- 0:01Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five Pro Football,
- 0:07the insider I've covered a little while, Jeff leg Wall. Jeff, his
- 0:11appearances are always must listen radio. You learn a lot. Brought to you
- 0:14five Betsafe Colorado, the exclusive club for passionate gamers and betters across the state.
- 0:20It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five. Yeah, it's Jeff
- 0:36Legwald. Time here on a Monday after noon. As the Chiefs win Super
- 0:40Bowl fifty eight, twenty five to twenty two, and the twenty twenty three
- 0:46campaign is officially in the books. Jeff Lgwald of ESPN with us right now
- 0:51on a Monday. Jeff Lagwald is always brought to you by Betsafe Colorado,
- 0:54the exclusive club for passionate gamers and betters across the state. All right,
- 0:58Jeff, I I will allow you to revisit the question that I asked you
- 1:03on Friday, because now we have new information. Is that guy the second
- 1:08greatest quarterback of all time? You know he's he's still with those other guys
- 1:15with me, and all right, it's a great company to be in.
- 1:18I mean, there's no bad answer there would. You know, you're in
- 1:23a small group of quarterbacks. Certainly when you get your third you know,
- 1:26there's still the Bradshaw, the Montanas and obviously Brady. But you know,
- 1:34in the Super Bowl era, you know, here's the thing, Nate,
- 1:38and we talked about it Friday, some we've never seen this trajectory in the
- 1:46Super Bowl era of a twenty eight year old quarterback who's I think won the
- 1:53division every year, he's been a full time starter. What's he played in
- 1:57now five conference championship games already, you know, the four Super Bowls.
- 2:05You know, it's we've not seen this trajectory on a player this young.
- 2:08You know, Brady to me still is a little different animal in that respect.
- 2:17But for a twenty eight year old guy, I'm not talking seasons,
- 2:22I'm talking age for a twenty eight year old guy to be where he is,
- 2:27and look, you know, it's almost exactly this scenario we talked about
- 2:31Friday. Talent top to bottom, just raw talent, graded talent. You
- 2:38I know a lot of people who would say, yeah, the forty nine
- 2:42ers are talented at more places, but in the end, you know,
- 2:49the most special player on the field had a minute whatever, And that was
- 2:54just enough time to throw a game winning touchdown pass to a guy who wasn't
- 3:00caught a touchdown pass all year. So I mean, it just shows you
- 3:04where he's at. Jeff, I'm to ask you would just ask Lindsay,
- 3:07because we talked to Lindsay about the whole you know, the Shanahan, the
- 3:09overtime thing. I was curious, is the clock tick down? Are we
- 3:14treating this like the fourth quarter because the Chiefs had not finished their possession,
- 3:17therefore the game wasn't tied. Are we going to just keep going? Obviously
- 3:22we learned it was just going to keep going, So why time it at
- 3:25all? Why why not just play it till it ends? Do you think?
- 3:31I think just the structure of the competitive clock that you wanted to resemble
- 3:38what it does during the regulation game. I mean the other sports, you
- 3:44know, hockey's always timed the extra period and all of that, and I
- 3:47think Andy, honestly, there's also natural rest breaks when the clock's running.
- 3:53You know, it stops on out of bounds and completion, So I think
- 3:59you have to figure out how you're going to do those stoppages as well,
- 4:03and you'd have to time the stoppages anyway, and the play clock even if
- 4:08the main clock wasn't running. So I think they just keep things resembling as
- 4:14close. But I think now when you look at it, certainly taking the
- 4:17ball first looks like a tactical error because the other team gets to play four
- 4:23down football then, no matter what, they're in four down situation all the
- 4:28time. And I think, you know, ultimately, as we run this
- 4:32out longer and get more data, that may be something people look at,
- 4:36because I do think it's an advantage. I think the Chiefs had an advantage
- 4:41knowing no matter where they were on the field, they were in four down
- 4:46territory. Yeah, it's because you think about it, they face that fourth
- 4:48down and one from their own thirty four yard line. If they have the
- 4:54ball first, Andy Reid might punt right there. You know you're giving up
- 4:59a chance to win the you know the other team can win it out right
- 5:00then when you put it away right and and and like there's the flip side
- 5:05of it too, though, Jeff of like, you know, when Kyle
- 5:08Shanahan said we want the ball third, like we want the ball if it's
- 5:13in a sudden death situation. We think we're at an advantage to get the
- 5:16ball first, which also it makes sense in that part of the conversation as
- 5:23well. And Andy and I were talking about this, like this is where
- 5:26Mahomes just sort of messes everything up. That's what you're saying, is right,
- 5:32And I would I would. I would go as far to say almost
- 5:38maybe Burrow too, but almost anyone else. You take the ball first and
- 5:44put the heat on them. Right, really cranked the pressure because I don't
- 5:48care about analytics and the Super Bowl with the game on, the guy doesn't
- 5:53feel heat, you know. Did you see how calm he looked. It
- 5:57was like it was a first quarter drop in September. I mean, he
- 6:01really, that's where we're at with him. He's gonna have to be injured
- 6:08or a lot of his teammates injured, or they have a bad year in
- 6:11free agency. I mean whatever, He's in the mix the minute he puts
- 6:15a helmet on every season, and we saw yesterday why And I used to
- 6:21say, There's been a lot of great quarterbacks I've seen in my career,
- 6:28but I've always felt like Montana had this inevitability about him about winning. I
- 6:33thought Brady had it, and I think Mahomes has it. There's just this
- 6:39little feeling of inevitability, like no matter what you do, because they figured
- 6:46it out. You know that the Niners had a good plan. Steve Wilkes
- 6:49coach the hell of a game for the Niners. They pinched the safeties in.
- 6:55They dared the Chiefs to throw it down the field. They were not
- 6:58afraid of anything the Chiefs had down the field. And the Chiefs still found
- 7:03a way to mix some motions and you know, run a little arrow and
- 7:09ran that little arrow concept with the with the tight end motion that they did
- 7:13it multiple times, including the game winning played. I think Andy Reid has
- 7:17since told everybody that you know a place called corn Dog and some fashion.
- 7:21So but it's just a little concept that every time they ran it it was
- 7:28it was successful. Jeff Legwold with us here on the ramos Law Hotline car
- 7:30Accident. You need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney ramos Law dot com.
- 7:35Jeff. The piece that I want to read, uh from you, I'm
- 7:39gonna I'll be your editor for a moment. I want to assign this to
- 7:43you. But I'm but I'm genuinely right now I can just not on the
- 7:49radio Mahomes yesterday nine carries for sixty six yards. Okay, he converted on
- 7:57on zone rate keepers twice in that game and a third in one situation in
- 8:01a fourth and one situation. Ultimately, I think his legs were the difference
- 8:05in that game. Once he started running like that really opened things up for
- 8:09Kansas City and got them in a better rhythm in terms of play calling.
- 8:11Here's the funny thing about Patrick Mahomes is he's an excellent runner, and yet
- 8:16he's not a running quarterback. I wouldn't define him as such. And he
- 8:22can beat you with his legs in so many different ways. Can defensive coordinators.
- 8:26And this is where it's like you dig into your contacts, talk to
- 8:30defensive coordinators, talk to game planners like can you put a spy on Patrick
- 8:35Mahomes or is that just an invitation for him to destroy you with the numbers
- 8:41advantage down the field? Like is there a way to be able to curb
- 8:43that all with him? You know, Kelsey negates the spy concept for the
- 8:50most part, because Kelsey's gonna work the hash. He's gonna go, He's
- 8:54gonna have all those choice routes on the hash where he gets to decide am
- 8:58I going inside? Am I going to fake leverage inside and go outside?
- 9:03And that's really that's that's sort of the area where the spy's gonna be working
- 9:09sometimes on the inside. And I mean, look what happened when the Niners
- 9:13tried to blitz him yesterday. He just he makes you he's just he's that
- 9:18guy. I mean, we can figure out ways too. You know,
- 9:24they had a sort of the code early. You got to get there with
- 9:28four and you can't let him extend. You know, You've you've got to
- 9:33make him retreat and and it worked the game. Yeah, the minute he's
- 9:39not retreating is you're in a lot of trouble just because once he sort of
- 9:45gets around you. And they did a really good job of it. But
- 9:48again, he's really good. Andy Reid's really good. And there you know,
- 9:54we talked Friday about the element of you know, how much is it
- 9:56worth to have been in that situation more than the other guys. I mean,
- 10:01their whole offense was calm. They didn't jump off sides, they didn't
- 10:05mess up motions. You know, they had a couple of snaps where you're
- 10:09like, man, that was closed, but in general, they played with
- 10:13you know, game on the line, composure and that that's tough to beat.
- 10:18I will say what makes him so difficult as a runner is he makes
- 10:22really good choices. He doesn't waste, he doesn't waist downs. Like even
- 10:26the biggest run to get the conversion, that's a naked bootleg. Watch what
- 10:33the line does at the snap. They're not firing, they're sort of shuffling.
- 10:37That's a pure naked bootleg. That's a really risky call in that situation.
- 10:43But he he's you know, when he fakes the the play action aspect
- 10:48of it, he understands what he's looking at and that it's not going to
- 10:54be a problem, and he makes a good choice, so it ends up
- 10:56being a game deciding play. Like he seriously watched the guy, right,
- 11:01it looks like he's got a poop the whole time that he's out there running.
- 11:05He's pooping on your plans. That's what he's doing. Wow, all
- 11:09right, No, I mean, he's so creative and he makes good choices.
- 11:15There's lots of guys in the league who can run, run around,
- 11:18escape people, school people. You know, once in a while, make
- 11:24this play where you go ohing on you and the next ten times they try
- 11:28it, you know, it's just horrible. He makes good choices. There
- 11:33are no wasteful runs, I think, is what I Holly would put it.
- 11:37All right, So, if you're in charge of the Broncos, the
- 11:39petents are gone. Leggy's been hired. Great find like something about your appearances
- 11:46on Altitude Sports Radio goes that's the guy. What are you doing to start
- 11:50to construct something to take on this Chiefs dynasty? Because Nay and I talked
- 11:54about it in the first hour. I think what this does if nothing else
- 11:58Leggy and I knows aren't into being logical or patient or any of that,
- 12:03but it should tell you you need a build for the first time. I
- 12:07think there's no denying for anybody in Broncos country. There is not a quick
- 12:11fix. It's not we're a quarterback away or this or that. You need
- 12:16a build. What are you doing to start the build? Well, you
- 12:20know you got to do it in April somehow, so you got to start
- 12:24positioning yourself. And you're not positioned in this draft to sort of start it
- 12:31in earnest, but you can start it in this draft. You know,
- 12:35this could be the draft where people talk about these three starters came out of
- 12:39you know, this draft. But you know it's very clear that, you
- 12:45know, free agency is always going to play a part. I'm never going
- 12:48to deny that. I mean, the two thousand, you know fifteen,
- 12:52the you know twenty fourteen free agency class that became a Super Bowl winner.
- 12:58It showed you what three the agency can do on a draft built team for
- 13:03the Broncos. And you know, I think that's a good model. You
- 13:09know, that's a good good model. Build through the draft, and you
- 13:13have the biggest checkbook in the league. So when you want to take a
- 13:16swing, you can get anybody you want. And I but they have to
- 13:22accept the first part of it, I think. And I'm, uh,
- 13:26you know, we don't know if they have that inclination or not. Are
- 13:28they are they they need a patient year, at least one year where you're
- 13:33just gonna have to sort of eat your Brussels sprouts and and live with it
- 13:39because they're they're in a tough spot. Right by the way, it's always
- 13:43a vegetable. Is there a vegetable? Jeffy likes. You don't like broccoli,
- 13:48you don't like Brussels sprouts? I actually like it. I like them
- 13:52all, but my kids. I usually use the ones my kids would turn
- 13:54away. You know, that's how my that's how my brain works. But
- 14:00no, it's you know, I think sometimes we all get wrapped up and
- 14:05like there's this unlimited number of solutions, but there are only two ways to
- 14:09acquire players in the NFL. You can pick your own or sign somebody else's.
- 14:16Those are it. You know, you don't have this long list of
- 14:22of ways to do it, and signing somebody else's is as your predominant way
- 14:30to do it, has never really worked. We look how many Chiefs on
- 14:35that field last night are Chief Chiefs you know picked. You know that they
- 14:41built the secondary. You know their corners, they might have the best tandem
- 14:45of corners in the league. You know, they're all pro. Picket corner
- 14:50is a draft pick. Mahomes is a draft pick. You know, Kelsey
- 14:52is a draft pick. The whole, almost the whole, you know,
- 14:56the interior, three up front are picks. You know, It's just that's
- 15:01it. That's how to do it. And certainly, if you win the
- 15:05lotto at quarterback, you're gonna be very good. But you got to get
- 15:09a quarterback and a good enough team around him to get it done. Yeah.
- 15:13I mean, and this is where Andy Reid deserves credit. Is like
- 15:16they didn't really win the lottery at quarterback, you know, like they identified
- 15:20a guy, they took him at number ten, they developed him. He
- 15:24sat for a year behind Alex Smith, like they they built the team before
- 15:28he started. And he's gotten better every single year of his career. And
- 15:31Andy Reid has done all of that work real quick, Leggy. Last thing,
- 15:37report from Ian Rapaport yesterday Broncos keeping all options on the table at quarterback,
- 15:43including the possibility of reopening talks with Russell Wilson about restructuring his contract to
- 15:48keep him in Denver for twenty twenty four. What do you make of this
- 15:52note from Rapaport? Is this optics or is there a real chance of that
- 15:56happening and Russell going along with it? You know, I said it Friday,
- 16:00I still believe it from from all of the people I've spoken to.
- 16:07I think this is more a you have no chance of trading him unless you
- 16:14and I think the feeling is there's there's a very slim chance of trading him
- 16:18in any scenario because of the contract. But you have absolutely no chance of
- 16:22trading him if everyone firmly believes you're going to release him. But most people
- 16:27believe that anyway, So and I you know, look, I've written many
- 16:33sentences in my career with the words possible or could I always temper reports that
- 16:42say a team would be open to the possibility. Yeah, I'm I'm open
- 16:48to the possibility. I will be six four tomorrow, but I don't know
- 16:53that that's really going to happen. Would you be able to dunk if unbelievable?
- 17:02Leggy Man, good stuff is always, buddy, Thank you, Thanks
