Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome to Disgraceland after Bertie.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, A little thing we
- 0:31Speaker 1: like to call the after party. This is the show
- 0:35Speaker 1: after the show, the party after the party, the bridge
- 0:37Speaker 1: to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to
- 0:39Speaker 1: the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt. On
- 0:43Speaker 1: this episode we are talking about Lil Kim, a literal
- 0:47Speaker 1: Red Sox heartbreaker from a caller fiddler, and of course
- 0:50Speaker 1: your voicemails, text, dms and more and as always, a
- 0:54Speaker 1: whole lotter Rosie. All right, disc goes, let's get into it. Yes, yes, yes,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgrace LANMD bonus episode where we are
- 1:13Speaker 1: hoping to not purgere ourselves and get sent to the
- 1:16Speaker 1: big house. Like this week's subject of Disgraceland, Lil Kim,
- 1:20Speaker 1: Little Kim on record might be the baddest female artists
- 1:24Speaker 1: of them all. As we outlined in this week's full
- 1:26Speaker 1: episode of Little Kim in Disgraceland and Off Record, Little
- 1:30Speaker 1: Kim was also.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Bad, bad, bad.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Lying is bad. Lying is not good in any aspect
- 1:36Speaker 1: of your life, and it will not get you very
- 1:38Speaker 1: far in criminal court, okay. And shootouts. Shootouts are also
- 1:42Speaker 1: you got it, bad shootouts in broad daylight, especially bad
- 1:46Speaker 1: in the middle of a major city like downtown Manhattan.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Also the makings of bad, bad individuals. The crime, Okay,
- 1:55Speaker 1: the crime here at the heart of the Little Kim story.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It's again detail in the full episode. I'm not going
- 2:01Speaker 1: to go through the whole thing again, but what I
- 2:03Speaker 1: want to drill down into here in this bonus episode,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the part of the story that I thought was interesting
- 2:09Speaker 1: that I didn't get to spend a lot of time
- 2:11Speaker 1: on sometime, but not a lot of time on in
- 2:13Speaker 1: the full episode, is the punishment for the crime that
- 2:17Speaker 1: Little Kim committed. And look, it's a simple story. Little
- 2:21Speaker 1: Kim and her crew. They were involved in a shootout.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Little Kim lied on the stand to protect her crew,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and Little Kim was proven to be a liar. She
- 2:29Speaker 1: perjured herself. She was sentenced to real time a year
- 2:33Speaker 1: in a day, and she did almost all that time.
- 2:35Speaker 1: She got out on her good behavior a couple months
- 2:36Speaker 1: shaved off her sentence or something like that I can't remember.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Exactly what it was.
- 2:40Speaker 1: The judge who this is ridiculous. The judge who sentenced
- 2:45Speaker 1: Little Kim was inspired by Martha Stewart's sentencing for her
- 2:49Speaker 1: crime of insider trading. But Martha Stewart got to do
- 2:53Speaker 1: her time in a minimum security prison that Little Kim
- 2:56Speaker 1: was sent to Philadelphia Federal Detention Center. Now argue whether
- 3:00Speaker 1: or not that's fair or not, or what the reasons
- 3:02Speaker 1: behind it were. The type of crime that Little Kim
- 3:05Speaker 1: perjured herself over versus the type of crime that Martha
- 3:08Speaker 1: Stewart was involved with. But lying is lying, and uh,
- 3:12Speaker 1: the punishments here were different. Okay, Little Kim, like Martha Stewart, though,
- 3:18Speaker 1: thrived After her release from prison, Little Kim dropped her
- 3:24Speaker 1: fourth album, The Naked Truth from Behind Bars. It was
- 3:27Speaker 1: something like her first week in jail or something in prison.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Excuse me that that record came out and it was
- 3:33Speaker 1: a smash and for a moment there upon Little Kim's
- 3:37Speaker 1: release and throughout the mid odds, her career thrived like
- 3:43Speaker 1: it was. It was a whole other thing. It was
- 3:45Speaker 1: a whole new act. It was huge. It was massive,
- 3:47Speaker 1: I mean record sales, big, albums, the whole the whole
- 3:51Speaker 1: thing shows everything. So you know, the question is this
- 3:55Speaker 1: is what I want to get into. There's the issue
- 3:57Speaker 1: of the punishment. Was the punishment fair right? The judge
- 4:01Speaker 1: was said to have been inspired by Martha Stewart sentencaying,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and that's what influenced the sentence sing of Little Kim.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yet the types of prisons they were sentenced to were
- 4:08Speaker 1: two totally different things. Okay, so number one was the
- 4:10Speaker 1: punishment fair. Number two to going to prison help Kim's
- 4:14Speaker 1: career did help her career thrive. It's my opinion that
- 4:20Speaker 1: prison definitely helped Tupac's career after he got out of jail,
- 4:25Speaker 1: California Love Banger banger single and his death row profile.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Post prison, he was huge, huge, and again California Love
- 4:35Speaker 1: might be his best song. Lil Wayne weapons and drug charges.
- 4:38Speaker 1: It resulted in an eight to twelve month sentence. We
- 4:41Speaker 1: detailed the Lil Wayne stuff back in season seven of Disgraceland.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Post prison, Low Wayne, huge, okay, huge even now he's
- 4:48Speaker 1: nothing if not culturally relevant, He's massive. Steve Earle, Steve Earl.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I don't know if a lot of you know Steve Earl.
- 4:54Speaker 1: He's this hardcore troubadour Americana country guy, great songwriter, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: was supposed to be the heir to Bob Dylan. Started
- 5:03Speaker 1: hanging around with guns n' roses in the eighties, got
- 5:06Speaker 1: hooked on a lot of drugs, did time for narcotics
- 5:09Speaker 1: beef and wrote an incredible record Train of Coming from
- 5:13Speaker 1: Behind Bars. And you know when he did that, he
- 5:16Speaker 1: got out of jail. That record came out and he
- 5:18Speaker 1: get a Grammy nomination for the album after his release
- 5:20Speaker 1: from prison. Merle Haggard another country guy much earlier than
- 5:24Speaker 1: Steve Ear. Obviously, his entire career came post prison time
- 5:27Speaker 1: in San Quentin. Paul McCartney. Paul McCartney, he did time.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It was only ten days and it was in nineteen eighty,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but it was in a real prison in Japan. And
- 5:36Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong. But Paul McCartney has had
- 5:39Speaker 1: quite the career over the past forty years. So what
- 5:43Speaker 1: about the musicians who are currently behind bars? YNW. Melly
- 5:48Speaker 1: or what about take K forty seven or Big Lurch,
- 5:51Speaker 1: two artists that we covered back in season one of
- 5:53Speaker 1: Disgracelander or R Kelly who's in jail right now? Who
- 5:57Speaker 1: we haven't covered who I'm waiting to cover who I'm
- 5:59Speaker 1: still trying to figure out how to cover, or or
- 6:02Speaker 1: Suge Knight. I know sug Knight is not a musician,
- 6:05Speaker 1: but he's definitely the music industry. Uh. He's been featured
- 6:07Speaker 1: heavily on the show, in multiple episodes on Tupac and
- 6:11Speaker 1: then Notorious Big. When these guys get out, more specifically
- 6:15Speaker 1: these artists, are they gonna have careers if they get out?
- 6:20Speaker 4: You know?
- 6:20Speaker 1: Are they gonna have bigger careers? Six one seven, nine
- 6:23Speaker 1: oh six, six six three eight. Let me know your answer,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and let me know which musician has had the best
- 6:28Speaker 1: post prison career in your eyes, Lil kim Merle Haggard,
- 6:32Speaker 1: Lil Wayne, Paul McCartney. And assuming they're ever released, can
- 6:36Speaker 1: we expect any careers at all from r Kelly take
- 6:39Speaker 1: or Big Lurch. I think I know the answer to
- 6:41Speaker 1: that one, but I'm gonna ask anyways. Six one seven
- 6:43Speaker 1: nine oh six, six six three eight. Leave your answer
- 6:46Speaker 1: via voicemail or text, or you can hit me at
- 6:48Speaker 1: this Gray lampod on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, wherever, Twitter.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I'll be back in the flash.
- 7:08Speaker 1: All right, we are back, and you know the drill,
- 7:10Speaker 1: as I said there at the end of that block
- 7:11Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight,
- 7:13Speaker 1: to send a text or leave a voicemail like Amber
- 7:17Speaker 1: here from North Carolina in the two five.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Two, Hey Jake, it's Amber from North Carolina. And the
- 7:25Speaker 4: two I gotta say. My top five are Lupe Fiasco,
- 7:29Speaker 4: Brother Ali, Biggy, Atmosphere and I don't know. I guess
- 7:35Speaker 4: I'll throw on Twist or Common or one of those two.
- 7:40Speaker 4: All right, Thanks for the great work up in a
- 7:42Speaker 4: long time listener, Keep up, all.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Right, Thanks for the voicemail Amber. Amber was kind enough
- 7:48Speaker 1: to send us to send in her top five MC's.
- 7:52Speaker 1: This is a question that surfaced in one of our
- 7:54Speaker 1: bonus episodes from a couple of days back. Solid List.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But Amber, I don't know that I have any of
- 8:00Speaker 1: your top fives on my list. Mine are decidedly more
- 8:03Speaker 1: old school and will likely generate much side eye from
- 8:06Speaker 1: you youngins. Number one, I Go ice Cube, number two,
- 8:10Speaker 1: Jay Z three, Slick Rick four, Chuck D five. Can
- 8:15Speaker 1: I say all three Beastie Boys for number five? Can I?
- 8:18Speaker 1: I can't. I'm making up the rules, so That's what
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna do. Ad Rock Mike d MCA combined for
- 8:24Speaker 1: number five. That's my top five MC list. Got a
- 8:29Speaker 1: lot of incoming on this. I feel like this deserves
- 8:31Speaker 1: its own sort of episode or something. There's Like I
- 8:35Speaker 1: said in our mini episode, the fiftieth anniversary of hip
- 8:38Speaker 1: hop is coming up. I want to explore this question
- 8:42Speaker 1: more Top five MC's of all time. We've got fifty
- 8:46Speaker 1: years to choose from? Is eminem on this list? Who else?
- 8:52Speaker 1: Who are we forgetting? Who are we not talking about? Nas? God,
- 8:56Speaker 1: there's so many, Lil Wayne, there's there's so many here
- 8:59Speaker 1: that we should probably litigate to some degree. I'm not
- 9:03Speaker 1: exactly sure in what forum, but I want to dig
- 9:07Speaker 1: in a little deeper. Six one seven, nine oh six
- 9:10Speaker 1: six six three eight. We'll get into more of your
- 9:13Speaker 1: top five mcs. Keep the recommendations on that one coming
- 9:16Speaker 1: your suggestions let me know, all right. I've been talking
- 9:19Speaker 1: a lot about sports lately, mainly baseball and a little
- 9:23Speaker 1: basketball sort of with some levity, but mainly baseball because
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm once again obsessed with the sport. And despite the
- 9:33Speaker 1: Red Sox and how they've been playing this year, though
- 9:35Speaker 1: they have been good, over the last weekend, they just
- 9:37Speaker 1: swept the Yankees, and I was there for one of
- 9:39Speaker 1: the games. Yeah, I'm just I'm all in on the
- 9:43Speaker 1: Red Sox. I'm all in on the College World Series
- 9:45Speaker 1: for the first time in my life. I'm all in
- 9:48Speaker 1: on the Miami Marlins as a National League team. A
- 9:52Speaker 1: lot of this has to do with my kids. I
- 9:53Speaker 1: talked about this before, but we got this message here.
- 9:58Speaker 1: This might be a Hall of Fame disgraced voicemail here
- 10:01Speaker 1: from Mark in the four to oh one.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Let's listen to it, Jake, this is mock in Providence.
- 10:06Speaker 5: I'm going to speak nice and slow. I'm not going
- 10:08Speaker 5: to overmodulate. The Boston Red Sox. The last home game
- 10:12Speaker 5: I saw was October first, two thousand and four, Sunday night.
- 10:17Speaker 5: The Red Slobs were down all and three. I had ticket,
- 10:21Speaker 5: I had box seats near my girlfriend. We were freezing out,
- 10:24Speaker 5: fucking asses off. In the fourth running inning, I said, Pat,
- 10:29Speaker 5: let's get the hell out of here. We jump, We
- 10:32Speaker 5: get on the tee, drive out to the get out
- 10:36Speaker 5: in the t station with thirteen stops, get in the
- 10:40Speaker 5: cargo home. Red Sox famously stole a base, David Ortiz
- 10:44Speaker 5: hit a home run. They won the Royal Series.
- 10:46Speaker 4: I left.
- 10:47Speaker 5: I'm the joke of the town. Can't believe it. First
- 10:51Speaker 5: game and then following year in two thousand and five,
- 10:54Speaker 5: they get their rings. Guy across the street says, I'm pumped.
- 10:57Speaker 5: I'm going to watch this game. I took the day off.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I was working in a bank. They heled me a
- 11:02Speaker 5: day off. Within one hour of the game starting, the
- 11:07Speaker 5: ambulances pull up to his house. He died of a
- 11:10Speaker 5: fucking hot attack. He was so excited. He owned the
- 11:13Speaker 5: old time. It's tap in Providence, Rhode Island. True story,
- 11:16Speaker 5: none of it nothing, none.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Of it's fault.
- 11:18Speaker 5: If you want google it. That was the first opening
- 11:22Speaker 5: day of nineteen of two thousand and five. But I
- 11:24Speaker 5: was there two thousand and four, and I missed the
- 11:26Speaker 5: whole motherfucking thing. Okay, trying not to overmodulate. That was
- 11:31Speaker 5: a terrible phone call I made thanks Rock and Roller.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Wild story Mark, Dude. I don't even know what to
- 11:40Speaker 1: say except the channel my inner de Niro and from
- 11:43Speaker 1: Copland and just say, you blew it. You blew it.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Should have stated that game, dude. Although I don't blame
- 11:51Speaker 1: me for you leaving, I PROBA would have done the
- 11:52Speaker 1: same thing. Seriously, that's that's like just in my nature
- 11:55Speaker 1: to do that. But uh, yeah, man, I don't I
- 11:59Speaker 1: don't know what to tell. Yeah, that's an all that's
- 12:01Speaker 1: an all timer. That story belongs in like a fucking
- 12:04Speaker 1: Matt Damon movie or something. Uh sorry to hear about
- 12:07Speaker 1: your friend's heart attack as well. That is brutal, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 1: And Mark, you know you're free to overmodulate with me
- 12:13Speaker 1: anytime you want, brother, all right. Also, Mark, you worked
- 12:17Speaker 1: in a bank and you're from Providence, so I'm not
- 12:19Speaker 1: convinced that you're not a character from the Friends of
- 12:21Speaker 1: Eddie Coyle. So by all means, uh, stay in touch
- 12:23Speaker 1: and stay out of prison. Okay, Uh, Socks might be
- 12:26Speaker 1: clawn back this year. Like I said earlier, I was
- 12:28Speaker 1: as one of the games over the weekend was supposed
- 12:30Speaker 1: to go uh Saturday night with my two sons and
- 12:35Speaker 1: my stepdad little Father's day plan. It poured out. They
- 12:39Speaker 1: rescheduled for Sunday and we get there, we sit down,
- 12:43Speaker 1: Yankees go up uh two to oh first inning. It's like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: oh boy, this is gonna be brutal.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Uh.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Then the Socks came back and they won and it
- 12:52Speaker 1: was actually a really great game. It wasn't a blow out.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It was close for a while and then the Socks
- 12:55Speaker 1: went ahead comfortably. It was an awesome time. Only thing
- 12:58Speaker 1: that was that was weird and is, like I can
- 13:01Speaker 1: I've been to a lot of Red Sox Yankees games
- 13:03Speaker 1: at Fenway, and I have never ever seen this many
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yankees fans at a Red Sox game in my life.
- 13:11Speaker 1: It wasn't fifty to fifty, but it felt like it
- 13:13Speaker 1: at times. It felt close. It was brutal and just
- 13:17Speaker 1: like Yankees fans like brazen. I remember a time when
- 13:21Speaker 1: that was not allowed at all, not even close. I
- 13:25Speaker 1: suppose it's better than it is now, but still it was.
- 13:28Speaker 1: It was a little like what the fuck? Anyways, Yankees lost,
- 13:31Speaker 1: Yankees got swept, all right, So there you have it. Also,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I just gotta say to Red Sox fans, the Yankee
- 13:37Speaker 1: suck chant right like it's it doesn't work when the
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yankees are four games up in the standings, we sound
- 13:44Speaker 1: like assholes. Okay, it's an asshole chant if you're behind
- 13:48Speaker 1: the other team, unless you're in like a division series
- 13:51Speaker 1: or something and it's a one game playoff or something
- 13:53Speaker 1: like that, and you know, somebody fucks up on the
- 13:55Speaker 1: other team or stuff. I get that, but when you're down,
- 13:58Speaker 1: when you're down four games in the fucking standings, like,
- 14:02Speaker 1: come on, we're better than that, Boston. All right, enough sports,
- 14:04Speaker 1: let's do this voicemail from the eight oh one.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Hey dud, Yeah, man, I love your show. I love
- 14:11Speaker 6: the lyrical way you put your words together. I mean
- 14:13Speaker 6: it's not just a fantastic stories, but it's like.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Poetry listening to you.
- 14:18Speaker 6: And I really liked your thing on Robert Johnson.
- 14:21Speaker 5: And there's a lot of stuff.
- 14:23Speaker 6: For years I haven't heard yet, so hey, but I
- 14:27Speaker 6: was listening to your after party with Justin Bieber and
- 14:29Speaker 6: you're talking about bad dads, and you might check out
- 14:33Speaker 6: Rick Jains. He was like a kind of a pop
- 14:36Speaker 6: star in the seventies.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I think it was like soul pop punk.
- 14:39Speaker 6: Hit bad killed him from what I understand, and alsos,
- 14:43Speaker 6: you could do a show about rock stars who themselves
- 14:45Speaker 6: are bad dads, like John Lennon. He used to brag
- 14:49Speaker 6: about how he loves hitting women. And John Lennon also
- 14:53Speaker 6: loved his first wife and child with no child support.
- 14:56Speaker 6: So anyway, some ideas and thanks you for the great
- 15:00Speaker 6: oh and got you good bye, Adios adio.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Some Sacramento.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Bye.
- 15:07Speaker 1: All right, thank you, ado one for the kind words
- 15:09Speaker 1: about Robert Johnson and for your listenership. A couple of things.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I believe you're a new listener, so I'm gonna just
- 15:17Speaker 1: give you a couple things here. Believe you're confusing Rick
- 15:19Speaker 1: James with Marvin Gaye. But but, but, but, ado One,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I have have no fear at to one. We have
- 15:25Speaker 1: episodes on both artists, including Marvin Gaye's murder at the
- 15:30Speaker 1: hands of his father just in time for Father's Day
- 15:33Speaker 1: and also on Father's Day. I hear you on John Lennon, However,
- 15:36Speaker 1: I think the story is a little more nuanced. For
- 15:39Speaker 1: what I mean on that, check out the three John
- 15:41Speaker 1: Lennon episodes that we've done, specifically the two parter that's
- 15:46Speaker 1: further back in the archive, and we get into his
- 15:48Speaker 1: relationship with with Sean not so much Julian. But yeah,
- 15:52Speaker 1: John Lennon not a perfect guy, made some mistakes, atoned
- 15:56Speaker 1: for a lot of them. Definitely not a black and
- 15:59Speaker 1: white situation. So check that out eight oh one and
- 16:02Speaker 1: let me know what you think. All right, get back
- 16:03Speaker 1: to me. Leave another voicemail. Okay, good voicemails. Trying to
- 16:08Speaker 1: keep these episodes tight, trying to keep them to about
- 16:11Speaker 1: twenty five thirty minutes. So you know we've got I
- 16:14Speaker 1: don't know if you guys know we've got these other We've
- 16:16Speaker 1: got this other bonus episode that was mini episode we're
- 16:19Speaker 1: doing excuse me on Monday's, we're teeing up the week.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'm answering the emails over there. Now we've got the
- 16:23Speaker 1: wrap party where I'm also answering voicemails and texts. Gonna
- 16:27Speaker 1: hope to be doing more of that on social media
- 16:30Speaker 1: as well, and really round out this engagement with you
- 16:33Speaker 1: guys as best as I possibly can. Let's though, for
- 16:37Speaker 1: the time being right here, move on from the voicemails
- 16:39Speaker 1: and get into some texts, all right. Last, let's see
- 16:44Speaker 1: in the pre party episode we talk about odd music
- 16:48Speaker 1: collaborations in our mini episode on Monday with because of
- 16:54Speaker 1: the little Kim Tommy Lee thing that went down, so
- 16:58Speaker 1: I asked you guys for some of your stranger music collaborations.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Got this one from the three one four? Okay for
- 17:04Speaker 1: odd music collaborations. I don't know if you can get
- 17:07Speaker 1: any weirder than Bing Crosby and David Bowie doing Little
- 17:12Speaker 1: Drummer boy. Yes, that is weird, super weird, but it
- 17:15Speaker 1: works somehow. A lot of other you guys will know
- 17:18Speaker 1: that one. I got a weird one coming up for
- 17:19Speaker 1: you here later in this in this episode. And when I
- 17:22Speaker 1: read that text, the reason I picked that text to read,
- 17:24Speaker 1: I read all the text in real time. I don't
- 17:26Speaker 1: sort of like prevet them or anything. When I read
- 17:29Speaker 1: it here, when I glanced at it, I read bing
- 17:32Speaker 1: Crosby as David Crosby, and my brain went, oh my god,
- 17:34Speaker 1: David Crosby and David Bowie collaborated together. That's fucked up.
- 17:39Speaker 1: But of course it was the big Crosby one. All right,
- 17:41Speaker 1: let's move on. In reference to our summer soundtrack question
- 17:45Speaker 1: from a couple of weeks back from the two eight one,
- 17:48Speaker 1: we've got a text here, Summer of Love. Oh, we're
- 17:50Speaker 1: asking about best summer jams in light of Summertime by
- 17:53Speaker 1: Will Smith. So two eight one writes in hijake Summer
- 17:57Speaker 1: of Love by the b fifty Tiers, I don't know
- 17:59Speaker 1: that song Summer of sixty nine by Brian Adams. I
- 18:02Speaker 1: know that song. I bought that on forty five when
- 18:04Speaker 1: I was a little boy. How cheesy was I? Boys?
- 18:08Speaker 1: Of Summer by Don Henley, yup, great one, Summer Nights
- 18:11Speaker 1: by Grease or in Greece, I should say, and Last
- 18:15Speaker 1: Summer by the Motels.
- 18:17Speaker 3: I don't know that one.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And bonus track Hot Child in the City. All right.
- 18:21Speaker 1: That's a solid list there, solid list, some classic rock
- 18:23Speaker 1: ones there. What else we got here? From the eight
- 18:27Speaker 1: sixty four Jake Father of all podcasts, Happy Father's Day
- 18:31Speaker 1: from your number one fan, Elaine Laney from the eight
- 18:34Speaker 1: six to four. Thank you Laney. I appreciate that. Let's
- 18:38Speaker 1: see what else we got here? Got another text here
- 18:41Speaker 1: from the four one? Oh is that right? It says
- 18:44Speaker 1: thanks for the food Fighter interview. Got my t shirt
- 18:47Speaker 1: been online three hours? Grab two Madonna tickets for Boston
- 18:51Speaker 1: eight thirty one twenty three. That's awesome, have fun at Madonna.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I'm a little bummed. I bought Madonna tickets, which she
- 18:58Speaker 1: was supposed to come about two years ago, and maybe
- 19:01Speaker 1: I might have been more three years ago. She canceled
- 19:05Speaker 1: and it really pissed me off. For some reason. I
- 19:07Speaker 1: was really excited to go. So when she announced these shows,
- 19:11Speaker 1: I says, like, fuck that, fuck Madonna. But that's just silly.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I don't know I should probably go see Madonna. I
- 19:16Speaker 1: don't think she's gonna be around tour much longer. No,
- 19:19Speaker 1: I don't mean that to sound like there's anything ominous happening,
- 19:22Speaker 1: But you know, how long can people tour for? That's
- 19:24Speaker 1: all I'm saying. All Right, all right, get a text
- 19:26Speaker 1: here from the five oh waight, Hey Jake. This is
- 19:28Speaker 1: Tracy from the five O eight, And it's not my
- 19:30Speaker 1: aunt Tracy because she spells her name differently. She says,
- 19:34Speaker 1: I'm admittedly playing ketchup on episodes, and I'm about to
- 19:37Speaker 1: listen to the Beiber episode, not my music, but I'm
- 19:39Speaker 1: so glad that you did it. I feel like his
- 19:41Speaker 1: story is exactly the type of story that the podcast
- 19:43Speaker 1: is about, no matter what his style of music is.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I'm interested to hear you take on it. I've often
- 19:48Speaker 1: wondered how I would have handled that much money and
- 19:49Speaker 1: freedom at that age. I'm pretty sure I'd have engaged
- 19:51Speaker 1: in some bad behavior too, so I've always given him
- 19:54Speaker 1: a little slack love the pod. Thanks for doing what
- 19:56Speaker 1: you do, Tracy. Thanks Tracy, and yeah, you know, from
- 20:00Speaker 1: the beginning, this podcast has not been about a particular
- 20:03Speaker 1: style of music. I definitely follow my interests, and I
- 20:06Speaker 1: am more inclined to the classic rock, punk, rock hip
- 20:10Speaker 1: hop universe than I am the pop universe. But still,
- 20:14Speaker 1: to me, it's all about the humanity. It's all about
- 20:17Speaker 1: the human stories. So I'll go in any direction I can,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and I'm happy to hear that you are here for
- 20:23Speaker 1: Thank you, Tracy. All right, we'll do one more text
- 20:25Speaker 1: here from the nine two eight Greetings Jake, love all
- 20:28Speaker 1: the Double Elvis offerings. Just listen to the after party
- 20:30Speaker 1: episode with Chris Shifflett, and I automatically thought of a
- 20:33Speaker 1: couple of guitar players he should try to get Tim
- 20:35Speaker 1: Henson and Scotty Lapage, both of Polifia. If you've not
- 20:39Speaker 1: heard these guys, you should thank you for your hard
- 20:40Speaker 1: work and keep the episodes coming, please, you got it?
- 20:43Speaker 1: Nine two eight. I've never heard of Tim Henson and
- 20:45Speaker 1: Scotty la Page, but I will pass this message along
- 20:48Speaker 1: to the folks at Double Elvis, to the producers and
- 20:50Speaker 1: to Chris. And of course this is in reference to
- 20:52Speaker 1: the Chris Shiflett from the Foo Fighters podcast that we
- 20:54Speaker 1: produce for Double Elvis called Shred with Shifty. This is
- 20:58Speaker 1: If you guys don't know about this, you probably do
- 21:00Speaker 1: because I interviewed Chris in the Last after Party, But
- 21:02Speaker 1: if you don't, it is a podcast Chris has with
- 21:06Speaker 1: a video component where Chris sits down with some amazing
- 21:08Speaker 1: guitar players and they go through their legendary riffs as
- 21:11Speaker 1: sort of a tutorial of sorts. And this was some
- 21:14Speaker 1: pretty big, heavy hitters that you're going to want to
- 21:17Speaker 1: You're gonna want to learn your risks from. So, sirch
- 21:19Speaker 1: Shred was shifty. Where you get your podcasts? All right? Uh,
- 21:23Speaker 1: you guys know six one seven nine oh six six
- 21:26Speaker 1: six three eight. That is the way to contact me.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Leave me a voicemail, semi a text, but you can
- 21:33Speaker 1: also get in touch via Instagram, Facebook and even sometimes Twitter.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I will respond, but mainly Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. And
- 21:43Speaker 1: let's do a couple DM responses here. Let me pull
- 21:47Speaker 1: up the old Instagram machine, make sure I got the
- 21:50Speaker 1: right stuff. Here we go, So this one from who
- 21:55Speaker 1: is this from? Ashley? Lauren writes, First of all, I'll
- 21:59Speaker 1: say picture of the bon Scott statue, which is a
- 22:01Speaker 1: pretty great statue. It says bon Scott's statue in Fremantle
- 22:06Speaker 1: where he grew up. My friend's dad told me the
- 22:08Speaker 1: other day he was a professional footballer in Frio in
- 22:10Speaker 1: the seventies and bon Scott always stole the girls. He
- 22:14Speaker 1: picked up that he couldn't compete, but he couldn't hate
- 22:17Speaker 1: him because he was too good of a guy. That's
- 22:19Speaker 1: a pretty cool message, Thank you, Ashley Lauren. What else
- 22:23Speaker 1: we got? I apologize if I screw up the pronunciation
- 22:26Speaker 1: of your name here, but I got Janette vecki Arelli.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I think that's right. I think that's right.
- 22:33Speaker 1: It says very simply put, I love your podcast so much.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I come home from hikes and I constantly quote did
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know? To my husband? Love that? Thanks Janette. That
- 22:43Speaker 1: makes me happy, all right? This one is from the
- 22:48Speaker 1: Carpet beat Nicks on Instagram. Hate Jake. I'd love it
- 22:51Speaker 1: if shift he could interview David Rawlings how he shreds
- 22:54Speaker 1: on an acoustic as wild. But I'd also be curious
- 22:56Speaker 1: how he plays with Gillian Welsh's voice or Gillian Welsch.
- 22:59Speaker 1: I never know which one it is. Also, what are
- 23:01Speaker 1: the numbers you give on your callers and emailers? The
- 23:04Speaker 1: numbers the numbers you give on your callers and emailers? Well,
- 23:09Speaker 1: there's six, one, seven, nine, oh, six six six three eight,
- 23:11Speaker 1: that's how you call it. As for David Rawlings, that's
- 23:15Speaker 1: an incredible suggestion for shred was shifty. I saw David
- 23:18Speaker 1: Rawlings and Gillian Slash Gillian Welch back and I don't know,
- 23:25Speaker 1: maybe it was like four five in Boston, and my goodness,
- 23:32Speaker 1: were they good and he was especially good. The guy's
- 23:35Speaker 1: a monster guitar player, all right, at disgrace lampod that's
- 23:40Speaker 1: how you get in touching me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook
- 23:42Speaker 1: and TikTok six one seven nine six six six three eight,
- 23:45Speaker 1: leave a voicemail on a text. I'm gonna take a
- 23:47Speaker 1: quick break. I'll be back in a second with some recommendations.
- 24:03Speaker 1: All right, the recommendations part. This is the recommendation's part,
- 24:07Speaker 1: the part where we recommend the things that need recommending,
- 24:09Speaker 1: The recommendations part. Guys, all right, what I'm watching? Yes,
- 24:14Speaker 1: the movie recommendations part is now in the Badlands Bonus
- 24:16Speaker 1: Rap Party episode. However, it is here in the after
- 24:19Speaker 1: Party where we still dig into music related video content,
- 24:21Speaker 1: including documentaries and biopicks. In on that I was, you know,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I was home alone over the weekend whilst with my kids,
- 24:27Speaker 1: but my wife was away, so you know, my wife's
- 24:31Speaker 1: not watching TV with me. I'm kind of just like cruising.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just surfing. I'm just watching ten minutes
- 24:38Speaker 1: of this, twenty minutes of that, half an hour, that
- 24:41Speaker 1: hour of that stand up way too late. Caught a
- 24:44Speaker 1: little bit of coal miner's daughter over the weekend that
- 24:46Speaker 1: was just on. I can't remember what network it was on.
- 24:49Speaker 1: For those of you who don't know this movie, I
- 24:51Speaker 1: feel like there are so many music biopics that get
- 24:53Speaker 1: mentioned and this one seldomly is mentioned as one of
- 24:56Speaker 1: the best, and I think it might be the best
- 24:59Speaker 1: music biopick out there. It's I didn't watch the whole
- 25:02Speaker 1: thing again, so I don't know. I can't confidently say that,
- 25:05Speaker 1: but it's the story of Loretta Lynn. Sissy Spasic plays
- 25:08Speaker 1: Loretta Lynn. Levon Helm from the band plays their dad.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It's just what I love about this movie is that
- 25:16Speaker 1: it is a hardcore reality check against the other biopicks
- 25:20Speaker 1: out there. Without giving anything away, it's raw, it's real,
- 25:25Speaker 1: there's a grit to it. I believe it's early eighties.
- 25:30Speaker 1: It feels seventies though, and it's just it's not yet
- 25:35Speaker 1: the sort of Hollywood music biopick industry machine had not
- 25:41Speaker 1: yet created this mold for these types of movies, So
- 25:46Speaker 1: this one kind of exists, existed on its own for
- 25:48Speaker 1: a while and could afford to be grittier and raw
- 25:52Speaker 1: and more raw and real. And it's just tremendous and
- 25:55Speaker 1: it's a great Lorettelin's story in and of itself is fantastic,
- 25:59Speaker 1: and I do a great job putting it on the screen.
- 26:01Speaker 1: So I highly recommend cole Miners daughter. If you haven't
- 26:03Speaker 1: seen it, highly recommend watching it again. If you have
- 26:06Speaker 1: seen it, just you know, caught my eye over the weekend,
- 26:09Speaker 1: figured it worth mentioning what I'm listening to. I don't
- 26:13Speaker 1: know why, Maybe because the weather's getting warmer, maybe because
- 26:16Speaker 1: I've been working out more and I need this for
- 26:18Speaker 1: the workouts. But I've been listening to a ton of
- 26:20Speaker 1: Hohosker Doo, just all of it, really, the entire catalog,
- 26:25Speaker 1: even the sad stuff. Something about it I find to
- 26:28Speaker 1: be incredibly motivating. But still, there's so many great Huskar
- 26:33Speaker 1: Dow records. Zen Arcade is one of not just my
- 26:36Speaker 1: favorite Husker Doo albums, but one of my favorite double
- 26:39Speaker 1: albums of all time. People will argue that there's filler
- 26:43Speaker 1: on it, but I think even the so called filler
- 26:45Speaker 1: is fantastic on this album. The grant Heart songs on
- 26:48Speaker 1: this record are fucking great. Turn on the News, oh
- 26:51Speaker 1: my God, but also Flip your wig, New Day Rising.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Just it's this constant. It's banger after banger after banger,
- 27:00Speaker 1: and the production is so fucking shitty and eighties and
- 27:04Speaker 1: crappy eighties punk. I love it. I love it so
- 27:07Speaker 1: much and I've rediscovered it. And if there are people
- 27:11Speaker 1: out there are who are into this type of music
- 27:13Speaker 1: but have not gotten into Whoskardo for whatever reason, because
- 27:17Speaker 1: because they weren't Black Flag, because because they weren't the
- 27:20Speaker 1: sex Pistols, they weren't the Pixies. Who fucking cares? They
- 27:23Speaker 1: are their own thing, and just they are tremendous. So
- 27:27Speaker 1: you know, if you got questions on where to start
- 27:28Speaker 1: with Whoskardo, hit me up, ask me. I will point
- 27:31Speaker 1: you in the right direction. Shit, if I get enough
- 27:33Speaker 1: incoming on this, I'll even make my own mix, my
- 27:36Speaker 1: entry level correspondence course, hohoskerdo mix for you folks out there.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 27:43Speaker 1: at disgrace lampod. I've also been listening to a ton
- 27:47Speaker 1: of Fiddler, so much so that I had about a
- 27:52Speaker 1: week ago, I had to forcibly stop myself from listening
- 27:55Speaker 1: to this band because their songs were so ingrained into
- 28:01Speaker 1: my my like wormholing into my brain. It's all I
- 28:05Speaker 1: could think about. Were these these fucking silly songs about
- 28:10Speaker 1: all about the same thing, getting completely fucked up in
- 28:13Speaker 1: the most juvenile, sort of early twenties, uh you know,
- 28:17Speaker 1: post teenage kind of way. This band, they're they're not
- 28:22Speaker 1: a new band by any means. They've been around for
- 28:25Speaker 1: a while, but and I've known about them for a
- 28:27Speaker 1: while and I and I've listened to them here and
- 28:29Speaker 1: there for a while. But recently I've just really dug
- 28:32Speaker 1: into this, this band. I saw a live clip on Instagram,
- 28:37Speaker 1: something popped up in my stories and it really took me,
- 28:39Speaker 1: captured me. So I just, you know, went into the
- 28:42Speaker 1: wormhole and I've yet to come out. I can't they
- 28:45Speaker 1: have this they have this Spotify, you know, Spotify does
- 28:49Speaker 1: this sort of like this is the band? You know,
- 28:50Speaker 1: It's like, you know, or what are thirty songs on
- 28:53Speaker 1: that band that they're supposed to be a comprehensive look
- 28:55Speaker 1: at the group. There's not There's not one bad fucking
- 28:58Speaker 1: song on the Spotify. This is Fiddler playlist. I mean it,
- 29:02Speaker 1: there's not one bad song. There's not one skip on it.
- 29:05Speaker 1: It's that good. But warning, if you're looking for variety,
- 29:09Speaker 1: this ain't your band. They do the ac DC thing,
- 29:12Speaker 1: it's like, or the Ramones thing. It's like, you know,
- 29:15Speaker 1: we do one thing and we do it really fucking well.
- 29:17Speaker 1: And that thing with regards to Fiddler is you know,
- 29:22Speaker 1: fast in your face, raw southern California slash modern punk,
- 29:32Speaker 1: and every single song is about getting fucked up in
- 29:34Speaker 1: your life, falling apart. So if you're into that kind
- 29:36Speaker 1: of thing, I highly recommend Fiddler. All right, my vintage
- 29:40Speaker 1: video watching over the weekend. Now, this is a direct
- 29:43Speaker 1: correlation to another topic we have going on here about
- 29:47Speaker 1: the weirdest collaborations. And I don't know if the find
- 29:52Speaker 1: folks at Meta and Instagram have figured out a way
- 29:56Speaker 1: to make the Instagram machines algorithm just sort of like
- 30:00Speaker 1: ump out of the phone through the air into my ears,
- 30:03Speaker 1: wrap itself around my brain, pull my interest out back
- 30:07Speaker 1: through my ears and into the phone, and maybe they're
- 30:10Speaker 1: listening to their course. They're listening. I don't know what
- 30:12Speaker 1: it was. But as we're sort of having this talk
- 30:15Speaker 1: about weird collaborations, this video pops up with Neil Young
- 30:20Speaker 1: and Devo playing together. One of those things where how
- 30:23Speaker 1: the fuck did I not know about this? This is
- 30:25Speaker 1: why I love the Internet more than this is the
- 30:28Speaker 1: main reason I love the Internet. There are these things
- 30:30Speaker 1: that have happened in music history. I've read so much
- 30:33Speaker 1: music history. It's shocking to me that when I come
- 30:36Speaker 1: across things like this that are right in my wheelhouse
- 30:39Speaker 1: that I did not know existed. I did not know
- 30:42Speaker 1: Neil Young and Devo played together, and it's incredible, as
- 30:48Speaker 1: you would expect, it's great. So if you know about
- 30:52Speaker 1: this already, congratulations and forgive me for boring you. But
- 30:55Speaker 1: if you do not know about this, you have to
- 30:57Speaker 1: search this out. I'm going to try to figure out
- 30:59Speaker 1: a way to post to someone Instagram. Highly recommend the
- 31:02Speaker 1: Neil Young Devo collaboration. Tremendous stuff. Again, I'm down for
- 31:09Speaker 1: this weird collaboration topic. You want to keep it going.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 31:13Speaker 1: for that and any other kind of music or music
- 31:16Speaker 1: video or music related content recommendations. You guys have six
