- 0:58things? What do I want? Yes? All right? Hi? Well
- 1:03hello, welcome to book Watchers. Yeah, you know who we are.
- 1:07You know who we are. And those of you who don't, well,
- 1:11have you been? Yeah? Catchup? Get on our level, shit,
- 1:17get on our level. Yeah, and welcome back to today's episode of book
- 1:23Watchers. Today will not only be the we're gonna not only be reviewing the
- 1:30final installment of Bear Ardor and the Kid series, but this will actually be
- 1:36our last recorded episode for the year of twenty twenty three. Well, honestly,
- 1:41when this episode comes out, it's gonna be probably twenty twenty four,
- 1:45because there are several episodes in the queue before this one. There's like true,
- 1:52yeah, but I do future note future Devin take this part out at
- 1:56the end, though, I do wanna do like a Christmas, merry Christmas
- 2:06thing. We can put on the episode put on for the week for the
- 2:07week before Christmas or whatever. I haven't decided which one because I just now
- 2:12this past last week was the what episode was that? Last week was the
- 2:21Heart. I just finished the Wolf Song the Green Creek series last week,
- 2:24so this week I still have the Drifts. Huh? Did you did you
- 2:30cry as much as I did when you read the letter the final at the
- 2:35end of book four? Oh? I didn't read them, I said,
- 2:38I posted the episodes we did for them. Oh, okay, okay,
- 2:43never mind. I thought you actually were finished. I want to did you
- 2:47did you cry as much as I did? No? Because let me tell
- 2:51you something. When I I said this in the episode, but like that
- 2:53episode, but when I read that that letter, I cried. I cried.
- 3:00It's on my list, but now I'm not gotten it. I just
- 3:01posted those episodes, and then I still have the Drifts three books and then
- 3:07the fairy Tale. I think next week is going to be fairy Tale,
- 3:13and then we'll do then I'll post the Sorry, now this week will be
- 3:16fairy Tale, and then the next three weeks will be the Drifts serious.
- 3:23And we did those. We did those in February. February. Yeah,
- 3:28we recorded them like we recorded them earlier in the year, and you're just
- 3:30not posting them. Drifts was in June. But yes, yes, yes,
- 3:36it was June. I haven't got I haven't gotten around the post,
- 3:38and I kept forgetting about them, and I'm like, I want to save
- 3:40them because every time something would come up and we post an episode beforehand,
- 3:45and I'm like, I want to post these episodes together. So I haven't
- 3:47gotten around doing that. So now they will huh. Yeah, I'm not
- 3:54going to lead them again. Oh my god, I told I told them
- 3:58the story about the God the Salem's Salem's Lot. I just didn't download it
- 4:08and then it got deleted and we're like, we're not talking about it again.
- 4:12Well, to be fair, they're not missing much. Yeah. Yeah,
- 4:15honestly that book was boring. But yeah, next week will be fairy
- 4:20Tale, and then the weeks after that would be the Drifts D and D
- 4:24series, and then after that that's when Bear Oder and the Kid will start,
- 4:29but that will be in January, so we'll come back to recording.
- 4:33Actually, yeah, when we come back to recording in January, the next
- 4:36couple of those couple of weeks will probably just be books I've read. We'll
- 4:41have a month of me but we'll do some some Christmas thing at the end
- 4:46because that'll be the fairy Tale episode. Anyway, continue continue Before we continue
- 4:53a little off topic here, Godzilla minus one has officially passed Oppenheimer as a
- 4:59high rated blockbuster film of twenty twenty three. Yes, at the time of
- 5:03the recording. Yep, oh you're gonna leave this in. You're gonna leave
- 5:09us in? Yes? Why not? Why not? A coeave. It's
- 5:13part of why not? Yeah, we cool, cool, cool, because
- 5:15we stand, we stand Godzilla here we stand. Oh, oh, we
- 5:17stand. I mean expect at some point in the new year the book on
- 5:24Godzilla and Godzilla raids again, like oh yeah, oh shit, we don't
- 5:30have to I mean, yeah, of course, because of course, because
- 5:33ladies. At the time it's recording ladies and gentlemen. I'm currently halfway through
- 5:38book three of the Wheel of Time. There are fourteen books in this series,
- 5:43and I don't like pausing in between. I don't like pausing between books
- 5:46to read like a book outside of the series. I just power through them.
- 5:51And these books are taking me forever because they're monsters, high fantasies.
- 5:56Yeah they're month. They're not that big, okay, well big, but
- 6:00they're not that big of a read. But they're high fantasy and high think
- 6:02about high fantasy books is that you really have to really like you have to
- 6:09get into the mindset of like the way that the the characters in the book
- 6:15is written. Yeah, all right, so they're not gonna be there.
- 6:19They're not going to be there's not gonna be dialogue in uh, written in
- 6:27a way that we would like in a common way that we would understand.
- 6:30It's written in a way that makes sense for these characters in the book,
- 6:32like the their dialogue, you know, the references. All right, So
- 6:36you have to really like get into this mindset of like, Okay, something
- 6:40significant happened, like some person like one character in book one mentions like off
- 6:45handedly mentioned something like, for example, in book one, the horn of
- 6:53there's this this artifact called the Horne of Valier, and the Horne of Valier
- 6:58is the centerpiece of book two, but they casually mention it offhand in the
- 7:01first book. And I'm like, huh, that's so. So he's planting
- 7:06seeds early. Yeah, Oh yeah, dude, there's there are like seeds
- 7:12of what's gonna happen late like like ten books down the line, being referenced
- 7:18in book one and two already, and he's not joking that that there is
- 7:23like fourteen books long. Hello. The main character Rand supposed to have three
- 7:29wives, but he but that doesn't get revealed until like later, later,
- 7:32later, later, but one character has the ability to see the future,
- 7:35and she's like, huh, you're gonna have three wives? Oh god,
- 7:40well she don't. She doesn't tell him specifically, she tells one of his
- 7:45future wives. He's she's she's like, huh, you're gonna end up sharing
- 7:48Rand with two other people and and she's like and she's like, nah,
- 7:58bitch nah. But yeah, he's working on that. I'm working on a
- 8:01bunch of little books because uh, when we come obviously when the record,
- 8:05when this recording goes up, they've already been done probably, but hopefully I'll
- 8:11be done by it. I'll be done with that just this one book three,
- 8:15but oh I hope so, but I'll be doing a bunch of books.
- 8:20It's gonna probably take me months to read the whole series, because it
- 8:22took me like the better part of a month to read the first two.
- 8:28I'm not a fast reader, so don't come at me. Damn. And
- 8:33my eyes got into audiobooks, so y'all best be ready. I got some
- 8:37books to talk about soon, and I also want to get into the freaking
- 8:43oh God I have. I have the Chronicles of Narnia, and the audiobook
- 8:50is like it comes to a pack of all seven of them, and I'm
- 8:54like, so I get at some point I'm gonna talk about the Chronicles of
- 8:58Narnia that series there A Yeah, that's right, that's right, because there's
- 9:09like a like there's before the Chronicles and before The Lion, the Witch and
- 9:13the Wardrobe. There's a book before that one. So the so the Lion,
- 9:16the Witch and the Wardrobe isn't the actual first Yeah, and the story
- 9:20there's another one, and that's actually talks about the origin of the White Witch
- 9:26and how she came to Narnia and how even Narnia was created by Aslain.
- 9:31Yeah. And then after the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, there
- 9:35was a book in between The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince
- 9:41Caspian. Yeah, which that one is more of like like I felt like
- 9:48that that one was more of like a sidebook because it wasn't it wasn't even
- 9:52a mate dealing with one of the main characters. I was just talking about
- 9:56like some of the stuff that went on that happened while uh, the those
- 10:01four kids were Narnia and ruling over everything. Mm hmm. And then after
- 10:07Prince Caspian, there was another book with just Caspian, uh, and I
- 10:16think, like, uh, Casian, I think it was just going to
- 10:22be Caspian, and I think, uh, the two youngest kids come back
- 10:28to Narnia one more time, and then there's Voyage at the Dawn Treader,
- 10:31and then after that there's another another book. Honestly, I read those books
- 10:39so long ago I can't I can't remember anymore. And then there's the very
- 10:43last one that Fox with people still to this day we who spoiler alert all
- 10:56of them all but one one does not die. I might cut this part.
- 11:03Susan doesn't die. She's not there. Yeah, oh I think she
- 11:11did die. Mm hmm. I thought no, No, she was the
- 11:16only one that was not there. Everyone else died, and well she dies.
- 11:22She will eventually show up because like, basically, because the whole thing
- 11:24about the Chronicles of Narnia is that it's like an allegory of like it's an
- 11:31allegory for the Bible, things like you know, the creation of the world.
- 11:37Coming up, Messiah all these different things, and then at the very
- 11:43end we're talking about armageddon, but it's not like as violent or as vicious
- 11:46as it was and like as it is in the Bible, but it kind
- 11:54of talks it really references like how like it's supposed to be in the Bible,
- 12:00like whenever, like the rapture and things like that, and uh,
- 12:05you know how everybody in Narnia except for like some dwarfs go to basically go
- 12:09to heaven and yeah, yeah, so yeah, but we're not here to
- 12:22talk about We're not here to talk about that book, at least not yet.
- 12:26We will, we will eventually, but for right now, we are
- 12:31going to be talking about the final book and the Bear Otter and the Kid
- 12:35series. This is called The Long, the Long and Winding Road. So
- 12:43I'll be totally honest with you guys. The reason why de Devin enough.
- 12:46Usually we we we fuck around, yeah, in a lot of episodes,
- 12:52but this one I kind of I did a little bit more because this book
- 12:56is actually we're I'm probably gonna end up skimming through the first half of the
- 12:58book because the first half of the book is literally more of a recap from
- 13:03Bear's perspective, on what happened during the events of the previous book because of
- 13:11the previous book, Who We Are, that was from the perspective of his
- 13:16younger I'm sorry, the not Who We Are, that's book too, uh,
- 13:20The Art of Breathing. Book three, The Art of Breathing was from
- 13:24the perspective of his younger brother, Tyson McKenna or the kid, yeah talking,
- 13:31And it was that focus on his struggles like his own. It was
- 13:35his own coming of age story, focused on his struggles with drug addiction,
- 13:39him coming to terms with his affections for his older best friend Dominic, and
- 13:48how they how their relationship begins. Well, this book, The Long Winding
- 13:52Road, is pretty much like it's it's a closer. This is definitely this
- 13:58book was definitely written to be like a closing statement. It's closing out everything.
- 14:05There's a lot of time skips and you know, it just it's also
- 14:09showing how Bear and Otter Uh are really beginning to start their lives together because
- 14:20now that the kid is out of the house, they're finally able to start
- 14:22making decisions for themselves because a lot of a lot well they've always made decisions.
- 14:28I'm sorry. They may phrase that they've always made decisions for themselves.
- 14:33But the thing is is that they had to really live their lives with the
- 14:39kid as their focus. They had to make sure they did everything they could
- 14:41to make sure their kid had a good home because you know, of course,
- 14:46first when this whole story started, it was about making sure that Bear
- 14:52got legal custody of kid, made sure and then also later made they were
- 14:56focused on getting the kid to help, the psychological help he needed, getting
- 15:03weaned off of his drug addiction, and making sure he's set for college.
- 15:05And he did everything. He did all of that, and now in this
- 15:09book, the kid, while he still struggles with his own personal stuff,
- 15:13he's now doing. He's in a much better place. He is living.
- 15:16He is in the process of dating Dominic. And let me tell you something
- 15:22about Dominic. Dominic is cute. He's cute as fuck. Because kids immediately
- 15:28set some boundaries with dom He still wanted to live at home with Bear and
- 15:33Otter. Uh. He wanted because he wanted to work on building their relationship
- 15:39first before they move to the next step and like move in together. But
- 15:41the thing is, dom he's already ready. He's already ready. He's like
- 15:46he knows what he wants. He wants the kid to move in with him.
- 15:48Right, So while the kid is still making up his mind and still
- 15:50wanting to work on the relationship, Dom is like sneakily like taking stuff from
- 15:54the kid's room and move and moving it to his mouse. So like little
- 15:58things at first, right, like little things he want that the kid wouldn't
- 16:02miss or really wouldn't notice that they're gone. But then it escalated. It
- 16:06got to the point where Bear caught Dom trying to move the kid's desk out
- 16:11of his house and into his own house, which was hilarious, which I
- 16:15thought was hilarious, Like, sir, you're a police officer, but you're
- 16:19like, I mean, it's not theft really because kid practically lives at Dom's
- 16:26house at that point. Yeah, but yeah, he knew what he wants.
- 16:30He knows what he wants. But so, as I said, this
- 16:37is the first half of the book is from is retelling the story from book
- 16:41three from Bear's perspective, him discovering the kid's drug addiction and him in honor
- 16:48really cracking down the kid confiscating all of the like any kind of pills that
- 16:55they could find from him. Basically putting him on lockdown, making sure he
- 16:57goes to see his therapist more regularly, leaning him off, leaning him off
- 17:03the drugs, and trying to help him get back to the place he needs
- 17:08to be in order to succeed in school. And even like some of the
- 17:14things that Baron and Otter fucked up on, like since the kid at the
- 17:19time had cut out Dominic because he couldn't really handle the fact that Dom was
- 17:26married and was basically living his life without the kid he cut he basically cut
- 17:33uh Dom off. But bear in honor, they kept in contact with Dom
- 17:40because they still cared about Dom and they still thought of him as family,
- 17:44and they knew that Dom had had a kid, but they they held off
- 17:48on telling, on telling the kid just because he was in a very fragile
- 17:51mental state at the time. But then then and then then time came for
- 17:56them to go back to Green Creek, I'm sorry, not Green Creek,
- 18:00Seafair there, go back to Seafair, And when they get there, they
- 18:04totally forgot to mention the kid, like, oh, yeah, by the
- 18:07way, your best friend, your bff forever has a kid. Now,
- 18:10Oh so he got the kid finds so the kid finds out, and while
- 18:15he takes it, he actually takes that very very well. He he's shocked,
- 18:19of course to find out that his best friend has a kid now,
- 18:23but he was really mad at Bear. So Bear had to really like not
- 18:29only work on earning the kid's forgiveness, but also he had to give the
- 18:33kid a reality check too. Yeah, because the thing is is that while
- 18:40much of their lives had revolved around the kid to ensure his well being and
- 18:45everything, now that the kid is an adult, it's time for Bear and
- 18:48Order to live their life. And kid was more or less upset when he
- 18:53found out that Bear and Otter were making plans without him, without his without
- 19:00really talking to him about what they're gonna do for their futures and everything like
- 19:04that. And Bear had to really put it like put it to him straight.
- 19:08Listen, we love you, We're always gonna be there, but it's
- 19:12time for Bear, It's time for Honor and me to live our lives.
- 19:18We've done our part. We made sure that you, we made sure that
- 19:21you were taken care of, and we did Yeah, there was there.
- 19:25It was a bumpy road, but we got there and now it's time for
- 19:32us to live our lives and the biggest decision they made was that the two
- 19:36of them had decided that they wanted kids. Now, Honor knew from the
- 19:40beginning he wanted kids, but Bear he wasn't really ready for that. And
- 19:45for the better part of like they're at this point, they've been together for
- 19:51like about ten years now, mm, Bear was really like juggling with that
- 19:56decision and then finally decides, let's do it. But the thing is,
- 20:03even though he made the decision, we're gonna do it together, like we're
- 20:04gonna have We're gonna we're gonna work on figuring out how we're gonna have kids.
- 20:14Because Otter had already thought it out and he got he put together a
- 20:19portfolio, if you will, basically like different options for their conception, so
- 20:29they could either go through a they could either adopt, or they could use
- 20:34currocate surrogate, and Otter had even done some research on a surrogacy program.
- 20:41There were several options they could go for, like one was although they both
- 20:45really wanted to do it. One option was basically it's a program where they
- 20:52take the sperm of both both partners in the relationship and mix them together and
- 21:00when they put and when they uh implanted in a surrogate, it'll basically conceive
- 21:07a child that is both biologically there's right, but unfortunately that is expensive as
- 21:12fuck. Yeah, stupidly, that is stupidly expensive. And while Otter is
- 21:19really well off, he actually makes a lot. He does really well for
- 21:22himself, and he makes a lot of money. He doesn't he's not that
- 21:26rich, just say that. So they decided that they were just going to
- 21:33go for the basic option, which is just just do a standard surrogacy using
- 21:37the sperm of one partner instead, and Otter insisted that Bear be the one
- 21:44two uh donate his sperm so they can have for the kid. M hm.
- 21:52So they actually do go through the They do go through the process.
- 21:56They find a surrogate, really nice woman. She does. She has regularly
- 22:03uh surrogated for several different couples, same sex couples because she she genuinely enjoys
- 22:11carrying their children so they can find so they can have their little bit of
- 22:15happiness, right, which I think is great. But she has a hippie
- 22:19boyfriend who's kind of weird. I'm not gonna really get talked about him that
- 22:22much because I like it's kind of her boyfriend's kind of weird and he and
- 22:30I mean he's he's a cool dude, all right. He's very supportive of
- 22:33his girlfriend and her lifestyle, right donating her uh her uterus to to surrogate
- 22:44children for the same sex couples. But like he kind of gets he kind
- 22:48of gets a little too much enjoyment out of it, we'll just say that,
- 22:52which kind of freaks which kind of freaks bear out a bit. But
- 22:56they realize that this that they choose has a lot of the qualities that they
- 23:03would like because basically she's going to be the mother like this, it's that
- 23:07kind of surrogacy. It's not like they just get a donor egg and just
- 23:11put it in her. Like she's actually donating her own eggs for the surrogacy
- 23:15as well. So yeah, so the process of them choosing a surrogate,
- 23:21they want to make sure that, like the surrogate is somebody that they will
- 23:25like, somebody that they think can be a right fit for them. And
- 23:29they girl that they choose squoozy momentove do contents. H let's see, sorry,
- 24:18let me get her name there, You're fine. They actually attend one
- 24:27of those classes with her uh, a tray to day Megan. Mm hmm.
- 24:55So the circuit. So the circuit they find to carry their kid.
- 25:00It's a girl named Megan. She's really nice. If anything, her personality
- 25:04is very similar to Bears, which is kind of why they chose her.
- 25:08But she has very but instead of the same kind of overthinking neuroticism that Bear
- 25:17has, she is very down to earth and really they really connected when they
- 25:21interviewed her, so they decided where to go with her. And basically,
- 25:30at this point of the story, we're already more than a little bit more
- 25:33than halfway into the book. We're pretty much caught up to the to where
- 25:38it left off in book three. So now as it starts getting now,
- 25:45the story starts taking place more in the present. So so this is where
- 25:51it basically the real story begins. They're having a normal day ty spending time
- 25:57with Dominic. It's just Otter and Bear at the house. They were gonna
- 26:03go. They were planning on going to a doctor's appointment with their surrogate,
- 26:07Meghan, but they decided not to because they had other things they were going
- 26:11to be doing. And is at this point they get a knock on the
- 26:18door and the phone rings. Bear answers the door and Otter answers the phone,
- 26:25and these these two things really kind of freaked Bear out because the person
- 26:30standing at the door is none other than his younger sister that he had never
- 26:37met before, Isabelle McKenna, and she had she had made it all the
- 26:48way to Oregon from Idaho. I think, yeah, Idaho, it's a
- 26:53state right next to It's a state right next to Oregon, right right.
- 27:07So Isabelle tells Bear that their mother had unfortunately, well in Bear's case,
- 27:18fortunately passed away, and rather than wait around for CPS too a claim her
- 27:29and put her and take her into their care. As soon as she found
- 27:33out her mom died, she Isabelle packed up and just dipped. She bought
- 27:37the bus ticket to Seafair. She didn't exactly know the She actually she did
- 27:45know their address because the kid gave Isabelle their address and contact information from in
- 27:56the previous book. She didn't she lost their contact info when and her mother
- 28:02threw away the threw away the contact contact info, but Isabelle had already memorized
- 28:08their address and where to go, so she made it to Seafair. She
- 28:14hiked around a bit and she found the house. She knew it was that,
- 28:18and she knew she had the right house because Tyson had had described what
- 28:22the house looked like and what they had named it, the Green Monstrosity,
- 28:27basically the most gaudiest color of green. The house has painted a really gaudy
- 28:32shade of green. Oh and uh. She shows up. She tells Barry
- 28:38everything, and Bear's freaking out because now, like, of course he's not
- 28:44now he has his little sister to deal with. And just behind him on
- 28:47the phone, Otters kind of starting to freak out too, because the person
- 28:51on the phone is their surrogate, Megan. And while she's doing okay,
- 28:55she tells them that they are having twins. Oh yep, they super one,
- 29:03a two for one. Yeah. So for the rest of the book
- 29:08they start making these jokes, these real these jokes about Bear having super sperm.
- 29:15Oh my god, m not the super sperm, because it resultsed in
- 29:22in a twin pregnancy. So now they got Now they got not one,
- 29:29not two, but three kids to look after now, including Isabelle, who
- 29:33is about thirteen years old. Now, oh god, yep, so they
- 29:40immediately take Isabelle in. Bear contacts the chop protective Services to inform them that
- 29:45his sister has arrived at their doorstep because they had already became aware of her
- 29:51disappearance canceled. He had to speak to the local authorities that in the town
- 29:56that his mom lived and passed away in. Since he is the nective,
- 30:00he is the oldest next of kin, they basically put it on him to
- 30:04settle all over affairs. Uh. He had to go to Idaho to her
- 30:10home. He took bringing Izzy along with him so that way they can pack
- 30:14up any stuff she left behind so they could take it take it back to
- 30:18Sea Fair. He also had to basically get rid of all of his mother's
- 30:22stuff he had. Bear had no interest in keeping anything from his mom.
- 30:29Mm hmmm. As it's been well established since book one, Bear has no
- 30:33real love for his mother after she had put him through. If anything,
- 30:38none of the Mechanic kids have any real love had any real love for their
- 30:42mother all Uh, Bear and Isabel had to deal well, all three of
- 30:53them had to deal with neglect from their mom. They grew up in a
- 30:59household, they grew up, They all grew up with their alcoholic mother.
- 31:02She never she never did anything more than the bare minimum, they always felt
- 31:06like their life was not going anywhere. And in Bear's case, he his
- 31:15entire life was put on hold because his mom abandoned him and his brother and
- 31:18forcing Bar to take care of his younger brother. Yeah, and while Bear
- 31:25never blamed Tyson for that, he'd still he held a lot of resentment for
- 31:29his mom for putting that on him. And then, of course, while
- 31:33Bear dealt with a little bit of with some abandonment problems, Tyson was the
- 31:38one that ended up dealing it with it more because while Bear was already an
- 31:41adult when their mother abandoned them, Tyson was still just a little kid.
- 31:45He was about six years old, like five six years old when it happened,
- 31:49and this caused him to develop severe trust and abandonment problems, which also
- 32:00which also eventually developed into his into a full blown panic disorder, which led
- 32:07to his drug addiction as well. Well. I wouldn't say led to it,
- 32:10but what also contributed to what led him to his to his drug addiction.
- 32:16And then, in Isabel's case, I think Isabel got off easy.
- 32:23While she still suffered from the same kind of neglect that her older brothers did,
- 32:29her mom never abandoned her and never did anything any of the stuff that
- 32:34Bear and Tyson had to deal with. But in the end, her mom
- 32:38died and she was left alone. But the three of them they felt some
- 32:44measure of relief because now they are finally free of their mom. They didn't
- 32:52plan any they didn't do anything more for her in terms of burial. Bear
- 33:00didn't even pay for like a funeral service. The state just simply cremated her
- 33:05bodies and he just claimed he just claimed her remains. Ah And after closing
- 33:12closing up her house, making sure to settle all of our affairs and don't
- 33:15and selling and donating any for possessions, they went back to Seafair and uh,
- 33:22they disposed of her remains on a off of a cliff far from this
- 33:29small stretch of beach that the that their families claimed as their own. They
- 33:32didn't want her ashes to be spread on such a special place because they spread
- 33:38the ashes of their surrogate mother. Yeah, oh my god, what was
- 33:49her name, missus Paquin. Yeah, so a little stretch of beach on
- 34:00that they have used. This where Baron Otter had their first real date,
- 34:07which kind of ended in a disaster because the seagull destroyed their table setting setting
- 34:10it on fire, and then they got rained on many Yeah, they also
- 34:15had many special events there, like Baron Otter got married on that stretch of
- 34:20beach. And when missus Pack went passed away, she was cremated and they
- 34:23spread her remains over that little stretch of beach. And but they didn't want
- 34:29to do the same thing for their mother, so they found a cliff far
- 34:34from that beach and they just tossed her ashes over the edge. And that
- 34:38was that damn like bye bitch, I mean TV fair she had. Yeah,
- 34:47she didn't deserve anything. She didn't deserve anything from any of her kids.
- 34:52While she was never like I said before, Jolie McKenna was never abusive
- 34:59like physically antally or like physically or verbally, but the fact that she was
- 35:05an alcoholic and she never did anything more than the bare minimum for her kids,
- 35:08she still neglected them. And neglect is a form of abuse, Yes
- 35:14it is. And in Bear and and Bear and the kids case, she
- 35:19abandoned them. So she gets she deserves nothing more from her kids. They,
- 35:27if anything, they did exactly what she did for them, and they
- 35:30gave her. Yeah, So for the rest of the book. This is
- 35:35talk. It just comes to it's just really like I said, it's just
- 35:38the it's closing out of the story bear in Otnor preparing for the arrival of
- 35:44their twins, they decided to wait on They decided to wait on the revelation
- 35:52of the gender of their other babies. Yeah, and they had to basically
- 36:00completely redo their baby room. They converted uh Tyson. Well, actually,
- 36:04I'm sorry they had They had a fair room that they had already. Uh,
- 36:09they had already set up for their bit for the arrival of their well
- 36:13singular baby, but now they had to redo it for their now two babies
- 36:16coming in. Izzy ends up taking Tyson's old room, turns it into her
- 36:23own, and bears amazed at how similar Izzy is to uh Tyson, while
- 36:31at the same time being very similar to him. Where Tyson is like a
- 36:37vegan is a vegetarian, I want, I don't want to say vegan,
- 36:39but is a vegetarian and a staunch animal rights activist. Uh, she is
- 36:46quite the opposite. She's very smart, and she's very into things like bugs
- 36:52and insects and entomology. But she but she is not a vegetarian of anything.
- 36:58She kind of like She jokes her around with Bear about that too,
- 37:00and Bears like, oh my god, where have you been my whole life?
- 37:04Mh. But as uh as they as they patiently await the arrival of
- 37:15their kids, they attend a few classes with their with their surrogate, uh
- 37:21what else? Classes called Uh it's where they like you know, learned the
- 37:24breathing exercises, those one those youre talking about, these classes that pregnant women
- 37:34take before they get birth. Yeah, yep, I don't know what they're
- 37:37called, but I know what you mean. Yeah. They they regularly spend
- 37:44time with their surrogate and her boyfriend, and as they're waiting for their babies
- 37:49to you know, arrive, Bear is becoming utterly charmed by Otter because Otter
- 37:55is starting to turn into this emotional mess because he he's very excited for their
- 38:01for their baby, for their babies, right, but he's also really nervous
- 38:06too. He's just like, but what if they don't like me? Like,
- 38:10you know, like I just want to be a good dad. And
- 38:15because Honor is usually the confident and self assured one, while Bear is the
- 38:19emotional mess. Yeah, and Bear's over here like wait, what's going on?
- 38:25Hold? Up because Bear is like he's under he is freaking out more
- 38:29or less. He's like he's over here, like understandably nervous about his kid's
- 38:35arrival, but at the same time he's looking at Honor and he's like what
- 38:38the fuck? Yeah, but uh. And aside from that, they also
- 38:45have to, like I was saying earlier, they had to work with Child
- 38:47Protective Services because they have to make sure they legally get a guardianship over is
- 38:55he, which at this point it's not a It wasn't as much of an
- 39:00ordeal as it was with Tyson. Since Bear is also registered as a foster.
- 39:07Bear and Otter registered as a foster care as foster parents, they were
- 39:12able to take her in and they were able to immediately take her in,
- 39:15so child CPS didn't come in and be like, no, we got to
- 39:17put put her with a foster family before you guys take a guardianship over her.
- 39:25Because they're and CPS considering that they already have files on Bear and Otter,
- 39:31you know, and they already know like their record is clean and is
- 39:34good, they immediately put her in, put her in their care, and
- 39:38they quickly get guardianship over her, so her life is getting so much better
- 39:44now. Eventually, there the day arrives where the two welcome their babies into
- 39:53the world. They get the call that their surrogate has gone into labor and
- 39:59they meet. They immediately head to the hospital. They make sure that she's
- 40:04okay. It does take a little over fourteen hours for her to finally give
- 40:07birth to the kids. While they're waiting, the rest of their extended family
- 40:13show up. Otter's parents, their best friend Create, their best friends Creed
- 40:19an Otter. Well, Creed is I'm sorry Creed his Otter's younger brother,
- 40:22and Bear's best friend, and also their other best friends Anna, who is
- 40:29Creed's wife, And it's hilarious. There's a very cute and also hilarious moment
- 40:37because while they're waiting, Bear becomes I'm sorry, not Bear. Otter becomes
- 40:42such an emotional mess that he actually starts bawling his eyes out, and Bear
- 40:45is standing there like, wait, what, how am I the calm one
- 40:49in this situation? And Otter Otter's dat reveals that all of the Thompson men
- 41:01cry the birth of their of their first kids. M hm, so like
- 41:07when uh Creed had his first kid JJ. He also cried. And then
- 41:13when they're uh Otter's dad at Otter, he cried his eyes out. And
- 41:20it's funny because there's a moment where all the all of their spouses are just
- 41:22like looking at the Thompson men, like these manly motherfuckers are crying their eyes
- 41:29out right now, Like they're not the ones doing the work. They're not
- 41:34the ones, you know, pushing a baby out of them. But either
- 41:39way, it was cute and it was like for Bear, it was like,
- 41:43wow, this is a how the turns have tabled? How the tabled?
- 41:49Because normally bears the emotional wreck and now and now here's Otter turning into
- 41:55such an emotional wreck too, and bears are like, pull yourself together.
- 42:00You're supposed to be the strong one. Mm hmmm, yeah yeah. But
- 42:07they do finally welcome their too, their twin babies into the world. They
- 42:16see here, they welcome in a baby boy and a baby girl. Uh
- 42:28uh me yeah, let me see here, let me see here, let
- 42:35me see here, let me get their names. Let me get their names.
- 42:49Let's see here. What are their kids names? Because they all right,
- 43:16so they ended up naming their their boy noah. Yeah, and let
- 43:27me see Noah and his sister Lily, so they welcomed in their twin babies,
- 43:45Noah and Lily Thompson. And I'm sorry, I don't think I mentioned
- 43:51this before, but when Baron Otter got married, Bart took on uh Otter's
- 43:57family named Thompson, So he's no longer Bear, Uh Derek McKenna, he
- 44:00is Derek Thompson. And they, of course their kids have Otter's surname,
- 44:09Thompson's surname. And basically the story is gonna start wrapping up. There's a
- 44:15few time skips after the birth of the kids, like where there's gonna be
- 44:19about a five year time skip into the future, about a five year time
- 44:23skip the kids, uh, the Thompson family, Bear, Otter, Noah,
- 44:32Lily and Izzy are all getting ready for a wedding, and this wedding
- 44:36is actually the wedding of Tyson and Dominic. Mm hmm, so they're all
- 44:44attending. There's a little cute, little hilarious scene where the where Bear and
- 44:51Otter walk in on their twins playing doctor. Oh my god, not that
- 44:58kind. It's more of like Lily is trying to get I performed surgery on
- 45:05Noah. Now, Noah Noah's personality is clearly the more reserved and quiet,
- 45:13introverted type, while Lily is the one that is the troublemaker. And well,
- 45:19of course, Noah loves his sister and always wants to be around and
- 45:25follow his sister around, always goes along with whatever hair brain scheme his sister
- 45:30comes up with. So his sister says, I want to perform surgery on
- 45:34you. Noah's like, okay, so uh huh. So there's a nice
- 45:43little scene two of them. They're all getting ready for the wedding and they
- 45:46go to attend Tyson and Dominic's wedding. Dominic has his son Ben as his
- 45:53best man, and by this point Ben is like, let's see, I
- 46:00think the kid. Noah and Lily are about Noah and Lily are about four
- 46:07or five years old at this point, so and in the events of the
- 46:12art Breathing, Ben was about three two or three, so he's about so
- 46:16he's about seven years old now. And yeah, so those two have those
- 46:22two finally get married. And after this little scene, there is another time
- 46:25skip. This is the epilogue and the closing of the story. Now it
- 46:30is about ten, like somewhere between ten and twelve years later. And this
- 46:36is this part got me a little fucked up because like in the epilogue,
- 46:40Bear is now fifty years old and Otter is close to sixty, and the
- 46:46kids are now the kids are now teenagers, about sixteen years old. And
- 46:52it's a cute little scene because Otter is having a conversation with Lily and no
- 47:00and they're trying to tell him something and they're very nervous about it, and
- 47:04but they wanted to tell him first because they know how if they don't approach
- 47:08Bear about this subject right, then the Bear may freak out, not in
- 47:16a bad way, but in the not in a bad way, but more
- 47:20that like he is like his nerves can't handle it kind of way. Yeah.
- 47:25Yeah, So Noah comes out as gay basically, and oh, it's
- 47:32one of the it's it's one of those moments where like it's like, oh
- 47:37is that it? Like all Otter is over here, like, oh,
- 47:42well that's okay, Bud, we already knew who but it. But Noah
- 47:50kind of outs himself further by saying by hinting that he's sexually active too,
- 47:54and and Otner is like, excuse me, nothing, nothing like you know
- 48:00those things that like teenagers do where they're just like trying to talk to their
- 48:05parents about something and then they accidentally out themselves on doing something you know they
- 48:07shouldn't. Yeah, exactly, mm hmm. And yeah, this is pretty
- 48:15much where the book ends. I know, I didn't really go into too
- 48:16much detail with this book. That's mainly because most of it was just like
- 48:22a, like I said, a recap summary of what happened in the Art
- 48:27of Breathing. But from Bear's perspective, there's a few extra scenes that I
- 48:31didn't really talk about. Like there's a there's a hilarious interaction between Bear and
- 48:37Creed since the two of them they're still best friends. Creed has two kids
- 48:42now, JJ and AJ. Yeah, there's a theme of names going on
- 48:47here, JJ being the oldest, and he's also a troublemaker too, because
- 48:53it's funny he gets into everything. But Creed he has he has the dad
- 48:57thing down, so like he has this whole parenting thing down. So like
- 49:00while he's having a conversation with Bear, he'll suddenly stop and just call out,
- 49:06JJ, put that fork, pull pull that fork away from that power
- 49:09stock at this instant and but from behind him, you can hear JJ going
- 49:14oh man? And Bear's like, oh my god, I didn't even Bear's
- 49:20like, you didn't even look at him. How did you know he was
- 49:22doing that? And Creed is over You're like, it's a dad thing.
- 49:30Oh lord, yeah, Creed is that kind of cool? Is that he's
- 49:35taken to the role of dad very well, Like he's a total dad.
- 49:40I'm not talking daddy. I mean, no, he's a dad. He's
- 49:44just a dad mm hmm. And there was a fun There was a hilarious
- 49:50scene where Bear and Otter, trying to spice up their sex life, try
- 49:53to do some role playing at a hotel, which fails spectacularly, as these
- 50:00things do. Yeah, but other than that, that's pretty much it for
- 50:06the final installment of The Long and Winding Road, And I think it it
- 50:14was definitely it was a cute ending. It got me fucked The ending got
- 50:17me fucked up because it's like, of course there's this big time skip.
- 50:21Now Otter and Creed are I'm sorry not Creed. Otter and Bear are well
- 50:28into their fifties now, and I'm just like, oh god, oh I
- 50:32can't fifties, can't oof oof. I don't even think I'll be alive,
- 50:40but I don't think I'll live to see my fifties without stressed out. I
- 50:44am, well, you know what, they studies say that people who have
- 50:50anxiety tend to live longer. And I'm like, oh, you fucking whos
- 50:57are you? Tell? Are you because of how? Like? Because of
- 51:00how of my anxiety? I'm going to live longer. I want to live
- 51:07to like I'm a hundred. I want to be an old as dirt,
- 51:13And I go, that's what I want to do. I want to be
- 51:15old as dirt. I'll want me the crazy old the crazy grandpa that just
- 51:22says, ship out of pocket. I just want to be that dude that
- 51:24they experiments that they experiment a like anti aging formula on but turns out to
- 51:30work out too well, so I don't age at all. So like I'll
- 51:35be in my nineties, I'll be in my nineties and I'll still look like
- 51:37I'm in my thirties. Girl, if you ever become a vampire, you
- 51:42better fucking tell me better. At least offer me a turtle life. God
- 51:46damn it, like that TikTok dude, I'm probably gonna be like Louie Louis.
- 51:54If if I ever become a vampire, I'm probably gonna turn into like
- 51:58a vampire like Louis from the Interview with a Vampire, all depressed and like,
- 52:05is this what you want to become? Fut food for the Amostals,
- 52:10all depressed and ship Oh my god, drama. Honestly, I'll tell you,
- 52:15I'll tell you this. I could not finish that book because Louis was
- 52:19so fucking depressing. Ah see, I know. I would probably be more
- 52:23like the stat Oh god, how fucking dancing around with a corpse, like
- 52:32there's still life in this one yet? Oh god, the dramatic, the
- 52:37camp mm hmmm. I mean, honestly, if you're if you're immortal and
- 52:43you can live for like, if you're gonna live for eternity, all right,
- 52:46what's the what's the point of not like being chaotic and funny like that?
- 52:51Huh? I mean that's true, be camp because what else you got
- 52:53to left? Right? Uh? Huh? Like what else? You you?
- 53:00Right? You right? But anyway, that is it for this story.
- 53:08Yeah, Bear the bear Honor in the Kids series for me was definitely
- 53:13more. It was a refreshing story because I typically read mostly science fiction and
- 53:19fantasy mm hmm, and fiction as well. You know, it's weird,
- 53:24Like, okay, I can't really count, Like even if I even in
- 53:29the fiction category, it still falls into the science fiction because like if you
- 53:31read if you read Stephen King novels, they're technically like if you go to
- 53:36Barnes and Noble, the Stephen King shit used to be filed under fiction,
- 53:39but then they moved it to horror. Yeah yeah. And then also there
- 53:45were several other fiction novels like like this independent writer Jeremy Robinson, like his
- 53:54Project Nemesis series and a few other series were often categorized under but they would
- 54:00probably fit better under the science fiction shit. And there's another author I read
- 54:07named Steve Alton. He wrote the Meg series. Yeah, you've seen the
- 54:12movie The Meg. Those movies were based off of his books. Yeah,
- 54:15all right, the books were better. I'm telling you that right now.
- 54:20I like the movies. Don't listen to him. They're fun, they're stupid,
- 54:22and they're great. And then he's made like they made like ten million
- 54:27books, you know, damn well, they're gonna make like ten million movies
- 54:30of each book. I haven't even seen the second one, and I'm not
- 54:34interested in seeing Oh, the second one is so camp. It's so stupid,
- 54:38but like it's fun stupid. Well, see, that's that's the thing.
- 54:43You and I hate camp and you love it. I do, I
- 54:46live, I live, you live for the camp. Like it's so stupid,
- 54:53Like you know, it's stupid, but it's a fun movie to watch
- 54:57because it's stupid. And what's better than watching people can name by a shark
- 55:02a bitch could's eating whole devoured whole wool? Uh, it's so great,
- 55:08it's so great. I love these stuff in the movie. What is better
- 55:13than? What is better than seeing a shark eat people? Seeing a giant
- 55:16monster eat people? What you do see in the Project Nemesis series. Believe
- 55:23you haven't had about those books yet for that book movie, well, because
- 55:30there wasn't a movie about it. But now that you say it says we're
- 55:32not. Since I can't I can't say that, I can't say. We
- 55:36don't have an excuse anymore. Yeah, we don't, Okay, coming up
- 55:42coming up in the new year, Project Nemesis by Jeremy Robbins, I swear
- 55:45in twenty twenty four, we should have a whole month a month of monster
- 55:50books. Yeah, my God, we'll definitely review the Godzilla God's will raise
- 55:57again His little raised rage again was probably the worst gods of the movie,
- 56:04next like next to the uh, next to fucking Matthew Rogercks nineteen ninety eight.
- 56:15Godzilla. Oh oh oh bitch. They have that movie on Hulu and
- 56:22I want to do an episode of it on Spook and I'm gonna have you
- 56:25on there, so I'm gonna force you to watch it with me. Prepare
- 56:30yourself. It's gonna happen sometime next year. Oh my god, I'm pretty
- 56:36sure you're gonna have Dakota on there, and he's just gonna be teasing me
- 56:38the whole time. Dakota, I could. I could have Dakota on that
- 56:45episode because he does love that movie, doesn't he He does, well,
- 56:51I don't even think he does. He just he just jokes about it because
- 56:53he knows it triggers me. Oh my god. Yeah, I'm working on
- 56:59the calendar at some point. Godzilla nineteen ninety eight, Try Star and then
- 57:08it's just it's not that bad of a movie. From what I remember as
- 57:13a child, It's not that bad of a movie. Okay, So I'll
- 57:16give you this if you just take it as it is, exclude it from
- 57:20the whole Godzilla franchise, and it's not terrible, but the fact that is
- 57:25marketed as Godzilla, yeah it Trystar bought the rights to Godzilla. Yeah,
- 57:32just so they can make this movie and then we and this is what they
- 57:36gave us. It wasn't even that bad of a Godzilla film. It's just
- 57:42it's Godzilla. It's Godzilla, though, what do you mean? It's not
- 57:45even Gozilla. It is a giant irradiated iguana. Isn't Godzilla? Is Godzilla
- 57:52nothing more than a giant radiated lizard. Godzilla is an extremeophile, right,
- 58:00an extreme of what extremophile? A life form that evolved under extreme conditions,
- 58:07all right, that can survive in extreme conditions. This Godzilla can't even take
- 58:13can't even take a fucking missile to the face without dying. And don't get
- 58:17me started on his atomic breath. You leave her, you leave her alone.
- 58:23She's doing her best, She is doing her Zilla is doing her best.
- 58:30Her best is not enough. Stand with Zilla, stand with Zilla.
- 58:42Don't stand Withzilla. Don't stand with Zilla. They literally bought the telescope,
- 58:47literally got the rights to that Godzilla. They can kill it off in their
- 58:52own movie. They were like, Okay, you know what, we'll just
- 58:54we're gonna just take this back, and they put it in Godzilla Final Wars
- 58:59for God's Aletta kill and Godzilla killed killed Zilla in like two seconds. Crime
- 59:07crime. No, that was justice right there. What was the real crime
- 59:15was how poorly done that movie that this version of Godzilla was. And Toboscope
- 59:22was like, all right, we're gonna put you on trial and the verdict
- 59:25is death by execution by Godzilla, the real Godzilla. Oh my god.
- 59:34I mean to be fair Godzilla, I mean I can go into a whole
- 59:38round how to Hoo's Godzilla over the years is nothing more than I can't be
- 59:44ass mess. But this is not their podcast for that, And I feel
- 59:49like I did. Let me tell you ulous, this is not the podcast
- 59:58for this. Let me tell you something, man, it will be.
- 1:00:00It will be when we get to the Godzilla book. We could talk about
- 1:00:04uh huh yeah online they're good movies and they're bad movies, all right,
- 1:00:08Like I just said, Yeah, Godzilla Raids Again was not my favorite because
- 1:00:13every time I watch it, I just like zone out because it was so
- 1:00:16boring and uninterested and uninteresting but then later on, you know, they get
- 1:00:23some real you have some really good ones. I mean some of the bad
- 1:00:25ones I can list off right now, Like Godzilla's Revenge is that one that
- 1:00:32they made with children in mind where it's like that kid with Milla. Yeah,
- 1:00:38and Godzilla fights that uh, that really stupid campy monster Gabberra. Yeah,
- 1:00:46so that one was really dumb. Uh. Let me see Godzilla versus
- 1:00:52Hetera. That one actually was considered one of the better ones, surprisingly,
- 1:00:58But let me tell you something. That was a trip. You watched that
- 1:01:00movie and you feel like you're on a You're having like some sort of acid
- 1:01:04trip. God's that's also the one where we get where Godzilla flies. Yeah,
- 1:01:14this is atomic breath and everything to propel himself through the air. And
- 1:01:22then Godzilla versus Megalon, which wasn't was more of like a production mess because
- 1:01:28they used a lot of stock footage from previous movies that they re edited and
- 1:01:31touched up for this movie. Ew Like Power Rangers mm hmmm, which is
- 1:01:38something I will give Netflix on Power Rangers. I know that we're on a
- 1:01:42tangent, but since Netflix is redoing Power Rangers, they're actually not gonna use
- 1:01:47any more footage from the Sinai Super Sentai series actually going away from the traditional
- 1:01:54formula and they're actually gonna do everything from scratch, And I'm like, there
- 1:01:59we go, there we go progress, Because if you didn't know Power Rangers,
- 1:02:07a lot of the time we're using Japanese footage for their stuff, at
- 1:02:10least the older seasons of the Americans. So anyway you didn't know that,
- 1:02:16no, I stopped watching. When you watch money more from Power Rangers,
- 1:02:21the Yellow Rangers a female, and the American one it's a female, and
- 1:02:25the male in the Japanese one it's a male. So if you look at
- 1:02:29the costume during the fight scenes, you will obviously know it's a male,
- 1:02:32not a female. Let's put it that way. I think I do remember
- 1:02:37stuff like that because something like that. There was a show I was watching
- 1:02:40where like every time like a fe obviously very female character would transform, they
- 1:02:45would turn into a very male looking character. Yeah, and I'm always and
- 1:02:52it's kind of I mean, but yeah, No, the Yellow Ranger was
- 1:02:55a male in the Japanese Hey series that they took from from the Rite Morphine.
- 1:03:01It's weird anyway, cool, Yeah, this book mating series go read
- 1:03:07it, or go listen to it because you know audible queen over here,
- 1:03:10you know, we do not discriminate against audio listeners of audiobooks because I listened
- 1:03:16to audiobooks. Shut up, you know, I've listened to three books and
- 1:03:23lets in less than two weeks. What have you done? What have you
- 1:03:27done? Read an actual book? Yeah? And how long is that taking
- 1:03:32you, sir? Let me see, Well, it's been two weeks and
- 1:03:38I'm already halfway through it. So well, then again, I haven't had
- 1:03:42a lot of time to read it. If I had time, I would
- 1:03:44just sit Like today, I'm probably just gonna sit down and read it for
- 1:03:47the rest of the Yeah. If not that, I'll probably just be sitting
- 1:03:52down reading the God's Little Book you gave me. Well, that's true,
- 1:03:55that's true, that too. Probably clean. I'm probably gonna be cleaning up
- 1:03:59the house a bit too. You know. I'm probably I'm gonna say the
- 1:04:00cleaning for later in a minute, like cleaning late looks fucking weirdow Anyway,
- 1:04:08they guys listening today's episode catches. Next time I have to talk about something
- 1:04:11else, talk about another book, it'll probably be me talking about something.
- 1:04:15But yeah, yeah, and I'll be taking a break. Yay yay,
- 1:04:18Bye bye mh.
