- 3:33So it's a very worried.
- 3:36I.
- 3:36I remember when I said that we had to have like.
- 3:38Like, if we had to, like, pull a lever and, like, take over, tonight might be the night.
- 3:45Wait a minute.
- 3:46You've been conspiring against me.
- 3:48It's good to have plan B's.
- 3:50Back up.
- 3:51Back up.
- 3:52Did I just.
- 3:53Where he has files on every Justice League member.
- 3:56Yes, exactly.
- 3:58I feel like I just learned.
- 3:59Exactly.
- 4:01I've just learned I'm your Captain Queeg and I don't know if I like that.
- 4:04And also, where are my fucking strawberries?
- 4:10Anyway, we are here to talk about.
- 4:13Really Sip.
- 4:14Everything's fine, everybody.
- 4:16Don't worry about it.
- 4:18This.
- 4:18This movie's got me feeling some feelings.
- 4:20It's got me in feeling kind of.
- 4:21Some kind of way.
- 4:23Also the profiles.
- 4:24Good luck.
- 4:25My video is weird, so good luck to you if you're watching this on Instagram or wherever your videos may be videoed.
- 4:31So we are talking about a classic from a renowned filmmaker.
- 4:37I feel like every podcast, eventually, if They're a movie podcast.
- 4:40They get around to talking about this filmmaker.
- 4:44It's Robert Altman.
- 4:45We're getting into the fancy 70s auteurs tonight and talking about Robert Altman, The Long Goodbye, 1973's homage satire.
- 5:04What else would you say about it?
- 5:06Noir.
- 5:08It's kind of become a touch point for modern noir, I guess.
- 5:15Starring Elliot Gould in that run where Elliott Gould was the sexiest, coolest person on the planet.
- 5:23The TV Guide cover with Grover.
- 5:26Yeah, it's right in that same time, right?
- 5:29Wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 5:31Have you not seen that?
- 5:32Yeah, it has to go.
- 5:34It has to go with the.
- 5:35The meme framing, which is.
- 5:37It's like, hey, editor's like, hey, you got me that.
- 5:40That cover of Elliot Gould.
- 5:41The photographer's like, yeah, real sexy, just like you asked.
- 5:45Absolutely perfect.
- 5:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:49Oh, yeah.
- 5:49Like where he's smiling, where he's mean, mugging.
- 5:52What?
- 5:52Like this guy, the only one.
- 5:53You're like, yeah, he's giving the smolder.
- 5:55Grover's like, I'm just happy to be here.
- 5:59Yeah, that.
- 6:01That air era Elliott Gould.
- 6:04Yeah, there we go.
- 6:04Look at that.
- 6:05The overalls.
- 6:06So look at that.
- 6:07Not.
- 6:07Oh, another area era of Elliott Gould, which a sky is.
- 6:11I kind of demanded.
- 6:12I mentioned demanded because this is a reason to bring in Ocean's Eleven.
- 6:16And as you all know, there was no way we're getting through this.
- 6:19I was just on the phone with them and I said, okay, I'm just going to remind everyone that Elliott Gould is also an Ocean's Eleven.
- 6:25Okay.
- 6:26This is true.
- 6:26And I'm a good sister.
- 6:28I did a little bit of research because I knew, as my sibling would request that we did talk about Elliot Gould and his gambling times.
- 6:37I guess it's a film that he made.
- 6:39I don't think it was the one after, but the one after.
- 6:42After this one where he played a gambling addict.
- 6:45A California split.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:48Yep.
- 6:49And it was very close to home because Elliott Gould also had a gambling problem in life, which brings it full circle with Ocean's Eleven.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:00Sounds like Robert Altman was a big party man, so I feel like if you were on his set, you didn't have a choice.
- 7:08Yeah, he was an interesting character.
- 7:11Well, it's interesting now that we're getting into the plot, but I would not be surprised if there wasn't some Altman in Roger Wade's character.
- 7:22As.
- 7:22Yes, I think it's very much if.
- 7:24If there was a director insert.
- 7:26I don't think it's exact insert, but Definitely.
- 7:28Like, this seems to be coming from a place of knowledge, experience.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:33Where you're like.
- 7:34I think I saw a clip of an interview that Robert Altman was like, yeah, I just drink so much.
- 7:39Because it's like.
- 7:39I think maybe he's not saying I drink so much.
- 7:43He says I have so many things to do, like, the next day, that I think it's kind of impossible to get it done.
- 7:50So I just don't go to sleep and, like, don't think about it.
- 7:54Yeah.
- 7:56The best coping habits, truly and for sure.
- 7:59Yeah.
- 7:59It's all the successful ones.
- 8:01Hemingway, which is also a nice chunk of Roger Wade, is very much later day.
- 8:06Hemingway, down to aesthetics.
- 8:09Yes.
- 8:09So the interesting thing I found out as I was doing a little bit of research here, the house that they're in, the way.
- 8:15It's Altman's.
- 8:16It's Altman's house.
- 8:18So were those people already there partying for that one scene?
- 8:21Yeah.
- 8:23Just roll the cameras.
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:26You know, it's interesting that, like, so when you're introducing this, Matt, and just like, noir.
- 8:32Neo noir.
- 8:33Right.
- 8:33I think there's, like, a couple different ways to look at this because you can read this as a complete destruction, deconstruction of, like, a film noir.
- 8:40But there's also a part of it that is.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:42But also, isn't this kind of just a straight noir from a 70s perspective?
- 8:47Which I think is interesting because we're talking about.
- 8:49So it started.
- 8:50The Long Goodbye is a Raymond Chandler novel starring Philip Marlo, who is a detective creator that he.
- 8:56A character that he created.
- 8:57And folks know him from, say, like, Humphrey Bogart.
- 9:00And I think Dick Beauregard played him several times.
- 9:04Yeah.
- 9:04So, yeah.
- 9:05Thank you.
- 9:06Yeah.
- 9:07And I think it's interesting because the character, in many ways, is the same.
- 9:10They've just put him in a different.
- 9:13What they call him.
- 9:13They.
- 9:14They like to call him Rip Van Marlo because they played it as if he went to sleep in, like, the late 40s, early 50s, and he woke up in 73, like, with the same suit and the same car
- 9:23and the same look at the world.
- 9:25Right.
- 9:26Yeah.
- 9:26This whole movie is him being like a fish out of water.
- 9:28Right.
- 9:29Like.
- 9:29Yeah.
- 9:30Nobody doesn't understand anybody.
- 9:32He wants to be understood.
- 9:33He wants human.
- 9:34He wants that connection.
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:35But, like, I think a perfect example of that is which were his neighbors, where he's asking, hey, have you seen my cat?
- 9:44And she's like, do you need a hat?
- 9:46And he's like, no, you're not fat.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:50Yeah.
- 9:51I think that, like, when this was first released, it had, like, mixed reviews and stuff, and a lot of people thought it was kind of making fun of.
- 10:01Of Philip Marlo and.
- 10:03And film noir, which is not how I see it.
- 10:05But then again, I.
- 10:06I'm.
- 10:06I didn't come from it as, like, I know film noir, but I.
- 10:09I didn't come from it as, like, a big Philip Marlo fan.
- 10:10Just I know the character, right.
- 10:12And I think it's very interesting because I feel like this.
- 10:14Feels like it very much is that character as I've seen it.
- 10:17The.
- 10:17And in fact, instead of the narration that you usually get in Philip Marlo, it's.
- 10:21It's just Marlo talking to himself, which is hilarious.
- 10:24But also I think, yeah, like, what if that.
- 10:26What would your narration actually be in real life?
- 10:28You mumbling to yourself.
- 10:30Yeah, right.
- 10:32And I do think it is.
- 10:34I.
- 10:34I think because it is crashing these two worldviews that I could see, someone sees.
- 10:41Well, it's not traditional film noir because he doesn't have a clarity of a vision like the way a film noir detective usually does.
- 10:49Like, they usually, like, they know what's going on.
- 10:51They know what's going on.
- 10:52There's good and there's bad.
- 10:54There's some sort of resolution where it's brought up against this, like, 1973 world of.
- 10:59This kind of, like, weird narcissism.
- 11:02And as we'll talk about, he has this thing, which apparently Elliot Gould just improvised.
- 11:07When he says, it's okay with me.
- 11:09Yeah, it's okay with me.
- 11:10And that.
- 11:11It's almost like Marlo trying to convince himself it's okay until it's not.
- 11:15Until the end, when it's not.
- 11:17It's almost like trying to take on the ethos of an era that he's not from, because a lot of folks are just kind of rolling through.
- 11:22Like, we see all these different variations of, no, this is fine.
- 11:25It doesn't matter, so why not?
- 11:27And you realize that Marlo isn't.
- 11:29And I think that's why the Corvus character is the same, because in the end, he can't.
- 11:33He can't just go like, well, nobody cares anymore, or, well, you know, he couldn't anymore.
- 11:39And I think that's one of the main ideas in this movie, right?
- 11:45Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:46He's totally a man out of time and just trying to figure out where his space is.
- 11:51And also, it's.
- 11:54I saw someone, as I was going through, too, just describing him as just a schlub.
- 11:58Like, you think of your Philip Marlowe I mean, at a certain point he was like the super suave, cool.
- 12:06Yeah, Almost like a proto James Bond kind of character.
- 12:10Like very cool.
- 12:11You know, girls want him, men want to be him, like that kind of thing.
- 12:16And this Marlowe is very much.
- 12:18Not that this movie beats the shit out of him.
- 12:21Like for most of the film he's just buffeted by this way, that way.
- 12:26Just trying to navigate, like he's lost, like his cat.
- 12:30I was gonna say, from the moment.
- 12:32You see him, he's like a cat's bullying him.
- 12:35He's been defeated by his cat.
- 12:37You know, like curry brand cat food is just ruining his Life.
- 12:41Hey, it's 3:00 the morning.
- 12:43Go get me the kind of food I want.
- 12:45Got completely roasted by the gentleman stocking shelves.
- 12:50Like, oh yeah, buddy, I don't care about your cat.
- 12:53Like, it's all the same.
- 12:54Which anyone who's ever owned or had to watch after a cat knows they are very finicky.
- 13:00You cannot just pick up any can of.
- 13:02They know their brands.
- 13:05The moment he tries to start to improvise with the cottage cheese and egg,.
- 13:09I was like, dude, buddy, no, this.
- 13:11Is not going to end the way you think it's going to end.
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:15He goes and buys it and stuffs it in the empty can.
- 13:20Yeah.
- 13:23And he walks back out because he closed the door.
- 13:25He's like, oh, I'm sorry, don't worry, I just gotta get a cigarette.
- 13:28Then I'm feeding you.
- 13:29As if he wasn't just like, hey, not even with a spoon, just his bare hands from one can into another.
- 13:36Because the only other utensil I think he has is a pie turner, improbably so he's trying to do it with the pie turner and then just gives up and just starts stuffing it in the can bare handed, puts
- 13:50the top on it and goes through the pantomime of opening the can in front of the cat.
- 13:57Amazing.
- 13:58So it's fascinating to me.
- 13:59It's like, so what a.
- 14:00What an interesting way to start a film.
- 14:01What an interesting way to start a film.
- 14:03And yet we've already established that this Marlow is, well, perhaps seen from this lens, a loser.
- 14:09But also it's going to sound about like loyal.
- 14:12Like he's trying to impress like this cat who is his friend.
- 14:16As much as a cat can be.
- 14:18Right.
- 14:19And I think that does establish a.
- 14:21And then the cat just goes.
- 14:22And maybe it is a portent for the next creature who wanders into his apartment, who we would also classify as a friend.
- 14:31Yeah, yeah.
- 14:33Terry.
- 14:33Terry Lennox.
- 14:35Lennox comes wandering into his apartment and asks a favor.
- 14:39Well, we see Terry, like, trying to get in right to the gate because he lives in a gated area, gated community, and he has, like, scratches on his face.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50I was going to mention what's very interesting in the beginning of the film.
- 14:53You don't know what you're seeing, but what we are seeing is Eteri with scratches on his face, plus bruised and bloodied hands that he puts driving gloves on before he goes to Marlo's.
- 15:04But we don't know even why we'd hold that in our head.
- 15:07It's only by the end.
- 15:08And then you rewatch it, you're like, oh, shit, the movie's telling us from the beginning.
- 15:13But, like, Marlo don't know, and we don't know enough to know.
- 15:17You know?
- 15:19And by the same virtue, even if Marlo noticed, I don't think he would want to, because that's his friend.
- 15:24Yeah.
- 15:25You know, that's the thing he just sees.
- 15:26And as a friend, like, okay, so your friend comes and says, hey, it's like three o' clock in the morning.
- 15:30Drive me to Tijuana.
- 15:32And Marlo just does it.
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:35Like, he doesn't.
- 15:36He's.
- 15:36He.
- 15:36In his head, this is what friends do.
- 15:38Like, hey, don't.
- 15:39Don't worry.
- 15:40Obviously, you're in a bind.
- 15:42Yeah.
- 15:42And he also is interesting because you think Detective is very, like, inquisitive, but he says, oh, you and the wife are fighting again.
- 15:50Like, I don't want to hear about it.
- 15:52Right.
- 15:52Terry goes, yeah.
- 15:53Oh, you want to know more?
- 15:54And he's like, no, no.
- 15:55Yeah.
- 15:56What's super interesting is.
- 15:58And I didn't actually know this game was called this until I was reading up stuff.
- 16:01So that game they played with the.
- 16:03The dollar bills.
- 16:04Yeah.
- 16:04That's Liars Poker.
- 16:06The first thing we see them engage with is called Liars Poker.
- 16:09Again, the movie's kind of telling us.
- 16:11But, like, Marlo don't.
- 16:13Would not be ready to hear this part of the movie is him getting to that point.
- 16:16And we don't know to be on our guard around Terry, besides the fact that he does kind of come across as a douche.
- 16:21But, like, you know, people have douches that are friends.
- 16:24Yeah.
- 16:25It doesn't mean that they're a criminal or that just means, you know, he's kind of a careless dude who married rich.
- 16:32Yeah.
- 16:32You know, which is what is kind of how he's presented.
- 16:35Right.
- 16:36For sure.
- 16:37One of the things I want to call out here too, is the actor that portrays Terry not really an actor.
- 16:44And that's kind of a through line through this movie.
- 16:46That's Jim Bouton.
- 16:48He was a former professional baseball player turned author.
- 16:54He wrote two books that were kind of like, I guess, of sorts of like the Baseball Clubhouse.
- 17:00He was kind of like the man's man.
- 17:03So his whole series of books is just like the shenanigans the boys get up to in the clubhouse kind of stuff.
- 17:09Like hot footing each other and all that other kind of stuff.
- 17:12But he's got kind of that charisma.
- 17:15He's giving jock.
- 17:17He's giving you drawn up, like jock.
- 17:19Like, is it the jawline, the haircut?
- 17:22Yeah, yeah.
- 17:23Ne' er do well jock.
- 17:24Right.
- 17:25That is the entire vibe.
- 17:27But it's just an interesting thing because we have that in a couple different situations too.
- 17:31Once we get to our friend Marty a bit later, it's the same kind of thing.
- 17:35So it's an interesting thing.
- 17:36And it's something that Altman tends to do just as a rule.
- 17:40It's not always professional actors, which is just an interesting call out on the side.
- 17:45Just because it's that weird naturalism that he tries to pull into.
- 17:48Yeah.
- 17:48He cast someone that you would see as like someone who's kind of slid through life on looks and a particular talent.
- 17:55You know, probably reaching that point where, like, I gotta start making.
- 17:59I gotta figure out what's my next sounds like grift.
- 18:02Yeah.
- 18:02And he comes across like that and then we know more.
- 18:06Yeah.
- 18:06Yeah.
- 18:06Terry 100 that.
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:09And then things start to go south for Marlowe.
- 18:12A little bit like Marlow when he gets back from Tijuana.
- 18:15The dawn is rising.
- 18:16And instantly two detectives in his face.
- 18:19Yep.
- 18:20Trying to figure out his.
- 18:22His whereabouts last night and.
- 18:25And what happened with Terry, because apparently the news traveled faster than Marlo back to LA that bad things have happened and Terry's wife is no longer Terry's wife.
- 18:38Terry's wife is now dead.
- 18:40Terry is also dead.
- 18:41And Terry, he doesn't know this yet.
- 18:43Like, at first they're saying, like, we're trying to find Terry.
- 18:46And Marlo, being a loyal friend, is stonewalling them.
- 18:50I mean, that's why he ends up in the paper, is he ends up going to jail for three days because he won't.
- 18:55He won't say anything.
- 18:56Like he won't tell them what he.
- 18:58Where he went with Terry.
- 18:59Yeah, he doesn't.
- 19:00Kind of funny.
- 19:01I wish I had subtitles when I watched this part because.
- 19:06Because Altman likes doing superimposing dialogue.
- 19:11Yeah.
- 19:12It's a lot of overlapping dialogue.
- 19:14Right.
- 19:15Where we're seeing, like.
- 19:16Yeah.
- 19:16Kind of.
- 19:16Lots of reflections.
- 19:18Yeah.
- 19:18Yes.
- 19:19But I will say this is a time where he does seem, like, more competent because he is giving them the run around and he's.
- 19:25He knows.
- 19:25Calling out their stupid bit.
- 19:27Right?
- 19:27Yeah.
- 19:28Oh, this is when you say it's not, you know, and.
- 19:30Yeah.
- 19:30And when they take downtown, like, he knows exactly.
- 19:33He's putting ink everywhere.
- 19:34He's talking to the detectives that are on the other side of the glass.
- 19:38Through the one way.
- 19:40For them, it is only when they show him the photo of Sylvia Lennox and, like, what had happened to her, where he paused because he said, okay.
- 19:52He.
- 19:53Like, this is serious.
- 19:54Like.
- 19:54Like, she wasn't just shot.
- 19:56She was beaten to death.
- 19:58Right.
- 19:58And that's, I think, part of the reason why he's like, well, my friend Terry could never have.
- 20:02He was my friend.
- 20:03I do not believe this is.
- 20:05He's capable of this.
- 20:06So he kind of like, is.
- 20:08You know, he's not going to help the police.
- 20:09They're telling him, oh, no, we know.
- 20:11And then he's in jail for three days, funnily enough.
- 20:14So part of that weird.
- 20:15We hear every conversation.
- 20:17His.
- 20:18His bunk mate in that.
- 20:19That's David Carrity.
- 20:20Yeah.
- 20:21The one who's just up there talking about, like, yeah, soon it's just gonna be like, they used to bring in for murder.
- 20:25Now it's just for smoking pot.
- 20:27Amazing.
- 20:28Like, there's no need for all that stuff.
- 20:29I know a lot of that's improv.
- 20:30But they just got him up there on the upper bunk just talking.
- 20:33And the cops, like, you think your lips are gonna fall off.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:38Right.
- 20:38But then I love that.
- 20:39Like, so Marlo's like, why.
- 20:40Why are you, like, setting me.
- 20:41I haven't said anything.
- 20:43And they're like, well, it's not a problem anymore because the Mexican authorities told him that they found Terry's body.
- 20:50He committed suicide, and he wrote a confession.
- 20:53So it's all buttoned up.
- 20:56He doesn't have to know anything.
- 20:58Yeah.
- 20:59Yeah.
- 20:59So Marlo's like, okay, I guess.
- 21:02Well, he doesn't believe Terry did it, but he's like, what else?
- 21:06They don't have any use for him.
- 21:08So now he's got to go back.
- 21:09And where.
- 21:09This is why he can just.
- 21:10Second mystery starts.
- 21:12Yes, though has cannot.
- 21:13You know, because he's a.
- 21:14He's a pp.
- 21:15He's a PI so which I love our classic thing where he goes to the bar where he gets messages.
- 21:20That's why.
- 21:21Yeah.
- 21:21He goes to the bar where they get messages, and that's where he learns that of this new job.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:27By the way, I want to call out a couple things in the bar.
- 21:29Number one, the score for this movie is incredible.
- 21:33It's John Williams and it's awesome.
- 21:36Yeah.
- 21:37Awesome.
- 21:37A thousand different ways.
- 21:39Thousand different ways.
- 21:40Yeah.
- 21:41I love this.
- 21:41Is a guy learning it in the bar because the owner thinks it's going to help bring more people in to have some dude on the piano singing songs in a bar.
- 21:49And it's a dingy bar.
- 21:51It's not like it's.
- 21:51It's not.
- 21:52It is a bar where people go drink and not look at each other.
- 21:56Yeah.
- 21:56No, it's a place to get drunk in the daytime, if that gives you an indication of what kind of bar this is like.
- 22:03And it's hilarious because the owner.
- 22:05Super, does not want that.
- 22:06So he's always introducing new stuff, like the piano player and the matches.
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:10Like, yeah, you're gonna go to this bar and eat.
- 22:12Yeah.
- 22:12Which perfect Marlo reaction.
- 22:15Do you see what else I got?
- 22:16Sandwiches.
- 22:17Huh?
- 22:17Never.
- 22:17Never heard of them.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:20And he finds it.
- 22:20So it was a call from a.
- 22:24A writer's wife.
- 22:25So we have a writer, alcoholic writer, as we found out, Roger Wade, who sounds like he's had his best years are behind him.
- 22:30Right.
- 22:30And he has a wife, Eileen, and she's the one who called Marlo because she needs help finding her husband.
- 22:36He's disappeared.
- 22:37Yeah.
- 22:37And this is kind of the kind of work that Marlo does.
- 22:40Like, he goes, oh, yeah.
- 22:40So like, divorce type cases.
- 22:42You know, marital stuff, so might as well pick up a job.
- 22:46He says he can fit it in.
- 22:47We know he has no other jobs.
- 22:50I appreciate the whole.
- 22:51I'll.
- 22:52I'll fit it in.
- 22:54He's got to seem like he's got multiple cases.
- 22:56Yeah.
- 22:57He wasn't just in jail for three days.
- 22:59Don't worry.
- 22:59Even though it's in the news.
- 23:01Yeah.
- 23:02He was out of town.
- 23:04He was out of town.
- 23:05Out of town.
- 23:06Yeah.
- 23:07Yeah.
- 23:07Right on the front page.
- 23:09Right on the front page section.
- 23:10At least the mug shot was hilarious because it was just the strip of photos, like the bowling alley.
- 23:15Yeah.
- 23:15He was, like, pulling faces on some of it.
- 23:18He was taking it very seriously.
- 23:20Yes.
- 23:21It's great.
- 23:21Great.
- 23:22So, yeah, he goes out to visit Mrs.
- 23:24Wade in a gated community that looks somewhat familiar because we were Colony.
- 23:31Malibu Colony.
- 23:32And doesn't he just let himself in?
- 23:34And then our Lovable Doberman just is like, yep.
- 23:38Holy crap.
- 23:39Well, she says, come in, Right?
- 23:41She says, come in.
- 23:42So it's not like he broke it, but, like, instantly this Doberman comes running down the steps like he's up against the wall.
- 23:49Yeah.
- 23:50That dog does not like him.
- 23:51And it doesn't get better.
- 23:53Not in the least.
- 23:54And what we learn over the course of the movie is that dog doesn't like anybody except for maybe Eileen.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 24:00Yeah.
- 24:01Eileen.
- 24:01Great dog acting.
- 24:02Great dog acting.
- 24:04Yeah.
- 24:05Fantastic.
- 24:08So Eileen kind of.
- 24:09Go ahead.
- 24:10Go ahead.
- 24:10Oh, no.
- 24:10You got it.
- 24:11Okay.
- 24:12So Eileen kind of gives him the rundown of where her husband may or may not be, has an idea that he might be somewhere with this quack doctor, and sends him to find him at this private hospital.
- 24:29Right.
- 24:30Yeah.
- 24:30It's under Dr.
- 24:31V.
- 24:32And he's able to kind of figure out, like, what that could possibly be, which is like, some sort of rehab clinic.
- 24:37Yeah, it's a rehab of sorts.
- 24:41And this is where you start to watch this movie and go, oh, no.
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:45This definitely influenced a bunch of movies that we liked 20 years later, like Fletch and the Big Lebowski, because as Marlow's just.
- 24:56He does Fletch his way into it.
- 24:58He completely fletches his way onto the campus of this.
- 25:01This hospital because he goes and asks directly the.
- 25:04The orderlies for.
- 25:06For Mr.
- 25:06Wade and for Dr.
- 25:07B, and they're not here.
- 25:09So then he's just wandering around the courtyard.
- 25:11Yeah.
- 25:11Just wander out telling people he's got to deliver this book.
- 25:14Right.
- 25:15Yeah.
- 25:16One of my favorite parts is we have Henry Gibson at that time known as More Comedy.
- 25:22I think it was.
- 25:22It was through Altman that he had some of his serious roles, like in Nashville here as, like, you know, saying he's not this Dr.
- 25:29Varinger until, like, as they're walking through the courtyard, you know, Marlo's like, are like, are you Dr.
- 25:35Vanger?
- 25:36At the exact same time, a couple people like, hey, Dr.
- 25:38Varing.
- 25:42Completely gives way to the.
- 25:43Oh, this is where Fletch got this from.
- 25:44Because it was that exact same beat.
- 25:47Yeah.
- 25:49But, yeah, it's a really good setup.
- 25:50You're like, okay, so something's weird about this place.
- 25:52And I don't think we ever get a full answer, but we know that it definitely is weird.
- 25:58There's something strange going on at this, like, rehab.
- 26:02Yeah.
- 26:02But we don't need to know the full story.
- 26:04It's just weird.
- 26:04Like, why wouldn't.
- 26:05You know?
- 26:06It could be just be like, Wade doesn't Want people to know that he's there.
- 26:10But why all this weird line like saying that I'm not the doctor?
- 26:14Because he is the doctor.
- 26:15And as we find out, yes, Wade is actually there because, you know, Marlo comes back in the evening, he.
- 26:22Now he knows the place.
- 26:23Yeah.
- 26:23Yeah.
- 26:24Because he's got the lay of the land after trying to deliver the book.
- 26:27So Marlowe just shows up at his.
- 26:29At the window.
- 26:30Window.
- 26:32What?
- 26:33While the doctor is trying to counsel Wade.
- 26:35Oh, that's so.
- 26:36Oh, no.
- 26:36The doctor down the money, Right?
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:39Right.
- 26:39The only thing we ever hear him talk about.
- 26:42Yeah.
- 26:42Because we don't know if whatever services have been, like, given.
- 26:46We don't know.
- 26:46Because the only time anything we hear out of Varinger is, you owe me money.
- 26:51I want my money.
- 26:51Give me my money.
- 26:53And he does seem to have a certain pull over Wade.
- 26:57Like, there's.
- 26:58Because, like, at first, like, Wade could have just left the room.
- 27:02Like, he's a big dude, right?
- 27:03But Wade seems to be controlling him in some way that only when Marlo shows up at the window and says, I'm taking him home, that he seems to go, oh, I can go.
- 27:12Which is very interesting.
- 27:13And we don't need to know the full answer.
- 27:15We don't need to know the full answer.
- 27:16But there's something.
- 27:17A power dynamic there, right?
- 27:19It's a very Svengali hold.
- 27:21It's a very, like, Brian Wilson and Dr.
- 27:23Landy kind of vibe to it.
- 27:26Yeah.
- 27:26Yeah.
- 27:26Which is very much of that time.
- 27:28It's.
- 27:28It's that time in.
- 27:29In LA where you have kind of these.
- 27:31Health guru.
- 27:32Health guru.
- 27:33Kind of, like, weird.
- 27:35Yeah.
- 27:36Helping people with money.
- 27:38Yeah.
- 27:38Yes.
- 27:38Yeah.
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:40You have lots of money.
- 27:41All of my clients have lots of money.
- 27:43And then I probably.
- 27:44But I'm sure it's performed, but.
- 27:47Right, then he knows your secrets.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:52Oh, yeah.
- 27:52I think that's it.
- 27:53I think the movie doesn't have to go too deep into it because we get the gist of it.
- 27:55There's a.
- 27:56There's a power dynamic going on.
- 27:58We already know that Wade is alcoholic.
- 28:01We're already getting the sense that he's kind of violent at times and that he's just at a point where he feels like he can't write anymore.
- 28:09And that's.
- 28:09That's a dangerous place to be for a writer and a very vulnerable place, too, in both sense, you know?
- 28:16But.
- 28:16Yeah.
- 28:16So then Marlo brings him back and.
- 28:19Oh, God, does Wade just like you?
- 28:21Can you get a feeling of what he's like?
- 28:22Because he's just loud and obnoxious.
- 28:24It's at night, he's, like, yelling, borish.
- 28:28Yeah.
- 28:29Bore.
- 28:29Yes, Boris, Yes.
- 28:33Yeah.
- 28:34Because.
- 28:34Is that when they have the conversation between him and, like, Eileen and Roger, is that when they kind of have.
- 28:42No, because I think he.
- 28:43I think that's a player.
- 28:44Roger.
- 28:44Just, like, he's going to pass out at that point.
- 28:47But then I think Marlo and Eileen talk a little because Marlo at that point, like, notices that she has a bruise.
- 28:54And, like, that's where Marlo is picking up that, like, Wade is probably violent when he's drunk, you know?
- 29:01And I think he's starting to feel protective over Eileen, which is a kind of a classic femme fatale detective thing, though.
- 29:08We can have a discussion about, like, what Eileen's choices are in this, because she is in a shitty situation.
- 29:14But I also don't know.
- 29:17She can't leave because it sounds like she has a.
- 29:19It's interesting because the movie doesn't fully, like, what's her deal?
- 29:23What.
- 29:23What.
- 29:24What's.
- 29:24What's exactly her deal?
- 29:25We get a little of it, but there's some choices I don't understand, but I don't know if we're supposed to.
- 29:30Right.
- 29:30They don't.
- 29:31They don't really give you that much.
- 29:33It's just these little passing conversations that she and Marlo.
- 29:36Yeah.
- 29:37We figure out, I mean, Esther, that she is manipulating Marlo because.
- 29:41Yeah.
- 29:41There is stuff that we don't know right now that she knows and she's not telling him.
- 29:45But beyond that, I don't.
- 29:46I don't know yet.
- 29:47I, I.
- 29:47I don't know beyond a woman who wants out of a situation.
- 29:50Yeah.
- 29:51This is where Wade, like, Roger.
- 29:53I think this is where her and Roger, like, have a conversation before he goes to pass out.
- 29:57Like, they speak softly while Marlo's outside side, I think.
- 30:00And she's like, it's one of the.
- 30:02It happens at some point where we get this conversation between them.
- 30:06Yes.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:06Where she's kind of saying, hey, like, we're not in love anymore.
- 30:11The two of them are having this conversation.
- 30:13Right?
- 30:14Yeah.
- 30:15He's like, well, she's saying, like, can you leave me?
- 30:17They're both kind of saying, can you just leave me to one another.
- 30:21Yeah.
- 30:23And what's interesting there, right.
- 30:24Is we can literally see Marlon reflection.
- 30:26He's outside.
- 30:26He's not the audience for this.
- 30:28Like, if we're trying to figure out who's manipulating who and telling the story, I think this is the movie's way of Telling us that this is a true conversation between these two people.
- 30:35Because she doesn't have.
- 30:36She's not performing for Marlo.
- 30:37She's literally like.
- 30:38And.
- 30:39And so you can see in that moment that, like.
- 30:41Okay, then this isn't just.
- 30:42She's not someone who, like, is, like, messing with Wade or, you know, trying to get, like, there's maybe had been at some point, feelings.
- 30:48I'm not sure, but, like, there's almost like we have to free each other, but they can't.
- 30:54Right.
- 30:54You know, which is very.
- 30:55Yeah.
- 30:55So I think that's very interesting, though.
- 30:57Yeah.
- 30:57I'm glad that bring up that conversation.
- 30:58Besides the way it's shot, which is really cool, I was gonna say.
- 31:01Yeah.
- 31:02It's also the best shot pieces of this movie.
- 31:04I mean, it's all gorgeous.
- 31:06Like, don't get me wrong.
- 31:07Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 31:08But the way he kind of gets framed in the back while the two of them are having this, like, really State of the Union real conversation about this.
- 31:17And then he's just off in.
- 31:19In the background through a window, trying.
- 31:21Not to get touched by the waves.
- 31:23Yeah.
- 31:23Beach combing and trying not to get wet.
- 31:25Yeah.
- 31:25Which is such a.
- 31:26Such a great metaphor for the entire movie, if we're really honest with each other.
- 31:30Yeah.
- 31:30Yeah.
- 31:31It's kind of.
- 31:32It's interesting, too, that we see waves imposed over Roger.
- 31:35Yes.
- 31:36Yeah.
- 31:36Because, like, that will be.
- 31:38Yeah.
- 31:39That's maybe slightly foreshadowing.
- 31:41Yeah.
- 31:42But, yeah, I think that's an incredibly important scene because we know it's not for anyone but those two people.
- 31:47So it's probably the most truthful we're getting from either of them.
- 31:50And we realize, oh, they're just, like, tied in weird knots.
- 31:55And, yeah, bad decisions are probably being made.
- 31:59Yeah.
- 31:59Nobody's making good decisions here.
- 32:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:02Prior to that, there are other bad decisions made.
- 32:04That's when we get introduced to our.
- 32:06Our friend Marty Augustine.
- 32:07Holy shit.
- 32:09Who is Jesus Christ?
- 32:11Apparently, everybody in LA knows where Marlo lives.
- 32:15Yeah.
- 32:15Yeah, he never.
- 32:16That's what's fascinating to me.
- 32:17He's a private detective, and people are up there all the time.
- 32:22Who's letting them in?
- 32:23The guy at the gate is just over here.
- 32:25And if you do, you know, you compliment him on his impersonation.
- 32:28You're like, yep, he's in there.
- 32:30Malibu Colony guy.
- 32:31That guy's cracking me.
- 32:32The fuck.
- 32:33That guy is the best.
- 32:34I had to figure out who he was.
- 32:36And it's going to blow your mind if you haven't looked.
- 32:38If you have indulge me for a minute.
- 32:41That actor is Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh.
- 32:47So your recollection of Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh, amazing.
- 32:52If you think about it, it's not that far off from his.
- 32:54Walter Brennan.
- 32:56No, no, it was pretty great.
- 32:58Yeah.
- 32:59So it's interesting when we meet so as we get our crime boss storyline.
- 33:06Cause we find out some more about Terry.
- 33:09And we realized he was carrying a bag when Marlo had it right there.
- 33:17Yeah.
- 33:17And we.
- 33:17And we knew what we found a little more about Terry during the interrogation scene in with the police where like Mar's like, oh, yeah, I met him when he was young.
- 33:25Lennox wasn't his name.
- 33:26He was kind of a wannabe hood in many ways.
- 33:29And now we realize, oh, he never really changed.
- 33:32He started doing.
- 33:33You know, he married rich, but was still doing work, probably because he was gambling.
- 33:37You get this idea that he was probably in deep.
- 33:40So he had to deliver $355,000 to folks.
- 33:45And guess what?
- 33:45He.
- 33:46He.
- 33:46He didn't.
- 33:47And now Marlo being in the paper's name is connected to Terry, so he wants his money back.
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:55And pretty serious about it.
- 34:00We can.
- 34:01Yeah, go ahead.
- 34:02He.
- 34:03He meets Marlo outside and brings him up into the apartment.
- 34:06He's got his girlfriend with him in the car and tells her just.
- 34:09Just sit in the car and listen to.
- 34:10Listen to the radio for a while.
- 34:11We'll only get be a couple minutes.
- 34:14So they go up and it's a pretty thorough grilling that our friend Marty is giving.
- 34:53Giving Marlo, by the way.
- 34:54Marty, also not really an actor.
- 34:57Marty is a director, but by trade it's Mark Rydell.
- 35:03You would know him as the director of On Golden Pond.
- 35:05Yeah.
- 35:05Amazing.
- 35:07My mind.
- 35:09It's a fascinating performance of someone who at first is like almost fascinating, charismatic.
- 35:15You're like, this guy is fascinating to me.
- 35:17Right.
- 35:18You know, and I think that's why when that sudden thing of violence happens, it just like, it takes.
- 35:25It takes your breath away because you don't see it coming.
- 35:28You're absolutely stunned by it.
- 35:30Yeah.
- 35:30Because what ends up happening is it's.
- 35:34He's grilling him about, you know, the whereabouts of Terry, whereabouts of the money.
- 35:38Because, you know, $355,000 is quite a bit of money in.
- 35:42In 1973 or 1970, whenever this takes place.
- 35:47And then the girlfriend shows up at the door and he.
- 35:50He sits her down on the.
- 35:52The couch and offers her a Coke.
- 35:54They go into Marlo's ice box and find that he's got what is that?
- 36:00I would say three quarters, but that's being generous about how much Coke is left in the bottle.
- 36:05It cracks me up because it's.
- 36:06So he said, you got a Coke in there?
- 36:09Yeah.
- 36:10He's not lying.
- 36:11There is not lying Coke in there.
- 36:13It is just.
- 36:14It's one of the ice cat in two cysts.
- 36:18The grossest bottle of Coke that could.
- 36:20Possibly get it together, man.
- 36:22Yeah.
- 36:23So.
- 36:24Yeah.
- 36:24So Marty grabs the bottle, finishes the Coke, and then smashes it over his girlfriend's face in one of the most unprompted and stunning bits of violence.
- 36:37Because he was just talking about like, he's like, I have a wife, I have kids.
- 36:39This is where they're at.
- 36:41This is.
- 36:42What's her name?
- 36:43I forget the mistress's name, but, like, is it Dolores?
- 36:47I forget, but she's like.
- 36:48He's like, I basically, literally right before, he's like, she's someone I care about the most in this world.
- 36:53Right.
- 36:53Like, he's talking about how like I care for.
- 36:55And then just.
- 36:57Just smashes this thick glass bottle.
- 37:00Droids this green glass Coke bottle.
- 37:03Like those things are.
- 37:04Yeah.
- 37:05And we see a bit of the reconstruction later and that's a little time after.
- 37:10And then he usually just uses this as a threat.
- 37:12And I like.
- 37:13I like her.
- 37:14I don't like you.
- 37:16Like, that's literally as like this prop moment to almost intimidate.
- 37:21Yeah.
- 37:21Almost verbatim.
- 37:22That's what I would do to someone who I love.
- 37:24Yeah.
- 37:25And I don't like you.
- 37:26Yep.
- 37:27It's like, yeah, yeah.
- 37:29So then you're like, oh, this guy's dangerous.
- 37:30Over with the lesbian commune.
- 37:34Yeah.
- 37:35Grand old time.
- 37:36Had a good time.
- 37:36Yeah.
- 37:36We gotta talk about the nudist yoga people.
- 37:40I love them deeply.
- 37:42Could have had a hash brownie.
- 37:43And so.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:45Yeah.
- 37:46Because what now Marty basically puts detail on Marlo.
- 37:51He puts Harry on him.
- 37:53Right.
- 37:53Oh, oh, oh, bless his heart.
- 37:56This is not the job for Harry.
- 37:58He's not built for this.
- 37:59Because before.
- 38:01Because again, this is another smart move by Marlo.
- 38:03Knowing how this goes is as soon as they leave his apartment, he know he's ahead of where they are at because he knows they're going to watch him and he wants to follow them.
- 38:12Right.
- 38:12So he.
- 38:13He's.
- 38:13By the time he's done, he's ahead of them and gets in his car and he sees that they leave the detail.
- 38:19But here's the thing.
- 38:20He didn't have to worry about it too much because Harry's already seen what the neighbors are Doing.
- 38:26And it's a lot of nude yoga on the, like, outside.
- 38:30Right.
- 38:31And he's got binoculars, so he's looking somewhat in the direction of Marlo's apartment and not thinking why he's not seeing Marlo.
- 38:41The rest of the night, he's fine.
- 38:47The moment he, like, runs, like, him and Marlo at.
- 38:49Or face to face, and he's just like, I think they're lesbians.
- 38:54Oh, God.
- 38:55In.
- 38:55In the morning after, Marlo comes back and just says, hey, how you doing?
- 38:59You're doing great, buddy.
- 39:00Hey.
- 39:00Yeah.
- 39:00And he has a conversation.
- 39:01He's like, well, it's called yoga.
- 39:03I don't know what it is.
- 39:04Yeah.
- 39:06But one of my favorite parts of this movie.
- 39:08One of my.
- 39:09Yeah, it's also like.
- 39:09So he's like, hey, I'm glad.
- 39:10You know what?
- 39:11I'm glad you're.
- 39:12You're on my tail.
- 39:12I feel good.
- 39:13He writes down the address.
- 39:14This is where I'm going to be later in case you lose me in tr.
- 39:17Yeah, yeah, he does.
- 39:19He gives him where he's going.
- 39:22Tells him.
- 39:23Tells him to straighten his tie.
- 39:24Like, the whole thing.
- 39:25Like.
- 39:26Like, you look great, but you really got to fix your tie.
- 39:28You got to.
- 39:28Yeah.
- 39:29He tells the guard to do the.
- 39:31Bit and then do the wall.
- 39:32He loves Walter Bren.
- 39:33And he's with me out.
- 39:35But, like, nah, he is so non.
- 39:38A little bit.
- 39:38Yeah.
- 39:39And then what?
- 39:40When they get there and Marlo, like, goes in and then he just hangs on the gate.
- 39:46Yeah, he's like.
- 39:46He's like, if you're trailing me, yes, I'm not supposed to see you.
- 39:50But before we get too far, we have to remember that.
- 39:52So when Marlo followed Augustine and the revolution, everyone who's not left to ogle at the yoga nudist, like, you see that he goes directly to Eileen Wade.
- 40:05And we do not hear their conversation.
- 40:07But now we know for sure there is a connection.
- 40:09Because his first thought after not being able to find out where Terry's money is.
- 40:13The money that.
- 40:14Well, not Terry's money, his money that Terry had, is to go to Eileen.
- 40:18Which is interesting.
- 40:20Right.
- 40:21And it's very fascinating that we don't really hear what's being said, but we see Marlo is outside, and he goes, okay, so there's another connection.
- 40:27I don't know.
- 40:27And she never mentioned.
- 40:29Right.
- 40:29Like, there's secrets being kept here, you know, because right before, the only connection between the Wades and the Lennox is they both live in Malibu Colony.
- 40:38And they're like, oh, yeah, we you know, saw them.
- 40:41Right.
- 40:42We.
- 40:42Besides that.
- 40:43What?
- 40:44Just.
- 40:44They're just another, you know, rich couple here.
- 40:47So I was like, oh, interesting, interesting.
- 40:51But then.
- 40:51Yeah.
- 40:51So then he returns to Eileen that morning because he's trying to get more information.
- 40:56He.
- 40:57Now he knows that Augustine is involved, so he just.
- 41:03He kind of goes back to the house.
- 41:05And I think that is when.
- 41:07Okay, let me make sure that is.
- 41:08When they have the conversation, because it starts that Roger is starting to feel that maybe Marlo is kind of putting the moves on Eileen a little bit.
- 41:19Yeah.
- 41:20Because he's suave enough and.
- 41:22And you know, Roger.
- 41:24Possible.
- 41:25Yeah.
- 41:25But I also think Roger thinks anybody who is nicer to his wife than he is, which is not hard.
- 41:31He's self aware enough to know that he's kind of a drunk asshole and has hurt his wife.
- 41:36So I think, yeah, anybody.
- 41:37And, you know, Marlo is like the knight errant.
- 41:40He just has that feeling of like he.
- 41:42He would come and, you know, so yeah, he's like, nah, I don't.
- 41:45I don't like this.
- 41:46This guy's coming around.
- 41:47Right.
- 41:49So that, that's where the conversation that we.
- 41:52We were talking about with the two of them and Marlo out on the beach occurs.
- 42:00And then from there, Marlow goes to Mexico.
- 42:03Yeah, he's.
- 42:04He's.
- 42:04He's starting to.
- 42:05One of his several trips because, like, things aren't adding up.
- 42:08And he.
- 42:09Yeah, he's very suspicious about the, The Terry story.
- 42:11So he just goes to the.
- 42:13Goes back into I.
- 42:15Goes to Tijuana again, takes a bus.
- 42:17The rest of the time he's going, it's a bus.
- 42:19And I know they're in California, but I doubt it's a pleasant trip.
- 42:22And he's making this multiple times.
- 42:24Yeah.
- 42:25And there's no air conditioning.
- 42:26That ain't linen.
- 42:27Yeah, it is.
- 42:28Suit.
- 42:29Jeez.
- 42:30And this is.
- 42:31Let's pause for a second.
- 42:32And this is where we kind of get that Rip Van Marlo, man, on a time thing, because it's been multiple situations and multiple, multiple times.
- 42:41And it'll come up again where the suggestion is, what's with the suit?
- 42:49Always got the suit.
- 42:50Yeah, that one part.
- 42:52And you don't see him.
- 42:54He never takes his jacket off as near as I remember.
- 42:57Like, he's always at the end.
- 43:00Yes.
- 43:02And he took the tie off and gave it to Eileen when he went into the water.
- 43:06Right.
- 43:06That's the only time when there's mortal danger.
- 43:09Does he try to.
- 43:10That the tie might slow me down.
- 43:12Yeah.
- 43:13But that crashing man on a Tie.
- 43:15It's an intense scene, but I'm like, the tie.
- 43:17Okay.
- 43:18The tie.
- 43:18Because, yeah, it's a thing that he could get pulled on and, you know, so it's that whole.
- 43:23But he's definitely, like, living that 40s gumshoe archetype where he's never.
- 43:28The fact that he's not wearing a hat is a thing that really, like.
- 43:32I feel like that's his one concession to time is like, somebody.
- 43:38As I was reading about this, somebody's pointed out, like, the president didn't wear a hat, so Marlo wouldn't wear a hat.
- 43:43Okay?
- 43:45That's where that is.
- 43:46So we're post jfk.
- 43:47JFK didn't wear the hat.
- 43:48So now the hat is passe.
- 43:50But we still have to have the suit because we're doing business.
- 43:52We are a certain type of man, right?
- 43:56So he shows up in that woolen suit, you know, walking around the streets of Tijuana, and it is the most.
- 44:03Robert Altman, early 1970s, where it's just, like, verite.
- 44:07And then it's.
- 44:09It's two dogs in flagrante delicto.
- 44:13I feel like I can hear him the other side.
- 44:15Like, no, stay on them.
- 44:16Stay on them.
- 44:17We got reality, and I want you.
- 44:19To pull in on it.
- 44:20I don't want you to.
- 44:21Don't come off of it.
- 44:22I want you to pull in on it.
- 44:23You can't force that bit of reality.
- 44:25Just.
- 44:26It came on to screen.
- 44:27You use it.
- 44:28Gold.
- 44:29That's gold, baby.
- 44:30Yeah.
- 44:31Again, it's.
- 44:32It's another one of those things where it happened and it's like, oh, no.
- 44:35Yeah.
- 44:35This completely encapsulates this movie because that's exactly what this whole thing is.
- 44:39It's just stuff happening.
- 44:41Animalistic.
- 44:41Yep.
- 44:42This is it.
- 44:42This is how it's gonna go.
- 44:43Yeah.
- 44:44And, yeah, Doggy dog.
- 44:45Unfortunately, he.
- 44:46He can't get too far with the coroner, but we get a little.
- 44:51Yeah, he's got the corner.
- 44:53The colonel.
- 44:53The colonel, yeah.
- 44:55So I love that.
- 44:56Here's the thing.
- 44:56I love that they have photos.
- 44:58We get a feeling.
- 44:59Oh, yeah, he's got.
- 45:00He's got photos of.
- 45:01Of in a.
- 45:01Ice.
- 45:02In a box.
- 45:03They.
- 45:03They are set with.
- 45:04Oh, Terry Lennox is absolutely dead.
- 45:07He killed himself.
- 45:08We sent stuff back.
- 45:10We sent everything.
- 45:12Everything.
- 45:12Everything.
- 45:13No, he had two bags.
- 45:14He had two bags.
- 45:15No, we sent everything back.
- 45:17Yeah, one bag.
- 45:19It's all back.
- 45:20Yeah.
- 45:21So.
- 45:21So he's.
- 45:22He's like, okay, that's a wall.
- 45:23But he knows that there's something there.
- 45:25Right.
- 45:25He just can't get it right.
- 45:28And then is that when there's the party at the Wades, where a lot of stuff comes up.
- 45:35Yeah, well, before they had that, it was.
- 45:38There is important that Marlo and Wade did have a conversation out on the beach where.
- 45:44Yeah, because.
- 45:44Because that's where suicide is brought up first.
- 45:48Which I thought was interesting because they're right there on the beach, and I think it's the next day.
- 45:53It is, but it's interesting because, like,.
- 45:55You're getting a little more feeling for Way to.
- 45:57Plus, I know that this was a mostly improvised scene between Sterling Hayden and Elliot Gold.
- 46:03And just.
- 46:04It's talking a bit about what these two guys's world views are.
- 46:09You know, I thought was very.
- 46:10It was very interesting because it's almost like two guys who are seeing are not living in their own time, because.
- 46:16Yeah, we know Marlo, but neither is Wade.
- 46:18I think he had his time.
- 46:19And he's not someone who has the flexibility to change.
- 46:23He is someone who is kind of stuck at that one moment.
- 46:25And now that that moment isn't the same, that he's not.
- 46:28He can't write the big novels anymore.
- 46:30That's what's destroying him.
- 46:32That's what.
- 46:33In many ways.
- 46:33And it kind of sets up maybe why he does what he does the.
- 46:37The next time we see him.
- 46:39Because there's the party at the Wave, and you can tell it's Eileen's.
- 46:42They're all younger folks hanging out.
- 46:44They're.
- 46:44They're improvising the song again.
- 46:47Yeah, they're just like, you know, they're just hanging out, smoking a little drinking.
- 46:51And then Wade is kind of off in the corner being a belligerent and being loud and telling people to come over here and stuff.
- 46:58And then Varinger shows up because he said he come back for his money.
- 47:04And Wade calls him an albino turd, which.
- 47:07Which, like, I feel like classic burn.
- 47:10Great.
- 47:11But then unreliable.
- 47:13Yeah, that's interesting.
- 47:14So we see Wade is very.
- 47:15Like, he's in front of a group of people and you feel like, yeah, he's posturing.
- 47:18Like this guy is nothing.
- 47:20But.
- 47:20Yeah, the earringer just goes up to him and slaps him.
- 47:23And that power dynamic kicks in again where whatever Behringer has over him, whatever power thing, it kicks right in.
- 47:31Because all of a sudden, I almost feel like this is.
- 47:34Yeah, this is almost the moment, I think, where Wade folds completely.
- 47:37Yes.
- 47:38Right.
- 47:38Where he kind of loses that last bit of bravado.
- 47:40Because at first he's like, I'm.
- 47:41I don't know.
- 47:42I'm lost.
- 47:42And then he just folds.
- 47:43Walks into his office to write that check.
- 47:45That Veringer is basically followed him right behind.
- 47:48He's like, sign right there.
- 47:49Like, this is a man.
- 47:50He's no longer a lion.
- 47:52Right.
- 47:53He's a man who thinks he has to be.
- 47:55Right.
- 47:55Yep, yep.
- 47:57Right.
- 47:57And that's, that's essentially where.
- 47:59Where Wade ends like that.
- 48:01That is it for Wade.
- 48:03Yeah.
- 48:03He gets, he, he, he.
- 48:05He continues getting drunk and he falls asleep right there at that desk.
- 48:09Yeah.
- 48:09Then they're having Eileen and Marlo have dinner together.
- 48:13Right.
- 48:14She cooks.
- 48:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:16She's like, you want dinner?
- 48:17And he's like, yeah, you got some cold bologna and a sandwich.
- 48:19And she makes him chicken Kiev.
- 48:22Yeah.
- 48:22It's like a really nice candlelit meal with like multiple.
- 48:26For sure.
- 48:28It is fascinating because I'm always trying to figure out, besides just kind of making sure she knows what he's thinking, where he's going.
- 48:35Like, I just feel like he's.
- 48:36She's.
- 48:37He's not really seducible that way.
- 48:38I think he likes the idea of, oh, she has the same values as me and she needs to be protected.
- 48:44But he's not.
- 48:45He doesn't have the hots for her.
- 48:47No, I don't seems.
- 48:49Yeah.
- 48:50I don't know that this version of Marlo would have the hots for any.
- 48:53Even his neighbors.
- 48:54You think if he was going to have the hots as a, as a red blooded American male.
- 48:59Nah, they just those nice, slightly confusing young women.
- 49:03It is very like out of time for him.
- 49:05Right.
- 49:05Like, that's just what it is.
- 49:06He's like, I don't understand them.
- 49:08And I'm just not even like, buy them brownie mix.
- 49:13It's almost a paternal relationship more than anything with them.
- 49:16He's not even scandalized by bare breasts in the sun.
- 49:19It's just.
- 49:19Oh, that's just not my thing.
- 49:21That's just them doing yoga.
- 49:22Have no clue.
- 49:23That's what they do.
- 49:24They.
- 49:24That's what they told me this was.
- 49:27Yeah.
- 49:27But yeah, I think it has a similar protective vibe towards Eileen.
- 49:31Yeah.
- 49:31Which is another way to be manipulated.
- 49:34Yeah.
- 49:34It comes back to the.
- 49:35It's okay with me.
- 49:36Right.
- 49:36Like.
- 49:36Yeah.
- 49:37Okay.
- 49:38Here's another interesting thing.
- 49:39Right.
- 49:39Okay.
- 50:06So it's the night they are by a window that is facing the crashing waves.
- 50:10Right.
- 50:11And we as the audience see it first.
- 50:13We see that.
- 50:15That Wade is, Is drunkenly kind of st.
- 50:17Well, somewhat drunken.
- 50:19I don't think this is, this is not accidental.
- 50:21He is heading for those waves.
- 50:22Right.
- 50:24It's shot in such an interesting way, though, because you don't really notice it's a person for a little bit.
- 50:29At least I didn't.
- 50:30Yeah.
- 50:30Because what you see is they're talking and it's kind of a two shot in front of this window.
- 50:35So it's the two of them facing each other and then the space between them.
- 50:40Right.
- 50:40It's the reflection and it kind of echoes Marlo out on the beach earlier.
- 50:45And it's like a real soft focus on whatever's happening in the back.
- 50:51And it's just a white blob for a while.
- 50:54You just kind of see something kind of moving out there.
- 50:56And as they talk and as they have this conversation, it starts to become kind of a deep focus and it resolves on the fact that.
- 51:04Oh, shit, that's Roger.
- 51:06Yeah.
- 51:06So what's interesting that happens here, right, as I'm trying to figure out Eileen's deal.
- 51:11Right.
- 51:12She's the one who sees him first.
- 51:15She never had to point it out if she wanted him just dead.
- 51:18Dead.
- 51:18Right.
- 51:19Because in the book she murders Roger.
- 51:22Right.
- 51:23But here, if she wanted him just to go away, she very easily could have redirected Marlo.
- 51:29Marlo wasn't.
- 51:30Yeah.
- 51:30And she doesn't.
- 51:31So that's the thing that gets me, because in that moment, she could have just let that happen and she doesn't.
- 51:36She kind of like yells and screams, which gets Marlo looking and they run out and try to save him.
- 51:41So that doesn't equal completely manipulative, calculating character.
- 51:46That is, whatever is going on between her and Roger is complicated as hell.
- 51:51She wants out.
- 51:52And yet when this presents itself to her, she doesn't take that.
- 51:57That out, you know, because she could have just.
- 51:59They could have walked away from that and she would have been in the clear.
- 52:02Like, oh, my God, where is like.
- 52:03That would have like the perfect answer to that.
- 52:06Right.
- 52:07So that's interesting.
- 52:08And I feel like it's supposed to be a little open ended because it's not black and white.
- 52:13And that's part of why Marlo's a man out of time.
- 52:16Because this is not black and white.
- 52:18Yeah.
- 52:18Everything is really kind of ambiguous with it and that.
- 52:21It's fascinating on that.
- 52:23Then we get a scene that stresses me the out when they're in those waves trying to get Roger, I'm like, did they just throw Elliot Gould?
- 52:30And it's actually in the.
- 52:31In the waves.
- 52:32Like, were there people?
- 52:32Also because those are high waves, it is one of the scariest.
- 52:36I'm like, oh, that's how.
- 52:36Like, he didn't just walk out into a commotion.
- 52:38He walked out into these giant waves that would just crush you out, you know, Like.
- 52:43Yeah, it was definitively terrifying.
- 52:46And for sure, we move on to, like, now he's gone.
- 52:51When does Eileen have that conversation with Marlo about how, like, she chose him and reached out to him because she saw his picture in the paper?
- 53:01I think it was that dinner.
- 53:02Like, her trying to manipulate him.
- 53:04No, I think that that was in a dinner.
- 53:05That was.
- 53:06That was.
- 53:06That was during dinner, for sure.
- 53:08Yeah.
- 53:08Yeah.
- 53:08Oh, absolutely.
- 53:09But also we go, okay.
- 53:11But then she also knows, like, oh, she knows a little bit more about him because she would know.
- 53:15Like, Terry's probably mentioned him.
- 53:16But, like, that's.
- 53:17That's why she chose Marlo.
- 53:19Not because of the paper, but because of Terry and that.
- 53:23I need to watch this guy because, boy, my.
- 53:26My.
- 53:26My.
- 53:26My.
- 53:27My friend's a private investigator.
- 53:29This might.
- 53:31Maybe we should be careful not invol.
- 53:33That I have drop me off.
- 53:35Yeah, right.
- 53:36Like, Terry.
- 53:37What the.
- 53:37Dude, you couldn't talk.
- 53:39Anyway, I think.
- 53:40Here's the thing.
- 53:40I think Terry has no other friends, and he knew anybody else, if he paid his way, would have spilled it to the police.
- 53:47So he.
- 53:48He had to go with the private detective because he actually thought they were friends.
- 53:52But that's what kind of screwed him over in the end, because that's the one person who'd want to know the truth and defend you.
- 53:58And turns out that's why he dug as deep as he did.
- 54:00Yeah.
- 54:01Yeah, yeah.
- 54:01So, yeah, then we get the scene.
- 54:03And you know what's interesting?
- 54:04I.
- 54:04I didn't notice this.
- 54:05I.
- 54:05I wish I could say I was smart enough to have noticed this, having watched a couple times, but I was only reading one essay where they say the movie switches a bit once we have the aftermath of the
- 54:16police are there.
- 54:17Witnesses are there.
- 54:18It's still night on the beach trying to figure out what happened.
- 54:21Roger.
- 54:21And all of a sudden, you get a lot less talking.
- 54:24Talking over and the color.
- 54:26The footage gets a lot more focused.
- 54:28There's a lot less of that gauziness.
- 54:30And the colors almost get a little sharper, as if Marlo is starting to find the focus that he didn't have, which I thought makes sense.
- 54:37Like, things start sharpening because now.
- 54:40Now a shift is happening.
- 54:42It's coming into, like.
- 54:43Yeah, it's coming in clear for him.
- 54:46Yeah, it's.
- 54:46Yeah.
- 54:47Wade had a realization, and it destroyed him.
- 54:50Marlo's having a realization, and is it going to destroy him?
- 54:53Oh, yeah, because he's out of character.
- 54:55He's literally yelling at the cops.
- 54:58Which, like.
- 54:58Right.
- 55:00He's yelling at Eileen.
- 55:02Yeah, he's yelling at Eileen.
- 55:03Like, you tell me.
- 55:04Like, because he's.
- 55:05This is what he thinks he's figured out right now.
- 55:07He's like, oh, okay, I know what happened.
- 55:10Roger had an affair with Sylvia, who is Terry's wife.
- 55:14Right.
- 55:14And then Roger got so upset because he saw how violent he is, and he said, oh, well, that makes sense.
- 55:19He's someone who could beat someone to death.
- 55:21It's not my.
- 55:22My friend Terry.
- 55:23Right.
- 55:24And then he goes to the police and starts yelling.
- 55:26And that's where you find out the police have been very much ahead of him.
- 55:29And they're like, oh, no, we.
- 55:31We know Roger and Sylvia, but we followed him.
- 55:33We know they met.
- 55:34We know that when he left, she was alive.
- 55:36And we know he went right to Varinger's.
- 55:38Like, oh, this is all knowledge.
- 55:40We just have.
- 55:41That's what they blow.
- 55:42Like, he.
- 55:43Marlo has, like, this, like, line that's like, oh, I figured it out.
- 55:46And it's just casually blasted away.
- 55:48And the police are like, go back to your gum shoes or whatever.
- 55:51Like, they are just super dismissive of him.
- 55:53He's like.
- 55:53They're like, you don't know what you're talking about.
- 55:54And he kind of doesn't in a different way, but he doesn't know the truth because I don't think he's ready for it.
- 56:00He's getting there.
- 56:01He's spiraling.
- 56:03And what is he yelling?
- 56:04I'm gonna call the President.
- 56:06Oh, yeah.
- 56:06He's like.
- 56:08Because he said, I'm calling Nixon.
- 56:09That's it.
- 56:10Or whatever.
- 56:12Okay.
- 56:12Yeah, yeah.
- 56:14He's at the point he's having a realization, too, and it's.
- 56:16Well, what's he gonna.
- 56:17What's he.
- 56:18What's he gonna do.
- 56:18Do with this?
- 56:21I think.
- 56:21Is it the next time we see him, is it Augustine's again?
- 56:24It's.
- 56:25He gets the letter from Terry.
- 56:26Oh, yes.
- 56:27Which is so interesting because there are several times where he's tries to get his mail and he's not able to.
- 56:33And we all.
- 56:33Now we know.
- 56:33Oh, that letter was sitting in there.
- 56:35Yeah.
- 56:36Hanging around.
- 56:37Just hanging.
- 56:38Or he opens it.
- 56:38It's literally just.
- 56:39Was it.
- 56:40It's like, sorry, Philip, goodbye, and a $5,000.
- 56:46$5,000 bill.
- 56:47James Madison.
- 56:48Is that who he's.
- 56:48James Madison?
- 56:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:50I did not know that, but I know because now when he's talking about the President, Madison, he's a grand president.
- 56:57A five grand prince.
- 56:58Five grand president.
- 57:00Yeah, you're.
- 57:01You're like, okay, so what the hell does this.
- 57:03But then.
- 57:03Yeah, because then, let's see, that's when he gets picked up by.
- 57:06That's when he gets picked up by Augustine and they go back to his office, right?
- 57:10Right.
- 57:10And that's where we see one of his thugs is a young Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 57:17With a dashing little mustache.
- 57:19Yeah.
- 57:20It's so silly.
- 57:22Oh, God, it's so gross.
- 57:24Because this is just.
- 57:25Right now, it's just Augustine's shaking him down again, right?
- 57:27It starts with Augustine's like, listen, you know you're supposed to be looking for this money, right?
- 57:30I put you on this if you say you don't have it, right?
- 57:33And then he tells the story because he brings in his.
- 57:36His girlfriend and she just is like, just wrapped up.
- 57:40No, you can tell they had to reconstruct the surgery.
- 57:42She's got some sort of dental device in, like, she.
- 57:45And she is also terrified the entire time.
- 57:48This woman is now terrified because she knows, right?
- 57:50But also, what's she gonna do?
- 57:52Because he's terrifying, right?
- 57:53And he tells this story because this is the person that he thinks he is.
- 57:58He think.
- 57:59Augustine thinks he's like this great guy.
- 58:01He's talking about how, like, I came into her.
- 58:03Her hospital bed, the one that he put her in, right?
- 58:06And he's like, I.
- 58:06I realized, like, I was angry at you, not her, so no one else was there.
- 58:09So I.
- 58:10I took off all my clothes and I apologize naked to her.
- 58:13Which is like, the.
- 58:14Is wrong with this dude, right?
- 58:16And he's just absolves him.
- 58:19And now he's like, okay, so, Marlo, you're gonna get naked and apologize.
- 58:24In fact, we're all gonna get naked.
- 58:27Poor with it.
- 58:27Harry is like, not into this.
- 58:29Yeah.
- 58:30He's like, what?
- 58:31First of all, oh.
- 58:33He's like, I have scars.
- 58:34I'm embarrassed.
- 58:35And he's like, go ahead.
- 58:37Which I thought, again, weird characterization.
- 58:40He's like, oh, no.
- 58:40One of my henchmen is not cool with this.
- 58:42That's okay, buddy.
- 58:43You don't have to do it.
- 58:45It's very progressive.
- 58:46Yeah.
- 58:47The.
- 58:47So we're getting to the point where.
- 58:48And then he's gonna make.
- 58:49Is it Harry or Henry?
- 58:50I'm sorry?
- 58:51Harry.
- 58:51Harry.
- 58:52Yeah.
- 58:52Okay, so they're partial.
- 58:53And then, oh, this poor kid.
- 58:56We're obviously like, okay, so we're gonna cut off Marlo's dick.
- 59:00And you're gonna do it and you can.
- 59:02He's like, wait, what do you remember?
- 59:05Do you remember the reason why?
- 59:06Oh, no, I gotta be honest, I don't remember there being a reason where I said, oh, this makes sense.
- 59:11One of the funniest lines in the movie, because he looks at him, he goes, harry, your uncle's a mole.
- 59:16God, this kid.
- 59:20This kid cannot catch a break.
- 59:21I'm like this.
- 59:22I just really hope, no matter what, that he maybe had a realization that, like, perhaps this isn't the life for him.
- 59:28He's not built for this.
- 59:30Right?
- 59:30Go.
- 59:30Go get a job at the post office, bud.
- 59:32Because this is really.
- 59:33But timing wise, all of a sudden, our poor embarrassed scar guy comes back in before the party really starts, and he's like, hey, there's something really important.
- 59:43I gotta.
- 59:43There's something really, really important.
- 59:45So all of them half dressed.
- 59:48Go.
- 59:48Go off the roof.
- 59:49Yeah.
- 59:50He's like, everybody get over here.
- 59:52Yeah.
- 59:53Jesus in their shorty shorts.
- 59:55Right?
- 59:55And Marl's like, oh, okay, I'll just put my.
- 59:58I'll put my.
- 59:59That's it.
- 59:59He puts his jacket back on because that's as far as it got.
- 1:00:01Yep.
- 1:00:02And he picks up the wallet.
- 1:00:04Or like, right with the wallet.
- 1:00:05Oh, right.
- 1:00:06Because the wallet is where that 5,000 was.
- 1:00:10Was like, oh, oh, wait, Terry.
- 1:00:12Terry had a couple of these dollar bills.
- 1:00:14So you must know where the money is.
- 1:00:16I think that's what intensified it.
- 1:00:17Yeah.
- 1:00:18He's like, yeah, 100% that.
- 1:00:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:20But, you know, it's.
- 1:00:21It's fine because Augustine's a real standup dude.
- 1:00:24Because when Marlo goes out, he realizes that Eileen dropped off the money, that 355,000 and.
- 1:00:31Oh, boy.
- 1:00:32You know what?
- 1:00:33I'm sorry.
- 1:00:33You are a standup guy.
- 1:00:34I'm really sorry.
- 1:00:35Here's that five thousand dollar bill.
- 1:00:37Yet this five thousand for all trouble.
- 1:00:40If you have to meet a guy.
- 1:00:41You can call, you can come around anytime.
- 1:00:44Sorry for the misunderstanding.
- 1:00:45Right.
- 1:00:46Jesus.
- 1:00:46Yeah, I respect your honesty, so you can keep that five grand.
- 1:00:51But that's what.
- 1:00:51So Marlo goes off and he sees Eileen running away, and he starts running after because, like, what the.
- 1:00:56What?
- 1:00:56What the hell was that?
- 1:00:57So you had that money, right?
- 1:01:00Like, so, like he's.
- 1:01:01And he's just running through the streets of la, like, driving away from.
- 1:01:06She's not even looking.
- 1:01:07Yeah, she's just.
- 1:01:08And she's got almost like a.
- 1:01:09Hey.
- 1:01:09Everything's working the way it needs to look, you know?
- 1:01:11Like, this is like the last thing I had this last circle.
- 1:01:14I had to close before whatever's next.
- 1:01:16Right.
- 1:01:17And actually, he keeps up pretty good up until he gets slapped by that car.
- 1:01:23Yeah.
- 1:01:23He.
- 1:01:23He gets hit pretty good.
- 1:01:26Knocks him out.
- 1:01:26And then cut to the hospital where there's a man in a full body cast.
- 1:01:31Fascinating.
- 1:01:31Just a little harmonica.
- 1:01:33Yeah.
- 1:01:34I think the misdirect in this scene makes me so happy because it gets hit by the car.
- 1:01:39Hard shot 2 total wrapped up body in a hospital.
- 1:01:42Be like, oh, no, full body pass.
- 1:01:46Yeah.
- 1:01:46I just pan over, pans over to.
- 1:01:49Marlo, and he's maybe got a band aid.
- 1:01:51Yeah, He's.
- 1:01:53He's.
- 1:01:53He's pretty.
- 1:01:53He's pretty tough.
- 1:01:55The only time he's out of the suit is when he's in his gown.
- 1:01:58Yeah.
- 1:01:58In this bed.
- 1:01:59And I love his instant.
- 1:02:00Thing is.
- 1:02:00I got it.
- 1:02:01Like, gets up.
- 1:02:01All right, I'm out of here.
- 1:02:02Nothing broken.
- 1:02:03Okay.
- 1:02:03Yeah.
- 1:02:04Just goes to get his suit and then.
- 1:02:06Yeah.
- 1:02:06Clothes.
- 1:02:07And takes a little harmonica that his neighbor gives as a gift and insists.
- 1:02:11He's like, no.
- 1:02:11Like, we can't.
- 1:02:13He's not verbal, but he's, like, pointing with his bandaged hand.
- 1:02:16Oh, for me?
- 1:02:17Okay.
- 1:02:18Yes.
- 1:02:18Which I think is what.
- 1:02:19That's the call if a totally bandaged person really wants you to have that harmonica.
- 1:02:24Just take it.
- 1:02:24Take it.
- 1:02:25Yeah, I can't take that.
- 1:02:26I got a tin ear.
- 1:02:28Yeah.
- 1:02:29What the.
- 1:02:29What the mar.
- 1:02:30Oh, and the nurse.
- 1:02:32Him with the nurse is killing me, cuz.
- 1:02:33What do you mean?
- 1:02:34You're not a patient in a hospital gown, sir.
- 1:02:36Yeah, that's it.
- 1:02:37He's like, I'm just checking by.
- 1:02:38She doesn't care.
- 1:02:40Yeah.
- 1:02:40Yeah.
- 1:02:41She's like, all right, whatever.
- 1:02:42Off.
- 1:02:42I don't know what happened.
- 1:02:43I don't know what's going.
- 1:02:45Yeah.
- 1:02:45I don't get paid enough.
- 1:02:46Basically.
- 1:02:47Just.
- 1:02:49That's when he goes back to Mexico.
- 1:02:51Correct.
- 1:02:52No, wait.
- 1:02:52Yep.
- 1:02:52No, no, no.
- 1:02:54First he goes back to the Wade's house, which has a for sale sign on it.
- 1:02:59All of a sudden.
- 1:03:00And all these ladies are packaging up all of the goods and discussing that, and they refer to him as, like, Mr.
- 1:03:06Candy or something.
- 1:03:07Yeah.
- 1:03:07They think he's somebody else.
- 1:03:08Yeah.
- 1:03:10He's the new broker to buy that by the house.
- 1:03:12Yeah.
- 1:03:13And they're like, eileen.
- 1:03:13I don't.
- 1:03:14Maybe she's in here.
- 1:03:14We don't know.
- 1:03:15Like this, basically.
- 1:03:16We don't know.
- 1:03:16You'd have to, you know, that we can't disclose.
- 1:03:19So she.
- 1:03:19She's gone.
- 1:03:20So that's when he takes an Another bus trip to Mexico, but Tijuana.
- 1:03:27Yeah.
- 1:03:27With it.
- 1:03:27With, with that $5,000 bill.
- 1:03:31Madison on a road trip.
- 1:03:32And I really love this shot in that.
- 1:03:35This entire conversation.
- 1:03:36He has a second conversation with the coroner and that police officer.
- 1:03:39I love the idea that we got to do it in the car because you get this feeling like it's, you know, and basically are just following the car where they have this conversation that's just like, hey, I just
- 1:03:48wanted to look into this a little more.
- 1:03:50Also, I know that you're trying to help your, your town.
- 1:03:52I would love to give a donation for the civic duty of like.
- 1:03:57And then you just see, right, it's.
- 1:03:59The dog console, kind of like the.
- 1:04:01Middle of the seat where he's just.
- 1:04:03Passing it over and it's like, we're talking about Madison.
- 1:04:05Yeah.
- 1:04:05He was a grand president.
- 1:04:07Like, it's.
- 1:04:08The conversation's fun of like, you've got people who aren't saying what they're doing, but saying what they're doing.
- 1:04:13It's hilarious.
- 1:04:14Yeah.
- 1:04:14Yeah.
- 1:04:14I'd like to donate a portrait of one of the great presidents.
- 1:04:17Madison.
- 1:04:19He's a grand president.
- 1:04:20A five grand president.
- 1:04:22And that's why.
- 1:04:23And of course, like, oh, yeah.
- 1:04:25So here's the thing.
- 1:04:25I shot Terry up with some drugs.
- 1:04:27So he looked dead.
- 1:04:28We faked the photo, we faked the drug.
- 1:04:30Oh, he's still alive.
- 1:04:31I know where he is.
- 1:04:32Singing like a canary.
- 1:04:33Yeah.
- 1:04:34Right.
- 1:04:34To him, that's where another one of those five thousands went.
- 1:04:36We find out.
- 1:04:37Yep.
- 1:04:38Yeah.
- 1:04:38So they're doing great and we basically.
- 1:04:41They're 10 up.
- 1:04:42Yeah.
- 1:04:43I can only assume they drop him off here because the next thing we see, he's walking up this tree lined road to where he.
- 1:04:50Where the denouement is going to happen.
- 1:04:53To this beautiful grotto that Terry is hanging out in.
- 1:04:55Just a hammock.
- 1:04:57Right.
- 1:04:57Yeah.
- 1:04:57Chilling in a hammock, waiting.
- 1:05:00Vibing is the perfect way to put it too.
- 1:05:02Yeah.
- 1:05:04Colada.
- 1:05:05Yeah.
- 1:05:05And holy his audacity.
- 1:05:08Right.
- 1:05:08Because you've got Marlo there.
- 1:05:09And.
- 1:05:10And he's like, oh, I should have known you.
- 1:05:11And then he's like, well, you know, basically because Marlow wants to know, why did you set me up?
- 1:05:16Basically.
- 1:05:16Right.
- 1:05:17Like, why am I.
- 1:05:18Well, and he's like, oh, that's just like, you know, that's what friends do.
- 1:05:21Yeah.
- 1:05:22Like a lot in life.
- 1:05:23Because you're right.
- 1:05:24Yeah.
- 1:05:24He calls him a born loser, tells.
- 1:05:27Him you're a born loser.
- 1:05:28And that was about all Marlo could take at that point.
- 1:05:31Yeah, and like.
- 1:05:32Yeah.
- 1:05:33And like clockwork, he just pulls the.
- 1:05:35Revolver and shoots Terry.
- 1:05:38Takes care of Terry.
- 1:05:39One thing that Terry, I don't think would ever expect, because Marlo has changed,.
- 1:05:43And it's so far out of Marlow's character that we've seen for the past two hours as he's just gotten put upon and redirected.
- 1:05:53And, yeah, he just reaches a boy.
- 1:05:55I think the whole thing is like.
- 1:05:56So the whole reason was loyalty to a friend.
- 1:05:59Like, this was one of his core beliefs.
- 1:06:01That was his last core belief would be, well, if we're friends, he'd do the same for me.
- 1:06:06And now that he realized how easily he was lied to.
- 1:06:08Not just lied to, but set up like Terry did not give a shit what was going to happen to Marlo, there's a really good chance Augustine would have just killed Marlo.
- 1:06:16Oh, yeah.
- 1:06:16You know, like, the only reason that Eileen returned the money, as we understand, is because they know Augustine is violent and would never have stopped.
- 1:06:24They had to close that circle.
- 1:06:25They had to tie that thread, because then now Terry's dead and the money's returned.
- 1:06:31No one can.
- 1:06:31Because that's.
- 1:06:32He says, Terry says, listen, money's returned.
- 1:06:34I'm dead.
- 1:06:34Nobody cares.
- 1:06:36And I think the problem is, as much as Marlo keeps saying it's okay by me, it's not.
- 1:06:43Not in this moment.
- 1:06:44In this moment, it is not okay by him.
- 1:06:47This is a line that was crossed.
- 1:06:49And it's like he has no other way to resolve this except.
- 1:06:53Well, no.
- 1:06:54And he.
- 1:06:55Yeah.
- 1:06:55Kills his friend.
- 1:06:56Well, friend.
- 1:06:57Right.
- 1:06:57Yeah.
- 1:06:58Not even just the betrayal, but that Terry acts so laissez faire about the.
- 1:07:02Fact it was nothing.
- 1:07:03His wife.
- 1:07:05Oh, oh, you're right.
- 1:07:07I saw the photos.
- 1:07:08He's like, I saw the photos because we forgot.
- 1:07:12Forgot the whole thing.
- 1:07:13Roger wasn't having an affair with Sylvia.
- 1:07:16Eileen was having an affair with Terry.
- 1:07:19The reason that Roger had gone over to Sylvia is to tell her that your husband's having an affair with my wife.
- 1:07:24And then when Sylvia confronted Terry about this, Terry got really upset, partly because of the money that he had of Augustine's.
- 1:07:32So, yeah, basically, to cover his own ass, he beat his own wife to death.
- 1:07:36And in a way that the photo is apparently terrifying.
- 1:07:38It's not just, oh, I shot someone in the.
- 1:07:41In the heat of passion, he pummeled her to death.
- 1:07:44So you're right.
- 1:07:44Yes.
- 1:07:45It wasn't just a friend.
- 1:07:45It was the fact that his friend, that he just insisted up and down, could never murder so casually and easily.
- 1:07:52Did that and then just took the fuck off.
- 1:07:54And even at this point, isn't like, I'm so sad.
- 1:07:56I had to do it.
- 1:07:57It was like, oh, no.
- 1:07:58He's like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:59This is just how it had to go.
- 1:08:01Yep, yep.
- 1:08:02It was.
- 1:08:02It was Marlo rejecting like an entire era, I would say.
- 1:08:06Yeah.
- 1:08:06Like, he is just.
- 1:08:07He is just done.
- 1:08:09And then I love that last shot because now he's walking back down that tree line.
- 1:08:13He starts playing the harmonica.
- 1:08:15We see Eileen in a jeep driving down like, you know that she's all like, all right, I returned the money.
- 1:08:20Me and Terry.
- 1:08:21And Terry was happy because she's got money.
- 1:08:23So they didn't even need Augustine's money.
- 1:08:24They're just like, la, la.
- 1:08:25Everything.
- 1:08:26And then she sees Marlo and she knows.
- 1:08:29She knows that they're caught and something bad has probably happened.
- 1:08:32Like that happy ending is no longer.
- 1:08:34And then she goes.
- 1:08:35He's just the entire.
- 1:08:36Like, as the credits roll, it's just Marlo walking down this tree lined road now that there's other people there.
- 1:08:43As if he's going back into the world in a way.
- 1:08:45Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:45He spins that one woman.
- 1:08:48Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:48And it's like, I.
- 1:08:49He's.
- 1:08:50He's gonna have to keep moving forward.
- 1:08:51Right.
- 1:08:52Like, that's just it.
- 1:08:53Just move.
- 1:08:53Moving forward.
- 1:08:54Continuing on.
- 1:08:55Business has been concluded.
- 1:08:56Lessons learned.
- 1:08:58There's no black and white to it, but for Marlo, there was a line.
- 1:09:02Yeah.
- 1:09:03Yeah.
- 1:09:03So something still held, at least with Marlon.
- 1:09:06Yeah.
- 1:09:06Now we can go home and try to find his cat.
- 1:09:07Yeah.
- 1:09:08Right.
- 1:09:09On the way home.
- 1:09:09Yeah.
- 1:09:10Get some cat.
- 1:09:10Yeah.
- 1:09:10Just get a.
- 1:09:11Get a case of it.
- 1:09:13Yeah.
- 1:09:14This was.
- 1:09:16I hadn't seen this before.
- 1:09:17I don't know.
- 1:09:18Kp had you seen it?
- 1:09:20So this was my first time and absolutely blown away by it.
- 1:09:24This has become one of my favorite movies.
- 1:09:28There's just so much to it.
- 1:09:29Elliot Gould is incredible in it.
- 1:09:30And like.
- 1:09:31Oh, yeah.
- 1:09:32Blown away.
- 1:09:32Marlowe every step of the way.
- 1:09:34Because you're not exactly sure what he's gonna do.
- 1:09:36Like, that's it.
- 1:09:37Just that mumbling weirdness.
- 1:09:39Yeah.
- 1:09:40Where he's just talking to himself and.
- 1:09:42Yeah.
- 1:09:42Kind of being silly, like.
- 1:09:44Yeah.
- 1:09:45There's stumbling through life in many ways until a thing happens and he has to.
- 1:09:50A decision has to be made.
- 1:09:52Right.
- 1:09:52Yeah.
- 1:09:53The.
- 1:09:53The description I saw was sleepwalking through the movie.
- 1:09:57You know, from.
- 1:09:58From the moment we meet him, he wakes up and he's sleepwalking for.
- 1:10:01He's a bit drowned.
- 1:10:02Hour and 40 minutes.
- 1:10:03Yeah.
- 1:10:04You Know, even though he talks is just very mumbly.
- 1:10:07And so I'm ambulant, you know, It's.
- 1:10:09It's.
- 1:10:10Yeah.
- 1:10:10What is very interesting is one of Altman's decisions in this film is the camera never stops moving.
- 1:10:16If you reckon.
- 1:10:17I want you to see, like, there is not a still shot in this film.
- 1:10:20Even when, like things normally would.
- 1:10:22The camera's always just a little going this way, a little this way.
- 1:10:24Yeah, it's.
- 1:10:25It drifts.
- 1:10:26Literally.
- 1:10:26The camera drifts like Marlo drifts, which I.
- 1:10:28I love as a choice.
- 1:10:29There's reflections.
- 1:10:30We're never getting a clear view until later in the movie.
- 1:10:34Like, we are very much putting Marlo's viewpoint in that.
- 1:10:37Everything's kind of.
- 1:10:38No, nothing is like, solidifying the way that a film noir detective would want it to be.
- 1:10:44You know, it's just like nothing is good, bad, right away.
- 1:10:49Right.
- 1:10:50So it's interesting to see, like, we're frustrated with him.
- 1:10:54Yeah.
- 1:10:54You know, he's the truly.
- 1:10:56Yeah.
- 1:10:56Cause he's the only anchor point.
- 1:10:58And he's not a great anchor point.
- 1:10:59No, he's drifting too.
- 1:11:01Yeah.
- 1:11:03It dawned on me that exact thing with the camera.
- 1:11:05It dawned on me in that conversation between the Wades when he's out on the beach, right.
- 1:11:11And they're having that shot, and it's coming through the windows, and she's there and she's framed in the window and.
- 1:11:19And she's center frame.
- 1:11:20And then all of a sudden, it's drifting to the point that she's just, like, in the corner.
- 1:11:24And that's where you see Marlo kind of half frolicking, trying to half avoiding the ocean.
- 1:11:30Yeah.
- 1:11:30You know, and it's.
- 1:11:31It's.
- 1:11:31And that's where I was like, oh, shit.
- 1:11:33This is always just kind of shifting with your perception.
- 1:11:37And I don't want to say dreamlike, because it's not really dreamlike.
- 1:11:39It's just.
- 1:11:40There's no anchor.
- 1:11:41There's no nothing to hold on to here.
- 1:11:45Everybody's awake.
- 1:11:46Might not be in a full dream, but you're not fully awake.
- 1:11:49Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:51It's.
- 1:11:51It's fascinating.
- 1:11:52It's very.
- 1:11:53I don't know if I want to hear me call Altman a Vibes based director, but I do think that Vibes are important.
- 1:12:03That same thing that he ends up doing in Nashville, where it is just all these different characters.
- 1:12:08I think he's very interested in putting a bunch of characters in a space and then just kind of documenting what auditory as well as visual, what happens Very rarely in life is there like.
- 1:12:17Like a part where you, like, everything is focused in and you can hear everything.
- 1:12:20There's stuff happening and you are learning through immersion, like learning about these characters.
- 1:12:26So I love that verite, but not.
- 1:12:30It's.
- 1:12:30Yeah.
- 1:12:31And that's.
- 1:12:32I, again, because I did a bunch of reading about this because this movie captivated me and I was like, I need to know more.
- 1:12:38And somebody was like, yeah, this is kind of the dress rehearsal.
- 1:12:41Rehearsal for Nashville.
- 1:12:43I can see that.
- 1:12:43Yeah.
- 1:12:44Totally makes sense.
- 1:12:45If you think about it.
- 1:12:45If you haven't seen Nashville, see it.
- 1:12:47Because it's.
- 1:12:48I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's a pretty good movie.
- 1:12:53Altman knew a lot about America.
- 1:12:55And Yeah.
- 1:12:56Nashville in many ways is like.
- 1:12:58He's like.
- 1:12:58Because I feel like Long Goodbye is about LA in the 70s.
- 1:13:01Yeah.
- 1:13:01And I feel like Nashville is about America in the 70s.
- 1:13:06Exactly.
- 1:13:06Yeah.
- 1:13:07And where it's.
- 1:13:08You kind of see the.
- 1:13:10The death of post war California in.
- 1:13:14In this.
- 1:13:15You see kind of post war America in Nashville.
- 1:13:18So it's kind of a Cool.
- 1:13:19You know, because I think this comes like, right.
- 1:13:21Is.
- 1:13:22Is mash just before this.
- 1:13:23It's before.
- 1:13:23Yeah.
- 1:13:24Because that's where he worked at school before.
- 1:13:25Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:26So, like.
- 1:13:27And that's kind of.
- 1:13:28It's an interesting way to look at it.
- 1:13:29Is that, like.
- 1:13:30That's.
- 1:13:31That's the war film.
- 1:13:32And this is kind of the fallout film from that.
- 1:13:34To me, at least.
- 1:13:35I'm just expositing that.
- 1:13:37I'm could be full of.
- 1:13:38But it.
- 1:13:41It strikes me that way, at least.
- 1:13:43Nashville's 75.
- 1:13:44So that's two years after this.
- 1:13:46Two years removed.
- 1:13:46Yeah.
- 1:13:47So it's.
- 1:13:47Yeah.
- 1:13:48Well worth watching.
- 1:13:48I mean, it has more than one song.
- 1:13:51Just so anyone knows if.
- 1:13:52In case the Long Goodbye was Maybe I enjoyed it.
- 1:13:55But just in case Nashville has multiple songs.
- 1:13:57So, you know, here's the thing.
- 1:13:59So if we're in Nashville.
- 1:14:01Yeah.
- 1:14:01I worried if they were all singing the same song.
- 1:14:03Correct.
- 1:14:04Exactly.
- 1:14:04I will say this for the amount of movies that you've seen with John Williams doing a score where you're like, oh, yeah, no, that's.
- 1:14:11That's John Williams.
- 1:14:12That's Jaws.
- 1:14:13That's Jurassic Park.
- 1:14:14That's Star Wars Motherfucker.
- 1:14:16This is John Williams.
- 1:14:17And it's.
- 1:14:18So it's John Williams and Johnny Mercer that did this song.
- 1:14:21And it will earworm you to death.
- 1:14:23Yeah.
- 1:14:24The doorbell.
- 1:14:26The Wade's house.
- 1:14:27The doorbell is the song.
- 1:14:28At one point I was like, if I look this is.
- 1:14:30I.
- 1:14:30I love it because it just ties it through because it's almost infinite variations of the same idea.
- 1:14:36And I think for me, that ties back into.
- 1:14:38And I just.
- 1:14:39This time I've rewatched it.
- 1:14:41I really narrowed down to both Roger Wade and Philip Marlowe come to a breaking point.
- 1:14:48And the movie's about which.
- 1:14:50What each of them do.
- 1:14:51And in the end, Marlo is flexible while Wade is not.
- 1:14:55And Marlo is able to change.
- 1:14:57And I feel like in a way, like the way the song keeps changing depending on where it is.
- 1:15:02It's con.
- 1:15:02It's contextual.
- 1:15:04It's.
- 1:15:04I feel like Marlo can adjust to his environment.
- 1:15:07Not completely.
- 1:15:08He's not gonna do nude yoga, but he can.
- 1:15:12He.
- 1:15:12He's cool with it.
- 1:15:13Like, this is something.
- 1:15:14Yeah, it's okay with me.
- 1:15:16It's okay.
- 1:15:16Exactly.
- 1:15:17So many things are okay with him.
- 1:15:18And that's why he can keep moving on while still having a core of stuff.
- 1:15:22Because I think Wade doesn't have a core anymore.
- 1:15:25He doesn't know who he is.
- 1:15:27You're right.
- 1:15:27He's.
- 1:15:28He's a master.
- 1:15:28He's.
- 1:15:29He's adrift.
- 1:15:30He's trying to hold on to these last little bits of, you know, the, The.
- 1:15:34The Hemingway standard.
- 1:15:35Like, he's like the man's man in a world where the man's man has been devalued.
- 1:15:39At a certain point, I feel like.
- 1:15:41Yeah.
- 1:15:42And that's where he ends up with Dr.
- 1:15:43Landy and all that other stuff.
- 1:15:45Yeah.
- 1:15:45Sorry, Dr.
- 1:15:46V.
- 1:15:46No, I.
- 1:15:47I know.
- 1:15:47I think that's why you would figure someone like that might shoot themselves.
- 1:15:52Like, that's the very.
- 1:15:53But he walks the waves almost as if, like I.
- 1:15:57The world can take me.
- 1:15:59Like, I can't even do that action that he might have written about earlier about being the man's way.
- 1:16:04Yes.
- 1:16:05And I think that's very interesting.
- 1:16:06Well, the man's man can't make it.
- 1:16:09Marlo, who is not a man's man.
- 1:16:12He is himself.
- 1:16:13He is just who he needs to be.
- 1:16:14Can make it.
- 1:16:16Even when a horrible betrayal happens, he still can walk down the tree lined avenue playing at least little tiny harmonica he got from a dude in the hospital.
- 1:16:28Because he can continue on that hope.
- 1:16:31Where like right in this whole movie, he's trying to have human connection.
- 1:16:34Yeah.
- 1:16:35Yeah.
- 1:16:36Right.
- 1:16:36He hasn't completely shut that off.
- 1:16:38Yeah.
- 1:16:39He talks to people all the time.
- 1:16:41I love that he meets the guy from the grocery store at jail because.
- 1:16:45Because they got you too.
- 1:16:47How's your cat?
- 1:16:48Okay.
- 1:16:48How's your girl?
- 1:16:49She's fine.
- 1:16:49They got her for doing.
- 1:16:50For being at a protest.
- 1:16:51Like that's connection.
- 1:16:53They.
- 1:16:53They remembered they had talked and they remembered the talking points.
- 1:16:57Which was Cat and girl.
- 1:16:58Yeah.
- 1:16:59Yeah.
- 1:16:59Which by the way, throwback to another movie we'll watch.
- 1:17:02I'm pretty sure the supermarket that he's buying the cat food in is the same one from Stone Cold.
- 1:17:06Anyway.
- 1:17:08Oh my God.
- 1:17:08That's okay.
- 1:17:09I hope that's not a registry.
- 1:17:11Right.
- 1:17:12This is what I mean.
- 1:17:13Historic.
- 1:17:14Right?
- 1:17:14Guys, Guys.
- 1:17:15Goodbye and Stone Cold.
- 1:17:16Stone Cold were both filmed here.
- 1:17:18The boss stood right here in a trench coat.
- 1:17:22The boss and Elliot Gould.
- 1:17:24Okay.
- 1:17:24I'm fine.
- 1:17:25Let's get Grover and then we'll have.
- 1:17:27The set will be complete.
- 1:17:28Right.
- 1:17:30Couple other things to call out just from a trivial standpoint.
- 1:17:34Elliot Gould.
- 1:17:35The best quote about it was I was just looking to have continuity with the cigarette for most of the film.
- 1:17:41Just focused on the only man smoking in the entire film.
- 1:17:46Does not smoke.
- 1:17:47God, he's so sick.
- 1:17:52There is not a scene in this film where he doesn't have a heater going.
- 1:17:59Which also the talent he has with finding any surface to light a match off of.
- 1:18:04Yeah.
- 1:18:05Is one of the funniest running jokes in this film is where he's finding a spot to light a match off the bar.
- 1:18:11Off nightstand.
- 1:18:12Off the ground.
- 1:18:13Because he's adaptable and flexible.
- 1:18:16That's his strength.
- 1:18:16100%.
- 1:18:17Yeah.
- 1:18:18I was like, oh, what is he going to do now?
- 1:18:20And I'm like, there's a candle.
- 1:18:21Lights it off.
- 1:18:22The candle.
- 1:18:22Boom.
- 1:18:23Yeah.
- 1:18:24Yeah.
- 1:18:25Way ahead of you.
- 1:18:25You know, he doesn't have to do anything.
- 1:18:27Just lean forward.
- 1:18:28Yeah.
- 1:18:29So Sterling Hayden wasn't the original.
- 1:18:31Wade, I don't know if you ran into this at all.
- 1:18:33Oh yeah.
- 1:18:34Was it Meg.
- 1:18:34Dan Blocker from Dan Blocker.
- 1:18:37Hoss from Bonanza.
- 1:18:38Which would have made this movie completely different.
- 1:18:40Different.
- 1:18:41I don't.
- 1:18:42Are you familiar.
- 1:18:43Are you familiar with Dan Blocker?
- 1:18:45I'm gonna bring that up.
- 1:18:46I just.
- 1:18:46The energy is so different because like Sterling hating comes.
- 1:18:50Yeah.
- 1:18:50Yeah.
- 1:18:51Right.
- 1:18:51This.
- 1:18:52Oh no.
- 1:18:52Yeah.
- 1:18:53Cuz Sterling Hayden comes across as a.
- 1:18:55As a wounded bear, as a big lie.
- 1:18:58Like he comes across as someone who.
- 1:19:00Because he is kind of like those are roles he played.
- 1:19:03Yeah.
- 1:19:03Like the big guys.
- 1:19:05So totally him.
- 1:19:06Yeah.
- 1:19:07So it's a great.
- 1:19:07But I.
- 1:19:08I'm.
- 1:19:08I'm.
- 1:19:09I mean I'm stuck wondering what would that have been fascinating.
- 1:19:13It would have recast it from like a Hemingway to like a.
- 1:19:16A Lewis Lamour kind Of.
- 1:19:18Because I can't imagine him doing anything but like kind of.
- 1:19:21Yeah, I don't.
- 1:19:21Old Cowboy.
- 1:19:22Which is also an interesting thought if I think about it.
- 1:19:25This is going way long and I'm very sorry to listening.
- 1:19:28I.
- 1:19:28I listened to an episode of.
- 1:19:29Of Blank Slate with.
- 1:19:31With Griffin David and Chris Gethard talking about Mandalorian Grogu that ran three hours today.
- 1:19:37So I'm in that headspace.
- 1:19:39Everyone, we're fine.
- 1:19:40Don't worry, we'll get you out in two.
- 1:19:41Yeah.
- 1:19:42That's my problem is from me to you, under two.
- 1:19:45The funniest thing about that episode is them.
- 1:19:47Them lamenting that all their guests are saying no.
- 1:19:49Yeah.
- 1:19:49I canceled all my plans tomorrow because I knew I was going to be on this show and I knew I'd need to recharge because every episode goes two or three hours.
- 1:19:58This is not one of those shows.
- 1:19:59I'm very sorry.
- 1:20:00But anyway, yeah, Dan Blocker would have been a fascinating because, yeah, it would have had to flip.
- 1:20:07And it's that man out of the Dime thing again where you would have had the Cowboy.
- 1:20:10Yeah.
- 1:20:11And the 40s private dick.
- 1:20:15Like the.
- 1:20:16You know what I mean?
- 1:20:17So it's that these archetypes.
- 1:20:19Archetypes of California that are kind of falling away for this, like, post Manson, 70s Laurel Canyon.
- 1:20:30So I don't know.
- 1:20:30I have a bit of trivia.
- 1:20:32So the screenwriter, Lee Brackett, very well known, had to.
- 1:20:37In the end of the novel, Marlo doesn't kill Terry.
- 1:20:42And once changed that, Altman insisted that the only way he would direct that if the ending didn't change, because that was what he thought was most interesting about that screenplay was that change.
- 1:20:54Was that what would cause Marlo to do that?
- 1:20:57Right.
- 1:20:58Because.
- 1:20:59And I mean, I can't see another.
- 1:21:02Because I know the movie.
- 1:21:02Right.
- 1:21:02It's hard for me to envision what it wouldn't be because then Marlo's the same, then it's the same Marlowe.
- 1:21:07From the beginning, when I think a change had to happen for the movie to have the impact it does.
- 1:21:14Yeah.
- 1:21:15Also, he just would.
- 1:21:16Terry Lennox.
- 1:21:18Yeah, Terry Lennox,.
- 1:21:22Dude.
- 1:21:22At no point I'm like, well, he was just a tough position, one that he put himself into.
- 1:21:25He beat his wife to death to the point where obviously it was terrifying.
- 1:21:30Right.
- 1:21:30And then.
- 1:21:30And then he just moved to another rich woman.
- 1:21:33Also was fine with his friend probably getting killed by Augustine.
- 1:21:36The only.
- 1:21:36Again, the only reason that money was ever going to be returned was to close the loop on him.
- 1:21:41So he was okay, fuck that dude, everybody, everybody.
- 1:21:46Fuck Terry Lennox.
- 1:21:47I want you to hear this.
- 1:21:48At night.
- 1:21:48I just want that energy to be out there also.
- 1:21:51Cool, cool movie nerd thing about Leigh Brackett.
- 1:21:54This was her second Marlowe film.
- 1:21:57Yeah.
- 1:21:58Was it the Big Sleep?
- 1:21:59She did the Big Sleep, yeah.
- 1:22:01So it's gonna be interesting to revolver.
- 1:22:03William Faulkner, you know.
- 1:22:06So what's.
- 1:22:06So that is super interesting because that goes back into Roger Wade's character because in many ways, he's a reflection of a lot of those classic writers who went to LA and then went to seed, just drank themselves to
- 1:22:17death because it was such a change from, hey, everybody, capitalism kills everything.
- 1:22:22I think is really the lesson here, because they were just crushed by the studio system.
- 1:22:27Yeah, yeah, 100%.
- 1:22:29And then her next movie after this.
- 1:22:31Do you remember what that was, Meg?
- 1:22:33Is it Star Wars?
- 1:22:35It is.
- 1:22:36It is.
- 1:22:37I'm pretty sure it strikes back.
- 1:22:39Yeah.
- 1:22:40She wrote, you're like, I.
- 1:22:42My feeling is telling me.
- 1:22:44Yeah, here's the thing.
- 1:22:44It's like, I know that.
- 1:22:45But I.
- 1:22:46I was like, it's such a wild thing that I'm like, am I right?
- 1:22:48Did I just lose my mind?
- 1:22:50Did I.
- 1:22:51Did I make a different reality?
- 1:22:52Was it Star Wars?
- 1:22:54She was an incredible pulp sci fi writer before she, like.
- 1:22:58Yeah.
- 1:22:58So she wrote this.
- 1:22:59She wrote Hatari, she wrote Rio Lobo.
- 1:23:02Real, like, amazing screenwriter, but also wrote all these, like, shitty p.
- 1:23:08I shouldn't say shitty, but, like, inexpensive and quickly put out stuff.
- 1:23:12So that's how you made a living.
- 1:23:13Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:23:14Yeah, exactly.
- 1:23:14The.
- 1:23:15The.
- 1:23:15Yeah, the.
- 1:23:16The.
- 1:23:16You know, I'll tell you what else had root.
- 1:23:18Yeah.
- 1:23:18I'll tell you this.
- 1:23:19Like, instead of trying to write big old American novels and then get crushed by the system, what you do is you move fast and you're flexible.
- 1:23:25Lee Brackey.
- 1:23:26Do that.
- 1:23:27Like, no, you just change.
- 1:23:28Do what you have to do and don't base yourself on this ideal.
- 1:23:32Right.
- 1:23:33Lee Brackett, Harlan Ellison, L.
- 1:23:35Ron Hubbard,.
- 1:23:36All three of them typing that shit.
- 1:23:37Really found a way to get out of the Hollywood system in different ways, successful in different.
- 1:23:46You never want to say, I have to give it to L.
- 1:23:48Ron Hubbard.
- 1:23:49But he sure knew that, like, religion was going to be easier and much more lucrative.
- 1:23:53God damn it.
- 1:23:54If you're going to do it.
- 1:23:55Yeah.
- 1:23:55If you're going to do it.
- 1:23:56You know what?
- 1:23:56We should probably be thankful that Harlan didn't have that thought, though.
- 1:24:00Parmi wants to see his religion.
- 1:24:02What would it have been?
- 1:24:03Holy shit, I would love to know.
- 1:24:05I've.
- 1:24:06I've only heard Secondhand stories.
- 1:24:08I don't know if we've talked about this on air, but McKenneth told me stories about his dad was friends with Harlan Ellison.
- 1:24:14So Uncle Harlan would call the house every now and again.
- 1:24:18I can't imagine.
- 1:24:19That's a lot of energy coming at you.
- 1:24:21Yeah.
- 1:24:22Once we get the Blue family on, we'll have to talk about that with the.
- 1:24:25Oh, yeah, you're right.
- 1:24:27Save that for.
- 1:24:28Yeah.
- 1:24:31What a fascinating family there.
- 1:24:33But, yeah, that is.
- 1:24:34Long goodbye.
- 1:24:35Do we have anything else to say about the long by.
- 1:24:36I feel like this has been a long goodbye this last half hour, talking about this.
- 1:24:39You know what?
- 1:24:40There's a.
- 1:24:40There's a lot to say.
- 1:24:41I'm so.
- 1:24:41I'm so glad y' all let me talk about this, because I'm the one who put this on the.
- 1:24:45Because I was like, yeah, it just.
- 1:24:47It's almost two hours and I don't feel like it.
- 1:24:49Because you're just.
- 1:24:50No.
- 1:24:50Drifting along with it.
- 1:24:52It's.
- 1:24:52It's.
- 1:24:53Yeah, somebody mentioned it.
- 1:24:54It's like a hangout movie.
- 1:24:55It's an LA hangout movie.
- 1:24:57And, yeah.
- 1:24:57100.
- 1:24:58That.
- 1:24:58It's got it.
- 1:24:59It's.
- 1:25:00You can see its fingerprints on what?
- 1:25:01Anderson, Tarantino, all like.
- 1:25:05It is decades of influence, even though it didn't do well when it first came out.
- 1:25:09It's one of those films that people reassess and go, oh, actually, that was good.
- 1:25:14Yeah.
- 1:25:14The first time I saw him with, like, the.
- 1:25:16With the jacket and the cigarette, I was like, that's spikes from Cowboy Bebop.
- 1:25:21100.
- 1:25:22Oh, 100.
- 1:25:25Yeah.
- 1:25:25Oh, God.
- 1:25:26No doubt.
- 1:25:26Oh, God.
- 1:25:27And just, like, going through.
- 1:25:28Oh, just the world beating them.
- 1:25:30Oh, my God.
- 1:25:31Yeah.
- 1:25:32Oh.
- 1:25:32Oh.
- 1:25:33Oh, my God.
- 1:25:33Imagine Philip Marlowe doing.
- 1:25:35I know that, man.
- 1:25:35I'm going backwards in time.
- 1:25:38If he was on a.
- 1:25:39Oh, my God, it is Marvel.
- 1:25:41Okay.
- 1:25:42Okay.
- 1:25:42Oh, my God.
- 1:25:42What a call.
- 1:25:43I love it.
- 1:25:43I love it.
- 1:25:44So this film, if you have not seen it yet, run, don't walk.
- 1:25:48It's on Tubi.
- 1:25:48There's no reason to watch it.
- 1:25:49Not watch it because it's for free, like, or get it from your library.
- 1:25:53I saw it on Pluto and there was no ads.
- 1:25:56What?
- 1:25:56Oh, I wish I would have known.
- 1:25:58Yeah.
- 1:25:58Because check it out.
- 1:25:59On Pluto, if there's no ads.
- 1:26:00Yeah.
- 1:26:00This needs no ads.
- 1:26:01So, yeah,.
- 1:26:04The version of Pluto looks like it has spots where there would be ads, but there are not.
- 1:26:11Oh, I envy you, because I watched it on Tubi and, yeah, I had to see Febreze ads halfway through it.
- 1:26:16It kind of.
- 1:26:17I'm not gonna say it didn't impact my experience.
- 1:26:20Well, it takes you out a little bit.
- 1:26:21A little bit.
- 1:26:22Yeah.
- 1:26:23Yeah.
- 1:26:24Thanks, everybody.
- 1:26:26Thank you for listening.
- 1:26:27We're gonna go out on a limb here and say Robert Altman, pretty good filmmaker.
- 1:26:30Yeah, he's okay.
- 1:26:31Elliott Gould, pretty decent.
- 1:26:33Yeah, he's all right.
- 1:26:34Yeah.
- 1:26:35Highly, highly recommend on this.
- 1:26:36I, I, we should probably do more Altman at some point.
- 1:26:38Maybe we'll do pop.
- 1:26:40Oh, my God.
- 1:26:41We should.
- 1:26:42I mean, honestly and truly.
- 1:26:44Yes.
- 1:26:45Kp, have you seen Popeye?
- 1:26:47Long time ago.
- 1:26:48Okay.
- 1:26:48But yeah, so it's a fever dream.
- 1:26:52My God.
- 1:26:54The amount of cocaine, allegedly.
- 1:26:57Not allegedly.
- 1:26:59Spinach.
- 1:27:00Pretty, pretty.
- 1:27:01Pretty well documented at this point, I feel.
- 1:27:03Oh, boy.
- 1:27:04So, yeah, this has been Anomaly Presents.
