- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads, the
- 0:08shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and Neurolink.
- 0:13I'm your host. Will Walden, our inside source
- 0:17of SpaceX, said that engineers have resolved a technical
- 0:20problem with Starship's electrical system.
- 0:23This is detected during pre launch checks and this is at the
- 0:28Star Base facility. Now during routine diagnostics
- 0:30at the Star Base facility, the team identified a faulty
- 0:34component, possibly software, we're not 100% sure.
- 0:37They didn't disclose that information, but it required
- 0:40immediate attention. Now following a rapid response
- 0:43in a series of thorough testing, the system was deemed fully
- 0:47operational. Now the flight schedule remains
- 0:50on track without delays now, but there also was some other things
- 0:55that we have to talk about now with the electrical issue behind
- 0:58them, they're finalizing all the pre launch checks for Starship's
- 1:02upcoming flight test scheduled for November 19th of 2024.
- 1:07The vehicle and ground systems are in top condition.
- 1:10Weather forecast suggests favorable conditions with a
- 1:12launch window opening at 4:00 PM central time.
- 1:15Given the intense preparations, the teams are confident that
- 1:18Starship is ready for its next major test flight.
- 1:22Now, one of the critical area as a focus has been Starship's heat
- 1:26shield. A feature this designed to
- 1:28protect did during re entry. Engineers had made significant
- 1:32upgrades to the heat shield, incorporating new materials and
- 1:35design adjustments based on previous flight data.
- 1:39The upcoming test will not only evaluate these enhancements, but
- 1:42will also include several experimental components aimed at
- 1:45pushing the limits of this thermal barrier.
- 1:48Now, for this flight, SpaceX has intentionally removed specific
- 1:51sections of heat shield tiles to gather data on areas of higher
- 1:54thermal stress. This experiment will help
- 1:57redefine the design for future vehicles, especially as the
- 2:01company aims to develop new hardware capable of catching the
- 2:04Starship on its descent, eliminating the need for
- 2:07traditional splash downs in the ocean.
- 2:09Additionally, the spacecraft will fly at a little higher
- 2:12angle of attack during re entry, increasing the aerodynamic
- 2:16forces on its control flaps. The move is designed to assess
- 2:20the robustness of both the flap systems in the upgraded heat
- 2:23shield under more extreme conditions.
- 2:26Now, these heat shield experiments are a step in its
- 2:29Spacex's ongoing efforts to create this thing into a fully
- 2:33reusable spacecraft. And by testing the vehicle in
- 2:35such challenging conditions, the company hopes to gain valuable
- 2:39insights that will lead to improved performance and reduced
- 2:43refurbishment time between flights.
- 2:45They hope to get 100 flights per year the next year or two and
- 2:49hopefully up to 400 flights in two years.
- 2:52Now the team believes the results of these experiments
- 2:55will be instrumental in advancing Starship design and
- 2:58capabilities for all of those flights.
- 3:00Now another major pre launch achievement was successfully
- 3:03completed and the wet dress rehearsal.
- 3:07Now the test involved loading the full stack Starship and
- 3:09Super Heavy booster with propellant and running through a
- 3:12complete launch countdown, halting just before ignition.
- 3:15The purpose of the WDR, the wet dress rehearsal, is to simulate
- 3:18the conditions of an actual launch, ensuring that all
- 3:21systems are functioning correctly.
- 3:23It confirms that the vehicle and ground support systems are ready
- 3:26to handle the stresses of launch day.
- 3:29Now, this is the other issue I was talking about.
- 3:32There was a potential issue with the stack configuration of
- 3:34Starship and the Super Heavy booster emerged.
- 3:37After the wet dress rehearsal, engineers identified a
- 3:39mechanical alignment concern that could affect the connection
- 3:43between the two stages. While it doesn't appear to be a
- 3:46major set back, SpaceX has dispatched teams to address the
- 3:49issue swiftly. Early assessment suggests that
- 3:52minor adjustments will resolve the problem without causing any
- 3:54delays to the launch schedule. Meanwhile, preparations for the
- 3:58flight termination system review are in full swing.
- 4:01The FTSA crucial safety feature is designed to destroy the
- 4:04rocket, blow it up if it stays off its intended course during
- 4:09the launch. Now, SpaceX is performing final
- 4:11hardware checks and verifying communication links with range
- 4:14safety authorities. These checks are part of a
- 4:17broader range safety protocol that includes coordination with
- 4:20the FAA for certification. Now the review is a necessary
- 4:24step to ensure the launch can proceed safely.
- 4:27Now. Environmental assessments have
- 4:29also been completed, final reports reported to the FAA.
- 4:32The documentation includes acoustic impact analysis and
- 4:36debris risk evaluations and local environmental and
- 4:40monitoring stations around the launch that you've been
- 4:41calibrated, providing real time data to ensure that the launch
- 4:45adheres to safety and environmental guidelines.
- 4:48The review process is showing that SpaceX is committed to all
- 4:53the regulatory standards in the area.
- 4:55Now, in terms of weather, the outlook for the launch is
- 4:57positive. Spacex's meteorological team has
- 5:00been analyzing upper level wind patterns and atmospheric
- 5:03conditions to identify any potential issues.
- 5:06Data collection systems installed around Starbase are
- 5:09providing continuous updates allowing the team to make
- 5:12precise, real time decisions. The current forecast indicates a
- 5:16high probability of favorable weather.
- 5:18The final call will depend on the most up to date information
- 5:22on the day of launch. Now range safety preparations
- 5:25are also moving forward smoothly.
- 5:28Teams are coordinating with marine and air traffic
- 5:30authorities to secure the area around the launch site, ensuring
- 5:33that the range is clear. Recovery vessels are being
- 5:36positioned ahead of the launch to support post flight
- 5:38operations. The level of coordination is
- 5:41necessary for a mission of this scale where multiple factors
- 5:44must align perfectly for a successful launch.
- 5:48Now the Launch Readiness Review, or the LRR, is the final hurdle
- 5:52before the scheduled flight. Subsystem leads are compiling
- 5:55detailed reports on each component of the Starship,
- 5:59presenting the final status updates.
- 6:01Mission Control has been running for simulations of the entire
- 6:03countdown sequence, testing various scenarios to identify
- 6:07any potential issues before launch day.
- 6:09The review process is designed to catch any last minute
- 6:12problems and ensure that every part of the vehicle is ready.
- 6:15Now. This test flight is a pivotal
- 6:17moment for SpaceX as it aims to validate the recent upgrades and
- 6:21innovations incorporated in the ship and the booster.
- 6:25They want to fly these things fully reusable and it can
- 6:28significantly lower the cost of space travel.
- 6:31Now the development of Starship has been filled with testing,
- 6:35failing, adapting, and each flight test provides critical
- 6:40data. Then it forms the next
- 6:41iteration. Now, with just a day away before
- 6:46launch, the final checks are underway.
- 6:48Assuming everything goes smoothly, this test flight can
- 6:51mark another major step forward for Starship, bringing SpaceX
- 6:54closer to its vision of fully reusable spacecraft and more
- 6:58accessible space missions. And a Starship headed to the
- 7:02moon for the HLS missions. And also think about Mars
- 7:07Starship. That will be an incredible thing
- 7:11in the near future. Elon says he wants to start
- 7:14sending starships there in the next few years.
- 7:17So if this test is successful, it lays the groundwork for the
- 7:21next two 345 tests, catching a booster this time as well.
- 7:27Just like they did with IFT 5, they'll be flying the booster
- 7:30back to the launch site, catching it with Meccazilla and
- 7:33slowly lowering it down to be either discarded and studied, or
- 7:40maybe they'll refurbish it and send it.
- 7:43Probably not though. They have upgraded models.
