- 0:00Welcome back everyone to the Real Life Theology Podcast.
- 0:05We've got another great session for you guys
- 0:07from the 2020 National Gathering
- 0:10focused all on loving like Jesus.
- 0:14I hope you guys enjoy this episode.
- 0:17Good afternoon.
- 0:19How was lunch?
- 0:22Good, good.
- 0:23The title of my session is Loving Like Jesus.
- 0:28Simple enough, right?
- 0:32And then you realize that the first time
- 0:34that we're commanded to love is five books into,
- 0:40I'm sorry, five chapters into the Gospel of Matthew.
- 0:43And Jesus is not calling us to love our neighbor.
- 0:49No, he's commanding us to love our enemies.
- 0:53You have heard that it was said,
- 0:55love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
- 0:59But I tell you, love your enemies
- 1:00and pray for those who persecute you,
- 1:03that you may be children of your father in heaven.
- 1:06He causes his son to rise on the evil and the good
- 1:11and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
- 1:16If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?
- 1:20Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
- 1:22And if you greet only your own people,
- 1:26what are you doing more than others?
- 1:28Do not even pagans do that?
- 1:31Be perfect therefore as your heavenly father is perfect.
- 1:36Matthew 5, 43 through 48.
- 1:39You know, I think it's clear that Jesus is calling us
- 1:43to love here, right?
- 1:44And if we're gonna love like Jesus,
- 1:46that means we have to love our enemies.
- 1:47But if we're gonna love our enemies,
- 1:48I think it's important that we identify our enemies.
- 1:53So I ask you, who is your enemy?
- 1:55Now I know us Christian folks,
- 1:57ooh, down here in the South, we nice folks.
- 1:59We are nice people.
- 2:00We don't have any enemies.
- 2:02Or I know who our enemy is, Satan.
- 2:05That's our enemy.
- 2:07Other than that, but yet we realize that Jesus had enemies.
- 2:11And so let's talk about who is our enemy.
- 2:13Well, an enemy is someone who hates you,
- 2:16who is hostile towards you,
- 2:18who is actively opposing you, your decisions,
- 2:21your ideology, your worldview.
- 2:25We feel threatened by our enemies,
- 2:27like they're gonna harm us or hurt us,
- 2:29or our family, even our church.
- 2:32We tend to fear that their actions
- 2:35will negatively affect our lives,
- 2:40our lifestyle, our goals,
- 2:41the environment that we've created, right?
- 2:45No, we worry that our enemies will take something from us
- 2:50that is not theirs to take,
- 2:52or that they will create something
- 2:54that they have no right to create.
- 2:56So who is your enemy?
- 2:59Now, I don't know about you,
- 3:00but I think that usually we are influenced by our leaders
- 3:06and by the media as to who should be our enemy.
- 3:08And for me growing up, it was pretty simple.
- 3:11This was my enemy.
- 3:13That was our enemy, Osama Bin Laden,
- 3:17and every other Middle Eastern Muslim, right?
- 3:20And we know why, we had 9-11, we were in war, right?
- 3:26And so we understand why that was our enemy.
- 3:30And yet now it feels like the enemy is much closer to home.
- 3:36It's actually within our own country.
- 3:40And it seems to start with political figures
- 3:45and the people that support them.
- 3:47That's our enemies or their ideology,
- 3:51whether they are on the conservative right
- 3:53or the liberal left,
- 3:55whether they support pro-life or pro-choice,
- 3:58that's our enemy.
- 4:00Nah, I know who our enemy is, police officers.
- 4:06That's our enemy.
- 4:07They're out here killing black people.
- 4:09We need to defund the police.
- 4:13Who is our enemy?
- 4:15It's really Black Lives Matter.
- 4:17Now I'm gonna say that, I believe Black,
- 4:19all lives matter, of course Black Lives Matter,
- 4:21but that organization, you heard about them?
- 4:24I can't even say that
- 4:25because I don't want anybody to think
- 4:26I'm behind that organization.
- 4:28No, sir, no, I'm not doing that.
- 4:32It's white supremacists, that's our enemies.
- 4:36Antifa, don't get me started.
- 4:40No, I know, you know, if we talk about violence,
- 4:42I know who our enemy is, it's the NRA.
- 4:45Why?
- 4:46Guns are the problem.
- 4:47People are killing people with guns.
- 4:49So take the guns away and we'll be fine.
- 4:51Have you seen all these mass shootings?
- 4:54Just take the guns away.
- 4:55Might as well take them away from the cops too.
- 4:59That's our enemy.
- 5:00No, let's talk a little bit about culture.
- 5:05If we're in a cultural war,
- 5:06it's against the LGBTQ community.
- 5:10Have you seen how they have infiltrated our media,
- 5:11how they're trying to brainwash our children?
- 5:13Did you see what was on TV the other day?
- 5:16Two guys kissing on a major network, have you?
- 5:19Oh my goodness.
- 5:21That's our enemy.
- 5:26No, it's straight white men.
- 5:30That's our enemy.
- 5:32They've had all the power and the privilege
- 5:33for hundreds of years and look where our country is.
- 5:37Have they not figured it out by now?
- 5:40That's our enemy.
- 5:43It's those Mexican immigrants.
- 5:45Not all immigrants,
- 5:46just the Mexican ones that come from Mexico
- 5:48because they're the rapists and the drug dealers
- 5:50and the killers and those are the bad.
- 5:51No, it's ICE.
- 5:55Do you see how the border patrol,
- 5:56how inhumanely they treat people
- 5:59that are just trying to come
- 6:00and get an opportunity at a better life?
- 6:04That's our enemy.
- 6:08I don't know about you.
- 6:10I think maybe our enemies are the people
- 6:11who don't wear masks.
- 6:18Can you believe, I mean, how they are threatening my life,
- 6:21the life of my children?
- 6:23Selfishness.
- 6:26You know, I can't, the real enemy is the people
- 6:28who try to make us wear masks.
- 6:31You are, uh-uh, this is my right.
- 6:34If I want to get sick and die, I should be able to do that.
- 6:40No, it's the people who want to open up the economy
- 6:42or the people that think that our kids
- 6:44should be back in school, brick and mortar.
- 6:48It's people of a certain religion.
- 6:49It's people from that church down the street.
- 6:57What we have engaged in is something
- 7:01that's called ideological warfare.
- 7:03But we're not just battling against ideas.
- 7:10It's much more dangerous now.
- 7:12You see, we personify ideologies,
- 7:15and so we give ideas a face and a race.
- 7:19We give them a marital status and a socioeconomic class.
- 7:23We give them a voting preference,
- 7:25but we don't give them a soul.
- 7:30Then we group these people together
- 7:32and that's who we wage war against.
- 7:33And if not outwardly, we do so in our hearts.
- 7:38I recently shared this list when I was speaking
- 7:41to a group of high school students
- 7:43at a private, predominantly white Christian school
- 7:48in the suburbs of South Atlanta.
- 7:50Actually, it wasn't even the suburbs,
- 7:51it's more even the country.
- 7:54So I got a friend of mine that I helped become a Christian.
- 7:56I've been discipling him for about 15 years.
- 7:58He's one of the leaders in the church.
- 8:00I've been disciplining him for about 15 years.
- 8:00He's one of the leaders of the school.
- 8:02He said, come on in, Angel.
- 8:03Can you preach to our people?
- 8:05After all, it's Hispanic Heritage Month.
- 8:09And so I shared this list, it was about 300 kids,
- 8:12and I went through it.
- 8:14And do you know what happened
- 8:16when I said straight white men?
- 8:20The teenage white girls started clapping.
- 8:23Yeah, it was a little awkward.
- 8:28I laughed it off a little bit, said something smart,
- 8:31looked around and kept it rolling.
- 8:34But you know what was obvious to me at that moment?
- 8:36It was that to them,
- 8:37straight white men resonated as their enemy.
- 8:41Now, who is your enemy?
- 8:42Who do you feel most threatened by?
- 8:44Who did you clap about in your heart?
- 8:48That's who God is calling you to love.
- 8:51And it's that love that fuels disciple-making.
- 8:55You know, I have an opportunity, a dream of mine really,
- 8:59to serve as a character coach.
- 9:01It used to be called a chaplain
- 9:02for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
- 9:04And I work with a high school in the inner city of Atlanta.
- 9:08And I remember when I first walked in
- 9:11to the football locker room, it was like five years ago,
- 9:13and I go in there and I'm ready to give my devotional
- 9:16to the football players.
- 9:17And I looked to my left and I see a young lady
- 9:21dressed to play football, leaning on her pads,
- 9:26her football pads.
- 9:27And I'm like, what is she doing here?
- 9:30Is she trying to play football?
- 9:32I mean, she wasn't very strong or athletic.
- 9:34I mean, I was kind of upset by it.
- 9:37I love sports.
- 9:39I majored in sports management at Florida State University.
- 9:43It's always been a dream of mine to do sports ministry.
- 9:46And here I am about to embark on my dream
- 9:49and there's this girl threatening the sanctity
- 9:52of high school football.
- 9:54My flesh questions, why is she even out here?
- 10:02What is she trying to prove?
- 10:04Is she gay?
- 10:06But thank God for the Holy Spirit that in that moment,
- 10:10challenged me to love the person in that room
- 10:12that I felt most threatened by.
- 10:13And no, I didn't feel any, like I was in physical danger,
- 10:18but my ideology was, my convictions were.
- 10:21And so I went up to her and I asked her her name
- 10:23and I started building a friendship with her.
- 10:25And I decided I was gonna love like Jesus.
- 10:28And I found out about how she also wrestled
- 10:30and I come from a family of wrestlers.
- 10:32And so we connected on that.
- 10:34And then we started talking about her family life.
- 10:36And I learned about how she lives with her single mom
- 10:38who's being abused by her boyfriend
- 10:41and how they'd been in and out of homeless shelters.
- 10:45I said, okay.
- 10:46I decided I was gonna do everything I could
- 10:48to show her love because she obviously
- 10:51wasn't experiencing that when she wasn't at school.
- 10:54And so I looked for ways to encourage her
- 10:56and we celebrated her birthday before practice one day.
- 10:59And I asked the guys if they would share
- 11:01some encouraging words about her and I was blown away
- 11:04because they shared about how smart she was
- 11:06and how great of an attitude she had
- 11:08and how great of a teammate she was.
- 11:12And she came to church and she brought her friends
- 11:16and sometimes they would fall asleep
- 11:18in the back during my sermon.
- 11:24They had been at the club the night before
- 11:27but they were there and we started talking
- 11:30and we started talking about who she was
- 11:33and about her identity and whether or not
- 11:35she wanted to be married to a man one day
- 11:37and whether or not she wanted to have kids.
- 11:39And I introduced her to sisters that would love her
- 11:42and teach her about Jesus.
- 11:43And last year, Melina became a disciple
- 11:46and was baptized into Christ.
- 11:54Those are the sisters that helped her
- 11:55and that's her family, that's her mom.
- 11:58And there's actually more
- 12:00because you may have seen her brother.
- 12:03She just didn't bring her friends.
- 12:04She brought her mom and her brother, Gerald,
- 12:05who was 16 years old at the time
- 12:08but a self-proclaimed atheist since the age of 12.
- 12:13He didn't really wanna have anything to do with God
- 12:16but he liked basketball and we played basketball
- 12:19every Sunday in the gym after church.
- 12:21And so he brought his basketball and we started hooping.
- 12:25Now we weren't trying to have doctrinal disputes
- 12:28or ideological battles with him, no.
- 12:31I mean, we challenged him on his thinking some
- 12:33but we got to know why he was so turned off
- 12:37by the God of Christianity.
- 12:40And it turned out that it was the love of Christ
- 12:43that he experienced through us
- 12:46that opened his heart to the word of God.
- 12:49And soon after, Melina was able to baptize
- 12:52her brother, Gerald.
- 13:00So my question to us is this, what's our goal?
- 13:05Is our goal to win doctrinal disputes,
- 13:08win ideological battles, win elections
- 13:11or is our goal to win souls for Jesus?
- 13:16Now, if we're gonna love like Jesus,
- 13:17we gotta be willing to lose like Jesus.
- 13:21And by the way, why are we always trying to win?
- 13:25As Christians, don't we already have the victory?
- 13:30In order to win people,
- 13:32I believe we must lead with compassion.
- 13:36And I have to be honest as a person of color,
- 13:38I'm Puerto Rican, grew up Stateside in Florida.
- 13:43Sometimes it feels like the world is doing a better job
- 13:47when it comes to showing compassion than Christians.
- 13:50And that's why I'm grateful for Renew.
- 13:52I'm grateful to be part of this group
- 13:54and I've experienced humility and compassion here.
- 13:58But I wanna show you what it looks like
- 13:59when we stop trying to win
- 14:01and start leading with compassion.
- 14:03Now, if you're a college football fan,
- 14:04you may know who the person in this video is.
- 14:07David Shaw, the head coach at Stanford,
- 14:09who really, he and I had a great talk.
- 14:11I love listening to his wisdom and his thoughts.
- 14:14And he shared a quote to me
- 14:17and reminded me from Benjamin Franklin.
- 14:18He said, justice will be served, justice will not be served
- 14:23until those who are unaffected
- 14:25are as outraged as those who are.
- 14:28And I think that that's what I mean
- 14:30when I think the black community is hurting.
- 14:35If you've listened and the word empathy and compassion
- 14:39over these last four months,
- 14:40how do you listen to these stories and not feel pain
- 14:45and not wanna help?
- 14:48You know what I mean?
- 14:49It's like wearing a hoodie
- 14:54and putting your hands at 10 and two.
- 14:59Oh God, I better look out because I'm wearing Nike gear.
- 15:02Like what?
- 15:03What are we talking about?
- 15:05And so you can't relate to that if you're white,
- 15:08but you can listen and you can try to help
- 15:14because this is not okay.
- 15:18It's just not.
- 15:19It's not.
- 15:20And we just have, we gotta do better, man.
- 15:25We gotta like lock arm and arm and be together
- 15:30in a football locker room.
- 15:33That stuff is gone.
- 15:34Those barriers are gone.
- 15:40It just, we gotta do better.
- 15:42It's one of the things and why sports can be
- 15:45such a leader in this area.
- 15:46It's happened throughout history,
- 15:49dating back to Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson
- 15:52and Muhammad Ali and the number of changes
- 15:56that have been instituted and awareness brought to
- 15:59because of sport.
- 16:00Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected
- 16:06are as outraged as those who are.
- 16:11I saw a lot of people in the audience
- 16:13and I saw a lot of black men crying
- 16:17after George Floyd was killed on TV.
- 16:21This is the only white man I've seen crying on TV.
- 16:25Only one I've seen shed a tear.
- 16:28And this was a college football pregame show
- 16:31and Kirk Herfstreet, as far as I know,
- 16:33doesn't even claim to be a Christian,
- 16:37but that's compassion.
- 16:38His heart is broken by the pain others are feeling.
- 16:42He doesn't feel threatened.
- 16:43He just wants things to be better.
- 16:48What if we made a decision today to love our enemies
- 16:53by leading with compassion?
- 16:55How many more Malina and Gerald stories would there be?
- 16:59And let me just say this,
- 17:01leading with compassion doesn't mean
- 17:02we have to sacrifice our conviction.
- 17:05As disciples, it's not one or the other.
- 17:07Stop buying into that lie from Satan.
- 17:10You don't have to sacrifice one for the other.
- 17:12It's both.
- 17:13It's compassion and conviction.
- 17:14It's love and truth.
- 17:16It's social justice and moral order.
- 17:20You know, as I close,
- 17:20I want to challenge us with a very practical way
- 17:25to love our enemy this week.
- 17:28If your enemy is hungry, feed him.
- 17:32If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
- 17:35In doing this, you will heat burning coals on his head.
- 17:38Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
- 17:43Romans 12, 20, and 21.
- 17:47Maybe that's why it's been said
- 17:48that the closest way to a person's stomach
- 17:51through the closest way to a person's heart
- 17:55is through their stomach.
- 17:57Jesus fed his enemies.
- 18:00Now you feed them.
- 18:02You give them something to eat
- 18:04and along the way, get to know them.
- 18:07Seek understanding more than you.
- 18:10Seek to air your own opinions.
- 18:12There's enough opinions out there.
- 18:16Then, and maybe then,
- 18:20will we have a chance to not be overcome
- 18:23by all the evil around us,
- 18:24but instead to overcome evil with good.
- 18:31Let's pray.
- 18:37Father, we humble ourselves before you.
- 18:45We fall short of your love.
- 18:47It is such a high calling, God.
- 18:51Thank you for allowing us to see it in Jesus
- 18:56and getting a chance to imitate,
- 18:58but we fall short, Father.
- 19:00All of us do.
- 19:03God, and I ask for your forgiveness.
- 19:06God, I ask for your forgiveness
- 19:08because of that carnal nature
- 19:10that wants to be right all the time,
- 19:12that wants to win all the time.
- 19:13Father, help us to lose like Jesus
- 19:16and win souls along the way, God.
- 19:21Help us to be a light.
- 19:23Help us to give hope.
- 19:25Help us, God, to lead with compassion.
- 19:30And I feel like if we do that,
- 19:32that we're gonna give up our position of power
- 19:35or that we're gonna compromise our convictions.
- 19:38God, help us just to meet people where they are.
- 19:40Help us to trust in you
- 19:43and to just do it the way Jesus did it.
- 19:47Father, renew our hearts.
- 19:51Father, we're inundated with evil.
- 19:56The world is constantly discipling us into its own mold.
- 20:00Father, help us to put the armor on.
- 20:03Your armor, Father.
- 20:05We know that ultimately our battle
- 20:08is not against flesh and blood.
- 20:09It is against the demonic forces of the spiritual realm,
- 20:13but we know that those demonic forces
- 20:16are lived out in people.
- 20:19And Father, help us to really dig into our hearts
- 20:23as to who we feel threatened by,
- 20:27who we feel is our enemy,
- 20:30and help us to take a step out in faith
- 20:34to love that person,
- 20:37to love that people group
- 20:40so you can be glorified
- 20:43so that we can make disciples.
- 20:45In Jesus' name we pray.
