguard, yeah, Yeah how how many celebrities have you run?
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Into and once, AGAIN i spend some time out IN
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: la and so occasionally you'll you'll see one at a
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: farmer's market or a concert or something like. That i'm
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: never one of these that'll go up there and and
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: and bug, Them but in seeing them interact with with other,
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: people it's interesting to see the ones who will be,
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: very very friendly versus the ones who are. JERKS i
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: guess if you're always a, jerk you're always going to
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: be a. Jerk but these people have to understand that
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: their fans are the ones who got them into that particular.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: Situation and we talked About. Tubby you've never seen him become.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: Entitled he's always Had he's always been. Grounded he always
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: knew where he came, from and that attitude of gratitude
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: has always come.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Through, yeah it would be tough being a celebrity, though
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: just always getting. BOTHERED i DON'T i don't know THAT
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: i could do.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: It, well that's why being a famous author WOULD i
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: think be, ideal because most of the time people don't
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: know what you look. Like, anyway you can still go,
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: out you can still you Know John. Grisham, yeah he's
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: been around on enough shows now that people would probably
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: recognize him and flag him. Down but on the other,
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: hand how great a life would that be to be
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: able to be sucking in that those millions of dollars
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: off of book royalties and still be able to go
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: Into kroger and buy avocado was without being.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Inundated uh buzz text in and says wants us to
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: let us wanted to let us know that he's, listening and,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: says maybe when you play AN iu guys music like
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: you just, did Big blue folks just can't hear. It
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: maybe maybe that's.
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: It, Yeah Big Blue nation has some internal. Radar we
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: we we are really really keyed into outrage and if not,
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: outraged then we'll go with it with. Ignorance there you.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: Go there's that's all the text for.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: Now all, right let's finish up WITH uk. BASEBALL i
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: had a wonderful time this year attending the regionals out
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: At West, virginia all this take Me home country. Roads,
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: YEAH i got a little bit old after a little,
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: while AND i certainly didn't like the, result but it
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: had to be one of the most exciting sporting events
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: THAT i had. Attended the way The West virginia fans
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: were into, that the way the games finished. Out if you,
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: Remember kentucky had that thing, won they were on their
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: way to not only hosting a, regional but if you,
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: remember they were scheduled to Play. Troy if they hosted
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: that super, regional they would have been in The College
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: World series for the second time in two or three,
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: YEARS i can't remember right. Now But Nick minjeone has
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: really flipped the. Script he's gone from maybe being people
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: thinking his job was in jeopardy because he was in
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: such tight to cahoots With, barnhart and When barnhardt, left
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: you kind of, wonder, okay is his job. Safe but
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: the way that he's approached things is he's really moved
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: up the echelon of college coaches in terms of the
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: program right, now the culture that he has, established the
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: players that he has coming. Back that cannot be Match right,
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: now you Heard Hudson brown talk about his loyalty to the,
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: program what coach has done for. Him the fact that
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: all these, guys These Jay, starnishes These Ethan, hendeles these
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: guys that are coming, back even though you know that
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: other programs have been recruiting, them that they probably offered
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: them more money that their loyalty to The university Of,
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: kentuckey their loyalty to Minji ONG i think really speaks.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Volumes and, well now you Get matt Poland towski coming as.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: Well right exactly when he was drafted by The, REDS i, thought,
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: yeah he's got to. Go but when you think about it,
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: rashly all, right such a low draft, pick he still
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: has the opportunity to come, back earn a bunch of nil,
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: money play, football maybe play, baseball and then he still
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: has the opportunity to go pro after. That so all
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: these things associated with the baseball program are on the
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: up and. Up Tyler bell getting, drafted all these first
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: round draft choices that could potentially be be coming, Up
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: kudos To Nick. MINJEOME i understand we only have a
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: few seconds left. Here just want to leave with something extremely.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Positive just be nice to each, other, right be kind and.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Compassionate the world needs a lot more of. That we're
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: gonna have fun on the. Show we can throw barbs
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: back and forth, here but when all is said and,
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: done it's about treating other people with, respect with, courtesy with.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: Diplomacy the world will be a much better place if
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: we do. That Jessic, cats thank, You Michael, bennett thank,
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: You Justin kaylin appreciate.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: It, yeah it was fun working with. You maybe we'll
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: get to do it again in the, future.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: Hopefully All, right that is just The.
