- 0:12Speaker 1: this was the thing that one could have. He has
- 0:15Speaker 1: a wild cow milking team. It's a rodeo event. He
- 0:19Speaker 1: reached out to us to sponsor his wild cow milking team.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So me Eater is a sponsor of Tommy's wild cow
- 0:27Speaker 1: milking team. Where you got a milk, a bottle of
- 0:30Speaker 1: milk off of a wild cow or a mean cow maybe,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and then for our sponsorship money, he's given us all
- 0:38Speaker 1: his winnings back for conservation efforts. But he needed a
- 0:42Speaker 1: wild cow milk and T shirt for his team. So
- 0:46Speaker 1: our guy hunter Spencer made up the wild Cow Milking
- 0:51Speaker 1: Team shirt. It's got our nome friend riding a cow
- 0:57Speaker 1: who's bucking big ol' utter and he's holding up a
- 1:00Speaker 1: big old jug of milk like the old days when
- 1:02Speaker 1: they put milk in those glass jars and it says
- 1:05Speaker 1: no them on the range. Tommy needed six I think
- 1:08Speaker 1: for his team, but we made extras. If you want
- 1:11Speaker 1: to buy one, I like mine a lot. Well, I'm
- 1:14Speaker 1: warning X, I always like to wash them first, So
- 1:17Speaker 1: go to the go to the Meat Eater store. We
- 1:20Speaker 1: only have a handful of them. I wanted one, So
- 1:23Speaker 1: now we got a handful of minus one, but we
- 1:25Speaker 1: got some for sale. You can buy them and show
- 1:27Speaker 1: solidarity with the blue collar scholar and his wild cow
- 1:30Speaker 1: milking team. So go to the meat eater dot com

- 2:12Speaker 2: All right, Dan, a dude is back. Add a dude
- 2:15Speaker 2: in a boot? What do you got a boot on?
- 2:18Speaker 2: I broke my ankle man rollerbladingt No?
- 2:23Speaker 3: The next best thing, Steve Yeah?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Skiing? Oh really yeah? I know.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I get no pity or sympathy when I say that
- 2:32Speaker 4: I broke my ankle skiing?
- 2:33Speaker 2: No, what do you think is gonna happen?
- 2:35Speaker 5: Did you get to ride the cart down the mountain? Y?
- 2:38Speaker 3: Yes? I did.
- 2:39Speaker 4: It was my arms were crossed, I was laying down
- 2:43Speaker 4: and someone was holding the sled and.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Taking me down.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It you had to feel like such a candy, yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 4: because they lock your arms and you're like, you're like
- 2:53Speaker 4: a little burrito, and they're like.
- 2:55Speaker 2: All their training is coming into action.
- 2:58Speaker 6: I don't even think Gwyneth Paltrow had had take the
- 3:00Speaker 6: cart down.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Do you want to hear the craziest thing.
- 3:03Speaker 4: It was the same mountain as Gwyneth Paltrow and the
- 3:06Speaker 4: guy that brought me down was involved in that court case.
- 3:10Speaker 4: So did you asked him what he thought about the
- 3:11Speaker 4: whole thing? I mean, he was team hashtag team Gwyneth.
- 3:17Speaker 3: You guys got to fill me in. I'm not up
- 3:19Speaker 3: on Gwyneth.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I didn't know about this.
- 3:24Speaker 1: She hit an old man or an old man hit her,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and I think some accusations where that he groped her too.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I didn't hear that part. I think it was decided
- 3:32Speaker 5: during the during the impact.
- 3:34Speaker 2: So she that's the fan fiction version of the case.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I don't know. That's not actually true.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Guy's fallen real tried to sue her.
- 3:41Speaker 2: No, no, no, she initially thought she was being groped,
- 3:45Speaker 2: but then she realized she was being crashed into.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Yeah, perhaps he sued her for a bunch of money.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Then she countersued him for a dollar.
- 3:53Speaker 7: I think it was the same day that Trump the
- 3:57Speaker 7: Trump got arrested or whatever, So like I kind of
- 3:59Speaker 7: got washed out of news.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But I wouldn't say that he got right.
- 4:02Speaker 7: Yeah, that's why I trying to frame it was your
- 4:04Speaker 7: injury due to a collision or just your.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Own bad anybody on the way down.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Yes, I was, and it's harder to do that, or
- 4:14Speaker 4: did you just start with your own accord? You know
- 4:18Speaker 4: what's really annoying? It was not at all. So I
- 4:21Speaker 4: was skiing with my brother and my brother. I'm a
- 4:24Speaker 4: I'm gonna say objectively, I'm an amazing skier. Objectively, my
- 4:29Speaker 4: brother is a pretty good skier. But well, why do
- 4:31Speaker 4: you think you're such a good skill?
- 4:32Speaker 3: I just know.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I bet you're not better than Yannie.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I mean, we've never skied together, how would we not?
- 4:38Speaker 6: Well, maybe he rates Yannis is amazing.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Plus, yeah, you're so good, so good. My brother not
- 4:46Speaker 4: as good? Pretty good, not as good. But he was
- 4:48Speaker 4: going really fast, and it was like very reckless the
- 4:50Speaker 4: way he was skiing. So I wanted to show him
- 4:52Speaker 4: as the older brother. Hey, it's a sign of mastery
- 4:56Speaker 4: when you can ski very controlled on a steep run.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Let me show you. So we were on a steep
- 5:01Speaker 4: run and I started skiing very controlled, and there was
- 5:04Speaker 4: one of those you know, those little tiny water bottles
- 5:08Speaker 4: like that give you on the airplane getting it on
- 5:10Speaker 4: the plane. It was one of those without the label
- 5:12Speaker 4: on it, so you couldn't see it. And I went
- 5:14Speaker 4: right on top of it and flipped right over and
- 5:17Speaker 4: something snapped in my ankle, and uh, next thing you know,
- 5:21Speaker 4: I was being you know, taken down the mountain, emasculated
- 5:26Speaker 4: in one of those little sleds.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Great skier, weak ankles, to use disposable water, no plastics.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Thing cost you that freaking ankle.
- 5:36Speaker 3: They got me described this run that you were skiing.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I'm going to get an idea of how good of
- 5:40Speaker 3: a skier you are.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Okay, So it's it was like it was a double green.
- 5:45Speaker 4: It wasn't a single green. It was a double green.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Making a joke.
- 5:52Speaker 4: I'm making a joke that No, it was a it
- 5:56Speaker 4: was a challenging run at Deer Valley.
- 5:58Speaker 3: It was not.
- 5:58Speaker 4: It wasn't wasn't the problem was this, They got so
- 6:02Speaker 4: much snow this season that their season is going a
- 6:05Speaker 4: lot longer than it normally does because they just have
- 6:08Speaker 4: so much packed snow.
- 6:10Speaker 2: So it's a lot hotter.
- 6:11Speaker 4: So by one pm everything is slush, and slush is
- 6:14Speaker 4: very dangerous to ski in.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So why are you talking to He doesn't give you that.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I don't know. Did you know that? I don't know
- 6:21Speaker 2: what they do in Latvia? There's no mountains in Latvia.
- 6:24Speaker 3: No. I went to the tallest point Latvia when I
- 6:26Speaker 3: went and visited last fall, three hundred meters. You know
- 6:30Speaker 3: how many feet feet that is?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah, not many. We we parts and literally we're still chatting,
- 6:39Speaker 3: and all of a sudden we stopped. I'm like, I
- 6:43Speaker 3: look around, this is it? I mean it was a
- 6:47Speaker 3: moil is incredible. Nicks Michigan's Thotle, Southern Michigan's little ski
- 6:52Speaker 3: hills look big.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Uh yeah, hit a little water bottle and knocked you over.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It took me out, took me out, and then I went.
- 7:00Speaker 1: To, uh, your fingerprint, that bottle watches that same guy
- 7:05Speaker 1: that had the fingerprinted and it comes back as that
- 7:07Speaker 1: same He was like some kind of.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Physician, wasn't he? He was an eye doctor. The same
- 7:12Speaker 2: eye doctor?
- 7:13Speaker 3: Is that?
- 7:14Speaker 1: Or he when he blasted Gwyneth Paltrow blasted so hard
- 7:18Speaker 1: that came out of her pocket that.
- 7:22Speaker 6: I would consult Gwyneth's people.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I feel awkward to say goop on it.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I would counter water bottle goop.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I yeah. But then the skip.
- 7:36Speaker 4: The nurse thought that it was just bruised. He was like,
- 7:40Speaker 4: a bruise, You're fine, Just go home, You'll be okay.
- 7:43Speaker 4: And then I called my buddy Mow, who's a North
- 7:44Speaker 4: Peak surgeon. On the way home.
- 7:46Speaker 2: He's like, he's like, dude, I think it's broke. Let
- 7:49Speaker 2: me give you give me one second. Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Dan A Dude is a comedian, actor, podcaster, food network
- 7:56Speaker 4: show host, now author.
- 8:00Speaker 2: His new book is called Undercooked.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He was on a Long Time Ago in an episode
- 8:05Speaker 1: called Eating with Your Enemy, the enemy being his friend Moe,
- 8:10Speaker 1: where you and a Muslim go hunt. All you gotta
- 8:13Speaker 1: do is right the rest of that joke. I finally
- 8:17Speaker 1: tell I tell my kids that I was going to
- 8:19Speaker 1: teach him all the dirty dirt, the dirty Dan jokes
- 8:23Speaker 1: once they got their learner's permits.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It seemed like a good age for driving. But I
- 8:28Speaker 2: told him the don't mess with Uncle Jimmy when he's
- 8:32Speaker 2: drinking the other night that went over real, Well, how
- 8:35Speaker 2: what is it again?
- 8:37Speaker 3: So okay, I don't know anything.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Just tells you about okay.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Sounds it sounds just exasperated.
- 8:50Speaker 1: When Dirty Dan is, he gets in a lot of
- 8:55Speaker 1: trouble at school for his foul mouth and his uh
- 8:59Speaker 1: you know. And so Dirty Dan's and the day the
- 9:02Speaker 1: day's lesson in Dirty Dan's classes, you have to tell
- 9:05Speaker 1: a story that has a moral. So you know, a
- 9:09Speaker 1: little Susie gets up and she's like, my dad tore
- 9:13Speaker 1: his seam on his jacket a little bit.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It was too lazy to sew it up. And then
- 9:19Speaker 2: she caught it on a he caught it on a
- 9:21Speaker 2: branch and it now it's a huge hole. And she's like,
- 9:24Speaker 2: what's the moral of that story? It's like, well, stitch
- 9:26Speaker 2: in time saves nine, okay, And then you do one
- 9:31Speaker 2: like my dad.
- 9:33Speaker 1: We were pick collecting the eggs and we put them
- 9:35Speaker 1: on one basket and my brother knocked the basket over,
- 9:41Speaker 1: So don't put all your eggs and they all broke.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. And Dirty
- 9:46Speaker 1: Dan gets up and tells this horrific story about his
- 9:49Speaker 1: uncle in Vietnam, and it involves his uncle getting extraordinarily drunk.
- 9:56Speaker 1: And imagine like, just then you describe sort of the
- 9:59Speaker 1: word war crimes you could fit into a joke tailored
- 10:05Speaker 1: to your particular audience, and it ends with just like
- 10:09Speaker 1: the most horrific scene of carnage and depravity, and the
- 10:13Speaker 1: teachers like, what in the world is the moral of that?
- 10:18Speaker 1: He's like, you know, Uncle Jimmy, when he's drinking, it's good. Yea,
- 10:23Speaker 1: he beat that outfit.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I'm always drinking.
- 10:33Speaker 2: But a long joke. It's when you tell the thing.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Yes, yes, what we're trying to say here, guys, is
- 10:39Speaker 4: comedy is not easy.
- 10:43Speaker 2: The moral of So what Phil said when Phil said,
- 10:49Speaker 2: we know Mo, it's because when Dan a dude was
- 10:52Speaker 2: on the show before, we spent a lot of time
- 10:55Speaker 2: talking about his Muslim hunting buddy.
- 10:57Speaker 8: Mo.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a great story and how they.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Have and how the Israelis and the pal whoever around
- 11:04Speaker 1: the world could find a lot of inspiration from this story.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Uh yeah, And I mean, I don't know if if
- 11:12Speaker 4: you're aware. I think I probably did tell you, but
- 11:15Speaker 4: you that episode is the whole reason that this book happened,
- 11:19Speaker 4: wouldn't have happened to me that?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. So what blurb this book? You did?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Blurb this book?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Every time someone asked me the blurb a book, I
- 11:25Speaker 1: always think I'm going to write them. I think I'm
- 11:27Speaker 1: going to like spend weeks on it and write the
- 11:30Speaker 1: most amazing like where the blurb is better than the book.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Yeah, a New York Times best selling blurb.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, like people will buy it to read the blurb. Ye.
- 11:39Speaker 2: And then in the end, I wrote, I.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Just kind of put it in chat GPT.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 4: So I did the episode and my manager listened to
- 11:51Speaker 4: it and she was like, this is a crazy story.
- 11:54Speaker 4: You should write a movie about your friend Mo. You
- 11:57Speaker 4: and you and your friend Mo do like a buddy comedy.
- 12:00Speaker 4: So I wrote an outline for a movie and it
- 12:03Speaker 4: was was really crappy, and she was like, why don't
- 12:05Speaker 4: you just do some free writing, write about why you
- 12:08Speaker 4: love food so much?
- 12:09Speaker 2: Who told you do this?
- 12:10Speaker 4: My manager? Your manager told you to do some free writing,
- 12:13Speaker 4: she said, do some free writing. Like I was in
- 12:15Speaker 4: sixth grade.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you could go down and do that at my
- 12:17Speaker 2: kid's school. Those guys. Yeah, free writing.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Do some free writing daydream for ten minutes beforehand. Then
- 12:24Speaker 3: then you do some free writing.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Writing means that happened to you this summer, free writing,
- 12:31Speaker 2: meaning you don't get paid for it, exactly.
- 12:34Speaker 4: She did not get ten percent of that free writing.
- 12:37Speaker 4: And I wrote this whole story that about you know,
- 12:41Speaker 4: growing up and my relationship with my dad and why
- 12:44Speaker 4: I got into food and all this stuff. She's like,
- 12:46Speaker 4: this is cool, but it doesn't feel like a movie.
- 12:47Speaker 4: It could be like a chapter of a book.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Can you write?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Do you have two more chapters in you? So I
- 12:52Speaker 4: wrote two more chapters.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Got your manager's like, motherly.
- 12:55Speaker 4: She's awesome, she's killer Aaron Brown, shout out. And so
- 13:01Speaker 4: one chapter was my relationship with my dad. The second
- 13:04Speaker 4: one was about returning a dish at the number one
- 13:07Speaker 4: restaurant in the world the day that it was crowned
- 13:09Speaker 4: the number one restaurant in the world, which was true story.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And then you know.
- 13:18Speaker 4: And then the third one was about buying a gun
- 13:20Speaker 4: in a gun store. And what you have to go
- 13:22Speaker 4: through is someone, for someone who doesn't know anything about guns,
- 13:25Speaker 4: being in a gun store, it's like the worst experience ever. Anyway,
- 13:28Speaker 4: So I wrote those three. She sent it to a
- 13:31Speaker 4: LID agent. Lid agent was like, these are good chapters,
- 13:34Speaker 4: and a month later pitched it to Crown Publishing and
- 13:38Speaker 4: there was like a bidding war with two different publishers
- 13:41Speaker 4: and they ended up buying it. And a month later like,
- 13:43Speaker 4: I had to start writing a book and I'm not
- 13:45Speaker 4: a freaking book writer.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Authors, I'm not a book writer.
- 13:51Speaker 4: And yeah, then I spent the whole year writing this book,
- 13:56Speaker 4: all because of your podcast.
- 13:57Speaker 1: So how did your manager and the agent split the cut?
- 14:00Speaker 2: They didn't. She didn't pull ten into the agent pulled fifteen.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Hold on, Steve, before we get into that, I feel
- 14:05Speaker 4: like you need to get better at accepting praise. Okay,
- 14:09Speaker 4: is this something that happens a lot in your life?
- 14:11Speaker 4: I was saying, I was thanking you, Oh, I'm sorry
- 14:14Speaker 4: for and then you're like, what's the cut?
- 14:15Speaker 2: What is the agent?
- 14:16Speaker 3: Manager?
- 14:17Speaker 2: Let's get down to brass tacks.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I'm thanking you for creating this platform which created the
- 14:23Speaker 4: space to create this book.
- 14:25Speaker 2: So thank you. Oh you're welcome.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Yeah, all right now, agent gets ten percent, manager gets
- 14:31Speaker 4: another ten percent, lawyer gets five percent. I ended up
- 14:34Speaker 4: I end up walking with like three percent.
- 14:38Speaker 2: After all, a sudden done, you called, Are you sure
- 14:40Speaker 2: I'm only supposed to get three?
- 14:43Speaker 3: I remember when I told you a free writing.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Uh, you know what I uncovered recently and you'll appreciate this.
- 14:53Speaker 1: All three of you so not you, but Yanni, Callahan
- 14:57Speaker 1: and Brody all have spent time as.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Trout guides. Trout fishing guides.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I have just in the last two weeks met two
- 15:08Speaker 1: people who I had to have legal arguments with where
- 15:13Speaker 1: they're out of staters fishing guided trout trips in Montana
- 15:18Speaker 1: and the guides are telling them their preferences as though
- 15:22Speaker 1: it's codified by law. I had the longest argument with
- 15:27Speaker 1: someone telling me you are not allowed to kill a
- 15:30Speaker 1: trout on the gallat And River.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Illegal.
- 15:37Speaker 1: It's not illegal. That was your guide telling you that.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I had another person that said on the Big Hole River, no,
- 15:48Speaker 1: not only can't you kill a trout on the Big Hole,
- 15:50Speaker 1: you cannot use a barb on a hook on the
- 15:54Speaker 1: entirety of the Big Hole River. Like that was just
- 15:58Speaker 1: someone's that's what how someone is making you do it. No, no, no,
- 16:02Speaker 1: that's the law. They told me.
- 16:05Speaker 3: How are you running into these fly fisher folks?
- 16:09Speaker 1: One I was talking to on the phone, and their name.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Is Tracy e. Y. Who's the other one? Tell me
- 16:19Speaker 2: the other thing? The other thing was.
- 16:21Speaker 1: A a well known, very well known.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Sportscaster who's even done the Olympics.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Do you trust everything on the teleprompter? You ask him?
- 16:37Speaker 2: That not an estimate? You guys. I thought you guys
- 16:41Speaker 2: had more to say about that. Well, I have something
- 16:43Speaker 2: to say about it.
- 16:45Speaker 4: I say, you started this whole thing by saying something
- 16:48Speaker 4: that you three guys have in common, but Dan doesn't.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Is that you Well, did you try? Did you see guide?
- 16:53Speaker 2: T Fisher?
- 16:53Speaker 4: That's your assumption, is that I did not guide because
- 16:57Speaker 4: I just read all the stuff you do well comedian, actor, podcaster,
- 17:01Speaker 4: food network show host and author.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I don't know, Crin. Did you leave fishing guy?
- 17:08Speaker 3: For sure, you spend time as a fly fishing guide.
- 17:11Speaker 3: It would be top of the list.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Well, I don't like to lead with it, okay, And
- 17:15Speaker 4: that I was given. I was given a word count
- 17:18Speaker 4: that I had to you know, I got to the
- 17:20Speaker 4: end of it. We didn't have room for it.
- 17:22Speaker 5: He once broke his ankle while he was guiding.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I did. There was stuff, A little little pebble there.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Was, but stealing back you just don't appreciate the subterfuge there.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I just feel like.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It's a little bit to take impressionable people who you're
- 17:40Speaker 1: introducing to something and and create and taking like your
- 17:44Speaker 1: personal preferences and acting like your personal preferences are codified
- 17:49Speaker 1: by law, just to save yourself any argument. They're like, well,
- 17:53Speaker 1: why can't I keep a fish going? Like wow, because
- 17:57Speaker 1: I just don't want you to. I don't like the
- 17:59Speaker 1: sight of blood. I don't want to get it all slimy.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I need to catch this fish tomorrow.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It's to be like, you can't. It's against the wall.
- 18:06Speaker 5: All those are little five dollars and ten dollars bills
- 18:09Speaker 5: swimming around the river.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So saying that, they're like, it's against the wall and
- 18:15Speaker 1: they don't have to hear about it all day.
- 18:17Speaker 8: That's just a lie though.
- 18:18Speaker 4: That's like how people talk to their kids right like said,
- 18:23Speaker 4: it's illegal.
- 18:24Speaker 2: You can't do that, yeah, because God will strike you down.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Right now, there are where those things are true, just
- 18:30Speaker 5: not on those.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Groups I know.
- 18:32Speaker 1: But yes, I'll tell let's see, you know what, I'll
- 18:36Speaker 1: save it for the next group of people on another
- 18:38Speaker 1: episode and not bring it up.
- 18:39Speaker 8: Then, No, just keep bringing it up.
- 18:42Speaker 2: I'm going to bring it up with some people who
- 18:44Speaker 2: are like, well, that won't stand. That's what That's what
- 18:48Speaker 2: I'd like to hear. Here.
- 18:49Speaker 3: I got to who are they fishing with? I'm gonna
- 18:52Speaker 3: call this fly shop?
- 18:54Speaker 2: No.
- 18:54Speaker 3: I remember I was looking for Brodie. I was looking
- 18:57Speaker 3: for when I was a young guy working at Fishing Outfitters,
- 19:01Speaker 3: or even before I was working there. I took the
- 19:03Speaker 3: Guide class. I remember there were several discussions within that
- 19:08Speaker 3: week of learning. This is how you address the address.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Deal with a client that says I would like to
- 19:16Speaker 3: eat trout for.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Lunch, You tell them it's illegal.
- 19:20Speaker 5: I mean there was a long lend, but a lot
- 19:24Speaker 5: of it was made up.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Never one would be they don't taste good. Why would
- 19:31Speaker 3: you want to kill this poor animal? It doesn't taste good?
- 19:34Speaker 2: No, No, I know that I would like them it's illegal.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Well, if it's illegal, why would you lead with it
- 19:42Speaker 6: doesn't taste good?
- 19:45Speaker 2: On the cake? I sing on the cake.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Just so you know, towards the end of my guide
- 19:48Speaker 5: and career, I'd let people bonk one now and then
- 19:51Speaker 5: because you.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Knew you were getting out of it. There wasn't it.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That's what you're ready from pillage.
- 19:56Speaker 6: On your way out, I selected species where I'm like,
- 20:00Speaker 6: if we catch this or this, absolutely, and it'd be like,
- 20:04Speaker 6: you know, rainbow trout or lake trout on cutthroat, cutthroat water,
- 20:11Speaker 6: cold water.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I remember one time, I remember Rob Waters. He wasn't
- 20:16Speaker 3: quite he wasn't on the fly fishing train yet. He
- 20:19Speaker 3: would have been a rafting guide, but would also take
- 20:22Speaker 3: some fishing clients if the rafting company had fishing clients
- 20:25Speaker 3: or people interested in fishing. Oh yeah, I got a
- 20:27Speaker 3: couple of spin rods in the truck, and you know
- 20:29Speaker 3: we'll bring them along.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Can you start that story over again?
- 20:32Speaker 3: Sure?
- 20:33Speaker 2: I got confused.
- 20:33Speaker 3: This fishing guide, Rob Waters that we later worked with
- 20:38Speaker 3: a lot who became a was at some point probably
- 20:41Speaker 3: the number one guy at that fly shop for quite
- 20:43Speaker 3: a few years, which just means you're like, you're into it,
- 20:46Speaker 3: You're gonna work a lot. But I had already started
- 20:49Speaker 3: as a fly fishing guide. He was a rafting guide,
- 20:52Speaker 3: I see, But would if they had interested fishing clients
- 20:56Speaker 3: or if people interested in fishing coming rafting. He said,
- 20:59Speaker 3: oh yeah, I got some.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Oh so someone books a rafting trip and they're like, hey,
- 21:02Speaker 1: is there any chance we could catch a trout?
- 21:04Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, yeah. Or they just happened to call the
- 21:06Speaker 3: rafting company instead of the fly shop because it would
- 21:09Speaker 3: be half priced for a fishing trip, and Rob would say, sure,
- 21:12Speaker 3: I'll take them.
- 21:13Speaker 1: That's a sharp thinker, right there. You call for a
- 21:16Speaker 1: float trip to fish and they're like, how much this.
- 21:18Speaker 5: It's probably not going to work out the way you
- 21:20Speaker 5: wanted to.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Most of the time, you're not going to do a
- 21:23Speaker 3: lot of catch.
- 21:24Speaker 2: I got what you're saying. Yeah, you might get for
- 21:27Speaker 2: half his month, half the money, you might get half
- 21:30Speaker 2: the experience. Yeah, if you're lucky.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Brody's trying to protect the industry down there. Go ahead, Dan,
- 21:35Speaker 4: you got you want to interrupt him too? Yeah, thank you,
- 21:37Speaker 4: this is your show now, Thank you so much. Thanks
- 21:39Speaker 4: for thanks for having you. Guys have been great so far.
- 21:43Speaker 4: What okay, call me an ignorant and I'm curious about
- 21:46Speaker 4: where his story's going. Well, I had Yes, I am
- 21:50Speaker 4: curious about it, but wait, I thought we got there.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I can get there.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I thought we got there.
- 21:55Speaker 3: There was no punchline yet. I'm curious about it, but
- 21:58Speaker 3: not in a way that I want to hear.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Very quickly yes, yes, I had.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Befriended Rob and he was asking about becoming a fly
- 22:09Speaker 3: fishing guy. And one day he's eddied out and I'm which,
- 22:14Speaker 3: you know what that means, right, He's pulled off on
- 22:16Speaker 3: the side of the river and some recriculating water and
- 22:19Speaker 3: I'm floating by towards the end of the day, and
- 22:21Speaker 3: we give that how was how was the fishing today?
- 22:24Speaker 2: Whatever?
- 22:25Speaker 3: And Rob reaches down between his legs and pulls up
- 22:29Speaker 3: a stringer and there's a couple of dandies and my
- 22:32Speaker 3: clients says, are like, hold on what I'm like and
- 22:35Speaker 3: I'm supposed to act, you know, as a fly fishing guy.
- 22:39Speaker 3: It's like, oh, that dirty bastard, how could he do?
- 22:43Speaker 3: You do such a thing? And it was so funny
- 22:46Speaker 3: that for me, I forgot about it an hour later.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Rob for years would just be I can't believe I
- 22:52Speaker 3: ever did that, And that was me back then. I
- 22:55Speaker 3: showed those fish like that to you and I'm so
- 22:57Speaker 3: sorry and it was the wrong thing to do, and
- 23:00Speaker 3: oh it was, but yeah, I'll never forget how was
- 23:03Speaker 3: your day? And he just you know, that was just
- 23:04Speaker 3: something that you didn't You never would look at a
- 23:06Speaker 3: guy in a driftboat and expect that. Right, he's in
- 23:09Speaker 3: a raft. How's your day? And he reaches his legs
- 23:12Speaker 3: and just pulls the string white.
- 23:20Speaker 4: So okay, so what is I'm assuming it would be
- 23:23Speaker 4: illegal to catch these trout?
- 23:25Speaker 2: Is that?
- 23:25Speaker 9: What?
- 23:26Speaker 2: No? What? What is the no?
- 23:28Speaker 4: But then why is it crazy for someone to be like,
- 23:31Speaker 4: I want to have trout for lunch because of.
- 23:33Speaker 6: It's not the culture and the perception and oftentimes just
- 23:40Speaker 6: what your your guide of the day wants to do. Right,
- 23:44Speaker 6: it's like, well, yeah, we're not going to do that.
- 23:46Speaker 6: We're going to fish this way, and I don't want
- 23:49Speaker 6: to deal with your fish in my cooler, or there's
- 23:54Speaker 6: idea that you.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Just I don't want anyone killing him because then I
- 24:00Speaker 2: can't catch them.
- 24:01Speaker 5: And there's a culture of catching release associated with trout.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Trout got it in.
- 24:08Speaker 1: A recent episode four thirty four, name My mule Deer
- 24:12Speaker 1: can Kick Your White tails ass.
- 24:16Speaker 2: That was a great title.
- 24:17Speaker 4: That's a great title.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I argue with Tony Peterson about whether hunting mule deer
- 24:22Speaker 1: is better than hunting white tail. Apparently I didn't know
- 24:28Speaker 1: this till the other day. People have taken Are you
- 24:30Speaker 1: sure that.
- 24:31Speaker 2: This is the quote? They're talking about. Yeah, I know
- 24:34Speaker 2: that I said some stuff on Rogan show.
- 24:36Speaker 5: It modes I I know exactly what this is. People
- 24:40Speaker 5: are doing it all over the place because I took
- 24:42Speaker 5: that little clip from Rogan yep, followed it up with
- 24:45Speaker 5: a picture of a big mule deer buck that I shot.
- 24:48Speaker 5: That thing has like a million views and and a
- 24:52Speaker 5: lot of other people started doing it.
- 24:54Speaker 8: Oh, so you mean it's a quote.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I think it was. It wasn't from when I was
- 24:57Speaker 2: talking to Tony Peterson. I think it was something from
- 24:59Speaker 2: one I was talking about.
- 25:01Speaker 8: Like, okay, they may have mistaken that.
- 25:03Speaker 2: What was the clip?
- 25:04Speaker 4: What is it?
- 25:05Speaker 2: Just talking about why I like Muldier?
- 25:06Speaker 1: Like for some reason, if I said to you, like
- 25:09Speaker 1: if you said, I like, you know, chocolate ice cream
- 25:12Speaker 1: better than vanilla.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Ice cream, you know, because I don't know tastes chocolate. Okay,
- 25:18Speaker 4: no one's gonna get pissed.
- 25:20Speaker 1: But for some reason, if you say that you like
- 25:21Speaker 1: Muldier a lot better than White Tails people, it's like
- 25:24Speaker 1: people get mad about it.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I don't understand it.
- 25:26Speaker 1: So casey Uh and Tyler from The Element they say
- 25:30Speaker 1: it's a real punch below the belt in.
- 25:35Speaker 2: The Midwest and down South.
- 25:38Speaker 1: M they like them white Tail Deer as do I
- 25:44Speaker 1: it's not as much so point being the best argument.
- 25:50Speaker 1: We have a show with the Element guy. It's called
- 25:52Speaker 1: buck Truck, which you can go watch on YouTube, and
- 25:57Speaker 1: they got a Kansas episode up, which is, uh maybe
- 26:00Speaker 1: the best argument in favor of white Tail. So for
- 26:03Speaker 1: you're cruising around on YouTube looking for stuff, well, you
- 26:06Speaker 1: know what, when you watch YouTube these days, I know
- 26:08Speaker 1: it's like personalized.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Do you always get the guy who's like carbs burn
- 26:13Speaker 2: fat right, yes? Wrong, yes, sweets burn fat or whatever
- 26:18Speaker 2: he's talking about. I wonder how that.
- 26:21Speaker 8: Guy how much money they've spent on that time that guy.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Not only that, but if you now realize that there
- 26:26Speaker 3: are ads that are basically what you just said, there's
- 26:31Speaker 3: a dude now that doesn't add that starts off with
- 26:34Speaker 3: hey are you on YouTube? And you're always getting ads
- 26:36Speaker 3: from the guy that can tell you this, well, guess
- 26:39Speaker 3: what his ship's real? Like he's selling it for that guy.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Like they're just.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Very metal, it's very meta. They're doubling your head, sits
- 26:48Speaker 2: on your body right, wrong.
- 26:51Speaker 3: They haven't got I still can't tell you what they're
- 26:54Speaker 3: selling or what the what.
- 26:57Speaker 2: One days on there. Bananas are good? Right, Oh yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 2: he's got worse. Yeah, he's got five seconds.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Yeah, what one of these five foods is tank and
- 27:08Speaker 4: your testosterone?
- 27:10Speaker 2: Anybody.
- 27:12Speaker 7: I haven't watched it to the end, but I watched
- 27:14Speaker 7: about a minute and a half, in which I never
- 27:16Speaker 7: do because I'm like, let me see where this goes.
- 27:18Speaker 7: And he doesn't pitch anything a product, an idea. He
- 27:20Speaker 7: just keeps going on about carbs and stuff, like, what
- 27:23Speaker 7: are you trying to sell me?
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll give a dollar to whoever can watch long
- 27:26Speaker 1: enough to find out which of those foods is killing
- 27:30Speaker 1: my tea my testosterone.
- 27:33Speaker 2: It's like bananas. No, but I mean I from.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Him because I eat all the foods. He's like these
- 27:40Speaker 1: your head sits on your body?
- 27:42Speaker 8: Right, wrong, it's probably it's probably like the longer you
- 27:46Speaker 8: keep that running, like some hacker somewhere gets all your information.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Maybe he's making money on the ad, on the ad
- 27:55Speaker 3: revenue and the actually yeah.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't make money on ads. You spend money.
- 28:01Speaker 6: He's spending of a video that doesn't actually go anywhere,
- 28:06Speaker 6: and it's and you just type in wait till the end, right,
- 28:10Speaker 6: And then finally you're.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Like well, it's like an old sign in bars to
- 28:15Speaker 2: say free beer tomorrow.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure there's gonna be a few
- 28:19Speaker 3: folks that write in so answer.
- 28:21Speaker 2: He does the thing.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Now, I don't know if they're real or not, but
- 28:23Speaker 1: a lot of his ads. Now, I'm just bringing this
- 28:25Speaker 1: all up because when you go, I'm just preparing you
- 28:27Speaker 1: from when you go watch the buck Truck by the element.
- 28:30Speaker 1: You want to watch some sweet white tail videos, you.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Gont have to wait long enough. You got wait five seconds,
- 28:35Speaker 2: you can skip it. So I always get five seconds
- 28:37Speaker 2: of this guy, and a lot of times he's on
- 28:40Speaker 2: the way they do it. It's like, are the real podcasts?
- 28:44Speaker 2: He's like a podcast guest. So he'll be sitting there
- 28:46Speaker 2: with headphones on talking to some other guy who's got
- 28:49Speaker 2: headphones on.
- 28:50Speaker 1: He's like, he's like these five soup one of these
- 28:53Speaker 1: five superfoods isn't a superfood.
- 28:56Speaker 2: It's lowering your titosterone. Yeah, he and he it's clicking, Wait, damn,
- 29:02Speaker 2: which one is?
- 29:02Speaker 1: It's way But then the skip ad comes up and
- 29:05Speaker 1: I skip. I never found out what the hell's going on.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Then I'm sitting there chilling with the watching buck Truck.
- 29:10Speaker 2: And wondering the whole time, what was that one food is?
- 29:13Speaker 2: He like, man, that's a sweet buck, but were the
- 29:15Speaker 2: same food is killing.
- 29:17Speaker 6: The same dude with the cup coffee? And and he's
- 29:21Speaker 6: like after GM, somebody's like, what the hell is in
- 29:25Speaker 6: your coffee cup? And he's like slinging some kind of
- 29:29Speaker 6: who knows. But I always think at that point, I'm like,
- 29:32Speaker 6: never in a million years would I ever turn to
- 29:35Speaker 6: somebody at the gym and be like, what the hell's
- 29:37Speaker 6: in your car? I'm like, I give a ship, what's
- 29:39Speaker 6: in your coffee cup? Don't talk to me?
- 29:41Speaker 2: You know it worked.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Look at how much free advertising we're giving this guy.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Unclear on what is I'm unclear on what is being sold.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Anyhow, Go to YouTube type in the element buck truck.
- 29:57Speaker 2: The guy will come on about whatever he's going on about,
- 30:02Speaker 2: and then you'll get a little bit mildly curious, and
- 30:06Speaker 2: then skip ad will come up. You'll skip the ad,
- 30:10Speaker 2: watch buck truck, and then later you can lay in
- 30:12Speaker 2: bed at night wondering what was it? What you're eating it?
- 30:15Speaker 2: You shouldn't be.
- 30:16Speaker 3: I think mule deers are better than whitetail.
- 30:19Speaker 4: No, and yeah, and the Element will make you fall
- 30:24Speaker 4: in love with white tails all over again. Speaking of
- 30:27Speaker 4: white tails, Clay had an amazing story about his pet deer,
- 30:32Speaker 4: and it prompted someone to write in about they had
- 30:34Speaker 4: a pet deer.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I mean, they got this deer. It's got a collar.
- 30:37Speaker 8: On, got a dog harness, it's got a.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Dog harness on.
- 30:40Speaker 3: They want t shirts.
- 30:42Speaker 4: They collect all of its sheds over the years. It
- 30:46Speaker 4: ate its button buck sheds. But the thing I like
- 30:50Speaker 4: about the thing, the deer ate its own button buck sheds.
- 30:54Speaker 4: It's like a rabbit eating his own pellets.
- 30:56Speaker 3: It looks like an awesome place to grow up. I
- 30:58Speaker 3: like to picture with him. He says, it's his sister,
- 31:01Speaker 3: but she must be a lot older.
- 31:03Speaker 2: That's got to be his ma.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Well, there's three turkeys behind him in that one picture.
- 31:07Speaker 3: This kid, this guy had a great, great childhood.
- 31:11Speaker 1: It was a very loving pet deer, he goes on
- 31:13Speaker 1: to say, and would like to snuggle. But if it
- 31:15Speaker 1: was the rut, it did not want to snuggle.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Men, why wouldn't they chop the balls off of the deer?
- 31:25Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you why.
- 31:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 1: When he was going bow hunting for deer, he would
- 31:30Speaker 1: snuggle that deer as cover scent. You weren't here when
- 31:37Speaker 1: Clay Clay's pet deer. One time, He's sitting in the
- 31:40Speaker 1: woods and here comes his pet deer with another buck,
- 31:47Speaker 1: which Clay killed. No, and then his deer came up
- 31:50Speaker 1: and actually put nuzzled Clay.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Like it was a Judas deer.
- 31:56Speaker 8: Wow, it's like his new hunting buddy.
- 31:59Speaker 4: This is the buddy common of the year about Yeah,
- 32:02Speaker 4: guy and his deer.
- 32:03Speaker 2: It would lure in. It would lure and de would
- 32:07Speaker 2: go out and find bucks and bring bucks back to
- 32:09Speaker 2: Clay for Clay to kill. Come on, let's hang bro,
- 32:12Speaker 2: you gotta come hang out here. Yeah, that is some.
- 32:14Speaker 2: That's some like h Rosendale. What was that family? They
- 32:20Speaker 2: the people we executed the husband and wife? Oh Linnburg
- 32:24Speaker 2: baby on No the spot, Socco and venz Eddie. Yeah,
- 32:29Speaker 2: no Rosenbergs or something like that. They're like communists or something.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Yeah, here's an interesting article and I like the story,
- 32:41Speaker 1: but then it goes goes direction.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I'm not crazy, but where was this? This is oh.
- 32:46Speaker 8: CBC Canadian Broadcasting.
- 32:50Speaker 5: British Columbia.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Prince George, British Columbia. Man driving down the road and
- 32:55Speaker 1: got concussed by a ruffed grouse that came blasting through
- 32:59Speaker 1: his virtually open window, knocked him senseless, knocked the driver
- 33:05Speaker 1: so senseless that when he comes to, he can't figure
- 33:09Speaker 1: out why there's a grouse in his truck.
- 33:11Speaker 8: Because the grouse is also knocked.
- 33:15Speaker 2: It canst the grouse. They were mutually concussed.
- 33:19Speaker 1: The grouse resuscitates, he resuscitates, He films the grouse, opens
- 33:25Speaker 1: the door, and the grouse gets away. Here's where the
- 33:27Speaker 1: story takes a strange turn. They actually went to an
- 33:32Speaker 1: ornithologist to learn this, that it's odd that the grouse
- 33:42Speaker 1: could have gotten through a cracked window and hit the
- 33:44Speaker 1: man in the head.
- 33:46Speaker 8: They're doing some real background journalism.
- 33:48Speaker 3: And.
- 33:50Speaker 2: They went to an ornithologist to say, what are your
- 33:53Speaker 2: what's your take on this? I don't believe that the
- 33:57Speaker 2: ground to what she said, Wow, if the window is
- 34:00Speaker 2: only open four inches, that seems like uh unlikely. Does
- 34:06Speaker 2: does he have That's that's hard hitting? That's hard hitting.
- 34:09Speaker 6: Associates degree in physics also like the or like come on.
- 34:13Speaker 1: They went to an ornithologist did tell them how fast
- 34:17Speaker 1: were you going?
- 34:18Speaker 3: Exactly?
- 34:18Speaker 5: The ornithologist said it was a one in a million shot.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Which I don't believe and how is he qualified?
- 34:26Speaker 4: Like he's an ornithology in the ornithology community, that is
- 34:30Speaker 4: something that's studied.
- 34:31Speaker 2: It's like the third year of ornithology school. Train a
- 34:34Speaker 2: leaves the Chicago with this individual.
- 34:38Speaker 1: This individual that was concosted by the grouse is an
- 34:41Speaker 1: elected official. Okay, the plot in tribal politics. They said
- 34:47Speaker 1: that they feel they're the only they feel that they're
- 34:49Speaker 1: the only elected official. This individual that was struck said,
- 34:57Speaker 1: I can one guarantee this is a oh, I can
- 35:02Speaker 1: guarantee that I'm the only elected official in Canada to
- 35:06Speaker 1: ever get hit in the face by a grouse while driving.
- 35:10Speaker 1: CBC News has not been able to verify this claim.
- 35:14Speaker 4: They should ask the ornithologist. He knows he's got all
- 35:17Speaker 4: the weird knowledge.
- 35:18Speaker 1: As of publication time, they had contacted seventy two percent
- 35:22Speaker 1: of all elected officials to ever serve in Canada and
- 35:26Speaker 1: have been so far, but has not been able to
- 35:31Speaker 1: absolutely verify his claim.
- 35:35Speaker 6: The good folks at the CBC are going to stick
- 35:37Speaker 6: with this one. See it through.
- 35:39Speaker 1: This is a new take on trail camp problems. I
- 35:42Speaker 1: have shared that I had a trail cam at my
- 35:44Speaker 1: fish shack and one of my buddy's wives went back
- 35:47Speaker 1: to pee by the camera and I still haven't gotten
- 35:49Speaker 1: my card back.
- 35:51Speaker 2: That one's just gone.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Now this guy, this guy, he writes in to say this,
- 35:54Speaker 1: I'm not going to give his name.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Does he give his name?
- 35:57Speaker 8: Nope?
- 35:58Speaker 2: Oh does he didn't even give his name.
- 35:59Speaker 8: He just said a loyal fan.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I have a slightly embarrassing trail cam story. I'd prefer
- 36:06Speaker 1: not to use my name for reasons that will become obvious.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I'm a divorced dad last summer started dating an amazing
- 36:14Speaker 1: divorced woman. This sounds like a match made in heaven.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Uh.
- 36:21Speaker 1: They have seven kids between them. His his gal is
- 36:27Speaker 1: a dairy farmer. Yeah, I'm in you got it. Yeah,
- 36:33Speaker 1: seven kids between them, it's hard to find alone time.
- 36:37Speaker 1: So they go back to a meadow back behind the
- 36:40Speaker 1: dairy farm to do what he has put in quotes
- 36:43Speaker 1: to picnic.
- 36:45Speaker 2: M he's using picnic as a euphemism because it's in quotes.
- 36:49Speaker 4: That's so wholesome.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Some neighbors.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Approached later to say, heads up, we have a trail
- 36:59Speaker 1: came back in that meadow, f y.
- 37:02Speaker 8: I oh no. They approached one of their teenage sons
- 37:10Speaker 8: who was driving a tractor in that that's right?
- 37:14Speaker 1: Would you mind telling your mom we have a trail
- 37:17Speaker 1: camp pointed at that medal, he says, well, sure, but why.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Don't worry just tell her.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Savage, I don't know why he's embarrassed. Who the guy
- 37:32Speaker 3: that caught got caught on a trail cam making sweet
- 37:37Speaker 3: light love to it? I don't know that.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I mean, I know he was picnicking.
- 37:40Speaker 4: He was picnicking. You do not want to see someone
- 37:43Speaker 4: picnicking on your trail cam.
- 37:46Speaker 2: You think he should be proud of that.
- 37:49Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think there's any reason for embarrassment.
- 37:52Speaker 4: I think the fact that they would go to the
- 37:54Speaker 4: seventeen year old child and tell him rather than going
- 37:58Speaker 4: to the adults. They should be the ones who are embarrassed,
- 38:01Speaker 4: the trailcam people.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:04Speaker 6: Man, life on the farm is different though, Like there's
- 38:06Speaker 6: a lot of love making, there's a lot of dying
- 38:08Speaker 6: going on around you all the time.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Yeah, Doug says life and death on the farm. Yeah,
- 38:12Speaker 4: he should start saying love and death on the farm.
- 38:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 38:16Speaker 1: A lot of confusion around dire wolves and a lot
- 38:18Speaker 1: of fighting. Seth Morris is even waded into this fight
- 38:21Speaker 1: and he's.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Not here today. We had an episode called archaeology OG.
- 38:26Speaker 8: That's what it was called, the the og of archaeology.
- 38:30Speaker 8: Why'd you change it around, It's just shorthand.
- 38:34Speaker 2: The og of archaeology. And we had a debate about
- 38:36Speaker 2: dire wolves. Were dire wolves ever? In Alaska?
- 38:42Speaker 1: Mike Cunns followed up. The body of research on dire
- 38:45Speaker 1: wolves indicates they evolved in the Western Hemisphere, probably North America,
- 38:50Speaker 1: and spread into Central and South America in the late
- 38:52Speaker 1: Plasis scene. They first appear in the paleontological record about
- 38:57Speaker 1: a quarter million years ago, becoming extinct at the end
- 39:01Speaker 1: of the place is seen about thirteen thousand years ago.
- 39:05Speaker 1: They appear to have been a creature of the temperate,
- 39:08Speaker 1: geographical and climatic zones. Only five records of dire wolves
- 39:15Speaker 1: come from areas north of forty two degrees latitude, which
- 39:18Speaker 1: is Chicago, like a warm weather southern wolf. The furthest
- 39:24Speaker 1: North example fifty degrees comes from Medicine Hat Alberta. If
- 39:31Speaker 1: you want to get a sense of like furthest North
- 39:33Speaker 1: and what that means as an outlider, I mean a
- 39:35Speaker 1: mountain lion once turned up where the Mackenzie River flows
- 39:38Speaker 1: into the you know, the Mackenzie Delta where the Mackenzie
- 39:41Speaker 1: River flows into the Arctic Ocean. Its ears had been
- 39:43Speaker 1: frozen off and part of its tail was frozen off.
- 39:46Speaker 1: But that's like a northern extreme where Seth ways into.
- 39:53Speaker 1: This is Seth's taken to watch and listening to the guy.
- 39:57Speaker 1: That's a guy to a gold miner that's been pulling
- 39:59Speaker 1: out a bone out of the ground in Alaska. And
- 40:04Speaker 1: it sounds like this guy is saying he can't turn
- 40:06Speaker 1: around without there being a dire wolf laying there. But
- 40:08Speaker 1: I don't know if he's having genetic lines extracted from
- 40:10Speaker 1: those or what what.
- 40:12Speaker 4: I don't know how he knows what he's looking at.
- 40:13Speaker 4: I mean, no, don't disrespect I covered that pretty well.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Uh yeah, have you watched any of that? Uh?
- 40:24Speaker 6: It like for folks who like picking stuff up off
- 40:27Speaker 6: the ground, like everybody in this room does. Like it's
- 40:30Speaker 6: it's fascinating. What is because your jealousy is so high,
- 40:34Speaker 6: like watching that dude digging the dirt all.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Day oh yeah, yeah, sneaking there at night, oh yeah.
- 40:42Speaker 6: And it's like they they can hydrologically mine, right, so
- 40:49Speaker 6: they can hit high pressure hose this hillside and just
- 40:52Speaker 6: like watch like Mammoth Tuss cave out.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Of it and you're just like, what have I been
- 40:58Speaker 3: doing with my life? Terrible?
- 41:01Speaker 2: Have you ever seen Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider?
- 41:03Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 41:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, one man.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like a Preacher and in the end he
- 41:08Speaker 1: gets so pissed he goes and puts his little preacher
- 41:11Speaker 1: collar in a lock box and takes his two pistols out.
- 41:14Speaker 1: There's a lot of hydraulic mining in that movie. It's
- 41:16Speaker 1: pretty interesting.
- 41:17Speaker 6: Yeah, that was They used some extras.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Out of Missoula, did they for that Pale Rider?
- 41:23Speaker 2: Yep?
- 41:23Speaker 6: Yeah, so it must have been filmed somewhere out here.
- 41:35Speaker 2: You ever seen a very similar plot line? Have you
- 41:37Speaker 2: seen Willie Nelson's Redheaded Stranger? No? I never have.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Oh god, it's a good movie and such a good album.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Shot another preacher, Yeah, shot her so quick.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Time to Warner. Is there a hydraulic mining in that
- 41:53Speaker 2: Redheaded Stranger? No, Pale Rider, A lot of it.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 4: You guys are very good on going off on tangents
- 41:59Speaker 4: like fantastic, this.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Is all like lockstep dude. Well, okay, we went with.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Went to hydraulic mining and priests collar, Priest collar brought
- 42:10Speaker 4: us to Willie Nelson song No movie.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I mean that's pretty amazing. Well, No, I was more
- 42:16Speaker 2: on preachers. Who was the Preacher? Pay a little clip
- 42:23Speaker 2: of that? Maybe film the Time of the Preacher when
- 42:30Speaker 2: the story began.
- 42:33Speaker 6: The scene where he goes and pulls pulls his guns
- 42:36Speaker 6: out out of the lock box because he has to
- 42:39Speaker 6: go to a bank or maybe it's a post office.
- 42:41Speaker 6: I assume it's a bank, goes and it has to like,
- 42:45Speaker 6: you know, stand in line, pull his box.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Out of his six shooters.
- 42:50Speaker 6: Hell, he takes the time to pull his his preacher's
- 42:53Speaker 6: collar off and put it in there, like, well, that'll
- 42:55Speaker 6: be there when I need it.
- 42:56Speaker 1: There's a harrowing scene in it where some old time
- 42:59Speaker 1: drunk he it's this huge nugget, yeah, like a huge
- 43:02Speaker 1: like he's like carrying it two hands and brings it
- 43:04Speaker 1: to the bad guys and they first they shoot his
- 43:07Speaker 1: nugget all the pieces and then blow them all the hell.
- 43:09Speaker 6: Right, because the bad have the big operation and these
- 43:13Speaker 6: guys are all plaster miners that are sticking to their claims,
- 43:18Speaker 6: but the big operation is buying out their claims. And
- 43:21Speaker 6: this guy strikes this nugget of untold wealth. That means
- 43:26Speaker 6: he will never give up his claim. And he's in
- 43:28Speaker 6: town living it up. And uh, he's got a couple
- 43:32Speaker 6: of boys too, a couple of sons, and he's basically
- 43:37Speaker 6: sticking it in the nose of the owner of the
- 43:41Speaker 6: big height, the big mine, and uh and uh, yeah,
- 43:47Speaker 6: it's a great scene, rubbing it in the face.
- 43:50Speaker 2: You want to hear a tangent, but I'm not gonna
- 43:53Speaker 2: do it.
- 43:55Speaker 1: You know that album Redheaded Stranger and the movie, there's
- 44:00Speaker 1: a great line on that album. Now the preaching is
- 44:03Speaker 1: over and the killing's begun.
- 44:06Speaker 6: Oh that's a great one.
- 44:08Speaker 1: I thought you're in someday where maybe I'm a bad
- 44:11Speaker 1: guy and you're a preacher vice versa.
- 44:13Speaker 6: I thought you're gonna go Sergio Leoni, so I would
- 44:17Speaker 6: have gone Sergio Leoni over to Once upon a Time
- 44:20Speaker 6: in Hollywood.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Mhmo. Yeah, that's good stuff.
- 44:26Speaker 2: You guys ever watched that? I don't. I don't like it.
- 44:29Speaker 2: But the kids show Octinouts.
- 44:32Speaker 5: I think my kids watched it back, and that's the
- 44:35Speaker 5: one where they go around underwater investigating different critters.
- 44:39Speaker 2: And they changed it recently where now they can do
- 44:41Speaker 2: land animals too. But there's a song and the old
- 44:44Speaker 2: one that goes creature report, Creature Report. I remember that
- 44:47Speaker 2: in the middle it's like dance break and they dance
- 44:52Speaker 2: Brody's gonna do a creature report.
- 44:54Speaker 5: Oh yeah, this is a funny one.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Chester going to cover.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Creature report.
- 45:03Speaker 5: No, this one's great, this is awesome. We we've talked
- 45:08Speaker 5: about the the well, it's not proposed the wolf planned
- 45:13Speaker 5: wolf freetru introduction in Colorado bunch, even though there's already
- 45:19Speaker 5: wolves moving in there on their own. They're going to
- 45:21Speaker 5: go forward with this plan. And uh, it turns out
- 45:25Speaker 5: they're having a real struggle getting wolves to reintroduce, which
- 45:30Speaker 5: I think is is kind of funny. No one wants
- 45:32Speaker 5: to give them any We are working hard to make
- 45:36Speaker 5: this happen, they say, we're we're on schedule to meet
- 45:39Speaker 5: our obligation to restore and manage gray wolves. That's Dan Gibbs,
- 45:44Speaker 5: executive director of the Colorado d n R. To meet
- 45:49Speaker 5: the deadline, Colorado needs wolves and their Their main sources
- 45:53Speaker 5: that they're looking to are are, of course, Idaho, Montana,
- 45:56Speaker 5: and Wyoming. And uh, it turns out that these states
- 46:04Speaker 5: are not willing to cooperate, even even though Colorado is saying,
- 46:09Speaker 5: you know, this is where they're going to get the wolves.
- 46:11Speaker 5: Greg Lemon from MFWP says, we have not been and
- 46:16Speaker 5: are not in conversations about wolving moving wolves to another state.
- 46:21Speaker 5: To be clear, we have not talked to and are
- 46:23Speaker 5: not talking to Colorado about moving wolves. An Idaho spokesperson
- 46:27Speaker 5: said the states have not had any formal conversations, and
- 46:31Speaker 5: Wyhoming says Wyoming is opposed to sending wolves to Colorado.
- 46:37Speaker 5: So their three main sources don't seem to be willing
- 46:41Speaker 5: to support the reintroduction, which I think is pretty interesting.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Why can't they get some of those same bad mother
- 46:47Speaker 1: liquors they sent down from Canada when they did the
- 46:51Speaker 1: Super Bowl?
- 46:51Speaker 6: Yeah, that that guy you know that well, the guy
- 46:54Speaker 6: that he knows knows the guy who trapped him.
- 46:57Speaker 2: That they pot with the stick found the meanest ones.
- 46:59Speaker 5: I'm not sure they might have to go back to
- 47:01Speaker 5: that source. But Colorado goes on to say they've had
- 47:04Speaker 5: conversations with Washington and Oregon also, but a Washington spokesperson
- 47:11Speaker 5: said they aren't sure what Colorado means about exploring an
- 47:14Speaker 5: agreement that could be on their end where they've just
- 47:19Speaker 5: done some research, we've had formal zero formal discussion. Oregon
- 47:25Speaker 5: has a similar response, and so for some reason, Colorado
- 47:31Speaker 5: also listed Utah as a possible source when Utah doesn't
- 47:35Speaker 5: even have any established packs and they're very against Colorado
- 47:40Speaker 5: reintroducing wolves because those wolves will just wander over into Utah.
- 47:44Speaker 5: So we'll see if Colorado gets it done by the deadline,
- 47:47Speaker 5: which is I think the end of this year.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Inadvertently or unintentionally, Wyoming has already stock has they have
- 48:00Speaker 1: There has been natural migration of wolves into Colorado. And
- 48:05Speaker 1: just to revisit this from the start, it was kind
- 48:07Speaker 1: of a strange irony is that at the same time
- 48:12Speaker 1: that this ballot initiative in Colorado, which the wording is
- 48:18Speaker 1: a little bit complicated, but basically a ballot initiative calling
- 48:22Speaker 1: for a wolf reintroduction in Colorado, at the same time
- 48:26Speaker 1: that that was making its way through the process, the
- 48:31Speaker 1: nature accomplished the goal and they had natural migration of
- 48:36Speaker 1: wolves into Colorado, which I thought negated the whole conversation.
- 48:40Speaker 1: But now certain key advocates for this are saying, oh,
- 48:43Speaker 1: that won't happen nearly fast enough, even though which I don't.
- 48:48Speaker 1: I haven't understood the logic of it, where why you'd
- 48:51Speaker 1: want to do something where you voiced like, why do
- 48:56Speaker 1: something so controversial when what you want is happening in
- 49:01Speaker 1: such a subtle, natural, uncontroversial.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Way, and that.
- 49:07Speaker 1: The end result in twenty years time, thirty years time,
- 49:10Speaker 1: you're gonna land in the same place.
- 49:11Speaker 5: Yep, exactly.
- 49:13Speaker 2: It's been like a puzzling it's been a puzzling move.
- 49:20Speaker 6: Just let nature do its thing. This is all about nature,
- 49:23Speaker 6: but we need it on our timeline, right, Yeah, it
- 49:27Speaker 6: makes zero sense. It's the approval under this administration is
- 49:33Speaker 6: what's what's driving it, right, And it's like, well, the
- 49:36Speaker 6: law says that we have to follow through on this
- 49:38Speaker 6: citizen's initiative and that has to happen on our timeline
- 49:44Speaker 6: or else it won't get done and we'll be in
- 49:46Speaker 6: violation of whatever the Colorado State constitution I imagine. But
- 49:50Speaker 6: on citizens' initiatives.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Yeah, what puzzles me about the citizens initiatives says like
- 49:54Speaker 1: you have to do exploration and move toward the goal
- 49:58Speaker 1: of restoring wolves in Colorado.
- 50:00Speaker 5: Find suitable areas to put them.
- 50:02Speaker 1: And yeah, so how would you not how would the
- 50:06Speaker 1: plan not be? And and I'll clarify, like I have
- 50:11Speaker 1: no animosity toward wolves, I have no animosity toward any
- 50:14Speaker 1: native wildlife. Uh, but just looking at it in a
- 50:19Speaker 1: social management scenario, why would the plan not be just
- 50:24Speaker 1: to not why would the plan not be just to
- 50:27Speaker 1: manage the wolves that are now in Colorado getting a
- 50:29Speaker 1: toe hold? How does I don't say how like i'd
- 50:32Speaker 1: have to have like a legal person explained. Why does
- 50:34Speaker 1: that not satisfy the question?
- 50:36Speaker 3: I think it might be that there was a.
- 50:39Speaker 5: Timeline attached to that that ballot initiative, like they needed
- 50:44Speaker 5: to be on the ground by x. There needed to
- 50:47Speaker 5: be x number of wolves by X date.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Was part of the original plan.
- 50:53Speaker 6: Yeah, like what what was the There is a number,
- 50:57Speaker 6: I've I've read it. I know y like what reintroduction
- 51:02Speaker 6: means and what satisfies like the population.
- 51:07Speaker 5: And there's still I think there's still questions regarding how
- 51:11Speaker 5: these wolves will be managed, whether they'll fall under the
- 51:14Speaker 5: ESA or whether they'll be an experimental population, which you
- 51:19Speaker 5: have big impacts on how they can be managed.
- 51:22Speaker 2: If they didn't put them in, they would they wouldn't
- 51:27Speaker 2: they wouldn't be under experimental right exactly.
- 51:31Speaker 5: But if they're introduced, they may very well fall under
- 51:34Speaker 5: that category.
- 51:35Speaker 2: I want to touch on this real quickly.
- 51:36Speaker 1: This is a This is like a little gamble people
- 51:38Speaker 1: make when they're doing in dangerous pieces of recovery.
- 51:42Speaker 2: There was for a long time a debate about whether
- 51:47Speaker 2: or not.
- 51:47Speaker 1: You would reintroduce grizzly bears into the Bitterroot Mountains in Montana.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And the deal they struck was if they did a
- 51:55Speaker 1: reintroduction to grizzly bears into the bitter Roots, they would
- 51:58Speaker 1: carry with them a non essential experimental designation, meaning it'd
- 52:08Speaker 1: be much easier to there there be it'd be it'd
- 52:11Speaker 1: be much easier for livestock owners to kill them. The
- 52:14Speaker 1: the self defense cases wouldn't be as strictly enforced, like
- 52:19Speaker 1: you you know, you wouldn't need to be like prove
- 52:22Speaker 1: that you were down to a life or death situation, right,
- 52:27Speaker 1: Just totally different management principle, or you just don't do
- 52:32Speaker 1: that and trust that they get there on their own,
- 52:34Speaker 1: because the minute one walks into that mountain range on
- 52:37Speaker 1: its own, it doesn't carry experimental designation. So you could
- 52:41Speaker 1: be like, okay, we'll go with the sure thing and
- 52:43Speaker 1: put some in and they have experimental, non essential or
- 52:47Speaker 1: bide our time and wait, a decade.
- 52:50Speaker 5: Hasn't didn't They didn't one turn up there recently?
- 52:54Speaker 6: I thought in the bitters, yeah, there's there's been a
- 52:57Speaker 6: bear that that's cruised through there. I think the Idaho
- 53:02Speaker 6: Fishing Game, you know, this is a frustrating thing for
- 53:06Speaker 6: a lot of people who are like, yeah, I saw
- 53:08Speaker 6: grizzly bear. That's a grizzly bear track. There's pictures, there's everything. Well,
- 53:11Speaker 6: the state agency can't be like, yep, you're right right.
- 53:13Speaker 6: They have to prove it if they're going to make
- 53:16Speaker 6: a positive statement. And so they were able to get
- 53:19Speaker 6: a DNA at that site and get it verified as
- 53:25Speaker 6: grizzly DNA. So Idaho Fishing Game probably two summers ago,
- 53:29Speaker 6: said like, yes, we know for a fact that there
- 53:31Speaker 6: is a grizzly bear in this general zone. And it
- 53:36Speaker 6: was actually more on like the clear Water side, so
- 53:40Speaker 6: you know, much more on the Idaho side than the
- 53:44Speaker 6: Montana side of the bitter It Range there. But we
- 53:49Speaker 6: know that bears have traveled successfully, like across the I
- 53:52Speaker 6: ninety corridor, which is seen as a huge break in
- 53:57Speaker 6: migration because it is so massive there. Yeah, daunting cutting
- 54:03Speaker 6: through the Panhandle to Idaho. So but I mean I
- 54:08Speaker 6: will tell you, like from personal experience, in the early
- 54:10Speaker 6: two thousands, we cut grizzly bear tracks in the Sapphire Range.
- 54:15Speaker 6: During it would have been like the height of this
- 54:17Speaker 6: conversation on putting like physically moving grizzly into the bitter Roots, which.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Is effectively the bitter Roots.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I mean it's like an easy little stroll across ninety
- 54:27Speaker 1: three or.
- 54:27Speaker 6: Something, right, Yeah, well across the valley, across the Bitteret Valley.
- 54:31Speaker 6: But that was really wild, you know. And you're like
- 54:34Speaker 6: much more hospitable range than the Bitter Roots are for
- 54:38Speaker 6: sure as far as like finding food and stuff.
- 54:40Speaker 3: But yeah, that was And.
- 54:42Speaker 6: Then so the Rock Creek drainage is right there, as
- 54:46Speaker 6: we know from meat Eater trivia. The US largest forests
- 54:50Speaker 6: that we have in Montana, the Beaverhead National Forest, is uh,
- 54:55Speaker 6: you know, grizzly bear tracks right in the middle of it.
- 54:58Speaker 1: So, speaking of grizzly bears, I think there's going to
- 55:02Speaker 1: be a renewed push like the US Fish and Wildlife
- 55:05Speaker 1: Service I think will again request that grizzly bears delist
- 55:10Speaker 1: get delisted soon. I don't think that will go anywhere there,
- 55:16Speaker 1: it gets held up on the idea that they're not
- 55:19Speaker 1: recovered across the entirety of their range, so you can't
- 55:23Speaker 1: recover you can't declare them recovered.
- 55:25Speaker 2: In certain areas.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Following that logic would be that elk would be listed
- 55:32Speaker 1: as an e s A species. The elk would be
- 55:35Speaker 1: protected by the Endangered Species Act, big horn sheep would
- 55:40Speaker 1: be protected by the Endangered Species Act. Wolves be protected
- 55:43Speaker 1: by the Endangered Species Act. Black bears would be protected
- 55:47Speaker 1: by the Endangered Species Act.
- 55:51Speaker 2: What am I missing?
- 55:53Speaker 3: Oh?
- 55:53Speaker 6: I mean coyotes hmm, that's a weird one.
- 56:00Speaker 3: Mule deer perhaps blacktail, I'm sure would.
- 56:04Speaker 2: Be protected by the Endangered Species Act.
- 56:07Speaker 1: So the logic that you can't delist something in one
- 56:14Speaker 1: place because it's not recovered in another. I don't know
- 56:18Speaker 1: that Golden Gate Park will ever have a sustainable population
- 56:24Speaker 1: of grizzly bears. Yeah, though that damn sure was grizzly.
- 56:31Speaker 6: Country on menus in San Francisco?
- 56:36Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 56:37Speaker 3: Really?
- 56:38Speaker 8: In what years all.
- 56:40Speaker 6: That gold Rush era, right about the time they made
- 56:45Speaker 6: Pale Rider?
- 56:50Speaker 4: Can I ask something? First of all, I want to
- 56:52Speaker 4: apologize for zoning out. I was just trying to figure
- 56:54Speaker 4: out what the one food was that's lowering my testosterone?
- 56:58Speaker 2: Did you watch the thing?
- 56:59Speaker 3: I tell you I did.
- 57:01Speaker 4: I was watching the video while you guys were talking
- 57:02Speaker 4: about that. That's why I was not a part of
- 57:04Speaker 4: the conversation. I'm back.
- 57:07Speaker 2: And I just wanted to say sesame seeds.
- 57:10Speaker 3: Oh thank you.
- 57:10Speaker 4: But also, what is the what is the best argument
- 57:14Speaker 4: for introducing reintroducing wolves and the worst argument or the
- 57:20Speaker 4: best m best argument for and best argument against in
- 57:24Speaker 4: you know, just just like in thirty seconds for each.
- 57:29Speaker 1: The best argument for reintroducing wolves, in my view, we
- 57:32Speaker 1: can go around the table as much as people want
- 57:33Speaker 1: to speak to it. The best argument for reintroducing wolves
- 57:36Speaker 1: is it was human activities that eliminated them from much
- 57:42Speaker 1: of their historic range. In particular, it was an activity
- 57:46Speaker 1: that we now find to be deplorable, which was indiscriminately
- 57:51Speaker 1: spreading poison laced carcasses out on the landscape. And it
- 57:57Speaker 1: is a sin against God and man to determine that
- 58:03Speaker 1: certain species that were placed here on the Earth should
- 58:08Speaker 1: be eliminated because they're inconvenient.
- 58:10Speaker 2: To us, okay, And it's a.
- 58:13Speaker 1: Sin against nature to go and eliminate things from planet
- 58:17Speaker 1: Earth because they're inconvenient. The argument against restoring them in
- 58:24Speaker 1: Colorado is it will have and they all try to
- 58:27Speaker 1: dodge this, but it's true, it will have catastrophic impacts
- 58:33Speaker 1: on big game populations in Colorado. But hunters are naughty
- 58:38Speaker 1: to say. It's like naughty for a hunter to say,
- 58:41Speaker 1: I don't really like this because it's going to affect
- 58:45Speaker 1: elk and deer hunting so negatively. It's supposed to be
- 58:48Speaker 1: that you're not supposed to care about that, but people
- 58:51Speaker 1: care about.
- 58:51Speaker 2: That a lot.
- 58:53Speaker 4: And what do you mean they're not supposed to care
- 58:55Speaker 4: about who's saying that.
- 58:56Speaker 1: It's supposed to be that like that, that's not a
- 58:58Speaker 1: legitimate that's not a legitimate concern.
- 59:01Speaker 2: There's one very advocate.
- 59:03Speaker 1: There's one all the wolf introductions. Is this one guy
- 59:08Speaker 1: that plays in all the Wolf for Re introductions and
- 59:09Speaker 1: he refers to hunters as the recreational big game killing industry.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Okay, got it, that's that's two.
- 59:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:24Speaker 6: The loss of damaged property livestock specifically is.
- 59:33Speaker 3: A big one.
- 59:35Speaker 6: Wolves definitely get in mess with with domestic flocks of
- 59:40Speaker 6: sheep for sure, cattle and the legal ease of like
- 59:48Speaker 6: how you navigate that with personal property rights? And another
- 59:54Speaker 6: animal that's not even yet a game species that can
- 59:57Speaker 6: be managed effectively through the game agencies, because it's in
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: this limbo of like, well, who manages it the fed
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: through the state, and does it get such special status
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: that if it's attacking your property, can you kill it?
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: Can you get rid of it like you would with
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: like a coyote incident or something like that. So there's
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: a lot of things there in the management that people
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: are like, why would we even want to deal with that?
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: And specifically to Colorado, it's like you have wolves that
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: have already walked into the state, which is an area
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: that most people I feel that get wrapped up in
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: this argument can agree that, like, well they did it
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: on their own. So now we're in it whether we
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: want to or not, and we can deal with it
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: because it's been put on the table in front of us,
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: versus one side saying that we need to drop them
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: in here with the big black helicopters that everybody fears.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: Got it.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Let me hate with no one, he said thirty seconds.
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Well no, I thought him, no one.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: This is going to sound conspiratorial, but I do think
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: that I do think it's true the same way that
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: individual that I just mentioned refers to the recreational big
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: game killing industry.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: I think that there is that. I'm not normally a
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: conspiratorial person.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Right, I think that there are a lot of pro
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: wolf advocates that have that would like.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: To stick it to big game hunters. Oh. Absolutely.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: That didn't seem like a conspiracy to me. That's not
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: even a conspiracy. Pretty sentiment easy. I think it's like,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: it's like they'd like to stick it to big game hunters. Yeah, okay,
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: I mean if if you're going out and calling it
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: the industrial yeah whatever, then yeah, that seems like that's
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: exactly what you're doing.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like, oh, so does the surplus of deer
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: and elklets. I'd rather feed it to wolves and feed
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: it to the rednecks.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: That's wow. That is so dogmatic, Like that's so crazy
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: that they're willing to go that far. Their hate for
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: hunters is willing to just kind of up end the
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: whole balance.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: They love wolves, and they got on sixty minutes.
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: Wasn't there like a sixty minutes piece called like that
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: was showing how amazing this was.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: I feel like I remember watching that.
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: Oh the debunked what's that.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, how the wolves ship rainbows or something trop
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: is like that was a real popular idea for a while.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: The debunked, Yeah, I.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Got no problem with wolves. Man, When I see a wolf,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I get real excited. Yeah, but what I do have
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: a problem is just.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Like mounding so much bs onto it.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: And we had a woman on, Diane Boyd, who was
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: very instrumental in like is the the wolf biologists for
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Montana And she even says she advocated for this at
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the time, and in hindsight she still feels that she
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: was correct that they shouldn't have done the Yellowstone. In
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Frank Church reintroductions, wolves are coming in from Canada, and
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: she said, I just think from a public perception standpoint
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: and for the sake of how wolves are perceived, just
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: give it time and let them show up.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: And that's coming from someone who it's their job to
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: think about this and they're pro wolf. Right. It's like
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: you'd get there anyways. You'd get there anyways, and it
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: wouldn't be that you wouldn't turn wolves into the new
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: spot at owl.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: Right right, right, Well, that's it all comes back down
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: to this, back around to this citizen's initiative and about
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: how none of this is these actions are based on
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: science or the will of scientists.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but I don't even know what that means anymore.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: I know what you're saying, But no, everybody besides the
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: public the voted for it is saying no. I mean,
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: the rest of this proves it. Right here, there's six
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: other states that are like, let us save you from
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: your own dumb ass cells, and we won't ship you
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: any wolves.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Right, you know there is there is wolf hunting a thing.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Sure, Yeah, in where so they have been delisted in
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: they delist.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Them in areas.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: So there's this there's this idea called distinct population segments, and.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: They've overlaid it. Originally it was lower forty eight. Okay.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: They've then gone on and gotten a little more surgical,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: and they've created these areas where they.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: Look at around the country, what are areas it could
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: feasibly support the animals.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: So with grizzlies, what there's five or six So there's
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: there's five or six habitat core habitat.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: Areas that could support grizzlies. One doesn't have any.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: So it's North Cascades, Bitterroot cell Way mm hmm, the
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Northern Continental Divide Cabinet, Yack cabinet, yack, g WAT, Greater Yellowstone.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: How many is that?
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Greater Yellowstone, Northern Continental Divide, Northern Cascade, Northern Cascade Cabinet, Yack.
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: Cabinet, YAC bitter at So yeah.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: For one doesn't have them, or Northern Cascade has maybe
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: depending on where it's standing at any given time, has
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: a couple that moved back and forth from Canada. So
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: they've gone and said, Okay, it's not gonna be the
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Lower forty eight. My joke about Golden Gate Park. It's
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: not gonna be Golden Gate Park. Where could it be?
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: It could be in these places. And what they've done
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: is they've enabled it to to propose delisting an area.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: So currently, everyone who has any academic perspective, like anyone
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: who's assigned with just tell me empirically, are they recovered
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: or not recovered in sustainable way? Any biologist who looks
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: at this from any federal agency, state agencies are like
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: Greater Ye also an ecosystem, yes, Northern Continental Divide ecosystem yes,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: meaning they're not conservation dependent. You could dlist those populations
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: are grizzly bears and they're fine they're fine.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: With wolves. They've done Northern Great Lakes and it's their
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: back listed, all right.
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: It waffles back and forth so much, but there was
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: hunting off and on there over the last decade or so.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: So you can't keep track. So like Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: But well beyond recovery, like way way pass, recovery goals right, And.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: When people say recovery goals is at a time. They
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: came at a time every all the different stakeholders got
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: together and they said, what what does recovery look like?
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: What's an acceptable recovery? And they came up with I
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: think for they come up with a pack, like how
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: many packs and different parameters. With grizzly bears, they came
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: up with how many how many bears? So they all agreed,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty bears in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: We all agree that would be phenomenal. That'd be wonderful
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: if we could hit that. Sure, we all would sign
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: off that that is recovered. That's phenomenal. Okay, now, what
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: do you got A thousand? Are they recovered?
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: No?
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Because I said that in order to get what I
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: wanted at the time, But I didn't mean that. What
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I meant was they're.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Never going to be recovered.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: You're never going to pull them off the endangered species
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: list because the main you do, hellbillies and rednecks will
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: be able to kill them, and I don't want that
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: to happen. So the goalpost just moves and moves and moves,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: and it creates tremendous animosity. The biggest argument with the
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: DPS thing is if you if you how like a
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: person who doesn't believe in any d listing would look
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: and say, if you delist grizzlies in Northern Conental Divide ecosystem,
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: and you delist grizzlies in the Yellowstone ecosystem, how can
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: you guarantee to me that that's not going to impact
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: cabinet yack or that that's not going to impact bitterroot
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: cell way Because where else would that recovery come from
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: but those two areas. So if you're gonna make it
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: that there's going to be more human cause mortality in
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: those areas, then I'm going to argue that any surplus
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: of bears you're killing there, you're killing bears that might.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Have been migrating to these other area.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Come to these so don't tell me that it's a
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: distinct population set. This is the argument against it, right, Like,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: don't tell me it's distinct, because nothing's distinct.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Things move around. You can't undo this and not impact that.
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: And connectivity is the is like the biggest buzzword in
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: this argument. Got it, Like, show me the connectivity. So
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: because also they want to re examine, like what does
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: recovered mean, right? Does it mean right now in our
- 1:09:05Speaker 6: snapshot of time or does it mean forever? And in
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: order for a forever recovered goalpost, there has to be
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: genetic exchange between these groups for the long term viability
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: of the species, right or else you're gonna hit this
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: stopping point that does have a name that I can't
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: remember what we talked about with mountain lions and the
- 1:09:28Speaker 6: Santa Monicas forever ago, where they hit this cliff and
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: all of a sudden, that population's gone because it's just
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: bred itself into non existence essentially because it's just swapping
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: the same gene back and forth. So connectivity is a
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: big deal, which is why when these bears do show
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: up in the clear water on the opposite side of
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: the bitter Roots and wander around that part of Idaho.
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: It's a big deal because it does show that a
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: bear from the NCDE has traversed these big on paper
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: obstacles of like the I ninety corridor or high human
- 1:10:09Speaker 6: population areas. And then what Steve's saying too is about
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: like this higher human cause mortality that is generally accepted
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: as the case, but it's also I think what a
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: lot of biologists would tell you is something that we
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: don't really know because there is so much human cause
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: mortality occurring right now while these bears are federally protected,
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: we don't honestly know how that number of vehicle strikes,
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: conflict incidents with livestock, with hikers, people feeling threatened on
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: the trail, etc.
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: A lot of grizzlies get shot by fishing game a lot,
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: and they get in trouble.
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: A lot, And oftentimes it's like the people who are
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: actively trying to get to these recovery benchmarks who have
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: to go out and kill the damn bears because somebody
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: didn't lock up their stupid fricking garbage can, right and literally,
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: you're killing this bear that's been put so high up
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: on a pedestal by not locking up your garbage can
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: and the thing comes and roots through it for leftover watermelonines, right,
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: and it's like, well that's a learned behavior. We got
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: to get rid of it because eventually it's gonna bump
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: into you in your bathroom filling up the garbage can, right,
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: you might get tickled. So all of these things come
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: together to be like what is recovery? And you know,
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: but every year we're addressing more and more of this,
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: like protecting migration corridors. The Infrastructure Act that just went
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: through provided a shitload of funding for like wildlife overpasses
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: and under asses across these huge obstacles like the I
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: ninety corridor, and you know, as we see those things implemented,
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: we are removing all these excuses. But there's this issue
- 1:12:13Speaker 6: fatigue that we always deal with in the conservation world,
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: which is like, well, we've been We've been doing the thing.
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: We have been funding things in municipalities for bear proof containers,
- 1:12:25Speaker 6: we have been eliminating shed hunting seasons on these slopes
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: that are used by wintering big game. And we've been
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: doing all the things because you told us we are
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: going to get this animal d list. And that's where
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: the frustrations, just like always keep coming up. It's like
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: the goalpost keep getting moved. And yeah, to Steve's point,
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: there is absolutely a faction out there that's like the
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: bear is so powerful, the wolf is so powerful as
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: a tool a symbol of the ESA that it is
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: how we are protecting other species that people don't really
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: want to talk about, the charismatic megafauna. Right is the
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: is the thing on the flag, but it actually is
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: how we're protecting, you know, the freshwater muscles that are
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: super important to our fresh water system, but nobody truly
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: gives a shit about.
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: Yeah, right, So I don't think answered your question though.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I what I'm realizing is that you guys
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: have no concept of what thirty seconds is.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Yeah, you want to hear a good still on this show, but.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Wyoming.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: So if you look at the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, the
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: official number is seven hundred or seven fifty grizzlies.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: But even the but the guy.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: That did that number knows that number is not right.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: And he said on this podcast, Frank was Huga Hugo
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: type in grizzly bear, Frank USGS Hugomeyer. We had a
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: guest on who so the USGS isn't a policy organization.
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: They are a fact gathering organization. The facts they gather
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: are then used by policymakers.
- 1:14:13Speaker 8: Frank vinn mannon that's.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: No, is it.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Yeah? The guy that headed up the interagency study.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm thinking the wrong. Damn Frank, what's his name?
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: Frank van mann In.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: He says they used a model that he doesn't think
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: is accurate anymore. But it's hard to change the official number.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: But he says, so, he's like, there's probably a thousand
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: in the Greater Yelstone ecosystem, which is about Indiana. It's
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: a chunk of ground about the size of Indiana that
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: sits in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, whatever portion of those
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: is in Wyoming. There's an interesting statistic where this is.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Years ago, Wyoming was spending two because of the ESA issues.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: You know, Wyoming spends two million bucks a year on
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: the Bears, and someone once did the math and realized
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: it's an expensive critter for them for the states.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: I went to Yellowstone yesterday. I took a drive there,
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: didn't see any bears.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: You could try to get your money back.
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: What was your Google review?
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: If I could give it half a star?
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: I don't get it all right, So talking about this
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Food Network show, Raid the Fridge. It's a goofy show.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: It's on Discovery Plus.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: It's fun.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: It's pretty fun. It came from the fact you used
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: to take pictures of people's fridges. Well, my podcast Greenecks
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: and dan Is I interviewed very very very famous celebrities.
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: Steve Varnella was a guest, and it's all based on
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: a picture of the inside of your fridge, and then
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: we go down that rabbit hole of you know, your
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: relationship to food. But yeah, I took all these I
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: have all these pictures of celebrit these fridges. It's my
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: kink and the Food Network saw that and they're like,
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: we want to turn this into a show. So it's
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: it became a Raid the Fridge, which is a it's
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: a food competition show. You got three chefs, they have
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: three mystery fridges. They have no idea what's in the fridge.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: They can only choose a fridge based on the pictures
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: and the magnets outside. Once they open that fridge, time starts.
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: I feel like, well, it is fun, but I am
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: also like I love doing it, but I'm also like
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: very anti where like food TV has gone. I feel
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: like it's just become these very aggressive competition shows that
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: are aggressive. Like I loved when we were younger, and
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: it was just like the Food Network was like a
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: nice person inviting you into their kitchen to show you
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: how to cook something.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Are you talking on the place where you work right now?
- 1:16:45Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I am right now.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: That's bold.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: But now everything is like it's like you come back
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: from the commercial break with like heavy metal. It's like,
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: welcome back to kitchen genocide, death battle Roy. Yeah, Mary
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: just got sent home because there pot pie tasted like
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: sweaty dick.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: It's like, what's happening? What happened? Food Network?
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: Leaving our roommating two contestants. For your final challenge, you
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: will give given a rabbit, a hammer, and three springs
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: of dill. You've got ten minutes to make dessert. Time
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: starts as soon as I slaughter this lamb. It's like, what, Yeah,
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: it's gone too aggressive, man.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: Well my understanding, yeah, you just prayed a pretty graphic picture.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: My understanding is food Network. This blew my mind. Maybe
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: you can correct me. MI understanding is that Food Network
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: will not allow a head to be on a fish.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Really. Oh, I have no idea, just learn that.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: And I was like, dude, half the restaurants in New
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: York you can get a fish with a head on it.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: Wait, is that true? That's what I heard you.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: I am going to call my buddy who's in charge
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: of all the food of Food network on smartphone right now.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: I heard that you can't use the barber hook on
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: the Bighorn River.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: It's illegal.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I've just I heard this on very from a very
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: good source that there you will not find a fish's
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: head on that network. You cannot do whole fried thie fish.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: I heard you can't have Wow, it's exciting podcast and
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: knives present at the same time alcohol because.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: You're going to get wasted and cut yourself.
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: As as happens.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: And is this suspense killing you like it's killing me.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: I don't think they're going to answer because most people don't.
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: Yeah, you know why, because you're like I have a
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: very good friend.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: It's like ten times that I try to call my wife,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: she'll answer one time.
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: Well that's not a good things.
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: Oh man, all right.
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: No, no head's on fish, No heads on fish. I
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: don't that's crazy. If that's true. I'm a huge I
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: don't know if you guys know this about it.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Let's do the fish head. Let's do this.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Why don't you go with just one of these fridges,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: put a fish with the head on it and see
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: what happens.
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: I mean, I feel like we've had some gnarly stuff
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: on there. I can't imagine a fishhead being that.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: No head's on fish.
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: Didn't you get thrown in Instagram jail for showing a
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: picture of a valid king salmon one time?
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Yeah? I forgot about that.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: That's pretty ridiculous.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: So, okay, talk me about the book. Did you do
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: your own audiobook?
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Did your own read? I did, and it was very
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: It was an awful experience. Plug the book a little bit.
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: Okay, So the book is undercooked. You can get it
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: anywhere you get books. It's an Amazon bestseller right now
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: in the category of books by Dana Dude, and it
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: is killing it.
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: It is uh.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: It's a comedic food memoir standalone chapters, each of them
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: about food, but they're also funny and there's a lot
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: of heart, and there's also a bunch of hunting chapters which.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: They tried to come down. The man tried to come
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: down on you about hunt.
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: The man tried to come down and they wanted to.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: They're like, you need to take out one of these
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: hunting chapters. You've got too much hunting. When what's their
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: argument because they were like, it's a food book and
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: people want to buy a food book.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: They don't want to hear about you going hunting.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: Because the two are like not related.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Yeah exactly. But I fought and I kept I kept a.
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Tense fight, like words exchanged.
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: You know, there was It's very interesting when you write
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: a book, you have to it's it's very like pick
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: your battles on what you're gonna put in and what
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: you're not going to put in. So, uh, for example,
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: I there was a line in it about Anthony Bourdain
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: committing suicide, and they were like, you can't say committing
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: suicide he died by suicide. You have to write he
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: died by suicide. And I was like, walk me through
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: that one. So the whole thing about that is that
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: suicide is a mental health thing and that it's not
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: in your control that.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: You're actually committing. It's happening to you.
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: It's sort of it wasn't a question of his commitment.
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: Right exactly, which I was like, that feels weird to me,
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: and but it didn't feel weird enough where I was
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: going to fight for that, so that I wasn't going
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: to fight for something else, so you know what I mean.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: So it was a lot of that happening where you
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: had to pick your battles, and so the hunting one
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: was where I kind of stood my ground because it's
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: basically the there's a chapter on elk hunting, which is
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: basically two chapters in one, and then there's a chapter
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: on kosier hunting and then stuff about uh, goose hunting
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: in the beginning.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: But you know it's pronounced cows, is it really? No,
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: that's not true.
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: It's true.
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: I just looked at Steve. That's not true. The gentleman's
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: name was cows.
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: Okay, but yeah, so we kept it in so and look,
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: I part of my thing, part of the thing with
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: this book is that I know that a lot of
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: like let's call it coastal elites will be reading this
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: because it's like a popular food book and they want
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: to read about food. So I think it's exciting to
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: kind of flank them with the hunting stuff when they
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: don't expect it coming, and I've had so many people
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: say to me, I never thought about hunting until I
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: read your chapters, and now I could even like entertain
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: going on a hunt, which is pretty cool.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: Do you believe in coastal elites?
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: Yes, you do, one hundred percent.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: Are you one of them?
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: I am adjacent. I'm coastal elite adjacent, you know, But
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: I mean I live in laing that you.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Just don't make quite enough money to be an elite
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: or I mean, I don't know, I'm trying to I
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: don't think it means either.
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: Know how to du Pont or Rockefeller or Roosevelt or no.
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: I am as kids dudes will be amongst that crowd.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you're not an a dute.
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: No.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: I just feel like there is a group think that
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: happens on in the big city group and if you're
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: not a part of it, you're kind of excommunicated. So
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: even coming on your podcast for the first time was
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: like coming out of closet for me in a way.
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: Just talking about the fact that I'm a hunter, that
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: I own guns was like, you know, I got a
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: lot of a lot of crap for that within my community,
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: and I definitely know, yeah, I mean, I definitely know
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: of people who are probably won't say it outright, but
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: you definitely know that's the reason that you're not hanging
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: out as much. It's I'm telling you, it's a thing.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: It's a thing in LA and New York, and that's
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: a good.
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: Way to just like, you know, skim the scum off
- 1:23:47Speaker 5: the top anyway.
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I mean I think so, But it's it is,
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: especially when you're entertainment. Though in entertainment it's even another
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: level of you know, you gotta watch what you do
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: and watch it.
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: I was very excited and surprised to hear you name
- 1:24:02Speaker 7: drop meat Eater on Comedy Bang Bang this Week, which
- 1:24:04Speaker 7: is one of my favorite podcasts.
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that's probably the first time you guys have been
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: mentioned on Comedy Bank, the most the most like nerdy
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: comedy podcast in the country. But yeah, look this is
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: But I think this is why this book is interesting
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: is because I'm I've always kind of straddled those two
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: places of like, I love fine dining, I love good food,
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: I love going to great restaurants, but then like I
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: love going hunting and I love getting dirty and doing
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: those things as well. So I can't tell you how
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: many times I've had to explain to people the fact
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: that hunters give more money to conservation than all conservation
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: you know, environmental groups combined. And this is a fact
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: that I got from you, which.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: I keep well. And that's a bold statement. I mean
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: it is. I wouldn't put that that way.
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: Why not with the what is that law? That the
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: money from the AMMO and the money from.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: The A lot. But you're just using very broad strokes.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: You told me to say, none, screw those environmental groups.
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: We give more money than they ever will. No, it's
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: a but here's.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: You're using such broad strokes that you get into hard definitional.
- 1:25:19Speaker 5: Easy to poke holes in it.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, the hard definition. But here's the thing.
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: Most people wouldn't even know that that hunters give a
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: dollar to conservation.
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: That's very true.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: So even opening their eyes to that, I think, is
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: that that's the best place I think to start the conversation.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: There was recently an op ed I think it was
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: in the New York Times, and it was arguing that
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: they don't like the Pittman. This guy was saying, I
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: don't like the Pittman robertson money for conservation. It shouldn't
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: go to conservation because it's blood money, meaning he doesn't
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: want to. He doesn't think that gun and AMMO money
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: has a place in wildlife conservation because it's wildlife conservation
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: taking blood money.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: I mean it's kind of a that it's that argument
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: about and correct me if I'm wrong here, But a
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: lot of the big game hunting in Africa, like where
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: you want to kill a line or something, you have
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: to pay like a couple hundred thousand dollars to do that,
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: and then doesn't most of that money go to conservation.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, we got some guys coming in pretty soon. There
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: are subject matter experts on that. We tried it before
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: with someone.
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: Roger Hurt and Morgan, I don't know, as like Potter.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: There you go, they're all super excited about that. Well, so, yeah,
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: I said I was having some Tanzanians over for dinner.
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: No, he didn't tell me that didn't First of all,
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: if you said that to him, how could he ever
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: forget that? Remember I said of having some Tanzanians over
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: for dinner? I mean, yeah, So it's like the optics
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: of that, I understand for a non hunter are really awful, right,
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: But it still kind of makes sense, especially if in
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: places where they're not going to get anywhere near that
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: amount of conservation money.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: But you you haven't. Has your career suffered at all?
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: Like did you feel like you lost out on jobs
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: or lost out on gigs or anything. I don't use
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: the word gigs. Yes, you can, you can. We're back
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: in the eighties.
- 1:27:30Speaker 6: Everyone, Yeah, and refer to it as the biz.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: Please let me tell you about the biz. Look.
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: I think that it kind of it probably even out
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: the amount of fans that I lost because of that
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: I gained on the other side, you know what I mean.
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: And I feel like, especially like with this book. This
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: book is kind of it's something that I don't think
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: anyone else could really write because I do have a
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: weird skill set of I don't think that there's any
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: comedian hunter, foodies who kind of who do all those
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: three things. I think it's like.
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: I know one guy, the simple comedian, hunter, foody. Who
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: do you got the one guy that does podcast too pretty?
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: He's got a pretty big one, I don't think, but
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: the thing doesn't quite qualify as foody. But he likes
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: to take pictures of his food and post it to Instagram.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: He does like to take pictures of his food.
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: But I mean, I've interned in Michelin Star kitchens, you know,
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: like I've worked in restaurants. I've I'm getting wine certification
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: right now.
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: Take that, Rogan. Take that.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: I like you. I like you where you're coming from.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: But I'm saying like, I think mixing those three things
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: is something that that having come out of the closet
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: with hunting is what gave me that special skill set
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: that I think got me a book deal that was
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: able to get. If I was just like, I'm a
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: guy who loves food and I'm funny, I don't think
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: I would have gotten a book deal. I think it was. Oh,
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: this is interesting because he's got all these different weird
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: ways of coming about food.
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: I find it very interesting that the people in food
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: circles have such a wild and wide diet, whereas if
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: you're coming from like real rural America, like deep hunting culture,
- 1:29:26Speaker 6: it's not it's like very meat and potatoes, right, And
- 1:29:30Speaker 6: it's those people who are like, ooh, I'm not sure
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: if I'd eat that, whereas I, you know, I just
- 1:29:36Speaker 6: cooked a bunch of Canada goose for some folks that
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: are not in the hunting circles at all, very removed
- 1:29:44Speaker 6: from it, and there was I would say, far less
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: hesitation to eating Canada goose on my table. As if
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: I would have put even this group of hunters in
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: this room down at the table and be like, really,
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: Canada goose, you'd be like really, it's like, you know,
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: bringing a bunch of spoon.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: Bills to Hawaii, but you know, like you get fence.
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: Did you do that? I did that? Yeah twice.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: Now it's like, oh, you brought the scrap ducks. Huh.
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: But that always strikes me as as very odd. Right,
- 1:30:22Speaker 6: It's like, oh, you'll eat you know, lamb liver and
- 1:30:27Speaker 6: rabbits and ducks and eels and you know, over one
- 1:30:32Speaker 6: sitting at some fine dining establishment. And then this idea
- 1:30:39Speaker 6: of only good money, only pure money, can go to
- 1:30:44Speaker 6: pure causes, right when we all know that people are
- 1:30:47Speaker 6: just a bunch of freaks and what they do in
- 1:30:51Speaker 6: their own homes when people aren't watching like that, then
- 1:30:58Speaker 6: being like, oh but we can't have your money because
- 1:31:01Speaker 6: of this, right, It's like it's just I mean, it's
- 1:31:03Speaker 6: such a just a bizarre this wizar.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: This expression is so tired now, but it's like it's
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: virtue signaling, right. It's like they know that it's hypocritical
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: to say that because the money that goes into you know,
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: they're fine to eat a steak at a restaurant that
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: God knows how that poor thing was raised. But then
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: this is blood money going into hunting. And in fact,
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: I think hunters in a lot of ways are way
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: bigger foodies than pretentious foodies are, because like you're saying,
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: like you guys were just making a joke about knowing
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: the nuances of different species of duck and how they taste.
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: I don't think most people would know, like, oh, this
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: lamb that I'm eating was from an older animal or
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: a younger animal, or it was you know, it was
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: killed in this season, or they don't know anything about that.
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: You know, you maybe you'll have different grades like a
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: five wagoo versus you know, choice or prime. But in
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: terms of this stuff that you guys are like students
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: of I think it's way more interesting and nuanced in
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: terms of like, oh, I can tell what the diet
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: of this animal was based on how it tastes. Like
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: that to me seems way more advanced foody than like, oh,
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: I just had a five hundred dollars meal at the
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: French laundry where you just are like showing, you know,
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: you're just going and spending a lot of money and
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: having them talk to you about what farm this animal
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: was was, you.
- 1:32:22Speaker 6: Know what they would wouldn't talk about. We shot a
- 1:32:24Speaker 6: turkey this year in Hawaii that its crop was the
- 1:32:31Speaker 6: most full crop I've ever seen, and I take them
- 1:32:35Speaker 6: all out right, So it's the top end of the
- 1:32:37Speaker 6: digestive system for for a turkey.
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got all the rocks and.
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: That's the next stage, right, Sorry, but the crops like
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: this great little balloon, it's just a grocery bag, yeah, basically. Yeah,
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: and uh and it's always super interesting to see what's
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: in there. Well, we pull this prop out and it
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: is it's enormous to begin with, but it is chalk
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: full with absolutely nothing but maggots.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: Oh he hit the magot, you know you'd get I
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: guarantee you as a dead rotten hog.
- 1:33:16Speaker 6: No, so, okay, I know I know exactly what it
- 1:33:19Speaker 6: was because you could smell it, and I had asked
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: about it, and they agriculture operation they had brought in
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: a huge load of fish and they had actually they
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: actually have like a giant compost pile that they had
- 1:33:36Speaker 6: stirred up with this fish to make their own awesome
- 1:33:41Speaker 6: super compost. Well, all that fish had been fermenting, and
- 1:33:46Speaker 6: the maggots were wriggling out, and so all these birds
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: and mongooses and all this stuff was on top of
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: that compost pile, and unbeknownst to us, this turkey, of
- 1:33:57Speaker 6: course was there doing the exact same thing.
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: But chalk full right, And.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: So did the maggots smell like rottenfish?
- 1:34:05Speaker 9: No?
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: I was like, this is unbelievable. They were not. Your
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: brain wanted wanted that so badly that you had to
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: look at it multiple times. I just want to connect,
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: but you're mad or your your fancy restaurant guy is
- 1:34:21Speaker 6: not going to be like now, this particular turkey came
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: came off the big island.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: They sit down, they sit down. So what I have today,
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: that's what we have today, is this poach turkey breast.
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: Do you mind if I call you the maggot stuffed?
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: Maggot stuffed?
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: He was on a high protein diet, but the blood
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: money thing wasn't necessarily tied to hunting.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: I don't know yeah, I'm sorry. I didn't fully explain
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: that that was the argument tied to gun violence. By
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: the way, I love that.
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: I spent all this time trying to tell people about
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: how hunters are the real foodies and they're the ones,
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: and then you start and it was fantastic.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna tell you about how that's a
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: great insight you had. And I wasn't counting a lot
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: of the knowledge that people have as food knowledge. I
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: was counting it as animal knowledge.
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: But if you if.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: You interpret it as food knowledge, and you measure information
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: in bits as they do, you're right. Hunters have an
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: enormous amount of bits of food knowledge that they think
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: is about animals, meaning that cart right have big ribs,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: okay or whatever, tastes not always the best. I'd be like, well,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: that's stuff about fish. You'd be like that' stuff about food. Yeah,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: because that's a foodie.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: They when they see a dozen kinds of fish, they're
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: seeing all this food information. That one's pretty good, that
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: one you gotta fry forever, that one you gotta get
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: all fat off, that one is better this time of
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: year than that time of year. That one don't eat raw.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: You'll get sick right.
- 1:36:07Speaker 8: Even through the butchery phase, like how you need to
- 1:36:09Speaker 8: filet that fish to get the bones out, how you
- 1:36:11Speaker 8: need what's edible? What's not?
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: More advanced foodie than like anything you could learn in
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: culinary school.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: Now I'm sorting to think hunters are all snobs.
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: Species, those coastal elite.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: Bread elites, you landlocked elites.
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: Dan like's being grossed out. Tell them about those ducks
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: you shot this year, the ones that were.
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: Oh they had rice breast.
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: No, no, no, the ones that were eating that cow pasture.
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: Oh well there was one and the same Yeah, rice
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: braass is it'll kind of it'll gross you out a
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: little bit.
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: But if you don't like scatological why is this turning
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: into gross out?
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: I don't know. They were just rooting around, as a
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: lot of animals and birds do. They were rooting around
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: in a cow pasture feeding, And every dock that we
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: shot had just a little splotch of cow poop on
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: it's the top of it.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: Oh they had been coming from one of those places. Yeah, cool,
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: So tell us what else you got going. I got
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: the question for you.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: Yeah, when you're doing do you have a hunting do
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: you do you do hunting bits. Do you roll hunting
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: bits into your stand up?
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: I've done hunting bits in my stand up, yeah, and
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: it's always a weird reaction.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: Doesn't It doesn't work?
- 1:37:34Speaker 10: Well?
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: Yeah, you should do what do one in Billings?
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: You'd be fine?
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: You know what's crazy? By the way, So I can't.
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: I got to Bozeman and I, uh, you know, do
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: you guys have a comedy club here? And I was like,
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: you know what, I'm going to be the cool LA
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: comic who comes to the little comedy everybody.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: Pops in, pops in really impresses, you know.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: They go, oh wow, we got this big time LA
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: comic coming into town.
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: So I I.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: DM them and I'm like, hey, guys, I'm in Bozeman
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: wondering if I can get up while I'm here.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: Like who They go, Yeah, Tuesday nights we have our
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: open mic. Uh.
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: She was like, I'm just going to hike instead.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: If I could have gone down and wash you get up,
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: do your.
- 1:38:24Speaker 8: Business a little bit behind.
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: What the hell's the comedy club? I don't know the
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: place last, best place.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Comedy last that's involved in that outfit.
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: Yeah, but he wouldn't have been the one that got
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: that d m oh, I don't know, but I mean, look,
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: it's fine.
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: They have an open mic night.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: I don't want to perform in an open because then
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: you're just performing for other comics.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: And there had more fun going down there man watching
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: that we would have got me. I would have said,
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: I'd like an old duels and a big old thing
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: of bloody merry mix.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: Man, go down there the hell good time.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: Can you give us a summary of another chapter, fun
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: chapter that you really enjoyed?
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: Well, I think the chapter that I'm like, I'm I'm
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: kind of surprised that I haven't gotten called out on.
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: I don't know if I should even talk about it
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: on the air.
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: Go ahead, it's in the book.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: You're afraid to get into something you just published.
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: Well, I'm afraid on this podcast because I kind of like,
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: because our listeners vulnerable, vulnerable, this is my truth. I'm
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: speaking my truth.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: He whispered to me first, because you get me nervous.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: You're gonna say it.
- 1:39:41Speaker 4: Was like, I there's a there's there's an allegedly of
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: a small chance that I kind of maybe started a tiny,
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: very small forest fire.
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: Oh that's fine, okay, cool joined the clubs like doing
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: something dumb with fire. You've been.
- 1:40:03Speaker 3: Support it.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know many people with a straight
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: face that would tell you they haven't done.
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: Like some really stupid fire stuff.
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: Oh my god, I feel I was holding that. I
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: thought the cops were just waiting for me outside here.
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: I thought this was like a whole big sting operation.
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: Well, as long as it didn't turn into a fire
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: that burned one hundred thousand acres.
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: You know, have you guys heard of Paradise?
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: What is Paradise City? By Paradise City guns and rollses. Yeah, no,
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: I forgot that was a huge forest fire. I'm making
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: a bad joke.
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna say that was me. That was
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: not it.
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: No, No, I was no.
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: But I went I went el hunting in New Mexico.
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: And I got there and I I went to the
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: you guys, you guys know what a ship tent is.
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: I can tell you what a ship tent is. This
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: is a safe space. It was like a little tiny
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: tepee you where you go with a bucket in it. Yeah,
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: I don't, I don't. I'm not good at that stuff.
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: I don't like it. I was like, I'm just gonna
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: hold my hold it in for a week. I'll be fine, like.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: A Latvian plug.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: Yeah, like a Latvian plug. And it was so awfully
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: disgusting anyway.
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: Hunt holding it in that long was no. I went three,
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: So I go three days held in fine.
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: Because you don't want to go in a bucket. It
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: was not the bucket it was. It was not the bucket, guys.
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: It hadn't been changed that. It was the stalactites and
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: stalagmites of poop on the bag.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: They're not swapping bags out.
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: So you weren't allowed just to go out into the
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: woods and dig a hole.
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: I would have I would have been fine with that.
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: It seemed like that was frowned upon at our elk camp.
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: It was illegal. Okay, why it was illegal. But the
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: day that I.
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: The the night before I got my elk, we were
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: all outside, uh and uh. Some of my friends went
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: to my buddy Mow went to go make a phone
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: call at an area called the phone booth, which is
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: just like a little piece of land.
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: That has reception. You got to like hike out to it.
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: And so me and Churchie the outfitter, he was like,
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: let's go play a prank on on Mo and my son,
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: and we took the car and went to the phone booth. So,
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: you know, haha, they could have gotten a ride, but
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: instead we drove over there. I smoke a cigar up
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: there while I'm.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: On my foe back up for a second. Sure, they
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: walk to call make a phone call. And the joke
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: is that you drove there. Listen, not all hunters are funny.
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: Churchy thought it was hilarious.
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: He's an old man.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: He's like an old man. He's like, let's go do this, Joe.
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: Comedy is hard, Yeah, comedy is hard, but let's go.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: So we do that.
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: I smoke a cigar up there, and I hand to god,
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: I put this. I put a rock on top, I squeezed,
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: I made sure it was out. When it was out,
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: and uh, next morning we go out go hunting. I
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: get my elk amazing. We get back to camp, I
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: go to take a nap and I wake up to
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: Mow and he's like, dude, did you put your cigar
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: out last at the phone booth yesterday? I was like yeah, why.
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: He's like that hillside is like on fire right now.
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: I was like, what the hell are you talking about.
- 1:43:23Speaker 4: He's like, there's a hillside on fire, exactly where the
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: phone booth was. I was like, dude, I put the
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: cigar out, and then like all the other hunters come in.
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: There was like five of us, and they're like, did
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: you smoke a cigar?
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: And then I'm just like, I put it out.
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: I sort of got it, put it out, and then
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: we hear a car coming our way and you know,
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: there's no cars at all there, and we hear a
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: car coming our way and we're freaking out, and I
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: start freaking out and suddenly my inside start turning, and
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: I'd run to the ship tent to hide in the
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: shit tent because I think the cops are coming and
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: I'm going.
- 1:43:55Speaker 5: And they'd never think to look for you there.
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: He wouldn't be in there.
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: He doesn't like that tent.
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: Your insides turning have nothing to do with the plug.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: It was. It was a it was a twofer.
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: I had to go and release myself and also to
- 1:44:09Speaker 4: hide from the cops. So I released myself and I know,
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: you go in there because you don't like it there
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: right exactly, So I just stayed in there.
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: It'll still like, this is this is my punishment?
- 1:44:17Speaker 5: Where could he have gone?
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: Guys, I thought I was gonna go to jail, and
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: I was freaking out. So I was like, I'm gonna
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: you know, I'm gonna hide where I would have gotten
- 1:44:26Speaker 4: into that goddamn bucket if I needed to.
- 1:44:29Speaker 8: We'd have another oh on the podcast experience.
- 1:44:36Speaker 4: Anyway, it was another hunter. It wasn't the cops, but
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: we ended up they ended up putting the fire out.
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: And then, like an idiot who's like, you know, going
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: to the scene of the crime, I'm.
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: Like, let's go up there see let's see what this fire.
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: Let's see what it looked like, what this thing was.
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: So we go up there and there's a firefighter there
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: and I start talking to him. It's like, yeah, it's
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: not a big deal. We do controlled burns that are
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: that are bigger than this. I'm like, yeah, so where
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: what do you think happened? Like was it a He's like, oh,
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: and we know exactly what happened. And there was like
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: an X made with axes like where they thought it started.
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: And he's like, yeah, it was it was around here,
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: And like I start walking towards there and like my
- 1:45:11Speaker 4: phone reception starts coming on and it was like clearly
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: the phone booth area. It was like, I mean, well,
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: according to Crown Publishing lawyers, allegedly, we have no evidence
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: of that. But the funny part was I took that
- 1:45:26Speaker 4: chapter and I asked you for a recommendation for someone
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: to like edit my hunting chapters because because I didn't
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: want like, you know, facts in there that were off
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: about like public land hunts or whatever. And this dude,
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: who was a great guy, he called me. He's like,
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: you sure you want to publish this.
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: My buddy? Yeah? And I was like yeah, He's like
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: all right, good luck, buddy.
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: So but uh yeah, it was Uh I learned I'm
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: never going to smoke a cigar when I go hunting ever.
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: Again. What kind of cigar was it? Backwards King Eddie?
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: It was a nice cigar.
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: I wish it was not a Swisher. It was a
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: something called a Rows of Sharon. Are you familiar with
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: a cigar company?
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: You can probably just get that in New York or LA.
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: No, they're they're made in Texas, Texas cigar made by Vets.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: Well made by vets.
- 1:46:19Speaker 3: You know what?
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: It might be worse than going in the ship tent.
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: What's that is?
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: Going on the can in a jail cell?
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: I am scared. I'm still scared.
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: I'm going to go to jail, especially now that I
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: said this on there, because I'm sure you've got a
- 1:46:35Speaker 4: bunch of guys who listened to the podcast, who have
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: like ham radios, who are like, we've.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: Got a lot of we've got a lot of people
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: involved in the forest fire fighting, Yeah, a lot of
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: people involved law enforcement?
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: Yeah? Sorry, And where those two areas meet, that intersection
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: of law enforcement and forest fire fighting represented.
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: If you had just said, you know what, I couldn't
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: control and went out and just took a big old
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: dump on the surface of the w and left it
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: with my toilet paper.
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: Toilet paper blowing in the wind.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: I watched a guy with a spot and sculpe one time,
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: me and Helen cho watched the guy. Watched the guy
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: with the spot and sculpe one time going down a trail?
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: Is that? Who else with? Sorry? Was that with Brittany
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: going down a trail? He stops. I'm not kidding, man.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: He stops one hundred yards shy of his truck and
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: drops the deuce at the sick stops on the side
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: of the trail, drops the deuce, cleans himself up and
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: proceeds along his way, with the wind carrying strands of
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: toilet paper off through the sagebrush, not even so much
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: as a cat scratch back in the direction, not so
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: much as even like flicking a little dirt.
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: Wow. It sounded very poetic though, the way that I
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: wish I had had my all in camera dafter around there.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: And filmed them and put it up on social media
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: with one of those like do you know this guy?
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean even you bury your okay, you bury
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: your toilet paper, it's still like, I feel like it
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: never really biodegrades. How many time you've been to campsites
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: and there's just like toilet paper like like just like
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: sticking out of the grass ground always.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Why does that stuff not biodegrade?
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: Why do people who walk their dogs bag the dog
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: excrement in a plastic bag, tie in and not set
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: it next to the trail and leave it there as
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: though that's better.
- 1:48:36Speaker 4: Oh yeah, they say that that that I had a
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: friend of it a touch like, yeah, it's biodegradable.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't think that plastic bag is there.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: Like I'm gonna get it later, is what they say themselves.
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I've carried a lot of a lot of both
- 1:48:51Speaker 6: of these subject matters out of the out of the woods,
- 1:48:54Speaker 6: fucking horrible, horrible. But it's just it's my dislike of
- 1:48:59Speaker 6: p well in general that fuels my picking up after them.
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: It's a very paradox, will clean up.
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: Traces of them. Yeah, like they weren't there. Wait, so
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: you'll take other people's toilet paper and take it.
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: Out of the woods.
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Wow, that's commitment is a powerful motivator.
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: It is.
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: It's like when they're doing a State of the Union,
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: they should have cal stand up. You know, people come
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: down there like and this man picks up other people's excrement,
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: cal like, stand up bull.
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: The Chambers would give.
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: Him a medal if I was president, it'd be the
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: only person I named. Check would be call for that.
- 1:49:37Speaker 6: Imagine will check this out the situation where you, as
- 1:49:43Speaker 6: a hunter would be like that is a poor representation
- 1:49:46Speaker 6: of hunters, right, those situations.
- 1:49:49Speaker 5: Or outdoor folks in general.
- 1:49:51Speaker 6: Right, And it's the and then I'm always traveling around
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: with dogs at this point, and yeah, so I pack
- 1:49:59Speaker 6: out a lot of a lot of those dog shit
- 1:50:02Speaker 6: bags where I'm like, this is just.
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: What's wrong with just what's what's wrong with leaving dog
- 1:50:07Speaker 4: shit out in the woods.
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: So if it's dispersed, like actually truly dispersed, nothing, I
- 1:50:14Speaker 6: leave my shit out in the woods.
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: If it's if it's thirty piles at the trailhead, yeah,
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: that's a problem.
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: That's a problem.
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50:20Speaker 6: And there's a lot of interesting studies too, just like
- 1:50:22Speaker 6: with you're familiar with, like human waste and undigested opioids
- 1:50:28Speaker 6: and pills and stuff like that. Right, there's a lot
- 1:50:32Speaker 6: of studies that show, like dog feces in waterways have
- 1:50:39Speaker 6: serious impacts downstream as far as like sterilization of streams
- 1:50:48Speaker 6: or promotion of like big algae blooms and things like that.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: Do you do I need a smear dog shit all
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: over your little cast boot there to if I fit in,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: to find out why you don't like it.
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: I don't know why. This is where the conversation has gone.
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: I do not feel like.
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: You're arguing in favor of it started.
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: It started with a ship.
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: Ten.
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: I think wolves should be able to ship wherever the
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: hell they want, and no one should be able to
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: pick up that ship.
- 1:51:14Speaker 6: Wolves do ship wherever they want. They mark their territory
- 1:51:17Speaker 6: that way. And if you if you're into picking up
- 1:51:20Speaker 6: shd antlers, they will ship on a moose antler, like
- 1:51:25Speaker 6: a beautiful moose antler.
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: They'll ship right on.
- 1:51:27Speaker 6: Top of it, as if to say, like, I know
- 1:51:30Speaker 6: other things want this, Like you know, dogs love to
- 1:51:34Speaker 6: chew on them, Wolves love to chew on Kyos love
- 1:51:36Speaker 6: to chew on it, and they will ship right on
- 1:51:38Speaker 6: top of that moose antler.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: Author of Undercooked, available everywhere books are sold. We're gonna
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: play trivia.
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: Okay, do you feel that at the connect?
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: At what question do you feel that Phil will inform
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: you that you're out of the game.
- 1:51:56Speaker 4: Oh, I'm actually gonna do a lot better than you
- 1:51:58Speaker 4: think a question.
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: You don't think Phil will say Dan's out?
- 1:52:04Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: I think that as I a lot of weird no
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: his cross section of where he's found himself, comedy hunting,
- 1:52:15Speaker 3: what was the third one food food?
- 1:52:18Speaker 5: I think we should say conversation for trivia and let
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: Dan plug his book a little bit.
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: Before I plug my book.
- 1:52:24Speaker 4: I just want to say to all the cops and
- 1:52:26Speaker 4: firefighters listening right now, I am a huge fan of
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: law enforcement. You know how many tickets I've gotten out
- 1:52:36Speaker 4: of because of Cobra Kai. There a lot of cops
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: love Cobra Kai, and I've gotten out of about eight tickets.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: They'll be like from Cora, yeah or I they they
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: they will know, but or sometimes like during in the
- 1:52:50Speaker 4: beginning of the pandemic, like you have you.
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: On your dad, the picture of.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: Sorry, that's my that's my past for the ober Kai set,
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: Oh here's my Driver's like a bunch of wallet sized headshots,
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: just pour out of it all. Yeah.
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: No, cops love Cobra Kai and I love cops, so
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: please don't arrest me.
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: Plug the book one more time.
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: Undercooked, How I lit food become my life navigator and
- 1:53:20Speaker 4: how maybe that's a dumb way to live. You can
- 1:53:22Speaker 4: get the book wherever you can. You want your books.
- 1:53:25Speaker 4: The audiobook is great. I did the reading of it.
- 1:53:28Speaker 4: It's very fun. Do fun voices, a little more fun
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: with delivery and whatnot. But yeah, people are loving the book.
- 1:53:35Speaker 4: I hope you do. Two very funny standalone essays. I'm
- 1:53:39Speaker 4: being called I'm being called the David Sedaris of food writing.
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: WHOA bye my mother? So yeah, no, I help you
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: enjoy it.
- 1:53:51Speaker 4: I think I think I would love for the hunting
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: community to read this book.
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: I really think they'd love it, have I told my
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: funny David Sadaras story thinks.
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: So yeah, I thought we were going to maybe linger
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: on dam finally.
- 1:54:03Speaker 8: But wow, it's it's beautifully done.
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: It's raw.
- 1:54:10Speaker 8: I laughed so like, just within the first few pages.
- 1:54:13Speaker 8: I probably laughed two dozen times. You're uh. He says
- 1:54:17Speaker 8: that footnotes are his love language, which I find hilarious.
- 1:54:20Speaker 8: So it's like peppered with little hilarious footnotes. It's it's surprising,
- 1:54:26Speaker 8: it's beautifully done, and is what's revealed is your original
- 1:54:31Speaker 8: kind of very early connection to food, which is a
- 1:54:35Speaker 8: very sad and touching story. And yeah, I mean I
- 1:54:38Speaker 8: just I love I love your book.
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: Thank you, Karen the David Saris of food writing.
- 1:54:42Speaker 5: Wow, you might be you know, Steve's reading his own
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: audio books now, might be able to give him a
- 1:54:48Speaker 5: few pointers on spruce things up a bit.
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: I will say with my book, it's like a very
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: like vulnerable, raw book. And I'm like reading these like
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: passages that I would be speaking to like a therapist about,
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: but instead there's just like a sound engineer, like some
- 1:55:06Speaker 4: weirdo sound engineer on the other side of the glass.
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: Who was like, Dan, I think you're crying. Can you stop?
- 1:55:11Speaker 3: Take that again? Why are you crying?
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: We can hear it, we can hear the crying. I'm like,
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: I'm so sorry. Just give me a minute.
- 1:55:18Speaker 4: But it Yeah, No, I love doing the audiobook. It's
- 1:55:22Speaker 4: it's it's a labor of love because it's a lot
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: better when you read your own stuff. It's always weird
- 1:55:27Speaker 4: when someone else reads your stuff, I feel.
- 1:55:28Speaker 6: But I feel like Steve's repertoire for voices is literally
- 1:55:33Speaker 6: just high pitch and low pitch and normal.
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: That's three. That's three. I mean, you got that's what
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: everyone has.
- 1:55:42Speaker 7: That's what everyone's got, But he's got a killer Christopher
- 1:55:44Speaker 7: walking though.
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: Yeah, high pitch, low pitch, normal and Christopher walking right. Well, congratulations,
- 1:55:52Speaker 4: thank you, thank you, and then again thank you for
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: making this happen.
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: Well, tell people how to go find all your stuff,
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: so if they want to go see you perform, they
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: do what.
- 1:56:00Speaker 4: You can just find me on Instagram. I post everything
- 1:56:03Speaker 4: at Stand Up Dan, Twitter at Stand Up Dan.
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: Post all your shows there. Yeah, if they want to
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: watch you on TV.
- 1:56:09Speaker 4: They need to get Netflix or steal a Netflix password
- 1:56:13Speaker 4: from someone you know and watch me on Cobra Kai
- 1:56:16Speaker 4: or on Discovery Plus Rate the Fridge. I am in
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: a new movie called The Donor Party that is yeah,
- 1:56:26Speaker 4: with Malin Akerman and Rob Cordrey.
- 1:56:29Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:56:30Speaker 4: And if I'm in your town, come come see me
- 1:56:33Speaker 4: perform at the at an open mic apparently.
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: Tuesday night, Tuesday night of a mic.
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: I just followed you on Instagram.
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: Oh, thank you. Stand up Dan, Stand up Dan?
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: Undercooked? Undercooked is the book anywhere books are sold? Yeah,
- 1:56:48Speaker 4: anywhe books are sold.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: Now if everyone listened, everyone just buys on Amazon. The
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: New York Times will bone you on the list because
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: they don't they it's it's it's a long story.
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: I know, but in the category books by Dana Duke.
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: It will still kick some ass. Yeah, they will. Thanks
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: for coming on, man, thanks for having me.
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: I really appreciate it.
- 1:57:08Speaker 8: You should host a hunting show with the rest of
- 1:57:10Speaker 8: the folks who blurbed your book on the back. Phil Rosenthal,
- 1:57:13Speaker 8: Hassan Minaj, Jimmy O Yang. I think that would be
- 1:57:16Speaker 8: an all star team that would be hunters in the field.
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and stay tuned for trivia. On question eight, Phil
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: will say and Dana's audio running.
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: Wow, I'm knocking it down, dude. You're like competition, zerial confidence.
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: Oh no, no, I'm just playing.
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: I'm already playing.
- 1:57:40Speaker 9: Right, Oh seal great shine like silvering the sun.
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: Right, ride on alone, sweetheart.
- 1:58:05Speaker 10: We're done beat this damp horse to death, So taking
- 1:58:10Speaker 10: a new one and ride away. We're done beat this
- 1:58:17Speaker 10: damn horse today. M hm, So take a new one
- 1:58:22Speaker 10: and ride on.
- 1:58:24Speaker 8: H
