- 0:07Speaker 1: The season with Peter Schreger as a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. Welcome everybody to have a
- 0:23Speaker 1: season with Peter Schreger. I have Peter Schreger. It is
- 0:26Speaker 1: Super Bowl Week. I am jumping out of my seat excited.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I can't tell. It is wall to wall super Bowl everywhere.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And as you're listening to this, this is posting on Tuesday.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I am en route to Arizona, where I'll be doing
- 0:42Speaker 1: Good Morning Football from the lovely state of Arizona Wednesday morning,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Thursday morning, Friday morning, and then I'm going to be
- 0:51Speaker 1: on the Fox pregame for the Super Bowl all day
- 0:55Speaker 1: Sunday and what sounds like a pretty significant role. I
- 0:58Speaker 1: was a little surprised, but my bosses have enough faith
- 1:00Speaker 1: in me to say, hey, you're gonna be a big
- 1:02Speaker 1: part of the pregame. I'm like, awesome. So I will
- 1:05Speaker 1: be trying to gather as much information as possible and
- 1:08Speaker 1: also trying to bring as much insight that maybe no
- 1:11Speaker 1: one else has leading up to the game all day Sunday.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You know, my initial look at this game is that
- 1:19Speaker 1: we have the two number one seeds. We have two
- 1:21Speaker 1: teams that have been just locomotives over the past few weeks,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and we have two really young, promising and I would say,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like awesome ambassadors of the sport at quarterback. Yet, as
- 1:36Speaker 1: I always do, I want to look at the business
- 1:38Speaker 1: of how these two teams operate and how they got here.
- 1:41Speaker 1: And I look at what the Eagles and Chiefs have
- 1:43Speaker 1: done in the past twelve months to go from teams
- 1:45Speaker 1: that didn't make the Super Bowl to teams that did.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Let's start with Philly embarrassing loss in the wild card
- 1:51Speaker 1: round to Tampa Bay. I still hear Merril Reese, the
- 1:53Speaker 1: radio announcer, being like this Gammer's finally over. That's what
- 1:56Speaker 1: he said to end the radio call, which was a
- 1:59Speaker 1: blowout to the Buccaneers. And you know, they could have
- 2:03Speaker 1: sit on their hands and been like, all right, let's
- 2:05Speaker 1: see what we do in the tray aft and let's
- 2:06Speaker 1: see if we can get a couple free agents. They
- 2:08Speaker 1: could have aggressively pursued DeShawn Watson. A lot of people
- 2:12Speaker 1: thought last year that the Eagles were a real team
- 2:14Speaker 1: because of Howie Roseman's aggressive nature and you know Deshaun
- 2:18Speaker 1: watson skills as the player. They could have gone after
- 2:20Speaker 1: him and said, let's make a big splash. Instead, they
- 2:23Speaker 1: doubled down on building around Jalen Hurts, and I thought
- 2:28Speaker 1: that was cool. Let's look at what they've done free agency.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Hassan Reddick is on the block, guy who's a South
- 2:33Speaker 1: Jersey native who went to Temple nearby and who had
- 2:39Speaker 1: just an outstanding season last year for the Carolina Panthers
- 2:42Speaker 1: on a one year deal and before that had an
- 2:44Speaker 1: outstanding season for the Arizona Cardinals. They give him a
- 2:47Speaker 1: pretty economically sound offer and they add Hassan Reddick in
- 2:50Speaker 1: free agencies. So you add that piece. Then what do
- 2:52Speaker 1: they do in the draft? Well, they draft Jordan Davis,
- 2:54Speaker 1: which I think is a big piece of the future
- 2:56Speaker 1: at defensive line. But they have a second first round pick,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and we knew that wide receiver was an area of emphasis,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and yet five wide receivers had already been taken in
- 3:05Speaker 1: the first round. And they're at the eighteenth pick and
- 3:08Speaker 1: trailing Burks is on the board, and you could probably
- 3:11Speaker 1: grab one of these other guys. A Christian Watson was
- 3:14Speaker 1: still available, Sky Moore was still available. No, they trade
- 3:18Speaker 1: a the eighteenth overall pick and a third rounder and
- 3:21Speaker 1: they get a j Brown. I mean that is aggressive.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So so far, you add Hassan Reddick and aj Brown.
- 3:27Speaker 1: As the offseason continues, they add guys like James Bradberry,
- 3:31Speaker 1: They add guys like Chauncey Gardner Johnson. They add guys
- 3:35Speaker 1: that they think and play immediate roles and help this
- 3:38Speaker 1: team in big spots. I thought when Jordan Davis, the rookie,
- 3:42Speaker 1: went down, they didn't just sit on their hands. They
- 3:44Speaker 1: went out there and they went and acquired Robert Quinn,
- 3:47Speaker 1: who hasn't played a role. But the fact they went
- 3:49Speaker 1: out and got them from the Bears. I love. They
- 3:52Speaker 1: went and they lured you know, Lynn Vaal Joseph out
- 3:55Speaker 1: of his semi retirement to come join the team. They
- 3:57Speaker 1: did the same with Damien Sue. They add, they add,
- 4:00Speaker 1: they add their relentless and for that I give them credit.
- 4:03Speaker 1: A lot of teams don't have that approach. A lot
- 4:05Speaker 1: of teams would say, hey, look, we draft really well,
- 4:09Speaker 1: we're sound, We've got this great offensive and defensive line.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Let's just go to war with what we got. No,
- 4:15Speaker 1: Howie Roseman and that front office would not sleep until
- 4:19Speaker 1: they felt like they had a Super Bowl ready roster.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And guess what twelve months after losing to the Buccaneers
- 4:25Speaker 1: and embarrassing fashion. The Eagles not only are in the
- 4:28Speaker 1: Super Bowl, they're the number one team. They've got what
- 4:30Speaker 1: appears to be the number one offensive and defensive line
- 4:33Speaker 1: in the sport. And Jalen Hurtz is on the cusp
- 4:35Speaker 1: of superstardom. And that's because of not only his hard
- 4:38Speaker 1: work and all things that he's put into this thing,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but because of what they've done to surround him with
- 4:42Speaker 1: the right pieces. That's the Eagles. The Chiefs. Chiefs had
- 4:45Speaker 1: a whole different philosophy. Chiefs, how about this stat Chiefs
- 4:50Speaker 1: went to the AFC Championship Game last year, twenty one
- 4:54Speaker 1: of the fifty three players on the roster are different
- 4:57Speaker 1: this year. That's forty percent of their roster is different
- 5:00Speaker 1: than what they've trotted out for the AFC Championship Game
- 5:03Speaker 1: last year. The biggest move, of course, was trading tie Rekill.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And let me tell you something knowing that organization and
- 5:10Speaker 1: I reported it when it happened. This was not a
- 5:12Speaker 1: unilateral decision by Brett Veach. This was a conversation that
- 5:16Speaker 1: involved Patrick Mahomes, It involved Andy Reid, involved Clark Hunt.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Do we pay Tyreek Hill thirty million dollars and deal
- 5:24Speaker 1: with what we have to deal with on the roster,
- 5:26Speaker 1: or do we trade Tyreek Hill, get picks and then
- 5:29Speaker 1: have some free space to maybe pick up some other
- 5:31Speaker 1: players that can help us do the job. Well, Tyreek
- 5:34Speaker 1: Hill's probably the greatest Chiefs wide receiver to ever live.
- 5:37Speaker 1: They trade him and he made thirty million dollars this
- 5:40Speaker 1: year for the Miami Dolphins, and he was outstanding. He's
- 5:42Speaker 1: in finalist for Offensive Player of the Year. Tyreek Hill
- 5:44Speaker 1: is amazing. I think Tyree Hills a Hall of Famer.
- 5:46Speaker 1: That's a whole of the argument. But I think he's
- 5:47Speaker 1: a Hall of Famer already. But they paid thirty million
- 5:52Speaker 1: dollars to Dolphins for Tyree Hill this season, The entire
- 5:55Speaker 1: Chiefs wide receivers room, all those guys, twelve guys combined,
- 5:58Speaker 1: make fifteen million dollars total. So what did they do well?
- 6:02Speaker 1: They signed Juju to a short term deal. They signed
- 6:05Speaker 1: Marquez veld a scant link to a short time deal.
- 6:08Speaker 1: They went out and they got Justin Watson, who was
- 6:10Speaker 1: an outstanding practice player for the Tambay Buccaneers and who
- 6:13Speaker 1: came in training camp and blew everybody away for the Chiefs.
- 6:16Speaker 1: This year, they drafted sky Moore. They found resources with
- 6:21Speaker 1: the Tyreek deal, and they spent them where they thought
- 6:24Speaker 1: was important. Tyrn Matthew was a captain on this team.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Maybe his best days were done. They were able to say, hey,
- 6:30Speaker 1: rip the band aid off, say farewell, and they bring
- 6:32Speaker 1: in Justin Reid who appears to be playing some of
- 6:34Speaker 1: the best football of his career at the safety spot.
- 6:38Speaker 1: They draft well, they make key plays, and they also
- 6:41Speaker 1: made key free agent acquisitions. I thought bringing in a
- 6:44Speaker 1: guy like Carlos Dunlap, a veteran guy to add to
- 6:47Speaker 1: the defensive line. Smart sound. This offensive line that they'll
- 6:51Speaker 1: be trotting out, it's completely different than the one that
- 6:54Speaker 1: you lost saw in a Super Bowl when they played
- 6:55Speaker 1: the Buccaneers. Completely different, top to bottom, all new guys.
- 6:59Speaker 1: That is what Brett Beach does. He has not had
- 7:02Speaker 1: to endure the rebuild. He has not had to endure
- 7:05Speaker 1: the pain that the other teams have. When you pay
- 7:07Speaker 1: the quarterback that huge salary, it's because they draft well,
- 7:10Speaker 1: it's because they unload salaries and try to bring on
- 7:13Speaker 1: others that might make more sense. And it's because they
- 7:15Speaker 1: do the same thing that the Eagles have done for
- 7:17Speaker 1: jam and Hurts. They've surrounded Patrick Mahomes. I am a
- 7:20Speaker 1: geek for this stuff. I love roster building. I think
- 7:23Speaker 1: what the Chiefs and the Eagles have done are two
- 7:25Speaker 1: very separate paths to being in the Super Bowl. But
- 7:28Speaker 1: both of these rosters are among the best in the league,
- 7:31Speaker 1: and they've rebuilt teams on the fly. Chiefs lost the
- 7:34Speaker 1: Super Bowl two years ago. Their team right now, aside
- 7:36Speaker 1: from a few players, looks completely different than the one
- 7:38Speaker 1: that played in that Super Bowl. The Eagles won a
- 7:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl a few years ago. They've only got seven
- 7:43Speaker 1: guys from that team on this team, and of course
- 7:46Speaker 1: four of them are key contributors. Fletcher Cox and Brandon
- 7:49Speaker 1: Graham on defense, and then Jason Kelsey and of course
- 7:52Speaker 1: Lane Johnson on offense. You've got that core four. They
- 7:55Speaker 1: were the lead dogs in that Super Bowl run. They're
- 7:58Speaker 1: still all coming back, and of course you've got all
- 8:00Speaker 1: these new players, and then you've got a couple of
- 8:01Speaker 1: the other holdovers that were there on that team. I
- 8:04Speaker 1: love both of these rosters. I think these gms are fearless,
- 8:08Speaker 1: smart and decisive, and it's a testament to be aggressive.
- 8:13Speaker 1: But also think about things a year down the line,
- 8:16Speaker 1: two years down the line. You don't bring back Tyreek
- 8:19Speaker 1: Hill unless you feel like there's a future plan and
- 8:22Speaker 1: a greater future and a greater runway if you can
- 8:24Speaker 1: trade them and get all the picks and all the
- 8:27Speaker 1: money that they got in exchange for that Tyreek deal.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Eagles versus Chiefs, I'm here for it. I love both teams.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I am flying out as you're listening to this. I
- 8:36Speaker 1: will be on the ground soon and let me give
- 8:39Speaker 1: you a quick rundown of what I've got planned, because
- 8:42Speaker 1: I think this is kind of the other part of
- 8:43Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. You've got obviously the game and then
- 8:46Speaker 1: the work. But here are some of the things that
- 8:48Speaker 1: I'm excited for. Wednesday night, Fox is having a big
- 8:53Speaker 1: pre super Bowl dinner and at all the other ones
- 8:56Speaker 1: I've been too for Fox. I've been with Fox twenty
- 8:58Speaker 1: years and fifteen years, and you know, every three years
- 9:01Speaker 1: there's a Super Bowl. Jimmy Johnson gives like this riveting speech.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I cannot wait for it. I like, I'm giddy for it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Jimmy gives a speech to the entire production crew, like
- 9:10Speaker 1: camera guy up on the top, you know, left of
- 9:12Speaker 1: the stadium, bring your a game, and you know this
- 9:15Speaker 1: game right now? You know what's it gonna mean to you?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Greg Olsen, like you know, it's a fired up speech,
- 9:19Speaker 1: So Jimmy, you'll bring that other part of it. As
- 9:22Speaker 1: of right now, I don't know if I'm breaking news.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I don't want to steal any shine from the sports
- 9:26Speaker 1: media reporters out there, But sounds like Sean Payton's with
- 9:28Speaker 1: us all week. So Sean's the new coach of the Broncos.
- 9:32Speaker 1: We've had a great year with him. I'll have plenty
- 9:34Speaker 1: of stories from being alongside him riding shotgun on the
- 9:37Speaker 1: pregame show, which I love. That'll be Wednesday night. Colin
- 9:41Speaker 1: Coward invited me to a party. I don't know what
- 9:43Speaker 1: that consists of, but Coward is one of my favorite
- 9:46Speaker 1: guys in sports media, and I will be there. Colin
- 9:49Speaker 1: Coward's having a party, I will be there. I want
- 9:51Speaker 1: to see what Collins party's like and who he's hanging with.
- 9:55Speaker 1: That's Wednesday, Thursday night NFL Honors. Also, I'm gonna try
- 9:59Speaker 1: to double dip on this one. Howie Long is winning
- 10:02Speaker 1: a very coveted award and he's been really good to me.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Over the course of my career. The Pats I'm a
- 10:06Speaker 1: Roll Foundation is awarding Howe Long this year. I'm gonna
- 10:08Speaker 1: try to make it to that. That's going to be special,
- 10:11Speaker 1: So that'll also be Thursday night. I'm gonna try to
- 10:13Speaker 1: double dip on that, hopefully have some stories from that event.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Friday's an interesting one. So Friday is like your big
- 10:18Speaker 1: party night and everyone's going out and who's party going to?
- 10:20Speaker 1: Who's party going what are you gonna do that? I
- 10:22Speaker 1: don't know yet. I haven't been invited to any. We'll see, um,
- 10:24Speaker 1: hopefully I get invited to one, or to be honest,
- 10:27Speaker 1: probably sounds like a night where hey, do you want
- 10:30Speaker 1: to get dinner and then see where it goes? Um?
- 10:32Speaker 1: But yeah, I will not be necessarily on TMZ Friday night.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Not really my scene as far as that goes. But
- 10:38Speaker 1: if you do see a photo of me with Drake
- 10:40Speaker 1: Um on a DJ booth and on a DJ booth,
- 10:44Speaker 1: is that what they call it? Aaron on a DJ booth?
- 10:46Speaker 1: I don't know. In a DJ booth what do we
- 10:47Speaker 1: even call it? I'm more of a in It depends
- 10:51Speaker 1: how crazy you're getting. You could be on top having
- 10:54Speaker 1: a really big night. You could be on the djoth,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but generally I think you're at the booth. I could
- 10:59Speaker 1: be at the booth. Okay, last year, no joke. My
- 11:02Speaker 1: wife came with me and we went to the Justin
- 11:05Speaker 1: Bieber concert and we went to Biber and it was
- 11:10Speaker 1: awesome and I hung with George Kittle and Josh Allen
- 11:14Speaker 1: and uh luminout, Tony Gonzalez. Jeff Bezos was there. Is
- 11:18Speaker 1: it Bezos or Bezos? What do you call him? It's Bezos,
- 11:20Speaker 1: isn't it? I think I think I think it's I
- 11:23Speaker 1: think I go with Bezos. Let's go with bezas Jeff Bezos.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It does. But nothing sinister about him popping his head
- 11:31Speaker 1: the Biber, I'll tell you. Um. So we're there, and
- 11:33Speaker 1: then the party like is winding down a little bit,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and someone's like, oh, Marshmallow's going on next, and I'm like,
- 11:38Speaker 1: party's winding down. We're staying Marshmallow on the one. Two's
- 11:42Speaker 1: I love Marshmallow. All In was out late that night,
- 11:45Speaker 1: and then Saturday was recovering. But this year's Saturday, we
- 11:49Speaker 1: have a full rehearsal for Fox, and then Sunday is
- 11:51Speaker 1: a super Bowl. Um, it's busy, it's action packed. I'm
- 11:54Speaker 1: very fortunate to go to another super Bowl. I know,
- 11:57Speaker 1: Aaron you will be out there. Jason English, who's in
- 11:59Speaker 1: the house, is gonna be there. I hope to link
- 12:01Speaker 1: up with you guys. But let me tell you, by
- 12:03Speaker 1: the time that that that super Bowl actually arrives, it's
- 12:06Speaker 1: almost like an afterthought for everybody else because there's so
- 12:08Speaker 1: many other events going on. And one of the events
- 12:11Speaker 1: is going to be Thursday night, the NFL Honors. I'll
- 12:15Speaker 1: tell you what, I love this event. I think it's cool.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You get all the players and the coaches and the owners,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and they all get dolled up, and there's a red
- 12:23Speaker 1: carpet and they're being interviewed by Kevin Frasier, like it's
- 12:26Speaker 1: entertainment tonight, and you've got Papa Razzi, you know, Alvin Camaro,
- 12:30Speaker 1: what are you wearing tonight? Then the show starts and
- 12:32Speaker 1: it's a really fun show. I love it so much
- 12:35Speaker 1: that I said for our guests this week, like to
- 12:38Speaker 1: start this thing off, let's go behind the scenes, Like
- 12:41Speaker 1: what does it take to put together the NFL Owners?
- 12:44Speaker 1: What does it take to put together the big show
- 12:46Speaker 1: of the week. I feel like outside of the Super Bowl.
- 12:48Speaker 1: This is the biggest event for everyone at home, and
- 12:51Speaker 1: it's where you find out who wins the MVP, the
- 12:53Speaker 1: Walter Payton Man of the Year, the Rookie of the
- 12:55Speaker 1: Year's award, the Coach of the Year, and like, it's
- 12:58Speaker 1: a celebration of football. It's Thursday night, it's on NBC
- 13:03Speaker 1: and the executive producer it's a gentleman named Dave Amberlain.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I thought it would be fun. Let's go a little
- 13:08Speaker 1: behind the scenes. What's Dave Chamberlain's week, Like, let's get
- 13:11Speaker 1: him on the podcast, Dave Chamberlain after this. One of
- 13:27Speaker 1: my favorite nights of the year is the NFL Honors event.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I've been lucky enough to go probably the last ten
- 13:33Speaker 1: of them. It's it's cool. It's the Academy Awards for football.
- 13:37Speaker 1: It's the only place you can see your favorite players,
- 13:40Speaker 1: coaches and media personalities mixing with celebrities, and there's an
- 13:45Speaker 1: award show, and there's also comedy and there's it's just tremendous.
- 13:48Speaker 1: And now that we've got this podcast up and running,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I was listening to a different podcast. It's called The
- 13:54Speaker 1: Town and it's with a gentleman named Matthew Bellni for
- 13:57Speaker 1: a company called Puck and on his podcast, he had
- 14:00Speaker 1: the executive producer who was putting on the Grammys a
- 14:04Speaker 1: couple of days ahead of the Grammys and was going
- 14:06Speaker 1: going into what to take put them the show on?
- 14:08Speaker 1: Is this show going to be a hit? And it
- 14:10Speaker 1: was kind of got me excited for the event as
- 14:12Speaker 1: a hole, And I said, I'm going to steal that
- 14:14Speaker 1: exact idea, and I'm going to get one of the
- 14:17Speaker 1: men who puts on the NFL Honors event, and we're
- 14:19Speaker 1: gonna go deep dive into what it takes putting on
- 14:22Speaker 1: an award show and colliding all these wonderful worlds. And
- 14:25Speaker 1: with that, I bring on one of the men who's
- 14:27Speaker 1: gonna be putting on the NFL Honors Dave Chamberlain. Dave,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Welcome to the season with Peter Schreker. Thanks so much,
- 14:34Speaker 1: Really appreciate you having me on Psyche for NFL Honors. Dave.
- 14:38Speaker 1: You lead, Yeah, you lead a team that does not
- 14:42Speaker 1: just NFL Honors. You guys have done things like the SPS,
- 14:46Speaker 1: You've done the Oscars Red Carpet Show, You've done thirty
- 14:50Speaker 1: for thirty. When you got the call for NFL Honors,
- 14:54Speaker 1: what year was it and what kind of opportunity did
- 14:56Speaker 1: you see that being in the car? Sure, So I
- 14:59Speaker 1: got involved with NFL Honors from the beginning. I worked
- 15:03Speaker 1: with a woman named Moriamt for many years, who goes
- 15:06Speaker 1: way back with you know a lot of the folks
- 15:08Speaker 1: that were at the NFL that had been at the
- 15:11Speaker 1: ESPN around when the SPS, you know, we're coming up.
- 15:14Speaker 1: So they called up Moura to produce that show back
- 15:18Speaker 1: in I think it was twenty eleven, twenty twelve, and
- 15:20Speaker 1: I was working closely with her. So I've been involved
- 15:23Speaker 1: from the beginning, and you know, it was such a
- 15:25Speaker 1: when we got that call. It's such a great idea,
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know, and such an interesting fun thing to jump into. Um,
- 15:32Speaker 1: you know, that first year, I think the show was
- 15:34Speaker 1: in February. We got to call in October, so we
- 15:36Speaker 1: didn't have a lot of time to put it together.
- 15:38Speaker 1: But it's it's really been fun to see what it's
- 15:41Speaker 1: grown into over the years. You know. I went back
- 15:43Speaker 1: and I watched, you know, Alec Baldwin was the host,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and I'm watching and like I was curious, I'm like,
- 15:47Speaker 1: what was the vibe? As I'm doing research on this
- 15:49Speaker 1: thing and there's this really cool moment where like Jim
- 15:52Speaker 1: Harball wins Coach of the Year and Alex Smith goes
- 15:55Speaker 1: up and accepts it and he's taken it from Chris Evans,
- 15:57Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is almost like a time to it.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You could see like what was going on in the
- 16:01Speaker 1: world when this happened. And I feel like, now that
- 16:05Speaker 1: we're eleven years to this, you could probably have a
- 16:08Speaker 1: separate story for each one of these award shows in
- 16:10Speaker 1: the making of it, and of course where you were
- 16:12Speaker 1: in that moment in time. Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I think we have one of the kids from Twilight
- 16:16Speaker 1: present on that show, and it does like Tim Tebow
- 16:19Speaker 1: was a big story in the NFL at the time. Yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: it totally takes you back to that moment. How do
- 16:26Speaker 1: you pick the host because that was Baldwin We've had
- 16:28Speaker 1: of course, Steve Harvey has done multiple years. Last year,
- 16:33Speaker 1: Keegan Michael Key. I want to say Rob Riggles done
- 16:35Speaker 1: it in the past, cone in one year this year,
- 16:38Speaker 1: Kelly Clarkson. What goes into the selection of the NFL owners. Sure, So, look,
- 16:43Speaker 1: we always want somebody that's going to be entertaining, right
- 16:46Speaker 1: and that the people in the room, you know, the players, owners,
- 16:50Speaker 1: the NFL family, it's in the room, is going to
- 16:52Speaker 1: respond to and be excited for. But and you know,
- 16:56Speaker 1: I think what goes into that is somebody that's a
- 16:58Speaker 1: genuine fan, you know, somebody that really loves the game
- 17:02Speaker 1: and has a lot of respect for it and can
- 17:06Speaker 1: talk about things and kind of rid people and make
- 17:09Speaker 1: fun of things from that fan perspective. So, you know,
- 17:12Speaker 1: we don't want to just go out and get anybody
- 17:14Speaker 1: somebody that's like a real football fan that's also an
- 17:17Speaker 1: incredible entertainer. Yeah, so Clarkson gets the call win, how
- 17:20Speaker 1: does that all go down? And when do you guys
- 17:22Speaker 1: start putting those cards on the sure? So, yeah, we
- 17:24Speaker 1: went to Kelly late last year, you know, I probably
- 17:28Speaker 1: around November something like that. And because she's been a
- 17:31Speaker 1: presenter in years, I know that. Yeah, she's she's done
- 17:34Speaker 1: the show a couple of times, which is part of
- 17:36Speaker 1: what you know, identified her as somebody in our mind
- 17:38Speaker 1: that would be great. She's obviously hosts a talk show
- 17:40Speaker 1: every day. She's I think one of the most personable
- 17:43Speaker 1: and charming talents out there, and she can do so
- 17:46Speaker 1: many things. Well, so, yeah, we had her on the
- 17:48Speaker 1: show last year. I got to talk to her a
- 17:49Speaker 1: little bit and we thought she you know, we thought
- 17:52Speaker 1: she'd be a lot of fun. She's also one of
- 17:54Speaker 1: the busiest people in show business, so when we first
- 17:56Speaker 1: started talking to her, you know, it's uh navigating her
- 18:01Speaker 1: being able to do this around her schedule was a
- 18:03Speaker 1: little tricky. But you know, luckily, after going through a
- 18:07Speaker 1: few different things and trying to make it as as
- 18:11Speaker 1: simple for her as we could, you know, she agreed
- 18:14Speaker 1: to do it, which we were thrilled about. You know,
- 18:15Speaker 1: it's funny because this super Bowl site kind of dictates
- 18:18Speaker 1: where this thing is going to be, So I would
- 18:20Speaker 1: imagine a super Bowl in Minnesota in the freezing cold.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Is harder to get commitments from certain celebrities, and maybe
- 18:28Speaker 1: one that might be in Vegas next year, or one
- 18:30Speaker 1: that was in Los Angeles last year, Arizona, it's gonna
- 18:34Speaker 1: start a little earlier than it does when it's in
- 18:36Speaker 1: Atlanta or some other places. How hard was it to
- 18:38Speaker 1: get the celebrity presenters on board or is this something
- 18:41Speaker 1: that they line up to do. You know, it's a
- 18:43Speaker 1: great question, and to be honest with you, when you
- 18:45Speaker 1: know the show was on Saturday for many years, and
- 18:47Speaker 1: last year we shifted to Thursday, you know, which I
- 18:50Speaker 1: think is great. It gives us a little bit of
- 18:52Speaker 1: a separation from the super Bowl, so you know, hopefully
- 18:55Speaker 1: a little more chatter around around our show. But I
- 18:59Speaker 1: was I was a little concerned about getting celebrities to
- 19:02Speaker 1: Arizona on a Thursday night. But it's worked out great.
- 19:06Speaker 1: We've got an incredible list of celebs that are coming,
- 19:09Speaker 1: you know, coming in early and enjoying all the super
- 19:11Speaker 1: Bowl festivities in Arizona. And you know, all the players
- 19:14Speaker 1: seem to be coming out early. So it's it was
- 19:17Speaker 1: proved to be less of a challenge than I expected
- 19:19Speaker 1: it to be. No, it's good. And you know, you
- 19:21Speaker 1: talk to some of these agents and some of these
- 19:23Speaker 1: sales and marketing guys, Hey get us there on Thursday.
- 19:26Speaker 1: We'll make up Friday and Saturday. We'll make sure we
- 19:28Speaker 1: make the most of our money, and we'll make sure
- 19:30Speaker 1: both of your time like while you're there. And that's
- 19:32Speaker 1: what it's good. They've got, they've got an ad of
- 19:34Speaker 1: incentive to come. I can only imagine last year when
- 19:39Speaker 1: you get the call or you get the results that
- 19:41Speaker 1: Andrew Whitworth is Walter Payton Man of the Year and
- 19:44Speaker 1: it's in Los Angeles and his team is in the
- 19:47Speaker 1: Super Bowl. That was the biggest shock to me that
- 19:49Speaker 1: you actually got him and Cooper Cup in person. How
- 19:52Speaker 1: did that go down? And what kind of stuff do
- 19:54Speaker 1: you have with like the history of just like close
- 19:56Speaker 1: calls and like the amazing way that this thing could
- 19:58Speaker 1: come together. Yeah, you know, um, that was really interesting. Um,
- 20:03Speaker 1: you know, when we found out that Andrew was winning
- 20:06Speaker 1: in and then you know found out obviously the Rams
- 20:08Speaker 1: were gonna be in the game. We'd never had in
- 20:11Speaker 1: the history of the show anybody from either of the
- 20:13Speaker 1: Super Bowl teams come to the show. Obviously when it
- 20:15Speaker 1: was on Saturday, that's a lot trickier, you know. Um,
- 20:18Speaker 1: the one big benefit of the show moving to Thursday was,
- 20:21Speaker 1: you know, depending on the team, you know, different teams,
- 20:24Speaker 1: different coaches look at this in different ways, but you know,
- 20:28Speaker 1: there's a little bit more of an opportunity to try
- 20:30Speaker 1: to get those players to come to the show. The Rams,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you know, I think, really bought in and were excited.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And look, we also didn't want to We didn't want
- 20:41Speaker 1: either Cooper or Andrew to know that they were winning,
- 20:45Speaker 1: right that's um, yeah, you got to keep that close
- 20:47Speaker 1: to the vest. Yeah for sure, and not only for them,
- 20:50Speaker 1: but for everybody else that's nominated. But the Rams were
- 20:54Speaker 1: really incredibly to work with on that front. And you know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: I think Man of the Years obviously probably the you know,
- 21:01Speaker 1: most important award in the NFL. So knowing that was
- 21:05Speaker 1: on the table there, I think really meant a lot
- 21:08Speaker 1: to the Rams, um. And they were an incredible partner
- 21:11Speaker 1: in getting those guys. You know, we tried to make
- 21:14Speaker 1: it as easy and seamless as we could getting them
- 21:17Speaker 1: in and out. Um. And you know, uh, Andrew kind
- 21:20Speaker 1: of popped in backstage and walked out on stage, made
- 21:23Speaker 1: an incredible speech. Um, and then you know headed out
- 21:27Speaker 1: back to back to Yeah. But a lot of things
- 21:31Speaker 1: converging there right Like, um, it was their home stadium,
- 21:35Speaker 1: so you know that makes things all a little bit easier. Um.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Uh in LA you know so Um. But yeah, we've
- 21:43Speaker 1: you know, look, we've had obviously players winning that we're
- 21:46Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl in the past and have tried
- 21:47Speaker 1: to do different things. Um. But it's tricky, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 1: it's tricky the coach. This is not the coach's priority,
- 21:53Speaker 1: you know, No absolutely. Um, sports and comedy is really hard.
- 21:57Speaker 1: We've seen attempts fail. You know, whether it be a
- 22:01Speaker 1: TV show that this is gonna this is gonna be
- 22:03Speaker 1: the daily show for for sports and it never works,
- 22:06Speaker 1: or this is good, this funny gimmick on a pregame
- 22:08Speaker 1: show you're gonna love it rarely works. Yeah, you guys
- 22:11Speaker 1: have nailed it though these monologues over the years, whether
- 22:14Speaker 1: it be as Seth Myers, or whether it be a
- 22:16Speaker 1: cone in or whether it be Steve Harvey just roasting
- 22:19Speaker 1: the shit out of the NFL the past few years.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Last year I thought Gig and Michael Key was incredible.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It's really hard threading that needle. Um, and yet you
- 22:27Speaker 1: guys have been able to succeed with that. I feel
- 22:29Speaker 1: like there's one hundred percent universal approval rating from the
- 22:32Speaker 1: NFL Honors monologues. How have you guys been able to
- 22:35Speaker 1: nail that? And when does it get to the NFL
- 22:37Speaker 1: with what is going to be in the content of
- 22:39Speaker 1: those scripts because some of them are pretty close to
- 22:42Speaker 1: the edge. Those are those are my favorite meetings every year.
- 22:47Speaker 1: So you know, look, it starts with the host, right,
- 22:49Speaker 1: Like I said, having a host that's a genuine fan
- 22:53Speaker 1: that you know it can really speak to these things
- 22:56Speaker 1: from a level of from a place of passion, I
- 22:58Speaker 1: think really helps. We have an amazing writing staff led
- 23:01Speaker 1: by Bennett Webber. He's a huge football fan, as are
- 23:06Speaker 1: all of our writers. Um. And you know, look it
- 23:09Speaker 1: helps only having to do it once a year, right.
- 23:10Speaker 1: I don't envy people that have to come up with
- 23:13Speaker 1: ways to make sports funny on a daily show or
- 23:15Speaker 1: on a weekly show. Um. So we've got a lot
- 23:17Speaker 1: of material to work with, um and some incredibly talented
- 23:20Speaker 1: people to pull those jokes off. Um. But uh, yeah,
- 23:25Speaker 1: we we generally get a script to the league a
- 23:28Speaker 1: couple of days ahead of time and everything. Or is
- 23:32Speaker 1: it like you leave a little bit of room here, Well, no,
- 23:35Speaker 1: we we usually we get them everything. We don't want
- 23:37Speaker 1: to We don't want anybody to have surprises, right because
- 23:40Speaker 1: we want to come back every year and do the show.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Um uh. And you you know how it goes. There
- 23:46Speaker 1: will generally be a few things in there that we
- 23:48Speaker 1: know they're gonna cut, so that maybe they don't cut
- 23:50Speaker 1: the things that are actually our favorites. Um uh. And yeah, frankly,
- 23:55Speaker 1: I've been surprised some years at what we've been able to,
- 23:58Speaker 1: uh to get through UM. And you know, it helps
- 24:02Speaker 1: that we've been doing it year after year with some
- 24:03Speaker 1: of the same people. And I think, you know, when
- 24:07Speaker 1: things come from a place of love and passion and
- 24:10Speaker 1: not of like sort of picking and attacking, UM, that
- 24:13Speaker 1: that helps helps us get those things approved. There's so
- 24:17Speaker 1: many sentimental moments. And we talked about to Walter Payton,
- 24:19Speaker 1: Man of the Year, and I always end up at
- 24:21Speaker 1: Bolleteers and I'm like, I didn't plan on crying tonight
- 24:23Speaker 1: at the NFL Howners, but I do. Uh, your favorite
- 24:26Speaker 1: funny moment in the eleven years of this show has
- 24:29Speaker 1: been a success, Like, what's the one moment where you're like,
- 24:31Speaker 1: oh shit, that that one sticks out? Oh boy, that's um,
- 24:34Speaker 1: that's great. We uh early on Alec Baldwin's favorite player
- 24:39Speaker 1: of all times, Joe NAMATHUM and I can't remember the
- 24:43Speaker 1: first show or the second show. We Alec did a
- 24:46Speaker 1: great bit in the audience, UM with Joe Namath Phil
- 24:50Speaker 1: Simms next to exactly that's exactly right. It's yeah, yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 1: I love this. I remember it telling where you know
- 24:56Speaker 1: it was about playing in New York and and and
- 24:59Speaker 1: playing in the spotlight and how you navigate that and
- 25:01Speaker 1: he was, you know, sitting next to Phil Simms, um,
- 25:04Speaker 1: who's very stayed U and uh, you know Phil's Phil
- 25:08Speaker 1: was kind of like, oh, you know, it's you go
- 25:11Speaker 1: home early and uh and do your job. And then
- 25:13Speaker 1: Nameth just kind of popped out. Uh. Um. And you
- 25:17Speaker 1: know he obviously navigated New York a little bit differently. Um.
- 25:21Speaker 1: That Uh, that was one of my favorites. Alec Baldwin,
- 25:23Speaker 1: if I recall Alec Baldwin asked them the question how
- 25:26Speaker 1: about you, Joe, and he goes, well, I don't remember it, yeah,
- 25:29Speaker 1: which is an amazing line. Yeah, that's that's It's great. Um.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I thought Steve Harvey was hilarious both years he did it,
- 25:37Speaker 1: And I felt like if there ever was a script
- 25:39Speaker 1: that went to the NFL that I don't know whatever
- 25:41Speaker 1: I heard on TV. That's a great point. That's a
- 25:45Speaker 1: great point. Look Steve, Um. You know, Steve hadn't done
- 25:49Speaker 1: stand up for a long time before he hosted that show.
- 25:51Speaker 1: He hadn't told jokes in front of in front of
- 25:53Speaker 1: an audience like that, and he was so excited to
- 25:56Speaker 1: do it. Um. We also had the benefit those years
- 25:59Speaker 1: the show wasn't live live, right, so we had maybe
- 26:03Speaker 1: an hour or two hours to trim things and edit things.
- 26:06Speaker 1: So you know, Steve just kind of went out and
- 26:07Speaker 1: let it rip, and we we knew there were things
- 26:11Speaker 1: that we were going to have to edit and cut
- 26:13Speaker 1: out ed. Uh, you know that worked. That worked pretty well.
- 26:17Speaker 1: And you know Steve also wasn't always going off teleproper.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Steve just you know, he had things he wanted to
- 26:22Speaker 1: do and say, and then he'd just go the great
- 26:25Speaker 1: The great thing about him too is you may remember
- 26:27Speaker 1: he you know, usually during a show, the host goes
- 26:31Speaker 1: out does their bits, and then in between they're you know,
- 26:34Speaker 1: prepping for the next thing, working with the writers on
- 26:36Speaker 1: a script, or you know, just taking a break, taking
- 26:39Speaker 1: a breather. You know, it's more exhausting to do this
- 26:41Speaker 1: than he might think. Steve, though, in commercial breaks would
- 26:44Speaker 1: go out and entertain the audience just because he had
- 26:46Speaker 1: fun doing it. Um. So he'd go out there and
- 26:48Speaker 1: chat with everybody during commercial breaks, um, just to have
- 26:51Speaker 1: some more fun. So good. And there's this whole backstage
- 26:54Speaker 1: scene that I was able to frequent once and it
- 26:57Speaker 1: was like if you could pick the most random celebrities
- 27:00Speaker 1: and most random football players, but it was like at all,
- 27:03Speaker 1: just just hanging out backstage. I'll never forget. I went
- 27:06Speaker 1: back stage and Paul Rud's back there and he calls
- 27:08Speaker 1: me over and he's like, Peter, do you know Klais Campbell?
- 27:11Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, I guess. And we were like
- 27:13Speaker 1: this like intense conversation, like Paul read Klais Campbell and me,
- 27:16Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is the show. Now, are you
- 27:18Speaker 1: in the truck or do you get a chance to
- 27:20Speaker 1: frequent that backstage? I'm backstage on backstage, so yeah. Usually
- 27:25Speaker 1: there's a lot of things happening around me and behind
- 27:27Speaker 1: sort of a setup with monitors, and I get headphones on,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but there's a lot happening around everyone, so I look around, like, oh,
- 27:34Speaker 1: there's Mark Wahlberg and Andrew Whitworth. I mean a conversation
- 27:37Speaker 1: about God knows what you know? Um, yeah, it's a
- 27:41Speaker 1: it's a fun it's a fun scene back there. You
- 27:54Speaker 1: mentioned the name Moura matt And for the listeners, she's
- 27:57Speaker 1: one of the all time legends in television sports TV
- 28:02Speaker 1: and she passed right before the pandemic. I wanted to
- 28:05Speaker 1: say in like February of twenty twenty. But she's the
- 28:09Speaker 1: touch point for any favor that Moura man ever needed
- 28:12Speaker 1: from Aaron Rodgers. He'd run to do it. Peyton Manning,
- 28:14Speaker 1: run to do it, Paul Rudd, run to do it,
- 28:17Speaker 1: you name it. Her legacy is all over the NFL honors.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Her footprint is there. Can you tell us a little
- 28:22Speaker 1: bit about who Maura was and really what this show
- 28:24Speaker 1: means to her legacy and how you guys are going
- 28:26Speaker 1: to keep it going. Absolutely? Yeah, she was incredible. Um,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you know, as you said, so many people. She could
- 28:34Speaker 1: get people to do things that nobody else could get
- 28:36Speaker 1: to do owners because people loved her so much and
- 28:39Speaker 1: loved her passion so much. Um, she was a force
- 28:42Speaker 1: of nature. When she wanted something to happen, she would
- 28:46Speaker 1: just go, go, go, go go. She'd get know so
- 28:49Speaker 1: many times and you know, just try to push through
- 28:51Speaker 1: it and flip a note to it. Yes, And she
- 28:54Speaker 1: always approached you know, uh these shows from a place
- 28:57Speaker 1: of telling stories and moving people and you know, trying
- 29:01Speaker 1: to make the world a better place through some of
- 29:03Speaker 1: the you know, silly shows that we make. And I
- 29:06Speaker 1: think she was largely successful in doing those things. And um,
- 29:10Speaker 1: you know, It's funny. I was just talking to somebody
- 29:12Speaker 1: this morning, like, I can't tell you how many times
- 29:14Speaker 1: a day doing this show, it goes through a mind, well,
- 29:17Speaker 1: what would More do? How would More handle this situation?
- 29:20Speaker 1: And you know, I can never I could never do
- 29:23Speaker 1: a lot of the things she was capable of doing.
- 29:25Speaker 1: But you know we, I think all of us have
- 29:29Speaker 1: that in our heads as we go through, you know,
- 29:31Speaker 1: the creative of the show and trying to decide what
- 29:34Speaker 1: we're going to do and how we're going to handle things,
- 29:35Speaker 1: and how we're going to navigate talent and just try
- 29:39Speaker 1: to do her justice. You know, she was such a
- 29:43Speaker 1: huge part of making this show to what it is. Yeah,
- 29:45Speaker 1: and it's the same she was. And obviously, you guys
- 29:48Speaker 1: work on the SP's for years. There's like this high
- 29:50Speaker 1: quality of not only the show itself, but the guests
- 29:55Speaker 1: that attend and are willing to participate and have fun
- 29:57Speaker 1: and laugh about themselves, which we don't see on a
- 30:00Speaker 1: day to day basis for a lot of these athletes
- 30:02Speaker 1: and performers. Yeah, absolutely, she was. She was so great
- 30:07Speaker 1: at getting people comfortable with doing things that you know,
- 30:10Speaker 1: they had no business doing. You know, we we think
- 30:13Speaker 1: of an idea and like, oh, that person's never going
- 30:16Speaker 1: to do that. She's like, give me, give me, give
- 30:19Speaker 1: me trying give me shot. And you know she was
- 30:21Speaker 1: almost always successful, really good, really good at doing Yeah,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I've had I had a chance to get to know
- 30:27Speaker 1: her briefly. I mean, just an incredible toward a force.
- 30:30Speaker 1: And you guys are carrying on the torch and you're
- 30:32Speaker 1: doing a fine job. What's the measure of success for
- 30:35Speaker 1: this year's NFL Honors? I know it's gonna be great
- 30:37Speaker 1: and everyone's gonna have a blast. But the next morning
- 30:39Speaker 1: you wake up Friday and you're like, what are we
- 30:42Speaker 1: looking at? Is it ratings? Is it the Twitter reaction
- 30:45Speaker 1: or is it just an overall high quality night where
- 30:47Speaker 1: everyone feels good about the NFL. You know, obviously pay
- 30:51Speaker 1: attention to the ratings, and I hope as many people
- 30:53Speaker 1: watch the show as we can, and you know, hopefully
- 30:57Speaker 1: if if the ratings are good, you know that that's
- 31:02Speaker 1: good for us. But you know, I think the way
- 31:05Speaker 1: I think about during success on the show is the
- 31:08Speaker 1: people are partners in this show, right and the stakeholders
- 31:11Speaker 1: in this show. Do they walk away happy? You know,
- 31:13Speaker 1: do they feel good about the show we made, whether
- 31:16Speaker 1: that's our host, you know, certainly the those in the
- 31:20Speaker 1: league and the commissioner and you know, the owners and
- 31:23Speaker 1: the people that you know have a say in, and
- 31:26Speaker 1: if this show continues to get made year after year,
- 31:28Speaker 1: you know, were those people did they come in feeling
- 31:31Speaker 1: like this was a great event and something the league
- 31:33Speaker 1: should be proud of. And then obviously the players, you know,
- 31:36Speaker 1: the players and legends that are there that we're celebrating.
- 31:38Speaker 1: We want them to walk away feeling like, man, that
- 31:41Speaker 1: was that was cooler than I thought it would be,
- 31:43Speaker 1: or that was more fun than I thought it would be,
- 31:45Speaker 1: or you know, that meant more to me than I
- 31:47Speaker 1: thought it might. So having those those people walk away
- 31:51Speaker 1: feeling great about their experience and great about the show
- 31:54Speaker 1: and the event we made, I think is our biggest
- 31:56Speaker 1: marker of success on this show. You know, last year,
- 31:59Speaker 1: I remember being there and Aaron Rodgers is sitting in
- 32:01Speaker 1: the front row and Josh Allen was nearby, and during
- 32:04Speaker 1: a commercial break, the two of them were chopping it
- 32:06Speaker 1: up like it's pretty cool. Now they've got to know
- 32:08Speaker 1: each other. They golf, they do all this stuff, and
- 32:10Speaker 1: but that's cool, like to see like you know, thirty
- 32:12Speaker 1: eight year old Aaron Rodgers with twenty four year old
- 32:14Speaker 1: Josh Allen and they're cleared up, and I'm like, who
- 32:17Speaker 1: makes the seating chart? That's you know. I've got a
- 32:19Speaker 1: meeting a little bit later today to go through the
- 32:22Speaker 1: first draft of that. It's fun. We have an incredible
- 32:26Speaker 1: seating team that are just freshly here from the Grammys.
- 32:29Speaker 1: I saw him as they got in here this morning.
- 32:31Speaker 1: They do you know, I sat with Harry Styles was yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Dana Kennerson and his team are so good at this.
- 32:40Speaker 1: So they'll they'll put together an initial draft, which is
- 32:44Speaker 1: what we're going to go through this afternoon. We look
- 32:46Speaker 1: at it on a big monitor and it's got everybody's
- 32:47Speaker 1: names on it, and they do it based on their
- 32:49Speaker 1: experience on this show and the run of show and
- 32:52Speaker 1: how we're doing things. And then you know, the director
- 32:54Speaker 1: and myself and a couple other producers will kind of
- 32:56Speaker 1: go through and say, wow, maybe we'll move this here
- 32:59Speaker 1: for that reason, or move this around here. It'd be
- 33:01Speaker 1: great when we do this comedy bid if we have
- 33:03Speaker 1: this person here and then can go to that person.
- 33:05Speaker 1: So it's team effort. But like I said, Dana and
- 33:08Speaker 1: his team are are really good at this. I gotta
- 33:10Speaker 1: cut more for you because I love this the Awards show.
- 33:13Speaker 1: You know, behind the scenes of the in the machinations. Um,
- 33:15Speaker 1: have you ever had to put the music on and
- 33:17Speaker 1: cut somebody off during a speech? Not in this show.
- 33:22Speaker 1: We've you know, a couple of things right, like one,
- 33:27Speaker 1: I think generally the athletes that were honoring don't tend
- 33:32Speaker 1: to want to go on and on and on. Not
- 33:35Speaker 1: as for boats. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so that helps us.
- 33:40Speaker 1: And then you know, like I said, excuse me. For
- 33:43Speaker 1: for many years we were on a bit of a
- 33:45Speaker 1: tape delay, so we had like an hour to trim
- 33:48Speaker 1: things if we needed to to get our show to
- 33:50Speaker 1: times we're off the air on time, and so we
- 33:54Speaker 1: had the luxury of being able to do that and
- 33:56Speaker 1: not having to cut people off. Last year we were
- 33:59Speaker 1: live for the first time. ABC was kind enough to
- 34:02Speaker 1: let us go. I think we went four or five
- 34:03Speaker 1: minutes long. Andrew's speech at the end of the night,
- 34:06Speaker 1: I was significantly longer than we expected it to be.
- 34:09Speaker 1: But it's incredible, and like you know, it's the last
- 34:11Speaker 1: thing in the night. The last thing we want to
- 34:13Speaker 1: do is like you know, play someone off like that. Well,
- 34:16Speaker 1: there are times when will you know, flashing the telepropter,
- 34:20Speaker 1: please wrap it up? And you know, if they don't
- 34:22Speaker 1: do it, we'll just start flashing it a little more often,
- 34:26Speaker 1: and they generally, you know, will take those cues from us.
- 34:29Speaker 1: All Right, you personally, Dave Chamberlain, you don't, you know,
- 34:31Speaker 1: get into sports and do all this stuff if you're
- 34:33Speaker 1: not a fan at heart, who was the one athlete
- 34:35Speaker 1: that you've met doing the NFL Honors that you're like,
- 34:37Speaker 1: all right, that's pretty cool. Uh, you know, I probably
- 34:41Speaker 1: I'm a giant Indianapolis Colts fan. I grew up in
- 34:43Speaker 1: Indianapolis and love that, you know. I Mora was close
- 34:48Speaker 1: with Peyton, as you said, So I think I'd met
- 34:51Speaker 1: Peyton before NFL Honors, but spending time around him and
- 34:56Speaker 1: with him through this was incredible. There was one year
- 35:00Speaker 1: he always you know, generally he'll come present one of
- 35:02Speaker 1: the bigger awards. Yeah, there was one year. I think
- 35:05Speaker 1: it was in Houston. He was getting ready to present
- 35:07Speaker 1: an award and he's just standing next to me backstage
- 35:11Speaker 1: and he's starting to point out things that I'm not
- 35:13Speaker 1: even noticing, And I was like, dude, you're better at
- 35:17Speaker 1: this than I am. How how does this work? Um? Yeah,
- 35:21Speaker 1: so you know, being able to sit there producing a
- 35:24Speaker 1: show with Peyton Manning giving me notes that are really
- 35:27Speaker 1: good notes, smart notes, that's pretty cool. I was thinking
- 35:30Speaker 1: you'd be like, you know, there's this guy Ted Marcha
- 35:32Speaker 1: Brota or Joseph die was in there. Dominic Rhodes walked
- 35:36Speaker 1: right in and I couldn't talk. Peyton Manning's pretty good.
- 35:41Speaker 1: And then my last one is this, like when you're
- 35:44Speaker 1: at the Switch and you're at the Levers and you're
- 35:46Speaker 1: doing all this stuff and it's going on, do you
- 35:48Speaker 1: have a chance to appreciate and enjoy the night or
- 35:50Speaker 1: is it just a pressure cooker? This is work, all
- 35:53Speaker 1: of the above, all of the above. Last year, you know,
- 35:57Speaker 1: like I said, we were live for the first time.
- 35:59Speaker 1: As you might remember, getting into the event was a
- 36:02Speaker 1: little bit of a challenge, like the traffic and the
- 36:05Speaker 1: secure walk. Yeah, we're right right next to the stadium,
- 36:08Speaker 1: so there were a lot of challenges that came with that.
- 36:10Speaker 1: And at the top of the show, a lot of
- 36:12Speaker 1: people that were supposed to be there, we're not there. Um,
- 36:15Speaker 1: So we on the fly, while we're on the air,
- 36:20Speaker 1: making decisions and and and talking to writers and stage
- 36:23Speaker 1: managers and talent people like, Okay, we're gonna move that.
- 36:25Speaker 1: We're gonna get rid of this person. He's going to
- 36:27Speaker 1: do that by himself. We got to change the script,
- 36:29Speaker 1: write that script so we can move him in there.
- 36:31Speaker 1: That's the fun stuff, right, Like doing doing those things
- 36:34Speaker 1: on the fly is the fun stuff. And you know,
- 36:36Speaker 1: while it's like there's you know, you're you're trying to
- 36:39Speaker 1: get everything done at the same time, I do feel
- 36:41Speaker 1: like I have some appreciation for like, man, this is
- 36:44Speaker 1: fun as hell. Um. You know, it's uh, there's nothing
- 36:48Speaker 1: like live TV, um, and I really really enjoy that
- 36:51Speaker 1: aspect of it. I can't wait. I'll be there. I'll
- 36:53Speaker 1: I'll be hovering around. I'll probably try to yeah, I'll
- 36:59Speaker 1: be denied, and then I'll have to be like, no,
- 37:01Speaker 1: I know, Dave Chamber on my podcast, You're the man,
- 37:05Speaker 1: give us real quick the rundown. When does red carpet start?
- 37:08Speaker 1: Where can we find this? And just you know, let's
- 37:12Speaker 1: get excited for this. This is one of the rare
- 37:14Speaker 1: nights we can all just appreciate and celebrate football and
- 37:16Speaker 1: what it's meant for us this year. Absolutely we are
- 37:19Speaker 1: super excited. So there's a rid carpet show on NFL
- 37:22Speaker 1: Network from eight pm to nine pm, and then we
- 37:27Speaker 1: are on live on NBC from nine to eleven hopefully
- 37:31Speaker 1: eleven pm sharp, and we don't go any longer. But yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 1: it's it'll be a lot of fun. We've got, you know,
- 37:39Speaker 1: obviously a lot of great awards. Man of the Year,
- 37:42Speaker 1: we're gonna be. You know, we couldn't do a show
- 37:44Speaker 1: like this about the NFL season without, you know, having
- 37:48Speaker 1: a big tribute to the first responders and medical personnel
- 37:53Speaker 1: that you know work with the mare Hamlin So yeah,
- 37:56Speaker 1: and we've got some great celebs, Tracy Morgan, Tiffany Hattis,
- 37:59Speaker 1: Joel McHale, you know, Cheryl Lee, Ralph her and some
- 38:04Speaker 1: amazing players were get you know, We've done our best
- 38:07Speaker 1: to talk some players into having some fun with us
- 38:09Speaker 1: and doing some fun things with Kelly. So hopefully you'd
- 38:13Speaker 1: be a great show of everybody really enjoys. Now, I
- 38:15Speaker 1: don't know if Mahomes is going to win the MVP yet.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I don't know if he's going to be in the building,
- 38:19Speaker 1: but if he is not in the building, feel free
- 38:22Speaker 1: to call me up to accept the Award on his
- 38:23Speaker 1: behalf just so I can get my face on TV.
- 38:25Speaker 1: I mean it's cool. I'm down with that. Absolutely, Yeah,
- 38:29Speaker 1: it's good. That makes sense. That makes a lot of sense, dude,
- 38:33Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you for joining everybody. The NFL Honors,
- 38:36Speaker 1: presented by a Visilon is going to be on NBC
- 38:40Speaker 1: this week on Thursday. Of course, the Red Carpet Nate
- 38:42Speaker 1: Burlison will be running the show. Kevin Frasier will be
- 38:45Speaker 1: there as well on NFL Network on Thursday beforehand. Dave,
- 38:49Speaker 1: I know you're a busy man. Thank you so much
- 38:51Speaker 1: for joining and giving us the lowdown on what it
- 38:52Speaker 1: takes to put on an event like the NFL Honors. Absolutely,
- 38:55Speaker 1: thank you for having me. Dave Chamberlain awesome insight on
- 39:04Speaker 1: what it takes to put on a live events, what
- 39:07Speaker 1: it means to do the NFL Honors gig, and then
- 39:10Speaker 1: really like all the bells and whistles that goes into
- 39:13Speaker 1: it that maybe you don't realize when you're watching it
- 39:14Speaker 1: on TV. Aron, did I come across as thirsty in
- 39:17Speaker 1: a way trying to like beg for camera time multiple times? No? No,
- 39:21Speaker 1: I thought that was an appropriate amount. Like if I'm
- 39:23Speaker 1: going I think it's like three o'clock, like it was
- 39:26Speaker 1: like a local. Like if I'm going at three o'clock,
- 39:28Speaker 1: like I thought, if you don't ask to be called
- 39:31Speaker 1: up to accept Mahome's award, if he wins, they're never
- 39:34Speaker 1: gonna offer it. Who else are they gonna who else? Like?
- 39:36Speaker 1: Who's going up there? Like Kingsbury is still in Thailand?
- 39:39Speaker 1: I know that. So he's the college coach. He's not
- 39:41Speaker 1: going up there his agent. I don't want to see
- 39:43Speaker 1: any agent accepting or other does Brittany and Jackson. Jackson
- 39:47Speaker 1: might come up. That would be a you know what,
- 39:50Speaker 1: That might be the move and that might go viral.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Jackson might have a dance or whatever like to go
- 39:55Speaker 1: with it. That could be a whole thing. Um, I
- 39:58Speaker 1: don't know. I thought that I was. Now that I've
- 40:00Speaker 1: recorded it with him already, I feel a little bit
- 40:02Speaker 1: gross that I was selling myself so hard, But you understand,
- 40:05Speaker 1: people in my business are so much worse than that.
- 40:07Speaker 1: I'm serious. I don't think. I mean, I think you
- 40:09Speaker 1: were fine. Like he understands you know that you've been
- 40:13Speaker 1: backstage already. If if he sees you back there one time, yeah,
- 40:16Speaker 1: you've been there before. It was cool. It was cool.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Um Dave is cool and his company puts on the SPS,
- 40:23Speaker 1: it puts on NFL honors. My big prediction, I don't
- 40:26Speaker 1: know anything, and I want you to predict too, So
- 40:28Speaker 1: like that Walter paid Man of the Year is the
- 40:30Speaker 1: most important award. It's what everyone does, and it's like
- 40:34Speaker 1: unsavory to predict. I gotta be honest, A good Morning Football.
- 40:39Speaker 1: When we got the thirty two nominees, I put together
- 40:42Speaker 1: like a little pool and I'm like, everyone, pick who
- 40:43Speaker 1: you think? Who do you think the NFL is gonna
- 40:46Speaker 1: pick form Walter paid Man? There, Everyone went with DAK
- 40:48Speaker 1: because he was like the biggest name. But the NFL
- 40:51Speaker 1: loves their Cameron Hayward of the Steelers and they love
- 40:55Speaker 1: de Mario Davis of the Saints. Those are my two
- 40:58Speaker 1: wild cards. I think Cam Hayward might win it from
- 41:01Speaker 1: the Steelers. I think Demaro Davis might win it. But
- 41:04Speaker 1: there are so many good nominees and they're so many
- 41:07Speaker 1: beloved guys, But DAK is the biggest name. What do
- 41:10Speaker 1: you think they just give to the biggest name or
- 41:12Speaker 1: do you think that maybe you get one of my guys?
- 41:14Speaker 1: De Mario or Kid was kind of wondering if they
- 41:16Speaker 1: would give it to Jared Goff, because Jared Goff, he
- 41:19Speaker 1: had the scenes in Hard Knocks this year in the
- 41:22Speaker 1: preseason with him doing m I forget the name of
- 41:26Speaker 1: his foundation, but he was working with kids on the show,
- 41:29Speaker 1: and so there's been he's a nominee. I wonder if
- 41:31Speaker 1: he would get it. I like it. Your your bet
- 41:34Speaker 1: is Jared Goff. I'm gonna go with de Mario. Davis
- 41:36Speaker 1: is my bet tomorrow, Davis, New Orleans Saints UM. And
- 41:40Speaker 1: if Dak wins it, Dak deserved it. It's something about that,
- 41:42Speaker 1: just yeah, that Dak is a very famous player and
- 41:45Speaker 1: he's nominated for it, UM very unsavored. A debate, who's
- 41:48Speaker 1: gonna win Walter Payton Man of the Year. When all
- 41:49Speaker 1: these guys give their time and their money to these causes,
- 41:52Speaker 1: and yet here we are Super Bowl week. Aaron, We've
- 41:55Speaker 1: got plenty more common. We've got multiple episodes this week
- 41:59Speaker 1: that are in works right now, big names, influential names.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Not to tease too much, but something different that only
- 42:06Speaker 1: our podcast can bring. I'm getting excited for the Super Bowl,
- 42:11Speaker 1: but I am also aware that it's it's just getting started.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Aaron Kaufman, Jason English, Matt Schneider, of course, Jason Kleinman
- 42:20Speaker 1: who churns out these social clips that help meg It
- 42:23Speaker 1: go viral. Meredith Batton at the NFL, who has been
- 42:26Speaker 1: so good to work with on this podcast all season.
- 42:29Speaker 1: And then our maestro on the one twos is a
- 42:31Speaker 1: gentleman named Jack Rudd. I love the theme music to
- 42:33Speaker 1: this podcast. Guys, plenty more to come. This is just
- 42:36Speaker 1: the first one. We'll see you later this week. The
- 43:05Speaker 1: season Peter Schrager is a production of the NFL and
- 43:09Speaker 1: partnership with iHeartRadio. For more podcasts from iHeartRadio, visit the
