- 0:55Speaker 3: host Hollis Lewis, Hello, Hello, and Lisa Odie Hello. And
- 1:00Speaker 3: Lisa is going to introduce a individual on the show
- 1:06Speaker 3: today that we are privileged to have her here, and
- 1:12Speaker 3: I'm excited to just kind of hear some of the
- 1:15Speaker 3: things that some of the answers to some of the
- 1:17Speaker 3: questions that we have. I can't wait, So Lisa, Yes,
- 1:21Speaker 3: go ahead and introduce her.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I guests, please, thank you so much, carl So, I
- 1:25Speaker 4: would like to introduce our honorable guest on the podcast tonight.
- 1:29Speaker 4: She has served as the first female mayor of Charleston,
- 1:33Speaker 4: West Virginia since January twenty nineteen. She has served our
- 1:37Speaker 4: city with distinction during her tenure, and we are beyond
- 1:40Speaker 4: excited to have her with us tonight. Proudly introducing Mayor
- 1:45Speaker 4: Amy Schuler Goodwin.
- 1:46Speaker 5: Hey, that reminds me of like you ever listen to
- 1:50Speaker 5: the podcast SmartLess with Jason Bateman where they do like guests,
- 1:54Speaker 5: but they don't tell you who it is, but they
- 1:55Speaker 5: give you a little bit of background.
- 1:56Speaker 6: That's kind I felt like that.
- 1:57Speaker 3: I was did you like it?
- 1:59Speaker 6: Who is it going to be?
- 2:03Speaker 7: I love it so so before because I do know,
- 2:08Speaker 7: I do know that, uh, Hollis and Lisa, I know,
- 2:12Speaker 7: have a ton of questions for you.
- 2:14Speaker 3: My question, my my off the top question was like
- 2:19Speaker 3: when they brought they brought your name up, and so
- 2:21Speaker 3: I'm like thinking in my mind, like, Okay, that'd be
- 2:25Speaker 3: a great guess, but you know, like I'm not really
- 2:27Speaker 3: sure yet, you know not and I know you, but
- 2:29Speaker 3: I wouldn't like, you know, because some people don't really
- 2:32Speaker 3: they don't want to do this. You know, that didn't cross.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But then like the moment, like the moment that I
- 2:41Speaker 3: saw you, it was like like, oh, this is an
- 2:44Speaker 3: old friend of mine, you know. I mean, you've come
- 2:47Speaker 3: across like you're It's totally different than I think what
- 2:52Speaker 3: people who may not know you have never been around you.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I think your personality and how you come across to
- 2:59Speaker 3: just people is actually amazing.
- 3:01Speaker 6: It's sweet.
- 3:02Speaker 5: It's a wheeling in me. I think it's a little
- 3:05Speaker 5: bit of a wheeling girl in me. Well, I will
- 3:07Speaker 5: say this to you, though, girl. When I was when
- 3:09Speaker 5: I was getting in my I like to say my
- 3:11Speaker 5: big girl jobs. I remember somebody saying to me long ago,
- 3:16Speaker 5: you need to act a little bit more serious. You
- 3:17Speaker 5: need to be a little bit more put together. You
- 3:19Speaker 5: need to you're at a nine, you need to be
- 3:20Speaker 5: at a four. Maybe like tone it down a little bit.
- 3:23Speaker 5: And I will admit in my younger years, in my twenties,
- 3:26Speaker 5: I listened to especially women of influence, and thought, okay,
- 3:30Speaker 5: she's I respect her and I like her, so I
- 3:32Speaker 5: probably should listen to it. And it was the most
- 3:34Speaker 5: uncomfortable time in my life when I took it from
- 3:37Speaker 5: a nine to a four, because that's just not simply
- 3:40Speaker 5: who I am. I tried to be somebody who I
- 3:42Speaker 5: was not because I thought it would fit the professional,
- 3:46Speaker 5: the leadership mold.
- 3:47Speaker 6: Because there are so few.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Women in our purview that I latched on to the
- 3:52Speaker 5: women who were in front of me, a very small crowd,
- 3:56Speaker 5: and I messed up for a very long period of time.
- 3:58Speaker 6: And so now I act.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Somebody got me a portrait that was done and at
- 4:02Speaker 5: the bottom it says, I don't need to turn it.
- 4:04Speaker 5: It was a phrase that I used to say, I
- 4:06Speaker 5: don't need to turn it down, you need to turn
- 4:07Speaker 5: it up perfect. Yeah, So so I appreciate that. I
- 4:12Speaker 5: really try to be authentic. I'm sure my personality isn't
- 4:16Speaker 5: for everybody, but this is actually who I am and
- 4:19Speaker 5: who I've grown to be.
- 4:22Speaker 3: What's interesting to me about that, you know, being being
- 4:25Speaker 3: an athlete in Hollists and Lisa you you you both
- 4:28Speaker 3: probably can relate to this too. For the most part,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I think people tend to look at you and judge
- 4:36Speaker 3: you sometimes by the way that you you you look,
- 4:40Speaker 3: your mannerisms, all of those kinds of things. The moment
- 4:44Speaker 3: that I saw you in the moment that you walked
- 4:46Speaker 3: in the door, there was there was this genuine, friendly,
- 4:52Speaker 3: outgoing kind of person that there's no way, I don't
- 4:56Speaker 3: know how anybody could.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Even you're making me feel good.
- 5:01Speaker 4: She's starting to blush.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Hard.
- 5:06Speaker 6: My kids are listening.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I'm an easy person, and I think Hollis is probably
- 5:10Speaker 3: an easy person that when you look at it sometimes
- 5:12Speaker 3: you can like there's something about him. I don't like.
- 5:16Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Hollis at least are two people.
- 5:18Speaker 5: And this is a compliment when I say this, they're
- 5:20Speaker 5: easy to love.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I'm still I'm still working on Holland
- 5:27Speaker 3: I'm still at least.
- 5:30Speaker 6: They're easy people to love.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Now, Mayor, you've enduring your administration. You really, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 3: revitalize Charleston. You know, a far as sports is concerned
- 5:40Speaker 3: at high level. So this week we have US cycling
- 5:45Speaker 3: back in Charleston. Why is this an event in particular?
- 5:48Speaker 3: Why is this important to Charleston.
- 5:50Speaker 5: There are a lot of things that we can talk about.
- 5:51Speaker 5: There are sports. Really why it's important to Charleston. Listen,
- 5:54Speaker 5: It is not lost on me. Uh, the excitement, the
- 5:59Speaker 5: national and internet, national recognition, that we get also, but
- 6:02Speaker 5: let me not deceive you. I also you know, before
- 6:05Speaker 5: I was mayor, I was the Commissioner of Tourism for
- 6:08Speaker 5: the State of West Virginia. Tourism people aren't the fun people.
- 6:11Speaker 5: We're the money people, and so the return on investment
- 6:14Speaker 5: that we receive, it's the reason why you know, I'm
- 6:17Speaker 5: such an advocate as the commissioner of ben Slango is
- 6:20Speaker 5: as well for the Capital Sports Complex. I grew up
- 6:22Speaker 5: in a sports family. I played every single sport available
- 6:25Speaker 5: to women, and I played on the men's golf team
- 6:27Speaker 5: growing up because it is number one. It's not just
- 6:31Speaker 5: for body, it's for brain. But now you know, growing
- 6:35Speaker 5: growing so growing up in a household, that's that's what
- 6:38Speaker 5: we did. I mean, yes, we prioritized academics, but we
- 6:43Speaker 5: went to the schools to play, and we went to
- 6:45Speaker 5: certain schools so we could compete and compete at a
- 6:48Speaker 5: very high level. I raised two boys, and one of
- 6:51Speaker 5: my boys is Delegate. Well knows because he was many
- 6:55Speaker 5: times there at the hockey tournaments. Every night, weekend and holiday,
- 7:00Speaker 5: we would be out on the road traveling with them.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Sports is important. It's not just important for individuals. It's
- 7:04Speaker 5: important for a community, because it's important to be involved
- 7:07Speaker 5: in something. Why is USA Cycling important? Any mayor in
- 7:12Speaker 5: any city across the country would say, you mean to
- 7:15Speaker 5: tell me, I'm going to get positive recognition nationally and
- 7:18Speaker 5: internationally for my city, get an unbelievable return on investment
- 7:23Speaker 5: for my hotels. So for our hotels, bars, restaurants, shops.
- 7:28Speaker 6: I mean.
- 7:28Speaker 5: I was at bucking Bet today buying my you know,
- 7:31Speaker 5: Bike City USA T shirt. I went to Black Sheep
- 7:34Speaker 5: to get a rep for lunch because I was running
- 7:35Speaker 5: late to another meeting.
- 7:37Speaker 6: If you could give.
- 7:38Speaker 5: That to any mayor in any city, they say yes, please,
- 7:41Speaker 5: thank you, and please shut the door on your way out.
- 7:43Speaker 6: This is mine now.
- 7:44Speaker 5: By the way, it's competitive. I want people to know
- 7:46Speaker 5: that as well. It wasn't just a hey, this sounds
- 7:49Speaker 5: like a really great thing for us.
- 7:51Speaker 6: It's it's a battle.
- 7:52Speaker 5: This isn't this you know, it's just like the basketball
- 7:55Speaker 5: tournaments or baseball tournaments. This isn't fun in games. This
- 7:58Speaker 5: is what are you going to give me to bring
- 8:00Speaker 5: my tournament to you? And what am I going to
- 8:02Speaker 5: get in return?
- 8:03Speaker 6: USA?
- 8:04Speaker 5: You know, we started with table tennis and we got
- 8:06Speaker 5: a great relationship with USA National Sports right, So it
- 8:09Speaker 5: went table tennis, USA Volleyball, and those relationships spun out
- 8:14Speaker 5: into USA Cycling and an amazing team that we have
- 8:17Speaker 5: here in the city of Charleston. When we were afforded
- 8:19Speaker 5: this opportunity, I will be honest, the most I ever
- 8:22Speaker 5: watched out of any USA Cycling was when we started
- 8:26Speaker 5: to talk about going out for the bid.
- 8:27Speaker 6: I think I told you this. I was like, I
- 8:29Speaker 6: need to get on the.
- 8:30Speaker 5: YouTube, do a little er, let's see what they're doing
- 8:35Speaker 5: in their city. But this is what I do know.
- 8:39Speaker 5: I found out what was important to them.
- 8:41Speaker 6: It's roads.
- 8:42Speaker 5: What was important to them were making sure that you
- 8:45Speaker 5: had the guy from public Works who would go on
- 8:47Speaker 5: the roads and change every grate from this way to
- 8:50Speaker 5: this way. The storm dreams because tires that goes. It
- 8:53Speaker 5: was the details of making sure that we had not
- 8:57Speaker 5: just the you know, the the great city in our
- 9:00Speaker 5: great vibe, but also that we had uh the operational
- 9:04Speaker 5: support that we could go out after it. And when
- 9:06Speaker 5: they you know, I really didn't know all that it
- 9:09Speaker 5: was all that it took, but.
- 9:11Speaker 6: It was a it was a battle.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I mean, it was a battle for other, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 5: cities who really wanted this, so I you know, I
- 9:18Speaker 5: we joke in the you know, senior staff this morning
- 9:20Speaker 5: we were talking about the traffic calls that we were
- 9:22Speaker 5: coming and that they were talking about MAP this morning
- 9:24Speaker 5: and what.
- 9:25Speaker 6: A great app is for the city.
- 9:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a it's an ebb and flow and everybody
- 9:29Speaker 5: has to bend.
- 9:30Speaker 6: It is not it is.
- 9:31Speaker 5: When you bring in an event like this, everybody has
- 9:35Speaker 5: to participate for it to work. And that, by the way,
- 9:38Speaker 5: means the citizens who are not coming to the races,
- 9:41Speaker 5: who are not watching it, who don't give one whip
- 9:44Speaker 5: stitch about it, but it will impact them because you're
- 9:47Speaker 5: going to be tardy to work or you're going to
- 9:49Speaker 5: have to go a different direction.
- 9:52Speaker 4: So you know, it's a small inconvenience for the payoff
- 9:56Speaker 4: in the long run.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Charlsie Is sure has like worldwide implications, right we had,
- 10:03Speaker 3: you know, as far as we had this event last
- 10:05Speaker 3: year and had Olympic indications.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean so, Kristen Faulkner, if anybody watched the Olympics,
- 10:10Speaker 5: we did. And the good thing about this, by the way,
- 10:13Speaker 5: this is a five year contract.
- 10:15Speaker 6: So this wasn't a hey, we're going to come this
- 10:17Speaker 6: year and then.
- 10:18Speaker 5: We're gonna you know, run out of the Yes, big
- 10:21Speaker 5: five year commitment for us, by the way, and that's
- 10:23Speaker 5: big for us. I mean, that's committing our resources for
- 10:25Speaker 5: the next five years.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Can we do it? Can we afford to do it?
- 10:29Speaker 5: And so what is so with the benefit for us
- 10:32Speaker 5: is not only do we get one Olympic cycle, we
- 10:34Speaker 5: get two Olympic cycles. So our time trials were the
- 10:38Speaker 5: qualifier for the Olympics. So the person who won the
- 10:41Speaker 5: time trials had that ticket to Paris. Now that's big city.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Right, that is that's pretty amazing.
- 10:47Speaker 5: So we talk about Kristin Faulkner and as you watched
- 10:50Speaker 5: her with the Eiffel Tower in the background flying underneath
- 10:54Speaker 5: and winning the road race a race and by the way,
- 10:57Speaker 5: she was not originally signed up to ride in but
- 11:00Speaker 5: at the last minute said I feel good today and
- 11:03Speaker 5: I'm gonna go at a separate event. Wasn't even an
- 11:06Speaker 5: event that she initially thought that she had the best
- 11:10Speaker 5: chance of winning, but she did. And so you know
- 11:14Speaker 5: that the road to the Olympics runs through Charleston, West Virginia.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Take it any day.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And what's really cool about this, too, Mayor, is is
- 11:23Speaker 4: that it's growing, right. So this is the second year
- 11:25Speaker 4: for the event in Charleston. I recently saw during a
- 11:29Speaker 4: presser Matthew Sutton, your your chief of staff. He was
- 11:33Speaker 4: giving some information, you know, to to the press about
- 11:36Speaker 4: added activities this year. So it's it's surrounding the cycling event.
- 11:41Speaker 4: So what are some of the added events that have tacked.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I know probably live on the levee. That's new, right,
- 11:46Speaker 4: you added a new extra show.
- 11:47Speaker 5: We added an extra show, and we're going to do
- 11:49Speaker 5: it this Friday, So we're really excited about doing that.
- 11:52Speaker 5: But I will say the biggest, the biggest event that
- 11:55Speaker 5: we added this year was the para cycling. So this morning,
- 12:00Speaker 5: if you were out on the streets of Charleston, you
- 12:02Speaker 5: watched athletes who were amputees. You watch athletes that were blind,
- 12:07Speaker 5: who were hearing impaired, who had other exceptionalities. So I
- 12:11Speaker 5: challenge anyone uh to do the work and the climb
- 12:14Speaker 5: that it takes to compete on that level with exceptionalities.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Come and get you some. It's hard to do.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Now with those athletes with those is this Olympic implications as.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Well, not for those athletes, but it's you know what
- 12:29Speaker 5: is so great about USA Cycling and competing is it
- 12:32Speaker 5: takes you to the next level and qualifying for other
- 12:35Speaker 5: events and so you know, here here's the other things,
- 12:38Speaker 5: which you know, Carl, Carl, I'm fifty for and while
- 12:45Speaker 5: I you know, I do my best and I feel
- 12:48Speaker 5: like I am paying attention. Last year when I got
- 12:52Speaker 5: up on the podium to give the award medals to
- 12:54Speaker 5: some of the young cyclists, when they, you know, they're
- 12:58Speaker 5: on these bikes and they're in their uniform and they've
- 13:00Speaker 5: got their gear on, they got their helmets, they've got
- 13:02Speaker 5: their glasses.
- 13:03Speaker 6: You know, next they're ready to go.
- 13:05Speaker 5: They come on, they get onto the stage and this
- 13:08Speaker 5: young woman, I was floored. Do you think you know
- 13:11Speaker 5: braces glass? He'd put on glasses And I said, how
- 13:15Speaker 5: was it competing?
- 13:16Speaker 6: She said, well, you know it was okay.
- 13:18Speaker 5: I just I had school yesterday.
- 13:21Speaker 6: And I said to her, honey, how old are you?
- 13:24Speaker 5: She said, I'm fourteen, and so we're going to go
- 13:28Speaker 5: back with our My mom and my aunt came to
- 13:31Speaker 5: and I was just like and I was just like,
- 13:34Speaker 5: you are a young one, you are a this is
- 13:37Speaker 5: an Olympic athlete. So this fourteen year old, by the way, said.
- 13:40Speaker 5: I said to her, as I'm putting the metal, you're
- 13:43Speaker 5: coming back. Oh yeah, I'll be back. I'm going to
- 13:45Speaker 5: be back because you've got the Olympics. I'm gonna I'm
- 13:48Speaker 5: gonna try to be in the Olympics.
- 13:50Speaker 6: I was like, what are you saying?
- 13:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what you're saying.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Yes, well she does because you see her on that
- 13:57Speaker 5: bike and she knows. And we talked a little bit
- 13:59Speaker 5: about this in the green room too. I think that
- 14:01Speaker 5: things can be learned and think, I mean, you know,
- 14:03Speaker 5: you can just learn it, you can.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Be taught it.
- 14:06Speaker 5: It probably has something to do with who you are inside,
- 14:09Speaker 5: right that that person, that thing, she's got it. All
- 14:12Speaker 5: she has to do is get on that bike and
- 14:14Speaker 5: you go, oh, I see it, I see what you
- 14:16Speaker 5: are shining right there. It comes clear when you watch
- 14:20Speaker 5: these athletes compete, they're at a different level. So when
- 14:23Speaker 5: we were we were also talking about medical teams, because
- 14:27Speaker 5: remember we've got a whole big medical team to thank
- 14:30Speaker 5: you to c AMC and all.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Of their all of their support.
- 14:34Speaker 5: But we were talking about okay, so when a physician said,
- 14:38Speaker 5: when do we know when we come in the ropes
- 14:40Speaker 5: the gates, When do we know if a cyclist falls,
- 14:44Speaker 5: and the USA looked at us like, you don't.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Really, oh, but but what if here she falls, We'll
- 14:51Speaker 6: let you know.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Okay, okay, what if they're really injured, We'll let you
- 14:54Speaker 5: know because they do have concussion protocol They have lots
- 14:56Speaker 5: of protocols. What he said, I'll give you for an example.
- 15:00Speaker 5: We won't give names here of these cyclists, but there
- 15:03Speaker 5: is an elite cyclists, male, young male who they talked
- 15:07Speaker 5: about when you know, you know, who flipped off his bike,
- 15:09Speaker 5: who obviously had broken his thought he had broken his
- 15:14Speaker 5: wrist or hand, took all of the skin sorry everybody listening,
- 15:18Speaker 5: took his skin off, gone from his knee all the
- 15:20Speaker 5: way down to his ankle, completely gone in one and
- 15:23Speaker 5: a half parts of his leg. Got back on the cycle,
- 15:27Speaker 5: continued to ride, went to his car. By the way,
- 15:29Speaker 5: you can't touch your car, your support car, you're not
- 15:32Speaker 5: allowed to touch it.
- 15:34Speaker 6: There's lots of rules that.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Go into this. I'm learning every single day. But he
- 15:37Speaker 5: leaned his hand and then said, just make sure it's
- 15:39Speaker 5: not broken. They looked at it and said I think
- 15:43Speaker 5: you're okay.
- 15:45Speaker 6: I think you're okay.
- 15:47Speaker 5: And before they could say I think you're okay, he's gone,
- 15:50Speaker 5: and he came in second. This is after tumbling, you know,
- 15:53Speaker 5: head over teacups. As my mom used to say, these
- 15:56Speaker 5: are athletes beyond what we look at. So you think
- 16:00Speaker 5: like this was his moment, this was his time in
- 16:03Speaker 5: this racis wasn't in Charleston, West Virginia. But these cyclists,
- 16:07Speaker 5: as we watched Kristin Faulkner as well crash on national television. Uh,
- 16:12Speaker 5: this is a just as you get hit on the
- 16:15Speaker 5: football field, just as you get taken down on the courts.
- 16:17Speaker 5: This is the way of their life. This is what
- 16:20Speaker 5: they train for, This is what they do. This is
- 16:22Speaker 5: when I tell people who are thinking about coming, you
- 16:26Speaker 5: won't see this unless you're here. This isn't This isn't
- 16:30Speaker 5: like a regular you know, hey, we're cyclist. Oh, these
- 16:34Speaker 5: are top level cyclists that are true.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's a I think that's important too,
- 16:39Speaker 3: to throw that athlete on there, because you people want
- 16:44Speaker 3: to separate athletes and put him into this thing compartment. Yes,
- 16:48Speaker 3: if you're doing something that requires movement, that is I
- 16:52Speaker 3: would consider athletic period. You're an athlete. And the thing
- 16:57Speaker 3: is with the terrain of this area, you're yes uphill,
- 17:00Speaker 3: you go downhill, you go on a round curves. I mean,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I was there last year downtown in the speed in
- 17:05Speaker 3: which those guys and women are hitting those curves believable,
- 17:09Speaker 3: unbelievable making until you go in.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Person, don't know how because I wasn't sold on it.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I'll I'll be honest, mayor. I thought, oh, bike racing,
- 17:18Speaker 4: How excited by? Can that be right? I mean really seriously?
- 17:22Speaker 4: And so then my husband and I decided to go
- 17:24Speaker 4: check it out and we were just we were stunned
- 17:26Speaker 4: in awe when those guys go by. I mean that
- 17:28Speaker 4: that the sound, the motion, just all of it. I mean,
- 17:32Speaker 4: it is really exciting. I mean, I'm telling you, if
- 17:35Speaker 4: you have not attended this event, you really need to
- 17:37Speaker 4: give it a shot.
- 17:38Speaker 5: So Carl I asked one of the athletes that I said,
- 17:40Speaker 5: can you hear us? Can you hear the bells? Can
- 17:42Speaker 5: you hear the whistles? Can you hear the screams? The
- 17:43Speaker 5: answer is no. I'm completely focused on what I need
- 17:47Speaker 5: to do, on my breath, on my feet, on my
- 17:51Speaker 5: hands position, and I am taking in everybody around me,
- 17:55Speaker 5: beside me, behind me, and in front of me, and
- 17:57Speaker 5: what my pace is. I can't hear you. I appreciate
- 18:00Speaker 5: it's so nice. Thank you for ringing your cow bells.
- 18:02Speaker 6: I appreciate it, but.
- 18:04Speaker 5: I'm not listening to you. The thing so that was
- 18:06Speaker 5: that was a shock to me, like, oh, well, I'm
- 18:08Speaker 5: screaming really loud for you.
- 18:10Speaker 6: That's number one.
- 18:11Speaker 5: But we had one complaint, one complaint universally from especially
- 18:15Speaker 5: our top tier and especially our top mail writer Brandon,
- 18:21Speaker 5: who said, when they asked him, what did you think
- 18:23Speaker 5: about the course? He said, it is one of the hardest,
- 18:25Speaker 5: specially Bridge Road, just one of the hardest courses I've
- 18:29Speaker 5: ever done. In fact, it was probably it was probably
- 18:31Speaker 5: too hard. It was too hard because you go up
- 18:34Speaker 5: and down Bridge Road like it is your job, because oh,
- 18:37Speaker 5: by the way, it is.
- 18:39Speaker 6: It is, girl, it is your job.
- 18:41Speaker 5: And you go up that, you know, nine times, uh,
- 18:44Speaker 5: ten times, eleven times as fast as you possibly can.
- 18:50Speaker 5: The unbelievable these athletes are. And the other thing, if
- 18:54Speaker 5: you try to get an airbnb in town, you can't, like,
- 18:58Speaker 5: don't don't even try. You're locked down out why something.
- 19:01Speaker 5: I also didn't know they sleep with their bikes. And
- 19:04Speaker 5: this is what I mean by saying it that funny visual.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Oh, here we go.
- 19:08Speaker 5: But before they get into bed and the moment they
- 19:10Speaker 5: get up, they're on it right, positioning, loosening up, getting
- 19:16Speaker 5: your juices flowing in the morning. And plus these bikes
- 19:19Speaker 5: are tens of thousands of dollars. We're not leaving a
- 19:23Speaker 5: bike in a trailer. We're not leaving the bike in
- 19:25Speaker 5: the back of your car or in the back of
- 19:27Speaker 5: a truck.
- 19:27Speaker 3: And you didn't go You didn't just go up up
- 19:29Speaker 3: the street and buy that bike the custom Let me
- 19:34Speaker 3: ask this. So if I'm a spectator, I have I
- 19:36Speaker 3: didn't get to go last year. I want to go
- 19:38Speaker 3: this year. Where should I set up? Where is like
- 19:41Speaker 3: the best spot to see as much as I can see? Yeah?
- 19:45Speaker 3: What day?
- 19:46Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:46Speaker 6: Sure? So Lisa brought this up a little bit as well.
- 19:49Speaker 5: We're adding things because you only know what you know
- 19:51Speaker 5: now we know city Center at slack Plaza, live music,
- 19:54Speaker 5: more food, more activities for the littles as well. So Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 20:00Speaker 5: well ready, I mean you know tomorrow there'll be there'll
- 20:03Speaker 5: be some continuation of the paracycling again. You want to
- 20:07Speaker 5: you want to see somebody who has overcome life's most
- 20:10Speaker 5: significant challenges. Get out there tomorrow at nine o'clock and
- 20:13Speaker 5: watch those time trials up and down the boulevard. Okay,
- 20:16Speaker 5: so in the morning starting at nine, go ahead, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 20:20Speaker 5: Sunday and Monday. You're going to especially on Thursday and Friday,
- 20:23Speaker 5: you're gonna want to be at City Center at Slack Plaza.
- 20:26Speaker 6: You're going to want to be there as.
- 20:28Speaker 5: The cowbells are going and the music is playing and
- 20:30Speaker 5: they are zig zanging watching the pace car alone.
- 20:34Speaker 6: Yeah, and say too.
- 20:37Speaker 5: I'm not one of those girls like, oh no, thank you,
- 20:39Speaker 5: I'm in like, let's go. I did it once, I
- 20:44Speaker 5: will never do it again. I will eat your shoes
- 20:46Speaker 5: and your hat before I do it again.
- 20:48Speaker 6: And I'm not assisting.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Now, what time on Thursday and Friday should people start
- 20:51Speaker 3: thank you? Being well?
- 20:53Speaker 6: You know, I hate to I hate to say this early.
- 20:57Speaker 5: I mean the music is going to start playing at four,
- 21:00Speaker 5: you know, three point thirty four. If you want to
- 21:02Speaker 5: have a late you know, or early dinner or super
- 21:04Speaker 5: late lunch. The bridge Road is going to be insane
- 21:08Speaker 5: on Sunday and all.
- 21:10Speaker 3: That's where we were last day.
- 21:11Speaker 4: It was it was it was unbelievable. We set up
- 21:14Speaker 4: in front of Lolas and it was perfect, sane.
- 21:16Speaker 6: But you know what's so cool too.
- 21:17Speaker 5: I mean I have to give a shout out to
- 21:19Speaker 5: our businesses and I don't know if that's okay on
- 21:21Speaker 5: the absolutely, But what is so interesting we These weren't
- 21:25Speaker 5: things that we also asked of our businesses.
- 21:29Speaker 6: They just did it on their own.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Scott Petted at Pettit Jewelry did a custom one of
- 21:35Speaker 5: a kind USA Cycling Charleston charm at the jewelry shop.
- 21:41Speaker 5: You know Ellen's ice Cream made a Criterium crunch ice cream.
- 21:46Speaker 5: You know Button Buck and Betty I bought mine today.
- 21:49Speaker 5: You know the Bike City us A T shirts, so
- 21:52Speaker 5: small businesses of the Roadie road Beer that that wife
- 21:56Speaker 5: and others are Black Sheep are selling.
- 21:58Speaker 6: They're in it.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Because this is what is so unbelievably cool about our community.
- 22:03Speaker 5: Nobody knew last year what we were doing, but they
- 22:06Speaker 5: were in And that's what I love about us. We're
- 22:09Speaker 5: doing something special for our community. We want to show off.
- 22:11Speaker 5: It's kind of like when guests come over, don't take
- 22:14Speaker 5: the good plates, wait till everybody eats.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Don't take a good plate. Don't take a good plate.
- 22:19Speaker 6: Wait till everybody have.
- 22:20Speaker 5: You know, we kind of put on fresh flowers on
- 22:22Speaker 5: the table and we put on our best. That's what
- 22:24Speaker 5: everybody did and what all of our small businesses did,
- 22:28Speaker 5: which made it so much easier for us. When we
- 22:31Speaker 5: were pitching, we had a group of cyclists, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 5: teddy Arnbreckt and Todd Goldman and Jack Hoblitzel who we
- 22:39Speaker 5: brought to the meeting. Who and Tim Brady, our CEO
- 22:42Speaker 5: of the Convention of Visitors Bureau, who really is a
- 22:45Speaker 5: wonderful captain for us in this venture. He brought the
- 22:48Speaker 5: guys who ride the roads, Todd Dorcas, Hey, talk to
- 22:50Speaker 5: him about talk to him about it. My response was,
- 22:54Speaker 5: we'll do anything that you need us to do to
- 22:56Speaker 5: make this happen. That was my response, like what do
- 22:59Speaker 5: we get? What do you what do you need us
- 23:01Speaker 5: to make this happen? Because when I watched Nashville and
- 23:04Speaker 5: I'm watching these other cities, I thought.
- 23:05Speaker 6: We can do that, right, it can be big boys
- 23:09Speaker 6: and girls, We can do it.
- 23:10Speaker 3: I know we're running short on time, and I just
- 23:11Speaker 3: want to ask. This's like you talked about. We brought
- 23:13Speaker 3: us a volleyball us a table to the Junior Olympic boxing.
- 23:17Speaker 3: You had that here, we have a tvt we have
- 23:19Speaker 3: a strong Man cut, now we have US cycling. So
- 23:22Speaker 3: what is Mayor good When's dream event in the basketball
- 23:26Speaker 3: tournament too? I forgot to mention that, what's Mayor Goodwin's
- 23:28Speaker 3: dream event for Charleston, West Virginia. What if you could
- 23:32Speaker 3: just have the magic wand and say hey, we're going
- 23:34Speaker 3: to do this, We're going to bring this here. What's
- 23:36Speaker 3: what's that event for you?
- 23:37Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 23:38Speaker 5: So it's actually not an event, It is a movement, Okay.
- 23:42Speaker 5: So what I want to see is I want to
- 23:45Speaker 5: see little girls and little boys get to compete and
- 23:49Speaker 5: play on surfaces and in facilities that other kids and
- 23:52Speaker 5: other states get to participated because you know what is
- 23:57Speaker 5: not okay, It is not okay. And what I love, love, love,
- 24:00Speaker 5: love love. You know, we turfed eleven fields in the
- 24:03Speaker 5: past six years. Why is that important? Because when you
- 24:05Speaker 5: go and you watch the little Powderpuff girls and you
- 24:10Speaker 5: watch them play, they now get to compete on a
- 24:12Speaker 5: surface and a playing field that other girls in other
- 24:15Speaker 5: states are playing on every single second of every single day.
- 24:18Speaker 5: And now they can compete at that level. That's what
- 24:21Speaker 5: I want, And so it's not just about the sports complex,
- 24:23Speaker 5: it's not just about inspiring young athletes. I was so
- 24:27Speaker 5: fortunate in my life to be able to see so
- 24:29Speaker 5: many wonderful and powerful athletes in my career watching them play.
- 24:34Speaker 5: But I want us to have facilities and opportunities for
- 24:37Speaker 5: our kids to be able to think I can do that,
- 24:40Speaker 5: to see it, to be it, but actually mean it,
- 24:42Speaker 5: not just say it that's a bumper sticker. You know,
- 24:44Speaker 5: you got to see it to be it. I want
- 24:46Speaker 5: you to be able to play on that surface. I
- 24:47Speaker 5: want you to be able to have seventy two volleyball
- 24:50Speaker 5: teams game on I want that for our girls so
- 24:54Speaker 5: they don't have to travel to Columbus or Pittsburgh or
- 24:56Speaker 5: Cincinnati to play with those Have those girls come in
- 25:00Speaker 5: play with you here. So well, it's not one event,
- 25:03Speaker 5: I mean, you know that's what I want. It is
- 25:06Speaker 5: much bigger than one single event.
- 25:09Speaker 3: That's awesome, And that's what we would just talk about.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Far as facilities you're looking at, So you know I've
- 25:14Speaker 3: paid since then track and field at the high school
- 25:16Speaker 3: level around the nation, and you're looking at some of
- 25:18Speaker 3: these athletes and some of these times that they're running,
- 25:20Speaker 3: and it's really it's related to having those facilities so
- 25:24Speaker 3: they can you know, get the best out of those
- 25:25Speaker 3: youth athletes.
- 25:26Speaker 5: That's right, for sure, that's right. It's important. It is
- 25:28Speaker 5: important to give them the equipment. And you know, it's
- 25:31Speaker 5: Carl and I were talking about as we were coming
- 25:33Speaker 5: down from the green room. I still believe that, yeah,
- 25:37Speaker 5: there might be, it might be something right in your core,
- 25:40Speaker 5: in your gut of who you are and your makeup.
- 25:43Speaker 5: But I think giving opportunity and having people like this
- 25:47Speaker 5: guy and this guy and this grow in front of
- 25:49Speaker 5: them doing things and mentoring them has it's it's important.
- 25:55Speaker 5: It's it might be just as important. Just as in Orton.
- 26:00Speaker 6: You know, I went home. I had to go.
- 26:03Speaker 5: I had to go home and be with my mom
- 26:06Speaker 5: over the past couple of days and my dad, who
- 26:10Speaker 5: played golf his entire adult adult career and professionally for
- 26:13Speaker 5: a little bit, I went to go hit golf balls
- 26:15Speaker 5: with him, just to blow.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Up some steam.
- 26:18Speaker 5: And if I could have my dad standing behind me
- 26:22Speaker 5: and mentoring me every single time I went out to
- 26:25Speaker 5: play golf, I would be I'd be scratch golfer today,
- 26:29Speaker 5: because it does matter who's in your ear. It does
- 26:32Speaker 5: matter who's standing behind you. Because I said to him, Dad,
- 26:34Speaker 5: I can't, I can't, I can't get this new because
- 26:37Speaker 5: it just for my birthday.
- 26:38Speaker 6: He got me new clops. I'm the baby of the family.
- 26:41Speaker 6: Can you tell me for my dad?
- 26:43Speaker 4: For my shirt day? I'm fifty four.
- 26:45Speaker 6: My dad's still buying me day.
- 26:48Speaker 5: But it does matter to have the right person who
- 26:51Speaker 5: cares about you, who cares about your development. And oh,
- 26:54Speaker 5: by the way, who's not easy on your right?
- 26:57Speaker 6: Why are you standing?
- 26:58Speaker 5: Stop going on your haels? Why are you on your hails?
- 27:00Speaker 5: Stop getting on your hails? You did it again? Do
- 27:02Speaker 5: it again?
- 27:03Speaker 6: I mean again.
- 27:04Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, guy, the guy behind us is going
- 27:07Speaker 5: to be like, why is that old guy being mean
- 27:09Speaker 5: to that girl over there? But it does matter. It
- 27:12Speaker 5: matters who's around you and who you surround yourself with.
- 27:15Speaker 5: But I'm telling this crew, this crew knows better than
- 27:17Speaker 5: I even do. But but having you know, having USA
- 27:21Speaker 5: Cycling has been monumental for the city of Charleston. That
- 27:24Speaker 5: we get it not only this year, but another three
- 27:26Speaker 5: years after that and get to watch America's Olympic athletes.
- 27:32Speaker 5: And that's what's And drive our economy and be here
- 27:36Speaker 5: and love what we do. And oh, by the way,
- 27:38Speaker 5: many of them were here last week and the week
- 27:40Speaker 5: before be trained and Sam, they were training, and they
- 27:44Speaker 5: were there because that's also what's important and for us
- 27:47Speaker 5: to be a bike city and to be known as
- 27:49Speaker 5: that and something positive. You do this every day in
- 27:52Speaker 5: your work, delegate, that you try to push positive for
- 27:54Speaker 5: the state of West Virginia. We you know, our chips
- 27:56Speaker 5: on our shoulder or this high, this high, this high right,
- 27:59Speaker 5: we have about who we are and what we've come from.
- 28:02Speaker 6: And I think to have.
- 28:04Speaker 5: This, to be able to stick our chest out a
- 28:07Speaker 5: little farther and put ours to say our peacock feathers out,
- 28:10Speaker 5: makes me very very proud that we get the opportunity
- 28:13Speaker 5: to do that.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely, mayor we appreciate you, appreciate it. We may
- 28:19Speaker 3: you come back.
- 28:24Speaker 4: I hope Mother Nature's kind to the event this week,
- 28:27Speaker 4: but let's keep our fingers crossed.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Well, I will say to you, if you watch the
- 28:30Speaker 5: Criterion last year, it doesn't matter to them.
- 28:35Speaker 4: It's probably better training for them, to be honest, right.
- 28:37Speaker 6: It doesn't matter to them.
- 28:39Speaker 5: They will ride as hard and as fast if it
- 28:42Speaker 5: is pouring down sideways because by the way it was,
- 28:45Speaker 5: it was it.
- 28:46Speaker 6: Was some of the worst conditions. But it's training.
- 28:48Speaker 3: It's where I do.
- 28:49Speaker 4: That's what they do.
- 28:50Speaker 6: That's what they do.
- 28:51Speaker 5: Thank you, sir, Thank you so much.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, we'll be right back, all right, catch
- 28:59Speaker 3: a kidd.

- 30:25Speaker 2: Now back to the conversation. What's going on?
- 30:30Speaker 1: Guys?
- 30:30Speaker 3: This Hollis, Who's welcome back? We have another special guests.
- 30:35Speaker 3: We have West Virginia State University, All American, All Marriage
- 30:41Speaker 3: and All Conference track and field athlete Candice Morris. How
- 30:45Speaker 3: you doing, I'm good, Hollis. Let me let me ask you.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Let me ask you a question. Because because I'm gonna
- 30:52Speaker 3: I'm gonna test your I'm gonna test you here a
- 30:54Speaker 3: little bit when it comes to when it comes to
- 30:57Speaker 3: All American. Yeah, define that because for the for for
- 31:01Speaker 3: folks who just like have heard that, like when you
- 31:04Speaker 3: when you're an All American, they've just heard it and
- 31:06Speaker 3: they don't necessarily know exactly what it means. Can you
- 31:12Speaker 3: can you can you give? It means out of all
- 31:15Speaker 3: the thousands of athletes that play or participate in the
- 31:19Speaker 3: particular sports, all the hundreds of schools that have that sports,
- 31:23Speaker 3: that you are one of the best, if not the
- 31:25Speaker 3: best athlete in that particular category or sport. So it's
- 31:30Speaker 3: really a finite small small athletes within collegiate sports. And
- 31:35Speaker 3: you have you have performed, if you've earned the spot
- 31:38Speaker 3: of being in the top category, and that is something
- 31:41Speaker 3: that nobody can ever take away right away from. Okay,
- 31:45Speaker 3: so we go. I just wanted to make sure we
- 31:47Speaker 3: got a definition of it. Really, go ahead, Lisa, that
- 31:51Speaker 3: is so awesome.
- 31:52Speaker 4: I'm so impressed. What is your event actually your specific
- 31:56Speaker 4: event that you are good? You know, we're good at
- 31:59Speaker 4: a run.
- 31:59Speaker 10: The six d, the one hundred, the two hundred, the
- 32:03Speaker 10: four hundred four one.
- 32:05Speaker 3: And the four four Okay, Now the sixty meter, that's
- 32:07Speaker 3: that's the indoor speaking to the speaking to the Yeah.
- 32:09Speaker 4: So the sixty out of indoors listening, I can't breath.
- 32:13Speaker 3: So far as the All American distinction, that was All
- 32:16Speaker 3: American for the indoor track season, Am I correct? Yes,
- 32:19Speaker 3: that's a sixty yeah. So, and just for those who
- 32:22Speaker 3: don't know, you have an indoor and outdoor season as
- 32:24Speaker 3: far as track can feel is concerned. Okay, and you
- 32:28Speaker 3: just wrapped up your sophomore season, and I think we
- 32:30Speaker 3: did pretty well at the conference meeting in my correct,
- 32:33Speaker 3: So what happened there?
- 32:36Speaker 10: I broke the record in the two hundred, and we
- 32:38Speaker 10: broke the record in the four x one in the four.
- 32:41Speaker 6: X four, my goodness.
- 32:43Speaker 3: And I think the All Regional team just came out.
- 32:45Speaker 3: You made All Regional team. So I was I was
- 32:49Speaker 3: a I was a I was a track guy and
- 32:52Speaker 3: ran track, but I was never an elite runner. You know.
- 32:56Speaker 3: It didn't like I wasn't going to ever win one
- 32:58Speaker 3: hundred or two hundred. Give me a little bit of
- 33:03Speaker 3: background on like what did you do? Was there anything
- 33:08Speaker 3: specifically that you do or did that helped you get
- 33:12Speaker 3: to this place and or are you just is this
- 33:18Speaker 3: just a talent that you have discovered?
- 33:21Speaker 10: Well, I started running track when I was seven. I
- 33:24Speaker 10: ran with the Capital City Striter and then after that
- 33:28Speaker 10: I started running in middle school and then carried on
- 33:31Speaker 10: too high school. And then they had started a track
- 33:34Speaker 10: program at State, and I didn't want to go too
- 33:36Speaker 10: far from home yet, so I committed there. And then
- 33:39Speaker 10: my freshman year didn't go the way I wanted it
- 33:42Speaker 10: to go. So then I trained all summer so my
- 33:44Speaker 10: sophomore year could go the way I wanted it to be.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Go ahead, Hollis now as far as that. So you
- 33:52Speaker 3: spent the first two years at West Virginia State University. Again,
- 33:55Speaker 3: you've had a monumental success, particularly in the emphasy of
- 33:59Speaker 3: a newly resurrected track program. But you are hitting the
- 34:05Speaker 3: transfer portal, as it were, and a lot of the
- 34:07Speaker 3: kids are doing uh these days what again? And you
- 34:11Speaker 3: can go as far as you want into it. What
- 34:13Speaker 3: drove that decision to uh to take your talents elsewhere?
- 34:17Speaker 10: Well, I kind of wanted to leave anyways because it
- 34:21Speaker 10: doesn't really have like we don't have a track, so
- 34:25Speaker 10: and I didn't see it as getting a track anytime soon.
- 34:28Speaker 10: By the time we got a track, I'd probably be
- 34:29Speaker 10: out of college. So it's like it's not really worth it.
- 34:32Speaker 4: That's pretty important.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Facilities, Yeah, facilities, and again so it came down to facilities.
- 34:38Speaker 10: Yeah, facilities, and then like money, they had cut our
- 34:41Speaker 10: scholarship money, which I mean that wouldn't have affected me
- 34:44Speaker 10: because I'm an estate student. It was like everybody I
- 34:46Speaker 10: ran track with from my freshman year with leaving and
- 34:50Speaker 10: I would have been with a whole new team.
- 34:52Speaker 3: So it's like, okay, so was that part of like
- 34:56Speaker 3: the four by four by one or four x two
- 34:59Speaker 3: that with that have impacted those teams?
- 35:01Speaker 10: Yeah, both teams are gone.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Wow. And as far as that, like you know, in
- 35:06Speaker 3: track and field, because I think we pretty much like
- 35:08Speaker 3: West Virginia State University, that is, we dominated far as
- 35:12Speaker 3: you know, our conference meet as far as the athletes
- 35:15Speaker 3: that we had, but because we don't have a large number,
- 35:18Speaker 3: it was hard for to get a team championship because
- 35:20Speaker 3: we don't have like the distance runners and different things
- 35:23Speaker 3: of that nature. Because if you look at it, you know,
- 35:25Speaker 3: some of the field the shot put, the discus, the
- 35:28Speaker 3: sprinting events, the sort of those middle eight hundred, four
- 35:31Speaker 3: hundred races, we did really really well on both sides
- 35:34Speaker 3: of men and women.
- 35:35Speaker 10: Yeah, well, that's what it came down to, because it's
- 35:37Speaker 10: like we're supposed to have sixty people on the team,
- 35:40Speaker 10: and they cut the scholarship money, so we weren't able
- 35:43Speaker 10: to have as many people as we thought we would,
- 35:45Speaker 10: so that we couldn't win a conference championship because of that.
- 35:50Speaker 4: And how has that affected your like your ability to train, Like,
- 35:54Speaker 4: since you don't have a track, where, how did you
- 35:56Speaker 4: compensate as far as being able to get in shape
- 35:59Speaker 4: and keep in shape for all of these different events
- 36:01Speaker 4: that you had coming up.
- 36:03Speaker 10: Well, we'd go back and forth between lately in St. Albans,
- 36:07Speaker 10: Saint Albans is a terrible track, like honesty, we say that,
- 36:16Speaker 10: and then lately lately it is good, but there's better tracks.
- 36:20Speaker 10: But we just had to go there really early in
- 36:22Speaker 10: the morning because you see, would be practicing there in
- 36:24Speaker 10: the afternoon. And at other schools they have tracks on
- 36:27Speaker 10: campus so they don't have to practice in thirty degree
- 36:30Speaker 10: weather between ages twenty five, Like, I didn't.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Like that, so what so again again you again, you're
- 36:37Speaker 3: all American all Regional, all conference. You you've done and
- 36:41Speaker 3: when you you've broken numerous conference and state records West
- 36:47Speaker 3: Virginia State University, that is records, school records. So where
- 36:50Speaker 3: were you thinking about? Where's the next landing spot? Put
- 36:57Speaker 3: it on the spot.
- 37:00Speaker 10: I mean, I just I'm having to make a decision
- 37:03Speaker 10: on if I want to go D one or D
- 37:04Speaker 10: two or not.
- 37:05Speaker 3: That's really what it comes Well, let me ask this
- 37:07Speaker 3: question since he's already kind of opened it up. Since
- 37:10Speaker 3: you said D one or D two, I have to
- 37:12Speaker 3: assume that there's some D ones out there that are interested. Yes, okay,
- 37:18Speaker 3: what what are you particularly looking for? Not necessarily saying
- 37:22Speaker 3: the school, but what what would be your What would
- 37:25Speaker 3: be the perfect scenario for you to walk into a
- 37:29Speaker 3: D one D two school that has everything that you
- 37:33Speaker 3: think you want? What are those things that you think
- 37:35Speaker 3: you want and need?
- 37:36Speaker 10: Well, I know I want to go to another HBCU.
- 37:39Speaker 10: I know that. Okay, that's what I've really been looking into.
- 37:42Speaker 10: So that's probably where I'll go. I have an idea
- 37:44Speaker 10: where I'm going to go. It just comes down to
- 37:46Speaker 10: like scholarship money.
- 37:48Speaker 3: Right, Okay, sorry, So as far as facilities are concerned,
- 37:52Speaker 3: is that's something that you're definitely like looking at and analyzing.
- 37:55Speaker 10: Yeah, the schools that told me they don't have no track.
- 37:58Speaker 3: They're out and that's and that's and you know, and
- 38:02Speaker 3: that's you know, that's a that's kind of a really
- 38:05Speaker 3: a bad thing that you would have to have that
- 38:09Speaker 3: you know, that be on in your mind as and
- 38:13Speaker 3: justifiably a reason why you would leave West Virginia State University.
- 38:18Speaker 3: I think I think that's a bad I mean, that's
- 38:21Speaker 3: a bad sign, you know, I just you know, I
- 38:25Speaker 3: think but but you but obviously to where you want
- 38:29Speaker 3: to go, what you want to be, You're you're in
- 38:33Speaker 3: a situation that you are forced to go. Yeah, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 3: so I don't think there's nothing that anybody could remotely
- 38:40Speaker 3: judge you on other than making a very very smart
- 38:43Speaker 3: decision and finding a place to where you can be
- 38:46Speaker 3: even better.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you've obviously already let your coaching people know that
- 38:50Speaker 4: you know, you're you're leaving. At what was their reaction?
- 38:53Speaker 4: I'm sure it was probably a little bit of a
- 38:55Speaker 4: mixture of sadness And tell me about that process. So
- 39:00Speaker 4: was it if.
- 39:01Speaker 3: You can only see the face, I.
- 39:04Speaker 10: Think a lot of people are trying to convince me
- 39:06Speaker 10: yes I can their good but right right.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Yeah, see, and and and I talk about transfer and
- 39:14Speaker 3: all that, and I think like, there are a lot
- 39:16Speaker 3: of transfers that are and I'll say for the benefit
- 39:22Speaker 3: of the athlete, but it may not help them. Okay, Yeah,
- 39:25Speaker 3: that makes you know what I'm saying. They just want
- 39:27Speaker 3: to leave and it may benefit them, but it's not
- 39:31Speaker 3: necessarily going to be beneficial for them in this particular situation.
- 39:36Speaker 4: This is a whole difference.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Yeah, this is a totally different situation to where anybody
- 39:42Speaker 3: who hears the whole story and understands. And if I'm
- 39:47Speaker 3: at the school, if I'm the coach, I'm like, hey,
- 39:49Speaker 3: I'm sorry, and I wish you the best of luck.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Let me know if I can do anything for you. Yeah,
- 39:54Speaker 3: I might be like it, but I also might be like, look,
- 40:00Speaker 3: talk about just being a legend, trying to sell you
- 40:04Speaker 3: something else. And I do I see that. I can
- 40:07Speaker 3: see the coaches, you know, because you may not understand
- 40:11Speaker 3: and and maybe you do when you're this athlete, yeah,
- 40:15Speaker 3: and you that means you're that athlete for that team. Okay.
- 40:20Speaker 3: And and if I'm a coach and that athlete is
- 40:26Speaker 3: legitimately being short changed and I can't help you. Yeah,
- 40:31Speaker 3: you're right, you know what I'm saying. Like, I just
- 40:34Speaker 3: think that it would be extremely difficult for me to
- 40:37Speaker 3: know that I have to let you go. So so
- 40:40Speaker 3: let me ask you this, and I'm gonna get in
- 40:41Speaker 3: your pocket a little bit. So for for tracking, we
- 40:45Speaker 3: hear about the nil money for like track athlete excuse me,
- 40:48Speaker 3: basketball athletes, football athletes, and different things of that nature.
- 40:50Speaker 3: As far as it's track and field, not you personally
- 40:52Speaker 3: per se, it is n I L kind of a
- 40:55Speaker 3: factor in like track and field has it stands today? Wait,
- 41:02Speaker 3: what do you mean like n I L. Like you know,
- 41:04Speaker 3: at a D one level, are they are those athletes
- 41:07Speaker 3: being compensated? Like similar to what like the football and
- 41:09Speaker 3: basketball players are being compensated.
- 41:13Speaker 10: I could say, yes, but not as much, not as much.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, let me ask you to something to her
- 41:22Speaker 3: point of saying, maybe not at the level as basketball
- 41:26Speaker 3: or football. That's why I think it has to be.
- 41:32Speaker 3: It has to be across the board. Everybody at whatever
- 41:36Speaker 3: level you transfer this is this is the top money
- 41:39Speaker 3: that you could get, and the only person who gets
- 41:41Speaker 3: that is the top athletes. And then you go, then
- 41:44Speaker 3: it goes down because again, you can have a top
- 41:47Speaker 3: athlete who's gonna go to maybe a go to a
- 41:50Speaker 3: D one school, D two school and change the dynamics there.
- 41:55Speaker 3: You know, I'm already I'm already making the case that
- 41:57Speaker 3: you're gonna change the dynamics. You already did it. Yeah,
- 41:59Speaker 3: you've already done it at State. So you're going to
- 42:01Speaker 3: change those dynamics. And the NIL money, if it's small,
- 42:08Speaker 3: that's unfair because I don't think see I don't think
- 42:12Speaker 3: I think NIL should actually come whether it's the donor
- 42:17Speaker 3: should bring that into the school and the school should
- 42:21Speaker 3: break that out based on athletes in every single sport.
- 42:26Speaker 4: You want to go ahead, Well, I was just going
- 42:28Speaker 4: to say I think that you're you're you're right. I mean, morally,
- 42:32Speaker 4: that's the way that it should work. But I think
- 42:34Speaker 4: what happens is the school was looking at the sports
- 42:36Speaker 4: that bring in bringing the revenue, and that's who the athletes.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Those are the athletes that are going to be compensated
- 42:42Speaker 4: more because they bring in more revenue for the school.
- 42:44Speaker 4: I'm not saying that's right or wrong. I'm just saying
- 42:46Speaker 4: that's that's probably the bottom line. Like everything else in
- 42:49Speaker 4: this this you know world is it's all about the money.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the NCAA unfortunately they forfeited that
- 42:57Speaker 3: sort of scenario, which probably would have been a little
- 42:59Speaker 3: bit good excuse me, a little bit better than what's
- 43:01Speaker 3: currently going on, because the money's coming from third parties, right,
- 43:04Speaker 3: So if I'm the third party, I can earmark said
- 43:07Speaker 3: funds and I can say, hey, I want just to
- 43:09Speaker 3: go to X y Z. So unfortunately, I think the
- 43:12Speaker 3: problem is the way the money is coming in. That's
- 43:15Speaker 3: the problem market. It's ear market or like I said,
- 43:18Speaker 3: it's just not coming in from like then the nc DOUBA,
- 43:21Speaker 3: where they would probably have to be a little bit
- 43:23Speaker 3: more equival the distribution of it. So but Candice, so,
- 43:27Speaker 3: what what is the so you know, like again you
- 43:30Speaker 3: you've reached a lot of success early, So what is
- 43:33Speaker 3: the like the ultimate goal as far as a track
- 43:36Speaker 3: and field career, to go pro, to go pro? Okay,
- 43:40Speaker 3: and we sing like even at the because I think
- 43:42Speaker 3: there was a there was a pro race recently, a
- 43:45Speaker 3: pro meet recently. So they're so track and field is
- 43:48Speaker 3: actually starting to you know, just coming, it's starting to
- 43:52Speaker 3: come out of the Olympics. And we're starting to see
- 43:54Speaker 3: it more on those off years, and and the compensations
- 43:57Speaker 3: going up in a notoriety's going up as well.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Wanted to evolve. So did you actually enter candas that
- 44:03Speaker 4: the portal or was this something that you did on
- 44:05Speaker 4: your own as far as researching the schools that you
- 44:07Speaker 4: wanted to possibly transfer to.
- 44:10Speaker 10: I did it on my own.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, okay, any What's what's the goal?
- 44:18Speaker 3: What's the goal when when you when you leave? What's
- 44:21Speaker 3: your goal? Where are you? What? What do you see happening?
- 44:26Speaker 3: What do you think is going to ultimately be your
- 44:28Speaker 3: best race? What's the goal? If if it is the
- 44:32Speaker 3: actually the Olympics, what is that race that you would
- 44:35Speaker 3: be interested in running or would you want to run
- 44:38Speaker 3: them all?
- 44:40Speaker 10: I think I want to move up to the two
- 44:42Speaker 10: and the four.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Yeah that cord ain't no joke. Hard Well, you know,
- 44:52Speaker 3: it's funny because like I had when I was running track,
- 44:54Speaker 3: and like I said, I wasn't. I was not anywhere
- 44:57Speaker 3: remotely as talented as you, and my coaches kept telling me,
- 45:01Speaker 3: you need to run the four because you're not gonna
- 45:03Speaker 3: You're not gonna You're never gonna run win the hundred
- 45:06Speaker 3: You're never gonna win the two hundred, but you might
- 45:08Speaker 3: have a chance at the four. All I could think
- 45:11Speaker 3: of in the four was how I'm gonna feel coming
- 45:15Speaker 3: out of that car, you know the oxygen? Yeah, Like, man,
- 45:20Speaker 3: that's gonna that's gonna that's gonna kill me. Do you
- 45:24Speaker 3: think you how do you feel about the quarter?
- 45:27Speaker 4: Like?
- 45:27Speaker 9: What?
- 45:28Speaker 3: How was that in your mind? Like when you when
- 45:30Speaker 3: you're thinking about running something like that? Like what is like?
- 45:32Speaker 3: What do you?
- 45:33Speaker 8: Like?
- 45:33Speaker 3: Are you? Because my thing is I can't get past
- 45:36Speaker 3: how how bad I'm gonna feel when I when I
- 45:38Speaker 3: get done. I'm standing, I'm standing at the at the
- 45:42Speaker 3: takeoff and I'm like already like, man, when I get
- 45:44Speaker 3: on the other side, and I'm gonna be dead. There's
- 45:46Speaker 3: your block. Yeah that's my block. What what is it?
- 45:49Speaker 3: What is it mentally to you when you're running races
- 45:51Speaker 3: like that?
- 45:52Speaker 10: Well, the four hundred is not that bad. You just
- 45:55Speaker 10: gotta be in shame for it.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Okay, you're probably wrong. I probably just never got that.
- 46:04Speaker 10: And it's just really technical, really really really technical, and
- 46:10Speaker 10: if you don't got it down, you just don't got it.
- 46:13Speaker 3: See, And I don't think people people don't know that
- 46:17Speaker 3: to your point about it four hundred you're one hundred
- 46:19Speaker 3: percent right, and and I and I'm thinking, like, you know,
- 46:23Speaker 3: I don't know if we really work on you know,
- 46:26Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not shooting at coaches, but I don't
- 46:29Speaker 3: know if we are putting in the technicality of the
- 46:33Speaker 3: hundred yard dash, you know, because and again we're talking
- 46:37Speaker 3: about somebody who who is you might as well say
- 46:39Speaker 3: it is professionally ranked at it saying that, and yet
- 46:46Speaker 3: you got kids running the hundred, just getting in the
- 46:50Speaker 3: blocks and just going and just trying to run. And
- 46:53Speaker 3: I think that's the challenge is different. That's why saying
- 46:57Speaker 3: that earlier to Lisa, Like when you look at around
- 46:59Speaker 3: the name and you see in some of these times
- 47:01Speaker 3: with these athletes, and I'm talking about high school athletes
- 47:04Speaker 3: and you know, Texas and Florida and California, it is
- 47:07Speaker 3: amazing the times that we're seeing in the one to
- 47:10Speaker 3: two and the four in the relay races. So no,
- 47:13Speaker 3: go ahead, go ahead, no you god. I was just
- 47:15Speaker 3: gonna say, like, what is what is your what is
- 47:19Speaker 3: your goal for the hundred? Like what is what do
- 47:22Speaker 3: you think where do you think you could be in
- 47:25Speaker 3: the hundred yard dash, time wise, the right training, if
- 47:32Speaker 3: everything was right the way you wanted you you had
- 47:35Speaker 3: all the good training, you had a trainer even and
- 47:38Speaker 3: you're on the line ready to run where where where
- 47:41Speaker 3: do you think what would be a goal that you
- 47:43Speaker 3: would like to hit by the.
- 47:45Speaker 10: End of junior year? Probably eleven two.
- 47:48Speaker 3: So what I'm saying, hey, I appreciate that, you know.
- 47:56Speaker 3: That's why I asked because I wanted to hear if
- 47:59Speaker 3: there is an actual goal. And I'm sure that you
- 48:02Speaker 3: have a goal for each single one of the races
- 48:05Speaker 3: that you do. And I think, you know, when we
- 48:08Speaker 3: talked about like what is it that motivates people, I
- 48:11Speaker 3: think it is that dream. I think it is that
- 48:13Speaker 3: time that's that you put out there, that's the thing
- 48:16Speaker 3: that really makes you go. You know, So HOLLI, Yeah,
- 48:20Speaker 3: I was just going to say, like again, we thank
- 48:22Speaker 3: you for coming on and like, you know, again you
- 48:25Speaker 3: you've really done. You know, I'm an alumni, I'm a
- 48:28Speaker 3: support of West Virginia State University. You love the university,
- 48:31Speaker 3: and we're really proud of everything that you accomplished. And
- 48:34Speaker 3: you know, like I said, moving forward, you always be
- 48:36Speaker 3: a yellowjacket in our heart. But for real. We wish
- 48:39Speaker 3: you like nothing but the best of luck, and I
- 48:42Speaker 3: know you're going to do amazing and I can't wait
- 48:43Speaker 3: to watch you on another side. And hey, and make
- 48:45Speaker 3: sure Hollis has your has your phone numbers so that
- 48:48Speaker 3: we can we can reach out sometime once you get going.
- 48:51Speaker 3: We'll be back in touch with and have you back
- 48:53Speaker 3: on the show, even if we got to do it
- 48:55Speaker 3: by phone. Yes, absolutely, all right, Thank good luck to me.
- 48:59Speaker 3: When I when I think about when I listen to
- 49:01Speaker 3: her and I'm looking at her and her you know,
- 49:04Speaker 3: her mannerisms and all that, like she seems so like gentle,
- 49:11Speaker 3: but on the other side of it, it's like she's
- 49:13Speaker 3: so matter of fact about what it is that she
- 49:16Speaker 3: she wants. Now, you know, she may be she said
- 49:20Speaker 3: she named some schools, but she also made a statement
- 49:23Speaker 3: like it was going to be this, Like she feels
- 49:26Speaker 3: like it's going to be this particular school, which again
- 49:29Speaker 3: shows me like some certainty in her. And she's already
- 49:33Speaker 3: got her life in a way that she she can
- 49:36Speaker 3: see her life in a way she has a plan
- 49:38Speaker 3: for it exactly. And I think I think success falls
- 49:43Speaker 3: into that category of when you're so certain about where
- 49:47Speaker 3: and you know where you want to go, why you're
- 49:50Speaker 3: going there, what you want from it. I think, man,
- 49:53Speaker 3: I think that is like, I don't know if it
- 49:55Speaker 3: can get any better.
- 49:56Speaker 4: Than that, especially a young She's I'm so young, but
- 50:01Speaker 4: very mature for her age, you can tell that and
- 50:03Speaker 4: goal oriented. And that's what people that are successful in
- 50:08Speaker 4: life kind of set those goals early in life and
- 50:10Speaker 4: they don't waste a lot of time on figuring out
- 50:13Speaker 4: what they want. I'm not saying that all people do
- 50:15Speaker 4: that that are successful. You know, some people have to
- 50:17Speaker 4: take their time and kind of take the long way
- 50:19Speaker 4: home to figure out what they want to do with
- 50:21Speaker 4: their life. But it seems like the ones that at
- 50:23Speaker 4: a younger age figure out, this is what I want
- 50:26Speaker 4: and this is what I have to do to get it,
- 50:28Speaker 4: those are the people that make it.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Yeah. And there's nothing that anybody could say to her
- 50:35Speaker 3: to make her like think in her mind, you can't
- 50:38Speaker 3: achieve it. Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 50:40Speaker 4: Man.
- 50:40Speaker 3: Like I said, I think she's going places and I
- 50:43Speaker 3: can't wait to watch them. So what I wanted to
- 50:46Speaker 3: talk about a little bit while we have a little
- 50:47Speaker 3: bit of time is obviously the Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 50:50Speaker 3: So the Baseball Hall of Fame has opened their doors
- 50:54Speaker 3: potentially potentially back up to Pete Rose and shoeless Joe John,
- 51:00Speaker 3: which I don't understand that one, but just specifically talking
- 51:02Speaker 3: about Pete Rose and I just wanted to get you
- 51:04Speaker 3: guys thoughts on you know, is it too little, too late?
- 51:08Speaker 3: Is it sort of a slap in the face after
- 51:09Speaker 3: he's passed away? And will this lead to potentially Barry
- 51:13Speaker 3: Bonds getting in as well? What do you guys think?
- 51:15Speaker 3: I think let me let me answer the second question first.
- 51:19Speaker 3: That's an easy one. I think yes, it will. It
- 51:21Speaker 3: will ultimately impact it. I think it may impact I
- 51:23Speaker 3: think there was seventeen banded players. Ever, I think there's
- 51:28Speaker 3: going to be. I think it'll it'll change a lot
- 51:31Speaker 3: of those players. Okay, that's so I'm thinking that's opening
- 51:35Speaker 3: the door. Yeah, Okay. On that flip side of that, like,
- 51:45Speaker 3: I don't know, can you can you take this stigma
- 51:48Speaker 3: off me even if you put me in the home.
- 51:51Speaker 3: That's a good question. That's actually a really good question.
- 51:53Speaker 3: That's a good what do you think?
- 51:55Speaker 4: I mean? I mean, I don't know. I think that
- 51:58Speaker 4: when all of this went down back in what was
- 52:01Speaker 4: it nineteen eighty nine, I believe, and he was the
- 52:04Speaker 4: manager of the Reds when he was actually caught betting
- 52:08Speaker 4: on Major League Baseball. Not I don't think it was
- 52:10Speaker 4: actually on his own team, but he was, you know,
- 52:12Speaker 4: betting on At that time, betting was not looked at
- 52:16Speaker 4: today like it is. I mean people, it's kind of
- 52:19Speaker 4: arm in arm with sports. Yes, I mean he advertised games, yes,
- 52:25Speaker 4: So you know, I think if something this infraction would
- 52:27Speaker 4: have happened in today's day in time, I don't think
- 52:30Speaker 4: it would have been a lifetime ban. Also, there were
- 52:34Speaker 4: there was some information I looked up some things that
- 52:36Speaker 4: in twenty fifteen, he approached the commissioner I think his
- 52:40Speaker 4: name is Manfred that was the one that reversed the decision,
- 52:44Speaker 4: and he actually he applied to be reinstated, and they
- 52:49Speaker 4: interviewed him. They did some you know talking with him,
- 52:52Speaker 4: and they point blank asked him in twenty fifteen. He
- 52:55Speaker 4: lived in Las Vegas at that time, Pete Rose did,
- 52:59Speaker 4: and they asked him, point are you still betting on sports?
- 53:02Speaker 4: And his first reaction, his first answer was no, I
- 53:05Speaker 4: don't do that anymore. And then later he came back
- 53:08Speaker 4: and retracted that statement and said, yes, but I do
- 53:11Speaker 4: it legally on other sports, you know, not baseball, but
- 53:14Speaker 4: on other you know, different areas in sports. And so
- 53:18Speaker 4: when that when he came back and kind of retracted
- 53:21Speaker 4: that statement, saying he's still betting. That's when Manford come
- 53:24Speaker 4: back and said, you know, you're still a threat to
- 53:27Speaker 4: the game and we cannot reinstate you back to be
- 53:31Speaker 4: able to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. So
- 53:34Speaker 4: I don't know now now whether or not that made
- 53:36Speaker 4: a difference that he first said he keep quit gambling
- 53:39Speaker 4: and then later changed his mind. You know, maybe that
- 53:41Speaker 4: impacted their ideas about whether or not he should be
- 53:44Speaker 4: able to be inducted. But it probably didn't help that
- 53:48Speaker 4: he at first didn't tell the truth.
- 53:51Speaker 3: My thing is, even at the onset of it, I
- 53:53Speaker 3: don't care you didn't bet, as you didn't. At least
- 53:56Speaker 3: you didn't get caught betting as a player. We're talking
- 53:58Speaker 3: about the Hall of Fame as a player, not a manager,
- 54:01Speaker 3: right And Pete Rose, to me, embodies what a professional
- 54:06Speaker 3: athlete should be like. They go hard, they're passionate about
- 54:09Speaker 3: the game. I mean, he got the name Charlie Hustle
- 54:11Speaker 3: just because of the vigor in which he played the game.
- 54:14Speaker 3: So to me, he should have never been banned again.
- 54:17Speaker 3: The band could have been like, well, you can't work
- 54:19Speaker 3: in professional baseball anymore because you violated rules, and that's fair, fine,
- 54:23Speaker 3: that's right, right, yeah, And for what you did on
- 54:26Speaker 3: the field, you're the hit king. You played your rear
- 54:30Speaker 3: end off. You should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Same thing with Barry Bonds. And my problem with the
- 54:36Speaker 3: whole Bonds conversation is this, he played during the steroid era.
- 54:41Speaker 3: He's the best of the steroid era, right, so there's
- 54:46Speaker 3: allegations that he possibly did he never never confirmed. But
- 54:49Speaker 3: here's what we don't know. During the steroid era. We
- 54:53Speaker 3: can tell you who definitively got caught, we can tell
- 54:57Speaker 3: you who we had suspicions of, but we really can't
- 55:00Speaker 3: you who didn't use it, right, because there may have
- 55:02Speaker 3: been a player or to who we all hold up high,
- 55:06Speaker 3: who we say, who didn't you. They could have used
- 55:08Speaker 3: it to get over an injury, to get out of
- 55:10Speaker 3: a slump. There's a variety of ways which maybe you
- 55:13Speaker 3: use it for a short time to get over the
- 55:15Speaker 3: hump and then you just never touched it again. So Durman,
- 55:18Speaker 3: the steroid errors. I'm not saying that we assume everybody
- 55:21Speaker 3: did it, but we don't really know who didn't do it,
- 55:24Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. So to me, when we
- 55:26Speaker 3: talk about Bonds, when we talk about you know, Pete Rose,
- 55:30Speaker 3: there's no doubt they should be in the Hall of
- 55:32Speaker 3: Fame because they were the best players of their time,
- 55:34Speaker 3: were some of the best players. You you if you're
- 55:38Speaker 3: not going to put them in the hall, okay, you
- 55:43Speaker 3: they are your They are your history. You know, they
- 55:48Speaker 3: are your history. They are if you if you go
- 55:51Speaker 3: back in time and you start to think about who's
- 55:56Speaker 3: shape who's shaping the game, those two names are huge.
- 56:04Speaker 3: And the fact that you can you can actually act
- 56:10Speaker 3: act like they did not exist and or that people
- 56:14Speaker 3: do not love them, Yeah, that's that part. That's that
- 56:17Speaker 3: that part that part too, because if you're thinking that people,
- 56:21Speaker 3: there's some people who might be like, yeah, they don't need,
- 56:23Speaker 3: they don't deserve to get back in, you know, or what.
- 56:26Speaker 3: But I'm gonna make the case there's a ton of
- 56:29Speaker 3: fans of those two players would care what they don't
- 56:33Speaker 3: care what they've done. They saw what they actually did
- 56:37Speaker 3: on the field.
- 56:38Speaker 4: And this is This is my question, and you guys
- 56:40Speaker 4: may know the answer, because I surely don't. What what
- 56:43Speaker 4: what kind of got this conversation started about, you know,
- 56:47Speaker 4: the permanent bands on these players and allowing them to
- 56:50Speaker 4: expire after you know, they passed away. What what brought
- 56:54Speaker 4: that up? Because Pete Rose passed away like a year
- 56:56Speaker 4: and a half ago. Correct, it's been well maybe two
- 56:59Speaker 4: years a two years ago, and so I just wondered
- 57:03Speaker 4: what precipitated this whole conversation.
- 57:05Speaker 3: That's actually a good question, which I don't know the answer.
- 57:07Speaker 3: I don't know the answer, but I would also say,
- 57:10Speaker 3: you know, when it comes to you know, particularly the
- 57:13Speaker 3: base I would say any not any hall of fame,
- 57:15Speaker 3: but particularly baseball and football. But we're just talking about baseball.
- 57:19Speaker 3: And I know this is a point that you always
- 57:20Speaker 3: make about who are the people voting on you, Like
- 57:25Speaker 3: we gotta have a better process, Like I need to
- 57:28Speaker 3: know come out front and I need to know your vote.
- 57:32Speaker 3: I need to know your qualifications and more than anything,
- 57:35Speaker 3: I need to know like are you paying attention to
- 57:37Speaker 3: the sport? Are you still engaged in this thing to
- 57:40Speaker 3: give an accurate assessment? Because to your point, Lisa and Coazley.
- 57:44Speaker 3: People love Barry Bonds, people really love p row He
- 57:48Speaker 3: is he loved. Yeah, he's not like a liked figure.
- 57:51Speaker 3: He is a beloved figure. People really want to see him,
- 57:54Speaker 3: and all people have quit watching baseball because he's not
- 57:57Speaker 3: in the Hall of Fame. You come to West Virginia,
- 58:00Speaker 3: talk about you talk about Pete Rose. Yeah right, you
- 58:03Speaker 3: you you got you know, And so.
- 58:09Speaker 4: Go ahead say, I was in Cincinnati this last week
- 58:12Speaker 4: and at a Reds game, and the monument outside of
- 58:14Speaker 4: the stadium is still people. I guess the fans when
- 58:17Speaker 4: they come from different places, they lay the fresh roses
- 58:21Speaker 4: on his monument. I mean, so you can go any game,
- 58:24Speaker 4: like any time, and you'll see the fresh roses all
- 58:26Speaker 4: around his monument.
- 58:27Speaker 8: See.
- 58:27Speaker 3: And I hate the idea of giving somebody, you know,
- 58:31Speaker 3: like Baseball league, football League, basketball league, recognizing a player
- 58:39Speaker 3: you know that they that has had some issue and
- 58:43Speaker 3: you recognize you you punish him his entire off after
- 58:47Speaker 3: his career, you punish him, or during his career, you
- 58:49Speaker 3: punish him, and then you're going to try to celebrate
- 58:52Speaker 3: him when he passes. Yeah, I mean that's it that
- 58:55Speaker 3: you know he he is what he is or she
- 58:58Speaker 3: is what she is to your program now, and whatever
- 59:02Speaker 3: the other things that happened to them, whether they end
- 59:05Speaker 3: up becoming a drug addict, they end up doing this,
- 59:07Speaker 3: they end up doing that's that's over there. They still
- 59:12Speaker 3: make the mark on the leak and the fact that
- 59:16Speaker 3: you want to try to change that you can't. Yeah,
- 59:19Speaker 3: And the fact of the matter is, like, look, that
- 59:21Speaker 3: happened when he was a manager. He ain't got nothing
- 59:23Speaker 3: to do with that. No, no, exactly exactly. I hope
- 59:27Speaker 3: he gets in. Congratulations, Pete Rose, I'm calling him. All right,
- 59:32Speaker 3: ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get out of here, and
- 59:34Speaker 3: we appreciate your listening and we'll be back again soon.
