- 0:06One welcome back to another edition of the Justin Time
- 0:09podcast. I'm your host, Justin.
- 0:11As always, we've got Will here with us.
- 0:12It's always a good day when we got Will on.
- 0:15Oh, they far too kind, brother, Far too kind.
- 0:18How's it going? I'm.
- 0:19Doing fantastic. Another day of college football
- 0:22previews, brother. Yeah, we, we duty calls.
- 0:25We got to do. We got to do it.
- 0:27We got to do it and we got to let y'all know about.
- 0:31I don't know what to call these guys to be honest.
- 0:34You know, at one point they the Tigers, at one point they
- 0:38screamed War Eagle, which funny story had a Auburn fan tell us.
- 0:43I think it was last year, the year before that the story of
- 0:46the War Eagle. And just so I did get this, I'm
- 0:52going to look this up just so we Yeah, I don't believe this at
- 0:55all. Yeah, I don't believe Auburn.
- 0:57The website Auburn put up the story that the Auburn fan told
- 1:00us was something about this dude, I'm running off the
- 1:03battlefield with a wounded eagle to take care of it, and they
- 1:07called it a War Eagle. Look that this is very, I've
- 1:11never did it. Like they say the tradition
- 1:13dates back to then they know. Look, that's why the tradition
- 1:18dates back to an 1892 game against Georgia.
- 1:21Of course, according to the most popular legend, an elderly Civil
- 1:26War veteran brought his pet eagle to the game.
- 1:30The bird broke free, circled majestically above the playing
- 1:34field. This is Auburn mounted a
- 1:36game-winning drive and then tragically out on the field,
- 1:41elated fans began yelling War Eagle to spur on the team
- 1:45submitting the the phase, the phrase in school.
- 1:48Lord, that is a very fast acting story.
- 1:53I will tell you that. You know.
- 1:55Battle cry a greeting if. You believe that?
- 1:59If you believe that blindly, then I don't know what to tell
- 2:03you. Auburn is more if you believe
- 2:04that story. As Auburn fan, that's more of a
- 2:07cult than Texas A&L, which is. Hey, you got a close, You got a
- 2:11clip. I I just don't know what to tell
- 2:14you. Man, that is very comical.
- 2:18That is man, that that's that's an identity crotchet right
- 2:22there. I just, I wish I could really
- 2:23remember that story, but it was something along the lines of
- 2:26during a war that somebody found a wound, a soldiers found a
- 2:31wounded eagle and went into hiding and used the story of
- 2:35taking care of the eagle as his way to get out of war because he
- 2:38was a coward. No, that is something.
- 2:42And now they should they, you know, So who knows?
- 2:47OK, who knows? Let's go let folklore legend is
- 2:50what it is. Folklore legend, brother me.
- 2:54That's that's a whole fuck that is.
- 2:58I never do that like I always wondered, but never like found
- 3:01time to really look it up. You know what I mean?
- 3:03I appreciate you opening the floor for that.
- 3:06Boy, I don't. I'm not hating on Auburn because
- 3:09I really enjoy when we play. I really enjoy when we play.
- 3:13Those Gus Miles on days were really fun.
- 3:16You know, we had the bomb threat called in at LSU our freshman
- 3:19year. I was in a library studying for
- 3:22a test. It had to get my cousin to come
- 3:26pick me up on off the campus because I was living in a dorm
- 3:28and I didn't have a car at that point.
- 3:30It was in the shop, so I had to get my cousin to come pick me up
- 3:34from campus because they had the bomb threat called.
- 3:36I think that was Gene Chizik, who was the coach.
- 3:38That was before they hired Gusman Ozone.
- 3:40Yeah, I was. That was.
- 3:42So he's our first year of college.
- 3:44Yeah, that was Gene. Yeah, I was there.
- 3:45That was there. That was his last season there.
- 3:48He only stayed there like 4 years.
- 3:50And when we said he only stayed there, he got they got letting
- 3:53go and they got somebody else. But yeah, but they called the
- 3:58bomb threat in at the library. I believe it was the library.
- 4:02It was close enough to the my dorm where I couldn't go back in
- 4:05my dorm. I had to evacuate campus and all
- 4:09this. We played Auburn that week and
- 4:10all the stuff was all memes and stuff they came out with was
- 4:14Gene Shizik on the phone calling the cops, calling campus to make
- 4:17the bomb threat because he didn't want to play us.
- 4:20He knows crazy. Like, I mean, they we struggled
- 4:23that game. Yeah, it was like 12 to I could
- 4:26pull it up. It was like 12 to 10.
- 4:28It was the final. It was a.
- 4:30Very weird game. It's 1210, yes.
- 4:34Yeah, so you know, we've got the Affleck Kickoff Bowl for Auburn
- 4:40on September 5th. Yeah, against Baylor, which Dave
- 4:48Veranda, LSU guy who was on the hot seat.
- 4:53He is. I don't like saying that, but
- 4:54that's the reality. Yeah, and I don't know, does the
- 4:58coach coming out on the hot seat fire team up?
- 5:02Piss off the piss on the coach. Piss on.
- 5:04I didn't respond to the coach. But, you know, we've got a new
- 5:07coach at Auburn and this is his first game.
- 5:10Those are kind of tricky. I will say the game is in
- 5:14Atlanta, GA Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 2:30.
- 5:17So I imagine it's going to be a heavy, heavy lean Auburn fan
- 5:20base because it's closer. I think that makes.
- 5:23More of a home game for Auburn than it is for Baylor.
- 5:26Now it's not the planes, of course, but it's it's something.
- 5:30But you know, and I'm, I'm leaning towards Auburn for that
- 5:33one. Me too.
- 5:35Just because of the then we've got the kick off on the planes.
- 5:397 MIAs. You know, I appreciate Auburn
- 5:42for coming up with all of these names so far.
- 5:46I hope they have it for every game.
- 5:48You know, I hope they have it for every game because I enjoy
- 5:51it. I enjoyed it.
- 5:52Makes my job easy when we're coming up with these, talking
- 5:55about these games. But 63645, I mean, Southern Miss
- 5:58on the planes, I got to give it to Auburn.
- 6:01So we're two and I'm with you there.
- 6:03Yeah, here we go. New coach versus new coach.
- 6:08Man, goodness gracious already. You know, we don't play Florida
- 6:12this year so I haven't looked into them.
- 6:14It's on the planes. Auburn get you 3 and no start.
- 6:16Yeah, I lean towards Auburn. Yeah, Auburn versus Bandy
- 6:21Homecoming. The noon so game is still
- 6:24determined it's time yeah I'm going to lean Mandy Band is just
- 6:30not where it used to be I'm just.
- 6:33Yeah. And so, you know, band is one of
- 6:36those weird ones for me now that we talked about it.
- 6:38Yeah. Because I think a lot of their
- 6:40hype came from Pavia. Yeah.
- 6:44And his ability to run and be a Midget on the field to where
- 6:49nobody could see him under the offensive lineman.
- 6:52So that helped. So I don't know what they've got
- 6:54coming back this year. I'm still going to give this
- 6:56game to Bandy. That makes them three and one to
- 7:01close out September. You know, I find it funny that
- 7:04all these teams got beat by Bandy last year and they don't
- 7:07watch and use their eyeballs for recent history and they say
- 7:10Dandy's coming to town homecoming game.
- 7:13Yeah, and it's like it's not the it's not the same program.
- 7:18I mean, I'm not saying they're going with an addict, but it's
- 7:20it's not the same program even like going back to James
- 7:23Franklin, like he won back-to-back nine win games
- 7:26there. It's like that's the
- 7:27unbelievable culture job. But like, obviously, you know,
- 7:30take them to the next level. Exactly.
- 7:33OK, then. They start off October with
- 7:35Tennessee in Knoxville. I'm leaning Tennessee.
- 7:40Yeah. So that's three and three and
- 7:42two. That's their second, Yeah, No,
- 7:46that's their first away SEC game and 1st away game.
- 7:50I'm giving it to Tennessee. They go to Athens, I'm giving it
- 7:54to Georgia. So 3 and 3.
- 7:56Another 11 AM game for the LSU Tigers.
- 8:00The Tiger. Bowl the Tiger Bowl.
- 8:03I still think LSU's defense and Blaine Kippen's offense is going
- 8:08to come out and I've got LSU in that game.
- 8:11I know it's on the planes at 11:00 AM, but I got to give it
- 8:15to LSU. So what does that put them 3 or
- 8:184? I'm a good I'm.
- 8:19I agree with you with the point. Like they we are historically
- 8:24terrible in Dorner Stadium. Yeah.
- 8:27And I will say. This, yeah.
- 8:29I will say this, I think it's a close game, but I think LS us
- 8:32defense and a competent head coach this year.
- 8:36Yep. We win that game.
- 8:39It might be set 14 to 17, but I think we get them.
- 8:43You hit on the head like I I say they're not.
- 8:46We're not winning more than five points.
- 8:48Yeah. Because I don't see it right
- 8:50now, but it's because they they they're just they're just
- 8:53regards to the regime regards to what's going on with the
- 8:55program. Like they are terrible in that
- 8:58in that stadium, like historically and even in the
- 9:00wins. Like to be honest with you, I
- 9:02think the, you know, people always ask LSU fans like, you
- 9:06know, what's LSU biggest robbery or something like that?
- 9:09We just go out on a favorite matchup because a lot of that is
- 9:11generational base anyway. I think LSU and Auburn is like
- 9:14my favorite the year of the rival as far as like the team
- 9:19they play normally because they have such an incredible games.
- 9:22You go back to like, you know, even in the losses in in Auburn,
- 9:27like we had like a three trip stretch.
- 9:28We scored a grand total of 19 points.
- 9:31Yeah, and the 202-0406 game Grand Tour of 19 points.
- 9:35But, and I have a Auburn. What year was it?
- 9:39It was Brandon Harris's freshman year, everybody.
- 9:43Kept yelling. Everybody kept yelling at Les
- 9:46Miles to start Brandon Harris. Yes.
- 9:51And he was like, OK, bet I'm going to start him, but I'm
- 9:53going to start him against Auburn, who was like #1 and #2
- 9:56and number. They were top they were top five
- 9:59in the the. In the country and he said I'm
- 10:02going to start this kid at this game and I'm going to prove
- 10:04y'all wrong and that kid got beat up and he was never the
- 10:07same after that game. Listen, like even before the
- 10:11season I was on, that was the yellow newspaper staff.
- 10:14They had our predictions. Everybody get their predictions.
- 10:16I, I had us going nine and three that year.
- 10:18So the losses I had were Bama, Auburn, I think Ole Miss and
- 10:24like, so I was like, listen, I'm going to tell you all this.
- 10:27We even like a couple weeks before the game.
- 10:29That was my birthday. That was my only first birthday.
- 10:33We could they play on that Saturday.
- 10:34And like I said, listen, we're going to get crushed today.
- 10:37I'm probably I'm telling you, they're historically terrible in
- 10:40Jordan hair and you have a a a fresh recorder by making his
- 10:43first career start on the road in the hostile environment.
- 10:46I said listen, and I would say I was going to be shocked if we
- 10:50lost by a few. We we weren't going in.
- 10:51I knew that. But to to come away with, if we
- 10:54were to come away with a deficit under 20 points, I've been a
- 10:57miracle and I'm losing. What was that 40?
- 11:01I can pull it up for you 41 to 7.
- 11:03Yeah, it was a lot too little and it destroyed that kid.
- 11:07To me, that kid was the best quarterback we had on that team.
- 11:09But the coaching staff, Les Miles just is, was one of those
- 11:13coaches. He refused to change the way in
- 11:16a debt for what the game was. And that's why, in my opinion,
- 11:21he had the trouble he had at the end of his career because he was
- 11:27always a heavy offensive line with a run game and then a good
- 11:32running back, and that's all he needed.
- 11:33He didn't worry about a quarterback that could throw the
- 11:35ball. Right.
- 11:37And and it like when you look at his his background, I mean he he
- 11:40played, he was a he played at Michigan, the both Shambach.
- 11:43So I understand like that that era of football, he has he had a
- 11:48lot of early success. But we, like you said, we don't
- 11:51evolve. Listen and the coach you got to
- 11:53evolve. That's like the biggest trait of
- 11:55coach. Get one of the biggest traits of
- 11:57coaches needs to have in game adjustments and then liability
- 12:00just to adapt to your playing style.
- 12:03And Speaking of Les Miles and Auburn, Les Miles got fired
- 12:06after an Auburn game. That's right.
- 12:09And I will say this about Les Miles as much as he was a run
- 12:12heavy, don't get a quarterback that can spread the ball out
- 12:15type of guy, it was amazing to me how many great receivers we
- 12:20had come through that program at that time.
- 12:23It is out man. Listen I I think about this so
- 12:25off I was like in in the tudent 10s.
- 12:28I say, listen, if I had a son like in the 20 tens or like he
- 12:32was a football, like a big time recruit, like and I'm my LS,
- 12:36mind you, I'm I'm an LSU live from that's my, I'm my model.
- 12:39I said listen, if you are a quarterback, son, do not go to
- 12:43LSU. And then?
- 12:45I know any circumstance. We get rid of Les Miles after an
- 12:49Auburn gang where to this day I'm not sure if they handled
- 12:55that right. I think that play got off to win
- 12:59it. Looking back at it, I'm glad it
- 13:03didn't because we I don't know if we would have got rid of less
- 13:06miles ever if that play didn't go the way we did.
- 13:11It's kind of like looking at Brian Kelly and how he got
- 13:16canned after losing it, getting it butt kicked to Texas A and MI
- 13:20Hate that because I really hate A&M and their cult they have
- 13:24over there. But without that, our football
- 13:28program would still be in a circle in a toilet.
- 13:30Bow man, it's it's it's it's crazy how like certain like
- 13:35moments shift like the trajectory of a program and when
- 13:39you especially when you look back on it.
- 13:41But yeah, it was that was one of those things that was like,
- 13:43that's what didn't mean because it's like it's not just that
- 13:46players. There's so much that happens
- 13:48before that game that we that season and like, he he he did
- 13:53not do himself any favors. Not enough of the but like going
- 13:57back to the schedule. Yeah.
- 13:59So after LSU, so 3 or 4, they dropped the this their fourth
- 14:03drop in a row. Yeah, and we've got them that
- 14:07bought Hemingway. You know what?
- 14:10I'm going. To be nice, I'm going to be
- 14:12nice, I'm going to give it to. Auburn, man, I don't think 44.
- 14:21I don't think all the height that old piss is getting right
- 14:24now is worth it for them because they're all saying, oh this is
- 14:30the same team from last year saying Co it's not Your whole
- 14:34offensive coaching staff went to Baton Rouge and LSU.
- 14:38It's not the same coaching staff.
- 14:39So stop saying it. You've got Trinidad.
- 14:43But you know what made Trinidad? Trinidad, in my opinion, was a
- 14:47competent offensive coach who can call the place to get his
- 14:49playmaker in a position. Yeah.
- 14:52You don't have that this year. Auburn's going in there at an
- 14:56early game at Bob Hemingway and it's going to beat you on
- 15:00Halloween night. It's going to be it's.
- 15:03Going. To be another tiger butt kicking
- 15:07Ole Miss on Halloween night. Goodness, I hope most like I I
- 15:12would like to say I agree, but I mean, listen, I I'm I got them
- 15:16dropping, especially since it's on the road.
- 15:19I respect that I got no I would I.
- 15:24I might be the I might be the only guy on the when they
- 15:26looking at your schedule that looks at old pissed and says
- 15:29they're going to drop to Auburn, they're going to drop the
- 15:31Mississippi. But but you know, hey, it is
- 15:38what it is. Arkansas is their next game for
- 15:43Military Appreciation Day. You got to show up for the
- 15:47truth. I got Auburn in the wind.
- 15:48I got Auburn in the wind. I don't know if Arkansas can
- 15:51handle the pressure. That's another first year coach.
- 15:54Yeah. You know, Yeah, I think we got a
- 16:00drop. We drop.
- 16:00We gave both gave them a loss last week, last episode.
- 16:05Yeah, for this one because going into starting Vegas is hard to
- 16:09play in with those cowbells. Yeah.
- 16:11And we just go skip the rental win.
- 16:13And in the season on the loss in Bryan Denny Stadium.
- 16:17Yeah, but you know, that game was wild.
- 16:21That that is true. I mean, they've had their epic
- 16:23finishes. King 6 of course I can see.
- 16:27Them, if I think back to it, Alabama, Auburn, I think it was
- 16:32Nick Saban's last year. They barely escaped the Honor
- 16:36Bowl. They barely escaped the Iron
- 16:37Bowl, right? You know, there's iron bows
- 16:40where Auburn was had a losing season, you know, and they came
- 16:45out and they beat Bama. It's just a weird one.
- 16:50That's another game that that they always used to play on on
- 16:53Fridays that I miss. Yeah.
- 16:56Because Black Friday, if you don't go shopping, there's
- 16:58nothing for you to do. You know, it used to be you sit
- 17:01at home and Thanksgiving weekend and you ate leftovers.
- 17:04And if it was a home game you went to and you had tickets, you
- 17:07went to the home game. If not, you ate your
- 17:09Thanksgiving leftovers, you Turkey legs and all that stuff.
- 17:12And you suck there and watch college football.
- 17:14But it was worth it. College football games.
- 17:17It wasn't just these, you know, we couldn't figure out a time to
- 17:21put these teams, so we put them on a Friday, you know?
- 17:23But according to Hypo, you know Auburn's new coach got a plan.
- 17:29I saw that. He's got a clear plan and you
- 17:32know he might. So he's just, he's excited for
- 17:35Alex, like other guys we found on our staff who've been able to
- 17:38go on and be a head coach like Jeff, Jeff Libby inside of this
- 17:42league and Jerry Meck and Kenneth Kennesaw.
- 17:45So just let me say Alex has done a really good job, did a great
- 17:49job flipping around his previous stop.
- 17:51He's smart. He's got a clear plan of what he
- 17:53wants to accomplish and he's going to demand it from the
- 17:56people around him. So you got to vote of now Grant
- 17:58is a former assistant. I mean, but you got to vote of
- 18:00confidence on the list. I mean, it's it's quoted.
- 18:04So they all do to it. For me, what?
- 18:07Here's where his success and his failure hinges to me.
- 18:10If Auburn fans can look at it and realize we're not the top of
- 18:16the barrel like we think we are, yeah, we got to get this guy at
- 18:19least two or three years to fix the message that we were in.
- 18:23You know, Now I'll tell you what, if he turns around and
- 18:25upsets Alabama in Tuscaloosa, he's got a job for at least
- 18:30another 5-10 years. That's just how it is.
- 18:37You know, they'll give you a chance when you beat Alabama.
- 18:39But I think for Auburn fans, what they got to realize is they
- 18:43had a mess going on over there and it's not going to come in
- 18:48and it's not going to turn around as quick as you think it
- 18:51is. LSU was in a little bit of
- 18:52different position when we fired Brian Kelly.
- 18:56We had a team or what resembled A-Team.
- 19:00We were just missing a few key pieces and we went out there and
- 19:03we got it like we were missing the offensive coordinator for
- 19:061A, competent head coach for another one.
- 19:09But player wise, what we were lacking is a quarterback room
- 19:13and he went out and got 3 transfer quarterbacks.
- 19:15Then it's bringing in five story, 5, four-star recruited
- 19:19quarterback. You know, our quarterback room
- 19:22is stacked. It's not going to be like last
- 19:23year if Levitt goes down. We've got it one or two guys
- 19:26behind tonight again, automatically come in and take
- 19:29reps, you know, but Auburn fans are just going to have to be
- 19:33patient. You know, we're looking at this
- 19:35and saying all of this stuff, but you know, just because we
- 19:37give you all outlook, we're not Auburn fans.
- 19:41You know, just because we give you an outlook doesn't mean it's
- 19:46set in stone. You might actually come out and
- 19:50I'll give y'all ceiling y'all at 8 win team and floor y'all at
- 19:53five win team. Yeah.
- 19:54So like, yeah, I'm, I'm like that.
- 19:57I have them 5:00 and 7:00. Yeah, I've got them 6:00 and
- 20:006:00 just because that old piss, right, you know?
- 20:04But you know, we talked about favorite rivalries and you said
- 20:07yours was Auburn. We don't play them this year,
- 20:10but mine is Florida. It's it's always with it's me in
- 20:13Florida. Florida is up there as well.
- 20:16And that's like the two. I'm a little upset that they
- 20:19took Florida off of my schedule. Because it's the annual
- 20:21interconference opponent. But I know it's not.
- 20:24They don't do it like that anymore.
- 20:26I want my revenge from well we got our revenge last year when
- 20:29he threw 5 picks and we still barely won.
- 20:32That should have been a red flag game for us.
- 20:34I, I can't think of that this early today.
- 20:36I said man, listen, you get 5 takeaways and you still only win
- 20:40the game by 10 points I mean. I was like, that's not just the
- 20:43red, that's not just the red flag, that's a Crimson red flag.
- 20:49But you know, to me it was always a heated rivalry when we
- 20:54were good in that they had Tebow and stuff and they were gone and
- 20:58we beat him in O 7. That was always a heated
- 21:01rivalry. And then I remember one game
- 21:04when we were in college, I think it was in 20, the fall of 2013
- 21:08or maybe the fall of 14. It was a day game at Ellis.
- 21:13It was a day game against them and the event staff guy that was
- 21:17out there, you know, the ushers that show you, you know said
- 21:22I've been doing this for 20 something years and this is the
- 21:25softest I've ever seen any about any of these teams play.
- 21:30He said the a blind man used to be able to go to LSU Florida
- 21:33game and can he know the game is going on by the hits and that
- 21:39was soft. But to me, what really did it
- 21:42in, I think it was 16 because that was our coach in my 1 about
- 21:47Mike, the Tigers died and they came in, it was because of a
- 21:50hurricane. It got moved to Death Valley and
- 21:52it was a day game. They came in with a cat skeleton
- 21:55in Mardi Gras beads and paraded it around our stadium.
- 22:01And that's what set in for the Florida hate for me.
- 22:03And the Florida hate and the A&M hate are two different kind of
- 22:07hates. Like for A and MI, just hate
- 22:11your football team in your school.
- 22:14You know, the Florida Gators. I just have a very deep hatred
- 22:22for if you think your team was in the right to run a cat
- 22:28skeleton up. I mean, I got to fit them in
- 22:30because we don't play them this year.
- 22:32Yeah, I remember like I remember years ago, like right before the
- 22:35Tony, the the 2007 game, that legendary game, man.
- 22:38Oh my gosh. Like we had roasted, somebody
- 22:41had roasted like a Gator. That was the craziest thing I
- 22:44had seen. And they said they found Tim
- 22:46Tebow's number. They got Tim.
- 22:48Tebow's phone number. And sent them out to the LSU fan
- 22:55base and I think they called him and he had to change his number.
- 23:00That's that is crazy like that and like the, the Gator being
- 23:04roasted outlook. That's the craziest thing I saw
- 23:06at that point. And I remember like it was
- 23:07because it was on the news. They said like when Alabama we
- 23:10we, we will roast an elephant. Yeah, I remember our freshman
- 23:16year for Alabama. You know what?
- 23:18I'll tell this story the next podcast because, spoiler alert,
- 23:22the next one's Alabama. I'll say this to the next one.
- 23:25Yeah, do that good. Auburn.
- 23:29I just remember Leonard Fournette running over.
- 23:31People, that's my biggest. My biggest thing that Auburn and
- 23:36Ole Miss was you think about those games, Billy Cannon for
- 23:43Ole Miss, the Halloween run was legendary.
- 23:47Yeah. The next one was the Ole Miss
- 23:50players jumping over Leonard Fournette trying to get him and
- 23:55him just trucking them. Yeah.
- 23:58Then Leonard Fournette just running all over Auburn was just
- 24:01glorious. Because I think we were, they
- 24:04were ranked like #3 or something.
- 24:07They were ranked top ten. I think that was that year.
- 24:10And they came in and they hadn't wanted Death Valley in years and
- 24:16they thought they were going to come in and the street stayed
- 24:19alive. And I don't think they beat us
- 24:22until that 2020 season that no. So it was. 2021 they beat us
- 24:28and. That was like their first win.
- 24:30There was a 22. One was their first win here
- 24:33since like 99. I was like, yeah, we have like
- 24:37those long droughts in. I was like, you know, that's
- 24:39another telltale sign that a coach's tenure about the wrap
- 24:42up. Yeah.
- 24:43So. But yeah, so I got him 6:00 and
- 24:506:00. You got him five and seven.
- 24:52Yeah, I think the future is bright at Auburn, much more
- 24:55brighter than the future of Mississippi State, but we can
- 25:00see how that goes. Remember to subscribe, like,
